This report presents the biography of the composer Antonio Vivaldi, background of his composition Gloria, musical characteristics and analysis. Moreover, for a successful performance, rehearsal plans and techniques are also included. Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741), one of the representative composers in Baroque period (1600-1750), wrote Gloria, in the early 18th century. The composition date is still disputed between scholars. He composed three settings of the Gloria text: RV 588, 589 and 590. Out of them RV 589 is the most performed setting. Gloria consists of twelve movements and orchestration of trumpet, oboe, strings, and continuo. Homophonic and polyphonic style is prevalent in this work. In addition, focus should be placed on the harmonic suspensions, the flow of chromatic melodic lines and melismas. For the recital, Chamber Singers consisted of 23 people who were the members of Concert Choir who have training focusing on clean and light tone with non-vibrato style.

In 1838, Belgian instrument maker Adolphe Sax created the saxophone. The saxophone was officially patented on June 24, 1846. Sax became the first Professor of Saxophone at the Conservatoire de Paris. This conservatoire has been and continues to be a historically important school of music in Europe. There have been four saxophone professors at the Conservatoire National Supèrieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris since the instrument’s creation. These professors include: Adolphe Sax (1814-1894), Marcel Mule (1901-2001), Daniel Deffayet (1922-2002), and Claude Delangle (born 1957). Each instructor has championed the saxophone to new heights by refining pedagogical approaches and by advocating for the creation of new saxophone compositions. The music examined in this document represents pieces composed for each of the four saxophone professors who have taught at the Conservatoire de Paris. Paul-Agricole Génin’s composition Variations sur un thème espagnol: pour saxophone alto et piano was inspired by Adolphe Sax, Fernande Decruck composed Sonata in C-Sharp for Alto Saxophone and Piano (1943) for Marcel Mule, Ida Gotkovsky wrote Variations pathétiques: pour Saxophone Alto et Piano (1980) for Daniel Deffayet, and Sequenza IX for Alto Saxophone (1980) by Luciano Berio was dedicated to Claude Delangle. All of these pieces demonstrate how composers continually strive to expand the boundaries of the skilled saxophonists’ musical style, technical facility, and overall flexibility on the saxophone. This master’s report, presented as extended program notes, includes biographical information about the composers, a historical and stylistic overview of the selected compositions, and a harmonic and formal analysis of the music with respect to performance considerations.

Ingolf Dahl’s Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Wind Orchestra is considered a master concert work in saxophone literature. The work was written for saxophone pioneer Sigurd Rascher who was active in commissioning new works for the instrument. Piet Swerts’ Klonos, composed over 40 years after Dahl’s Concerto, is a much newer composition. The work has gained national recognition as a popular competition piece and is a synthesis of new and old compositional styles. These two works strongly showcase the flexibility and virtuosity capable of the skilled saxophonist. This master’s report, presented as extended program notes, includes biographical information about the composers, a historical and stylistic overview of the selected compositions, and a harmonic and formal analysis of the music with respect to performance considerations.

This report provides detailed analyses of several orchestral works. Current orchestras have striven to rejuvenate their programs by balancing canonical literature with newer or less familiar works; such a practice has become especially important in an age when audiences are dwindling and orchestras are disbanding. The works included in this report follow that balanced blueprint, including staples such as Haydn’s Symphony No. 103 in E-flat Major (the “Drumroll”) and Berlioz’s “Hungarian March” from The Damnation of Faust to new orchestrations of 20th century works, such as Bryce Craig’s arrangement of the toccata from Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin, as well as works composed within the last six years, such as Casey Cangelosi’s Concerto for Marimba and Orchestra No. 2. Each work’s formal design is straightforward, and the technical skills required are not virtuosic. The chapters below explore each work from a historical, theoretical, and performance perspective.

Various challenges face rural areas when providing programs similar to those offered by their suburban counterparts. It is difficult for rural areas to provide experiences that larger urban and metropolitan areas can offer. Cooperation is vital to developing arts programming in rural areas. Development and Perceptions of Rural Arts Experiences: A Case Study of the Marshall County Arts Cooperative (MCAC) represents a unique setting where students, teachers and community members were given opportunities to collaborate for the common good of all participants. On September 2nd, 2005 a two-year plan was approved to make a Community Arts Program a reality and operational in all parts of Marshall County, Kansas. Under the guidance of Kansas State University Music Education Department, the researcher developed and studied the Marshall County Arts Cooperative (MCAC). Perceptions of Marshall County students, parents, educators and community members were analyzed. MCAC programs worked in continued cooperation with area public and private schools and eleven arts organizations within Marshall County. The plan provides for the documentation of the project with a completed doctoral dissertation entitled: Development and Perceptions of Rural Arts Experiences: A Case Study of MCAC. The research design is framed into four main categories: (1) MCAC Development, (2) Rural Locale Codes, (3) Arts Experiences and (4) Perceptions of MCAC. A diverse collection of samples include, direct and indirect observation, interviews, documents, artist rosters and audio/video artifacts. Following a thorough analysis, emerging themes provide insight into the development and implementation of the MCAC. Results indicate that cooperation from a variety of people including staff, artists, students, educators and community members played a significant role in the success of MCAC and experiences created diversity in remote and isolated areas.

The Te Deum chant began in the Roman Catholic Church in prayer, and like many other psalms used in the Mass, it has evolved into a concert piece with settings composed for coronations, military victories, and other festive occasions. This author has identified two significant settings of this text by Joseph Franz Haydn and Antonín Leopold Dvořák for this discussion to study how common factors (primarily a common text) influence their compositions. Chapter I provides the purpose of the study, a brief description of related research, description of the appendices, and analytical criteria for examining the Te Deum settings. Chapter II presents a study of the ancient Te Deum psalm and its text. Topics for discussion include a brief overview of the history of chant. In regards to the Te Deum, further studies are included on its history, uses within prayer, the text, melody, and other uses of the Te Deum. Chapter III contains an in-depth analysis of the Haydn Te Deum (HXXIIIc:2) and the Dvořák Te Deum (Op. 103, B176, [Op. 93, Op. 98]). Analytical criteria for examining these settings consist of: a brief biographical sketch along with each composers compositional characteristics and reasons for commissioning this piece; discussions on general characteristics, structural and formal design, themes, melodic/harmonic characteristics, rhythmic/metrical/tempo characteristics, articulations, dynamics, texture, performance, pedagogical, and conducting considerations. Chapter IV summarizes general trends in the usage of the text of Te Deum. Information for this final chapter is derived from the in-depth analysis, the ancient history of the Te Deum, and other settings of the Te Deum text examined in sources similar to this document. The findings contain summaries of the musical elements listed above as well as general and specific commonalities of textual influence between the selected Te Deum settings. Appendix A provides the complete text of the Te Deum psalm with English translations and melody. Appendix B provides a score analysis of Te Deum (HXXIIIc:2). Appendix C provides a score analysis of Te Deum (Op. 103, B176, [Op. 93, Op. 98]).

Resumen
Forest is one of the natural resources that are facing a serious threat in the world today. Overexploitation of forest resources for timber, fuelwood and agricultural land is increasing faster, to the extent that the future prospects for most forest in the world are open to question. While there are various reasons responsible for the decline in vegetation, this study explores the situation of the Northern Nigerian region arid zone forest by studying the changing pattern of vegetation in relation to the cooking fuel situation in the region using both national and regional statistics and a local area case study. The study uses multiple methodologies (Remote Sensing, Geographical Information Systems and a local survey using household survey, focus group discussion and participant observation) to examine various aspects of the overall problem at different geographical scales. The combined methods serve as a triangulation strategy to identify causal linkages between changes in forest cover, fuelwood consumption and cooking fuel supply problems in the region. Past studies have used some of the methodologies, singly or in combination. However, no previous study has utilised the full range of methodologies listed above to examine the fuelwood problem across all scales from the national to local level, which is a contribution to knowledge that this present study offers. The study commences by using a time series analysis of Landsat satellite images of the North-Eastern part of Nigeria (NEN), covering a period of about three decades, using the technique of Remote Sensing (RGB-NDVI model), with a view to identifying areas where deforestation is evident in the vegetated areas of the region. The results indicate that the vegetation of the area has drastically reduced since 1970s. However, both the pattern and causes of the observed change were non-linear. Similarly, evidence from ground truthing investigation has shown that fuelwood collection is among the major factors of deforestation in the region, mainly due to lack of alternative energy sources in the region. This initiated a wider national exploration of fossil fuel supply and consumption in the country, with a view to examining whether there are any spatial patterns of such inequalities amongst households across the 36 states of Nigeria (and Abuja the capital city). Spatial analysis of the distribution and consumption of cooking fuel is conducted using Geographical Information Systems (GIS). The results show that fossil fuel supply is precarious in the country. The majority of the northern states are deprived of sufficient fossil fuel supply, and this is closely correlated with their dependence on traditional fuels (fuelwood), leading to considerable pressure on the region’s scarce vegetation resources. Further investigation of the national findings relating to fossil fuel supply is undertaken using a local survey, which explores the pattern of household fuel consumption and commercial fuelwood activities in some selected areas of North-Eastern Nigeria. The results also reveal that there are some local inequalities in the choice of cooking fuel among households (in favour of fuelwood), which is related to the unreliability in the supply of fossil fuel in the region (cooking fuel poverty). This has paved the way for the expansion of organised commercial fuelwood vending in the region to supply households with fuelwood.

The Nationalökonomische Gesellschaft (NOeG) was founded in June 1918 by a group of young scholars, mostly based in Vienna, as a forum for theoretical debate. Despite the prominent economists involved (e.g. Schumpeter, Mises, Mayer, Spann, Amonn) its activities soon petered out. The relaunch of the NOeG in 1927 originated from the necessity of the two strands of the Austrian school, led by Mayer and Mises, to find some tolerable arrangement; Spann and economists outside the University of Vienna were excluded. Around 1930 the NOeG and Vienna in general proved an attraction for many well-known economists from abroad, and many of the papers presented were printed and cited in first-rate journals. Yet with the emigration of many Austrian economists during the 1930s the NOeG mirrored the general decline of academic economics in Austria and the number and quality of the papers presented decreased. After the Anschluss 1938 the NOeG and its president Mayer were quick in dismissing its Jewish members and in the following adhered to a strategy of inconspicuous adaptation; its formal existence did not lead to any substantial activities. The post-war period was characterized by the restoration of the situation before 1938, with Mayer's continued presence at the university as well as at the NOeG a case in point. In the end, it led Austrian academic economics into a state of international isolation and "provincialization" much lamented by the émigré economists of the Austrian school.

The subject of our thesis is the dramatic and epic values presented at the Šãh-Nãme (the King's Book) by Ferdösĩ. This Persain literature masterpiece is foll of qualities such as heroism, braveness, honour, respect and honesty. .

In the network-based DNC systems and especially heterogeneous DNC systems data get more distributed due to the ability to store not only in the DNC Server but also in the CNC controller or CNC Terminal. This leads a challenge to the DNC software in the implementation of its basic functions. The agent-based DNC software with assistants (ADNC) is suggested to solve the above problem. Its tasks are to collect distributed NC information and transfer data safely as well as performing other extended functions, i.e. NC program generation, machine data collection, production data collection, control machines in system, etc. The present work presented the concept to develop the ADNC and its first prototype. This prototype was developed in a process using a framework of agent-based assistants, called AgentAP. It is applicable on distributed manufacturing data and had been implemented on the agent platform JADE. The module Program Assistant, one of these prototype modules, which is responsible for management, bidirectional transfer, and monitoring change of NC programs, is also discussed

A substantial number of preliminary tests were conducted in order to obtain a suitable specimen size which was then used in the temperature measurement process. Quasistatic, intermediate and high strain-rate tests were performed; the last utilised the radiometer for temperature measurement. An Eyring plot was constructed from which fundamental values for activation volumes and enthalpies were obtained. Full descriptions of the testing techniques used have been included and a brief photoelastic analysis has been carried out on a partially deformed specimen which shows molecular alignment.

Resumen
Understanding the impacts of land-use change on biodiversity and the ecosystem services that it provides is of great importance given unprecedented growth of the human population. Past studies attempting to explore these impacts have described the overall structure of communities (i.e. species richness and trait diversity) across gradients of local scale degradation and fragmentation, and have sought to identify whether the loss of species following land-use change is non-random. Yet, despite a wealth of research we still lack a generalised understanding of how land-use change impacts on traits responsible for determining species sensitivity and their role within ecosystems, particularly for vertebrates. Moreover, despite the importance of niche-based processes in the assembly of communities, we have not yet elucidated whether these are important in mediating the collapse of communities in human-dominated landscapes. To fill these existing research gaps, I collated comprehensive avian species inventories from fragmented and degraded forests and compared their structure with communities existing in continuous forests. In Chapter 2, I tested whether sensitivity of species to forest fragmentation varies between the temperate zone and the tropics and whether there are key differences in the size of fragments required to maintain ecosystem processes in these regions. I found that sensitivity to fragmentation varies according to functional group and body mass, with the prevalence of insectivores and large frugivores declining in relation to fragment size, particularly in tropical fragments smaller than 100 ha. In Chapter 3, I tested whether functional diversity and the mean position of trait diversity of insectivores and frugivores, changed across a gradient of intensifying land-use change. I found a decline in the functional diversity of forest species and a shift in the mean community traits for both forest and non-forest species. In Chapter 4, I tested whether the structure of tropical bird communities are influenced by species interactions in a fragmented landscape. I found increasing over-dispersion in functional and phylogenetic trait relatedness among species with decreasing fragment size, suggesting that competitive interactions are important in the disassembly of avian communities. In Chapter 5, I modelled the impact of forest cover change on ecosystem function across the Brazilian Amazon, focusing on seed dispersal by birds. Furthermore, I tested whether ecosystem function declined linearly with decreased forest cover after accounting for differences in the underlying pools of species. I found the lowest levels of functional diversity along the southern arc of deforestation and that the dispersal of large seeds showed some resilience to declining forest cover. Taken together, my results suggest that the loss of species from communities in degraded and fragmented landscapes is strongly non-random. Insectivores and large frugivores are most sensitive to land-use change, with species located in the densest parts of trait space being most threatened by a decline in forest patch size, suggesting that species interactions regulate the collapse of avian diversity in human-modified forests. I conclude that land-use change has important implications for the provisioning of ecosystem services, including seed dispersal and the control of insect herbivores. The impact of future land-use change is likely to be mediated by the composition of the original pool of species and the amount of redundancy in the ecosystem services that they provide. I discuss the relevance of my findings to land-use management strategies and policy interventions, and in particular conclude that these should, where possible, maintain pristine forest patches above 1000 ha, improve connectivity among habitat patches, and ensure greater protection for logged and burnt forests. Future studies should focus on clarifying the link between shifts in vertebrate community structure and the functioning of forest ecosystems.

Infant vocalisations are uniquely salient sounds in the environment. They universally attract attention and compel the listener to respond with speed and care. They provide a wealth of information to parents about their infant’s needs and affective state. There is a scientific consensus that early parenting has a profound impact on child development. In particular, the sensitivity with which parents respond to their infant’s communicative cues has been shown to affect cognitive and socio-emotional outcomes. The mechanisms underlying such sensitivity are not well understood. In this thesis, adults’ sensitivity to infant cues will be considered in terms of two components, the ‘promptness’ and ‘appropriateness’ of responses, as originally conceptualised by Bell and Ainsworth (1972). Promptness of responses is considered in terms of adults’ ability to move with speed and effort after listening to infant vocalisations. Appropriateness, on the other hand, is considered in terms of adults’ ability to differentiate between functionally significant parameters in infant vocalisations. The effect of modifiable environmental factors on the promptness and appropriateness of responses is also investigated. Finally, a focused investigation of the brain basis of responses to infant vocalisations is presented. Overall, findings demonstrated that infant vocalisations undergo privileged, specialised processing in the adult brain. After hearing an infant cry, adults with and without depression were found to move with greater coordination and effort. Adults were also found to be attuned to subtle parameters in infant cries. This sensitivity was shown to be affected by two participant-level factors, depression and previous musical training. Furthermore, this sensitivity could be enhanced through intervention, as evidenced by findings from short-term, perceptual discrimination training. The notion of privileged processing of infant vocalisations is further supported by evidence of early discrimination of infant sounds in a survival-related subcortical brain structure. Future directions for this work include directly relating current experimental measures of adults’ responses to infant cues with parental sensitivity to infant communication during dynamic interactions. Translating current findings into applied settings would require an investigation of the effects of factors such as musical and perceptual training on sensitivity to infant cues in at-risk populations, such as mothers and fathers with depression. Lastly, an increased understanding of the brain basis of adults’ sensitivity to infant cues will provide insight into our greatest challenge: parenting our young.

Resumen
Since John Ruskin and William Morris's protestations against mass production in the nineteenth century, critics of mass consumption thought that it not only reduced the necessity, but also the desire, to make things for personal use and enjoyment. The history of leisure painting in art societies and adult education, and of the amateur artist’s consumption of art materials and self-help literature, shows that, on the contrary, affluence both inspired and facilitated a quest for self-actualisation amongst the rank and file. Creative activities such as drawing and painting served this quest at little financial cost to the individual. Following the Second World War, a significant increase in the take-up of leisure painting was encouraged by the state as part of the broader postwar settlement. The pursuit of personal wellbeing through creative activity was regarded as a public good, of benefit not only to individuals but also to the communities of which they were a part. In the last quarter of the twentieth century, state support for recreational pursuits such as leisure painting was pared back: in the shift from collectivist social democracy towards individualist market liberalism, personal enjoyment was recast as a private affair for which the consumer must pay. Painting continued to grow in popularity, supported by expanding consumer markets in self-help literature and affordable art materials. Yet while consumerism sustained the popularity of amateur art-making, the ways in which amateur artists participated in the arts changed. Personal creativity emerges here as an inherently social activity: the private experience of creativity is mediated and structured by society. Consumerism was not bad for personal creativity per se, but the replacement of a communitarian approach with a consumerist model restricted the breadth and reach of creative aspiration nurtured as part of the postwar settlement. By the end of the century, most amateurs were painting alone.

Resumen
Background: Existing research findings provide evidence for the general effectiveness of paraprofessional counsellors. However, research into the effectiveness of paraprofessional counsellors with specific client opulations is lacking, and we currently know little about the processes of development in this group of practitioners. To address these issues, two empirical studies were carried out. Aim of Study 1: To evaluate the effectiveness of a group of 12 minimally trained/experienced volunteer mental health counsellors. Method: Data were collected over a one year period on 118 clients referred to a voluntary sector counselling agency. The CORE-OM was used to measure clients' levels of distress on a sessionby-session basis. Clients and counsellors also completed a range of additional selfreport measures before and after counselling. A benchmarking strategy was used to evaluate the outcomes achieved by participants in this study against three benchmark studies selected from published literature. Results: Paraprofessionals in this study achieved an effect size of .70 compared to effect sizes of 1.36, 1.39 and 1.42 in the selected benchmark studies. Conclusions: Minimally trained/experienced paraprofessional counsellors working in mental health settings may benefit from more targeted training before engaging in practice. Findings should be interpreted cautiously as the selected benchmarks may not reflect the organisational factors operating within all voluntary sector counselling agencies. Aims of Study 2: To explore the meaning and experience of becoming a paraprofessional counsellor. Participants: The sample included two men and six women. Method: Each participant was interviewed for approximately one hour at the end of their first year of practice. Data analysis: Data were analysed using a grounded theory approach. Results: Four main categories and a core category were identified. The core category of ‘finding a voice’ represented participant attempts to achieve and sustain an identity as a counsellor. This process involved four related experiences: 1) resonating with counselling and the role of counsellor, the agency ethos and values and the theoretical model employed within the agency; 2) learning the language of counselling; 3) putting the language of counselling into action; and 4) experiencing and resolving dissonant experiences. Conclusions: Findings contribute new understanding to existing models of counsellor development regarding the developmental processes that occur in counsellors prior to the period of professional training. Data from Study 1 and Study 2 were also examined to determine if individual differences existed among participants in terms of their effectiveness, personal philosophies, and counselling practice. Findings showed that counsellors varied in their effectiveness with effect sizes ranging from .96 for the more effective counsellor to .21 for the least effective counsellor. Differences in levels of effectiveness were most apparent at the extremes of the three more effective and the three less effective counsellors. Preliminary findings suggested that the more effective counsellors could be distinguished from the less effective counsellors by the emphasis they placed on the relational aspects of counselling, flexibility, working collaboratively with clients, and by the degree of ‘fit’ that existed between their personal philosophy and the model of counselling preferred with the MHSS agency. Implications of these findings are discussed in section 7.4 of Chapter 7.

Resumen
Quantum theory describes our universe incredibly successfully. To our classically-inclined brains, however, it is a bizarre description that requires a reimagining of what fundamental reality, or 'ontology', could look like. This thesis examines different ontological features in light of the success of quantum theory, what it requires, and what it rules out. While these investigations are primarily foundational, they also have relevance to quantum information, quantum communication, and experiments on quantum systems. The way that quantum theory describes the state of a system is one of its most unintuitive features. It is natural, therefore, to ask whether a similarly strange description of states is required on an ontological level. This thesis proves that almost all quantum superposition states for d > 3 dimensions must be real - that is, present in the ontology in a well-defined sense. This is a strong requirement which prevents intuitive explanations of the many quantum phenomena which are based on superpositions. A new theorem is also presented showing that quantum theory is incompatible with macro-realist ontologies, where certain physical quantities must always have definite values. This improves on the Leggett-Garg argument, which also aims to prove incompatibility with macro-realism but contains loopholes. Variations on both of these results that are error-tolerant (and therefore amenable to experimentation) are presented, as well as numerous related theorems showing that the ontology of quantum states must be somewhat similar to the quantum states themselves in various specific ways. Extending these same methods to quantum communication, a simple proof is found showing that an exponential number of classical bits are required to communicate a linear number of qubits. That is, classical systems are exponentially bad at storing quantum data. Causal influences are another part of ontology where quantum theory demands a revision of our classical notions. This follows from the outcomes of Bell experiments, as rigorously shown in recent analyses. Here, the task of constructing a native quantum framework for reasoning about causal influences is tackled. This is done by first analysing the simple example of a common cause, from which a quantum version of Reichenbach's principle is identified. This quantum principle relies on an identification of quantum conditional independence which can be defined in four ways, each naturally generalising a corresponding definition for classical conditional independence. Not only does this allow one to reason about common causes in a quantum experiments, but it can also be generalised to a full framework of quantum causal models (mirroring how classical causal models generalise Reichenbach's principle). This new definition of quantum causal models is illustrated by examples and strengthened by it's foundation on a robust quantum Reichenbach's principle. An unusual, but surprisingly fruitful, setting for considering quantum ontology is found by considering time travel to the past. This provides a testbed for different ontological concepts in quantum theory and new ways to compare classical and quantum frameworks. It is especially useful for comparing computational properties. In particular, time travel introduces non-linearity to quantum theory, which brings (sometimes implicit) ontological assumptions to the fore while introducing strange new abilities. Here, a model for quantum time travel is presented which arguably has fewer objectionable features than previous attempts, while remaining similarly well-motivated. This model is discussed and compared with previous quantum models, as well as with the classical case. Together, these threads of investigation develop a better understanding of how quantum theory affects possible ontologies and how ontological prejudices influence quantum theory.

The Incarnation illuminates the double mystery of God and man. From the creation of man up to his divinisation Syméon recapitules in his doctrine the stages of the history of the alliance. Man created in the image of the Word perfect Image of the Father, is present for all eternity in the plan of love of the Holy Trinity. Attaining a perfect ressemblance is left to the will of man. Once again the clairvoyant that he originally was, man contemplating the beauty of the Son, becomes his semblable. That which is experienced inaugurates that which will be in the Kingdom, for nothing will remain in the eschatology which has not been initiated here on earth. To live conscioulsly with Christ is an experience of light. Illuminated by the light which is Spirit, man can contemplate He who, light come to this world, leads to the full revelation of the Glory of God. The "christocentrique" anthropology of Syméon has no other foundation than his faith in Christ God Friend of Man who became his Saviour and his King

Extreme physical exertion is commonly associated with acute physiological changes in immune variables known to disturb host defences. Likely induced by the production of stress hormones (e.g., cortisol), partaking in ultra-endurance events with accompanying physiological stressors (e.g., environmental extremes, sleep deprivation and compromised hydration and (or) nutritional status) may amplify stress hormone responses and compromise immune status to a greater extent. To date, research investigating the impact of extreme physical exertion (e.g., ultra-marathon events) on physiological variables is extremely limited. More recently, the potential use of probiotics with known immunomodulatory effects may be considered an appropriate nutritional strategy to improve host defences and minimise and (or) prevent sub-clinical or clinically significant outcomes in active populations.

Resumen
This thesis describes three connected stages of development and analysis of residential heat pump energy use: firstly, the analysis of heat pump performance data from a monitoring study of ground source heat pumps; secondly, the definition and development of a generalised residential heat pump energy model embedded within an enhanced dwelling energy model; finally, the analysis of the effects of possible residential heat pump installation scenarios on the UK energy supply and carbon emissions. The monitoring study involved three ground source heat pump installations. The data collected consisted of heat output, electric power input, system temperatures and system status indicators. Analysis indicated that these systems showed reductions in carbon emissions from homes ranging from 18% to 37% compared with their counterfactual fuel-burning systems. The monitoring study provided empirical values to parameterise the heat pump model which was built around a linear regression relationship of heat pump COP to source / sink temperature differential based on heat pump performance data from standard laboratory test results. This model was added in a new module to enhance the BRE domestic energy model, BREDEM-8, which provides monthly estimates. Estimating rules were included for energy use from bivalent alternate, bivalent parallel operation and space cooling. The enhanced BREDEM-8 model was used to analyse the effects of possible residential heat pump installations within a housing stock energy model developed using the English Housing Survey datasets as a data source. Baseline estimates for the current stock were created using data reduction techniques to provide parameters (u-values, glazing details) for the enhanced BREDEM-8 model. Scenarios for heat pump deployments were created for the periods up to 2020 and 2050, selecting dwellings for heat pump application according to scenarios reflecting the perceived needs of the period, ie. the likely reduction in UK generating capacity up to 2020 and CO2 emissions reduction targets to 2050. Results showed that up to 2020, a policy of targeting dwellings with the highest overall emissions for replacement would reduce carbon emissions by 7.6%, at the expense of a 12% increase in electricity consumption. Targeting dwellings with the highest emitting existing systems caused a smaller increase in electricity consumption of about 6.5% with carbon emissions reduced by about 6.8%. The scenarios for the period to 2050, including 80% replacement of gas systems with heat pumps, gave an estimated 80% reduction in carbon emissions, when accompanied by an similar reduction in the carbon intensity of electricity generation and bringing about an increase in electricity consumption of somewhat over 40%. The effect of the more extreme scenario is to replace all but a small proportion of the energy used for heating and hot water with standard rate electricity, in 84.6% of the dwellings, and retaining gas in the remainder, 15.2%, bringing about a radical shift to electric heating throughout the housing stock.

Our work consists in studying Loin de Médine, a historical novel by Assia Djebar, in its relationship with History. The author is based on, and at the same time criticizes the works of Ibn Saad, Ibn Hicham and Tabari and, by selecting excerpts and resorting to fiction, aims at demonstrating that their vision of facts can be questioned. It is thus opposed to History made by men and for men. Shaking certitudes is a first step towards expressing her own version, which does not rest on the opposition between right and wrong, but between fiction and plausibility. Consequently the events related in the novel become significant in the organization of the text. History is recreated and gains meaning. The author, who situates her novel in the early period of Islam, re-reads and re-writes this period by replacing women at the heart of her story. Turning History into fiction enables her to show the women who have been close to the Prophet as heroines who paved the way for Muslim women today. Loin de Médine is thus rooted into the current events of the 80's and 90's, and also appears both as a warning to Algerians and an answer to the rise of radical Islam. In her writings AD takes a stand, since she does not shrink from dealing with topical subjects such as wearing the veil, male supremacy or women's speech

Electrochemical measurements were performed in a three-electrode cell arranged with a magnetic stirrer. Carbon paste electrode served as a working electrode. Platinum wire and Ag/ AgCl, 3 NaCl were, respectively, counter and reference electrodes. All measurements were performed with BAS-Epsilon Bioanalytical system. This work presents investigation of carbon paste electrodes modified with commercially available yeasts as amperometric biosensors for lactic acid using a mediator phenazine methosulphate (PMS). Sensitivity to lactic acid was tested using various configurations of the electrodes (yeast layer on the top of the electrode, yeast in the bulk carbon paste, PMS in solution or in the bulk carbon paste). The optimal operational conditions of the electrodes were: an operating potential 0.0 V, solution pH 7.2, concentration of phenazine methosulphate in solution 0.2 mmol/l, and yeast layer on the top of the electrode. The suitability of yeast-modified electrodes for determination of L-lactic acid in milk and dairy products such as kefir and yoghurt was also tested. The advantages of the electrodes were the simple preparation from the cheap source of the enzyme flavocytochrome b2. The disadvantages of the electrodes were long time to achieve reproducible results, high noise level, thus, high detection limit and sensitivity to other metabolites.

Activated carbons widely used as adsorbents in air treatments are prone to oxidation and self heating due to external heating, exothermic chemical reactions, and adsorption reactions. The aim of this work is to establish a quantitative relationship between the intrinsic properties of activated carbons and their reactivity leading to oxidation and ignition. The correlation is established by analysing a large number of activated carbons samples having diversified origin and characteristics. Carbon samples were characterized for their physical and chemical properties. Their oxidation and ignition reactivity in air were studied using Thermogravimetry (TG) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). The Point of Initial Oxidation (PIO) representing the beginning of the oxidation reactions and the Spontaneous Ignition Temperature (SIT) where the bed combustion takes place in a self sustaining manner [were experimentally determined. In addition, activation energy (Ea) was calculated from the TG curves indicating the weight loss of the combustion reactions. In a first approach, oxidation and ignition behaviours described by the PIO, SIT, and Ea values versus intrinsic properties of the activated carbon were examined. Global qualitative trends were underlined. In a second step, a more rigorous analysis was realised and quantitative statistical correlations between oxidation and ignition properties and intrinsic characteristics of the porous carbonaceous materials were investigated using multiple linear regression (MLR). Results indicated that the properties of the activated carbons had a significant influence. The surface oxygenated groups and the metal impregnates increased the reactivity of the material whereas the nitrogen content stabilized the reactivity of the samples. The porosity characteristics like the specific surface area, pore volume also contributed to the increase in the reactivity of the material
