Abstract:
Evaluation of four distinct obturating methods namely endodontic pressure syringe (n=40), reamers (n=40), Lentulo spirals driven through slow-speed handpiece (n=40) and incremental filling technique (n=4) using zinc oxide eugenol (ZOE) paste as obturating material in deciduous teeth is of interest to dentist. Hence, we are interested determining the effective obturation methodology using CBCT. Handpiece driven lentuspirals helped in optimum obturation in high percentage of root canals. Low percentage of optimally filled root canals was observed in reamers technique. Moreover, under filled root canals was low in lentuspirals technique of obturation. Thus, overfilled root canals were high in endodontic pressure syringe and reamers obturation technique.

In one of the fragments of the lover’s discourse translated by Timothy Matthews in this volume Barthes considers the figure of Gradiva, from Jensen’s tale, engaging thereby with Freud’s essay on ‘Delusions and Dreams in Jensen’s Gradiva’. Gradiva is a figure of a happy outcome, whereby Zoe Bertgang ‘gently’ eases Norbert Hanold out of the psychotic delusion of his amorous fascination. But these dynamics are not as straightforward as they seem; if, as Barthes suggests, the madness of love is all-encompassing, total, what are we to make of Zoe’s devotion, since she splits herself, between Gradiva and Zoe. This paradoxical tension, between loving and being in love, generates further aporia and tension in the translations enacted across the texts of Barthes, Jensen and Freud. These ‘research notes’ on Gradiva enumerate multiple indices of the ‘Gradiva dossier’, opened by Barthes.

Abstract:
A pragmatic approach to the treatment of infectious diseases with multicausal agents and prevention of the development of resistant isolates is the combination of herbal remedies with the first-line antimicrobial agents to which most of them have become resistant. This study evaluated the interactions between the ethanolic bark extract ofZiziphus mucronatawith known antimicrobial agentsin vitro. In this study, the results showed that varied zones of inhibitions (ZME—chloramphenicol (17–42 mm), ZME—amoxicillin (17–35 mm), ZME—tetracycline (17–36 mm), ZME—ciprofloxacin (20–41 mm), ZME—nalidixic acid (17–34 mm), and ZME—kanamycin (17–38 mm)) were produced by the antibacterial combinations. At the highest combined concentrations, 12 isolates (ZME—ciprofloxacin) > 10 isolates (ZME—chloramphenicol) = (ZME—kanamycin) > 6 isolates (ZME—amoxicillin) = (ZME—nalidixic acid) and 5 isolates (ZME—tetracycline) were inhibited with zones of inhibition greater than20±1.0 mm. Although the agar diffusion assay suggested that the interactions between the ethanolic extract ofZ. mucronataand the antibiotics were both synergistic and additive in nature, the fractional inhibitory concentration indices (FICI) showed that the interactions were synergistic (54.17%), additive (27.78%), indifferent (16.67%), and antagonistic (1.39%). While the fractional inhibitory concentration indices (FICIs) for synergism ranged between 0.00391 and 0.5, that of additivity ranged between 0.516 and 1.0, indifferences ranged between 1.062 and 3.0 and antagonistic interaction was 5.0. The synergistic effects implied that the antibacterial combinations would be more effective and useful in the treatment of multicausal and multidrug-resistant bacteria than a single monotherapy of either antibacterial agent.

Abstract:
Abstract Objectives Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) enables the dynamic measurement of glycemic control. In diabetic cohorts, time in range (TIR), measured by CGM, is discriminatory of future disease development. However, the value of CGM metrics in non-diabetic populations and their relationship with health outcomes is unclear. This research developed ‘optimised’ TIR targets specific to healthy populations and explored their relationship with diet and health. Methods The ZOE PREDICT studies, one (n = 1002, UK), two (n = 987, US) and three (n = 4,500, US) collected demographic information, habitual and free-living diet data, cardiometabolic blood biomarkers and postprandial responses to standardized meals in clinic and free-living settings. TIR was calculated from CGMs (2–4 days free-living) using 1) the American Diabetes Association (ADA); 70–140 mg/dL (TIRADA) and 2) a novel optimised; 70–100 mg/dL (TIRoptimised) target. Habitual diet quality (plant-based diet indices; PDI, healthy-PDI and unhealthy-PDI), and free-living nutrient intakes (% energy) were calculated. Associations (spearman's, adjusted for age, sex and BMI) between TIR and diet were examined, and differences in diet and health outcomes between quintile 1 (Q1) and 5 (Q5) of TIR targets were assessed. Results Mean fasting glucose was 91 ± 10 mg/dL, HbA1c 5.3 ± 0.4%, TIRoptimised 70 ± 17% and TIRADA 91 ± 13% (n = 4805 after exclusions, 78% females, mean age 46 ± 12y). Individuals with better glycemic control (TIRoptimised Q5 vs Q1) were younger (mean ± SD) (45 ± 11 vs 49 ± 12y), had lower HbA1c (5.2 ± 0.4 vs 5.5 ± 0.5) and fasting glucose (91 ± 14 vs 97 ± 23 mg/dL) and higher HDL-cholesterol (1.7 ± 0.4 vs 1.6 ± 0.5mmol/L) (P< 0.001 for all). TIRoptimised (PREDICT 1 n = 868) was associated with a favourable diet (lower unhealthy-PDI and carbohydrate intakes and higher protein intakes) and cardiometabolic risk profile (lower HbA1c and ASCVD) (P < 0.05 for all). However, TIRADA was not associated with diet or health outcomes. Conclusions We demonstrate that an optimised TIR target (70–100 mg/dL) is discriminatory of ASCVD risk despite normal fasting HbA1c. These findings demonstrate the utility of CGM's in non-diabetic populations and highlight the potential application of dietary strategies to improve TIR and subsequent metabolic complications. Abstract:
Capture fishery is one of the dependable sources of fish protein and livelihood. This study investigated Ichthyofaunal diversity in Zobe reservoir for a period of twelve months (March 2020 to February 2021). Individual fishermen catch was used throughout the study period, where each of the five (5) Landing sites was visited twice monthly for catch assessment survey. Fish samples were randomly collected from 5 canoes/fishermen per sampling unit and catches examined. Thirteen (13) fish species (Clarias gariepinus, Oreochromis niloticus, Schilbe mystus, Synodontis membranaceous, niloticus, Bagrus docmac, Bagrus bayad, Alestes dentex, Tilapia Mozambique, Clarias anguilaris, Momyrus rume, Sarotherodon galileus, Alestes nurse and Tilapia zilli) belonging to eight genera from 7 families were observed. Oreochromis niloticus of the family Cichlidae was the most dominant species constituting 34.7%, 35.6%, 24.8%, 26.99%, and 27.3%, for Raddawa, Tabobi, Gada, Garhi, and Makera respectively, of the total catch in each fishing station of the reservoir. Diversity indices estimated from all the five stations include Shannon’s index of diversity index (H’); with a monthly range of 1.81 to 2.34, Simpson’s dominance index (C); 0.10 to 0.78, Simpson’s index (1-D); 0.10 to 0.78, Species evenness index (E); ranging from 0.596 to 1.00, species richness of Margalef’s index (d); 1.40 to 1.53, and reciprocal of Simpson’s index (D’); 1.29 to 9.96. Fish species are highly diverse with good species richness and evenness. This study validated the fisheries resources for commercial activity and fishery management of the reservoir. Therefore, stakeholders should utilize optimally and commercially the fishery resources for job creations.

Abstract:
The thick–clawed crayfish Pontastacus pachypus (Rathke, 1837) is an endangered, and the least known, crayfish species in Europe. Currently, detailed information regarding the morphology, ecology and reproduction of thick–clawed crayfish is outdated. This study presents, for the first time, detailed photographs of the thick-clawed crayfish, and updated information on distinctive morphological characters and morphometric analysis. New specifications of the carapace and appendage morphological characteristics were established as: 1) the rostrum is long, sharply pointed and has three pairs of distinctive sub-apical lateral spines, 2) two well–developed pairs of post–orbital ridge on the carapace are ended by prominent spine; 3) each finger of chelae ends with a black sharp tip. Among the 18 morphometric indices, carapace width to the total length (CPW/TL), abdomen width to the total length (ABW/TL) and claw height to the claw width (CLH/CLW) clearly differentiate P. pachypus from the other representatives of Astacus genus (A. colchicus and A. astacus) and P. leptodactylus (P<0.05). Comparison of individual indices between P. pachypus and P. leptodactylus revealed that almost all indices differed significantly except head length to the total length (HEL/TL) and rostrum length to the total length (ROL/TL). This study contributes to the identification of the thick–clawed crayfish for the purpose of conservation and protection of its localities.

Abstract:
The effects of an artificial commercial feed supplementation on larval rearing and crablet production of mud crab Scylla tranquebarica. In mass production of mud crab seeds, only rotifer and Artemia nauplii are usually fed to mud crab larvae rearing until the larvae develop to crablet stage. The supplementation of artificial commercial feed from zoea-3 stage is expected to supply an essential nutrient required for an optimum larval development. The research was aimed to determine the optimum dosage of commercial feed supplementation for a successful larval rearing to produce crablet in hatchery. Newly hatched larvae of mud crab were stocked at a density of 100 ind./L. The larvae were fed with rotifer and Artemia nauplii. Microbound artificial commercial feed sized <100 microns (protein 52%, fat 14,5%, fiber 3% and water content 10%) was supplemented to the larvae from zoea-3 to megalopa stage at different dosages namely: a). 0.5 mg/L/2 days; b). 0.75 mg/L/2 days; c). 1.0 mg/L/2 days; d). 1.25 mg/L/2 days. Larval population, larval development indices (LDI), megalopa occurrence index (MOI) and crablet production were observed and measured. Water quality (ammonium, nitrite, Total Organic Matter (TOM), and total Vibrio sp. count were also monitored. The LDI, MOI, and crablet production from each treatment were compared and tested using one way-ANOVA. The results showed that the survival rate of larvae at zoea-5 ranged between 29-33%. The LDI was not significantly different (P>0.05) among treatments. However, the MOI of treatment A and B at day 21 ph was significantly higher (P<0.05) compared with treatment C and D. In addition, the crablet production in treatment B, C and D were significantly higher (P<0.05) compared with treatment A. It was concluded that the supplementation of artificial commercial feed in larval rearing of S. tranquebarica could be applied at the dosage range of 0.75-1.25 mg/L/2-days from zoea-3 until crablet (C-7) stage.

Abstract The MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region has long been a site of Hindi film consumption and circulation, with Dubai emerging in recent years as a potent hub for Bollywood’s overseas distribution and marketing. Though the role of the “Gulf” in articulating immigrant experiences and regional identity among Malayali Indians is well documented (Radhakrishnan 2009), Hindi cinema’s popularity in the region has rarely received any scholarly attention. In the past decade, UAE has witnessed the launch of three cable and satellite television channels—Zee Aflam (2009), Zee Alwan (2012) and MBC Bollywood (2013)—with dedicated Bollywood content, much of which is dubbed in Arabic and targeted primarily at the local Emirati audience. This paper examines the consumption and dissemination of this dubbed Indian content, which includes Bollywood films as well as Hindi television series, among the Arabic-speaking audience. As I argue, the current popularity of “Bollywood in Arabic” can be historicized and traced back to popular Hindi cinema’s consumption in the Gulf during the sixties and seventies, particularly among the local Emirati audience. In doing so, I not only extend the scope of Hindi film scholarship beyond the hegemonic parameters of the nation and its citizens, but also, interrogate the role of Dubai and the “Gulf” as a cultural capital of transnational media economics.

Abstract:
At least 50,000 working-class laborers from the West Indies, many of them poor and unemployed, remained with their families in central Panama after the construction of the Panama Canal in 1914. Over the next thirty years, along with a small number of West Indian professionals, religious leaders, and business owners, they established ways to sustain themselves in locales, both in Panama and the American-controlled Canal Zone, where they faced challenges and opposition. Their sizable presence interrupted ideals of elite politicians in Panama to Hispanicize the population. Nationalist Panamanians stigmatized them as culturally different competitors for canal maintenance jobs, and lacking in loyalty to the state because they clung to English and their British colonial citizenship. In the Canal Zone, they faced racial segregation and second-class status. This dissertation examines critical physical and cultural spaces the immigrants created to foster community, provide social and economic security, educate their children, and as a corollary, develop new identities. Using archival material, land records, interviews and historical newspapers from Panama and the United States, and informed by a wide range of secondary sources, the chapters examine the activism of West Indians, in the context of Panamanian historical trends. The case studies analyze involvement of the immigrants in three particular settings: as members of voluntary associations called lodges, as renters and residents of neighborhoods, and as shapers of education for their children, who were born into citizenship in Panama. West Indians had come to Panama from different island cultures and maintained many differences, yet in these settings they developed commonalities and shared experiences as West Indian Panamanians. In the process, West Indian immigrants influenced Panama's development in ways little acknowledged in Panamanian or American national, social or economic history.

En effet, cet objectif consacre par la resolution 2832 du 16 decembre 1971 de l'assemblee generale des nations unies visant d'une part, a eliminer de l'ocean indien' toute manifestation de la presence militaire des grandes puissances concue dans le contexte de rivalite et, d'autre part, a etablir en revanche un systeme de securite collective universelle, gagne davantage de credit. La fin de la guerre froide, malgre les apparences, ne le rend pas anachronique. Tout au contraire, les pays riverains de l'ocean indien appuyes par la majorite des pays en voie de developpement et les pays non alignes, et surtout par deux grandes puissances (chine et russie), sont determines a jamais pour la realisation de l'objectif global de zone de paix. Cette these explique la << viabilite >> (1ere partie) et la << perennite >> (2eme partie) d'un tel concept date de la guerre froide et qui dejoue la vigilance des specialistes des relations internationales. En particulier, l'auteur attire l'attention sur la conformite de cet objectif avec la chartedes nations unies et sur les valeurs immuables qui l'entretiennent que sont la demilitarisation, la denuclearisation et la cooperation.

Abstract:
This research focuses on applying littoral vulnerability assessment (LVA) into the coastal management process of Barbados, W. I. using a multipurpose rapid assessment technique, making the most of limited data and process knowledge. The conceptual and theoretical components of coastal vulnerability assessment set the context on which the LVA process is built. Three environmental sensitivity indices (ESIs) have been developed to using to a selection of the variables to characterise the coastline. Seventy four coastal locations are described according to the following ESIs: - Wave Exposure Index, Coastal Sensitivity Index, and Beach Aesthetic Index. These respectively represent the coastline being 92% being sheltered 64% having a high to very high sensitivity to oil pollution and 51% being of good to very good aesthetic quality Factor and cluster analyses were used to develop Coastal Vulnerability and Degree of Risk Indices. Twenty three coastal segments were analysed of which 52% were considered to be high to very highly vulnerable to erosion and potential storm wave damage. The south coast's most vulnerable locations are Casuarina, Dover and St Lawrence while west coast locations are Fitts Village, Paynes Bay and Sandy Lane. The highest degrees of risk locations identified were Casuarina, St. Lawrence. Batts Rock. Dover and Carlisle Bay. The research has also interpreted case studies using GIS and available socio economic information to quantify property vulnerability based on potential economic loss value. These results show that 88% of the coast is fully urbanized, with 63% being used in tourism infrastructure and having the greatest land value. The thesis also includes the construction of LVA profile model, which is intended to: 1) contribute to the formulation of future coastal management policies in Barbados and 2) provide an easy to implement monitoring procedure for small islands embarking on coastal management initiatives. The research demonstrates the use of scientifically valid yet inexpensive methods of quantitative shoreline monitoring and assessment, which could be of practical value in the coastal management of Small Island Developing States.

Les travaux de thèse présentés dans ce manuscrit portent sur l'étude de quatre éponges marines issues de la zone Sud-Ouest de l'Océan Indien : Plakortis kenyensis, Theonella swinhoei, Haliclona fascigera et Fascaplysinopsis reticulata. Les travaux entrepris comprenaient l'étude chimique de ces éponges incluant l'extraction, l'isolement et l'identification des métabolites secondaires par différentes techniques chromatographiques (CLMP, CLHP...) et spectroscopiques (UV-visible, HRMS, RMN 1D et 2D...). Douze métabolites secondaires ont été isolés de ces éponges dont six de structures nouvelles, à savoir : l'acide 2,5-époxydocosan-6-én-21-ynoïque (HF1), un acide gras atypique isolé de l'éponge Haliclona fascigera ; la 8-oxo-tryptamine (FR2), la 6,6’-bis-(débromo)- gelliusine F (FR3), la 6-bromo-2’-déméthyl-3’-N-méthyl-1’,8-dihydroaplysinopsine (FR6), la 5,6-dibromo-2’- déméthyl-3’-N-méthyl-1’,8-dihydroaplysinopsine (FR7) et la 5,6-dibromo-3’-déimino-2’-déméthyl-3’-oxo-1’,8- dihydroaplysinopsine (FR8), cinq alcaloïdes indoliques isolés de l'éponge Fascaplysinopsis reticulata. La valorisation des molécules isolées a ensuite été envisagée via l'évaluation de leurs activités biologiques. Parmi les douze molécules isolées, sept ont montré une activité antipaludique, trois une activité inhibitrice du quorum sensing de la bactérie bioluminescente Vibrio harveyi et cinq une activité anti-microfouling par inhibition de l'adhésion et/ou de la croissance de souches microbiennes marines
The work described in this manuscript concerns four sponges from the South-West Indian Ocean: Plakortis kenyensis, Theonella swinhoei, Haliclona fascigera and Fascaplysinopsis reticulata. The chemical study of the sponges including extraction, isolation and identification of secondary metabolites was undertaken using various chromatographic (MPLC, HPLC ...) and spectroscopic (UV-visible, HRMS, 1D and 2D NMR ...) techniques. Twelve secondary metabolites including six new molecules were isolated from these sponges. The new molecules are: 2,5-époxydocosan-6-en-21-ynoic acid (HF1) an unusual fatty acid isolated from the sponge Haliclona fascigera; 8-oxo-tryptamine (FR2), 6,6'-bis (debromo)-gelliusine F (FR3), 6-bromo-2'-demethyl-3'-N- methyl-1',8-dihydroaplysinopsine (FR6), 5,6-dibromo-2'-demethyl-3'-N-methyl-1',8-dihydroaplysinopsine (FR7) and 5,6-dibromo-3’-deimino-2’-demethyl-3’-oxo-1’,8-dihydroaplysinopsine (FR8), five indole alkaloids isolated from the sponge Fascaplysinopsis reticulata. The biological activities of the isolated molecules were then evaluated. Among the twelve isolated molecules, seven were active against the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum, three were identified as inhibitors of the quorum sensing-regulated bioluminescence in Vibrio harveyi and five, showing marine bacterial adhesion and/or growth inhibition, exhibited potential anti- microfouling activity

Abstract:
I analyzed the Seri Exclusive Fishing Zone (SEFZ) in the Gulf of California, to assess its efficiency in solving common fisheries management problems related to open access resources. A review of the major historical changes in the socio-cultural context of marine natural resource use in the region showed the SEFZ has allowed the Seri to successfully keep and improve control of access to the Infiernillo Channel, as well as reduce competition with fishers from Bahia Kino in a region with increasing competition for marine resources. However, the SEFZ showed severe limitations that produced conflicts of variable intensity. The most important were lack of clear geographic limits to SEFZ, clear systems to transfer fishing rights, and rights to defend with armed guards the integrity of their marine territory. The role of Seri and Federal Government authorities in conflict creation and resolution and the perception of the outcomes of these conflicts for Seri and Bahia Kino fishers are analyzed on four recent conflict events. Several potential opportunities to promote co-management of fisheries by the federal government and local fisheries management authorities emerged from the SEFZ. However, none of these opportunities, in the form of informal arrangements, succeeded in creating better relationships between Seri and Bahia Kino communities of fishers. I used the jaiba (Callinectes bellicosus) crab fishery inside the SEFZ to assess dynamics of marine resources under Seri common property ownership. I found that inside the SEFZ fishing effort is controlled, the fishing ban is honored, fishing areas are rotated throughout the season, and no-fishing zones are functional. I used data from jaiba buyers, and extensive catch sampling during two fishing seasons, to determine yearly production in Punta Chueca, as well as average daily catch and other descriptive catch statistics. Jaiba is an important resource in the economy of Punta Chueca, and its local management has been facilitated by the SEFZ to produce a fishery that, to date, appears to be sustainable. However, the long-term viability of this fishery inside the SEFZ is vulnerable to outside harvesting patterns and to political and economic influences over which the Seri have no control.

Le principal objectif de cette thèse, au caractère interdisciplinaire, concernait l'étude de l'éponge Biemna laboutei de Madagascar, connue pour sa toxicité (causant notamment des dermatites). Les travaux entrepris comprenaient en premier lieu, l'étude chimique de cette éponge incluant l'extraction, l'isolement et l'identification des métabolites secondaires par différentes techniques chromatographiques (CLMP, CLHP…) et spectroscopiques (UV-visible, HRMS, RMN 1D et 2D…). Dix-huit alcaloïdes appartenant à la classe rare des hétérocycles tricycliques (5,6,8b)-triazaperhydroacénaphtylène (i.e. ptilocaulines, mirabilines, nétamines) ont été isolés et identifiés. Douze de ces alcaloïdes tricycliques guanidiniques, de structures nouvelles, ont été nommées nétamines H-S. Ces composés ont été classés en fonction des insaturations de leur noyau tricyclique : type pyrimidine, insaturés en Δ8,8a et insaturés en Δ8a,8b. Pour deux des composés isolés, les nétamines I (58) et J (59), une étude configurationnelle reposant sur la comparaison de spectres UV et DCE, expérimentaux et théoriques (théorie de la fonctionnelle et de la densité), a permis la détermination de leurs configurations absolues : 5aS, 7R, 8R pour la nétamine I et 5aS, 7R, 8S pour la nétamine J. La valorisation des molécules isolées a ensuite été envisagée via d'une part la réalisation d'une étude chimiotaxonomique et d'autre part, l'évaluation de leurs activités biologiques (cytotoxicité, activité antipaludique, …). La nétamine M (62) a présenté une activité cytotoxique sur les cellules cancéreuses KB (CI50 = 1,0 μg/mL) et les nétamines O (64), Q (66) et K (60) se sont montrées actives contre le parasite Plasmodium falciparum, responsable du paludisme avec respectivement une CI50 de 4,66 ; 2,53 et 0,62 μg/mL. The main purpose of this interdisciplinary thesis was to study Biemna laboutei, a sponge from Madagascar, known to have toxic properties (dermatitis-producing). The chemical investigation of this sponge including extraction, isolation and identification of secondary metabolites was first undertaken using several chromatographic (HPLC, MPLC…) and spectroscopic (UV-visible, HRMS, NMR 1D et 2D…) techniques. Eighteen alkaloids belonging to the rare class of tricyclic (5,6,8b)-triazaperhydroacenaphtylene heterocycles (i.e. ptilocaulins, mirabilins, netamines) were isolated and identified. Twelve new alkaloids from this group of guanidine derivatives were named netamine H-S. These compounds were grouped on the basis of unsaturation and double bond regiochemistry, with pyrimidine, Δ8,8a and Δ8a,8b heterocycles. For two compounds, netamine I (58) and J (59), a joint theoretical (Density functional theory) and experimental study of UV and ECD spectra allowed the determination of their absolute configuration: 5aS, 7R, 8R for netamine I and 5aS, 7R, 8S for netamine J. The chemotaxonomic meaning of these alkaloids was discussed. Their biological activities were also evaluated. Netamine M (62) exhibited a cytotoxic activity towards KB cells (IC50 = 1,0 μg/mL) while netamine O (64), Q (66) and K (60) were active against the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum with IC50 value of 4,66; 2,53 and 0,62 μg/mL respectively. Finally, this work was also dedicated to the biomimetic synthesis of the tricyclic guanidine skeleton. Three new synthesis routes were explored

AbstractThe texts analysed in this chapter span the first three decades of India’s independence. Polish reporters document both the change that occurred in postcolonial India, and the lingering effects of foreign rule on society and culture of the Subcontinent. It is a former contact zone, a post-contact zone, where the former colonisers are absent but their presence can still be felt. Polish reporters visiting India in the 1950s and early 1960s, such as Witold Koehler, Jerzy Ros and Wiesław Górnicki often voice their critique of British colonialism, especially as (semi-official) representatives of a communist state, the Polish People’s Republic. In their accounts, they mention clubs allowing entry only to foreigners, the conflicts stirred by the colonial administration, lasting longer than the British rule, the greed of industrialists and the oppression of peasants. The reporters underline their anti-colonial viewpoint, but in many situations, they are trapped in the convention of colonial relations. Thus, the main question is whether reporters from socialist Poland can truly be anti-colonial, and, given their own dependence from the Soviet Union, can they be anti-imperialist?

With the recent identification of the Wabash Valley Seismic Zone in addition to the New Madrid Seismic Zone, Indiana’s Department of Transportation (INDOT) has become concerned with ensuring the adequate seismic performance of their bridge network. While INDOT made an effort to reduce the seismic vulnerability of newly-constructed bridges, many less recent bridges still have the potential for vulnerability. Analyzing these bridges’ seismic vulnerability is a vital task. However, developing a detailed dynamic model for every bridge in the state using information from structural drawings is rather tedious and time-consuming. In this study, we develop a simplified dynamic assessment procedure using readily-available information from INDOT’s Bridge Asset Management Program (BIAS), to rapidly identify vulnerable bridges throughout the state. Eight additional data items are recommended to be added into BIAS to support the procedure. The procedure is applied in the Excel file to create a tool, which is able to automatically implement the simplified bridge seismic analysis procedure. The simplified dynamic assessment procedure and the Excel tool enable INDOT to perform seismic vulnerability assessment and identify bridges more frequently. INDOT can prioritize these bridges for seismic retrofits and efficiently ensure the adequate seismic performance of their assets.

For over a decade, segment-based probe data has been extensively used by transportation stakeholders for monitoring mobility on Indiana roadways. However, enhanced probe data from connected vehicles includes a richer dataset that can provide more detailed real-time and after-action reviews. This enhanced data includes detailed vehicle trajectories, at 3s resolution, and “event data.” This event data is near real-time and includes hard-braking events, hard-acceleration events, weather-related data, including wiper activations and some seat belt usage data. This project developed a set of methodologies and resulting visualizations that enables the use of emerging connected vehicle data in operational decision-making on work zone management and winter operations activities. Each month approximately 13 billion connected vehicle records are ingested for Indiana. During peak periods, approximately 625,000 records per minute are ingested. Without substantial processing, this large data set is “data-rich, information-poor.” This study developed techniques to rapidly assign relevant data to interstate segments so that visual graphics could be efficiently generated. This provided the ability for both real-time monitoring as well as after action assessment to identify opportunities to improve both work zone operations and winter operation activities. The summaries derived from these datasets have helped promote effective actionable dialog among agencies, contractors, and public safety colleagues towards the overarching goal of improving interstate safety and mobility.

The project focused on two specific objectives: (1) to design a public awareness campaign to increase drivers’ knowledge and influence positive attitudes about work zone driver safety practices; and (2) to prepare educational materials to be incorporated into driver’s education or training curriculum prior to taking driving test and getting a driver’s license issued. The campaign was informed by formative research, conducted using a survey to assess public knowledge and attitudes. Based on these results, campaign messages were designed. The team also designed an education curriculum which consists of three modules and fourteen knowledge questions. This report concludes with recommendations to INDOT for the successful implementation of the public awareness campaign and educational materials, that might be applicable to other states as well.

Abstract:
Historically, a network of roadside sensors and cameras have been used to monitor freeway conditions. Although these systems are effective, they are typically not operational in and around work zones. Furthermore, it is often not financially viable to deploy in-road sensors and cameras in rural areas. Connected vehicle trajectory data has emerged as a viable source of data and provides a unique opportunity for monitoring freeways. This monograph describes how these connected vehicles can be used to directly measure queue lengths and travel times and this description is summarized in a graphical format easily used by agencies to make management decisions. Approximately 50 use cases are described to demonstrate these techniques under diverse conditions, such as lane reductions, short term closures, rolling slowdowns, work zone set up, work zone removal and inclement weather. A number of the use cases were selected from Indiana locations that had good ITS camera coverage to provide context-sensitive information to help the reader understand the graphics. In addition, several case studies are presented from selected states around the country to demonstrate the scalability of these techniques.

Abstract:
There are times when the traffic lanes through a work zone must be kept clear for activities such as placing overhead beams, erecting overhead signs, and installing power lines, and other temporary roadway work activities. As an alternative to a full road closure, a rolling slowdown can typically provide up to 30 minutes to complete such activities without bringing approaching traffic to a complete halt. Using data from recent rolling slowdowns and full closures carried on the Indiana interstate network and a simulation approach, this study compares rolling slowdowns to full closures from safety and mobility standpoints. The study suggests that while rolling slowdowns are more impactful in terms of travel times, they are a safer option than full closures as they often form a forward moving shockwave causing, lower hard braking rates, and consequently a lower probability of causing a crash.

Abstract:
A re-evaluation of the age of the formations comprising the Eagle Plain Group of northern Yukon was necessitated by widely disparate age determinations in recent years from various authors. Maximum age estimates for the base of the group have varied from middle Albian to Cenomanian, and age estimates for the uppermost strata varied by an even greater range, from Cenomanian to late Maastrichtian. A re-examination of new and archival foraminiferal and palynological data indicates an age range of Cenomanian to late Maastrichtian for the Eagle Plain Group. The late Maastrichtian age is derived from palynology from the northeasternmost area of Eagle Plain. However, the stratigraphic relationship of these youngest beds within Eagle Plain Group remains uncertain. Marine strata of the Eagle Plain Group contain foraminiferal indices that correlate with long-established regional foraminiferal zones from the Mackenzie Delta area. The Cenomanian Zone of Trochammina superstes occurs in the Parkin and Boundary Creek formations of Eagle Plain and Mackenzie Delta, respectively. The Haplophragmoides bilobatus and overlying Glaphyrammina spirocompressa zones occur in the Burnthill Creek and Smoking Hills formations of Eagle Plain and Mackenzie Delta, respectively. Reworked microfossils are a conspicuous feature of strata within the Eagle Plain Group. The basal sandstone of the Parkin Formation, for example, contains an assemblage of foraminifera that is entirely reworked. Palynomorph assemblages through the Eagle Plain Group have been estimated at as much as 99% reworked in some strata.

With specific regard to interstates in the rural area, Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has expressed a need for research that sheds light on this Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) issue so the agency [INDOT and the contractor] can make informed decisions regarding the crossover sections versus the closure in one direction with detour roads. A number of studies have investigated the advantages and disadvantages of various MOT strategies; however, there is no specific study that can help INDOT traffic engineers and design engineers make decisions by comparing direct and indirect benefits of crossovers and detours (full lane closures). This research examined the advantages and disadvantages of entirely closing one direction of traffic over traditional work zone techniques (such as partial lane closure through median crossover) from the perspectives of the agency, road users, and the community. In the case of full closure, the study (a) examined the alternative MOT strategies and best practices through an extensive literature review and survey of agencies (b) investigated risk, benefit, and costs associated with selected detour routes (c) validated the identified critical factors through case studies in Indiana and at other states, and (d) implemented best practices in an expected project to evaluate the safety, mobility, and cost benefits of closing one direction. Through the literature review and four case studies, eleven KPIs for MOT strategy developments were identified. This study prioritized these KPIs through the survey questionnaire. The top five KPIs are (1) safety, (2) mobility, (3) budget constraint, (4) project duration, (5) complexity of project sites. Based on these KPIs and other findings presented in Section 4.3.3, this study has proposed a comparison tool for predetermined MOT strategies in the form of a flow-chart. This tool is followed by the scores or weights associated with each KPI. These scores are normalized—i.e., the most important KPI which is safety, has the maximum weightage 1 and rest of the KPIs are weighed relatively. INDOT has a set of editable documents which are references for making MOT decisions. This proposed flow-chart tool will “walk” the INDOT team through the use of these spreadsheets corresponding to the identified KPIs through this study. It will be at the discretion of the INDOT team as to which KPIs are relevant to the situation at hand. Therefore, the flow-chart tool is flexible to incorporate the dynamic nature of MOT strategy selection.

Abstract:
The Rush Valley 30' x 60' quadrangle extends southwest and west from the greater Salt Lake City–Provo metropolitan area with land use varied between public, military, Indian reservation, and private. This 1:62,500-scale geologic map will aid the proper management of land, water, and other resources. The map area lies within the eastern Basin and Range Province. Mountain ranges are composed of unexposed basement rocks overlain by exposed Neoproterozoic through Triassic rocks that are about 10.4 miles (16.8 km) thick, and by numerous Tertiary sedimentary and volcanic units (~47 to 20 Ma). The intervening valleys include bedrock covered with Miocene-Pliocene? rocks (~11 to 4 Ma) and Neogene-Quaternary surficial deposits. The map area is on the southern flank of the Uinta-Tooele structural zone. This area is in the Charleston-Nebo (Provo) salient of the Sevier fold-thrust belt and some thrust faults are exposed, but the overall Sevier belt geometry is obscured by extensive Cenozoic cover and later faulting. Following Sevier deformation, calk-alkaline volcanism occurred from several Paleogene volcanic centers (42 to 25 Ma). Extensional tectonism created the distinctive basin and range topography from about 20 Ma to the present. Early extensional basin fill includes Miocene sedimentary and volcanic rocks followed by Pliocene-Holocene surficial deposits primarily from lacustrine and alluvial depositional environments. Valley areas were covered by late Pleistocene Lake Bonneville, and deposits are associated with three levels of regional shorelines. Normal faults cut the ranges and are known to bound some valley margins where not concealed. Although deep drill hole data are relatively sparse, gravity data were used to help constrain basin geometries.
