Abstract:
ABSTRACT On the basis of case studies from Chemnitz, Zittau, Zwickau and Schneeberg, the author demonstrates the far-reaching influence of Melanchthon even on the third generation after the Reformation and the close humanistic and “philippistic” personal relations among its members. The city Latin schools prove to be the centers and disseminators of Philippism, and the scholars involved are often persecuted as Cryptocalvinists. By means of the study of personal histories, the author differentiates more sharply between Philippism and Cryptocalvinism.

Abstract:
The Central state Archive in Dresden has recently acquired new archival material relating to Africa. Although of modest proportions, this material would certainly be of interest for specialized studies. It consists of two parts: records of the firm Hermann Schubert, and the papers of the German colonial politician Oskar Wilhelmn Stübel.Hermann Schubert's firm was established in 1862 as a small textile factory in Zittau. It grew rapidly and in the first third of the twentieth century assumed a leading role in the world market for sewing thread. In 1907, in collaboration with the colonial authorities of the German Reich, it established a cotton plantation in the Rufiji District of German East Africa (today southern Tanzania) known as Schuberthof. Partly due to a lack of experience in growing cotton, the plantation sustained considerable losses and was abandoned after World War I.Records concerning Schuberthof form part of the papers of the firm Hermann Schubert/VEB Textilwerke Zittau. They are of a fragmentary nature; all that has survived are reports of the plantation to the firm's headquarters for 1909, and documents relating to a visit of the firm's head to German East Africa in 1907. The latter includes travel notes, reports on conversations with Walter Rathenau and the secretary of State for Colonies, as well as glass plates with snapshots of a tourist nature.Oskar Wilhelm Stübel was born in Dresden in 1846. He studied at the universities of Leipzig, Berlin, and Heidelberg, obtained his doctorate in Leipzig, and entered the Saxon civil service.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Workshop 1994 in Zittau ihren Anfang nahm.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
Plunging jets play an important role in nuclear reactor safety research. In the present paper the case of the strainer clogging issue is considered. Entrained air caused by a plunging jet has an influence of the liquid flow field and on the fibre transport in the sump. In the paper the amount of entrained air is given as an inlet boundary condition according to correlations in the literature and confirmed by own experiments. The influence of entrained air on the fibre deposition pattern at the bottom of a tank and on the mixing procedure for the case of temperature differences between jet and tank water are investigated by CFD calculations and compared to experiments. The presented work is part of a joint research project performed in cooperation between the University of Applied Science Zittau/Go¨rlitz and Forschungszentrum Dresden-Rossendorf. The project deals with the experimental investigation of particle transport phenomena in coolant flow in Zittau and the development of CFD models for its simulation in Rossendorf (Krepper et al. 2008).

Abstract:
The investigation of insulation debris generation, transport and sedimentation becomes important with regard to reactor safety research for PWR and BWR, when considering the long-term behavior of emergency core cooling systems during all types of loss of coolant accidents (LOCA). The insulation debris released near the break during a LOCA incident consists of a mixture of disparate particle population that varies with size, shape, consistency and other properties. Some fractions of the released insulation debris can be transported into the reactor sump, where it may perturb/impinge on the emergency core cooling systems. Open questions of generic interest are the sedimentation of the insulation debris in a water pool, its possible re-suspension and transport in the sump water flow and the particle load on strainers and corresponding pressure drop. A joint research project on such questions is being performed in cooperation between the University of Applied Sciences Zittau/Go¨rlitz and the Forschungszentrum Dresden-Rossendorf. The project deals with the experimental investigation of particle transport phenomena in coolant flow and the development of CFD models for its description. While the experiments are performed at the University at Zittau/Go¨rlitz, the theoretical modeling efforts are concentrated at Forschungszentrum Dresden-Rossendorf. In the current paper the basic concepts for CFD modeling are described and feasibility studies including the conceptual design of the experiments are presented.

Currently, it is not sufficiently clear if there might be a loss of integrity of the fuel rods within such long periods, e.g. due to rising pressure from gaseous products of nuclear decay. Regarding a final evaluation, extrapolative modelling of the radiochemical and thermomechanical material behavior is challenging and not suitable for predictions on the condition of storage container inventory after the intermediate storage period. Therefore, it is of public interest to find measurement principles or methods which can provide information about the condition of the storage container inventory. In line with a cooperative project (project partners: Technical University Dresden, Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences) different measurement principles and methods (radiation emission, muon transmission, thermography, acoustical spectrometry) for non-invasive condition monitoring of the storage container inventory in case of prolonged intermediate storage are going to be investigated and evaluated. The results shall help to determine suitable methods for the identification of both changes of the spent fuel and inner container structure over long periods without opening the container and would be a significant contribution for the long-term safety of intermediately stored highly radioactive waste. Furthermore, suitable methods would provide information about the transport and conditioning ability of the waste before transfer to the repository. This paper deals with the content of the subproject of Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences as well as with the approach for project realization. A further main part of this paper is the development of experimental infrastructure to support the investigations.

Abstract:
The gamma radiation emitted by a nuclear reactor core might contain information about the reactor state. This information may be used in a monitoring system for severe accidents. The Technische Universität Dresden and the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences are currently carrying out feasibility studies for the development of such a system in a collaborative effort. As one part of such feasibility studies we performed Monte Carlo simulations on a simplified model of a generic pressurized water reactor. For a set of states which represent scenarios of a coolant level decrease and core melt, the gamma radiation distribution outside the reactor pressure vessel has been computed. The results are presented in this paper. They indicate that different coolant levels yield different gamma radiation distributions, and that an accumulation of corium inside the lower head is detectable from the outside.

Abstract:
Background of experimental and methodical work is the loss of coolant accident (LOCA) with release of fibrous pipe insulation material. Latest investigations were focused on material deposition and distribution (cross mixing) in the reactor core. Therefore, a 2×2 PWR fuel assembly (FA) cluster was constructed. Four shortened PWR-FA-dummies are provided with separated in- and outlets. Every 16×16 fuel rod dummy consists of 20 control rod simulators, two spacers, FA-head and FA-bottom with a 3.5×3.5 mm integrated debris-screen filter (IDF). The cluster is encased in an acrylic housing for visual observation. It is connected with the test facility “Zittau Flow Tray” (ZFT), a simplified sump model, which allows inclusion and investigation of complex phenomena like material sedimentation in the sump and strainer blockages. A well mixing of air in the fluid was also considered by free jet expansions and flows through full cone-nozzles as well as marginal air entrainments. This Paper includes descriptions of applied measuring techniques (digital image processing, thrubeam laser sensors etc.) and an overview of all considered boundary conditions. Experimental results, aiming at the development, implementation and verification of multiphase flow and strainer models, are presented.

Abstract:
In line with the cooperative project “Non-invasive Condition Monitoring of Nuclear Reactors for the Detection of Level Change and Deformation of the Core” between the Technical University Dresden and the Institute of Process Technology, Process Automation and Measuring Technology (IPM) of Zittau/Goerlitz University of Applied Sciences, a measuring system for the core state diagnosis during a core melt accident in the reactor pressure vessel of a pressurized water reactor is going to be developed. The operational principle of this system is based on the non-invasive measurement of continuously changing gamma radiations (caused by the shifting of melted materials and fission products) outside of the reactor pressure vessel by means of several gamma radiation sensors. The sensors are arranged over the height of the core and the lower head. By using computer based and real-time capable methods for evaluation of the measured gamma radiations conclusions about the core state can subsequently be drawn. This paper includes a description of a concept as well as several methods for the core state diagnosis during a core melt accident. The main part is the analysis of the methods for the core state diagnosis based on different evaluation criteria.

Abstract:
Background of the experimental and methodical work is a loss of coolant accident (LOCA) in a Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR). During LOCA, both the leakage water jet as well as the water in the containment can lead to corrosion of galvanized installations (e.g. grates). That means a change of consistency and chemical properties of the coolant water during the sump recirculation operation, in particular an increase of the zinc concentration (Zn2+ ions in dissolution) and the pH-value. Furthermore, it leads to separation of layer-forming zinc compounds (e.g. zinc borate) at hotspots (fouling at fuel assemblies) and/or the crystallization of zinc corrosion products out of the coolant in hot areas [HOF10]. This in turn causes a decrease of pH-value and, consequently, an increase of the corrosiveness of the coolant flow. This can come along with a chemical transformation of zinc borate to nearly indissoluble zinc oxide by thermo hydrolysis. Spalling parts of the coating on the surface of the fuel rods could lead to the release of particles into coolant water flow. In combination with the release of fibrous insulation material, which can be transported into the reactor containment, containment building sump and connected systems, this process causes pressure build-ups at the strainers and the spacers of the fuel assemblies and a reduction of the pump performance. In this case, efficient heat dissipation cannot be guaranteed. In a joint research project between the Institute of Process Technology, Process Automation and Measuring Technology (IPM) of University Zittau/Goerlitz and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), the influence of different boundary conditions like the flow structures in the reactor pressure vessel, temperature distributions and the temperature gradient in the central core regions will be investigated. Therefore, in a final step a test facility containing a 3×3 heated fuel rod dummy configuration was designed and constructed. The design and development of the test facility was accompanied by pre-test calculations and CFD simulations to get information about local surface and fluid temperatures under different flow conditions.

Abstract:
Generic investigations regarding the influence of corrosion processes of hot-dip galvanized PWR containment installations on strainer clogging as well as on the coolant chemistry and possible resulting in-core effects are carried out within joint research projects of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), TU Dresden (TUD) and Zittau-Görlitz University of Applied Sciences (HSZG). Lab-scale experiments at HZDR and TUD are focused on elucidation of physico-chemical corrosion and precipitation processes as well as resulting clogging effects. Results of generic experiments in a lab-scale corrosion test facility suggest that there is a multi-stage corrosion process. The first stage comprises dissolution of the zinc layer in the coolant forming zinc ions and in turn affecting the coolant chemistry. During the second stage, the base material (steel) corrodes forming insoluble corrosion particles, which can subsequently lead to accelerated clogging of fiber-laden strainers within a few hours. The main influences on corrosion were identified as impact of the coolant jet onto the corroding surface, water chemistry and zinc surface / coolant volume ratio. Furthermore, retrograde solubility of zinc corrosion products in boric acid containing coolants with increasing temperature was observed. Thus, formation and deposition of solid corrosion products cannot be ruled out if zinc containing coolant is heated up during its recirculation into hot downstream components (e.g. hot-spots in core). Corrosion experiments, which included formation of corrosion products at a heated cladding tube, proved that zinc, dissolved in the coolant at low sump temperatures, turns into solid deposits of zinc borates when contacting heated zircaloy surfaces. Due to alternating heating and cooling of the coolant during sump recirculation operation, a cycle of zinc corrosion and zinc borate precipitation may be initiated, which may eventually influence the thermal hydraulics in downstream components during the post-LOCA stage. The results obtained at lab-scale were confirmed by corresponding experiments in semi-technical test facilities of the project partner HSZG. Based on the experimental results, water chemical measures were tested to reduce corrosion and/or zinc borate precipitation effects.

Abstract:
The presented work is part of a joint research project performed in cooperation between the Forschungszentrum Dresden and University of Applied Sciences Zittau/Goerlitz. The paper deals with experimental investigations concerning the influence of an impinging jet on sedimented insulation material in the building sump of the reactor containment. One of the main tasks in reactor safety research is the safe heat dissipation from the reactor core and the containment of light-water reactors. In the case of loss of coolant accident (LOCA) the possibility of the entry of insulation material into the containment and the building sump of the containment and into the associated systems to the residual heat exhaust is a serious problem. In the long-term phase of a LOCA the coolant ejected by the pipe leakage falls several meters onto the sump water surface. On this way, the jet is mixed with air. Furthermore, the impinging jet will entrain air bubbles into the building sump of the reactor containment. The entrained air bubbles will rise and have an additional influence on the flow field in the sump and of the sedimented insulation material. Hence, the impinging jet has an influence of the insulation material transport in the sump. To investigate the influence of an impinging jet a special test facility was designed. The test facility “Tank” was build up with acrylic glass. Thereby it is possible to use laser PIV to measure the flow field and high-speed video to analyze the jet-structure in the test facility. With help of this instrumentation the following experiments were performed: • Experiments without air entrainment and different distances between pipe outlet and water surface in the test facility. • Experiments with air entrainment, different distances between pipe outlet and water surface in the test facility and different flow velocities of the impinging jet. • Experiments with a cold impinging jet and hot water in the test facility for a defined distance between pipe outlet and water surface and a defined jet velocity of the jet. The main goal of the experiments is to study the physical phenomena of the impinging jet and provide experimental data for verification of CFD models. The corresponding CFD investigations are reported by Krepper et al. [KRE10].
