Abstract:

The goal of this research is to examine how zines--self-published alternative magazines that are part of Do It Yourself (DIY) independent media scenes-- are used to assert subjectivities. This research examines the entire bodies of work of five zinesters. It situates the work in New Literacy Studies, narrative research, and other zine scholarship. By exploring zinesters' works as they use it to perform literacy over time, this research redefines zines. It moves zines away from being seen as simply a way for young women to be active cultural producers and situates zines in autobiographical writing where life narratives are created and recreated as zinesters perform differing subjectivities over time. Through narrative analysis, this research looks at the following five zinesters and the subjectivities they perform at different stages in their zine career. Cindy Crabb creates a confessional space within her zines to tell secrets and stories around her body: specifically survivor narratives. Alex Wrekk positions herself as part of the punk scene and transforms her personal identity as she participates in the zine and punk scenes. Kelly Shortandqueer asserts transgender subject positions throughout his zines and the writing of his transnarrative. Lauren Martin creates autographic zines through her artist subjectivity. Davida Breier shares small stories throughout her zines, as is exemplified in her Intros. The results of this work allows for exploration into zines as a cultural literacy practice. More importantly, it examines and defines zines as life-long literacies--those literacy sites that people choose to participate within during varying times of their lives and not only during specific situational occurrences such as school or work--and zine creators as permanent writers. Zines allow a better understanding of what it means to perform literacy work in meaningful ways which permit participants to examine and reexamine, define and redefine, and construct and reconstruct subjectivities as they move through time and various social, cultural, and personal scenes.

Abstract:
Thesis (M. Arch.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 2005.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 69-71).
This thesis project pursues the strategies to create urban design interventions that preserve and encourage multi-religious harmony in the contested sacred topography of Jerusalem. First, I observed the environmental and social qualities of religious coexistence by studying a pilgrimage site in Jerusalem currently shared by groups from the three monotheistic faiths, the Masjid al-Nabi Da'ud (the Mosque of the Prophet David) on Jerusalem's present-day Mt. Zion district, which is adjacent to the southern wall of the Old City. I then proposed to transform the neighborhood surrounding the pilgrimage complex by honoring the observed dynamics of coexistence, in an attempt to create a harmonious, multi-religious space in Jerusalem's sacred landscape. My intention is to create a pluralistic public sphere that serves to promote dialogue and reconciliation between the adherents of the three Abrahamic traditions. Such a place of religious harmony, to borrow the words of Louis Kahn, will present an urban environment that can serve as "a place of the example". The new district will serve as the headquarters and residency of an institution for ecumenical dialogue called the Nathan Foundation for Monotheism, which will be run by a board made up of members of the three different traditions (including the current religious parities dwelling on Mt. Zion) and partner initially with the Open Society Institute and Soros Foundations Network. In the spirit of the virtue of "hospitality", traditionally associated with Abraham, the center of the Nathan Foundation will house venues for research, exhibition, celebration and worship for each of the three faiths.
(cont.) The new district will develop along a public promenade offering dramatic views of Jerusalem from one of its highest promontories. I will attempt to induce, in the pilgrim and inhabitant, a sense of wandering between cultures and faiths, an experience that will help reconstitute, with the aid of Jerusalem's religious topography, something of that reflective journeying of Abraham through the cosmopolitan swath of the Fertile Crescent.

Abstract:

Abstract:
During the winter of 2011–2012, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) and Office of Public Archaeology (OPA) at Brigham Young University (BYU) conducted archaeological explorations in urban Provo, Utah. The purpose of the research was to uncover and document the extant remains of the Original or Old Provo Tabernacle (OPT; 42UT1844). The data recovered from that excavation was the impetus for the current study. Through a combination of documentary and archaeological evidence, and using Mormon theology as a lens through which to interpret the actions of nineteenth century Latter-day Saints, this thesis demonstrates the important role played by the OPT in the project of Mormon Zion in the American West. The OPT was the first proposed and eighth completed tabernacle in the LDS Church. In the OPT, Brigham Young initiated a dynamic new building form which was intended to accommodate both the political and economic needs of LDS settlements at a distance from Salt Lake City and the central hierarchy of the Church while simultaneously providing space for Mormon worship and ritual practice. These buildings sought to prepare the Saints of early Utah for the eventual construction of temples throughout the region and, like the Tabernacle of the Congregation anciently, served to build strong communal ties in outlying Mormon settlements.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research has been to study contemporary Mormon migration in the United States. The underlying assumption of the research was that Utah Mormons are culturally and normatively different from Mormons living elsewhere. Research was carried out in two stages. The first stage was a description of migration streams between four designated regions, i.e. Utah, states adjacent to Utah, other Western states, and the remaining Other states. This stage also determined the proportion of return migration in each stream. It provides initial evidence of the cultural pull of Utah for Mormons. The second stage was a multivariate analysis of predictors of Mormon return migration in the United States between 1976 and 1981. A theoretical framework of measures of cultural and religious attachment (within the conceptualization of location-specific capital) and status and distance migration differentials was used. Seven models were tested. Each model looked at particular migration directions, i.e. to Utah, to regions other than Utah, from Utah, two models of return to Utah, and two models of return to regions other than Utah. Findings show that migration to regions other than Utah are predicted better by predominantly socioeconomic stat us variables. destination But migration involving Utah as an origin or also require measures of cultural and/or religious commitment as well. These findings tend to support the conclusion that the intensity of cultural location-specific capital of Utah, as the Mormon cultural core, does influence the type and magnitude of Mormon migration.

Abstract:
The theme of the sublimity of Zion in Jl 4,15-17 shows an image of YHWH who takes care of loving way for his people. In the face of natural disasters and war, the experience of the relationship between the people of Judah and Jerusalem, YHWH does awakening consciousness that the faith must be greater than the fear of an uncertain future. This study concludes that Jl 4,15-17 has as background the theological tradition of Zion, but with a theocentric focus. The sublimity of Zion in Jl 4,15-17 is linked with the main theme of yôm YHWH and develops in parallel to this. This relationship implies an integral unit of the themes in the book. The yôm YHWH, present in all chapters of the book of Joel, presents itself the positive direction and salvation to Judah-Jerusalem. The sublimity of Zion in Joel 4,15-17 corroborates with this yôm, being an oracle of salvation for the chosen people. The text also reveals points of contact terminological and thematic with book of Joel and some books of the corpus of the Twelve Prophets. The theological concept of tradition of Sion, by preference for the chosen people in the Holy City of Jerusalem, from the viewpoint of the book of Joel, marks an important aspect of biblical faith vetero-testamentary.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the founding and development of Pinesdale, Montana. Established by the Mormon fundamentalist leader Rulon Allred and his group in 1961, the town served as a haven for those practicing polygamy as well as an opportunity for group members to live a Mormon form of communalism known as the United Order. Compelled by the social upheaval and shifting cultural standards in the United States and instability in international affairs during the Cold War era, the fundamentalists considered the two practices to be essential to Christian perfection and preparation for a biblical Apocalypse and Millennium. But as a sect comprised of individuals who broke away from the Latter-day Saint Church, dissension continued to characterize the group, compromising communal efforts. The conflict between communalism and individualism in the community recalled an archetypical American struggle that can be traced to Puritan communities and seen repeated in the history of the American West. Like other groups in the West, Pinesdale wanted to preserve its autonomy, but when it sought self-government by incorporating as a city, it became dependent upon the American government. This pushed the community further into the mainstream, a tendency accelerated by the loss of an apocalyptic paradigm at the end of the Cold War. The story of Pinesdale here contributes to a growing scholarship of communalism in America and ethnic groups in the West that is more inclusive and less exceptional, and demonstrates how American the community had been in the context of the postwar period.

Abstract:
This thesis seeks to understand the rationale for membership in the Zion community envisaged by Isaiah 56-66. Previous scholarship has produced no holistic consideration for the use of the Abrahamic and Sinaitic covenants in the depiction of Zion's establishment. Part One of this thesis investigates the Zion community and its membership rationale, Abrahamic and Sinaitic covenantal roots, and Zion's establishment as Yahweh's community in the Core (Is. 60:1-62:12). Part Two shows how the rationale is applied to membership, i.e., to both inclusions and exclusions in the Framework sections (Is. 56-57; 65-66). Select exegesis of the Core shows the establishment of the Zion community (Ch. 1), then allusions in the Core to the earlier Abrahamic and Sinaitic covenants are used to compare the establishment of Zion with that of Abraham and Israel respectively (Chs. 2-3). Finally exegesis of the Framework sections demonstrates application of the rationale for inclusions in and exclusions from the community (Chs. 4-6). The covenantal nature of Zion's establishment is the key to her membership; its granting is seen in the promise of inclusions and its withdrawal in the threats of exclusions. Allegiance to Yahweh and holiness constitute the rationale for membership.

Roadman, Adrian Argie. "Ringtail distribution, dermatoglyphics, and diet in Zion National Park, Utah." Thesis, Utah State University, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1584442.

Abstract:

Current scientific knowledge of the ringtail (Bassariscus astutus ) is limited, thus impeding appropriate management decisions. Ringtails in Zion National Park, Utah, are rarely seen, but are involved in increasing occurrences of negative interactions with park visitors and employees such as food theft and denning in buildings, interactions which are harmful to both parties. To manage this conflict, an update to the general knowledge about the status of the population is required as the only previous study on ringtails in this area was conducted in the 1960s. Using noninvasive techniques provides dependable large-scale population information. I used two noninvasive detection methods in combination to establish a robust occupancy estimate of the ringtail population in Zion National Park. Ringtails were detected in 2 of 3 focus areas in the park, but at low densities. This study included the development of a novel method to individually identify ringtails by their footprints. I used the Interactive Individual Identification System (I3S) software to determine if individuals could be identified using the pattern formed by papillae and ridges of the footpad. Ringtails' footpad prints consistently resulted in a unique pattern recognizable by simple visual analysis and a computer-aided analysis of the prints in a database; however more research is needed for the applicability using field data. Ringtail densities were highest in the areas of greatest human activity. The proximity to humans may be impacting ringtail diet and consequently their health. I collected scat in areas of high and low human use to quantify the change in diet resulting from food acquired around human establishments. Ringtails living in areas of high human activity exhibited a change in diet, including the presence of human trash such as foil and plastic; this has implications for ringtail health and human safety. Ringtails acquiring food from human sources may increase their activities around buildings and areas with high human activity, resulting in an increased chance of direct and indirect human-ringtail interactions. Active management of human activities and regular building maintenance is required in the future to decrease negative consequences of ringtail use and presence in areas of high human activity.

Balli, Tyler A. "Reading in Zion: Book Cultures of Mormon Youth, 1869–1890." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/99158.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the feelings of generational anxiety in the Mormon community from 1869 to 1890 and how those feelings intersected with ideas about reading. During this time, older members of the Mormon community in Utah Territory feared how changes in and threats to Mormon society might negatively affect young people's beliefs, abilities, knowledge, and adherence to their parents' religion. Older Mormons recognized a potential ally and enemy in books, newspapers, and other reading materials, which they believed could dramatically shape young people for good or for ill depending on the quality of the material. This thesis argues these older Mormons borrowed many elements from other US literary cultures and repurposed them for distinctly Mormon ends, including achieving theosis (chapter 1), navigating changing dynamics in Mormon families (chapter 2), and building their utopic society, Zion (chapter 3). This research adds to the work of those scholars who have combined the history of Mormonism with book history. It incorporates the voices of everyday Mormons to bring into focus the entire ecosystem of reading for young Mormons by focusing not only on fiction but also on biography, scripture, "Church works," history, and other genres. It examines not only discourse but also institutionalized programs and actions, such as the 1888 MIA Course of Reading (chapter 4), that shaped Mormons' world of reading. Such an examination begins to sharpen our understanding of the relationship of print and religion in America and what reading meant to Mormons.
Master of Arts
The years from 1869 to 1890 constituted a time of change and worry for the Mormon community in Utah Territory. The completion of the transcontinental railroad and the federal government's increasingly vehement attacks on Mormon polygamy, among other factors, led to worries among older Mormons about the future of their community. They particularly worried about the commitment of the upcoming generation of Mormons, who had not converted to the faith but had just been born into it. This thesis examines how those feelings of worry intersected with ideas about reading. Older Mormons recognized a potential ally in reading materials that could help young people become believing, productive members who would help ensure the future of their community. It examines not only the rhetoric surrounding "good" or "bad" reading but also the institutionalized programs and actions, such as the 1888 MIA Course of Reading (chapter 4), that shaped Mormons' world of reading. Such an examination begins to sharpen our understanding of the relationship of print and religion in America and what reading meant to Mormons.

Olmstead, Jacob W. "A Diabolical Disneyland in Zion: the Mormons and the MX." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2005. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/4994.

Full text
Abstract:
In September 1979 President Jimmy Carter publicly announced his decision to support the deployment of the MX missile and mobile basing scheme in Utah and Nevada. Despite local opposition and the close proximity of the proposed base to its headquarters, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) remained silent until 5 May 1981, when the First Presidency issued a statement opposing the MX plans. The purpose of this work is to narrate the history of the development of the Mormon position regarding the deployment of MX missile in the Great Basin and evaluate the response to the statement both locally and nationally. As described in this work the initial deliberations within the Mormon Church were held within the Special Affairs Committee (SAC), which gathered information on the issues concerning the MX. In the process the SAC met with scholars, politicians and religious figures furnished by the grass-roots opposition in Utah. As argued by this thesis it was the arguments presented by both national and local religious figures who convinced the SAC that the MX presented a clear moral concern which required further discussion. Eventually the matter was turned over to the First Presidency and later the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles for further consideration. Because a consensus could not be reached, in the place of clear Mormon opposition the First Presidency issued two general denunciations of the nuclear arms race. Eventually, there was full agreement and a statement was issued on 5 May 1981. As argued in this thesis, it was likely the efforts of Gordon B. Hinckley, a member of the Twelve and chairman of the SAC, who working behind the scene was able to unify the hierarchy, as opposed to Edwin B. Firmage, who has traditionally been credited with convincing the hierarchy to take a position. As illustrated by this thesis the statement evoked a number of responses from the local and national media and religious and political leaders. The response was generally positive; however, there were a number of critical columns and editorials issued by the national media. Moreover, the statement had considerable influence moving Utah's congressional delegation toward opposition. As argued by this thesis this was a moot point because recently elected President Ronald Reagan had latent reservations about the MX program and had been looking for an alternative basing mode prior to the statement's release. In conclusion this thesis argues that, although the statement had little impact on the history of the MX and the Mormon Church, the development of the First Presidency's MX position does provide a case study illustrating the bureaucratic processes within the Church for establishing official political policy in the late-twentieth century.

Ringtails’ footpad prints consistently resulted in a unique pattern recognizable by simple visual analysis and a computer-aided analysis of the prints in a database; however more research is needed for the applicability using field data.

Abstract:
This dissertationis an examinationo f a two-part question. In writings from the Wisdom literature and the Apocalyptic literature, was creation tradition and theology utilized to support Israel's national identity and the ethnic and cultural boundaries which distinguishedh er from the Gentiles? In contrastt o its applicationi n coterminousJ ewish literature, did Paul (in Galatians) draw upon the same creation tradition to redefine the covenantal boundary of Israel to include a people of God made up of both Jew and Gentile? Both nationalistica nd universalistica spectsa re found in the creationt raditionso f the Hebrew Bible. Jewish writers in the pre-Pauline period utilized this creation tradition frequently,a nd in a variety of ways, to emphasizeth e electiono f Israel and underscoret he division between Jew and Gentile. Paul'sr esponseto the Galatianc risis utilized theologicala rgumentsf requently underpinnedb y creationt heologya nd imagery. " The presenceo f the Spirit is full proof of the incorporation of the Galatians into the new creation. Adam Christology becomes the means of uniting Jew and Gentile both in the fallen condition of Adam and in the single solution of faith in Christ. The world ordered by physical descent ("Jew and Gentile") has passed away, there is no "male and female. " Paul used creation imagery and creation theology to prove that the boundary which divided Jew from Gentile as the people of God was no longer valid, the very boundary which Jewish writers, through their use of creation tradition, had attempted to reinforce.

Abstract:

The purpose of this dissertation was to examine the ways in which the media products of the non-profit organization Latinitas revealed ideologies and discourses about identity. The organization purports to empower Latina youth via media education. The media products include two online magazines that feature content for and by the members of the organization. The media products also include a Web site where members of the organization can post and update individual blogs and videos. While not the focus of this dissertation, it is important to note that the organization also hosts various after-school programs and workshops that teach its members about issues related to media education.

The study was managed in two stages. First, a content analysis of the two magazines was conducted to reveal which ideologies were featured in the magazine articles. Literature suggests that the two most relevant identities to Latina girls are gender and ethnicity. As such, special attention was given to ideologies that directed attention to those identities. Second, a discourse analysis of the blogs and videos hosted on the Web site was performed to reveal whether the featured ideologies carried over into the media product of the members of the organization. Results suggested that the magazines focused on issues of gender while mostly ignoring issues of ethnicity. The blogs housed on the Web site reflected the focus on gender but were also the only place where talk of ethnicity was dominant. The videos were generally not used as a means to express identity and were vehicles for displaying the activities of the organization.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
Members of the zinc cluster (or binuclear cluster) protein family are characterized by a Zn(II)Cys6 zinc finger involved in DNA recognition and binding. These fungal proteins are transcriptional regulators of genes involved in a wide variety of cellular processes. One member, Gal4p, is involved in galactose metabolism, while others play a major role in primary and secondary metabolism, control of meiosis, and multidrug resistance. Sequencing of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae genome has revealed that 55 genes encoding putative zinc cluster proteins are present in budding yeast. However, the roles of many of these zinc cluster proteins are unknown. In order to better understand their functions, we have performed a phenotypic analysis of these putative zinc cluster proteins. We have implicated a number of them in a variety of processes in the cell, including multidrug resistance. Stb5p has been shown to be a major player in regulating the expression of multidrug resistance genes. Other zinc cluster activators of multidrug resistance genes include Pdr1p, Pdr3p, and Yrr1p. These regulators of multidrug resistance appear to interact with each other, forming many different sub-populations of homo- and heterodimers. Stb5p is found predominantly as a heterodimer with Pdr1p. It also appears that Pdr1p is a master regulator able to interact with many different partners, enabling it to mediate control over multidrug resistance genes.

Abstract:

The National Park Service’s mission is to preserve and protect cultural heritage sites that have value to the American public. In the summer of 2016, I interned with Zion National Park Cultural Resource Program to conduct archaeological stabilization and preservation of a prehistoric site through public outreach. During my internship, I discovered the program did not adequately address imminent and long term needs to manage cultural resources threatened by human-caused disturbances. The lack of understanding towards prehistoric populations that lived in Zion Canyon and difficulties in past management practices contributed to increasing vulnerability to valued cultural resources. Discontinuous management practices throughout the park’s history led to unknown, vulnerable cultural resources deteriorating due to natural and human-caused disturbances including erosion, vandalism, and neglect. Public archaeology and outreach contributed to a large portion of the project and I developed important procedures to include and train the public who find value in protecting and preserving cultural resources in our National Parks.

In this thesis, I examine cultural resource management practices at Zion National park pertaining to the stabilization and preservation of a prehistoric site and analyze data from the site to provide a more encompassing site history for future researchers and the development of management practices. The review of past management practices and regional prehistoric history will enable me to create better procedures for managing vulnerable cultural resources at Zion National Park. The management procedures will include best practices for initiating public outreach programs in order to include audiences beyond the archaeological community to help preserve and protect cultural heritage at our National Parks.

Abstract:
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS or Mormon) was organised in New York in 1830 and has been in continual operation in Britain since 1837. Problematically, the historiography of British Mormonism has been dominated by mid-nineteenth-century studies, with primary attention given to the movement's early growth and American Apostolic leadership. Although historians have given ample attention to the establishment of Mormonism in Britain, the many themes, events, and participants pertaining to its remarkable perpetuation have been largely overlooked - a gap in the historiography which this thesis seeks to remedy. This thesis explores the endurance and development of British Mormonism within the region where it first took root - Lancashire and the English North West. By design, it spans the dates 1837-1998: the period of time in which the Latter-day Saint perspective of and commitment to the North West underwent a complete ideological revolution, initiated by Church leadership in Salt Lake City, which both ensured Mormonism's institutional maturation in Lancashire and impacted profoundly the lives and religious practises of its missionaries and regional membership. Through examination of primary sources retained at the LDS Church Archives and Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah, this thesis asserts that Mormonism's successful endurance in the North West is a function of its own doctrinally-driven perspectives and programmes. It argues in favour of the primacy of Mormon doctrine within and upon British Mormon history, and identifies doctrinal adaptation as a key endogenous influence which has assured Mormonism's survival in a region renowned for its variegated and competitive religiosity. The thesis focuses specifically on Mormonism's departure from its nineteenth-century millenarian outlook and concomitant emphasis on emigration, and examines the resultant changes and consequences manifest in the lives of its converts, the efforts of its missionaries, and the dynamics of its regional congregations.

Abstract:

This report deals with providing tracking to an outdoor mobile augmented reality system and the Zion Augmented Reality Application. ZionARA is meant to display a virtual recreation of a 13th century castle on the site it once stood through an augmented reality Head Mounted Display. Mobile outdoor augmented/mixed reality puts special demands on what kind of equipment is practical. After briefly evaluating the different existing tracking methods, a solution based on GPS and an augmented inertial rotation tracker is further evaluated by trying them out in a real setting. While standard unaugmented GNSS trackers are unable to provide the level of accuracy necessary, a differential GPS receiver is found to be capable of delivering good enough coordinates. The final result is a new version of ZionARA that actually allows a person to walk around at the site of the castle and see the castle as it most likely once stood. Source code and data files for ZionARA are provided on a supplemental disc.
