Abstract:
Zinc is an essential mineral involved in gene expression, cell growth and division, neurotransmission, and reproductive and immune functions. It is crucial for periods of growth, including pregnancy and lactation, infancy, childhood, and adolescence. Daily requirements in pregnancy increase by ~40, so adequate zinc stores should be ensured prior to pregnancy so that the high requirements of the developing fetus can be met. Inadequate zinc intake often accompanies general protein/calorie malnourishment but is also seen in individuals consuming poor quality diets. Diets low in animal protein and/or high in phytates (e.g. in whole grains) provide limited amounts of bioavailable zinc. Prenatal vitamins containing zinc are advisable with such diets. Zinc is required for male fertility, and supplementation may improve fertility in subfertile men.

Abstract:
This chapter explains how Empire Zinc acted out of fear that a successful strike might enhance the Mexican American unity already encouraged by the policies Jencks had encouraged Local 890 to adopt. The genius of democratic unionism was the empowerment of local union members and their community, which encouraged an immediate and vigorous response to the company's refusal to negotiate. Once the strike began, local committees were created with responsibility for various functions, including relief, negotiations, publicity, police relations, and fund-raising. As the community mobilized, it became clear that the great union advantage was to be its human resources, organizational capacities, and wide-ranging ability to employ external support in both the union family and the Mexican American community.

Abstract:
Neurodegenerative disorders including Alzheimer’s (AD), Parkinson’s disease (PD), Huntington’s disease (HD), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) are progressive diseases of the aging population with currently few therapeutic options. While aggregation and deposition of disease-specific proteins link the pathologies of these diseases, targeting these aggregating proteins with therapeutics has not yet been successful in clinical trial. This chapter profiles metals (copper, zinc, and iron) as alternative drug targets for neurodegeneration. Complex changes to metals occur in these neurodegenerative diseases. Accumulating evidences have demonstrated that perturbations to metal homeostasis contribute to the progression of neuronal dysfunction and death. Importantly, several phase II trials have shown that correcting metal dyshomeostasis improves clinical outcomes; the chapter argues that it is now time to explore the therapeutic utility of metal-based drugs in larger, phase III trials.

Abstract:
This chapter looks at the poetry of Souvankham Thammavongsa to understand the figure of the Asian refugee as a metaphor for the inhuman within human rights discourses. Her first two books, Small Arguments (2003) and Found (2007), offer mediations on the mechanisms of power that threaten to render certain lives lost and forgotten. The chapter then turns to her work in big boots, a now defunct Toronto-based zine united by feminist and racialized concerns. By recording the experiences and creative outputs of this minor public in print, this zine legitimates marginalized lives and interrogates the structures that constantly threaten them with erasure. Ultimately, these texts investigate how the legitimating capabilities of print are necessary in order for a logic of exception to be exercised and human rights discourses to operate.

Abstract:
Copper is an essential trace mineral with a central role in oxidation#amp;#x2013;reduction reactions. It is involved in connective tissue formation and disulphide bonding of keratin. Clinical deficiency for copper is uncommon but has been increasing in prevalence, resulting from malnutrition or lack of trace metals in the food source, even in Western diets. Secondary copper deficiency can be induced by excess intake of zinc or iron and is sometimes seen in individuals taking supplements of these minerals. Copper requirements are increased in pregnancy, and suboptimal supply may have adverse effects on developing tissues and organ systems including the lung, skin, bones, and immune system. Despite the increased need, supplementation is generally not recommended in pregnancy. An increased intake of foods high in copper, such as nuts, and a proportionate lowering of low-copper foods (e.g. fats/oils) may be advisable in women with potentially marginal copper status.

Abstract:
This article discusses the structural, electronic, magnetic, and transport properties of carbon-fullerene-based polymers. In particular, it examines the defect-induced ferromagnetism of the C60-based polymers and its analog in the case of non-traditional inorganic materials. It first reviews the computational methods currently used in the literature, highlighting the pros and cons of each one of them. It then considers the defects associated with the ferromagnetism of the C60-based polymers, namely carbon vacancies, the 2 + 2 cycloaddition bonds and impurity atoms, and their effect on the electronic structure. It also evaluates the effect of codoping and goes on to describe the electronic, magnetic and transport properties of the rhombohedral C60-polymer. Finally, it looks at the origin of magnetic coupling among the magnetic moments in the rhombohedral C60-polymer and provides further evidence for the analogy between the magnetism of the rhombohedral C60-polymer and zinc oxide.

Abstract:
We examine the effect of pandemics on selected commodity prices—in particular, those of zinc, copper, lead, and oil. We set up a vector autoregressive model and analyse data since the mid-nineteenth century to determine how prices reacted to pandemics such as the 1918 Spanish Flu, 1957 Asian Flu, and 1968 Hong Kong Flu. We control for demand and supply fundamentals to generate forecasts from the point of outbreak, and we consider whether any pattern can be deduced in reactions to adverse global shocks. Results are varied, depending on choice of commodity and magnitude and type of response. No clear conclusions are possible from past pandemics, and we conclude that at the time of writing, forecasts are difficult to make in the ongoing current pandemic too. We conclude by estimating impulse response functions to assess likely impact and the subsequent response of commodity prices to the shock.

Various models proposed to explain the equity premium or risk‐free rate puzzle are explained: external habits (Abel’s “catching up with the Joneses” model and the Campbell‐Cochrane model), rare disasters, Epstein‐Zin‐Weil utility, long run risks, and idiosyncratic uninsurable labor income risk. External habits allow the SDF to be variable without requiring high variability of consumption. The SDF for a representative investor with Epstein‐Zin‐Weil utility depends on consumption and the market return. It is most useful when the world is not IID, as in the long‐run risks model. With uninsurable labor income risk, there is no representative investor even if investors all have the same CRRA utility, and there is additional exibility to explain asset returns.

Marlene Streeruwitz is one of the most important authors in the German language, and her dramas already belong to the canon of contemporary literature. In 2021, she was the first Joseph Breitbach Poetics Lecturer in Koblenz, the honour being awarded in particular for her dramatic work. This volume brings together contributions on her dramas, ranging from the author's own poetological statements (in two conversations with the director of the Koblenz Theatre) to essays by literary scholars on central aspects of interpretation to a dramolet that collages texts by her and makes them productive for theatre in a new, practical way. With contributions by Marlene Streeruwitz, Lena Becker, Karen Bo, Elena Panzeter, Franziska Zinn, Yann Breunig, Markus Dietze, Alexander Draxl, Nishant K. Abstract:
In his highly influential book Wherever You Go, There You Are (1995) Jon Kabat-Zinn suggests a particular kind of person revealed through mindfulness: a “you” to be found wherever you go. But who are “you”? Based on long-term anthropological fieldwork in northern Thailand, this chapter demonstrates that for many people there is no “you” exposed through Buddhist mindfulness practices, but instead local articulations of ideas about anattā, or non-self. “Spirits” of the person, called khwan, are also implicated: khwan are thought to be vulnerable to dispersal due to a lack of mindfulness, resulting in possible mental disorder. Through an analysis of the multiple constructions of the person in Thailand, the chapter argues that the “you” revealed in mindfulness has less to do with what is scientifically or even religiously real, and more to do with the authority of culturally constructed claims about what that “you” looks like, wherever you go.

Abstract:
We veiled women used to be nothing. We were treated worse than dogs. Finally I am starting to feel normal again. I can breathe.Houda from Tunis, October 2011This book seeks to understand the evolution of Tunisia’s Islamist Ennahda (Renaissance) movement from a beginning in the 1960s as a diffuse socio-cultural trend into one of the country’s most influential political actors, even claiming a regional leadership role. It is the first comprehensive study of the Tunisian Islamists, as it was previously impossible to conduct thorough research into their organisation, which was banned until popular uprisings in 2010–11 forced long-time dictator Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali out of power and replaced his regime with a nascent democracy. After decades of repression many devout Muslims like Houda, quoted above, experienced for the first time a space of freedom. In a period of rapid transformation in which Tunisians are exploring their newly gained rights, understanding the stance of the Islamists is of utmost importance....

Full text
Abstract:
This book presents an important breakthrough in arithmetic geometry. In 2014, this book's author delivered a series of lectures at the University of California, Berkeley, on new ideas in the theory of p-adic geometry. Building on his discovery of perfectoid spaces, the author introduced the concept of “diamonds,” which are to perfectoid spaces what algebraic spaces are to schemes. The introduction of diamonds, along with the development of a mixed-characteristic shtuka, set the stage for a critical advance in the discipline. This book shows that the moduli space of mixed-characteristic shtukas is a diamond, raising the possibility of using the cohomology of such spaces to attack the Langlands conjectures for a reductive group over a p-adic field. The book follows the informal style of the original Berkeley lectures, with one chapter per lecture. It explores p-adic and perfectoid spaces before laying out the newer theory of shtukas and their moduli spaces. Points of contact with other threads of the subject, including p-divisible groups, p-adic Hodge theory, and Rapoport-Zink spaces, are thoroughly explained.

Abstract:
The employment and work of the future is taking place in service provider systems, which are a result of the digital revolution. Nevertheless, politics, science and research have insufficiently considered the consequences of the digital revolution for the organisation of work in the field of service provision. Using the example of logistics, this book presents the social economy, knowledge services, and the consequences and design options for work and employment at the levels of ‘society’, ‘services, markets and the economy’, ‘service development’, ‘service production’ and ‘model development’ from different technical perspectives. The essay ‘Services are becoming high-tech’, written by twenty academics, outlines a design concept for top-class service research, which can serve as a trailblazer for international competitiveness, high customer value and good work in the digital revolution.
