Mann, Peter. Lagrangian Field Theory. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198822370.003.0025.

Full text
Abstract:
In this chapter, Hamiltonian field theory is derived classically via a Hamiltonian density, using the zeroth component of a 4-momentum density. In field theory, space and time are considered to be on equal footing but, in the canonical formalism, time is treated as being special and therefore, by definition, it is not covariant. Consequently, most field theoretic models are built on Lagrangian formulations. A covariant canonical formalism is the subject of the de Donder–Weyl formalism, which is briefly discussed as a covariant Hamiltonian field theory. In addition, the chapter examines the case of a generalised Poisson bracket in the continuous form for two local smooth functionals of phase space.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter shows how simple world lines of zero length can describe an undulatory aspect of light—namely, its frequency. It first encodes the information about the frequency of a monochromatic light wave in the zeroth component of its wave vector. An alternative method of taking into account the wave nature of light is based on the fact that the emission of successive light corpuscles by the source also defines the period of a light signal. To illustrate, the chapter provides the example of a light source and a receiver moving along the X axis of a frame S. Finally, this chapter illustrates the idea of a particle horizon as well as the limits of validity of the spectral shift formulas introduced in the chapter by the example of two objects which exchange light signals.

Rau, Jochen. Thermodynamic Limit. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199595068.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
When one describes systems which are homogeneous, stable, and macroscopic in size, it no longer matters whether macroscopic data are given as sharp constraints or as expectation values. This is the thermodynamic limit. The behaviour of matter in this limit is governed by four laws, pertaining respectively to the properties of equilibrium (zeroth law), energy (first law), entropy (second law), and the ground state (third law). This chapter provides the mathematical criteria for homogeneity and stability and explores their respective consequences. In particular, it discusses the distinction between extensive and intensive variables, as well as the Gibbs–Duhem relation. It introduces the three thermodynamic ensembles—microcanonical, canonical, and grand canonical—and shows their equivalence in the thermodynamic limit. Finally, this chapter shows how, in the thermodynamic limit, the four laws of thermodynamics arise naturally within the statistical framework.
