Abstract:
We analyze models that combine precautionary saving and liquidity constraints to provide a unified, more realistic treatment of intertemporal decisions. We start off with a simple three-period model to illustrate how the expectation of future borrowing constraints can induce precautionary saving even in scenarios in which marginal utility is linear. A more general model that allows liquidity constraints and precautionary saving to interact fully is the buffer stock model, of which there are two versions. One, developed by Deaton (1991), emphasizes the possibility that a prudent and impatient consumer may face credit constraints. The other, by Carroll (1997), features the same type of consumer but allows for the possibility of income falling to zero and so generating a natural borrowing constraint.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter introduces embedded models. This is a special case of a parametric model which cannot be obtained simply by setting the parameters to particular values in a simple way. An example is the regression function y = b[1−exp(−ax)], which is always curved when a and b have fixed values. But letting a tend to zero and b tend to infinity simultaneously, whilst keeping ab = c fixed, yields y = cx, a straight-line special case. When this is the true model, fitting the original two-parameter model leads to very unstable and individually meaningless estimates of a and b. Such embedded models are actually very common in the literature, leading to confusion in interpretation of results when undetected. In this chapter, embeddedness is defined and a large number of regression embedded model examples given. Detection and removal of embeddedness by reparametrization is discussed. Two real data numerical examples are given.

Full text
Abstract:
Zero Waste Fashion Design combines practical examples, flat patterns and more than 20 exercises to help you incorporate this sustainable technique into your portfolio. There are also beautifully illustrated interviews with innovative designers, including Richard Lindgvist, Mary Beth Bentaha and Daniel Desanto to show how sustainable practice continues to evolve within industry. Industry pioneers, Timo Rissanen and Holly McQuillan, offer flexible strategies and easy-to-master zero waste techniques to help you develop your own cutting-edge fashion designs. This updated edition includes new content on integrating 3D design into a zero waste process, additional coverage of the historical context of zero waste around the world, and expands on the related technique of subtraction cutting to make this the ultimate practical guide to sustainable fashion design.

Abstract:
Becoming Human: Matter and Meaning in an Antiblack World demonstrates that the history of racialized gender and maternity, specifically antiblackness, is indispensable to future thought on matter, materiality, animality, and posthumanism. Rather than applying a pre-given philosophical framework to literature and visual culture, Becoming Human provides a model for reading African diasporic literature and visual art for the philosophical premises, interventions, and implications of these forms and traditions. Becoming Human argues that African diasporic cultural production does not coalesce into a unified tradition that merely seeks inclusion into the dominant conception of “the human” but, rather, frequently alters the meaning and significance of being (human) and engages in imaginative practices of worlding from the perspective of a history of blackness’s bestialization and thingification: the process of imagining a black person as an empty vessel, a nonbeing, a nothing, an ontological zero, coupled with the violent imposition of colonial myths and racial hierarchy. In complementary but highly distinct ways, the literary and visual texts in Becoming Human articulate being (human) in a manner that neither relies on animal denigration nor reestablishes liberal humanism as the authority on being (human). What emerges from this questioning is a radically unruly sense of being/knowing/feeling existence, one that necessarily ruptures the foundations of the current hegemonic mode of “the human.”

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter uses an example to demonstrate the steps of specifying, calibrating, solving, and simulating a macroeconomic model in order to evaluate alternative policies for reducing domestic public debt. It extends the simple closed-economy New Keynesian model by incorporating the zero lower bound and asymmetric wage adjustment (in which wages are much more rigid in the downward direction). We examine the dynamics of adjustment, given a sharp increase in government debt due to a once-only big increase in spending. We find that selective tax-rate rules, incorporating a degree of tax relief in a period of fiscal consolidation, are effective instruments for rapidly reducing the overhang of a large stock of public debt.

Guhr, Thomas. Replica approach in random matrix theory. Edited by Gernot Akemann, Jinho Baik, and Philippe Di Francesco. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198744191.013.8.

Full text
Abstract:
This article examines the replica method in random matrix theory (RMT), with particular emphasis on recently discovered integrability of zero-dimensional replica field theories. It first provides an overview of both fermionic and bosonic versions of the replica limit, along with its trickery, before discussing early heuristic treatments of zero-dimensional replica field theories, with the goal of advocating an exact approach to replicas. The latter is presented in two elaborations: by viewing the β = 2 replica partition function as the Toda lattice and by embedding the replica partition function into a more general theory of τ functions. The density of eigenvalues in the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE) and the saddle point approach to replica field theories are also considered. The article concludes by describing an integrable theory of replicas that offers an alternative way of treating replica partition functions.
