Abstract:
AbstractStudy Objectives:To provide a descriptive analysis of the prehospital emergency medical transportation system operating in and around a major Bosnian city, and to discuss the effect of the war on that transportation system.Design:A prospective, consecutive sample study.Setting:The largest tertiary-care referral hospital currently operating in central Bosnia.Participants:158 consecutive patients who sought care in the trauma and medical receiving rooms at Zenica Hospital.Method and Measurements:Patients were surveyed as to time of transportation to the site of first medical care and to Zenica Hospital, and modes of transportation used. Results:Time to transport to first care within the city of Zenica is 30±21 minutes. Time to transport to Zenica Hospital from within Zenica is 51±39 minutes. Time to transport to first care outside of Zenica is 77±56 minutes. Time to transport to Zenica Hospital from outside the city of Zenica is 178±94 minutes. The prehospital emergency medical service was used in 11.7% of cases reviewed. Conclusion:The majority of patients with major injury and illness are unable to obtain prehospital transportation and medical care through informal modes of transportation. The existing prehospital emergency medical services system is inadequate for the numbers of patients requiring such services, and transportation time from outside the city of study is especially prolonged.

Abstract:
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), air pollution is the largest single environmental risk to public health. According to the latest estimate of this organization, 9 out of 10 people on the planet breathe polluted air. The development of industry in the relatively small Zenica valley reflected on air quality in the city of Zenica. The problem of high air pollution due to emissions of pollutants from industrial sources, traffic, and individual furnaces, burning of environmentally unsuitable fuels containing high sulfur and ash content has been present in the City of Zenica for a long time. In addition, the low wind speed during the year, which ranges up to 1.5 m/s, with unfavorable temperature inversions, causes the concentrations of pollutants in the air to reach alarmingly high values in a short period. In the wider area of the City of Zenica, air quality has been monitored since 1978 in the network of stationary stations. The paper presents results of air quality monitoring which are analyzed at the Institute Kemal Kapetanovic in Zenica for the sampling period from 01.01.2019. to 31.12.2020. years. Air quality monitoring included sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), and particulate matter (PM10) at three locations in the wider area of the city of Zenica. In the wider area of the City of Zenica, air quality has been monitored since 1978 in the network of stationary stations. The paper presents the processed results of air quality monitoring which are analyzed at the Institute Kemal Kapetanovic in Zenica for the sampling period from 01.01.2019 to 31.12.2020. The measured concentrations of pollutants in the ambient air indicate that during the heating season, i.e. the winter months, the air quality in the urban and suburban areas of the city of Zenica is very poor. The data show that the highest hourly concentration of sulfur dioxide was recorded in December at the measuring station AMS Tetovo in the amount of 1100.59 µg/m3, which is located in the settlement next to the metallurgical facilities of the industrial zone Zenica.

Abstract:
The city of Zenica belongs to one of the most important industrial centers in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Due to the presence of industrial plants, especially metallurgical plants, but also due to a large number of small home fireplaces and the geographical location, air pollution in the Zenica valley is very high. Through continuous and dedicated air quality measurement, excessive air pollution was determined in the urban area of Zenica, i.e. limit values for total sediment dust were exceeded in some parts of the Zenica valley. The paper provides an analysis of the results of monitoring the total sediment dust and the content of heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, zinc, and iron in the total sediment dust for the period 2019-2021to determine the environmental burden and the average annual and maximum monthly trends of the total sediment dust in the Zenica valley. The analysis shows that emissions originating from industrial sources significantly burden the environment with sediment dust, especially in the zone up to about 3.5 km from the sources located in the industrial zone of the Zenica valley.

Abstract:
The paper present results of the investigations on the prehistoric sites in the vicinity of the city of Zenica conducted during 2018 and 2019. Based on the cooperation between the Austrian Archaeological Institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and City Museum of Zenica we applied geophysical prospection, air-borne laser scanning and excavations in order to get a better understanding of the Bronze and Iron Age developments in this specific part of the central Bosnia along the Bosna River. This research is emebeded within the project “Visualizing the unknown Balkans, supported by the Innovation Fond of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.Apart from previously known and to smaller extent excavated hillfort Kopilo, our work also focused on the sites situated on the ridge above Gradišće in the northern part of the Zenica Basin. What appears to be indicative of this micro-region are high attitudes (600-900 m a.s.l.) of the identified Bronze and Iron Ages settlements in comparison to the situation in the neighboring valleys and basins of the central Bosnia. Such position provided mutual visual contact between the sites and an excellent control of the entry and exit from the Zenica Basin. Our work also brought evidences of prehistoric stone mounds on the ridge above Gradišče. The numerous archeological finds indicatate the importance and a long continuity of the hillforts such as Kopilo that obviuolsy lasted unti the advanced La Téne Period.

Abstract:
This article explores a recent successful threat of industrial action at the ArcelorMittal steel plant at Zenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Building in interviews with trade unions leaders, the author locates the campaign against the background of the economic, political and social situation in the country as well as the difficulties these impose on effective trade union organisation which, with certain exceptions, exists at a low level particularly in the private sector. Other aspects also make trade unions unattractive, not least to young people. Consequently, examples of industrial action which are successful are not only are of practical assistance in raising the wages of the workers involved, they also provide powerful examples of the continuing logic of collective action and, thus, a strong motivation to seek out trade union membership. Furthermore, in a country beset by the political problems that Bosnia and Herzegovina has, examples of strike action - of workers simply getting on with their everyday normal lives - also act to reassert what is most important by documenting citizens in their lives as workers not as ethnicities.

Abstract:
Concentration of Lead, Cadmium, and Iron in Sediment Dust and Total Suspended Particles Before and After Initialisation of Integral Production in Iron and Steel Work Plant ZenicaPoor air quality is a common fact for all areas with base industry. The city of Zenica was once the metallurgical centre of Ex-Yugoslavia and is therefore highly polluted at present. Air pollution peaked in 1987 when average concentration of pollutants was extremely high (daily average concentration of SO2 was 1800 μg m-3). With the beginning of the war in 1992, integral production in the steel work plant was shut down, to be re-launched in 2008. Limit values for iron do not exist, but iron has been monitored in Zenica for the past 28 years because of the presence of steel works. Concentrations of cadmium and lead have also been measured because they are very much present in polluted areas with steel works. The concentration of mentioned elements in air deposit and total suspended particles before and after integral production in the steel work plant was re-launched is the subject of this paper. Total suspended particles were measured in two locations using German standard VDI 2463 Blatt 4. Sediment dust was measured in nine locations using Bergerhoff method. The concentration of iron, lead, and cadmium was performed in the chemical laboratory of the Metallurgical Institute "Kemal Kapetanović" Zenica using standard methods. Higher concentrations of these parameters during the period of integral production clearly point to the impact of steel works on Zenica valley.

During the execution of works on the construction of the tunnel Zenica, there is a certain number of activities that can cause negative consequences for the environment. In this regard, the greatest danger is represented by the technological operations of works such as: mechanical excavation, blasting, deep excavations, destruction, and removal of the natural covering layer. Also, construction machines pose a potential danger from spills or accidental spills of oil and oil derivatives, discarding of motor oils and similar waste. Uncontrolled depositing of excavated material, and a plateau for parking machinery near surface and underground water can cause negative consequences for the environment. In this paper, an assessment of the primary environmental pollutants during the excavation of the tunnel Zenica was carried out, i.e., dust and wastewater emissions during construction.

Abstract:
A bathtub rises slowly, as pushed by the Mother Earth’s breath, from the bowels of a metallic hill near Zenica, in central Bosnia. A cargo of freshly extracted steaming coal is ready to be sieved, stowed in 50 kg bags, and loaded into an old Yugoslav army truck by the miners working outside. Here, from the depths of the earth where hundreds of Bosnian illegal miners find work, a thriving parallel coal trade is born, in order to feed stoves, boilers and kitchens for thousands of families across the country. This occurs in the total absence of contracts, any kind of safety regulations, insurance protections or guarantees for the workers. During the Tito period, this city was considered a «miniature Yugoslavia», a true model of real socialism, driven by both its steel mill (Željezara Zenica) and the metallurgical-mining industries (which employed more than 50,000 workers). Until the beginning of the nineties, the economic and socio-cultural environment was enhanced by the pervasive sense of sigurnost (security) and the confidence in the future, released by a work paradigm based on Samoupravljanje (Self-management). This was focused on the man-worker, an authentic symbol of progress and improvement of living and working conditions, which took place in the second post-war period. The dissolution of Yugoslavia and the consequent war led to the collapse of this life-system, known by the inhabitants of Zenica for 50 years. The steel mill and State mines workers were all expelled from the labor market without valid alternatives in terms of employment. They were also penalized by an economic context based on a single, great and bright direction: the “heavy” industry, fundamental and everlasting point of reference for thousands of workers and citizens. Considering the deep changes occurred in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the last few decades: how the lives of the Zenica (the "Incandescent City") inhabitants have been set up again from a working and social point of views? I tried to approach this question by analyzing the condition of the underground economy. During the last postwar period and throughout the structural adjustment plans in a neoliberal view (for example, the opening to the free market, privatization of social property, financial deregulation, de-unionization of companies), this hidden economy has gained a leading role in the entire Bosnian economic-productive landscape (Divjak & Pugh, 2013). Considering the ethnography and my experience working with the illegal miners in Zenica, I wanted to investigate the situation of the labor market (in particular illegal coal mining) and the related issues, such as unemployment, emigration, rights of workers, corruption, exploitation, gender, conflicts, cooperative methods and illegal production processes in this particular post-industrial, post-war and post-socialist context. The illegal "private" extraction of Bosnian black gold, together with my interest in issues like the complex and diverse economic-social and political-cultural framework of the Country, led me to the specific studies of the Artisanal and Small Scale Mining (ASM), from which the theoretical framework of this thesis is based. As the first European study project on ASM, this work does not have a literature background to rely on, therefore the theoretical framework will be inspired by different sources, without claiming to be exhaustive. My aim (and hope) is to contribute to the academic debate. Through ethnography, I am trying to explain the complexity of the new social and economic relationships connected to the changed life meanings in which the artisanal miners of Zenica are working now. Also, I want to present the future possibilities for the large world of illegal work, deeply linked to political and economic choices, not only local but especially the federal, national and global ones.

Abstract: The study of cosmic radiation is of utmost importance to astrophysics. Particles from different locations, from inside the solar system, and outside it, constantly arrive on Earth, carrying a lot of information about its origin. When these particles arrives to Earth¿s atmosphere they initiate a cascade of secondary particles resulting from the interaction of the primary cosmic ray with the atmosphere. From this rain of secondary particles, muons are the most abundant charged particles that reach the Earth¿s surface.Muons are highly penetrating, which can be a very big problem in some experiments, even if underground, of other particles. Because of their large number, they become extremely necessary in reconstructions of air showers to obtain information about the primary particle. Having knowledge of its characteristics, such as flux and distribution, noise in some experiments can be treated and other studies can be optimized.Muon intensity in the Earth¿s surface is well known to be anisotropic and has dependence on the zenith angle of ? (?) = ?0 cosn(?). For simplicity in the calculations, this n exponent is often used with a value of 2, but studies show that this parameter has dependence on the geographical position and on the energy range of muons in question. This dissertation proposes a simple method for accurate determination of the exponent n and muon vertical intensity simultaneously, that can be determined quickly in any laboratory cosmic rays using a particle detector, which was called Muon Telescope. As a result of the application of the method on the Leptons Laboratory, in Campinas - SP - Brazil, the value for n that was obtained is about 2.30 and a value for the vertical intensity of muons around 146.40? z/m2sr. This data is very satisfactory and according to similar experiments previously conducted at the Laboratory. This method was applied on Fermilab, located at the United States. On this new geographical location, the results were different from that obtained at Campinas, with n about 3.66 and the vertical intensity around 158.33 ? zm-2sr-1.The same experiment with the telescope will be held in other geographical locations in order to check the n exponent behavior and the muon intensity at different locations

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the identity, competences and professional development of corporate librarians. I have done an empirical study based on semi structured interviews with 11 information professionals who were working at Astra Zeneca at the time of the re-organizations of the company in 2009 which ultimately led to the closing of the libraries. I have also examined the views on competences and professional development of librarians in general, both in Sweden and in Denmark. I have used Thomas Brante’s theories on profession types as well as Anders Ørom’s theories on librarian identities as my theoretical framework. The study finds that the respondents have a strong sense of identity as librarians. The interviews revealed that corporate librarians can be considered as having higher status compared to other librarians and that it is primarily based on the fact that the compensation is better in the private sector. The interviews also revealed that being service minded, thorough, social as well as of a curious disposition are regarded as key skills among librarians. The study finally concludes that teaching is an important part of the librarian identity and that Ørom’s model in general proved inadequate when applied to corporate information professionals.

Abstract:
Abstract:
This paper gives an overview of the excavation of rock mass in the Zenica tunnel on the highway of Corridor Vc. The technology of tunnel construction includes the following underground works: tunnel excavation, substructure works (primary support) and construction of the secondary lining of the tunnel. The most important feature for the selection of construction technology is the geology of the rock mass through which the tunnel passes. The combined excavation technology was applied at the Zenica tunnel: by machine and blasting ("drill and blast technique") and based on NATM - New Austrian Tunnel Method. The excavation of the Zenica tunnel was performed in very complex geological and geotechnical conditions. Since these are flysch sediments, tectonics was very pronounced with constant shifts of hard and soft rocks and large amounts of groundwater. The excavation of the tunnel was performed in several phases and in full profile, depending on the quality of the rock mass, while ensuring the excavation with a primary support. Engineering geological mapping of the rock mass of the excavation face was performed daily. Geomechanical classification - RMR was applied for the classification of rock mass. The excavation of the Zenica tunnel was performed in the rock mass of III, IV and V categories according to RMR.

In 2021 28th International Conference on Nuclear Engineering. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/icone28-63444.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Cosmic muons are highly energetic and penetrative particles and these figures are used for imaging of large and dense objects such as spent nuclear fuels in casks and special nuclear materials in cargo. Cosmic muon intensity depends on the incident angle (zenith angle, φ), and it is known that I(φ) = I0 cos2 φ at sea level. Low intensity of cosmic muon requires long measurement time to acquire statistically meaningful counts. Therefore, high-energy particle simulations e.g., GEANT4, are often used to guide measurement studies. However, the measurable cosmic muon count rate changes upon detector geometry and configuration. Here we develop an “effective solid angle” model to estimate experimental results more accurately than the simple cosine-squared model. We show that the cosine-squared model has large error at high zenith angles (φ ≥ 60°), whereas our model provides improved estimations at all zenith angles. We anticipate our model will enhance the ability to estimate actual measurable cosmic muon count rates in muon imaging applications by reducing the gap between simulation and measurement results. This will increase the value of modeling results and improve the quality of experiments and applications in muon detection and imaging.
