Abstract:
This chapter discusses urban developments in two major cities in Serbia, Belgrade and Novi Sad, influenced by the Balkan political crisis of the 1990s. Belgrade is the national capital of Serbia, with a dominantly Serbian population. Novi Sad is the capital of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, and home to a population of more than 20 different ethnicities. The seemingly bipolar relationship between these two cities started to emerge during the fall of Yugoslavia and has intensified during the subsequent shrinkage of the country into the current state of Serbia. The effects of war as well as migration have left their mark on the urban situation of both cities. Both cities are not old by European standards, Belgrade emerging before the rise of the Ottoman Empire and Novi Sad being a product of the eighteenth century and the rise of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. These two cities traditionally vary in size and ethnic make up from almost mono-ethnic Belgrade to multi-ethnic Novi Sad. This paper will explore the idea that national capitals such as Belgrade can give rise to “un-national capitals” such as Novi Sad. This will be viewed through a lens of the role of architecture and design in affecting the realities of both cities.

Abstract:
This analysis is based on the human heat balance according to the bioclimatic man-environment heat exchange model created by Krzysztof B?a?ejczyk. The final result of the human heat balance model points to biothermal weather situations for the outdoor recreational needs. In this analysis, middles daily meteorological data (of climatological station of Novi Sad) were used for two extreme months, January and July. In this work, it is analyzed two periods, the first is for 1992-2010. and the second is for year 2010. The aim is to show how weather can be evaluated for recreational needs which the health resource of Novi Sad and to point out the shortcomings when it comes to multi-year analysis. The objective of this article has been to present a bioclimatic analysis of city Novi Sad and how weather variables come together in order to give a climate meaning on human organism.

Abstract:
Urban parks are vital components of city ecosystems, enhancing biodiversity, climate resilience, air and water quality, health, socialization, and economic benefits for citizens in urban areas. This paper examines urban parks in Novi Sad by gathering opinions on their qualities and functions through a questionnaire. The respondents were students enrolled in the landscape architecture course at the University of Novi Sad. To analyze their responses, multivariate statistical analysis techniques, including ANOVA, MANOVA, and contingency tables, were applied. The results highlight the primary reasons for visiting urban parks in general, as well as specific parks in Novi Sad. The paper offers insights into visitor behavior, including the frequency and length of their stays, etc., and provides an assessment of the parks’ educational functions, which were expected to be highly relevant for the respondent group. The results can be relevant for further urban park development and serve as a starting point for applying multi-criteria (MC) analysis. Specifically, the results can be used to define a set of criteria, goals, and other essential elements necessary for conducting Analytic Hierarchy Processes or similar MC analysis methods.

Abstract:
Background/Aim. Hypertension is one of the leading causes of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality and more than a half of all health insurance expenditures for reimbursed medicines are allocated to antihypertensive drugs in Serbia. The aim of this study was to identify the antihypertensive drug utilization patterns among hypertensive outpatients in the city of Novi Sad, Serbia, determine the adherence to clinical guidelines and address the economic aspects of current prescribing practices. Methods. This retrospective observational study was conducted in Novi Sad over a period of six months. The data on the number of packages, size of packages, and retail price of antihypertensives issued on prescription in outpatients with the diagnosis of essential arterial hypertension was collected from all state-owned pharmacies in Novi Sad. Drug consumption was analyzed using the Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical (ATC)/defined daily dose (DDD) methodology. Results. Total consumption of antihypertensives issued on prescription over 6 month period in the city of Novi sad, Serbia was 283,48 DDD per 1,000 inhabitans per day (DID). Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEi) were most commonly prescribed drugs, and were used 3 times more often than calcium channel blockers and 5 times more than betablockers. The consumption of diuretics and angiotensin receptor antagonists was low within all groups of outpatients. Both national and international guidelines state superiority and effectiveness of diuretics in treatment of hypertension in the elderly, but their consumption was unreasonable low despite the fact that over 70% of all antihypertensive drugs in the city of Novi Sad were dispensed in people aged > 60. The use of more expensive ACEi was observed, despite the guidelines deeming all the drugs of these class equally effective in treatment of hypertension. Conclusion. Large differences in utilization of different groups of antihypertensive agents were noted in this study. Underutilization of valuable, efficacious, and cost-effective thiazide diuretics and over use of expensive ACE inhibitors is unjustifiable. There is a potential for large savings with switching to low-price ACEi, modeling the practice of Scandinavian countries.

Abstract:
The beginning of the new millennium provokes governments and researchers to recognize the importance and the effect that Particulate Matter (PM) has on the whole environment. PM has been marked as one of the key ambient air pollutants, due to its high sorption ability. World Health Organization indicated PM present in ambient air as pollutant with adverse, acute and hazard effect on human health and built environment. The city of Novi Sad, Serbia is rapidly expanding, redefining architectural, urban and environmental matrices. Architectural spatial transformations - construction sites need to be considered as temporal unique pollution hot spots. Trend of active construction sites increasing number in Novi Sad affects the ambient air quality. Goal of the research is to emphasize PM pollution problem on the construction sites in Novi Sad and to illustrate and display the trends in mitigation measures application during 4-year period (2019-2022).

Abstract:
Ispitano je prisustvo toksičnih cijanobakterija u različitim ekosistemima sa teritorije Republike Srbije i analizirane su negativne posledice koje mogu da prouzrokuju ovi mikroorganizmi. Formirana je Baza podataka cijanobakterija u Srbiji koja prilaže veliki broj bitnih  i korisnih informacija iz preko 70 literaturnih izvora o prostiranju i učestalosti pojave cijanobakterija i njihovih toksina u periodu od 130 godina, kao i njihovih efekata na živi svet u vodenim ekosistemima, ali i šire. Istraživana su 64 vodena ekosistema, uključujući reke, jezera, bare, kanale, ribnjake, akumulacije za navodnjavanje, akumulacije za snabdevanje vodom za piće i akumulacije sa drugom namenom, gde je najčešće cvetalo pet vrsta cijanobakterija i to:  Microcystis aeruginosa,  Aphanizomenon flos-aquae,  Planktothrix agardhii,  Microcystis flos-aquae  i  Planktothrix rubescens  koje ujedno i šire svoj areal rasprostranjenja na teritoriji Republike Srbije. U brojnim vodenim telima detektovani su mikrocistini i to u visokim koncentracijama.Istraživanje vodenog ekosistema Ludoš sa teritorije Republike Srbije vršeno je da bi se ustanovilo prisustvo i uticaj cijanobakterija i cijanotoksina na druge biljne i životinjske organizme u prirodnim uslovima. Trofički status jezera Ludoš najčešće je eutrofan, a cvetanje cijanobakterija kontinuirano još od 1970. godine. Tokom 2011. i 2012. godine  vrste Limnothrix  redekei  i  Pseudanabaena  limnetica  nađene  u  cvetanju. Detektovano je i prisustvo mikrocistina/nodularina i saksitoksina u biomasi i vodi, a mikrocistini su detektovani i u tkivu vodenih biljaka (trske  Phragmites communis, rogoza  Typha latifolia  i ljubičastog lokvanja Nymphaea elegans) i ribi (Carassius gibelio) iz jezera Ludoš. Histološkim pregledom tkiva ribe  pronađene su naizraženije promene u jetri, bubrezima i škrgama, a primećene su i na crevima.Testiranjem bioloških lesnih pokorica sa teritorije Vojvodine nisu detektovani mikrocistini/nodularini, a nije detektovana ni toksičnost uzoraka. Pretpostavlja se da su koncentracije cijanotoksina ispod granica detekcije ili ih nema u testiranim biološkim lesnim pokoricama. Razvojem novih metoda i optimizacijom postojećih za detekciju cijanotoksina u biološkim lesnim pokoricama i drugim terestričnim ekosistemima potrebno je proveriti dobijene rezultate.Proučavanjem svojstva 84 soja cijanobakterija iz NSCCC, koji potiču iz terestričnih i vodenih ekosistema sa teritorije Republike Srbije, dobijena je intracelularna toksičnost u eksponencijalnoj i stacionarnoj fazi rasta, kao i ekstracelularna toksičnost  kod jednog soja koji potiče sa terestričnog ekosistema. Dobijeni su i pozitivni rezultati  na prisustvo mikrocistina, nodularina ili/i saksitoksina kod 34,1% terestričnih i 55,5% vodenih sojeva koji potiču sa teritorije Republike Srbije. Rezultati ukazuju na  potencijalnu opasnost pojave ovih  mikroorganizama i njihovih toksičnih metabolita u različitim ekosistemima sa teritorije Republike Srbije.Eksperimentalno je potvrđena akumulacija mikrocistina u račiću  Daphnia pulex  usled ishrane toksičnim sojem iz NSCCC, zbog čega upotreba ove vrste račića u izvođenju bioloških testova za testiranje prisustva cijanotoksina treba da se preispita.  Štaviše, veliki broj jedinki dafnija (92,2%) koristio je istraživane sojeve iz NSCCC za ishranu, odnosno ishrana je bila moguća sa svim vodenim i sa gotovo 90% terestričnih sojeva, što može poslužiti kao osnov za dalja istraživanja prevencije cvetanja.S obzirom na mogućnost ishrane račića  Daphnia  sp. cijanobakterijama, kompleks ribnjaka sa teritorije Republike Srbije korišćen je za istraživanje potencijalnog načina prevencije pojave i cvetanja cijanobakterija u zavisnosti od pravovremenog unošenja pomenutog račića. Na osnovu koncentracije hlorofila  a  i trofičkog statusa,  kvalitativne i kvantitativne analize cijanobakterija, toksičnosti vode  i prisustva cijanotoksina mikrocistina/nodularina i saksitoksina, potvrđeno je smanjenje cvetanja cijanobakterija i drugih negativnih efekata u eksperimentalnim jezerima u odnosu na kontrolna. Ukoliko pak dođe do cvetanja i proizvodnje toksina  ijanobakterija u vodenim ekosistemima, zbog ozbiljnost pojave i mogućih negativnih posledica po zdravlje ljudi, neohodno je uvesti postupke eliminacije ćelija  cijanobakterija i njihovih  toksina u praksu pri obradi  otpadnih voda i prečišćavanja vode iz površinskih akumulacija u Republici Srbiji.
The presence of toxic  cyanobacteria in different ecosystems from the territory of the Republic of Serbia was analyzed as well as the negative consequences that may be causeed by these microorganisms. Serbian Cyanobacterial Data Base was formed where great number of important and useful information from over 70 literary sources regarding the distribution and frequency of cyanobacteria and their toxins over a period of 130 years, as well as their effects on wildlife in aquatic ecosystems, and beyond was presented. The study consisted of 64 aquatic ecosystems, including rivers, lakes, ponds, canals, irrigation reservoirs, reservoirs for drinking water supply and reservoirs with other purpose, where five species of cyanobacteria Microcystis aeruginosa,  Aphanizomenon flos-aquae,  Planktothrix agardhii,  Microcystis flosaquae  and  Planktothrix rubescens  frequently bloomed, and also expanded their area of distribution on the territory of the Republic of Serbia. In many water bodies microcystins were detected in high concentrations.Research into aquatic ecosystem Ludoš, located on the territory of the Republic of Serbia, was performed in order to determine the presence and effect of cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins on other plant and animal organisms in natural conditions. Trophic status of  the lake Ludoš was usually eutrophic, and cyanobacteria bloom is constant since 1970. During 2011 and 2012, the species Limnothrix  redekei  and  Pseudanabaena  limnetica  were found in blooming. Presence of microcystins/nodularin and saxitoxin was detected in  biomass and water, and microcystins were detected in tissues of aquatic plants (reed Phragmites communis, cattail Typha latifolia and royalblue waterlily  Nymphaea elegans) and fish (Carassius gibelio) from the lake Ludoš. Histological examination of tissue showed most prominent changes in liver, kidney and gills, and alterations were also observed in the intestine.Testing of the biological loess crust from Vojvodina showed no presence of microcystins/nodularin and toxicity of samples was not detected as well. It is assumed that cyanotoxin concentrations were below detection limit or are absent from the tested biological loess crusts. The development of new methods and optimization of existing ones for detection of cyanotoxins in biological loess crustsand  other terrestrial ecosystems is necessary in order to revise obtained results.Research of the properties from 84 strains of cyanobacteria from NSCCC originating from terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems from the territory of the Republic of  Serbia, resulte d inintracellular toxicity in exponential and stationary growth phase, as  well as extracellular toxicity of a strain originating from terrestrial ecosystems. The obtained results were positive for the presence of microcystins, nodularin and/or saxitoxin  for 34.1% terrestrial and 55.5% aquatic strains originating from the territory of the Republic of Serbia. These results demonstrate the potential risk of occurrence of these microorganisms and their metabolites in different ecosystems from the territory of the Republic of Serbia.Accumulation of microcystins in shrimp Daphnia pulex after feeding with toxic strain from NSCCC was experimentally confirmed, indicating that the use of this species of shrimp in biological tests which determine the presence of cyanotoxins needs to be revisited. Moreover, a large number of Daphnia  individuals (92.2%) used the investigated strains of NSCCC for food, and the feeding was possible with all  the water strains and nearly 90% of terrestrial strains, which can serve as a basis for further research of bloom prevention.With regard to the possibility shrimp Daphnia sp. feeding with cyanobacteria, a complex of ponds from the territory of the Republic of Serbia was used to explore  potential ways of prevention the occurrence and blooming of cyanobacteria, depending on the timely introduction of the aforementioned shrimp. Based on the concentrations of chlorophyll  a  and trophic status, qualitative and quantitative analysis of cyanobacteria, the toxicity of water and the presence of  cyanotoxins microcystins/nodularin and saxitoxin, reduction in blooming cyanobacteria and other negative effects in the experimental lakes when compared to the control lakes was confirmed. If the blooming regardless occurres as well as production of cyanobacterial  toxins in aquatic ecosystems, due to the seriousness of the phenomenon and the possible negative consequences for human health, it would be necessary to introduce  procedures for the elimination of cells of cyanobacteria and their toxins into practice in waste water treatment and purification of water from surface reservoirs in the Republic of Serbia.

Abstract:
Der Zerfall des sozialistischen Jugoslawien ließ aus seinen acht föderalen Einheiten sieben neue Staaten ent-stehen. Die einzige bislang unerforschte Ausnahme ist dabei die Autonome Provinz Vojvodina, die weiterhin ein Teil Serbiens bleibt, wenn auch mit einer erheblich eingeschränkten Autonomie. Insbesondere Fragen nach Qualität bzw. Quantität der Autonomie waren Gegenstand heftiger politischer Auseinandersetzungen in der Vojvodina seit Ende der 1980er Jahre. Die politischen Unterschiede zwischen den „Autonomisten“ in der Provinz, die sich auch in den 1990ern für eine breite Autonomie einsetzten, und der Belgrader Zentralregierung, deren Macht auf der Idee eines starken vereinten Serbiens beruhte, wurden von den ersteren zunehmend als historisch vorbestimmte kulturelle Differenzen ausgelegt, die hier als „Phantomgrenzen“ untersucht werden. In Form verschiedener symbolisch verknüpfter Aussagen über die historische Besonderheit der Bevölkerung, Wirtschaft und Kultur der Vojvodina wurden die politischen Forderungen nach mehr Autonomie wiederholt bekräftigt. Diese wiederum wurde auch als Schutz vor dem und Gegenmodell zum erstarkten serbischen Nationalismus der „Ära Milošević“ dargestellt. Im Laufe der inzwischen mehr als zwei Jahrzehnte fügten sich diese Deutungen zu einem neuen Autonomiediskurs zusammen. Wie dieser entstand, d.h. welche Akteure wie und zu welchen Zwecken die Phantomgrenzen der Vojvodina wieder auftauchen ließen, sowie welche Bedeutung die Autonomieidee in der Umbruchszeit der 1990er Jahre im Alltag der Menschen in der Vojvodina erlangte, sind zentrale Forschungsfragen der Fallstudie. Sie bietet damit nicht nur neue empirische Erkenntnisse zur Geschichte des jugoslawischen Staatszerfalls und der postsozialistischen Zeit in Südosteuropa, sondern ermöglicht mit dem verwendeten Modell der „Phantomgrenzen“ auch neue Einblicke in und allgemeine Aussagen über das Wiederauftauchen von Geschichte und historischen Grenzen in Osteuropa nach 1989.
The breakup of socialist Yugoslavia led to the creation of seven new states out of its eight federal units. The only exception, until now unexplored, is the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, which remains a part of Serbia, although with a substantially restricted autonomy. Notably questions about the quality and quantity of autonomy have been a subject of heavy political conflicts in Vojvodina since the end of the 1980s. Political differences between the „autonomists“ in the province, who also during the 1990s advocated a broad autonomy, and the central government in Belgrade, whose power was based on the idea of a strong unified Serbia, the former increasingly presented as historically predetermined cultural differences, which are explored here as “phantom borders”. The political claims for more autonomy were thus repeatedly reinforced in terms of various symbolically connected statements about the historical distinctiveness of the population, economy and culture of Vojvodina. The autonomy in turn was also represented as an instrument of protection against and alternative model to the growing Serbian nationalism during the “Milošević era”. In the course of meanwhile more than two decades these interpretations merged into a new autonomy discourse. How this emerged, i.e. which agents made how and for what purposes the phantom borders of Vojvodina reappear, as well as what relevance the idea of autonomy gained during the period of radical change in the 1990s in everyday life of the people in Vojvodina are the central research questions of the case study. It hereby offers not only new empirical findings about the history of the breakup of the Yugoslav state and the post-socialist period in Southeastern Europe, but due to the used model of “phantom borders” also permits new insights into and general conclusions about the reappearance of history and historical borders in Eastern Europe after 1989.

Abstract:
Cultural festivals and major cultural events have various effects on the overall city development. This especially comes to the light in case of the cities caring the title of European Capital of culture. Nowadays, there are plenty of studies on cultural events, with the majority of them focusing on cultural tourists’ perceptions and perspectives. The local community, as a very important key actor, however, is very often neglected in the studies. In light of the fact that Novi Sad (Serbia) is caring the title of European Capital of Culture in 2022, this paper focuses on the local community and its perception of the impact of the cultural events on all aspects of the city’s development, including city image. Data were collected before the title year (in 2020 and 2021) via a survey filled by 239 residents of Novi Sad. The results indicate that residents consider cultural events the most beneficial in terms of improving city image, creating opportunities for international publicity, providing entertainment and learning opportunities for the local community, as well as contributing to a better understanding of different cultures and generating tourism income. On the other hand, negative effects are related to the increase in service prices, the total price of living and the increase in alcohol and drug consumption. Differences in sociodemographic characteristics are analyzed and discussed in the paper.

The subject of the research is Chinese investments in the modernization and reconstruction of railway infrastructure in Serbia, with a focus on the construction of the Belgrade-Budapest high-speed rail line up to 200 km/h, on the sections Belgrade-Stara Pazova and Novi Sad-Subotica-Kelebija. The research aims to analyze the impact of Chinese investment projects on the railway infrastructure in Serbia and examine the effects of projects' implementation at different levels, including the challenges they face. The analysis covers the traffic, technical-technological and financial aspects of the project. The importance of building a high-speed railway through Serbia, but also of the shortest railway connection from Western and Central Europe in the countries of Southern Europe and the Middle and the Far East, is considered, especially in the context of the cooperation within the BRI. The research results are the presentation of the effects railway infrastructure projects have on the development of Serbian economy, as well as the challenges that arise during the implementation process.

In their struggle for survival on the international market and to increase their own competitiveness, agricultural producers in the Republic of Serbia are faced with the demands of modern society. Such requirements are reflected through the measures and actions that have to be taken in order to achieve economic and environmental efficiency, in other words profitability of production with minimal risk of environmental degradation. In this research, focus is on economic and environmental aspects of vegetable production with known origin and controlled quality within the region of Danube Basin (or in the Metropolitan area Belgrade - Novi Sad that also includes the administrative territory of the Pancevo city). In particular, research activities are concentrated on the ecological and economic aspects in production of safe food on family farms in Glogonj village, a village that is one of the most famous locations for vegetable production within the Pancevo city (Južnobanatski District, region of AP Vojvodina). Consequently, in this chapter examples of analytical calculations based on variable costs in the vegetable production (production of cucumbers and tomatoes in greenhouse) are presented.

Success in the organization of sports events is equally significant for both sports organizations and event destinations (Maksimović, 2008; Maksimović and Raič, 2011). The realization of the European Sambo Championship for men and women of junior and senior age, the program activities of the sports association of the city of Novi Sad, the Provincial Secretariat for Sports and Youth, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Government of the Republic of Serbia, the Sambo Federation of Serbia and the program activities of the European Sambo Federation are realized (ESF) for 2022. The aim of the work is to prepare an elaboration of the organization of the competition. The European Championship took place from 14.09.2022. until 19.09.2022. in Novi Sad, SPENS small hall. The essay is based on three world sambo championships that were held in Novi Sad in 2017, 2018 and 2020 (Matic et al., 2020; Gentile et al., 2021; Milovanovic et al., 2021). These events were chosen because they were organized at the highest level of organization in the Sports and Business Center Novi Sad (SPENS).

Purpose – The aim of this paper is to identify tourists' satisfaction with ICT performance in two tourist destinations in Serbia. In addition, one of the goals of the research is to determine the weaknesses and strengths of the tourist offer at the destinations, in order to choose an adequate tourism development strategy in the future to improve the competitiveness of the tourist offer in Serbia and possibly find patterns of development between different destinations. Methodology – Measuring the importance and satisfaction with the performance of smart technologies was carried out in two destinations, Novi Sad and Vrnjačka Banja (Serbia). IPA analysis was used to assess the importance and performance of 38 attributes related to ICT in the selected destinations. Exploratory factor analysis was used to identify groups of smart technologies that tourists consider when evaluating smart tourist destinations. Findings – When examining individual components, the ICT tourism offer in Novi Sad and Vrnjačka Banja are evaluated as fairly low. The results of the analysis showed that Novi Sad, is a more competitive destination than Vrnjačka Banja in terms of the deployment of smart technologies. Contribution – The analysis of weaknesses and strengths can be particularly insightful in revealing what is prioritized more and what is viewed as less crucially, for the overall experience and satisfaction of tourists in order to improve the tourist experience. The results of this research provide practical knowledge for DMOs and tourism companies, to understand the benefits of smart tourism as an important direction in improving the competitiveness of a tourist destination.

Given the fact that students manifest a much greater interest in modern methods of online language learning than to classical approach, the authors have devised a website as an additional tool for learning Romanian language for all study groups at the Faculty of Philosophy in Novi Sad. Since this is an attempt in its infancy, the site will be upgraded in the future, according to requirements of the students. All explanations, grammar and history of Romanian language are given in the Serbian language. The creation of such a web portal, the first in Serbia for learning the Romanian language, provides opportunities for promotion of Romanian in modern way.

Purpose – Tourism industry is facing unexpected economic consequences of the COVID-19 outbreak, indicating the need for knowledge that would support the crisis management in rapidly changed market conditions. Such difficulties increased the managers’ and decision makers’ anxiety and put a pressure on actions with uncertain outcomes. Tourism has become a top priority in Serbia, which is supported by the fact that Novi Sad was declared European Capital of Culture (ECoC) 2021. Authors analyzed the consequences on the ECoC Novi Sad (Serbia). Methodology – The research was conducted in the form of interviews with representatives of the leading institutions related to the ECoC project and tourism of the City of Novi Sad, institutions in the field of the ECoC project management, tourism and creative industries, as well as the leading institution for tourist promotion of the City. Findings – The main findings are indicating the fact that respondents’ marketing and management concepts, applied in the previous year of the crisis, are proactive and reflected in the following activities: planning, organizing, communicating, controlling. The main issues were related to the following topics: Modifications in the business since the moment when the COVID-19 pandemic was declared until today; Assessment of the travel risk/benefit perception and activities related to mitigation/exploitation of such circumstances and; Recommendations in the field of the crisis management segment for the next ECoC. Contribution – This research will focus on building a knowledge base for various stakeholders from different sectors in terms of developing the guidelines for the risk management strategies.

Multifamily housing complexes establish a crucial basis for the quality of life of its residents. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns, the value and often lack of green areas in cities has been highlighted in recent years. Relying on theories and research in regards to the benefits of these natural areas for the well-being of residents, this paper aims to research the quality of life that certain urban residential block types in Novi Sad can provide based on the articulation and implementation of green areas within their spatial frames. By comparing two blocks built in different periods - socialist and post-socialist, we will be able to understand the changes multifamily housing has gone through since its introduction in the form of large-scale complexes in Novi Sad in socialist Yugoslavia and assess the current approach to the formation of residential urban blocks regarding green areas and their impact on the overall life quality of residents.

Abstract:
The research paper analyzes the various funding sources available to support academic engagement activities among scholars in the Republic of Serbia. The study focused on the two largest and most influential universities, the University of Novi Sad (UNS) and the University of Belgrade (UB). A questionnaire was sent to 3,163 scholars, and 184 respondents' answers were analyzed to compare funding sources. These sources included government grants, foreign (EU) grants, university resources, own resources, private market capital, and venture capital. The study tested for statistically significant differences in funding sources between the two universities and found a significant difference in relation to two sources: own resources and venture capital. The University of Novi Sad had a significant advantage in attracting venture capital. Overall, the study shows that researchers at the two universities use slightly different funding sources to support academic engagement activities.

Abstract:
Demographic results extracted from the national census in Serbia in 2022 reveal the big population decrease in the country. This reflects on the state of 167 Serbian cities. The census data shows that only 11% of urban settlements in Serbia demographically grew between 2011 and 2022. This data is even more severe if it is known that most of growing cities are in the urban areas of Belgrade and Novi Sad. This paper first presents the review of (the shrinkage) of Serbian cities by the population census in 2022; then, it opens a discussion about who apparently ubiquitous urban shrinkage can be utilised for urban redevelopment regardless of whether it means a reurbanisation or the slowing down of the shrinkage. In this section, the theoretical elements of the concept of shrinking cities are given in order to draw conclusions about the perspectives of cities in Serbia.
