Abstract:

In this article I argue for an interpretive approach to bioethics with critically ill children. I begin by highlighting the dominant Anglo-American bioethical framework that defines standards for ethical care in critically ill children and then outline a critique of this framework. Drawing predominantly on the ideas of Charles Taylor, Michael Walzer and Richard Zaner, I call for a reconception of bioethics and propose an interpretive ‘thick’ framework that is centred on culture and context. Finally, I illustrate this interpretive approach through a comparative study of two cases in pediatric intensive care: the narratives of Marc and Larry. These case studies reveal that ethical dilemmas in pediatric critical care can be traced to relational tensions over respect, trust and power rooted in the disparity of moral horizons among the persons involved.

Abstract:

The frequent use of metaphors in health care communication in general and clinical ethics cases in particular calls for a more mindful and competent use of figurative speech. Metaphors are powerful tools that enable different ways of thinking about complex issues in health care. However, depending on how and in which context they are used, they can also be harmful and undermine medical decision-making. Given this contingent nature of metaphors, this article discusses two approaches that suggest how medical health care professionals may systematically and imaginatively work with metaphors. The first approach is informed by a model developed by cognitive scientists George Lakoff and Mark Turner. The second approach is a close reading and thus a text-immanent, hermeneutical strategy. Using the double perspective of an ethics consultant and a researcher in literature studies, we take a case from Richard M Zaner in which a metaphor is central to the clinical-ethical problem. The article shows that the approaches, which focus on creativity and the intersections of form and content, may be helpful tools in clinical ethics, enabling a competent and mindful working with metaphors in complex cases as well as supporting the consultant’s thoughts processes.

Abstract:

This paper deals with the Serbian interrogative particle zar/zar/zar ?num, forsan?, typically positioned at the beginning of a sentence (expressing surprise, wonder, disbelief, dissent, etc.) or at its end, coupled with ne and separated by a comma (in guided questions, affirmative and negative alike: Ti ga (ne) volis, zar ne?), yet also broadly attested in obsolete use (in the 19-20th-century literature) in modal function, where it is synonymous to valjda, mozda ?perhaps, maybe?. After a review of the ways zar is treated in modern Serbian grammars and descriptive dictionaries (including several dialectal dictionaries), and following research of Macedonian, Bulgarian and Turkish dictionaries, its etymology is discussed: Skok?s unconvincing idioglottal interpretation is refuted, and Resetar?s idea is reintroduced (prevoiusly rejected by Skok, questioned by Elezovic, accepted in the RJA) that zar, along with its obliterated forms zaer, zajer, zaher, should be traced back to Turkish zahir adv. ?apparently, clearly, evidently?, ?seemingly, perhaps, maybe?. The semantic-syntactic evolution of the loanword within the Serbian language is illustrated, and hence the alloglottal etymology corroborated, by a selection of quotes from folklore and eminent 19-20th-century writers. And finally, as the most likely, the paper offers the interpretation of this particle as a hybrid formation resulting from contamination by the Turkisms of an idioglottal zar, which could be related to archaic Polish za? < PSl. *za-ze.

AbstractOne of the important tenets of emergency preparedness is that planning for disaster response should resemble standard operating procedure whenever possible. Electronic order entry has become part of the standard operating procedures of most institutions but many of these systems are either too cumbersome for use during a surge or can even be rendered non-functional during a sudden patient surge such as a mass-casualty incident (MCI). Presented here is an experience with delayed radiology order entry during a recent MCI and the after action programming of the system based on this real experience. In response to the after action analysis of the MCI, a task force was assigned to solve the MCI radiology order entry problem and a solution to streamline disaster image ordering was devised. A “browse page” was created that lists every x-ray and every CT scan that might be needed in such an event with all required information defaulted to “Disaster.” This created a way to order multiple images for any one patient, with 40% time saving over standard electronic order entry. This disaster radiology order entry solution is an example of the surge preparedness needed to promote patient safety and efficient care delivery as the widespread deployment of electronic health records and order entry continues across the United States.BookmanK, ZaneR. Abstract:

This study examines the Türkiye-European Union relations of the Zafer Party, which was recently established in Türkiye and has been on the agenda with its discourses. The study consists of three chapters. In the first chapter, the definition of the Radical Right Party is made conceptually, and its general discourses are put forward. In the second chapter, the Radical Right Parties in Europe are examined and their discourses about the European Union are discussed. In the third chapter, the Zafer Party’s view of the European Union and Türkiye-EU relations is examined. In this study, the program of the Zafer Party, its manifesto and the Ümit Özdağ’s discourses were examined. In the Zafer Party, both the discourses of Chairman Ümit Özdağ and the discourses of other party members were examined and an evaluation was made with the claim that the Zafer Party was the first example of the Radical Right Parties in Europe in Türkiye. AbstractIn this study, a novel parvovirus (zander/M5/2015/HUN, OK236393) was detected in faecal specimens from a fish – zander or pikeperch (Sander lucioperca) – and genetically characterized using viral metagenomics and PCR methods. The NS1 and VP1 proteins of zander/M5/2015/HUN share <30% aa sequence identity, respectively, with the corresponding proteins of known members of the family Parvoviridae. Out of 62 faecal specimens collected from 13 freshwater fish species, three (4.8%) samples were positive by PCR for the novel parvovirus – all from zander. This is the second parvovirus detected in fish – after the disease-causing tilapia parvovirus of the subfamily Hamaparvovirinae – and it potentially represents a novel genus in the subfamily Parvovirinae.

Abstract:

The research objective was to compare the quality in use and nutritional value of muscle tissue of zander (Sander lucioperca) and pike (Esox lucius) reared in a polyculture. The research material comprised 16 specimens (8 of each species) captured from one pond in a fish farm situated in the Lublin Voivodeship. The fish were of similar age. The pike, while having a higher body weight, had a higher percentage of guts, and the carcass percentage and a Fulton’s condition coefficient were lower than in the zander. The chemical composition and calorific value of the muscle tissue were very similar for the two species (water 76.40% and 77.15%; protein 21.26% and 21.41%; lipids 0.41% and 0.58%; ash 1.43% and 1.42%; and energy 517 and 528 kJ/100 g for zander and pike, respectively). It is worth noting the high INQ value for the protein of both fish species (6.8 for pike and 6.9 for zander), which indicates that a 100 g portion of zander or pike fillet is a valuable source of protein in the human diet.

Eighteen taxa are proposed as new synonyms in this study. Barbula calycina Schwägr. and Tortula ruraliformis (Besch.) Ingham are reported new for China. The types of Barbula pugionata Müll. Hal. and Streblotrichum gracillimum Herzog could not be located; comments on these two taxa are given. Barbula pugionata is considered as a questionable synonym of Syntrichia gemmascens (P.C. Chen) R.H. Zander. Streblotrichum gracillimum is Bellibarbula recurva (Griff.) R.H. Zander. Fruiting specimens of Didymodon giganteus (Funck) Jur., Didymodon leskeoides K. Saito and Didymodon subandreaeoides (Kindb.) R.H. Zander are reported from the Himalayas. Didymodon subandreaeoides and Bryoerythrophyllum rubrum (Geh.) P.C. Chen are reported new for Mongolia. Didymodon hastatus (Mitt.) R.H. Zander replaces Didymodon maschalogena (Renauld & Cardot) Broth. Barbula subcontorta Broth. is here viewed as Didymodon tectorum (Müll. Hal.) K. Saito: the latter is a distinct species.

Abstract:

The chemical and fatty acid composition were evaluated of commercially important fish species (common carp, silver carp, bighead carp, grass carp, Wels catfish, and zander) which were collected from retail stores in the area of Novi Sad, Republic of Serbia. The amount of protein was the highest in zander (19.27%) and the lowest in grass carp fillets (14.73%). The percentage of fat ranged from 1.8 in zander to 10.07 in common carp. The total cholesterol content was the highest in Chinese carps fillets (approximately 65.38 mg/100 g), and the lowest in Wels catfish (33.14 mg/100 g). SFA were lowest in zander (28.6%). Bighead carp meat contained the highest percentage of PUFA (33.73%) while the lowest percentage was detected in common carp (20.1%). The chemical and fatty acid compositions of fish vary greatly between different species and within the same species. The quality of fish meat in Serbian retail stores is quite good but it should be improved by using feed mixtures on fish ponds.

Abstract:

The genus Erythrolamprus Boie (1826) comprises six species of Central and South American false coral snakes (Peters & Orejas-Miranda 1970; Zaher 1999; Curcio et al. 2009). It is traditionally allocated in the tribe Xenodontini (subfamily Xenodontinae), along with the genera Liophis, Lystrophis, Umbrivaga, Waglerophis and Xenodon (sensu Dixon 1980; Cadle 1984; Myers 1986; Ferrarezzi 1994; Zaher 1999). Although Xenodontini is supported by morphological and molecular evidence, phylogenetic relationships and classification within the tribe have been the subject of recent debate. Molecular phylogenetic studies have recovered clades with Erythrolamprus nested within some representatives of the genus Liophis (Vidal et al. 2000; Zaher et al. 2009), partly corroborating previous hypotheses based on morphology (e.g. Dixon 1980).

Abstract:

The article presents the research materials of pike perch r. Volga and the Kuibyshev reservoir and noted the changes that have occurred in its population. Prior to the creation of the reservoir in the conditions of the Middle Volga, male zander matured at the age of 5–6 years, females at 6–7 years. In the Kuibyshev reservoir, pike perch becomes sexually mature at the age of 4–5 years, and a small part of it matures at the age of three. In the reservoir, due to ecological plasticity and the ability to lay eggs in a wide temperature range, regardless of the level regime of the reservoir and the spawning substrate, a gradual increase in its biological indicators, abundance and reserves began to be noted. Improving the feeding conditions of zander in the reservoir contributed to earlier puberty, an increase in the absolute fecundity of fish and its abundance in the reservoir. This contributed to an increase in zander catches since 1974, which in 1985 reached a maximum of 517 tons (9,2% of the total fish catch in the reservoir). Sufficiently high catches of zander over the past 10–15 years indicate the stability of its stocks in the Kuibyshev reservoir, which currently tend to increase. The multi-age sizeweight composition of zander in the Kuibyshev reservoir is represented by both young and older individuals, and confirms that the population is in good condition.

The Vygozero Reservoir has the status of a reservoir of republican subordination, and fishing there is carried out mainly by fishermen of the Segezha region of the Republic of Karelia. The Vygozero Reservoir contributes 3-7% to the total volume of fish catch in Karelia and occupies 5–6 place in terms of catch among 12 fishing reservoirs of the Republic of Karelia. In this regard, the problem of monitoring the populations of valuable commercial fish species of the Vygozero Reservoir is urgent at the present stage. First of all, zander and whitefish are among species with TAC (total allowable catch) in the Vygozero Reservoir. There are given the results of works carried out within the framework of the state projects and economic contractual topics of the North Research Institute of Fishery under Petrozavodsk State University, Northern Water Problems Institute of the Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences for assessing the stock and production of whitefish and zander in the Vygozero (Vygozero-Onda) Reservoir. Whitefish should be taken into the commercial operation from the age of 5+, and zander from the age of 7+ and older. The performed calculations of the stock size based on the data of 2005–2020 allow the TAC volume for whitefish today to be up to 3 tons, or 20.8% of the commercial stock amount (with the maximum norm of 23.4%), zander 18 tons, or 17.7% of the stock (norm = 18.6%). As a result of the calculations and studies, recommendations were made for the rational use of whitefish and zander in the Vygozero Reservoir at the present stage.

Önceleri tarım üzerinden gıdayla ve yemekle ilgilenmeye başladım. Doktoranın ilk yıllarında tarımla ilgili ekonomi politik, tarihsel sosyoloji bağlamında okumalar yapmıştım. Ama işin sadece üretim tarafının değil aynı zamanda tüketim tarafının da benim ilgi alanıma girmesi biraz daha doktora yıllarının sonlarına doğru oldu. Ve o dönemde, yani kabaca 90’ların ikinci yarısı, aslında hakikaten bugünkü kadar çok gelişmiş bir yemek sosyolojisi literatürü yoktu. Sınırlıydı. Doktora tezinde ne çalışsam diye düşünürken Sidney Mintz'in Sweetness and Power kitabı elime geçmişti. Çok etkilendim bu çalışmadan. Şeker üzerinden bütün dünya tarihini birçok farklı aşamasıyla ve dönüşümleriyle birlikte anlatan bir kitaptı. İşte içerisinde sömürgecilik de vardı sanayileşme de, Amerika da vardı Avrupa da. 16. yüzyıldan itibaren şekerin bütün aktörleriyle, adaletsizlikleriyle, ritüelleriyle modern hayatı nasıl şekillendirdiğini anlatıyordu. Yine aynı dönemde Sami Zubaida ve Richard Tapper’in derlediği “Culinary Cultures of the Middle East” kitabı elime geçmişti. Çok zengin bir koleksiyondu. İçerisinde İstanbul da vardı Yemen de, baklava da vardı keşkek de. Çok farklı coğrafyalara dair ve o çok farklı coğrafyaların içerdiği çok ciddi toplumsal, kültürel sorunlara dair çok kafa açıcı bir kitaptı. Böylece yeme-içmenin sadece üretim tarafı değil aynı zamanda kültürel yönleriyle de ilgilenmeye başladım. Böyle daha çok kitaplar üzerinden giden ve büyüyen bir ilgi oldu diyebilirim.

Abstract:

Fatty acid content of raw and cooked zander (Sander lucioperca) was studied. Special attention was paid to long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids: eicosapentaenoic, 20:5 n-3 (EPA) and docosahexaenoic, 22:6 n-3 (DHA), and also to the n-6/n-3 ratio, which are regarded as indicators of nutritive value. As found, the heat treatments, boiling, stewing and frying, including those in a convection steam oven (CSO), did not significantly decrease the content of EPA and DHA in the products. Boiling and stewing appeared to give products of a higher nutritive value, regarding the above indicators, than frying and cake preparation. Frying of zander in CSO was found to be more beneficial for nutrition compared to pan-frying. The cooked zander had higher EPA and DHA contents than many other popular food fish species, and also had a high nutritive value due to the low n-6/n-3 ratio when boiled and stewed.

Abstract:

A series of benzo[b]thiophene and their benzo[4,5]thieno[3,2-b]pyran derivatives (3a-f), (4a-f), (5a-f) and 6 were synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic and elemental analysis. All compounds were subjected to one dose anticancer screening in NCI- America, but only the compounds gave high percent growth inhibition were further subjected to five dose screening. A good result of compound 4f with GI50 = 0.15 µmol, TGI= 1.14 µmol and 4c with GI50 = 1.09 µmol, TGI = 10.19 µmol, LC50 = 100 µmol on HT-29 cell line. To explore mechanism of cytotoxicity, compound 4f and 4c were allowed to affect cell cycle progression using HT-29 cell line (human colon cancer) in two-time interval (24 and 48 hr). The cytotoxicity of 4f and 4c was correlated with induction of apoptosis causing pre-G1apoptosis and cell growth arrest at G2/M in a time dependant manner through inhibition of CDK-2. For exploring the SAR for all synthesized compounds, IC50 of 5d was determined which was equal to 0.32 ±0.05 µmol, IC50 of 6 was equal to be 0.15 ±0.01 µmol while IC50 of erlotinib reference was equal to 0.3±0.02 µmol. Finally we were able to synthesize a series of benzo[b] thiophene, benzo[4,5]thieno[3,2-b]pyran having a good cytotoxic activity suggesting promising anticancer derivatives.

Keyhüsrev'in şehadet haberi Selçuklu ordusu arasında şok tesiri yapmış, panik dalga dalga yayılmış ve zafer birdenbire bozguna dönüşmüştür. Seyfeddin Ayaba gibi bazı komutanlar esir düşerken, bazıları da Sultan'ın naaşını yanlarına almayı bile düşünmeden, süratle Konya'nın yolunu tutmuşlardır.

In a recent paper by S. Pandey, V. Paulsen, J. Prakash, and M. Rahaman, the authors studied the entanglement breaking quantum channels $\Phi_t:\mbb{C}^{d\times d} \to \mbb{C}^{d \times d}$ for $t \in [-\frac{1}{d^2-1}, \frac{1}{d+1}]$ defined by $\Phi_t(X) = tX+ (1-t)\tr(X) \frac{1}{d}I$. They proved that Zauner's conjecture is equivalent to the statement that entanglement breaking rank of $\Phi_{\frac{1}{d+1}}$ is $d^2$. The authors made the extended conjecture that $\ebr(\Phi_t)=d^2$ for every $t \in [0, \frac{1}{d+1}]$ and proved it in dimensions 2 and 3. In this paper we prove that for any $t \in [-\frac{1}{d^2-1}, \frac{1}{d+1}] \setminus\{0\}$ the equality $\ebr(\Phi_t)=d^2$ is equivalent to the existence of a pair of informationally-complete unit-norm tight frames $\{|x_i\ra\}_{i=1}^{d^2}, \{|y_i\ra\}_{i=1}^{d^2}$ in $\mbb{C}^d $ which are mutually unbiased in the following sense: for any $i\neq j$ it holds that $|\la x_i|y_j\ra|^2 = \frac{1-t}{d}$ and $|\la x_i|y_i\ra|^2 = \frac{t(d^2-1)+1}{d}$. Broth. is an older name for Didymodon michiganensis (Steere) K. Saito. A study of types of species described as endemic to the Cape Verde Islands revealed that Barbula bolleana (C. Müll.) Broth. is an earlier name for Hydrogonium bolleanum (C. Müll.) Jaeg., Barbula elliottii Broth., Barbula kivuensis Leroy & P. de la Varde and Barbula madagassa Ren. & Card. are synonymous with the latter, Hyophila crenulata C. Müll. ex Dus. var. brevifolia Bizot is synonymous with Hyophila involuta (Hook.), Barbula sulcata Geh. is synonymous with B. convoluta Hedw. and Tortula subcaroliniana Bizot is synonymous with Tortula amphidiacea (C. Müll.) Broth. In addition to the so far unpublished results of recent collections, a complete survey of the bryophyte flora of the Cape Verde Islands is given. A hundred and sixty two species (2 species of hornworts, 36 species of hepatics and 124 species of mosses) are so far known from this archipelago.

1960’lı yıllardan günümüze uzanan Türk-Alman Göçmen Edebiyatı, Almanya’da yaşayan Türk kökenli sanatçıların, Almanca veya Türkçe meydana getirdikleri eserleri kapsamaktadır. Bu edebiyat, eserlerin içeriğindeki ortaklığa bakılarak değil; yazarların ve şairlerin kimliğine bakılarak oluşturulmasından dolayı, temeline kimlik sorununu aldığını söylemek mümkündür. Türk ve Alman benliklerini bir çatı altında birleştirmeye çalışmaları sanatçıları beslemiş ve bu durum edebi eserlerine kaynak oluşturmuştur. Türk-Alman Göçmen Edebiyatının ikinci kuşak yazarları arasında kabul edilen Zafer Şenocak’ın kaleme aldığı romanlarda da iki kimlikten de izler taşındığını görmekteyiz. Bu çalışmada Türk-Alman yazar Zafer Şenocak’ın Türkçe yayımlanmış beş romanı (Tehlikeli Akrabalık, Alman Terbiyesi, Yolculuk Nereye, Köşk, Dünyanın İki Ucu) iki dilli yaşam ve ana dil sorunu çerçevesinde incelenecektir. Bu romanların başkişilerini Almanya’da yaşayan ya da daha önce uzun yıllar yaşamış Türkler oluşturmaktadır. Kimlik sorununun baskın olduğu bu eserlerde, Almanya’da yaşayan Türk göçmenlerin içinde bulunduğu iki dilli yaşamın izleklerine de ulaşılabilmektedir. Bahsi geçen romanlardaki karakterlerin içinde yaşadıkları Alman toplumu ve aile ekseninde sürdürdükleri dilde ve kültürde ikili yaşam, kahramanları kimliklerini sorguladıkları büyük bir arayışa götürmektedir. Çalışmamızda Zafer Şenocak’ın romanlarındaki kimlik sorunu, iki dillilik ve ana dil çerçevesinde tartışılacaktır. Bu bağlamda; romanlar metin çözümleme yöntemi kullanılarak incelenecek ve ana dile karşı değişen tutum tespit edilecektir.

ABSTRACTDuring an early summer visit in 2000, mosses were collected from sites around Heard Island. Three species, Bryoerythrophyllum recurvirostrum (Hedw.) P.C.Chen, Philonotis cf. tenuis (Taylor) Reichardt and Syntrichia filaris (Müll.Hall) R.H. Zander have been added to the list of moss species known from the island, bringing the total to 40 moss taxa. Syntrichia anderssonii (abcngström) R.H. Zander was found with sporophytes, whereas previously its sporophytes were known in the sub-Antarctic only from Macquarie Island. Extensions of range on Heard Island have been recorded for several species. There are few geographical differences in species composition between locations around the island, provided appropriate habitats exist.
