Abstract:
During the excavations of the hillfort located on the river Don near the village of Verkhneye Kazachye (Lipetsk region) the burial of four people, dating back to the 4th–3th centuries BC, was discovered in a pit left over from an abandoned well of the beginning of the Scythian era. It was done simultaneously, although it included heterogeneous remains. At a depth of about 4 m the full bodies of three men aged more than 50 years were buried. Above, a partially decomposed corpse and individual bones of another man aged more than 60 years were laid. Parts of cow carcasses and fragments of stucco dishes apparently accompanied the burial. The well pit, filled up to the top, was blocked by clay and carbonaceous layers left over from the site where the ritual actions were performed. There were two bone harpoon tips in the backfill. No traces of violent death were found on the remains of people. There was also no evidence of dismemberment of corpses. Markers of physiological stress and pathologies (caries, tartar, periodontal disease, osteophytes, lifetime fractures, etc.) were traced on the bones. The lifetime growth of individuals is determined. A graphic portrait reconstruction is performed for one of them. The studied object is interpreted as a funerary-sacrificial complex. In general, it is similar to the burials of the same time known at another Don hillfort in the city of Semiluki, which contained complete and scattered skeletons, traces of post-burial rituals.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The publication consists of a research article and the first publication of the source. The article presents a historical and source-oriented commentary on the service of Bishop Jeremiah (Solovyov) to three Russian prelates who were glorified in the 1860's Mitrofan of Voronezh, Demetrius of Rostov, and Tikhon of Zadonsk. The reason for the creation of this hymnographic monument was the intention of the former bishop of Nizhny Novgorod to consecrate one of the churches under construction in honor of these saints. When writing the service to the three saints, Bishop Jeremiah relied on a wide range of sources, including the works of St. Demetrius of Rostov and the penitential canon of Cyril of Turov. The publication is intended to illustrate Bishop Jeremiah's work as a hymnographer and to present a little-known example of a service to Russian saints composed during the Synodal period of the history of the Russian Church.

Abstract:
The Dunkleosteidae Stensiö family includes large predatory Paleozoic armour fishes. Their remains are rare in the Devonian deposits of the European part of Russia (Central Devonian field). The finds of both Eastmanosteus Obruchev and Dunkleosteus Lehman genus representatives and indefinte dunkleosteids were detected in the area. currently there is a collection of some dunkleosteid remains at the Earth Sciences Museum of Moscow State University. The materials were collected in two localities in 2007-2008 years by the author. Plates of the head and trunk shields, preliminarily determined as Eastmanosteus aff. E. pustulosus (Eastman), were found in the sandy clay deposits of the Ardatovka Horizon (Givetian, Middle Devonian) in the Pavlovsk Quarry, Voronezh Region. An incomplete anterior ventro-lateral plate of Dunkleosteidae gen. et sp. indet., similar to the same plates of the Dunkleosteus-species, was discovered in the sandy deposits of the Zadonsk Horizon (Lower Famennian, Upper Devonian) in the Lime Factory Quarry not far from Livny Town, Orel Region. The brief description of the new findings supplementing the data on the Middle-Late Devonian dunkleosteids of the Central Devonian field is given.

Abstract:
The article proposes a typology of righteous heroes on the material of L. N. Tolstoy’s stories “Father Sergius,” “False Coupon,” “Alyosha the Pot,” and F. M. Dostoevsky’s novels “Teenager,” “The Brothers Karamazov.” The “great sinners” Dostoevsky and Tolstoy have gospel prototypes — the prodigal son and the “prudent thief.” At the same time, both writers have static characters — righteous people carrying Christian ideals. In the later stories of Tolstoy and the novels of Dostoevsky, there is a teleological plot, which includes the plot motifs of the test, the choice of the hero, and his movement toward salvation. Turning to the ethical teaching of A. A. Ukhtomsky, created based on the works of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky, allows us to highlight the dominant character of the hero, which involves the rejection of egocentrism and determines his salvation, as well as the hero’s “doubles” and “interlocutors” who are capable of awakening his selfawareness. A comparison of the reading range of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky shows their attention to the works of John Climacus, Isaac the Syrian, and Tikhon of Zadonsk.

Abstract:
This thesis is an analysis of the use of combined concepts of covenant and priesthood in some late Second Temple period Jewish and Jewish-Christian texts. In this thesis I investigate 1 and 2 Maccabees, Dead Sea Scrolls, and Hebrews, to see the various ways in which these Second Temple compositions have articulated the combined concepts of covenant and priesthood on the basis of their treatment of various biblical and extra-biblical traditions. The elaborate articulations of the combined concepts of covenant and priesthood in these texts partly reflect the concern of the Second Temple Jewish authors: how significant the priestly institutions and priesthood were, not only in terms of cultic matters, but also in terms of political and identity concerns. By means of this study, I hope to demonstrate that the combined concept of covenant and priesthood is necessary for a better understanding of some Second Temple texts.

Roux, Rowan Pieter. "Experiencing loss : traumatic memory and nostalgic longing in Anne Landsman's The Devil's Chimney and The Rowing Lesson, and Rachel Zadok's Gem Squash Tokoloshe." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1006854.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the experience of loss in Anne Landsman’s novels The Devil’s Chimney (1997) and The Rowing Lesson (2008), and Rachel Zadok’s Gem Squash Tokoloshe (2005). Positing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) as an impetus for emerging literary traditions within contemporary South African fiction, the argument begins by evaluating the reasons for the TRC’s widespread impact, and considers the role that the individual author may play within a culture which is undergoing dramatic socio-political upheavals. Through theoretical explication, close reading, and textual comparison, the argument initiates a dialogue between psychoanalysis and literary analysis, differentiating between two primary modes of experiencing loss, namely traumatic and nostalgic memory. Out of these sets of concerns, the thesis seeks to understand the inextricability of body, memory and landscape, and interrogates the deployment of these tropes within the contexts of traumatic and nostalgic loss, examining each author’s nuanced invocation. A central tenet of the argument is a consideration, moreover, of how the dialogic imagination has shaped storytelling, and whether or not narrative may provide therapeutic affect for either author or reader. The study concludes with an interpretation of the changing shape of literary expression within South Africa.

Abstract:
This dissertation examines Nadine Gordimer’s Burger’s Daughter, Rachel Zadok’s Gem Squash Tokoloshe, and Doris Lessing’s The Grass is Singing. It focuses on the development of each of the protagonists’ identities in three realms: the individual, the familial and the societal. Additionally, it is concerned with the specific socio-political contexts in which the novels are set. It employs psychoanalytic and historical materialist frameworks in order to engage with the disparate areas of identity with which it is concerned. The introduction establishes the analytical perspective of the dissertation and explores the network of theoretical frames on which the dissertation relies. Additionally, it contextualises each of the novels, within their historical contexts, as well as in relation to the theory. The first chapter examines Nadine Gordimer’s Burger’s Daughter. It focuses on the protagonist’s assertion of an identity independent of her father’s role as a political activist, and her eventual acceptance of the universal difficulty in negotiating a life which is both private and political. The second chapter, on Rachel Zadok’s Gem Squash Tokoloshe, examines the relationship between the protagonist’s traumatic experiences as a child and her inability to assert an identity as an adult. The similarities between the protagonist’s attempts to address her traumas and thereby create herself anew and South Africa’s employment of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission as a means to acknowledge and engage with its traumatic history is of import. The third chapter which deals with Doris Lessing’s The Grass is Singing traces the life of its protagonist, whose identifications remain childish as a result of having witnessed her parents’ difficult relationship. Her understanding of the world is informed by a rigid, binary understanding, which is ultimately disrupted by her relationship with a black employee. She is incapable of readjusting her frame of reference, however, and ultimately goes mad. I conclude that, while my focus has been on personal, familial and social identifications, the standard terms in which identity is examined, namely, race, class, and gender, are present in each of the three tiers of identity with which I have been concerned.

Furlong, Pierce James. "Aspects of ancient Near Eastern chronology (c. 1600-700 BC)." Melbourne, 2007. http://repository.unimelb.edu.au/10187/2096.

Full text
Abstract:
The chronology of the Late Bronze and Early Iron Age Near East is currently a topic of intense scholarly debate. The conventional/orthodox chronology for this period has been assembled over the past one-two centuries using information from King-lists, royal annals and administrative documents, primarily those from the Great Kingdoms of Egypt, Assyria and Babylonia. This major enterprise has resulted in what can best be described as an extremely complex but little understood jigsaw puzzle composed of a multiplicity of loosely connected data. I argue in my thesis that this conventional chronology is fundamentally wrong, and that Egyptian New Kingdom (Memphite) dates should be lowered by 200 years to match historical actuality. This chronological adjustment is achieved in two stages: first, the removal of precisely 85 years of absolute Assyrian chronology from between the reigns of Shalmaneser II and Ashur-dan II; and second, the downward displacement of Egyptian Memphite dates relative to LBA Assyrian chronology by a further 115 years. Moreover, I rely upon Kuhnian epistemology to structure this alternate chronology so as to make it methodologically superior to the conventional chronology in terms of historical accuracy, precision, consistency and testability.

Abstract:
The World Wide Web has been changing rapidly in the past few years due to the emergence and fast adoption of large variety of new internet-enabled devices: starting with web-enabled phones through converged appliances, combining a PDA and a cell phone, to specialized internet tablets and business productivity tools. This change is bringing many challenges into the process of designing and developing both the thin-client (web-based) and thick-client (device-hosted) applications and related services. The application and service providers are facing a trade-off between the number of platforms and devices they are able to support, representing the size of the potential market, and mounting costs tied to developing and supporting multiple variants of their applications. There are several ongoing efforts taking place at various standardization organizations and industry associations to address these issues. Some of the essential standards for specifying and transporting device capabilities have been available for several years now, but so far they have had only a limited impact on the way the actual applications and services are being designed and developed. This work is trying to identify and explain the shortcomings of the existing approaches and as a reaction proposes an application-centric framework designed...

Abstract:
Chapter 3 examines how confession evolved from the reign of Elizabeth through the end of the eighteenth century. The earlier insistence on universal confession remained an egalitarian disciplinary measure. But the Synod and the Senate could still really only go after those groups easiest to watch and those deemed most important to state security and good order: the military, the high-ranking clergy, and the nobility. At the same time, the ‘soft power’ of such holy hierarchs as Dimitrii of Rostov and Tikhon of Zadonsk played a key role in the process of reframing Orthodox Christianity as a moral teaching that could speak to the concerns of the worldly, educated noble and eventually the peasant. Confession in the second half of the eighteenth century became a part of the new ‘civic’ piety for the ‘enlightened’ elites—and, in the form of preparing for death, remained a part of tradition for those who largely ignored it.

Abstract:
The first published letters addressing the archbishop of Voronezh and Zadonsk Ignatiy (worldly name — Matvey Semyonov) from his contemporaries date back to 1842–1849 — the period of ministry of the bishop in the Don and Voronezh dioceses. In addition to information about various events, letters contain information about the relations between hierarchs, supported through the years by the relations of the teacher and the student, the godfather and the professed, fellow students at the academy or seminary. The correspondents of Archbishop Ignatius include Metropolitan Filaret (worldly name — Fyodor Amfiteatrov) and Philaret (worldly name — Vasily Drozdov) (both participated in the consecration of Archimandrite Ignatius to Bishop of Staraya Russa); Archbishop Saint Antoniy (worldly name — Avraamiy Smirnitskiy); Archbishop Grigoriy (worldly name — Georgiy Postnikov), who later became Metropolitan of Petersburg; as well as the former student of Ignatius at St. Petersburg Theological Academy — Arseniy (worldly name — Fyodor Moskvin), who later became Metropolitan of Kiev; Archbishop Iakov (worldly name — Iosif Vecherkov), etc. The introductory article to the published letters contains detailed biographical information compiled from archival and rare sources. The era, the place and the role of Eminent Ignatiy in church history arecharacterised in it, the circumstances accompanying the letters are clarified. The published epistolary documents are equipped with biographical references about the correspondents of Archbishop Ignatiy and with an extensive scientific commentary.

Abstract:
Abstract This section is generally regarded as the oldest core of the Rule. 4QSd provides clear evidence that one form of the Rule did not include parallels to 1QS 1–4. Also 4QSb,d did not include mention of the “sons of Zadok” corresponding to those in 1QS 5. This commentary argues that “sons of Zadok” was an honorary title for the members of the association, derived from Ezekiel 44. The expression is used similarly in the Damascus Document CD 3:21–4:4. The chapter goes on to discuss the provision for multiple settlements with a minimum of ten members and admission to the association, which has a striking parallel in Josephus’s account of the Essenes. The last part of this chapter (1QS 6:24–7:25) discusses the penal code of the association, which has significant parallels in the Damascus Document.

Abstract:
The object of the study was forest insects that live in the oak forests of Voronezh and the Voronezh region on the Quercus robur of early and late phenological forms. They belong to the order Hymenoptera, the suborder Apocrita, and the subfamily Cynipoidae. The analysis of the presence of various types of Cynipoidae and their association with a certain PHENOFORM in oak stands located directly in the city of Voronezh on Timiryazev and Moskovsky Prospekt streets, in the Shilovo and Zadonye microdistricts, as well as in the Semiluki nursery was carried out. Each type of Cynipoidae causes the formation of only its characteristic galls. Thanks to this, we were able to determine the presence of such types of Cynipoidae: Neuroterus numismalis, Cynips quercusfolii, Andricus inflator, Neuroterus quercusbaccarum. We have identified that the presence of these types of Cynipoidae differ in different oak stands of Voronezh region.
