Troulis, Emmanouil. "Effect of Z-Fiber® pinning on the mechanical properties of carbon fibre/epoxy composites." Thesis, Cranfield University, 2003. http://dspace.lib.cranfield.ac.uk/handle/1826/107.

Abstract:
This study investigates the effects of Z-pinning on the delamination performance in opening and shear loading modes in woven fabric reinforced / epoxy composite materials, as well as the effects of friction between specimen crack faces and the Z-pin failure mechanisms involved in mode II delamination. Mode I and mode II delamination tests are carried out on Z-pinned unidirectional (UD) and woven laminates. Both UD and woven laminates exhibit enhanced delamination resistance and crack propagation stability through Z-pinning. The effects of various structural and Z-pin parameters on the mode I and mode II delamination behaviour are separately assessed. The 4ENF testing configuration is deemed as the appropriate mode II configuration for the testing of Z-pinned laminates. A new basic friction rig is used to measure the friction coefficient between crack faces in woven laminates. An additional friction effect attributed to fibre architecture is identified. A specially designed delamination specimen is used to overcome the difficulty of accurately measuring crack propagation in Z-pinned woven fabric materials and aid data reduction using the available analytical methods. The failure mechanisms involved in the mode II delamination of Z-pinned laminates have been investigated with the implementation of a new test. Z-pins fail under shear loading through a combination of resin crushing, laminate fibre breakage, pin shear, pin bending and pin pullout. The balance of the failure mechanisms is shown to be a function of the crack opening constraint, material type, stacking sequence, Z-pin angle and insertion depth to Z-pin diameter ratio. Z-pin and material parameters influencing Z-pinning quality are identified, categorised and quantified. The importance of controlling Z-pin insertion depth is underlined and updated manufacturing procedures are proposed. Partial pinning appears as an advantageous alternative. A reduction in in-plane stiffness and in-plane strength in UD and woven fabric composites is measured, whilst no significant change of in-plane shear stiffness of UD materials is observed. A reduction in the fibre volume fraction is the single most important parameter affecting the in-plane stiffness. The performance of a Z-pinned sub-structural component is investigated. Enhanced loading carrying capacity and damage tolerance is achieved through Z-pinning.

Abstract:
Z-pinning is a through-thickness reinforcement technology for polymer composite materials that has been developed and commercialised over the past fifteen years. The through-thickness reinforcement of composites with thin metallic or fibrous pins aids in suppressing delamination, improving impact damage tolerance and increasing joint strength. Z-pins are applied to the composite part during its manufacture. Pins are embedded within sheets of foam and placed over the unconsolidated part. Subsequently, the foam is compacted and the pins transferred into the part, which is usually an uncured prepreg. In this manner, large numbers of pins can be inserted quickly and easily. The pinned composite is then cured using conventional processes. The use of z-pins is currently limited to several high performance composite structures, most notably Formula One racing cars and F/A-18 E/F (Superhornet) fighter aircraft, although the technology has potential applications in a d iverse variety of aerospace and non-aerospace composite structures. A limited understanding of the mechanical performance of z-pinned parts under high load and fatigue loading conditions currently hinders the application of z-pinned composites. The aim of this PhD project is to investigate the mechanical properties, strengthening mechanics and failure mechanisms of z-pinned carbon/epoxy laminates and joints. The effect of z-pin reinforcement on the tensile and flexural properties of laminates under monotonic and fatigue loading is studied. The sensitivity of these properties to the volume content and diameter of the z-pins is systematically studied by experimentation and analytical modelling. This PhD also evaluates the efficacy of z-pins in improving the load-bearing properties of carbon/epoxy lap joints. Improvements to the room temperature and elevated temperature properties of z-pinned lap joints under monotonic and fatigue tensile loading were determined. The effect of strain rate on the load-bearing properties of z-pinned lap joints was also evaluated. A further aim of the PhD project was to assess the z-pin manufacturing process and the microstructural damage caused by that process. The outcome of this study augments the analysis of the me chanical properties of z-pinned laminates and joints.

Abstract:
Effective treatment of carbon fiber components to improve delamination resistance is vital to the application of such materials since delamination is one of the biggest concerns regarding the use of composites in the aerospace sector. Due to the significant application benefit gained from increased stiffness to density ratio with composite materials, innovative developments resulting in improved through-thickness strength have been on the rise. The inherent anisotropy of composite materials results in an added difficulty in designing structural elements that make use of such materials. Proposed techniques to improve the through-thickness strength of laminar composites are many and varied; however all share the common goal of improving inter-laminar bond strength. This research makes use of novel materials in the field of wet flocking and Z-pinning. Cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) have already demonstrated excellent mechanical properties in terms of stiffness and strength, originating at the nano-scale. These materials were introduced into the laminate while in a sol-gel suspension in an effort to improve load transfer between laminate layers. The effect of CNFs as lightweight renewable reinforcement for CFRPs will be investigated. Carbon nanotube (CNT) additives were also considered for their beneficial structural properties.

Abstract:
In this dissertation, we proposed a method that combines the Z-scan technique and the white-light continuum generated by a photonic crystal fiber to characterize the nonlinear spectrum of materials. The nonlinear spectrum provides crucial information on the characteristic, the origin and the potential of the nonlinearity for devices application. In this sense, the white-light continuum allied to the Z-scan technique allows fast spectra determination in a broad spectral range. In this work, the white light was generated in a commercial photonic crystal fiber pumped by femtosecond pulses from a Ti:sapphire laser oscillator. Both the femtosecond lasers and the photonic crystal fibers are becoming more accessible. In addition, the Z-scan technique is a well-known method for nonlinearities determination due to its simplicity and precision. In this way, we merged these advantages to make a simple, compact and low-cost apparatus for studying nonlinear samples. In general, the nonlinear spectrum determination requires complex laser systems which are able to tune the wavelength. The white-light Z-scan method we developed here was used to measure the nonlinear spectrum of disperse red 13 (DR13) dye in methanol. This dye presents a well-characterized absorcive nonlinear effect (saturable absorption), being a good material not only to calibrate, but also to test our experimental setup. The experimental results confirmed the viability of the setup for characterizing samples with strong nonlinear absorption effect.

In the past, my work was focused on transferring the flat visual element into the space. I turn away from this concept, because as my Master's thesis I chose a Labyrinth. A labyrinth is not primary flat visual element. My final work is free artistic interpretation of this theme. My work based on classical craftsmanship techniques, which I am using in the new way in my work. I understood this theme labyrinth as an something very personal and individual. Because of this, I decide to create sculpture which will fit in to the gallery space and also the space of everyday life. My expression of the Labyrinth has cube shape. The entire sculpture is stitched inside, this stitch create the inside space. In one way this inner space is open and we are free to look inside, in the other hand center of the sculpture is hidden. I want to express a feeling of secrecy, and create tension between outside and inside space of the sculpture.

This diploma thesis deals with the separation of aerosol particles on membranes from polypropylene hollow fibers. As a source of particles, a desktop 3D printer using polymer filaments was used. Filtration efficiency and a pressure drop on a hollow polypropylene fiber membrane and a high efficiency particulate filter (HEPA filter) were monitored during filtration of particles from 3D print using filaments of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, acrylonitrile styrene acrylate, polylactic acid and polyethylene terephthalate glycol at nearly the same air flow. The results achieved by both filer media are then compared and discussed. The results show that the hollow fiber membrane achieves better filtration efficiency at higher particle concentrations, while using the less emitting materials, the efficiency of the HEPA filter was higher or the same. The total filtration efficiency calculated from all experiments with all filaments was higher for the hollow fiber membrane with higher pressure drop at the same time.

Abstract:

Klaavuniemi, T. (Tuula). "PDZ-LIM domain proteins and α-actinin at the muscle Z-disk." Doctoral thesis, University of Oulu, 2006. http://urn.fi/urn:isbn:9514282647.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The Z-disk is a sophisticated structure that connects adjacent sarcomeres in striated muscle myofibrils. α-Actinin provides strength to the Z-disks by crosslinking the actin filaments of adjacent sarcomeres. α-Actinin is an antiparallel homodimer, composed of an N-terminal actin binding domain (ABD), the central rod domain, and two pairs of C-terminal EF-hands. The PDZ-LIM domain proteins interact with α-actinin at the Z-disk. Of these proteins, only the actinin-associated LIM protein (ALP), Z-band alternatively spliced PDZ-containing protein (ZASP/Cypher) and C-terminal LIM protein (CLP36) have a ZASP/Cypher-like (ZM) motif consisting of 26-27 conserved residues in the internal region between the PDZ and LIM domains. The aim of this work was to understand the molecular interplay between the ZM-motif containing members of the PDZ-LIM proteins and α-actinin. To unveil the biological relevance of the interaction between the PDZ-LIM proteins and α-actinin, naturally occurring human ZASP/Cypher mutations were analyzed. Two interaction sites were found between ALP, CLP36 and α-actinin using recombinant purified proteins in surface plasmon resonance (SPR) analysis. The PDZ domain of ALP and CLP36 recognized the C-terminus of α-actinin, whereas the internal regions bound to the rod domain. Further characterization showed that the ALP internal region adopts and extended conformation when interacting with α-actinin and that the ZM-motif partly mediated the interaction, but did not define the entire interaction area. ZASP/Cypher also interacted and competed with ALP in binding to the rod domain. The internal fragments containing the ZM-motif were important for co-localization of ALP and ZASP/Cypher with α-actinin at the Z-disks and on stress fibers. The absence of ALP and ZASP/Cypher in focal contacts indicates that other interacting molecules, for instance vinculin and integrin, may compete in binding to the rod in these areas or additional proteins are required in targeting to these locations. The co-localization of the ZASP/Cypher with α-actinin could be released by disrupting the stress fibers leading to an accumulation of α-actinin in the cell periphery, whereas ZASP/Cypher was not in these areas. This suggests that an intact cytoskeleton is important for ZASP/Cypher interaction with α-actinin. Earlier studies have shown that mutations in the ZASP/Cypher internal region are associated with muscular diseases. These mutations, however, did not affect ZASP/Cypher co-localization with α-actinin or the stability of ZASP/Cypher proteins. The Z-disk possesses a stretch sensor, which is involved in triggering hypertrophic growth as a compensatory mechanism to increased workloads. α-Actinin is a docking site of molecules that are involved in hypertrophic signaling cascades mediated by calsarcin-calcineurin and protein kinase C (PKC) isoforms. The internal interaction site may be involved in targeting PKCs, which bind to the LIM domains of ZASP/Cypher, to the Z-disks. The similar location of the internal interaction site with calsarcin on the rod suggests that ZASP/Cypher, ALP and CLP36 may regulate calsarcin-mediated hypertrophic signaling.

Bishop, Derron L. "Alterations in Z-line thickness following fast motoneuron transplantation onto slow twitch skeletal muscle fibers." Virtual Press, 1995. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/935926.

Full text
Abstract:
Differentiation of skeletal muscle fibers into fast and slow twitch appears to be under control of the stimulation pattern imparted by motoneurons innervating these muscle fibers. Fast twitch muscle fibers receive intense stimulation for brief periods of time while slow twitch muscle fibers receive less intense stimulation for much longer periods of time. This study examined thickness of Zlines in dually innervated skeletal muscle fibers of slow twitch soleus muscle following transplantation of the fast extensor digitorum longus (EDL) nerve onto the surface of the soleus. Eight individual dually innervated fibers were dissected from four transplanted mouse soleus muscles and examined with a transmission electron microscope. Z-lines in these dually innervated fibers were thinner (mean = 83 nm) than control soleus (mean = 123 nm) and thicker than control EDL (mean = 57 nm). A significant difference (p< .002) was also found between Z-line thickness near the foreign EDL endplate (mean = 81 nm) versus the original soleus endplate (mean = 85 nm). These results suggest the factors controlling protein synthesis in skeletal muscle fibers have both a global and localized effect.

Následne boli zvláknené polymérne zmesi na báze PHB s rôznym zložením, čo umožnilo štúdium vplyvu PLA, zmäkčovadiel a ich množstva na vlastnosti pripravených vlákien. Boli použité tri komerčné zmäkčovadlá (ATBC, PEG, A6) a dva experimentálne syntetizované. Vlákna obsahujúce A6 vykazovali najvyššiu pevnosť v ťahu (250 MPa) a modul pružnosti (2,7 GPa). Nakoniec bol skúmaný vplyv starnutia, tepla a vriacej vody na mechanické vlastnosti týchto vlákien.

This research probes into the optic communication industry in current and the trend it towards. Furthermore, the competition strategy will also be analyzed thoroughly. Optic communication used to entitled as a leading role for future Taiwan Industry development. However, is has undergone a tremendous hit by the “dot com” crash in 2000. The world-wide tele-communication companies have amended their development plans on constructions and in building the relevant network communication facility. It therefore cut down the need and depressed the ongoing constructions. The situation has been changed in 2002, the FTTH construction plans held by Japanese government encouraged and lifted the world-wide demand for optic communication equipments and related components. Due to the orders placed to Taiwan manufactures through clients in Japan, the optic communication companies in Taiwan finally have stepped out of the past, started to better run their business and enormously benefits our optic communication Industry. This research namely analyzes Taiwan’s competitive advantage of nation in Optic communication Industry in terms of the analysis. Computer simulation is used to study the ability of a proposed silicon-scintillating fiber tracking system for SDC to correctly interpret $Z\sp\prime\to e\sp+e\sp-$ events. Two versions of the Lund Monte Carlo model for inelastic non-diffractive events are compared to existing data and then evaluated at $\sqrt{s}=40$ TeV. We use the two versions to generate the associated particles in $Z\sp\prime\to e\sp+e\sp-$ events and find that the predicted occupancy in the proposed tracking system varies by $\approx$50% between the two versions. The tracking system is able to reconstruct the $e\sp+e\sp-$ tracks with nearly 100% efficiency in either case. We find that the leptonic asymmetry, $A\sb{fb}$ can be accurately measured for $.5\le M\sb{Z\sp\prime}\le 7$ TeV.

Abstract:
Optics are a powerful probe of chemical structure that can often be linked to theoretical predictions, providing robustness as a measurement tool. Not only do optical interactions like second harmonic generation (SHG), single and two-photon excited fluorescence (TPEF), and infrared absorption provide chemical specificity at the molecular and macromolecular scale, but the ability to image enables mapping heterogeneous behavior across complex systems such as biological tissue. This thesis will discuss nonlinear and linear optics, leveraging theoretical predictions to provide frameworks for interpreting analytical measurement. In turn, the causal mechanistic understanding provided by these frameworks will enable structurally specific quantitative tools with a special emphasis on application in biological imaging. The thesis will begin with an introduction to 2nd order nonlinear optics and the polarization analysis thereof, covering both the Jones framework for polarization analysis and the design of experiment. Novel experimental architectures aimed at reducing 1/f noise in polarization analysis will be discussed, leveraging both rapid modulation in time through electro-optic modulators (Chapter 2), as well as fixed-optic spatial modulation approaches (Chapter 3). In addition, challenges in polarization-dependent imaging within turbid systems will be addressed with the discussion of a theoretical framework to model SHG occurring from unpolarized light (Chapter 4). The application of this framework to thick tissue imaging for analysis of collagen local structure can provide a method for characterizing changes in tissue morphology associated with some common cancers (Chapter 5). In addition to discussion of nonlinear optical phenomena, a novel mechanism for electric dipole allowed fluorescence-detected circular dichroism will be introduced (Chapter 6). Tackling challenges associated with label-free chemically specific imaging, the construction of a novel infrared hyperspectral microscope for chemical classification in complex mixtures will be presented (Chapter 7). The thesis will conclude with a discussion of the inherent disadvantages in taking the traditional paradigm of modeling and measuring chemistry separately and provide the multi-agent consensus equilibrium (MACE) framework as an alternative to the classic meet-in-the-middle approach (Chapter 8). Spanning topics from pure theoretical descriptions of light-matter interaction to full experimental work, this thesis aims to unify these two fronts.
