Abstract:
The 2.6 Å (1 Å=0.1 nm) resolution structure has been determined for the glycosylated Fab (fragment antigen binding) of an IgM (Yvo) obtained from a subject with Waldenström's macroglobulinaemia. Dynamic light scattering was used to estimate the gel point and monitor the formation of an ordered hydroscopic gel of Yvo IgM upon cooling. If a cryoglobulin forms gels in peripheral tissues and organs, the associated swelling and damage to microvasculature can result in considerable morbidity and mortality. The three-dimensional structure of the branched N-linked oligosaccharide associated with the CH1 domain (first constant domain of heavy chain) is reported. The carbohydrate may act to shield part of the lateral surface of the CH1 domain and crowd the junction between the CH1 and CH2 domains, thereby limiting the segmental flexibility of the Fab arms in intact Yvo IgM, especially at low temperatures. Recently, Yvo IgM was shown to have the properties of a naturally occurring proteolytic antibody [Paul, Karle, Planque, Taguchi, Salas, Nishiyama, Handy, Hunter, Edmundson and Hanson (2004) J. Biol. Chem. 279, 39611–39619; Planque, Bangale, Song, Karle, Taguchi, Poindexter, Bick, Edmundson, Nishiyama and Paul (2004) J. Biol Chem. 279, 14024–14032]. The Yvo protein displayed the ability to cleave, by a nucleophilic mechanism, the amide bonds of a variety of serine protease substrates and the gp120 coat protein of HIV. An atypical serine, arginine and glutamate motif is located in the middle of the Yvo antigen-binding site and displays an overall geometry that mimics the classical serine, histidine and aspartate catalytic triad of serine proteases. Our present findings indicate that pre-existing or natural antibodies can utilize at least one novel strategy for the cleavage of peptide bonds.

Abstract:
We investigate the Ti and V K edge resonant X-ray scattering spectra in YTiO 3 and YVO 3 by using ab initio band structure calculation based on the local density approximation. The calculated spectra show good agreement with recent experiments, although the effect of the orbital ordering is neglected, while that of the lattice distortion is taken into account in the calculation. Particularly, the observed drastic change of the spectra for the (100) reflection between the low temperature and intermediate temperature phases of YVO 3 is nicely explained by the difference of the Jahn–Teller distortion between the two phases. These results cast doubt on an assertion that the resonant X-ray scattering is a direct observation of the orbital order in YTiO 3 and YVO 3.

YVO 4:Dy 3+ nanorods were synthesized via a solvothermal route at 150°C. The as-prepared products were investigated using the X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The results showed that the average particle sizes of these nanorods are from 20 to 600 nm. The photoluminescence (PL) measurements showed that these nanorods exhibited improved photoluminescence compared with YVO 4:Dy 3+ irregular nanoparticles. It is found that the appropriate calcinations temperature is helpful to improve the yellow emission.

Abstract:
Surface morphology and crystallinity of YVO 4: Sm 3+ thin films have an influence on the photoluminescence characteristics. The YVO 4: Sm 3+ films have been deposited on Al 2 O 3 (0001) substrates using pulsed laser deposition method. The films were grown at the various substrate temperatures changing from 500 to 700°C. The crystallinity and surface morphology of the films were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), respectively. The results of XRD showed that YVO 4: Sm 3+ films had a zircon structure and AFM study revealed that the films consisted of homogeneous grains ranging from 100 to 400 nm depending on the deposition conditions. The photoluminescence spectra were measured at room temperature and the emitted radiation was dominated by the red emission peak at 620 nm radiated from the transition of 5 D 0-7 F 2. The crystallinity, surface morphology, and photoluminescence spectra of thin-film phosphors were highly dependent on the substrate temperature. The surface roughness and photoluminescence intensity of the films showed similar behavior as a function of substrate temperature.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Bacterial cellulose membranes were prepared containing upconverting nanoparticles of YVO4:Yb3+:Er3+/Ho3+ and a photosensitizer, Aluminum phthalocyanine chloride (AlClPc). The membranes were tested aiming applications as sensitizers in photoactivated processes (photodynamic therapy - PDT). The development of this new biomaterial was based on the purpose of applying these membranes topically over the area to be treated to release of the photosensitizer and its activation will occur locally under infrared light, that will be converted in visible light by upconverting nanoparticles. Emission properties have been optimized and the material with composition (mol%) YVO4:Yb3+:Ho3+ (79:20:1) showed up adequate with highest emission at the spectral region of absorption/excitation of the photoactive (630- 690nm). BC membranes production have also been optimized regarding thickness and optical transmission. Results showed that the incorporation of the photoactive molecules together with the upconverting nanoparticles is feasible. The photoactive incorporation efficiency was studied. Thinner membranes lead to higher relative efficiencies. Skin permeation and retention in vitro tests have been performed by using Franz cells and pigs ears as skin models. After 6, 12 and 24 hours, AlClPc was retained at the stratum corneum (0.5 g.cm-2) and dermis/epidermis (0.3 g.cm-2). The release system developed here presents potential for topical administration without possibility of systemic absorption that could lead to generalized photosensitization of the patient. The photosensitization through the visible upconverted emission of the nanoparticles under infrared excitation was observed. The 680 nm emission of the AlClPc together with the suppression of the red emission of the nanoparticles were clear evidence of the energy transfer process. Moreover the photophysical properties were evaluated at 1270 nm. The AlClPc oxygen generation was observed in the new...

Chopra, Deepta, Devanik Saha, Luize Guimarães, Lucia Bernadete, and Kerry Selvestre. The case of MUVA Assistentes: Moving Beyond Income Generation to a New Approach Towards Achieving Women’s Empowerment. Institute of Development Studies, March 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/muva.2023.002.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper highlights the case of MUVA Assistentes, a public works programme (PWP) that provided training and mentoring to young vulnerable women (YVW) in urban Mozambique. Our paper draws out the main learnings from the MUVA Assistentes project to inform the design of other PWPs that have women’s empowerment as their major aim. We show through our analysis that it is possible for PWPs to achieve women’s empowerment, but only if they go beyond a sole focus on income provision through paid work to women. Instead, we argue that if PWPs formulate their theory of change in line with Kabeer (1999)’s notion of empowerment, with its three interrelated dimensions (resources, agency and achievements), women’s empowerment through PWPs can be both realistic and long-lasting. PWPs have always been popular in low- and middle-income countries as tools for poverty alleviation and mitigating high unemployment rates among young people. Given the disproportionate impact of poverty on women and girls, many existing PWPs often include a ‘gender’ component in their theories of change. A common limitation of such PWPs and theories of change is their overarching focus on providing income opportunities, which they suggest leads to women’s empowerment. However, this has not been the case for most PWPs; hence, learnings from a project that has led to substantive empowerment of young women are highly valuable. The MUVA Assistentes project was a component of the broader MUVA Programme running in urban Mozambique. It provided training to YVW and gave them paid work as classroom assistants in primary schools for one academic year. The project addressed two major problems plaguing Mozambique today: (1) high unemployment among urban young people, especially women; and (2) poor educational outcomes among primary school students. Through a dedicated focus on mentoring the participants, the project supported these women to build soft assets and skills to enable them to realise their future goals and aspirations. This paper highlights that the MUVA Assistentes project led to three major outcomes: (1) building technical skills; (2) improving opportunities for women’s employability in the labour market (while improving public goods); and (3) building soft assets through training and mentoring. Through a close discussion of the experiences of four women participants, we find that the MUVA Assistentes led to an increase not only in income opportunities for YVW, but also in their sense of self‑worth and confidence to exercise their agency in achieving their goals. Further, the project also provided a critical public good by working towards improving the quality of classroom outcomes in government primary schools. We conclude that through building these skills and increasing women participants’ self-worth, PWPs can build women’s resources, agency and achievements, thereby moving closer to achieving a holistic view of empowerment, which encouragingly extends beyond the PWPs’ duration as well.

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: To identify empirical studies that measured the feasibility and effect of computer-based executive function stimulation and rehabilitation programs in the young and middle adult population. Background: Reviews that evaluate the effectiveness of computerized cognitive training programs on executive functions in different population groups have shown contradictory results, to a certain extent associated with the methodological characteristics of said studies (Gates et al., 2019; 2020); most of them These reviews have focused on older adults (Ten Brinke et al., 2020; Yoo et al., 2015) with stroke sequelae, and adults with cognitive impairment. These studies have found improvements in general cognitive function in older adults (Ten Brinke et al., 2020); however, the effect on executive functions have not been studied. Only one review was carried out on the average adult (Gates et al., 2019); the authors restricted the search to interventions with more than 12 weeks and only found one article with eligibility criteria. Their work concluded that computerized cognitive training in midlife demonstrated lasting effects on general cognitive function after 12 weeks of training and on memory after 24 weeks of training.
