Abstract:

Abstract:
This study examined truant youth's and non-truant youth's attitude toward their parents. The hypothesis stated there will be no statistical significant relationship between truant youth's and non-truant youth's attitude toward their parents. The sample of 30 male youths between the ages of 13 and 18 was taken from the Fulton County Juvenile Court and the YMCA of Metro Atlanta. The researcher used a 25 question instrument called the Child's Attitude Toward Father and Mother Scale to measure truant youth's and non-truant youth's attitude toward their parents. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used for data analysis. The data was analyzed using frequencies, descriptive analysis, and Chi-square. Comparing truant youths and non-truant youths, using Chi-square, indicated that all of the differences between the two groups were not statistically significant. The researcher found that truant youths and non-truant youths did not differ significantly in their attitudes toward their parents. The conclusions drawn from the findings suggest that a youth's attitude toward their parents may not impact their school attendance.

Abstract:
This work was developed within the methodological guidelines of a qualitative case study, having as its object the Gabriel Prestes Fanfare - FAGAP - from the city of Lorena, located in the Vale do Paraíba Paulista region. The onset of the research involved getting to know how the fanfare space interferes with its participants by means of a long, effective immersion in the fieldwork. The adopted research plan was developed in such a way as to simultaneously follow two analytical axes on the object of the thesis: a diachronical one and a synchronical one. The diachronical axis enabled studying the group within an historical frame of reference of fanfares as well as FAGAP itself, while the synchronical axis dealt with current circumstances. Crossing these two axes made it possible to delineate a configuration of FAGAP and to analyze the characteristics it shares with other musical groups, as well as to focus on its peculiarities. Adopting such a methodological design proved possible to do away with an investigative perspective focused solely on the present situation of the group being studied, as well as to recover practices, contexts and traditions which help approach the group in its everyday life. The data collected in the historical research and those collected in the fieldwork produced a dense body of knowledge which was critically analyzed in the light of authors who study representations and cultures, particularly Jean Claude Abric, Iuri Lotman and Bruno Latour. By confronting the history of fanfares to that of FAGAP itself, the data show how fanfares have survived cultural changes and resisted the threat of extinction, becoming an educational space for youths.

Abstract:
This study describes how young people communicate and present themselves on Facebook. The aim is to investigate the identities created on Facebook and on Facebook influence young people's identity work. I have been studying and observed a group of youths on Facebook aged 11-23. Based on the concept of identity I have, among other things, studied the group based on theories of how we all play theater and appearing in different roles and social interaction on Facebook. I have also taken note of research on youth culture and group identity and how it manipulates young people and communicate with different symbols. The results show the emergence of genres on Facebook where users appear in different identities. These are emerging in various ways and to different degrees, and have been compiled using various tools available on Facebook. It also emerges that this affects the youth's identity work

Abstract:
Thousands of youth exit Ontario's Child Welfare System (CWS) each year and perform poorly after returning to the community. However, understanding African Canadian youths' perspectives about their experiences and needs was problematic because no outcome data was available in the Canadian database. Using a phenomenological design grounded in a constructivist framework, the purpose of this study was to explore the meaning(s) that African Canadian youth ascribed to positive outcomes on exiting the CWS. A purposeful sample included 10 participants (6 females and 4 males, ranging in age from 19-24). The data collection method was face-to-face interviews with hand coding used to transcribe the data. Inductive analysis of themes and member checking ensured the trustworthiness of the interpretations. The 9 resulting themes related to concerns about their stay in care, as well as readiness for exiting CWS successfully: in-care instability (multiple foster homes and changes), unpreparedness for the transition, counselling/lack of counselling, behavioral management, education, maintaining motivation homelessness, shelter living, extended care connections, Extended Care and Maintenance (ECM), and Youth Voice in decision making. These themes represented issues that African Canadian youth believed would improve transitioning from CWS to independent living, particularly in negotiating community connections and resources. Social change can occur when policy makers and stakeholders acknowledge the problems and special needs of these youth by implementing the resources, services, and supportive programs to assure continuity of care and more successful outcomes.

Abstract:
Criminality can have serious and numerous effects of both individuals and society and why youths engage in criminal actions is a question concerning several instances. In this study we investigate possible factors that influence criminality among youths by analyzing a self-survey questionnaire. To identify the factors the technique of exploratory factor analysis is used. The relationships between the factors and criminality are then assessed with a structural equation model. The objective is also to investigate if the factors relate differently to criminality depending on gender why the structural equation model is performed on males and females separately. From the analysis we identified seven factors. Four of them seem to have an impact on youths’ criminal behavior; criminality among friends, attitudes towards severe crimes, relationships to friends and exposure and participation in negative social behavior. For the other three factors (school performance, family relations and attitude towards illicit actions) we found no clear relationship to criminal behavior. The results also indicate that criminality among friends influence males to a larger degree than females. Whereas the relationship between criminal behavior and exposure and participation in negative social behavior is stronger for females than males. For the other factors no major differences between male and females can be distinguished. The overall picture produced by the analysis suggest that the influences of the identified factors on criminality are quite modest and that the patterns for males and females are quite similar.

Mhazo, Tafadzwa Simphorosa. "Youths Unemployment and Alternative Strategies for Survival." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/76718.

Full text
Abstract:
Youth unemployment is a global problem, which has drawn much scholarly attention because of its complex dynamics within different regions and countries. Two common solutions suggested to tackle youth unemployment in African countries are investing in improved quality of tertiary education, and channelling investments to the agricultural sector in order for it to employ youths. This study examines the problem of youth unemployment in Bulawayo, examining the causes, the survival strategies of unemployed youths, and the sustainability of these strategies. It also explores the possibility of absorbing educated youth into agriculture. The study adopted a qualitative case study, focusing on 30 graduate youths in the City of Bulawayo. Young graduates were interviewed utilising a semi structured interview technique. The study found that educated youths in Bulawayo have found it difficult to get jobs in the city and were considering options outside the city. The study also showed that young graduates still consider formal employment as key to livelihoods. The youths also understood what they meant by employment, and did not consider activities in the informal sector or agriculture as employment. In fact, the young graduates had a negative perception of agriculture and preferred informal sector activities to agriculture. As such, the majority of young graduates had found solace in the informal sector, and where involved in a range of activities to survive. The conclusion reached by this dissertation is that young people have used their agency to navigate economic difficulties in a city that cannot provide them with sustainable livelihoods, due to neglect and a failing economy. While there is a gap between their education , training and the prevailing industrial needs, agriculture cannot effectively solve the young people’s problems. Young people require occupations that offer dignity and status, and sustainable livelihoods, and agriculture cannot provide any of these. This has left young people surviving on the underground economy, which although less sustainable than formal employment, can give them the dignity and financial returns.

Abstract:
Children with intellectual disabilities often struggle with reading, and traditional ways of learning can be frustrating and difficult. This thesis investigates the ability to adapt gaming as a more creative and engaging way for these children to practice sentence structure and reading comprehension. The result is a prototype that makes use of reading scenes mixed with interactive scenes where the user gets to build sentences through different game mechanics such as drag & drop, marking of words and point & click. Depending on what sentence is built, the story changes. The overall evaluation feedback of this prototype is positive and that it has potential but would require further work since reading is a complex activity and the reading levels of children with special needs are very individual.

Abstract:
The first chapter assesses the impact of the cohort size on labour market outcomes. Using exogenous variation and micro-level data for France, the UK and the US, we study the effect of supply shocks measured at different ages on unemployment rates and wages during a cohort's life cycle. The results from an IV estimation show that the largest magnitude of the effects is found when the cohort size is measured at age 25. The impact of both wages and unemployment rates are temporary, however, both decreasing with time. The second chapter analyses the effects of large inflows of foreign students on English undergraduates. Our results confirm previous findings that there is no overall effect, but we identify changes in the distribution of natives. We find that top performing English students are crowded in by foreign students. It is also mainly English-born males, natives who do not have English as their mother tongue and those of Asian ethnic origins that are crowded in by foreign students. In chapter three, we aim to understand the short-term effects of changes in the level of the tuition fees charged by English universities on students' geographic mobility. Our results suggest that the increase in tuition fees in 2006/07 charged by English universities led students to enrol into universities that are closer to home, with a larger effect experienced by men and White students. Moreover, we find that students are less likely to move to universities located in rich areas.

Abstract:
This study examined the aspirations formation of disadvantaged Jamaican male youths. The design of the study was a Type 3 holistic design which considered the global nature of multiple cases, and focused on the impact of work, family, school, peers and siblings on subjects1 aspirations. Six case studies were conducted using observations, focus groups, taped interviews and document inspection techniques. Data were analyzed using McCraken's coding techniques. The results showed that the youths' aspirations were leveled, reflected realities f their employment possibilities, and were patterned after their father's occupations. The youths' reluctance to raise their aspirations signals the need for Jamaican policy makers to address the problems caused by low aspirations among youths. Recommendations for further research are offered.

This study is located between the contradiction that youth is politically disinterested and that youth is very much politically engaged. Some scholars have argued that youth political disinterest is a threat to the life of the traditional public sphere and democracy. Against the notion of the youth's disinterest and disaffection from politics, this study points out the deficit in exploratory studies that examine and explore the relationship between young people and their political participation both in the on/offline context. In light of the contradiction as well, this current study asked the following question: how does a group of South African youth use social media to participate in the virtual public sphere? Also, what are the views of a group of South African youth about political participation (via their use of traditional and new/social media)?

Abstract:
The focus of this study was the experience of students who had successfully achieved the transition from foster care to enrollment in Virginia Community Colleges. The following questions guided the inquiry: How do students who are emancipating from foster care describe their transition to enrollment at one of the Virginia Community Colleges? What challenges do students who are emancipating from foster care face in the transition to college? What types of support do these students require to successfully transition to college?;This study used a qualitative approach to examine the transition from care of emancipated foster youth to post-secondary education. Narrative responses from semi-structured interviews with emancipating youth now enrolled in a Virginia community college provided insight into their transition from care to enrollment in college. Twelve students aged 19 to 21, participated in this study. Ethnicity of participants included one biracial student, five Caucasian students, and six Black students. Findings from the study showed the importance of the influence of a single secondary educator in each participant's experience, the importance of financial assistance, and the importance of campus/institutional support on college choice and transition from high school to college. Participants were challenged by their lack of academic preparation, lack of family privilege, and lack of understanding of the norms of college.;Keywords: college transition, foster care, college students, community college.

Abstract:
This study explores youth's perceptions and understanding of the social phenomenon of drugs in our society. Sixty-four students (32 fourth graders and 32 eleventh graders), selected from schools in the Portland Public School District participated individually in a one hour interview where they responded to open ended questions that probed for their perceptions of drug use. Participants were also asked to describe their feelings regarding anti-drug messages they view in the media and their comments regarding the "Just Say NO" program. The tape-recorded interviews were transcribed and half were used to develop a code that captured recurring themes in the data. Using the code book, five trained individuals coded the 64 transcripts. Reliability, assessed by computing Cohen's Kappa on half the interviews, ranged from .62 to .75, with an average reliability of .69. Seventeen themes derived from the content analysis were discussed which confirm the dramatic impact the peer group has on drug use as well as demonstrate age differences associated with perceptions of anti-drug messages. One hundred percent of the participants noted that there are peer influences promoting drug use. Eleventh graders were more likely than fourth graders to note that drugs are used as a means to escape, overcome constraints or for pleasurable stimulation. Fourth graders were more positive in their responses to the anti-drug commercials and the "Just Say NO" campaign. This research provides information regarding the perceptions of young people that can potentially broaden the dialogue of program planners as well as increase the effectiveness of anti-drug programs and messages.

Symonds, Lindsay. "Youth's acceptance of mobile phone text messaging for STI health promotion." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/44181.

Full text
Abstract:
Objectives: The objective of this study was to assess youths’ readiness to receive sexually transmitted infection (STI) sexual health promotion Short Message Services (SMS) (or text messages) from a public health nurse. Methods: An anonymous survey was given to youth aged 16 to 25 in a metropolitan Canadian city in 2 different areas: (1) youth attending two drop-in public health run sexual health youth clinics; and (2) youth at a campus of a large urban university. Results: One hundred and sixty six (n= 166) youth responded to the survey, of which 98% owned a mobile phone and 73% preferred sending and receiving SMS on their phones compared to other modes of communication. The youth in this study still expressed a desire for face-to-face interaction with a nurse for notifications of STI results (56%) or for asking sexual health questions (55%). There was preference for SMS from a nurse for reminders to wear condoms (31%) or reminders to call the nurse/clinic (40%). The youth overall agreed that SMS would provide a continued link between the nurse and themselves (60%) and the ability to use SMS would make it more likely for them to contact the nurse for a question or concern (78%). Conclusion: Youth are using SMS on their mobile phones at very high rates. There is general acceptance for SMS sent from a public health nurse in the form of reminders for condom use and for contacting a nurse/clinic, however the youth also indicated preference for face-to-face communication for more personal communications such as notification of STI results.

Abstract:
Nowadays, online activities are a significant part of teenagers' daily lives worldwide. Increasing local news reports on cyberbullying have raised public concern. Previous studies of cyberbullying in Chinese contexts are limited in scope and number. This thesis seeks to understand, cyberbullying among young people in Chinese society. It is hoped that the findings can lead to more service initiatives enabling young people to live better in a world where cyberbullying exists. A mixed method research design from an ecological systems perspective was applied to collect both qualitative and quantitative data for analysis. In this study, cyberbullying case interviews were conducted. Three stages and ten common types of cyberbullying were identified. The escalation of cyberbullying was illustrated to show the development of conflict. Characteristics of cyberbullying, such as privacy, digital tracking, identity, playfulness, and role diffusion were discussed. The findings showed that cyberbullying had actual impact on the life and behaviour of young people. A cyberbullying behaviour checklist was developed informed by the case study and literature to measure the cyberbullying prevalence rate. A survey of 2,185 young people form Hong Kong, Macao and Guangzhou was completed in 2016. Considerable cyberbullying was observed, with a prevalence of 71% for victims and 63.7% for perpetrators. No significant relationship was found between young people's cyberbullying behaviour and their personal skills, resources, and societal and ecological factors. The multi-level modelling analysis of the three cities' data showed no significant different among factors predicting cyberbullying. This supports that the idea that cyberbullying is a universal threat to young people.

This research with youths unfolds itself in an analysis of digital educational practices (DEPs) about mediating possibilities of art through images. Pictures are taken as meaningful through the production of audiovisual narratives, shared on socialnetworks by young high school students. The DEPs are addressed from EMdiÃlogo Portal, as practice of youths observatory, operating in national territory network of universities, with support of the Ministry of Education - MEC. In Fortaleza, that was conducted in partnership with the Federal University of Cearà - UFC, having as central scenario the imagetic field of youth culture of the State School President Castelo Branco, in 2013. With the analytical field of research, students from popular classes from public state schools, we have seen the power of these spaces as socializing factors, but with needing of new forms of production of subjectivities, where interaction and dialogue can afford the art mode, creating new sensitivities in considered young multidimensional subjects. The movement of these young people was analyzed under the conceptual prism of Youth, DEPs and Images. To discuss the investigation of such imagery creations in her expressive content, these productions was unveiled with the representations of bodies, values, daily life and imagination of youth culture. The image as a practice that puts into play the subjectivity of each individual, which makes turning himself more deeply in a production of meaning to their experiences, culminating in a look at their living conditions as a mean of expression more critical of themselves, the group and the other. The daily life and imagination of youth culture, as trials of self and other, indicate an interlaced complex of conflictualities and new socializing propositions, when mediation of educators occurs in a certain way - as stimulating the youth position as actors of their lives and expressions. Thus, it was seen that the presencial educational mediation is critical in digital educational practices and also that in these movements of artistic expressiviness, the exercise of authorship should be done where the reception of images is combined with an enhancement of imagery artistic production. In this movement, the subjects exchange places and perpectives, constituting significational fields. So it is that in this qualitative research, when configuring itself upon the observation in virtual ethnography, we can see how it takes place the critical and creative juvenile reflection in the school context, since a new visual culture can counteract the other mass forms of tame the subject insert in the merchandise logic. Evidencing authoral compositions of the subjects in the weaving of their imagery artistic experiences we believe it is possible to image culture gestate itself within new socialization parameters in weavings of imagery artistic experiences.

Stephen, Aisha. "The Impact of the Men Accepting Neophytes-Uplifting Pupils Community-Based Mentoring Program." ScholarWorks, 2017. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/3473.

Abstract:
Effective mentoring programs are essential for African American youth to feel satisfaction and contribute to society, particularly in large urban communities. A need exists to study the impact of community-based mentoring programs in central Georgia, particularly those focused on male African Americans. Despite various mentoring programs, stakeholders know little about the elements of program impact for at-risk youths. Community mentoring programs frequently serve as a tool to minimize high dropout rates that often result from youth incarceration, expulsion, and suspension. The purpose of this study was to gain insight into the perceptions of mentors and administrative staff on the impact of programs designed to support at-risk youths' successful return to school. Attachment theory; Alderfer's existence, relatedness, and growth theory; and social-development theory served as the framework for this study. This qualitative case study examined the perceptions of mentors and administrators on the impact of the Men Accepting Neophytes and Uplifting Pupils (MAN-UP) mentoring program. Data accrued from document review, interviews, and observations of 15 mentors and 3 administrators. Data analytic procedures included the use of codes and themes. Results showed that the MAN-UP program is effective in combating some of the challenges that at-risk youth face. Positive social change may result from the creation of professional development for mentors and program administrators, which is specifically designed to improve the negative behaviors of African American male at-risk youth. This could have implications for mentors, educators, and communities seeking to reduce school suspension and expulsion rates and crimes that lead to incarceration. Proper mentor training would help to reduce recidivism.

Abstract:
On a national scale, statistics relating to moving patterns shows that youths and young adults are the ones who tend to move the most. The case in Västerbotten is similar as in the rest of Sweden and many municipalities are experiencing a population decline. This thesis aims to look into the motives behind moving from the perspective of youths and young adults and through that propose a strategy to strengthen the place attachment youths and young adults feel to their home municipality. The research is centered around Lycksele in Västerbotten. The research questions that the thesis aims to seek answers for are; What could an architectural strategy that aims to support youths in their leisure time and also strengthen their connection to the area look like? and What programmatic aspects are important to consider in such a strategy? The thesis investigates spatial needs from the perspective of youths and young adults which have been investigated through literature studies and action based research focused on interviews and a workshop. Four themes were common in both interviews and the workshop, these were; closeness to nature, possibility of work, valuable leisure time and a sense of home. To understand how an urban strategy can respond to the themes, strategies applied in other municipalities have been analysed. A finding was that in order for strategies to attract more inhabitants, they need to have a holistic approach and offer a complete lifestyle. Creativity is a theme which came up during interviews and literature studies as a possible platform around which an area can become considered as more attractive. The proposal is an urban strategy which aims to respond to the common themes from interviews and the workshop by enhancing and encouraging activities taking place and activating social space. This proposal suggests a strategy which aims to strengthen the notion of sense of place to enhance place attachment and through that possibly invite more young adults to move back in the future.

Nabavi, Maryam. "(Un)learning citizenship in Canada : Iranian immigrant youth's silences, contradictions, and expressions." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/39852.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines the meanings, interpretations, and experiences of citizenship in the lives of young Iranian immigrants in Canada in order to (1) offer a conceptual approach to migrant youth citizenship that fills gaps in dominant conceptualizations of citizenship in Canada, and (2) provide recommendations for the improvement of models of citizenship education relevant to lived experiences of migrant youth. Contemporary conceptions of citizenship in Canada are underpinned by assumptions closely aligned with a multicultural national identity and stress formal aspects of citizenship, which undermine substantive aspects of citizenship. Moreover, citizenship education is traditionally conveyed within formal schooling contexts, thereby neglecting the informal processes of learning citizenship for immigrants. To address these weaknesses, this study examines how citizenship is learned within and across diverse informal sites for Iranian immigrant youth. This understanding helps to situate more effective approaches to education that account for culture, locality, and the social, and political contexts in which learners are embedded. In 2010, I conducted a six-month ethnographic study with 12 first-generation immigrant Iranian youths aged 19-30 in Vancouver, Canada. Analysis of semi-structured interviews and participant observation disclosed citizenship as a process of learning within individuals’ lived experiences. In-depth engagement with the research findings, informed by concepts associated with cultural studies, diaspora studies, and cultural citizenship, reveal three conceptual commitments that aid understanding of citizenship and learning for citizenship: (1) identity as situated within multiple, shifting, intersecting, and interlocking dimensions; (2) citizenship as situated within multiple constructed boundaries of membership; and (3) citizenship as an iterative process of learning. This inductive framework situates citizenship discourse within the national and global contexts in which immigrant youth are embedded. This study contributes to theoretical and empirical literature on substantive and social citizenship and citizenship learning for immigrant youth in formal and informal contexts. It also offers practical recommendations for improving models of learning citizenship within formal schooling contexts by including: a conceptual commitment to move beyond a nation-based focus on citizenship, a curricular commitment to focus on the lived experiences of learners, and a pedagogical commitment to focus on informal and experiential modes of learning.
