This study aims to analyze the student assistance within the university residences. It is known that with the reality of students, interpersonal relationships, the dreams and perspectives, or see in their area of living your day to day. The study was conducted through field research, from students to veterans and rookies in the period May-June 2007 in two university residences located in the neighborhood of the Center and the Campus I of UFPB in João Pessoa. To develop this research was necessary to define a sample of approximately 10%, twenty-four students from a universe of three hundred. Used as a tool to collect the form with open and closed questions, and analysis of data in the tables, the graphics in addition to desk research and literature search. The study suggests that assistance to students has been maintained through efforts punctual, not always sufficient, the units of community and student affairs of each institution. It is essential that the education policy includes assistance to students who really is unable to remain in college. The student assistance is important for achieving a higher level of training qualified. Therefore, this study aims to contribute not only new knowledge but also to broaden the debate on the issue of student assistance, as public policy, those who really need support for their academic and professional development.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to explore the mechanisms and dynamics that may affect, cause changes or strengthen the initial direction of the educacional trajectories of youngsters. In order to characterize the type of trajectory, we looked at the following factors: age-grade distortion, grade retention, expulsion and drop-out. We explored how the spheres of sociability of the youngsters - family, school, neighbourhood, work, social programs, church and leisure - are associated and affect their school trajectories. In addition, we investigated the extent to which events that occur throughout their life can affect their behaviour, their relationship with ties established in different spheres of sociability and, consequently, their educational trajectories. The analysis made in this study are qualitative. The following instruments were used: in-depth interviews, free conversations, participant observation and passive interaction observation. Although we limited ourselves to one school, we found heterogeneity among respondents in terms of individual attributes and socioeconomic and cultural dimensions, factors that influence school trajectories. However, we identified young people with similar socioeconomic characteristics and conditions but distinct paths. In these cases, the differences found can be explained by the relationship established with ties in spheres of sociability and the ways in which crisis situations were dealt with

Abstract:
This paper explores the processes and outcomes of “The Recipe of Me,” a digital storytelling residency whose goals were to foster autonomy and community among disadvantaged youth aged twelve to fifteen living in the Orlando Union Rescue Mission. Using on-site experience and data, I explore the possibilities and advantages digital storytelling offered the students living in this population and consider the challenges of creating digital stories specific to this site. This case study provides a portrait of the residency which outlines the phases, techniques, tools and approaches used to create the digital stories and empower youth to create using multiple literacies. In doing so, I intend to reveal the ways in which digital storytelling encourages community, autonomy, agency, and artistic voice within youth at Orlando Union Rescue Mission.

Abstract:
This case study of Covenant House, an emergency shelter for street kids in downtown Toronto, focuses on the experiences that draw kids into youth shelters and that drive them out. The analysis stresses the importance to street kids of feeling "cared for". Street kids were drawn to Covenant House because they felt cared for there by its open intake policy, appealing facilities (clean surroundings and good food), and staff who listened to and were interested in their problems. But residents were rather swiftly turned off by its rigidly enforced, elaborate and "uncaring' rule structure, and either walked out or got kicked out. Given the limited alternatives in Toronto's "shelter world", however, Covenant House has become the preferred choice for street kids who find themselves in a cycle of entering, leaving and returning.

The interaction media networks experienced in contemporary society have allowed the construction of new types of social relations in which the various forms of culture are magnified, allowing that the culture "styles" are available to any individual in any space, either it is urban or rural. Given such context, this thesis emerges from the need to understand aspects of the subjectivity of a youth group that has two specificities: being a rural and being a resident of a MST settlement. Thus, it considers how these young people build their cultural meanings from the interface with the media and how they organize their conduct and principles through the flow of messages they are targeted in the middle of an environment characterized by cultural heterogeneity. Whereas a relational dynamics, examines the social practices of these individuals through the mediation undertaken by the radio and television (the Malhação program). The text convergence between anthropology, sociology and communication, from the triad Youths, cultural identities and media. The locus of research is the MST settlement named José Antonio Eufrosino, located in the state of Paraíba. The sample consists of a total of 42 youths belonging to the age of 14 to 29 years old, 21 females and 21 males. The textual structure of this study include a set of arguments that interconnect from a socio-spatial context, the construction of a typology of youths verified by their habits and even the cultural matrices that the interlocutors of this research build on the effects of media . The thesis argues that although the media pursues a centrality with the forms of sociability of these subjects, this is neither so all-encompassing nor generalizing. Although not immune to the appeals evidenced by the media, and interacting with different cultural spheres of theirs, the identities of these young are not necessarily represented by the media effects. Their cultural values are not lost as a result of influences received, since it does not deviate from their references.

Abstract:
The identities are forged dynamically in daily life amid the socio-psychological and political conditions. In this work, we adopt the theoretical perspective of social psychology, which considers social identity as a part of self-enunciation related to the perception of belonging to social groups, along with emotional meanings associated with that membership. This paper examines the dynamics of content creation and identity among resident students of UFS University through two studies: the first following a script mixed with questionnaire and interview, and the second through meetings in the form of focus groups. The study I aimed at investigating how university residents processed their identity constructions and specifically to verify the identity dimension which would be more evident - the individual or collective - what is the importance of (being a resident) for said building identity; the level of satisfaction associated with social belonging; which representations residents have of their social belonging and, finally, what meta-stereotypes in relation to group membership are apprehended by residents in the university context. The results indicated the large capacity of the participants in constructing self-concept meanings for themselves on the individual dimension, rather than consideration of possible dimensions of collective identities. Little emphasis was also noticed on self formulations of survey participants regarding the identity category "resident / university resident", and this, plus low prevalence, is also little protruding between them. Moreover, for those who associate their identities to the recognition of social belonging, the level of satisfaction regarding their identities is ambivalent. We also verified that there is among the surveyed a representational framework regarding the social belonging that does not favor the production of identity linked to the group of resident students; this frame also includes the seizure of meta-stereotypes toward the group produced in the university context. The study II aimed to verify whether, in contexts where possibly belonging to the social group of university residents structures political positions, participants turn to the social belonging "university resident" with a higher prevalence in the promotion and projection of their statements. The results indicated that, in specific situations, university residents now use the social category to which they belong in their identity constructions with the goal of legitimizing the demands and garner resources (material and symbolic) for the group. The recognition of social contexts in which the identity dynamics are processed, the perception of stereotypes and discrimination that arise from the establishment of an undervalued social identity causes individuals not to edit their identity belongings, whereas in times of struggles for better conditions for group membership, the affirmation of social identity is needed in legitimizing the claims related to the well being of the group.

Hess, Janet S. "Residency Education in Preparing Adolescent and Young Adults for Transition to Adult Care: A Mixed Methods Pilot Study." Scholar Commons, 2014. https://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/5039.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: There is considerable evidence that physicians lack sufficient training in facilitating transition from pediatric to adult care systems for adolescents and young adults (A/YA). While several primary care residency programs have introduced health care transition (HCT) curricula in recent years, there are few studies that assess the effectiveness of HCT teaching models. Purpose: To assess the impact of a residency education program that uses electronic health records (EHR) and other methods to teach residents how to prepare A/YA for transition to adult care. Methods: In a mixed methods, quasi-experimental research design, quantitative methods were used to measure change in knowledge, confidence and experience among 67 Pediatrics and Med-Peds residents who participated in the program. All residents and a comparison group were invited to complete a 35-item pre/post-survey; a retrospective chart review provided documentation of age-specific HCT preparation tasks completed by residents during well visits for A/YA aged 12-21. Descriptive and correlational analyses were conducted to compare differences between resident and control test scores for 5 outcome variables, and to measure resident utilization of the HCT tool in the EHR. Using the Reach Effectiveness-Adoption Implementation Maintenance (RE-AIM) evaluation model as a guide, semi-structured interviews were conducted concurrently with residents and faculty to assess program acceptability, feasibility, and other important attributes. Interviews were transcribed and analyzed using a constant comparative, iterative process. Results: Survey results showed residents (11 matched pairs) scored significantly higher than controls (13 matched pairs) in 2 of 5 outcomes: exposure to HCT learning activities (p=.0005) and confidence in providing primary care for YSHCN (p=.0377). Overall utilization of the EHR tool among 51 residents was 52.8% (57 of 108 patient visits). In interviews conducted with 16 residents and 6 faculty, both groups said that HCT training is a highly relevant need. Residents said they had little knowledge or experience in HCT prior to the intervention but felt more confident in their abilities afterwards. The HCT tool in the EHR was the only intervention element among multiple modalities that reached all study participants, with more than 80% of residents interviewed reporting they used the HCT tool "usually" or "always." Factors that influenced program adoption included accessibility of educational materials, ease of use, time constraints, patient age and health condition, and attending physicians' enforcement of the protocol. Conclusion: This study contributes to the body of knowledge concerning HCT by increasing our understanding of ways to effectively educate residents about transition preparation. Results show a positive intervention effect on selected dimensions of resident knowledge, confidence, and practice in HCT, highlighting program strengths and weaknesses. The program is distinctive in educating residents to prepare all A/YA for HCT, as recommended by major medical associations for pediatric and adult care physicians, and in its use of the EHR as a primary teaching tool, a consideration for reducing time-intensive didactic instruction. It provides a model that can be adapted by other residency and provider training programs, and suggests a need to integrate acquisition of health care self-management skills more broadly in child and adolescent health preventive care tools and policies.

Brewer, Gwendolyn Jett. "Housing awareness, importance, preferences, and satisfaction of pre- and early-adolescent children in Appalachian Kentucky." Diss., Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/74724.

Full text
Abstract:
Housing, a basic necessity, is frequently described as costly and increasingly designated as unaffordable; yet, there is a continuing conventionality in American tastes, desires, and ideals of housing. In order to expand housing knowledge, and, perhaps to facilitate the use of housing alternatives, attitudes/perceptions of housing held by pre- and early-adolescent children were investigated. The awareness, satisfaction, and importance attributed to housing by this consumer age group, who are often perceived as unconcerned or unopinionated, may be indicative of future housing demand and permanence of housing norms. Sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students in an Appalachian Kentucky county were surveyed regarding housing knowledge, opinions, preferences, satisfactions, and importance. Rather than a lack of opinion, the 172 participants revealed definite perceptions of housing in general, their individual housing situations, and concern for the future/cost of housing. Overall, housing attitudes were traditional and conservative; there was a general unwillingness to accept energy-conservative or manufactured dwellings. While the children were relatively satisfied with their housing, they did not attribute great importance to housing. Older children were more aware of housing, attributed greater importance to it, and reported more normative preferences. Housing satisfaction was greater if the child was male, lived in a residence that aligned with housing norms, or was from a household with a greater number of amenities. Older children, or those with greater housing experience, were more likely to prefer neighborhood homogeneity. General preferences for housing replicated the child's current housing situation. With today's cost of housing, as well as changing family needs for housing, the child gains importance as a housing consumer not only for the home's impact upon his/her development, but also for the future demand he/she will contribute to the housing market. Housing education regarding current and potential alternatives not only can help young housing users to develop more realistic perceptions and expectations of housing but also may facilitate the choice of and improve satisfaction with housing alternatives.

In Arrival City, the author suggests that when facing the problem of extravagant housing prices, the youth moving within urban area for better employment opportunities may change their property purchasing priority from downtown to the suburban district and utilize the mass transportation system to commute. The commuting between urban and suburban and the emerging of Makers industry have formed a new type of work-inhabit type and changed the mobility of population, developing an interface to mingle the common place shared by public and private sphere. Therefore, the study aims to explore the urban inhabitant mobility and the space share of social housing to envision the development of youth residence. The study conducted literature review related to the criteria including, 1. the development and phenomenon of the habitable space in Taiwan, such as the developing process of habitable space and congregate housing in Taipei and the distinction between public and private area in congregate housing; 2. the development of Maker industry, like the background and innovative service of the industry. The study also aims to find out a possibility to integrate the youth residence and the Maker industry and to probe into the spatial relationship between work and living, by analyzing relating studies. In addition, the study conducted few practical scheme, including, 1. interviewing the household participating in the 1000 Taipei Homes projects, and understanding the living of the youth participants; 2. constructing the spatial share mechanism among three modes, consisting of living and producing, living and work, living and leisure; 3. proposing a new form of youth residence with flexible spatial strategies coordinating the adjustable and unadjustable space to support the abovementioned living modes. The study also put the proposal into practice in the base at TAI MRT Lingko A9 station, attesting the space share and inhabitant mobility. The result suggests that: 1. the youth residence can be located at the base near MRT station, effectively increasing the inhabitant mobility and the deduction on the land cost can feed back to the tenant; 2. the early industrial settlement can be transformed to Maker youth residence; 3. the integration among youth residence, mass transit system, and the industries is a promising way to offer the youth sufficient housing and job opportunities, and the residence shall be for rental, not for sale, to reach Sustainable management

Abstract : In Taiwan, walk-up apartments create the unique street spaces and public life of old residential quarters. The research takes the influence of urban renewal on old residential quarters and street space culture into consideration. And then we attempt to apply new strategy of floor area distribution (called floating floor area) to increase the residential space of the young and their public space in the city with high density and housing price. It is an important issue of how to establish the environment, where the young live together with residents (especially the old) in city when population ageing has become a tendency. Therefore, the research aims to establish the combination by integrating the walk-up apartment with youth residence. To realize the above targets, relevant literature review includes (1) to learn urban development and phenomenon, such as Taiwan’s urban renewal history and background, urban renewal method and right conversion; (2) to find characters of walk-up apartment and street culture, such as evolution of walk-up apartment and relationship with street culture, further to learn public characters of urban space; (3) to explore dynamics of urban space and understand the relationship between architecture and time through related design cases. Based on ideas of the above literatures, we select Shih-Da Business District as an example to experience its street space and have site analysis in different aspects, including (1) building types in business area in Shih-Da Business District, as well as relationship between performance and old buildings; (2) building height and street, as well as relationship between right to enjoy sunshine and building density; (3) difference and phenomena of the young in urban life, residential space and living habit. Finally, the research establishes coexisting mode combined with old residence and young residence through 6 space strategies, including structure system, sunlight period, line planning, volume distribution, share space, unit type, etc. Through the design operation, the research gets the following conclusions. New structure system can renew old residential quarters and enhances its building performance. New floor area distribution method increases residential space for the young and public space lacked in Shih-Da Business District. Change mechanism and space strategy based on time will provide us with new opportunities and development of urban renewal and design in the future in Taiwan.

Abstract:
This study aimed to explore and describe the role perceptions of social workers working with children who have been sentenced to compulsory residence due to being in conflict with the law. Exploratory, descriptive, and contextual research designs were applied in using a qualitative research approach. The researcher collected the data using semi-structured interviews with all the social workers working with children sentenced to compulsory residence at Bosasa Child & Youth Care Centres. The data analysis was done using the eight steps identified by Tesch (in Creswell, 2014:198). The data verification was accomplished using Guba’s model (in Krefting, 1990:214-220). The research study provided valuable conclusions and recommendations to different role-players who have an interest in the role of social workers working with children sentenced to compulsory residence. The findings indicated the importance of regular training for social workers who work with children sentenced to compulsory residence to help children to deal with risk factors that may increase the probability of offences occurring.

When entering and settling into adulthood in a less than ideal developing world, youth with minimal resources continuously need to manoeuvre between opportunities and their living situation. This research project explores the phenomenon of youth residing in the inner city of Pretoria to understand their housing situation through the lens of homelessness and personal development. A qualitative field study, embedded in the research paradigm ethnomethodology, was conducted through interviews and observations with low-income, young males. The research has shown that respondents do not see themselves as ‘homeless’, even though the essence of what a ‘home’ means to them does not resonate with their perception of the inner city. Still, the various housing typologies and channels of socio-economic support that are accessed provide enough reason and resources to retain their position in the inner city. The impact of these negotiations on the identity and overall development of the respondents need further investigation - beyond what the research has suggested.

É referido a importância do primeiro momento do acolhimento.

The results, it could affirm that through the creation of affectional bond between a privileged educator and a child/youth, beyond a feeling of belonging to the Youth and Child Care Home that include the relational process on a basis of proximity / trust since a sheltering moment. The importance of the first sheltering moment is mentioned. There are other factors of analysis, the conditioning of the life in group. Effective support to the resident by adults, other youth and schoolmates, the incentive to individuality in physical spaces, justifying an intervention and preparation back to their families in some situations. There is a possibility for residents to complete their studies and build a future life, beyond the mandatory scholarity required. Other research findings are the importance of training caregivers in development and learning. It is noticed the scarce intervention with families, reported to the limitation of human resources, so that the child returns to his / her environment. Due to extravagant housing prices, the government actively promoted the construction of social housing to provide the house-demander an affordable and comfortable residence and alleviate the long-term residence problem. The resident’s satisfaction toward social housing policy is the part we need to figure out. This study mainly evaluates the outcome of social housing from the perspective of the resident to understand the effectiveness and achievement of the social housing policy implemented by the government. Based on related policy evaluation theory and social housing research, this research established housing policy evaluation indicators. In this research, we selected Zhonghe Youth Social Housing Project in New Taipei City as the case. To evaluate the performance of the case, we did a face-to-face survey and interview. We received 114 valid responses for the research. By exploratory factor analysis, descriptive statistical analysis, reliability analysis, multiple regression analysis, and inductive analysis from the interview data, we have three findings, and provide four policy suggestions.
