Abstract:
The Russian prose poem was officially born in December 1882, when the journal Vestnik Evropy published Ivan Turgenev’s last work, a collection of fifty “poems in prose” (stikhotvoreniia v proze). Although the generic title of Turgenev’s prose miniatures seems to echo Charles Baudelaire’s Petits Poemès en prose (1869), the fate of the prose poem in Russia turned out very differently from that in its country of origin. Whereas the French poème en prose has become a mainstay of modernist poetry, the Russian stikhotvorenie v proze looks at first sight like a rather anemic plant struggling to survive in an inhospitable environment. In many respects, it constitutes a marginal genre par excellence: located in the no-man’s-land between poetry and prose, it was practiced mainly by minor writers, or by major writers only in early youth or old age (note the title Turgenev originally proposed for his prose poems: Senilia).

Abstract:
White Afrikaans literature of the sixties can be seen as typically modernist, work of the later part of the eighties and of the nineties clearly shows all the characteristics of postmodernism. Against this backdrop recent Afrikaans prose writing dealing with the representation of childhood and youth can be discussed on the basis of a few of the best and most representative texts. A tentative conclusion is that Afrikaans writing in the nineties focuses on the individualized past, an approach Linda Hutcheon calls "historical metafiction". The authorial stance in these texts fluctuates between what can be termed nostalgia and parody, and should be seen as part of a traumatic psychological process facing white South Africans in particular, namely having to deal with the past. In Afrikaans prose writing the nostalgic stance is especially prevalent in the (traditional) prose writings of authors on the right of the political spectrum. In contrast the parodic stance (dominant in recent Afrikaans prose writings) not only leans toward postmodernism - the prevailing paradigm in the Afrikaans literary context - but can almost without exception be termed "leftist" and "progressive".

Abstract:
The article analyzes prose works by Russian twenty- and thirty-year-old authors who emerged in the early 2000s and gradually fell into obscurity right after their initial success. Sekretov’s article discusses A. Babchenko, I. Denezhkina, A. Karasyov, and others. All of their works share numerous distinctive traits, such as a predisposition to uncensored autobiographical narration, full identification of the author with the protagonist, and preoccupation with challenges faced by young adults and the force of rebellion, which, however, boils down to the axiomatic teen defiance. As a result, the young authors-cum-protagonists lose their swagger upon the first breakthrough, with their subsequent career grinding to a halt after the highest but single achievement. Therefore, in his analysis of the novels, interviews and critical reviews dedicated to the books by I. Denezhkina, A. Karasyov, I. Mamaeva and others, Sekretov identifies the generational characteristics of early 2000s literature and tracks the authors’ subsequent progress, seeking the reasons for so many failures.

Who writes what for whom? An authors’ profile of Afrikaans children’s and youth prose (fiction) 1990-2001 In this article a profile of authors in the production category Afrikaans children’s and youth prose (fiction) for the period 1990-2001 is compiled according to selected categories. The profile attempts to determine whether trends can be identified and statements and opinions of researchers with regard to this production category be corroborated by inferences drawn from this profile. Among others, the article addresses issues such as the age and gender of authors, the relation between authors and publishers and the influences of prices and awards on the publishing and writing patterns in this production category. It was found that a statistical analysis of authors involved in this publication category corroborated perceptions and findings of researchers in the field and can also identify and predict trends and problems.

Abstract:
The Bronx Cocked Back And Smoking is a collection of multifarious prose performances recounting the historical, personal, social, political and cultural constructs of a city birthed by violence. This body of work is accompanied by video, audio, photography, and theatre performance texts. St. Mary’s Housing project, in the Bronx, is the foundation where most of this literary work takes place. The modern day Griot (storyteller) is a Poet, guiding his audience through the social inequalities and disparities that plague St. Mary’s community. The Poet shares personal traumatic insights while simultaneously utilizing writing as a form of survival to the conditions of the Bronx. This multi-platform performance highlights the metaphorical and physical concerns with the cycle of violence. This question is answered through the Poet’s choice by selecting the pen over the gun.

Brink, Andrea Johanna Wilhelmine. "Evaluation of a programme to facilitate positive youth development / A.J.W. Brink." Thesis, North-West University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/4706.

Abstract:
The South African context, in particular, is characterized by a definite need for the facilitation of the development of the youth in a more positive trajectory. Family structures are not always robust enough to support the positive development of the youth, owing to the demands made on single–parent families, amongst other reasons. Community structures may also be less supportive of the development of the youth, because of the impact of the changes associated with the transitional phase of the country during the past sixteen years (Meehan, Peirson & Fridjhon, 2007). Furthermore, young people under the age of 15 years comprise almost a third of the total South African population (Statistics South Africa, 2009), and in the future, they will have to be prepared for an adulthood faced with previously unknown challenges (United Nations Population Fund). The importance of the development of the youth, in order to enable them to contribute to their country in future, is acknowledged by the South African Governement (National Youth Commission website). This study was conducted within the parameters of the newly developing positive youth development (PYD) paradigm. The empirical level of this paradigm is well represented in the literature, indicating that the content areas, or the “what” of PYD, have been well elucidated. However, there is a lack of theory, especially with regard to models describing developmental change (Larson et al., 2004), and evaluation of interventions aiming at the facilitation of PYD. In order to contribute to the answering of the questions regarding the “how” of development, this study had the following main aims: a) the compilation of a theoretical model, describing developmental change in the youth; b) the operationalization of this model for intervention purposes; and c) the evaluation of a programme and the model on which it is based. The study is reported on in an article format, and comprises a total of three articles. The first article focuses on the process of the compilation of a theoretical model by means of: a) the construction of a comprehensive meta–theoretical matrix, b) the integration of theory that features in the PYD literature, and c) the expansion of the latter with theory from other compatible sub–disciplines in psychology. The resultant Positive Youth Development Intervention (PYDI) model provides a process–related description of developmental change ? and is one of the first models to do so. The second article describes the operationalization of the PYDI model, by means of an indication of the relevant constructs, phenomena and processes to be facilitated. Although recent research points to a relation between PYD and self–regulation, there has been no model, describing the role of self–regulation in the facilitation of the positive development of the youth. This study adapted a model from an educational context (Heckhausen & Gollwitzer, 1987 (as cited in Boekaerts & Niemivirta, 2005)), in order to describe the regular self–regulatory processes constituting the bi–directional interactions between the youth and their primary life contexts, as proposed by developmental systems theory (Lerner, 1998), the meta–theory to PYD (King et al., 2005). A further specifc contribution is that the presentation aspects of the programme material, aimed at facilitating the integration thereof, are addressed on a theoretical level. The third article describes the evaluation of the PYDI model and programme, with young adolescents in a school in a rural area as participants. A mixed–methods study, which has been shown to render much richer information than a quantitative study alone, was applied. Although the quantitative data did not prove the success of the programme, the qualitative data suggested that some aspects of self–regulation had indeed been facilitated successfully. A second follow–up assessment, conducted seventeen months later, indicated that certain skills had only become internalized by that time, suggesting that the implementation and evaluation of such a programme should be expanded over an extended time–frame. This study has contributed to the level of theory of PYD, by indicating, a) the lacunae, and b) that theory in compatible sub–disciplinary paradigms could be used in order to devise workable models for PYD. Furthermore, the process–related nature of the PYDI model and programme, owing to its adaptability to different needs, may be adapted and extended to be applicable to the needs of the diverse South African population. Recommendations regarding future application and research, especially within the South African context, have also been put forward in the study.

Taking into consideracition that the written language is a means of interaction among people and that it is in that perspective that it should be taught in literacy classes, the main objective of this work was to investigate how it is conceived in the teaching-learning process of writting skills in youth and adult’s literacy programmer . To this end, we analysed the curricular proposal, the textbook used in youth and adult’s literacy classes and the teacher’s manual, as well as questionnaires answered by students and teachers. As theorical support for the alphabetization process, we researched works by Ferreiro (1983) and follwers, Tfouni (1988) and Soares (2000) sewed as theorical basis for the issues pertaining literacy. Bakthin (2000) was the basis for the central notion of textual genre. In general lines, we noticed that the teaching writing skills happens permeated by the following problems: a) despite the fact that curricular proposal and the teacher’s manual present a conception of writing based on social-cognitive aspects, this approach is not present in the in-training sessions or the writing activities carried out in the classroom; b) textual genre definition as well as the designation of the various textual genres required in classroom activities is still very unstable; c) the textual genres proposed in the writing activities do not fulfill the student’s learning expectations ; d) there is a discrepancy between what the teacher says he/she is working in the classroom and what the student says he/she is learning

Contemporary youth writers wrote various themes in prose, but Lai Yu-ting and Yang Fu-min wrote mainly about towns and villages. Lai Yu-ting and Yang Fu-min represented their hometown and villages by writng their childhood memories. They showed the sense of place in their local writing. They are quite unique in contemporary youth writers. Lai Yu-ting was born in Dali District, Taichung. Yang Fu-min was born in Danei District, Tainan. The places they lived in childhood were villages, so in their writing, there were farming landscape and description of life in the countryside. They had received several local literature awards, and were invited to write Column “San Shao Si Zhuang” in China Times. Therefore, they are representatives of the contemporary youth writers. The concept of “place” of Human Geographies was the core of this thesis. Through the resurch of Lai Yu-ting and Yang Fu-min’s prose, I would discuss the human spirit in contemporary youth writers’ local writing. The study consisted of six chapters. The first chapter included motivation, questions, reserach method, etc. The second chapter discussed the development of local writing in Taiwan, including the history and the situation of contemporary local writing. The third and forth chapters were the main parts of this study, and including three sections respectively. The three sections were about their growing background, writing process, writing themes and writing methods. Lai Yu-ting’s writng themes were “despicting family relationship and human interest”, “recalling of places and landscape” and “memory of childhood.” Yang Fu-min’s were “love and worries of homeland”, “family relationship and images”, “space, items and memories” and “the custom and beliefs.” Lai Yu-ting’s writing methods are “use of history materials”, “imagination and fiction”, “delicate description.” Yang Fu-min’s were “use of Taiwanese history and literature materials”, “pictures of novels” and “lively language and flexible-switching scenes .” The fifth chapter was about the comparison of Lai Yu-ting and Yang Fu-min’s writing. The sixth chapter was the conclusion of all the main points in this thesis, and gave positions of their local writing.

Abstract:
Resume The thesis deals with monitoring image of handicapped person in present Czech literature for children and youth. It involves creation from the 90th of the 20th century. Its aim is focusing on selected representative works of various authors and identifies the way of inclusion the physical, mental and social handicap. Selected works are different, they vary in genre, approach to disability and also in age of target readers. The reasons for this diversity is capture the range of options to solve this task as clearly as possible. The primary aspect is in particular literary and aesthetic, but the thesis also affects the emerging elements of educational, moral and ethical. It is engaged in construction of the main character and other characters, while the deciding recognition of differences is when the main character has handicap and on the other hand when handicap is viewed from a distance. In this diversity is also important the narrative perspective, that with their variations can lead to emphasize the heart of disabled person and his own emotionality, or more likely monitor the interaction of handicapped individual with world and other people. The thesis also investigates, whether there are any genre clichés, such superficially happy ending, or over-idealization of characters and considers modelling...

Van, der Westhuizen Elizabeth Susanna. "Die representasie van die visie in die verhalende prosa van Elsabe Steenberg / Elizabeth Susanna van der Westhuizen." Thesis, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/16626.

Abstract:
Elsabe Steenberg's oeuvre, consisting among others of forty two stories in book format, has four target groups -- preschool children, young children, teenagers and adults. Her narrative work is so richly textured and contains such a depth of insight into the complexities of life that it should not only attract attention because of its topicality, but that it should also be exposed -- especially in a society searching for direction -- to as large a number of readers and researchers as possible. It is clear that all of her works represent a view of reality which, from an intertextual point of view, could be seen as being grounded in the ontological point of departure. The main focus of the present study is to investigate the representational procedes through which the ontological view is represented in four selected texts from the oeuvre. This is done in order to establish internal textual variants and constants. The four selected texts, in which tree symbolism manifests itself in various intertextual permutations, are: Die boom wat wou loop (for preschool children), Soek-soek op soek (for young children), Boom homer boomste (for teenagers) and Plek van die bruin geeste (for adults). The rest of the oeuvre, as well as Elsabe Steenberg's poetics, are referred to cursorily in order to establish a corroborating intertextual comparative base. The procedes representing the whole internal textual universe, from concrete object, • through the different but also complementary narrative elements, further to the overt representation and manifestation of the abstract theme and view of the narrative world, are all investigated. The four texts are first discussed independently by means of a structuralist-semiotic approach, after which the variants and constants are determined intertextually. The numerous aspects of the representational system of the view of reality in all four the intensively studied texts, as well as those in the rest of the oeuvre which are only touched on briefly, an point toward one fundamental factor as semiotic sign, namely: God is. Identity as an intertextual constant plays a very prominent role in the whole oeuvre. Consequently, the numerous ways in which the fundamental view of reality are represented, are thus also associated with God's identity or Being, for example, God is the Origin, God is the Giver of insight into the diversity, interrelatedness and meaning of reality, and God is the real regenerating Force.

Abstract:
AbstractToday’s debate about education is prone to focusing on system optimization, test score improvement, and budgetary concerns. However, education is much more: it is primarily about a vision for our societies. As we think about a new vision, it has to speak to the ethos of our time. Today’s youth are heavily focused on social change, addressing global problems such as climate change, systemic racism, and economic inequality. This requires new content and pedagogies. Thus, schools should be rebuilt to support such endeavors, emphasizing ways of learning in which students have more agency and learning is more relevant. Currently, the schools where this work is possible are most typically located in affluent countries and regions. We should work to democratize the possibility of “learning how to change the world,” making public schools a viable locus for fostering social change.

Dorota Terakowska’s In Cat`s Land [W krainie Kota] as an example of dormant herstory The article is devoted to the interpretation of Dorota Terakowska’s novel In Cat`s Land [W krainie Kota] (1998) from the perspective of feminisms and “herstories.” The author starts from the classic concepts of pluralism of feminisms, arachnology, and herstories in order to signal their presence in contemporary Polish youth prose. She undertakes theoretical reflection on Anna Burzyńska, Kazimiera Szczuka, Monika Świerkosz, Grażyna Borkowska, and Ewa Kraskowska, who develop the concept of arachnology by Nancy K. Miller and herstory by Adele Aldridge. In the text, Terakowska’s prose is a general reflection on the presence of herstory, with particular emphasis on the work In Cat`s Land as a phantasmatic herstory highlighting specific female experiences.

From the beginning he understood the world in which he grew up as coastal and maritime, and Yeats’s writing about Ireland is watermarked with the diverse cultures that he experienced first-hand, in libraries and in archives, the past and the present joined in an archipelagic network of signs and associations that stretched from the west of Ireland to the Mediterranean, Africa, and Asia. This chapter describes the fluid declension of water in Yeats’s poetry and prose overall, with a focus on his early novel John Sherman.

Abstract:
The article raises, so far overlooked in the gerontological literature, question of old age based on the compositions: “Pensioner”, “Loneliness” and “Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass” by Bruno Schulz. According to the aforementioned concept, the author of “The Cinnamon Shops” unites poetic prose with broadly defined and still valid social issues. Schulz depicts the autumn of life as having numerous faces — it is associated with various experiences such as returning to childhood and youth at all costs, loneliness, lack of care and interest on the part of loved ones, finally leading to isolation and social exclusion. However, the writer describes these aspects without any pathos, often using irony and reviving presented images with a use of fantastic elements.

Abstract:
Loneliness, suffering, and sacrifice – A literary picture of youth in Dorota Terakowska’s prose Adolescence is a very special period in everybody’s life, and a very interesting one for scientific research and for artists, especially for writers. This article describes methods of presenting adolescence in chosen books of Dorota Terakowska for young readers. The world in her books is characterized, on the one hand, by universal values and, on the other hand, by symbols. Young protagonists of her books are involved in difficult and complicated situations. There is loneliness, suffering, and sacrifice written into the young people’s lives. The protagonists’ demeanor and the way they cope with adversities make young readers more empathic and help them to see other people’s problems more clearly. In Dorota Terakowska’s books, young readers can find the answers to many pressing questions.

Abstract:
This chapter reflects on how writers through 2021 have responded to James Joyce's texts, taken up some of his key themes (fatherhood, history, literary heritage, exile), and viewed him as either a welcome foreign contributor to their national tradition or an influence best worth ignoring. To do so, the chapter puts the interviews of writers and critics into dialogue with one another. This collective holds weekly meetings on Sundays via Zoom as they gradually make their way through Ulysses, over and over; they also organize an annual Bloomsday walk and celebration in central Moscow. The chapter reveals how the Russian Joyce is no less dynamic today. He has become an exile, a peripheral writer (in both senses of the word), a relic of the past, a gargantuan technical innovator, a symbol for the free spirit of prose, a passing fancy in one's youth, a hooligan, and a master of life-creation (zhiznetvorchestvo), among many other things.

Abstract:
This chapter examines how the generation born about 1910 found propitious conditions for the creation of a ‘Jewish school’ of Polish literature. Life, including their most inner life, was lived through the Polish language. Yet this life was marked by unexpectedly strong Jewish features. Jews had certainly made themselves felt in Polish literature much earlier. Already at the turn of the century, writers of Jewish descent played an important role in the intellectual elite. Their role was to increase considerably in independent Poland. However, those who desired assimilation had to abide by the tacit understanding that they were not to explore their Jewish experience, at least not in their literature. Thus, the first intellectuals to surface as identifiably Jewish in their work were critics and historians; then came poets. Yet prose writers were significantly absent. Novelists base the substance of their work on their life experience, particularly the experience of youth; the Polonized Jews preferred to leave their past in the dark.

Abstract:
Youth who are able to establish lives in the United States must withstand the difficulties of several contradictory demands. This chapter reveals the paradoxes and contradictions required of youth as they attempt to integrate into families, the legal system, and the education system. First, youth must prove their innocence while constantly being reminded of their racialized criminality as undocumented immigrants. Second, unaccompanied youth are agentic by definition, yet their agency is shamed or limited in gendered ways, and they often must prove to a judge their social dependency on family and education systems. Finally, youth who are alone in the United States lead lives filled with instability; yet, they must overcome this instability in order to fulfill requirements in their legal case.

Abstract:
The prosaic works of Yang Won Sik (1932–2006), a representative of Korean literature in Kazakhstan, are considered for the first time. After the Korean War, the DPRK leadership sent talented youth to Moscow to get an education. The New Republic needed qualified specialists to build a new state. Yang Won Sik graduates from VGIK in 1958 and stays in the USSR. He devoted many years to the life of the Kazakhfilm Studio and the republican newspaper Kore Ilbo. Yang Won Sik was a member of the Union of Writers of the USSR (1990) and Kazakhstan, a member of the Union of Cinematographers of the USSR, a member of the international PEN Club. The prose by Yang Won Sik written in a dialect of the province of Hamken conveys the historical “time — space” through the system of images and, in particular, verbal images. The author introduces the reader to the panorama of events of the beginning of the last century to the present. In his works of the 1950s and 1980s, Yang Won Sik uses Koryo mar in artistic speech. In the stories describing the events of the early twentieth century, the language of the Far Eastern Koreans is different. Each historical period creates its own words that disappear with the era.

Abstract:
Introduction: Many studies prove the effect of occupational noise to cardiovascular system. Respiratory diseases also lead to cardiovascular pathology risk increase. The study of occupational noise effects to cardiovascular pathology frequency in patients with occupational diseases of respiratory system is relevant. The goal: to study cardiovascular pathology prevalence and age in patients with occupational diseases of respiratory system who have come into contact with silica-containing dust and noise. Research methods: 178 case histories of patients with occupational pathology of respiratory system were analyzed. 2 groups were identified: persons worked with silica-containing dust (group 1) and worked with silica-containing dust and occupational noise (group 2). Cardiovascular pathology frequency in each group of patients were estimated according to discharge epicrisis data. Results: The incidence of arterial hypertension (AH) in the 1st group was 60%, in the 2nd group of - 78.3%. The average age of onset of AH in group 1 was 57.5 ± 6.9 years, in group 2 - 51.8 ± 5.5 years. Conclusions: AH prevalence of working in harmful occupational conditions exceeds the average frequency of AH in general population. AH were more common under combined exposure of silica-containing dust and occupational noise and develops in this category of people at younger age.

Abstract:
Language change and contact in Vietnam has recently intensified among some demographic groups. As such, certain sociolinguistic patterns help to describe these changes in language and society. This study is aimed at observing and measuring dialect change in Vietnam influenced by urbanization, with evidence from a rural community in Hanoi, a speech community in Xuan Canh commune, Dong Anh district. The study investigates the ways in which dialect change in this region has developed according to specific social and cultural factors. The Xuan Canh speech community evidences a narrowing usage of local variants. For its method, the study employs fieldwork, and subsequent quantitative methods to aid in the analysis. The data set includes 34 informants, randomly selected, which were categorized into certain social variables. The study also released 34 questionnaires, 11 recorded files of natural speech, from which emerged two sets of 34 recorded files of word lists and a text. The results indicate a gradual reduction in the frequency of use of local variants, a decrease in the number of lexical forms with rural characteristics, and an increase in certain types of urban variants. This trend can be seen by observing changing social variables sensitive to urbanization, such as youths, officials, students, and hence people who have out-community communication scope. Here, the quantitative correlations prove statistically significant. The state of dialect change in this community thus signifies a phenomenon common to Vietnamese rural communities under the effect of the urbanization; that is, a tendency following language urbanization in Vietnam.
