Abstract:
States are increasingly adopting risk assessment instruments (RAIs) to help judges determine the appropriate type and length of punishment for an offender. Although this sentencing practice has been met with a wide variety of scholarly criticism, there has been virtually no discussion of how RAIs treat youth as a strong factor contributing to a high risk score. This silence is puzzling. Not only is youth undoubtedly the most powerful risk factor in most RAIs, but youth also holds a special place in the criminal justice system as a “mitigating factor of great weight.” This Comment presents the first in-depth critique of RAIs with respect to their treatment of youth. It argues that, as currently designed and implemented, RAIs both contradict longstanding and widespread views about the proper role of youth as a factor in punishment and undermine efforts to craft proportionate sentences consistent with principles of justice and modern social science.

Abstract:
AbstractFor 100 years, IUPAC has supported chemists worldwide in all facets of their craft: industrial development, academic research, teaching, and many more. Mindful of nurturing its future leaders, since 2020 the Union ensured the attendance of the younger generation of chemists at the General Assembly and Congress in part through their “Young Observers” program [1]. It provides an opportunity for scientists below 40 to acquaint themselves with the work of the Divisions and Committees. The IUPAC Congress, which attracts several thousand attendees every two years, was not finely tuned to the expectations and contributions of the rising generation of chemists. However, the paradigm has begun to change. For the 47th Congress organized in Paris, France, 5-12 July 2019, the scientific executive committee, chaired by Clément Sanchez, enthusiastically received the proposal from a team of young chemists to build a “Young Chemists Symposium”, organized by younger chemists for the benefit of all the attendees.

Abstract:
In the article, the authors consider the issues of participation of young scientists in the events of the Festival of the All-Russian Society of Inventors and Innovators (hereinafter - VOIR) "Science and Inventions for Life", which took place in 2023 in various regions of the Russian Federation. At the same time, special attention is paid to the organization and holding of the Forum at Yaroslav the Wise Novgorod State University (hereinafter – NovSU) (Veliky Novgorod). The authors conclude that the model of holding events of this format for young scientists forms not only professional, but also additional skills in the field of communication, interaction, as well as competencies in the field of intellectual property. The advantages of the analyzed model of conducting scientific and practical events at the AllRussian level are noted in the work. The authors reveal an innovative approach to the preparation of scientific and practical events. In particular, the requirements for the organization of the competitive, expert, exhibition and congress part of the events, the algorithm of actions and the stage of implementation are revealed. It is concluded that the model of scientific and practical activities of university students should be accompanied by comprehensive interaction with the patent office.

Abstract:
Prostate cancer is the most common non-cutaneous malignancy in men. It is generally considered a cancer of the elderly, and the median age of presentation is 68 years. However 10% of new diagnoses in the USA occur in men aged ≤ 55 years. This may be due to more prevalent screening nowadays, and may also reflect the diagnosis of an increasingly recognized but underappreciated entity, i.e. early-onset prostate cancer. Patients with early onset prostate cancer pose unique challenges. Current data suggest that early-onset prostate cancer is a distinct phenotype—from both an etiological and clinical perspective— that deserves further attention. We present a case of a 28-year-old man who presented with lower urinary tract symptoms and was diagnosed with advanced stage prostate cancer.

Full text
Abstract:
The paper deals with an experiment that was established at Opočno Experimental Station of the Forest and Game Management Research Institute (CR) in an oak small pole stage in 1952 to test whether Schaedelin’’s (1942) tending method worked out for beech stands is suitable for oak stands. Development and growth of the oak stand without tending are analysed, and the influence of repeated positive selection and of definitive selection of target trees on the oak stand is described. The result of the 50-year experiment is that Schaedelin’s tending method is suitable also for oak stands. However, it is rational only if the choice of candidates from the small pole stage is focused on vital straight trees.
