Abstract:
SummaryThis article explores the relationships between young European women who worked in the growing entertainment market in Argentine and Brazilian cities, and the many people who from time to time came under suspicion of exploiting them for prostitution. The international travels of young women with contracts to sing or dance in music halls, theatres, and cabarets provide a unique opportunity to reflect on some of the practices of labour intermediation. Fragments of their experiences were recorded by a number of Brazilian police investigations carried out in order to expel “undesirable” foreigners under the Foreigners Expulsion Act of 1907. Such sources shed light on the work arrangements that made it possible for young women to travel overseas. The article discusses how degrees of autonomy, violence, and exploitation in the artists’ work contracts were negotiated between parties at the time, especially by travelling young women whose social experiences shaped morally ambiguous identities as artists, prostitutes, and hired workers.

Abstract:
Purpose This study aims to investigate the moderating effect of travel motivation on the relationship between perceived risks, travel constraints and visit intention of young women travelers. Design/methodology/approach A quantitative study was performed, and data were collected from 416 female university students using convenience sampling. Structural equation modeling with partial least square approach was used to test the research hypotheses. Findings The findings revealed that travel motivation has a moderating effect by weakening the negative relationships between physical risk, structural constraints and visit intention. Practical implications The findings of this study provide useful insights for destination managers about the influence of travel motivation on the behavioral intention of young women travelers in the case of higher perceptions of travel risks and constraints. Originality/value Literature has discussed the intervening role of travel motivations in different contexts. However, studies are scarce in examining the effect of travel motivation in weakening the negative influence of high perceptions of risks and constraints on intention to visit.

Abstract:
This article uses national travel surveys from Sweden to examine the relationship between family situation, sex and work-related overnight travel. The results indicate that family obligations have an impact on travel activity, but that women and men differ in this respect. Cohabiting men travel more than men living alone, whereas there is no such effect among women. Having young children reduces the travel activity of women, whereas there is no consistent such effect among men. However, regardless of family situation, men travel considerably more than women and this largely reflects women’s and men’s different positions in working life. It is therefore argued that the relationship between work-related travel and family obligations involves both individual adaptation and structural factors, such as a gender-segregated labour market and ‘gender-typing’ of travel as a predominantly male activity, all of which reflect traditional gender and family role expectations.

Abstract:
Discussions of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century European travel have long tended to over-apply the model of the grand tour. It is increasingly recognized now that many British journeys to the Continent knew different motivations and itineraries, and were made from different subject positions than that of the young male aristocrat. An alternative model proposed for female travelers has its own limitations, however. It presents women as more open-minded than men, with a greater eye for detail and keen to escape patriarchal confinement at home. Yet female travelers’ wish and capacity to offer an alternative to the grand-tourist gaze was limited. Still, travel, travel writing, and publishing offered women a chance to explore new social models and lifestyles and develop new forms of personal independence.

Abstract:
Purpose If the only viable future for tourism is sustainable tourism then ways should be sought to increase the demand for sustainable offers. The purpose of this paper is to explore whether sustainability values influence the travel needs of students. The aim is to discover cues in the present behaviour of young tourists that can enhance sustainable travel choices and therefore secure the future of the tourism industry. Moreover, the study provides a solid basis for predicting the future travel behaviour of young tourists. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected in The Netherlands in 2013 through a survey. A non‐probabilistic sample of 365 students (a sub‐group of young tourists) was reached. Multivariate analyses were used to test whether position in the social structure and value orientation influence the travel need. The logistic models allowed youth tourism behaviour to be predicted. Findings Respondents with a biospheric value orientation associate travel with being in contact with nature and chose rest as a motivation. This is highly interesting from a future perspective because biospheric values are considered the most stable antecedent of sustainable behaviour. Findings also highlight women's role as the sustainable tourists of the future: women harbour strong sustainability values and see travel as a growth opportunity. Research limitations/implications This research focuses on travel needs because this is the most future‐oriented phase of the tourism experience, and on students because they tend to travel independently. Future research might include travel consumption and evaluation as well as non‐students in the sample to give a more balanced view on young tourists. Future research might also include values not related to sustainability to assess their relative strengths in influencing youth tourism. Practical implications Both policy makers and industry could capitalise on the sustainability values already present in young people's need for travel to nudge this group – who represents tourism's future – towards a sustainable tourism choice. For example, strengthening sustainability values through marketing and education will increase demand for a sustainable offer. Originality/value Values related to sustainability influence general tourism choices by young travellers, and not only choices related to a sustainability offer. This finding suggests a path to address the classic dilemma between individualism and sustainability and assure tourism's future by showing young travellers that they already harbour sustainability values.

Abstract:
PurposeThis study aims to examine the demographic differences of Chinese nationals’ travel experience sharing through different offline and online platforms.Design/methodology/approachCross-tabulation analysis was applied on a national sample of 6081 respondents in China.FindingsThe study found that Chinese women tend to share travel experience more often than Chinese men; old people in China tend to use the face-to-face approach more than online or social media to share their travel experience. About 66.5 per cent of the survey sample used WeChat Moments to share their travel experience, highlighting WeChat as the dominating social media platform in China for travel sharing. In general, people who share via online platforms (WeChat, Weibo, QQ Space) tend to be young, single or unmarried, well-educated and earning a high monthly income.Originality/valueThe study offers an in-depth understanding of travel experience sharing idiosyncrasies in China.

Abstract:
Utilization of tourism information and communication technology has an impact on increasing tourist satisfaction. One of them is the use of smartphones as a travel tool such as booking accommodation, selecting destinations, searching for tourist locations, distance to tourist sites, weather at tourist sites, uploading travel memories, and other travel needs. This study aims to describe the social, economic, demographic variables of tourists in using smartphones as a travel tool in Bali. The basic needs of tourists such as hotels and restaurants are the main needs of tourists in browsing through smartphones. In addition, the conditions at the destination are also a relatively important need for tourists to know through the use of smartphones. Women as domestic tourists dominate the use of smartphones in traveling, most of whom are women who live in metropolitan areas. Meanwhile, for foreign tourists, it looks proportionally distributed based on the country of origin of the tourists. Those who are well-educated dominate the use of smartphones in traveling. The distribution of young and productive ages can also be seen clearly in using smartphones as a travel tool. Even in the case of foreign tourists, the elderly also contributes to the use of smartphones as a travel tool.

Abstract:
: Menstrual cups are a better alternative for menstrual hygiene but usage among girls and women is limited due to lack of popularity. The purpose of this study is to assess the usage of menstrual cup and its determinants among young women in health profession.: This is a cross-sectional analytical study designed to collect data among 370 young women who fulfilled the selection criteria using a cluster sampling method. The objectives of the study were assessed with a self-administered questionnaire. The data were analyzed using descriptive (frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (chi-square). All statistical analysis was carried out at a 5% level of significance.: Among 370 young women only 29 (7.8%) use a menstrual cup, nearly 90% of them use it because it is comfortable, non-allergic, convenient during travel, and enables free movement. Only 8 (2.2%) have used it earlier but not presently, about 75% of them stopped because of difficulty in insertion. While 333 (90%) of young women have never used a menstrual cup, about 70% presumed menstrual cup insertion would be difficult and uncomfortable. : Young women despite being in the health profession and knowing about menstrual cups do not use them. This highlights the need for efforts to promote awareness regarding the availability and utilization of menstrual cups to empower girls and women in maintaining menstrual hygiene.

Abstract:
This research is in the field of social psychology of work and organizations. It is interested in behavior organizational socialization of graduated Vietnamese young women. Adopting a systemic and constructivist approach, we think each person at work is « an active subject because plural and prospective » in his process of socialization and personalization. In an exploring view, we try to show that the socialization behaviours of young Vietnamese graduated are not only determined by their socio-biographical characteristics and their organizational contexts but also oriented by their psychological activity of meaning of work. After an exploratory investigation by interview, an extensive survey with questionnaire allowed us to inquire 435 young women graduates, from Master of Arts level, in a multiplicity of work spheres. First, the analysis of the results, allows establishing a typology of young Vietnamese graduates. The socio-biographical characteristics of the 4 classes are in significant relationships with the various behaviours of organizational socialization. When analyzing those first results, it seems that socio-economic and cultural context in the transition of labour and employment in Vietnam, stay a « collective determinant » for individual behaviours of workers. In addition, the results show the importance of axiological processes which are involved in the activities of our subjects, including the influence of the meaning of work, on the evaluation process by the subjects of the effects of their work activity. Over the contribution to describe the working behaviours of young graduates Vietnamese, these results provide recommendations both at a theoretical and at a practical level. At the theoretical level, they invited to enrich the notion of « plural subject » in the same professional sphere as literature doesn’t approach yet. Practically, they lead to propose training and professional guidance to make easier the professional insertion of young Vietnamese women and men
Abstract:
Strength training is increasingly practiced by previously untrained people or by experienced athletes. This work aimed to evaluate cardiac adaptations to strength training over these different populations. In a first time, we evaluated the longitudinal impact of 16-weeks strength training on the cardiac function of previously untrained women and men. The American College of Sports Medicine recommendations were used to build the training program (i.e. training at 70% of the repetition maximum, 4 sets, 8-12 repetitions, 3 times a week with polyarticular exercices). 2D-strain echocardiography was used to assess both left ventricular and atrial morphology and function. In a second time, we aimed to evaluate the cardiac function of strength-trained athletes, which used androgenic anabolic steroids. While previous studies reported an alteration of cardiac function in this population, with sudden-death frequently reported, any study used 2D-strain parameters to understand the dysfunctions. In this context, we used 2D-strain analysis to evaluate global and regional myocardial function in order to evaluate the underlying mechanisms of left ventricular and left atrial functions, with a specific evaluation of intra-ventricular dyssynchrony. Finally, we aimed to compare our athletes using androgenic anabolic steroids users to athletes with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy to assess the probably pathological remodelling generates by anabolic androgenic steroids. In this study, we evaluate myocardial work, a new tool in echocardiography, which take into account load conditions and could better discriminate our populations

AbstractUsing the example of Käthe Schirmacher’s travel to the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893, this chapter explores the transatlantic networks and the internationalisation strategies of women’s movements in the late nineteenth century. It discusses the role of multilingual mediators in the building of transnational networks of activism and the opportunities this role offered to young, well-educated women like Schirmacher who were looking for both an income and a political mission. The chapter also analyses the concept of the ‘new woman’ Schirmacher propagated in her speech at the congress and argues that in so doing she contributed to shaping a new persona that opened up professional identities for women and thus chances to earn an independent income.

Abstract:
AbstractAs embodiment plays a central role in Victorian novels exploring women’s journeys, the interdependence of health and travel comes expressly to light in Henry James’s The Portrait of a Lady (1881) and Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the d’Urbervilles (1891). In both novels, protagonists navigate possibilities and perils of motion while embarking on international voyages and rural wanderings. On the one hand, the mobility of Isabel Archer and Tess Durbeyfield merges a focus on the proliferation of transportation technology and medical tourism in Victorian society with depictions of movement as an enabler of female autonomy. On the other hand, the heroines’ exertions are contrasted against their family networks, male characters suffering from illness, and infant deaths intertwined with immobility. In this respect, the phenomenology of Maurice Merleau-Ponty provides insight into the embodied enactment and somatic sensation of physical motion. Centred around three elements of movement, the ailing body, and maternity connecting James’s and Hardy’s publications, Natasha Anderson’s chapter examines Isabel and Tess navigating interdependencies of illness and mobility as the young women encounter freedoms and limitations of health in the familial sphere alongside gendered allowances of movement spanning physical activities and transnational travel.

Abstract:
AbstractIn this chapter, I reflect on the relationship between shame and digital traces in cases of image-based sexual abuse (IBSA) (I am thankful to Giovanni Zampieri, Dario Lucchesi and Massimo Cerulo for their invaluable help in writing and revising this chapter.). I will introduce the concept of shameful trace to describe records of diverse nature that can be used by a group of people participating in an effort to stigmatise an appearance, a conduct, an attitude or any other cause of social disapproval. Such a record is an object of shame only in a latent form. For it to become a shameful trace, it is necessary that it be shared and focussed on particular situations of moral condemnation. This is neither a purely theoretical nor a purely empirical article. Rather, I first consider a case study of moral violence against a young Italian woman, Tiziana Cantone, who committed suicide in 2016 after the widespread non-consensual dissemination of intimate images. Further, I propose a theoretical understanding of the diffusion of shameful traces as a process of concerted social action including five elements: first, the ontology of the trace; second, the actors involved in its production and diffusion; third, the temporal and spatial coordinates of the shame diffusion and the technical or social means employed in it; and finally (fourth and fifth), the cultural and normative frameworks. Finally, I investigate how social bonds and sociotechnical and normative regulations favour the diffusion of shame in cases of IBSA.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the contribution of working-class immigrant women—another important but often underestimated group—to the movement. Working-class women touted the vote as a viable solution to wage woes and threatening working conditions. They did not need elite suffragists to empower them; working-class women transferred the speaking and activist skills they had honed in the labor movement to disseminate their suffragist convictions. In addition, many of the women possessed some of the same qualities suffrage leaders valued in their workers; being young and single, they had the freedom to travel the state and the ability to appeal to broad, working-class audiences. They compensated for class tensions by appealing to multi-ethnic voters as Irish, German, Russian, Polish, Jewish, and Italian women joined the suffrage alliance.

Abstract:
The segment of independent travelers has experienced big growth in recent years, not only worldwide but also in Portugal. This phenomenon, which is not recent, has been gaining momentum in recent times, with women playing an important role. This chapter explores the literature on solo female travel, seeking to understand the motivations, as well as the difficulties encountered during the journey. To this end, a qualitative approach was used, with semi-structured interviews being conducted to 24 Portuguese women. The content analysis of the interviews was done with the assistance of the WebQDA software. Results show that most women traveling alone are young, single, and childless, identifying themselves mostly as adventurous, outgoing, and independent. The lack of travel companion, the freedom of choice, the experience and adventure, and the escape from the daily routine are highlighted as motivations to travel alone. The main difficulties identified are loneliness, harassment, fear of walking alone at night or being robbed.

Abstract:
Abstract When the results of the 1981’National Survey of Homeworking were published (Hakim, 1984, 1985, 1987b, 1988a), they aroused controversy because they revealed a picture of homeworking very different from the one being offered at the time by local and national pressure groups (Rubery, 1989: 52; Phizacklea and Wolkowitz, 1995: 31-2). There was feminist and left-wing political resistance to the conclusions that many homeworkers were men; that most women homeworkers did not have young children at home; that white-collar jobs greatly outnumbered low-paid manufacturing homework jobs; that rates of pay and earnings varied a great deal rather than homework being universally poorly paid work; that the majority of homeworkers seemed to be self-employed and often worked for a variety of employers rather than being clear-cut cases of dependent labour working for a single employer on a continuous basis; that most homeworkers were satisfied with their jobs; and that homeworkers had negative views of trade unions, seeing them as organizations that served the interests of well-paid male workers, with little or no interest in the problems of low-paid female workers, especially if they worked part-time and on an intermittent basis at home.

Full text
Abstract:
Train toilets are perceived to be dirty and as a consequence train travelers rate the toilet as insufficient. While the train toilet is mainly used to urinate it is for men impossible to keep the train toilet clean without spilling urine outside the bowl while standing. This causes women to hover while urinating and as a result they add to the soiling of the train toilet, by spilling drips over the seat. A ‘hygienic train toilet’ will make train travel more attractive, and it can remove one of the obstacles to travelling by train, particularly for the elderly and families with young children.A possible solution to improve hygiene in the train toilet is splitting its interior based on the posture while urinating. Accordingly, a toilet with two modules was designed: One for urinating standing and the other for the seated or hovered toilet use which was ‘inclusively designed’, thus the interior is enhanced with adaptations such as toddler platforms, a diaper changing table, extra support and enough space for wheel-chair manipulation. The observation and questionnaire both with 26 users of 3-68 years old (some wheel chair users) showed that the mock-up of the train toilet indirectly scored a 7.1 on a 10 point scale (1= very bad, 10= very good), but there is room for improvement, for instance a sanitary waste bin, an extra support bar on the left side of the toilet and a toddler platform under the urinal were lacking.

Abstract:
Globally a wide gender gap has persisted over the years at all levels of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) disciplines. Girls and women are systematically tracked away from science and math throughout their education, limiting their access, preparation and opportunities to go into these fields as adults. Women make up only 28% of the workforce in STEM. Men vastly outnumber women majoring in most STEM fields in college and in the market place. There is still a gross underrepresentation of women in the STEM fields in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) where the share of females graduating from tertiary education engineering fields is below 30%. The under-representation is a concern both for gender equality and economic competitiveness. // This study was based on Instructional Theory for Skills Development. It applied descriptive survey method. The study sample was 76 TVET female students, 36 for pre-training survey and 40 for post training survey. A gender based survey on the issues affecting women in the society, their employability and if young women would enroll in male dominated course given an opportunity was done. The project trained 40 women in technical skills for employability in two male dominated careers; electrical wireman and plumbing and pipe fittings. The 40 women were linked to industries for job related experience and were further registered for examination by National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) in Kenya. They recorded 100% pass rate and were certificated. 80% of the young women and girls are gainfully employed while 20% are pursuing further training. The study found out that young women are willing and are capable of training in skills in male dominated TVET sectors.
