Zanni, Caroline A. A. "Attention and music : understanding young children's attention and the potential of music to increase attention." Thesis, McGill University, 2004. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=85108.
Full textThere were 24 participants in this study, 12 children rated as having attention problems by their teacher and 12 children in the control group. Participants age ranged from 5 years 0 months to 6 years 11 months. All the children were of average intelligence, and were attending an English school or preschool within the greater Montreal Area. Participants served as their own controls for the music conditions. Participants were nested within group and order for the four treatment conditions.
Findings indicated that attention difficulties not only affect behaviour, attention, and inhibition, but also influence cognitive processes in language, memory, and visual perceptual abilities especially visual motor precision. Neuropsychological tests were useful in the assessment of children's attention difficulties and could be used to differentiate attention problems that are strictly behavioural from those that are more likely the result of neuropsychological deficits. For children with attention problems environment and music had limited effects on neuropsychological variables. Rock and roll increased children's ability to sustain visual attention if they were classified as having an attention problem. It did not have this effect for children without attention problems. Gross motor inhibition is also affected by rock and roll, but only for boys who have attention problems. Higher level interactions with gender were found in overall neuropsychological functioning and with respect to music. School based interventions must be based not only on behaviour but also on cognitive deficits; early intervention is important to this process.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study aims to investigate the phenomena of theatrical events and festivalisations, specifically aimed at young people. Various methodologies on theatrical events and festivalisation are integrated into a devised model. The devised model offers a clear and comprehensive understanding of the numerous processes and structures that play significant roles in the production and experience of a theatrical event or festival. The devised model is utilised to investigate and analyse the trends and practices of Theatre for Young People internationally (specifically Australia) and locally. The devised model allows the study to highlight certain strengths, opportunities, challenges and shortcomings of the different industries. Through comparing the local trends and practices with those of the international Theatre for Young People industries, areas of development are identified. Finally, the study develops a model that can be implemented into the South African environment, and highlights specific challenges and areas that should be developed in order to create a thriving and sustainable Theatre for Young People industry in South Africa. It is evident that South Africa’s support structures differ significantly from those of other countries where Theatre for Young People industries flourish. This has caused Theatre for Young People practitioners to adopt a predominantly didactic approach to producing events for young people. The study found that, in order to create a thriving Theatre for Young People industry, a balance between the educational and entertainment values of Theatre for Young People should be maintained.

learners basing on their performance in a spatial learning task, the Morris Water Maze. The levels of several fatty acids including palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic, arachidonic acid (AA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) were measured using gas chromatography separately in samples from four different brain areas: hippocampus, cortex, striatum and hypothalamus. The level of oleic acid in the cerebral cortex was significantly higher in young-good learners as compared to young-poor learners and higher in young-poor learners than in old-poor learners, with no significant difference in the concentration of this acid between old-good and old-poor learners. The most consistent correlation between animals&rsquo
learning capacity and brain fatty acid&rsquo
level was found for the arachidonic acid in the hippocampal region: AA level was significantly lower in young-good learners as compared to both young-poor learners&rdquo
and old-good learners&rdquo
with young-good learners showing significantly better performance than the two other groups. Interestingly, except hypothalamus, no significant between-group differences were recorded for the remaining fatty acids including DHA, in none of the four brain regions examined.

Full textIn dissertation paper the conceptual bases of problem research are grounded and socially adaptive, personality and behavioral features of manifestation of emotional stability of artistically gifted person are empirically identified. Scientific understanding of peculiarities of interdetermination of emotional stability and social adaptability of artistically gifted person is deepened and conditionality content of manifestations of emotional stability by personality and behavioral characteristics of students of art specialties is verified on empirically diagnostic level. As result of empirical study it is proved, that social adaptability is conditioned by relevant manifestations of emotional stability of artistically gifted person in terms of its personality and behavioral characteristics; relevant to manifestation level of emotional stability levels (impulsive, compensational and balanced) and mechanisms (storing, mobilization and optimization) of social adaptability of artistically gifted person are established.
