Abstract:
The social changes experienced in many countries have prolonged the transition to adult life for young people. That being said, those who leave child care cannot afford this privilege, in that they do not benefit from the same support and resources, having to confront an accelerated transition which exposes them to increased risk of negative outcomes and social exclusion. Moreover, this transition might be even riskier for unaccompanied migrant care leavers, who are four times as vulnerable, given their status as young people in care, as adolescents, as migrants and being unaccompanied. This paper seeks to explore the profiles, needs, and experiences of unaccompanied young migrants in comparison with other care leavers. Data were collected by means of a semi-structured interview to explore their pre-care, in-care, and aftercare experiences. A highly specific profile of unaccompanied young migrants has been revealed that differs from the other care leavers in terms of worse educational, occupational, and economic outcomes, limited support networks, and more obstacles to accessing aftercare supports. Conversely, they also exhibited some strengths, such as having less pre-care, in care, and aftercare traumatic experiences, less psychological distress and fewer risky behaviors compared with other care leavers.

Abstract:
The quality of life of young adult residential care leavers is influenced by several factors. The impact of the residential care environment can be conceptualised as organisational culture. In our empirical study we explored how organisational culture affects the quality of life of care leavers. The research was conducted using a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods in 8 selected residential care facilities in Slovakia, and among 39 young care leavers. Data from semi-structured interviews were analysed using methods associated with grounded theory, and data obtained via questionnaires were analysed using statistical methods. The results show that adequate material conditions, adherence to facility rules, the space to act independently, responsive care, support in planning for the future, mutual assistance, and social support from peers and others are all likely to contribute to a higher quality of life for care leavers.

Abstract:
Young people leaving state care have been found to experience deficits in all aspects of their life cycle. These include homelessness, poor educational and employment outcomes, involvement in juvenile crime and prostitution, mental and physical health problems, early parenthood and inadequate social support systems. These poor outcomes experienced by care leavers result from a range of factors relating to their pre-care abuse and neglect, poor quality and unstable care history and inadequate support for their successful transition to independence. Young people leaving state care in Victoria are currently lacking the ongoing and guaranteed support that would be expected of a good parent. Using relevant local and international literature and findings from a qualitative study involving 10 care leavers, this paper examines the factors that contribute to negative as well as positive outcomes for young people leaving state care. Some conclusions are drawn regarding policy and practice reforms that could lead to improved outcomes for care leavers.

Abstract:
This small-scale study explored plans for four young people leaving care and the perspectives of twelve key adults supporting them. Using Fairclough’s model of critical discourse analysis, the rationale for this research was concern about the difference in outcomes between care leavers and young people in general. Aims were to explore if contradictions in plans and ideas contributed to problems for the young people, and to examine explanations and justifications made by the adult participants. Data were collected by semi-structured interviews from an opportunistic sample. Findings indicated that the established problem of young people having to leave care too early persists in spite of initiatives to prevent this happening. Theories drawn from the psychology of child development influence the professionals’ constructions of the young people, thereby limiting the responses which adults can offer. It is proposed that neoliberal discourses of individual responsibility and continuous self-improvement constrain systems which encourage young people to leave care before they are ready. Two concepts of chop (abrupt change, such as end of school phase) and churn (disruption, such as staff turnover) are used to examine how frequent disturbance in the life of a looked after child is exacerbated by points of rupture which are caused by the structures of children’s services. This study adds to calls for increased stability for young people, and recommends earlier planning for the future of young people in care. Implications for educational practice are presented, including the need to ensure that leaving mainstream education for segregated provision is not an irreversible decision. It is suggested that educators should consider critically the labelling of looked after children as having Special Educational Needs, as this can lead to practices which encourage compliance by young people, and pathologise resistance which could instead be re-framed as self-reliance.

Abstract:
The transition to adulthood is known to be a challenging period, particularly for care leavers who have been known to achieve poor outcomes. This study aimed to examine the Throughcare experience and outcomes achieved by young people who are simultaneously leaving care and experiencing depression. This study also adopted a multi-theoretical approach which accommodates both inner and external factors as potential elements which influence care leavers’ transitions. This theoretical position offered a useful approach for studying the multi-dimensional and complex reality of care leavers who suffer from depression. A qualitative methodological approach based on the constructivist paradigm was adopted for this study. Twenty seven young people who suffer from depression were interviewed and their data was complemented by information collected from seventeen key informants and a small group of young people leaving care who were not suffering from depression. The data was inductively analysed. The study found that some young people develop a material meaning of independence which leads them to disregard their mental health. This contributes to their inability to deal with problems and the difficult transitions they experience, where self-harm and suicide are often perceived as viable solutions for their problems. Poor mental health was also found to negatively impact on educational and work performance, school attendance, finding work, ability to maintain a job and perceptions of education and work. Other factors which impacted on education and work were attachment problems, inability to deal with simultaneous challenging problems, peer pressure, and the lack of appropriate formal and informal support. These young people also experienced poor housing outcomes, including the inability to sustain a tenancy, poor gate keeping, problems with neighbours and eviction leading to homelessness. Overall, the study concluded that care leavers with depression have specific vulnerabilities that contribute to difficult transitions to independent living. More attention needs to be paid to supporting these young people through strategic planning and policy, and investment in adequate resources to enable them to make successful transitions.

Abstract:
In plight of the country‟s high unemployment, poverty, and income inequalities, there is an urgent need to address these issues by converging toward entrepreneurship. World-wide, it is acknowledged by both government and academia that entrepreneurship soothes and remedies socio-economic ills. It creates employment, wealth, alleviates poverty, increases tax base, balances income disparities and accomplishes social stability. With the high youth (18-34 year age) unemployment looming at 73 percent and a low South African total entrepreneurship rate at 8.9 percent; this study attempts to investigate the barriers that hinder school leavers from engaging in entrepreneurship. The research investigates critical entrepreneurial factors including entrepreneurial character and behaviour, entrepreneurial knowledge and skills, managerial knowledge and skills, knowledge on legal aspects of a business, sourcing of finances, and entrepreneurial background and orientation. The primary objective was met through the investigation of the secondary objectives. This was accomplished through a questionnaire survey, composed with multiple choice questions and closed questions measured on a Likert scale. The questionnaire was constructed based on the literature reviewed from various sources including books, dissertations, journals, government reports, newspapers, magazines, internet, television and radio broadcasts (interviews and news). The study discovers that learners are inhibited by various factors from engaging into business venturing. The list of barriers identified was: A discouraging entrepreneurial background (heritage) – parents had low levels of education and were not entrepreneurial, Weak entrepreneurial character and behaviour, Lack of entrepreneurial exposure and work experience, Learners lack financial skills and computer skills, Families lack savings to financially support their business start-ups, Limited knowledge on the legal aspects regulating a business, Limited knowledge on sourcing finances (angel and venture capital investors).

Adolescents leave residential care when they reach the age or time limit for care. If their birth families are unable support them, they will most likely be forced to face the challenges of independent living. The realities and expectations young care leavers face and experienced are really worth studying and exploring. This study investigates the differences between services offered by an independent living program which the young care leavers received and their expectations. The data were from in-depth interviews with the young care leavers, responsible social workers and the internet information in one of the cities in central Taiwan. This study was interviewed with six young care leavers living independently and five social workers. The main results are as follows: (1)Services from independent living programs differ depending on the organization offering them. Contractors for independent living programs offer services such as transitional independent living dormitories, training in daily life arrangement, outdoor experience activities, work practice and internships. The services from independent living programs offered by independent organizations include: inter-organizational collaboration to help with the preparation of independent living, bonus systems to encourage independent living, training for financial management and independent living skills and events that lets people share their independent living experiences. The services offered by both kinds of organizations include: financial aid, rental assistance, regular follow-up on independent living status and the connection of community resources. (2)The independent living assistance services expected by young care leavers are to build independent living concepts and skills beforehand, necessary financial aid, assistance in continued education, to be free of restrictions in transitional dormitories, outdoor experience trainings to expand horizons, job matching services to make job hunting easier, stable emotional support and company, life and career planning and discussions to help them find their way and individualized services that listens to and understands them. (3)The differences between what adolescents expected and the reality of independent living assistance were: financial aid were not properly given, the many rules and restrictions for the independent living dormitories, the lack of career exploring and job matching, turnovers of the responsible social workers affected the building of trust in relationships and the adolescents are not truly understood, making it hard to provide individualized services.

Abstract:
M.A. (Clinical Social Work)
This qualitative study focuses on the description and assessment of care leavers’ application of social skills into independent living. Information was gathered through semi-structured interviews with open-ended questions. The sample comprised ten young men who had been in the care of GBTSA for at least two years and who left care at the age of 17-19 years between two and five years ago. Findings of the study indicate that care leavers are faced with ongoing challenges that force them to mature more quickly than their other peers. As a result, care leavers often have to rely on skills learned while in care in dealing with these challenges. Care leavers’ understanding of skills learned and how they have used the skills in their adult life were assessed based on their lived experiences. This was done through care leavers identifying the skills they remember learning and reflecting on how they have applied these skills in their adult lives. Based on the objectives of the study and its findings, recommendations are made which include: GBTSA to explore and develop a structured mentoring programme that can be incorporated with its independent living programme to provide ongoing support to care leavers. Concerns were identified in areas such as generalisation and internalisation of skills learned, applicability of skills in “real life” contexts and a need for an ongoing support base to motivate and encourage care leavers.

The present paper uses life course theory to explore the move toward 'independent living' required of young people leaving care in England and Wales. Informal interview contact with 14 young people who had recently left care was maintained over a period of 12-18 months. Biographical stories constructed from field research are used to consider the social and developmental processes of the life course. The contextual analysis formalized within life course theory focused on the social timing and social construction of independence, revealing the way in which important 'invisibilities' may have social and developmental consequences for care leavers.

The youngsters who are forced to leave home care programs are in need of further appropriate protection whenever they are not able to live with original families. At the age of fifteen to eighteen, those youngsters are facing difficulties in everyday life independently. They earn freedom and the right of decision-making autonomously, at the same time, they feel nervous and fearful on the unexpected future. The most important thing of all for those youngsters is to get a stable employment and earn good enough income. Although some of them benefit from the welfare services, majority of them have to work hard to earn their living. And there are many factors influencing their work life, including the right conception on workplace, the employability, their motivation, skill level, mentality, and their previous work experiences. It’s a hard task they need to confront with, and getting mature from within. Based on the semi-structured interviews with 10 youngsters who are out of home programs and in jobs, 10 employers and 10 social workers, I analyzed qualitatively the perspectives of those three groups, to realize the help those youngsters received and the contents how the youngsters help by themselves. In addition, what the strength and abilities the youngsters have, so they can get jobs and work stably, and go further their independent life in the future.

Abstract:
The results of the influence of the complex microbial preparations (CMP) on the formation of the winter wheat antioxidant protection system in case of soil contamination with Pb, Cu, Cr are presented. Soil contamination with HM led to an increase in the content of ascorbic acid, glutathione, and peroxidase in wheat leaves. The use of CMP for pre-sowing inoculation of seeds helps to reduce the content of these indicators in the leaves of plants. Thus, bacterization contributed to a decrease in the content of ascorbic acid in the leaves by 13-35%. There was also a decrease in the content of glutathione in the leaves of plants grown from inoculated seeds. It decreased by 14-32%, 12-25%, and 19-24% on the background of НM soil contamination at the level of 1, 2.5 and 5 MPC, respectively. Our studies have shown a decrease in the content of peroxidase in the leaves of bacterized wheat plants on the background of soil contamination at the level of 1, 2.5 and 5 MPC HM by 7–19%, 14-33%, and 25-49%, respectively. Thus, soil contamination with HM leads to an increase in the content of ascorbic acid, glutathione, and peroxidase in the leaves of young winter wheat plants. The use of CMP for pre- sowing inoculation of seeds helps to reduce the content of these indicators in the phytomass of plants. This indicates an increased plant resistance to oxidative stress caused by HM.

Abstract:
The topic of this paper could be irrelevant to well-developed and developing countries, however, it is quite challenging to educate students in privileged income developing countries in which all primary needs of education, health, shelter and basic needs (the base for Maslow’s hierarchy of needs) are taken care of by the government. This leaves little room for the young generation to aspire to. Insufficient internal drive to work hard or to prove oneself since all basic needs are taken care of and most of these students are coming from well-off families. This created a real dilemma for educators in how to motivate and encourage this generation to take education seriously and work hard towards their degree and appreciate this educational journey. This paper would discuss some of these motivational tools and a set of recommendations for the government on this issue.

Abstract:
The cucurbit family, including melon, translocates the galactosyl-sucrose oligosaccharides, raffinose and stachyose, in addition to sucrose, from the source leaves to the fruit sink. The metabolism of these photoassimilates in the fruit sink controls fruit growth and development, including the horticulturally important phenomenon of sucrose accumulation, which determines melon fruit sweetness. During this research project we have characterized the complete pathway of galactosyl sucrose metabolism in developing fruit, from before anthesis until maturity. We have also compared the metabolic pathway in scurose accumulating genotypes, as compared to non-accumulating genotypes. Furthermore, we studied the pathway in different fruit tissues, in response to pollination, and also analyzed the response of the individual steps of the pathway to perturbations such as low temperature and leaf removal. The results of our studies have led to the conclusion that generally galactosyl-sucrose metabolism functions as a coordinately controlled pathway. In one case, as an immediate response to the absence of pollination, the activity of a single enzyme, UDPglu pyrophosphorylase, was drastically reduced. However, during young fruit development, sucrose accumulation, and in response to perturbations of the system, groups of enzymes, rather than single enzymes, respond in a concerted manner. Our research has characterized in detail the initial enzymes of galactosyl-sucrose metabolism, including the galactosidases, galactokinase and the UDPgal- and UDPglu pyrophosphorylases. We have discovered a novel alkaline a-galactoside which hydrolyzes both stachyose and reaffinose and thereby may have solved the dilemma of cytosolic-sucrose metabolism, since prior to this research there was no known alkaline a-galactosidase capable of hydrolyzing raffinose.
