Moore, Lindsey Kathryn. "Family dynamics and students' characteristics as predictors of undergraduate college student adjustment." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2006. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc5258/.

Full text
Abstract:
The problem addressed is to ascertain how selected factors impacted the adjustment of undergraduate university students. Undergraduate university students (n=382) from the University of North Texas completed measures of basic student information, perceived level of family support and level of parental attachment, and perceived level of college student adjustment. Parental Attachment and Family Support were found to positively correlate to the level of adjustment to college. Analyses of these data reveal a statistically significant difference in student adjustment to college when comparing the participants by age, university classification, and living arrangement. Further analysis reveals that there is a statistically significant difference between gender, race, students' marital status, and parents' marital status when measuring the outcome of perceived family support. Perceived level of parental attachment differs significantly when comparing students by their race, marital status, and their parents' marital status.

Abstract:
The aims of the study were to investigate critical mathematical thinking in young students, and teaching actions/questions that help these young students exhibit their critical mathematical thinking. A key finding was the conceptualisation of a Critical Mathematical Thinking Framework for Young Students. This framework (a) articulates the key characteristics young students exhibit as they engage in critical mathematical thinking, and (b) can be used by teachers to help them identify critical mathematical thinking within the classroom context. Additionally, specific teacher questions that support young students to exhibit critical mathematical thinking were delineated. The study determined that teachers play a pivotal role in supporting young students to exhibit their critical mathematical thinking.

Reed, Sharon Faith Levin. "Teaching young students with autism to write." Thesis, Wichita State University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10057/5538.

Full text
Abstract:
Young students with autism and other developmental delays face specific challenges when learning to complete academic tasks, including writing. Through a single subject study, the author examined the use of multiple methods in teaching one kindergarten student with autism and one first grader with autism to write the letters in their names in capital letters without a model. Students were evaluated on letter use and letter legibility. One student was taught to build and identify letters with Handwriting Without Tears (HWT) (Olsen, 2008) sticks, use the HWT magnetic writing board, trace lines, trace their name, write their name with a model and write their name without a model. The other student was taught to write trace their name, write their name with a model and write their name without a model via video modeling. Both live and video modeling methods were found to be useful in advancing a student to more complex handwriting tasks. Both students in the study advanced – the student utilizing a live modeling method advanced two tasks and the student using a video modeling method advanced one. Both students showed improvement from initial baseline to post-test.

Gudmundsdottir, Helga Rut. "Music reading errors of young piano students." Thesis, McGill University, 2002. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=82885.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigated the music-reading errors of 6--13-year-old piano students (n = 35) as they read three unfamiliar musical pieces. The musical pieces were similar in terms of tonality, and rhythmic and melodic complexity, but differed in terms of simultaneity of left- and right hand and complexity of left-hand arrangement.
Pitch errors were examined in terms of frequency, placement, and type. Of all pitches played, 23% were incorrect pitches. However, 30% of the incorrect pitches were followed by an immediate correction (self-correction). There were significantly more errors made in the left-hand parts than in right-hand parts of all three pieces. The most common error type was erroneous pitches, followed by redundant and omitted pitch errors respectively. Erroneous pitches were significantly more often contour preserving than contour violating. The younger children made significantly more redundant pitch errors and contour violating pitch errors than did the older children and the younger children tended to make more self-corrections than did the older children.
Timing data were examined in terms of the length of performances and in terms of the length and frequency of pauses. No significant differences were found between pieces or age groups in terms of timing. A high frequency of pauses was noted in both age groups. Evidence drawn from pitch and timing errors suggested that the children in this study tried to play all the pitches in the score with little or no consideration for the rhythmic information in the score. This finding was in accordance with results of previous studies on children and music reading. Implications for music education and research are discussed.

Pfaller, Joan E. "Attachment style and family dynamics in young adults." Virtual Press, 1995. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/952810.

Full text
Abstract:
Two hundred thirty-eight undergraduates from a midwestern university completed the Hazan and Shaver Attachment Instrument to categorize themselves into three attachment styles: secure, insecure anxious/ambivalent, and insecure avoidant. They also completed the Parental Attachment Questionnaire (PAQ), The Family Adaptability and Cohesion Scales II (The FACES II), the Family Satisfaction Scale, and a Demographic Questionnaire. This study examined the attachment styles of undergraduates and measures of their parental attachments and family dynamics. It was hypothesized that the securely attached subjects would report significantly greater levels on three variables of parental attachment than would insecurely attached subjects. It was also hypothesized that securely attached subjects would report significantly higher levels on three variables of family dynamics than would insecurely attached subjects.Using multivariate analyses of variance designs, both hypotheses were supported. Subjects who were securely attached, when compared to those who were insecurely attached, reported significantly higher levels of parental attachment, in terms of: providing emotional support, fostering autonomy, and in the affective quality of their attachment to parents. Subjects who were securely attached, when compared to subjects who were insecurely attached, also reported significantly higher levels of adaptability, cohesion, and satisfaction in their families of origin. Results were discussed in relation to previous research on attachment styles and the studies of parental relationships and family dynamics in young adults. Methodological limitations were highlighted. Implications of this study and recommendations for future research were provided as well.

Bergvall, Victoria. "Young Swedish students' knowledge of English grammatical morphemes." Thesis, Karlstad University, Faculty of Arts and Education, 2007. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kau:diva-817.

Full text
Abstract:

Research has shown that children who have English as a first language acquire grammatical morphemes in a predictable order. Many researchers claim that second language learners also follow a predictable pattern when learning English grammatical morphemes regardless of their linguistic background, and that the same mechanisms are responsible for both first and second language acquisition.

The aim of this paper was to study Swedish students’ knowledge of English grammatical morphemes, and to compare their knowledge with that of second language learners from other countries as well as with that of first language learners.

The results show that Swedish students seem to acquire morphemes in a similar way to that of second language learners in general and that they make errors similar to those made by first language learners. For example, the copula was almost fully acquired, while the third person regular and irregular constituted a problem for the students. The most notable exception was the possessive ´s, which Swedish students seem to acquire at an early stage compared to other second language learners.

Abstract:
The use of, and attitudes towards, time management among undergraduates at Brigham Young University (BYU) was examined. Data were collected using two online surveys and an electronic time log tool. The data from the surveys were analyzed using canonical correlations, multiple regressions, multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), factor analysis, and multivariate graphical methods. Pilot survey results showed freshmen who were concerned with time management and organization had lower GPAs than those who asserted they were spontaneous and successful without time management. The main survey produced contradictory evidence, showing positive correlations for both freshmen and sophomores between GPA and students who agreed with self-descriptors that showed strong resolve for planning and structure. Time log data showed students on academic probation do not spend as much time on academic based activities as students in the control group. These findings suggest a need for further research into both BYU students' attitudes towards time management and the time use differences between high academically achieving students and students on academic probation.

Abstract:
This portfolio thesis consist of three parts; a systematic literature review, an empirical report and supporting appendices. Part one is a systematic literature review in which empirical papers that study the relationship between identity in adolescents and self-harm is reviewed. A systematic search of databases identified eight studies. A narrative synthesis of the findings was produced alongside the methodological quality of the articles. The implications of the review and directions for future research are discussed. Part two is an empirical paper which used a qualitative methodology to explore possible continua which exist in the narratives of university students who have experiences of self-harm. The paper used a categorical-content and holistic-form analysis to investigate the narratives. The findings are discussed and implications for future research proposed. Part three consists of the appendices which support the systematic literature review and the empirical paper. The appendices also include a reflective statement which focuses on the research process.

Abstract:
This thesis aims mainly at the representations, through words or images, which college freshmen make of the Internet. This paper has as a basic premise image as a visual representation, be it a drawing or a text, based on authors such as Ave Appiano, Erwin Panofsky, Jacques Aumont, Lorenzo Vilches, W. J. T. Mitchell, among others, who understand image and text as one unit. The research, developed with PUC-Rio students, used a methodological design developed over two successive periods. Firstly, an exploratory study was carried out on the use and the representations of different media, and, in particular, of the Internet, on the part of university students. Secondly, a qualitative investigation was carried out which used as data collecting strategies the focal experimentation groups proposed by Fern and Morgan and interviews. The data obtained through the query applied at the first stage of the investigation enabled eliciting the most frequent representations of the Internet, from a sample of 995 youths, which were used to trigger discussions carried out during the first part of the second stage, that of the focal groups whose members were chosen by intentional sampling. The second part of the group dynamics allowed the obtaining productions such as drawings or collages made by each and every member of the focal groups, representing what youths expect from the Internet. All these representations, expressed through words and/or images, were first analyzed specifically within each set. Based on studies such as those by Derrick de Kerckhove, Lev Manovich, Pier Cesare Rivoltella, Roger Fidler, Sherry Turkle, and Steven Johnson, an analysis was carried out of the crossing of all the empirical data collected; such analysis revolved around some thematic axes: the naturalization of the Internet, its symbolic representation in terms of speed, information, communication, entertainment, globalization, labyrinth and invisibility . The Internet is very present in the daily lives of these youths, which can be verified by the great attunement which they seem to have, besides a critical posture before the Internet, all taken as a unit. Positive and negative aspects of its use, its advantages and disadvantages, its limitations, its usefulness, even its dangers were elicited. This research also verified the evident change of daily school and social habits for these university students, confirming the importance of visual literacy, as defined by Donis Dondis, for this new manner of knowledge construction.

Who was Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophius Mozart? He was a child prodigy who dazzled Kings, Queens, Emperors and Empresses as a young boy and lead an remarkable life in his first ten years. The facts of Mozart’s childhood are known and available, however the vast majority of research is devoted to Mozart’s music, life and career during his adult years. Perhaps the time for a child to begin to realize the importance of Mozart in history would be to create a connection between young Mozart’s daily activities to a student of parallel age. The purpose of the study is to illuminate the life of the child prodigy Wolfgang Mozart using creative digital storytelling for elementary aged students. Due to the awarding of a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, research concerning Mozart’s rise and fall in fame was completed in Vienna, Austria, June 21 through July 16, 2010. The resulting focus of the research was to bring awareness to the minds of elementary students of Mozart’s child prodigy years. Using digital storytelling, listening maps, and composition projects, students will step into the world of Mozart as a composer and begin to relate his life to theirs. Data analysis will establish the effective use of digital storytelling to reveal the student’s ability to correlate the boyhood life of Mozart with the master composer. The study was completed in a pilot program in McPherson, Kansas in January 2011.

Wedin, Nadja, and Carolina Borbos. "Handelsbanken i Gävle : En studie om konsten att hitta rätt arbetskraft." Thesis, University of Gävle, Department of Business Administration and Economics, 2007. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hig:diva-96.

Full text
Abstract:

Mittuniversitetet i Sundsvall.

When it comes to a service company it is very important that one has good working

colleagues because their primary task is to serve the customers and to market the company.

The employee is working in the “front” and they are with the customers the most important

market for a company. Therefore it is necessary to hire the right employees with the right

quality from the beginning. This means that the companies have to be very careful and put a

lot of time and effort on the recruitment.

Urban Dalborg who is the personnel manager of Handelsbanken, tells us about his and

Handelsbanken´s problem with the misleading image that students have about them.

Consequently Handelsbanken´s problem to reach out to the right students as potential

employees. The purpose with our thesis is to investigate how Handelsbanken through the right

marketing can market them as an attractive place of work. To fulfil our purpose we have

examined the students understanding of Handelsbanken as a potential place of work, how

Handelsbanken can be able to attract young employee’s and how Handelsbanken can use

different way of marketing to reach out to students that fit in of their organisation. We have

delimited our study to the University of Gävle and the University of Sundsvall.

We have chosen to use both the qualitative and the quantitative methods to examine our

problem. The qualitative method which is carried out by interviews help us to get a deeper

knowledge about which different ways of marketing are available in the both schools. The

quantitative method has been conducted through a survey on students of both schools.

The conclusion of our study is that the students who do not have Handelsbanken as their bank

do not have any knowledge about the bank. This awareness affects students for not seeking

job in the Handelsbanken. 85 % of the students participating in the study could see them self

working at a bank in the future. Just 5 % can not see them selves in that kind of position and

the rest answer that they do not have a clue about their future. This shows that Handelsbanken

has a good chance to attract young competence when so many students can think to work at a

bank in the future.

However the study is not representative for all the students when we just have asked a part of

the students on two different schools.

The conclusion also includes which measure we would like to recommend Handelsbanken to

reach out to the right students as potential employees.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents three case studies in which comic-based digital storytelling is adopted as a means to support the reflection on particular situations involving conflicts. The potential of digital storytelling combined with the comic’s genre has been identified in previous works. Anyway, there is a need of empirical evidence on the advantages and disadvantages on which this approach can be based. Moreover, in most of the research, it has to be noted that digital comics have been identified, in the majority of the research, as a medium to access content, not to create them. Consequently, this thesis contributes to the investigation of employing digital storytelling based on comics informed by previous practices to narratives’ use. Therefore, the case studies are conducted to deeply explore how comic-based digital storytelling can support the reflection of significant troubling experiences. Quantitative and qualitative methods, related to both the user experience and the comics’ construction, are used, which show the benefits and drawbacks when adopting digital torytelling in the form of comics. Finally, the strengths and weaknesses of this approach are described in the conclusion. As a matter of fact, in the conclusion, we report a final reflection on the engagement, stakeholder involvement, collaboration, technology, comics, and reflection concepts while considering possible future works on the research topic.

Abstract:
Literature suggests positive relationships with caregivers during childhood facilitate intimacy in young adulthood. The three hypotheses in this inquiry related to the students' relationship between parental intimacy and friend intimacy, gender differences in intimacy, and the perceived acceptance of parents. Subjects were 322 male and female university students, aged 17 through 25 years. Most were single, white, and middle class. During class the Children's Report of Parental Behavior, the Miller Social Intimacy Scale, and a demographic sheet were administered. ANOVA revealed that relationships between parental intimacy and friend intimacy were not significant. Females reported greater intimacy with friends than males. For both sexes, correlations between recalled parental intimacy and acceptance were higher for mothers than fathers.

Abstract:
Using a qualitative approach, this study examines young Chinese students’ (born post 1985) perceptions of teamwork and how these perceptions change as a result of their experiences, whilst studying at a UK university. Built from deep and rich data collected from in-depth interviews with an experimental group of students, the research establishes that through direct communication with students from various cultural backgrounds during teamwork, the Chinese students adapt psychologically, cognitively and behaviourally to varying degrees. The decreased wariness of local and other international students and British university staff, increased self confidence and sense of achievement may be categorised as psychological adaptation. Changes are also revealed in their open mindedness, decreased ethnocentrism, increased cultural awareness, and attitudes towards time and assessment, opinions on abiding principles, that is following ethical and moral aspects and regulations. These may be labelled as cognitive adaptation. Further, changes are shown in their ways of expressing opinions, holding ground, handling uncertainties, mixing with local and international students, and studying autonomously. These may be termed as behavioural adaptation. The research finds that the extent of adaptation is moderated by their individual learning approaches, namely surface, deep and achieving. It stresses that creating optimal cultural synergy with diverse cultural contacts/exposure not only facilitates but maximises cultural adaptation, namely fitting in with new social and educational environment. The results are triangulated by the findings from a comparison group of similar students in China, with respect to age, gender and learning approaches, thus aiming to discount any bias. Implications arising from the study suggest that the internationalisation of education should enhance ‘cultural synergy’ so that both the local and international students can enrich their learning experiences and develop intercultural competence.

Abstract:
Whilst there are numerous studies on young people’s engagement in academic study, the internal relationship between young people and academic study is still unclear. This thesis seeks to explain the relation of young people to their academic study, in the context of Brunei Darussalam, through analysing young people’s motive hierarchy. The research is based on the understanding that young people are faced with multiple contradicting demands from the society, which evolve with their developmental age. The contradicting demands generate conflicts for young people as they participate across the different institutional practices in their everyday lives. The research entailed a semi-participatory research approach, which emphasised young people’s lived experiences, from a first-person perspective. Eight (8) young people aged 16-18 years who are studying for their GCE A Level examinations, played roles as both trained Student Researchers, as well as participants in this research. Data were collected from focus group discussions, annotated photo albums (MyAlbum) and a ‘participant self-generated’ questionnaire (MyQuestionnaire). The focus of the data collection was on the young people’s experiences of conflicts with respect to their academic study and the different agendas in their everyday lives. Intermediary tools were developed to focus the data analysis to identify motive-orientations and their relative importance in the construct of the motive hierarchy of a young person. An initial general model of motive hierarchy was developed from this study too. It is a societal demand for young people in late adolescence to be vocational and career oriented. However this study shows the eight (8) young people are also oriented towards other objects, apart from being future oriented. They can still have a dominant motive-orientation towards intimate personal relations, which usually prevails for early adolescence. Two other motive-orientations have also emerged from this study, i.e. the societal value system and self-comfort related. These different motive-orientations of the young people contradict the societal demands and create conflicts for the young people as they participate in and across the practices. These findings are important in informing intervention programmes to improve young people’s engagement in academic study.

Full text
Abstract:
Objective: The purpose of this study was to discover how college students conduct dinner groups and students' perceptions of the benefits and difficulties of participation. Design: Qualitative study conducted with seven focus groups. Setting: A university campus. Participants: Thirty-six college students participating in dinner groups. Dinner groups were defined as a group of ≥3 people cooking for each other (or together) and eating together ≥4 times a week. Analysis: The focus groups were recorded, transcribed, coded, and reconciled. NUDIST® NVivo software was used in identifying themes and subthemes. Results: Dinner groups were composed of roommates and/or other students living nearby. They rotated who made each dinner. Benefits identified included social interaction, increasing confidence in cooking, saving money and time, and eating more varied and healthier foods. Difficulties were mentioned but were much less common. They included increased time spent on days the student cooked and stresses related to cooking on a schedule. Students found that the benefits far outweighed the difficulties and universally wanted to continue in a dinner group. Conclusions and Implications: College students enjoy dinner groups and promoting them may be an option for improving college students' eating habits. Nearly all students felt that they ate better in a dinner group but research is needed to assess actual intake.

Abstract:
Mathematics could be described as a special kind of language, a discourse in which participants communicate abstract concepts. Communication and language are known to be important factors in teaching and learning but little is known about neither communication between students in relation to geometrical concepts, nor what traces of mathematical facts and understanding is incorporated into their communication. Such knowledge would contribute to teachers´ understanding of students’ knowledge of this aspect of mathematical thinking. The purpose of this study is to investigate young students’ communication in the Discourse of geometry. To accomplish this, Swedish students aged between ten and eleven were video-recorded while working with two assignments, one involving describing quadrilaterals to each other and the other sorting quadrilaterals. An analysis of the students’ communication has identified a number of issues that teachers could benefit from being aware of in their teaching of the concept of `geometrical figure´. Examples of issues identified being that conceptual characteristic remain too much in the background of what in the study has been called the visual shape. For example, a long and narrow shape of a geometrical figure seems to draw students’ attention. Students also seem to be having difficulty in understanding that naming a figure is a way of merging the figures´ definitions into one word, and there were problems with words that anchor in daily life.

Abstract:
Corrective feedback (CF) is regarded as a controversial topic when it comes to writing in the L2 classroom. Some researchers have found it to be both meaningless and harmful, while others have researched the effects of different types of CF and found it to be good for language development in several ways. This made us interested in conducting a study focusing on what attitudes grade 3-5 (age 9-11) teachers have concerning CF, and if they themselves use it for their L2 students’ writing. The study was conducted through five semi-structured interviews with teachers working in Lund, Sweden. The aim of the study was to investigate compulsory school teachers’ experiences of and thoughts on CF as a teaching method for improving young L2 learners’ writing. The results revealed that the teachers believe CF to be an irreplaceable part of language learning but that it should be adapted to each individual’s needs. Although all interviewed teachers acknowledged CF’s potential harm on learners’ motivation and willingness to write, no one believed that it could be left out completely.

Abstract:
Extensive documentation exists which firmly establishes the high use rates and disastrous consequences of alcohol consumption by university students. Use rates for this population have been linked to attitudes toward alcohol consumption, especially alcohol expectancies. Research to date on alcohol expectancies has shown differences in expectancies among various groups. However much of this research has been conducted without a theoretical basis, accomplishing little in explaining how beliefs and drinking behavior are related. The investigation was designed to explore the relationships among and between early recollections and alcohol expectancies and to explore how the contents of early recollections function in relation to expectancies in terms of alcohol consumption patterns among three groups of college males (student-athletes, fraternity men, and independents). The content of individuals' early recollections was analyzed and compared to expectancies and consumption rates for each of the three groups. The study addressed seven hypotheses regarding alcohol consumption rate comparisons, comparisons of consequences experienced as a result of alcohol consumption, comparisons of alcohol expectancies, and comparisons of reported content of early recollections. Multiple regression analysis was utilized to test the extent to which select early recollections and alcohol expectancy scores contributed to the explained variance in alcohol consumption patterns.

Abstract:
There is limited research that focuses on young Australian Indigenous students learning specific mathematical concepts (Meaney, McMurchy-Pilkington, & Trinick, 2012). To date, there has been no study conducted within an Australian context that considers how young Australian Indigenous students engage in mathematical generalisation of growing patterns. Mathematical growing patterns are a sequence of shapes or numbers characterised by the relationship between elements, which can increase or decrease by a constant difference (linear growing pattern). Additionally, growing patterns can also exhibit quadratic and exponential growth. The purpose of this study is to explore how young Australian Indigenous students generalise growing patterns. Patterns are a common route for young students to engage with in early algebraic thinking. Algebra has been labelled as a mathematical gatekeeper for all students, having the potential to provide both economic opportunity and equal citizenship (Satz, 2007). It has been proposed that algebra is one link in reducing the exacerbated inequalities between ethnicity and socioeconomic groups (Greenes, 2008). Concerns about students’ poor understanding of algebra in secondary school have contributed to early algebra becoming a focal point for mathematics education. Early algebra is its own unique subject, and is not to be confused with the teaching of algebra early. Rather, the concept of early algebra is integrated with other early mathematical concepts as students engage in the gradual introduction to formal notation (Carraher, Schliemann, & Schwartz, 2008). In addition, early algebraic thinking leads to a deeper understanding of mathematical structures (Blanton & Kaput, 2011; Carraher, Schliemann, Brizuela & Ernest, 2006; Cooper & Warren, 2011). Recent studies indicate that young students are capable of engaging with early algebraic concepts (e.g., Blanton & Kaput, 2011; Cooper & Warren, 2011; Cooper & Warren, 2008; Radford, 2010a; Rivera, 2006)...

Abstract:
Today’s journalism students are learning in a time in which new technology innovations, including online news sites, blogs, and social media, have become a prominent part of the journalism industry. Whether it’s newspapers, public relations, or broadcast, technology has become a part of every area of journalism. While several studies have focused on how journalism classes should be taught in lieu of this change, how students are learning and how they feel about this changing industry has yet to be shared. This research uses both a survey of 203 current, undergraduate pre-journalism students at a large, Southwestern university, as well as focus group interviews with several subgroups of 11 of those students. The results show, not surprisingly, that journalism students are heavy users of technology and social media. They also show that a majority of journalism students prefers consuming media online. However, although students use technology and social media frequently, and also consume media online, there is evidence that suggests that they would rather learn face-to-face with an instructor than take online classes. In addition, they feel positive about their future in the changing industry.

Vignare, Karen Kraus. "An Investigation of Traditionally-Aged College Students' Perceptions of the Community of Inquiry." NSUWorks, 2012. http://nsuworks.nova.edu/gscis_etd/330.

Full text
Abstract:
Online learning courses are taken by nearly 31% of college students (Allen & Seaman, 2011). The majority of those enrolled in online learning are graduate and non-traditional undergraduate students. Survey data from multiple sources show a growing number of traditional students enrolling in online courses or online only universities. There is a lack of information about younger college students enrolling in online courses and those attending online only institutions. Without more research on the perceptions of this population, it is difficult to design an effective online learning environment. The Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework has been used as a process model that defines, describes and measures the tasks supporting online learning. The core elements are the three overlapping presences of teaching, social and cognitive and the interrelationships among those presences. Through more than a decade of work on the framework, a methodology and survey instrument emerged for studying the potential and effectiveness of online learning. Will younger college students enrolling today perceive the CoI framework and the presences from the model, the same way that non-traditional students have in the last decade? Most CoI studies sample non-traditional adults aged 25 and older. American Public University System (APUS) is a for-profit online only institution which publishes research studies that contribute to the growing number of CoI studies available. In the last four years APUS has provided large samples to validate the CoI model and investigate how CoI relates to retention and course design. The limited purpose of the research is to determine whether the CoI framework and its current results, is applicable to a select group of traditional students aged 21 and under who enroll in only online courses APUS. Through an exploratory study using statistical tests including a factorial analysis, the first sample population (n=2,019) consisted of students', 21 and under, responses to the CoI questionnaire and the second sample (n=125,039) was the responses of students older than 21. The samples were compared to determine if there was any significant difference between the perceptions of non-traditional and younger college students on the CoI model. Results indicated that the comparative means of the two populations are highly correlated at .924 but the p value is .000 at the 95% confidence interval. The two populations are different. A factor analysis showed that both samples perceived a three factor solution. The total variance explained was very similar for both samples. For the students who were 21 and under, the three factors accounted for 77.16% of the total and for the older students, three factors accounted for 74.17% of the total. The factor analysis results from the younger students also show that each item from the questionnaire is associated with the appropriate factor. The factor analysis results correspond to previous validated research conducted on the CoI model. The results continue to support the validity of the CoI model, but the differences in the populations are significant. The significance tests are useful but may not be as meaningful as the factor analysis due to the size of the samples. This research adds to the body of knowledge on the CoI model, a dominant theory that describes what learners perceive in an online environment. The results inform the understanding of the CoI model as it applies to younger college learners' perceptions of an effective online learning environment.

Abstract:
The current generation of college students commonly use the Internet for sexual purposes (Boies, 2002; Boies, Cooper, & Osborne, 2004), including finding sexual partners, searching for sex-related information, and viewing sexually explicit materials (SEM) (Boies, 2002). Yet, some authors have suggested that the use of the Internet for sexual purposes might lead to psychological problems (Cooper et al., 2001). However, it is unclear if the problems that are commonly reported (i.e., Internet dependency, isolation, and psychological distress) are caused by using the Internet for sexual purposes. Hence, it is important to examine how college students use the Internet for sexual purposes cross-culturally to determine how common the practice is, how it relates to maladjustment, and to examine if any culture variables are associated with use. Undergraduate students (n = 320) from a public university in the United States and Peruvian undergraduate students (n = 135) from a public university in Lima, Peru filled out questionnaires addressing their online sexual activities, psychological adjustment, and family communication. Peruvian young adults used the Internet significantly more than U.S. young adults to view SEM, find sexual partners, and search for sex-related information. Men, regardless of nationality, used the Internet to view SEM significantly more than women. Peruvian women used the Internet significantly more to view SEM and find sexual partners than U.S. women. Social support, religiosity, and erotophilia were found to moderate the relations between nationality and OSA. Further, for Peruvians and U.S. young adults, using the Internet for OSA was associated with mild distress, but no serious psychological maladjustment. Implications for college students are discussed.

Jackson, Brian D. "Island of Tranquility: Rhetoric and Identification at Brigham Young University During the Vietnam Era." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2003. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/4819.

Full text
Abstract:
The author argues that beyond religious beliefs and conservative politics, rhetorical identification played an important role in the relative calmness of the BYU campus during the turbulent Sixties. Using Bitzer's rhetorical situation theory and Burke's identification theory, the author shows that BYU's calm campus can be explained as a result of communal identification with a conservative ethos. He also shows that apparent epistemological shortcomings of Bitzer's model can be resolved by considering the power of identification to create salience and knowledge in rhetorical situations. During the Sixties, BYU administration developed policies on physical appearance that invited students to take on a conservative identity, and therefore a conservative behavior. Relationships of power and hierarchy at BYU can be understood not as quantitative and oppressive matrices, but as rhetorical choices of students to identify with the character of school president, Ernest Wilkinson, and the administration. Power, then, is as Foucault envisioned it—as a field wherein identity and discourse are negotiated. This thesis argues for a more broad understanding of identification, ethos, and power for explaining rhetorical behavior in communal situations.
