Abstract:
Today, the methodological basis of disease prevention among various categories of the population, including students, is an innovative area of medical science and health care practice, namely medicine of borderline conditions. The development of a system of prenosological diagnosis of pathological conditions in young students and their hygienic correction for disease prevention are important both from a scientific and practical point of view. The study was conducted in the conditions of a natural experiment on the basis of three types of educational institutions, at the place of study of representatives of both sexes aged 14 to 23 years, adolescents and yound adults. In order to achieve the relevant objectives, the study used the following methods: analytic addressed at the study of educational programs, curricula, schedules, profile and regulatory documents; sanitary-hygienic; psychophysiological; psychological, statistic. Set of risk factors related to the educational process among young people studying in three types of educational institutions – secondary educational institutions, higher educational institution, Professional Agrarian Lyceum was analyzed. It is established that unfavorable living conditions affect donosological mental states of asthenic, hypochondriac and depressive nature.

Abstract:
AimsSuicide is one of the leading causes of death in young people living in Australia, accounting for 7.3% of all deaths among individuals aged 15–19 years. Historically, high levels of suicide have been recorded in Australian university students. This project aims to develop and test a massive online course-program (MOOC) for university students, underpinned by literature and strength-based suicide prevention principles, building resilience and awareness of mental health promoting activities.MethodA scoping review of the literature was undertaken to explore the effectiveness of current suicide prevention programs for undergraduate university students, and the effective elements contributing to the success of these programs. Six electronic databases were searched to identify relevant literature. Further, mental health consumers and university students were involved in co-producing the content of the six modules of the ‘Talk-to-me' MOOC.ResultNine articles were included in the review, discussing four types of programs including; gatekeeping, education, promotional messaging and online consultation. It was apparent from this review that there is a significant dearth of interventions and programs currently available to reduce the risk of suicide among undergraduate students, with many of the programs having limited efficacy. Despite this, a number of program elements were identified as beneficial to preventing suicide among post-secondary students including upskilling of students, and improving resilience, and self-management. These findings and further consultation with mental health consumers and undergraduate university students underpinned the development of the content of the ‘Talk-to-me' MOOC which is tailored to meet the needs of university students. The MOOC contains six modules: Mental fitness; strategies to increase mental fitness; self-harm; suicidal behaviour in young adults; interventions for suicidal behaviour; and, gatekeeper interventions. Two case study senarios depicting mental health challenges commonly experienced by yound adults portraying appropriate crisis communication skills were developed and filmed complementing the six ‘Talk-to-me' modules.ConclusionOverall, studies included in the review provide evidence to suggest that preventative programs, incorporating an educational component may be effective to be used in the MOOC to improving help-seeking behaviours among post-secondary education students. Findings from this review have underpinned the development of the ‘Talk-to-Me' MOOC which was launched in March 2020. To date this MOOC has enrolled over 45,000 participants from over 150 countries, with the average age of users being 24 years. Collectively, this line of work highlights that MOOCs are an effective means of mental health promotion to young adults.

Abstract:
The aim of the study is to assess the variability of morphofunctional indi-cators of masculinity among students in Belarus over time and depending on the level of physical fitness. The research was carried out in the years between 2016–2021 in Minsk (Republic of Belarus). The sample consisted of 233 students (102 young men, 131 young women) aged 18 to 22. The materials of our research of 180 stu-dents (125 young men and 65 young women) of the Belarusian State University of Physical Culture were also used. The material used for comparison was the archival data of the Department of Anthropology of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus from the period 2000–2007: a total of 243 students in Minsk (98 young men, 145 young women).Anthropometric measurements of body length, body weight, shoulder width, pelvic width, waist circumference, hip circumference, tense shoulder cir-cumference, relaxed shoulder circumference, length of the second and fourth fin-gers of both hands, wrist dynamometry of the right and left hand were carried out. The morphological indices were calculated. It was revealed that modern young men have more waist circumference and than young men of the beginning of the XXI century. In young women, waist circumference and body weight showed greater stability. The width of the pelvis, like that of both sexes, has decreased from the beginning of the 21th century to the present. In modern young men, disharmony of physique due to excess body weight in relation to its length occurs more often than at the beginning of the century. The indicators of wrist dyna-mometry among modern Belarusian students have become lower compared to the beginning of the 2000s. The young men and women involved in physical cul-ture had a significantly lower 2D:4D for the left hand and right hand than those who have a lower level of physical fitness. Thus, the features of the temporal variability of young students in Belar-us of such indicators as waist circumference, pelvic width and dynamometry (strength capabilities) were revealed, which were reflected in the dynamics of morphological indices of masculinity

Moore, Lindsey Kathryn. "Family dynamics and students' characteristics as predictors of undergraduate college student adjustment." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2006. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc5258/.

Full text
Abstract:
The problem addressed is to ascertain how selected factors impacted the adjustment of undergraduate university students. Undergraduate university students (n=382) from the University of North Texas completed measures of basic student information, perceived level of family support and level of parental attachment, and perceived level of college student adjustment. Parental Attachment and Family Support were found to positively correlate to the level of adjustment to college. Analyses of these data reveal a statistically significant difference in student adjustment to college when comparing the participants by age, university classification, and living arrangement. Further analysis reveals that there is a statistically significant difference between gender, race, students' marital status, and parents' marital status when measuring the outcome of perceived family support. Perceived level of parental attachment differs significantly when comparing students by their race, marital status, and their parents' marital status.

Abstract:
The aims of the study were to investigate critical mathematical thinking in young students, and teaching actions/questions that help these young students exhibit their critical mathematical thinking. A key finding was the conceptualisation of a Critical Mathematical Thinking Framework for Young Students. This framework (a) articulates the key characteristics young students exhibit as they engage in critical mathematical thinking, and (b) can be used by teachers to help them identify critical mathematical thinking within the classroom context. Additionally, specific teacher questions that support young students to exhibit critical mathematical thinking were delineated. The study determined that teachers play a pivotal role in supporting young students to exhibit their critical mathematical thinking.

Reed, Sharon Faith Levin. "Teaching young students with autism to write." Thesis, Wichita State University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10057/5538.

Full text
Abstract:
Young students with autism and other developmental delays face specific challenges when learning to complete academic tasks, including writing. Through a single subject study, the author examined the use of multiple methods in teaching one kindergarten student with autism and one first grader with autism to write the letters in their names in capital letters without a model. Students were evaluated on letter use and letter legibility. One student was taught to build and identify letters with Handwriting Without Tears (HWT) (Olsen, 2008) sticks, use the HWT magnetic writing board, trace lines, trace their name, write their name with a model and write their name without a model. The other student was taught to write trace their name, write their name with a model and write their name without a model via video modeling. Both live and video modeling methods were found to be useful in advancing a student to more complex handwriting tasks. Both students in the study advanced – the student utilizing a live modeling method advanced two tasks and the student using a video modeling method advanced one. Both students showed improvement from initial baseline to post-test.

Gudmundsdottir, Helga Rut. "Music reading errors of young piano students." Thesis, McGill University, 2002. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=82885.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigated the music-reading errors of 6--13-year-old piano students (n = 35) as they read three unfamiliar musical pieces. The musical pieces were similar in terms of tonality, and rhythmic and melodic complexity, but differed in terms of simultaneity of left- and right hand and complexity of left-hand arrangement.
Pitch errors were examined in terms of frequency, placement, and type. Of all pitches played, 23% were incorrect pitches. However, 30% of the incorrect pitches were followed by an immediate correction (self-correction). There were significantly more errors made in the left-hand parts than in right-hand parts of all three pieces. The most common error type was erroneous pitches, followed by redundant and omitted pitch errors respectively. Erroneous pitches were significantly more often contour preserving than contour violating. The younger children made significantly more redundant pitch errors and contour violating pitch errors than did the older children and the younger children tended to make more self-corrections than did the older children.
Timing data were examined in terms of the length of performances and in terms of the length and frequency of pauses. No significant differences were found between pieces or age groups in terms of timing. A high frequency of pauses was noted in both age groups. Evidence drawn from pitch and timing errors suggested that the children in this study tried to play all the pitches in the score with little or no consideration for the rhythmic information in the score. This finding was in accordance with results of previous studies on children and music reading. Implications for music education and research are discussed.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper describes an innovative, three-day, turbomachinery research project for Japanese and British high-school students. The project is structured using modern teaching theories which encourage student curiosity and creativity. The experience develops team-work and communication, and helps to break-down cultural and linguistic barriers between students from different countries and backgrounds. The approach provides a framework for other hands-on research projects which aim to inspire young students to undertake a career in engineering. The project is part of the Clifton Scientific Trust’s annual UK-Japan Young Scientist Workshop Programme. The work focuses on compressor design for jet engines and gas turbines. It includes lectures introducing students to turbomachinery concepts, a computational design study of a compressor blade section, experimental tests with a low-speed cascade and tutorials in data analysis and aerodynamic theory. The project also makes use of 3D printing technology, so that students go through the full engineering design process, from theory, through design, to practical experimental testing. Alongside the academic aims, students learn what it is like to study engineering at university, discover how to work effectively in a multinational team, and experience a real engineering problem. Despite a lack of background in fluid dynamics and the limited time available, the lab work and end of project presentation show how far young students can be stretched when they are motivated by an interesting problem.

Abstract:
The article considers the organization of psychological and pedagogical work with first-year students. It is established that during the period of studentship young people are included in the system of relationships in a new social adult environment. In this regard, it is very important that young people are actively involved in the educational process in higher education institutions, successfully coping with the requirements for learning, receiving a set of necessary competencies that can be successfully applied in practice in the future. The main problems arising in the first-year students are outlined: the new system of education; a different mode, loading and requirements; a new social role; relationships with fellow students and teachers; problems in social and everyday life; independent life in the new conditions for nonresident students.Analysis of the scientific literature allowed us to conclude that a significant potential for solving the problem of student adaptation in higher education is social advertising.

Full text
Abstract:
Proponents of hybrid learning proclaim it to be an effective and efficient way of expanding course content that supports in-depth delivery and analysis of knowledge (Young, 2002) and increases students satisfaction (Campos & Harasim, 1999; Dziuban & Moskal, 2001; Rivera, McAlister, & Rice, 2002; Wu & Hiltz, 2004). In the years to come, hybrid learning is poised to cause a paradigm shift in higher education (Allen & Seaman, 2003; Lorenzetti, 2005; Young, 2002). Graham B. Spanier, president of Pennsylvania State University, was quoted in Young (2002) as saying that hybrid learning presents “the single-greatest unrecognized trend in higher education today.” This benefits of online and hybrid learning have been recognized by the State of Maryland. In a move to stimulate the use of alternative delivery methods, the regents of the University System of Maryland instituted a policy in 2005 that all students take on average 12 of their credits through out-of-classroom experiences and other nontraditional means. Included in the regents' definition of out-of-classroom experiences are e-learning, internships, student teaching, and a host of other activities. Diana G. Oblinger, vice president of Educause, was cited in Lorenzetti (2005) as saying that the Maryland system is recognizing that some online learning is an enhancement to students’ higher-education learning experiences even when those students are full-time on-campus residents. She asserted that the Maryland initiative indicates, and will result in, tangible growth in the hybrid learning model. This paper presents the findings of a study that examined student perceptions of hybrid business courses at a historically black university that operates within the University System of Maryland. Founded in 1886, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) is a historically black, 1890 land grant institution and a member of the thirteen-campus University System of the State of Maryland.

As participants, underprivileged adolescents took part in order to learn the handling of IT applications and therefore, improve their job skills and have a better chance to get into employment. Therefore the adolescents do the role of trainees at the course. Our students worked with a population that is continually overlooked by the field. As a result, the students trained to design and implement training courses, exercised to manage projects and increased their social responsibility and awareness concerning the way of life and living conditions of other young people. The underprivileged adolescents learned to use important business applications and increased their job skills and job chances. The overall design of our concept required extensive resources to supervise and to steer the students and the adolescents. The lecturers had to teach and to counsel the students and had to be on “stand-by” just in case they were needed to solve critical situations between the two groups of young people.

Abstract:
Technology in the modern age is used in various sectors, particularly screen technology, usually in many everyday devices such as smartphones, personal computers, tablets, and smartwatches. Most of the consumer products used in this current age have a screen interface and are abundantly distributed to the public. This study investigated the connection between the rapid availability of digital screen devices and vision problems in young adults. One hundred and two students and twelve vision care experts participated in the study. Results revealed that about 59% of the students experienced a worse vision from 2015 to late 2021. About 73% of these student respondents affirmed using a smartphone as the primary digital screen device for 5-6 hours daily, and 37% confirmed to have experienced eye dryness and irritation during COVID-19. Vision care experts confirmed treating many young adult patients with vision-related issues in the past five years compared with a decade ago. About 58% of the vision experts believe blue light filters will reduce visual degradation when over exposed to digital screens. This area of study needs empirical research to ascertain other health hazards associated with the new technology evolving in our daily activities.

Cordero, Eugene, and Kiana Luong. Promoting Interest in Transportation Careers Among Young Women. Mineta Transportation Institute, November 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.31979/mti.2021.2028.

Full text
Abstract:
Transportation remains the largest source of U.S.-based carbon emissions, and reducing emissions from this source continues to challenge experts. Addressing challenging problems requires diverse modes of thinking—and at present the transportation workforce is not diverse in terms of gender, with women occupying only about 14% of the transportation workforce. This research developed and tested a school-based intervention that uses pro-environmental framing and exposure to women transportation role models to help attract more women to transportation careers. To investigate the efficacy of the intervention, the research team studied control and treatment groups of university students using pre- and post-surveys to measure changes in student understanding and interest in transportation fields and careers. Students in both groups were enrolled in a climate change course, and students in the treatment group completed an additional transportation learning module designed to stimulate interest in transportation careers. The results showed that by the end of the semester, student awareness that the transportation industry can provide green and sustainable careers increased by 39.7% in the treatment group compared to no change in the control group. In addition, student openness to working in a transportation related career increased by 17.5% for females in the treatment group compared to no change in the male treatment group and no change in the control group. Given the success of this intervention, similar educational modules at various educational levels could increase the number of women working in transportation. Should such approaches be successful, society will be better prepared to respond to environmental challenges like climate change.

Abstract:
This digest describes the use of think-aloud protocols with young bilingual children. Qualitative findings from a small study with 12 first through third grade students in dual language programs demonstrated that think-alouds were used effectively with elementary school emergent bilingual learners. The evidence from this study suggests that instruction in reading strategies should be given to young bilingual students and that more research needs to be done in this area.

Abstract:
There is seemingly an abundance of leadership opportunities available to youth within school environments, including sport captaincy, sport coaching, prefect roles, and assigned arts or cultural leadership. For many students, the opportunity to captain a sports team, or lead an event or activity is perceived as their first taste of leadership action. However, as evidenced in a growing body of literature (Jackson & Parry, 2011), leadership is increasingly being conceived as much more than an assigned formal position. Furthermore, there is some evidence to suggest that formal leadership roles may be presenting barriers for students wishing to access leadership opportunities in a more informal capacity (McNae, 2011). In this conceptual article, we examine the value and nature of informal leadership practices, and from this, identify questions of access to leadership for youth in secondary school settings. Specifically, the aim of our paper is to advance current conceptualisations about youth leadership and to offer future research directions (via questions) to establish a deeper evidence base for better understanding access to leadership for youth. To achieve this, we explore three interrelated themes: leadership practices and accessibility for youth; learning through leadership for youth; youth access and the notion that leadership belongs to everybody. As a result of the platform provided by our conceptualising, a series of questions are presented for future research. Directions for future research relate to understanding more about formal and informal leadership opportunities in the secondary school context, what we will hear when we listen to the student’s voice about access to these opportunities, and how informal leadership opportunities might influence overall access to leadership for students.

Abstract:
A growing interest in Two-Way Bilingual Immersion (TWBI) programs has led to increased attention to bilingualism, biliteracy, and biculturalism. This article describes the writing development in Spanish and English for 49 kindergarten students in a 50/50 Two-Way Bilingual Immersion program. Over the course of an academic year, the authors collected writing samples to analyze evidence of cross-linguistic resource sharing using a grounded theoretical approach to compare and contrast writing samples to determine patterns of cross-linguistic resource sharing in English and Spanish. The authors identified four patterns: phonological, syntactic, lexical, and metalinguistic awareness. Findings indicated that emergent writers applied similar strategies as older bilingual students, including lexical level code-switching, applied phonological rules of L1 to their respective L2s, and used experiential and content knowledge to write in their second language. These findings have instructional implications for both English Learners and native English speakers as well as for learning from students for program improvement.

Abstract:
Qubit by Qubit’s Middle School Quantum Camp is one of the first opportunities for students as young as eleven to begin learning about the field of quantum computing. In this week-long summer camp, students learn about key concepts of quantum mechanics and quantum computing, including qubits, superposition, and entanglement, basic coding in Python, and quantum gates. By the end of the camp, students can code quantum circuits and run them on a real quantum computer. The Middle School Quantum Camp substantially increased participants’ knowledge about quantum computing, as exhibited by large gains on a technical assessment that was administered at the beginning and end of the program. On a survey of student motivation, students in the program showed a statistically significant increase in their expectancy of being successful in quantum computing and valuing quantum computing. Students experienced a significant increase in their sense of belonging in STEM and quantum computing following the camp. The camp substantially increased students’ interest in taking additional coursework in STEM and quantum, as well as pursuing careers in STEM and quantum computing.

Ahluwalia, Manvir, Katie Shillington, and Jennifer Irwin. The Relationship Between Resilience and Mental Health of Undergraduate Students: A Scoping Review. INPLASY - International Platform of Registered Systematic Review and Meta-analysis Protocols, July 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.37766/inplasy2022.7.0075.

Full text
Abstract:
Review question / Objective: The aim of this scoping review was to examine what is known about the relationship between the resilience and mental health of undergraduate students enrolled in university or college programs globally. Background: For many undergraduate students, higher education acts as a personal investment in preparation for the workforce, while ultimately allowing students to develop cultural capital (Kromydas, 2017). The transition to university or college is also accompanied by important life changes such as moving to a new campus, meeting new people, and increasing self-efficacy to maintain independent responsibilities (i.e., meeting deadlines, completing household chores, and managing expenses; Henri et al., 2018). As a result, navigating these life changes can contribute to feelings of isolation, as many undergraduate students are disconnected from their friends and families (Diehl et al., 2018). Saleh and colleagues (2017) found that young adults in university or college experience higher levels of stress compared to their non-student counterparts. These stressors are attributed to a more challenging workload compared to that of high school, living with new roommates, and financial concerns (Karyotaki et al., 2020). In the face of these stressors, many undergraduate students are likely to experience mental health challenges either for the first time or in an exacerbated manner, potentially depleting their resilience (Abiola, 2017).
