Albeck-Gidron, Rachel. "The Holocaust as a Changing Presence in Yoel Hoffmann’s Texts." Universität Potsdam, 2011. http://opus.kobv.de/ubp/volltexte/2011/5330/.

Abstract:
Yoel Hoffmann is an Israeli writer born in 1937 in Brasov (Kronstadt), Romania. Brought up in a German-speaking family, already in his first book, Sefer Yosef (1989), he conveys the voice of German-speaking immigrants in Israel (the “Katschen” story, 1986) and that of the East European Jewish community in Berlin in the late 1930s, on the verge of the Second World War. His works are crammed with characters of Jews from Germany gripped by the memory of the language they abandoned following their emigration to Palestine in the 1930s. The classic one is the character of Bernhard, in the eponymous work. The current article focuses on the representation and elaboration of Hoffmann’s unique creation, in a language influenced by his deep identification with Zen Buddhism on the one hand, and his attraction to the modernist, Western style of stream of consciousness on the other. In central sections of his works, Hoffman presents his entire literary corpus as a type of explicit, allusive, or secret Holocaust literature, and invites his readers and his critics to decode the allusions and expose the secret in this theme, a surprising statement in relation to Hoffmann’s work and its analysis so far. Hoffmann represents the Holocaust as a collective Israeli trauma for which his literary fiction creates a special catalogue of representative characters. In the creation of a catalogue, and particularly one that simultaneously classifies and individualizes, Hoffmann’s project resembles the monumental 1920s cataloguing project by the celebrated German photographer August Sander (Menschen des 20. Jahrhunderts). Hoffmann included photographs from this project in his works, and even chose some of them for the covers of his books. The article examines the implicit relationships between these two creative artists as conferring a meaning so far not considered in the research of the Holocaust theme in Yoel Hoffmann’s writings.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to examine the experiences of the resistance committees organized by a revolutionary Movement, Devrimci Yol (Revolutionary Way), in Turkey in the late 1970s. More specifically it focuses on Devrimci Yol&rsquo
s formulations concerning the issue of revolutionary organization, how it and the resistance committee experiences &ndash
within their contexts- embodied the tension between being organized in accordance with initiating change within the social relations of everyday life and being organized in accordance with a strategy of state takeover. The study argues that Devrimci Yol&rsquo
s attempt towards the reconciliation of these two understandings gave the Movement its peculiarity within the left in Turkey. With all their constraints the resistance committees and accompanying experiences of people&rsquo
s and workplace committees pointed out a logic of revolutionary organization different from the predominant one in which any kind of revolutionary transformation was postponed until the forthcoming revolution. When examining Devrimci Yol and the resistance committees, the study refers to different approaches to the question of revolutionary organization in Marxist theory and practice.

Marshall, Daniel James. "Practitioners in the youth justice system : a case study of the youth offending service." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2013. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/256812.

Full text
Abstract:
The central aim of this descriptive and exploratory study is to empirically examine the views and perspectives of practitioners working with young people in the youth justice system in England and Wales. Based on a case study of Peterborough youth offending service (PYOS), the study adopts a multi-method approach. Interviews with 22 practitioners, observations of their practice and key documentary evidence are reviewed, which identify the processes involved in the core practice of key practitioners and a deeper understanding of how policy and legislation reform are experienced in practice. Practitioners play key roles as case managers in the intervention process, yet youth justice literature somewhat neglects the role and perspective of staff within multi-agency youth offending teams (Case, 2007), despite increasing focus on youth justice practice through organisational analyses (see for example, Burnett and Appleton, 2002; 2004a; Field, 2007; Holdaway et al., 2001; Newburn et al., 2002; Souhami, 2007; Stahlkopf, 2008), and much critique of youth justice policy in England and Wales (see for example, Goldson, 2002; Goldson and Muncie, 2006; Pitts, 2003; Smith, 2007). The central argument of this thesis is that knowledge (what is known about effective practice) is not applied effectively in practice. Questions are raised regarding the use of professional discretion and the accountability of practitioners working with young offenders within a perceived managerialist process which neglects individuals needs in favour of achieving targets and performance measures. The findings of this study support the view that the use of standardised assessment tools increase accountability of practitioners whilst reducing their professional discretion, which constrains practice. A lack of structural support created a cultural divide between management and practitioners, which further confounded their practice. Practitioners face a multitude of obstructions to their work with young people, which seem to be further rooted in the prioritisation of recording information and meeting targets, which results in less time attributed to planning and delivering interventions. In a climate of uncertainty for the youth offending service (YOS), in which doubts about its future are frequently raised and further reductions are made to YOS budgets, there is increased need for well-informed and supported practitioners to be working with young people who offend.

Trentini, Chiara.

Full text
Abstract:

Jonsson, Herbert. "Haikai Poetics : Buson, Kitō and the Interpretation of Renku Poetry." Doctoral thesis, Stockholm University, Department of Oriental Languages, 2006. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-1322.

Full text
Abstract:

The dissertation is a study of the poetics of haikai in eighteenth-century Japan. It is more specifically concerned with the works of Yosa Buson and some of his followers. Rather than being a study of certain poems, it is an investigation of theories of aesthetics and composition, and of criticism. Most studies of haikai focus on the short haiku (or hokku) form, but the present study is more concerned with the core form of this poetry, the long chains of verses called "renku" or "haikai no renga".

One important object of this study is to challenge some of the established views of haikai found in modern scholarship. For this purpose, many standpoints of haikai theory have been found useful, since they often approach questions of interpretation from new and unexpected angles. Theoretical stances that stress convention and traditionalism are criticized and the spirit of haikai is found to be more in concord with theories of cognitive poetics.

The dissertation consists of three parts. The first is a study of general haikai theory. In this part are discussed theories of aesthetics, theories of creativity, and a few questions related to the interpretation of this kind of poetry. This discussion focuses on those questions that are central in Buson’s own writing on poetics and puts them into a broader context.

The second part deals with practical theories of renku composing. An introductory chapter gives a historical background to many concepts used in Buson’s age, and this is followed by a full translation and critical study of a renku treatise written by his disciple Takai Kitō.

The last part is an investigation of modern criticism written on Buson’s renku. All existing full-length studies of these poems are discussed in comparison. The absence of a long critical tradition concerning Buson’s renku has, in many cases, prevented the formation of established interpretations, and this is ideal for a study of this kind.

Yosa Buson (1716-1783), a Nanga painter of the Edo Period, signed “Sha’in” after his 63, and his career from 1778 to 1783 is called the “Sha’in Peroid.” During this period, his paintings showed more and more spontaneous and free expression. However, there are two main styles in the “Sha’in Peroid.” One is known as spontaneous ink expression, such as Houses on Snowy Night, Peaks of Mount Gabi and Kite and Crows. The other type is the works which used delicate strokes and quoted Chinese classic allusions. The two completely different styles show that Buson had been working on Chinese style even when he stepped on a new stage of career. Buson’s versatility in his late life, however, is not familiar to many modern viewers. This study aims at showing both sides of Buson’s late styles by discussing the painter’s snowy and night scene paintings. By viewing the various characteristics of Buson’s works, we will understand the styles of his late life deeper.

Buson Yosa is a famous haiku poet and painter of the Edo period. In his haiku, there are fourteen haiku that include the word “otonashi (soundless)”. But in the haiku of Matsuo Basho who is similarly the representative haiku poet of the Edo period, there is no example of “otonashi(soundless)”. We want to clarify the purpose that Buson used a lot of this word, and the characteristic of the haiku that include the word. In addition, because the word ”otonashi (soundless)” usually express “quiet”, we also want to discuss the haiku that deny the thing that emit sound, the haiku that enhances quiet by a sound that can be heard, and last the haiku that include the word that express quiet like “shizuka(quiet)”. First in the chapter 2, we discuss the haiku that include the word “otonashi (soundless)” or “koenashi (voiceless)”. We classify these haiku into “there is no sound of rain”,” there is no sound of water”,” there is no sound of wind” et cetera. In the chapter 3, we discuss the haiku that deny the thing that emit sound. We classify these haiku into the haiku that relate to an animal such as bush warbler or a deer, the haiku that relate to personnel affairs like “song” “iwanu (do not say)” “kikanu(do not hear)”. In the chapter 4, we discuss the haiku that enhances quiet by a sound that can be heard. We classify these haiku into “animals ” and “the others ”. In the chapter 5, we discuss the haiku t included the word that express quiet like “shizuka (quiet)” or “loneliness”. We classify these haiku into the haiku that describe “the human movement”, “the change of the things” and “the stationary existence”. Buson is not only a haiku poet but also a painter. He can describe the thing which remails stationary in quiet like the screen of the image. In addition, he catches moving things and changing things surely delicately in stillness. He recognizes beauty of the quiet and took it in in a haiku and wrote it.
