This study brings an analyses of the corporal meaning of being an yogi. By the personal itinerary and the teachings of an Yoga teacher and his students, I observed an world view centered in the self and built always in reference to the body. In this context, I associated the yogi world view with that Dumont called romantic individualism. I named as modern romantic search the speech of the reviving #tradition#. Speech which is built against a body centered Yoga. This work may contribute to anthropologic studies about representation of the body and to the new age cam of studies.

Abstract: Yoga is one of the six philosophical schools of India and in this text is understood as a path, a life's philosophy supported by ethics, philosophical and technical principles. At recent decades, an increase in the number of practitioners have been observed and also the development of many Yoga teachers' courses. The recent condition of this new profession makes these teachers a group that needs to be studied. In this circumstance, the goal of this research was to investigate these professional's trajectory, as well as the life's implications of this professional path. To achieve this goal, a qualitative research was conducted in which semi-structured interviews were used to investigate the trajectory of twelve yoga's teachers of Campinas city. The interviews were transcribed and the data's analysis was done with the support of an analysis' trajectory model constructed through the systematic literature review. These speeches demonstrated that this professional choice leads to disruptions on several life's aspects. They also suggest that the basis of this career choice is beyond the financial return or professional stability, and stand as a way to satisfy ontological needs. Full textYoga for children is an interesting and rapidly spreading discipline. No academic literature or specific educational path for scholars and trainers that develops the methodological and didactic aspects of the yogic principles for children has been formulated yet. Such pioneer approach, in order to be effective, it must be supported by models with a solid theoretical base, a methodological-didactic system and a yogic practice. The present research aims to provide a model, grounding its conclusions on the assessment and evaluation of the "International Training in Educational Yoga" (ITEY). The term "Educational Yoga" (EY) represents a didactic method based on yogic practices, applied to children through playful activities, meditation, physical strengthening and cooperation group-activities that allow them to find time and space for the development of self-knowledge and awareness, mental stability and empathy by involving the body, mind and heart, through sensitivity and emotions. Intrinsically rooted to the ITEY approach, the present investigation provides the answer to the following questions: to. What should be the most appropriate theoretical references within the extensive realm of yoga, for the definition of a training path of EY for teachers and trainers? b. What should be the didactic-methodological system beneath it? c. Is such educational method able to transmit principles, contents, methodology and techniques to future teachers and trainers effectively? 1. The present inquiry has highlighted two fundamental manuscripts of traditional Yoga, namely the Bagavad Gita and the Yogasutra of Patanjali, considered to be the fundamental historical references for EY, since they capture the very basic principles and contents, to which contemporary Yoga grounds its roots in. With respect to the present yogic context, the Okido Yoga is considered to be the most suitable source for EY to rely on, since it combines the introspective attitude to the more social one, satisfying this way both the relational needs of children / teenagers as well as the more meditational inclination of the yogic tradition. It also stands out for its attention to the critical balance between the physical, the mental and the emotional condition of kids, which may be found also in the Yogasutra doctrine introduced by Patanjali. 2. The Action Research methodology consists in the analysis (through the “Release” software) of the 495 surveys on students, which at the end of each EY training have been asked to fill out specific questioners with regard to the benefits and impact that the EY practice have had on them, directly and indirectly. These first hand resources allowed us to demonstrate the ever-growing potential of the ITEY as an effective educational tool able to improve and develop the quality of trainers by providing a structural model for the application of the EY methodology. The literature analysis has shown that the enhancement of the students' background, together with the workshop-participatory activities, proposed by the ITEY through simulation laboratories, flipped classroom approach, cooperative learning, internships and teamwork between groups of peers, have successfully attracted the interest and the active participation of all students physically as well as mentally and emotionally, both as individuals and in groups. Such acknowledgment of the positive benefits and impact of the EY approach has significantly favored a deeper and more sound understanding of guiding principles, holistic techniques and above all the acquisition of an attitude of openness for a respectful approach towards children and teenagers. In conclusion in the field of educational research (Baldacci and Frabboni, 2013), the qualitative survey (Cardano, 2011) and the Action-Research method, (Losito-Pozzo, 2008), allowed EY to refine its methodological-didactic structure (Castagna, 2002) and to discover and progressively improve its applicability, keeping a strong connection with the traditional dimension of yoga (Patanjali, 2015) as well as with the contemporary experiences and studies in the field of educational sciences (Dionisi and Garuti, 2011). This research opens up new possibilities for investigation. First of all, it attests to the relevance of a significant correlation between academic research and training practice, even in an emerging field such as educational yoga. Secondly, it traces new avenues of investigation regarding the possible integration between holistic principles, yogic practices and professional development of teachers and trainers.

Full textThis research aims to describe the levels of Volitional Components in yoga practitioners. For this research we took 81 yoga practitioners and 80 non-practitioners, who shared the same socio-demographic characteristics. They were assessed using the Volitional Components Inventory (Kazén-Saad, 2004), adapted for a Peruvian sample (Argumedo and Romero, 2011). The results suggested an inverse relationship between yoga practice and two areas of the Volitional Components: Self-Regulation and General Stress. Furthermore, the results showed inverse correlations between these areas as well as the weekly frequency and the time of practice.

Introduction: The starting point of our research object is a historical study of the view of the body, corporeality and spirituality through the Yoga tradition a documentary research correlated with changes in body perceptions expressed by the students of a Yoga class in the city of João Pessoa, between 2012 and 2013. Objective: Analyze the changing perceptions and spiritual body through the practice of Yoga - the awakening of spirituality, expressed by students in a class of Yoga, under an extension project. Methods: The methodological approach of this study includes a qualitative approach called descriptive and exploratory research, with the development of research tools adapted to the reality under study towards the social context of the subjects. We can consider that the great relevance of this Master Thesis is in combining a research of bibliographical character with field research, through the method of quasi-experimental research design, under a university extension program. In this sense, we can characterize our work also as an action-research. Analysis and Results: Within the total sample of questionnaires applied, 18 student questionnaires with minimum frequency were selected 70% by the end of the course. The selected students completed the questionnaires at two times during the Yoga course: in the beginning of the classes in October 2012 and at the end, in December 2012, with only one break, of almost three months 26 classes. After conducting a t-test for repeated measurements, no significant difference was verified in the pre and post-test means as a function of the scale factors (p>0.05). This result suggests that there has been no regression or progress in spiritual well-being (Bem Estar Espiritual BEE) in any of the factors of those practicing Hatha-Yoga during the period of the extension program. Conclusions: Thus, we can verify that the statements composing this ethnographic research corroborate for one of the initial objectives of the research, which is precisely to analyze the relationship between the theory and the practice of Yoga with the changes in spiritual and body perception the awakening of spirituality expressed by the students of a Yoga class in a university extension program (PROBEX). However, we believe that the great merit of our research is not exactly in the statistical results obtained from the BEE questionnaire, but in the very use of this questionnaire in a pioneer way with no previous publications, in an academic research about Yoga in Brazil. given these findings, we can associate the sense of body-corporeality of the human being to the physical posture signs of Yoga, through body and cognitive capturing of the practice, ideas and concepts reflected in concrete reality, such as the posture before the world, the people, personal and spiritual experiences, combining with the personal, community, environmental and transcendental factors of the BEE analysis. Keywords: Yoga, Hatha-Yoga, body, spirituality.

Population ageing is regarded as a considerable phenomenon in the current century and it has contributed to countless studies concerning the elderly. Yoga, as an example has its roots in the Indian culture dating back 5.000 years ago and it has been widened its scope to several age groups, specially the elderly. The current study suggests yoga practicals for people who are sixty or older, focusing on a better quality of life and it also focuses on integrate these practicals with health programs in universities, city halls and in living centers. The principal aim of this study was to reveal and interpret the elderly perception about the effects they felt when they practiced yoga. After practicing Hatha Yoga and Yogatherapy for twenty months between 2008 and 2009 there were semi structured interviews with 27 elderly people, their age varying between 60 and 84 years old and an average of 69,5 years old. The current study is a qualitative research based on an action research methodology. Several effects of yoga were found out. At the physical level the elderly reported the balance of the organism and improvement in several systems: mainly digestive, respiratory, nervous and locomotor- pain relief, flexibility improvement, awakening of the body awareness, insomnia prevention, better state of health, lightness feeling and general well being; at the psycho-emotional level the elderly reported relaxing, improvement in the concentration and memory, peace feeling, serenity and tranquility and a better control of anxiety; at the socio-affective level the elderly reported social living and importance of the group; at the spiritual level it was pointed out the union between spiritual and physical, balance and harmony of mind, emotions and spirit. The effects above described were supported by the literature. Experimental studies indicate that Yogatherapy can help in the control and cure of many chronic diseases. It is recommended that this method should be used in health programs for elderly, as well as further research should be carried out focusing on yoga practicals for the elderly.

Full textBackground: Stress and stress-related mental illness is increasing in our society and it is important to find options to slow down the development. Stress is a normal physical condition but for a long time without recovery stress can lead to mental illness. Yoga studies have shown a stress-reducing effect on mood and yoga has become a popular option to reduce perceived stress symptoms. Therefore it can be interesting to study underlying mechanisms for perceived stress reduction. The hormone cortisol increases during stress. Perhaps yoga has a stress-reducing effect through decreasing the hormone. Aims: The aim of the study is to exam whether perceived stress reduction in yoga practice is related to lowered cortisol levels in healthy adults. Methods: A systematic literature study was carried out on articles published in 2009-2018. The articles were searched in PubMed and Web of Science. Results: Nine studies were reviewed (seven experimental and two observations studies). Six studies showed complete or partial reduction of cortisol levels. An experimental and two observation studies did not show significantly lower cortisol levels. Partially improved mood and cognitive ability were seen. Conclusions: Decreased cortisol levels in yoga practice were observed. However, there were studies that did not show decreased cortisol levels and the studies have shortcomings that lower the strength of evidence. Better studies are needed to establish a relationship.

Full textThe aim with the study was to examine if praciticing yoga could be helpful in stressful situations for students. The study is based on relevant literature and research, plus on quality survey of in- depth interviews with students who had practiced yoga for at least six months on a regulare basis. The interviews were intendes to find out if the students had found yoga to have any inpact on their ability to handle stress, and thus improve their ability to concentrate and to learn. To sum up, the result shows that the students thought that the practice of yoga had given them an instrument to handle stress, and thereby experienced a positive cinnection between yoga and schoolwork. Thus, the conclusion could be that yoga can be a simple and easy to access complement in special education in order to decrease the stress that negatively influences learning, concentration and motivation.
Ruiter, Catharina Angelique. "Kundalini Yoga in Berlin: Teaching Consumerism." Doctoral thesis, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.18452/22062.
Full textIn this thesis, I will take the Kundalini Yoga teacher community in Berlin as my case study in order to investigate the extent to which cultural hybridity is present in this yoga stream. I will discuss how the community in question incorporates Sikh elements in their classes, while also catering to their western audience by adapting Kundalini Yoga to fit the local context. Also, I will look at the role consumerism plays in shaping a community culture that consists of a mix of eastern and western elements. This thesis focusses on the question of how does Kundalini Yoga in Berlin (or rather its teachers) create a hybrid culture where yoga is appropriated to a practice that is acceptable in the dominant capitalist culture in Berlin (e.g. reducing yoga to a fitness and stress- reduction practice), while also inserting into that dominant culture new elements and meanings, contributing to the formation of a local Kundalini Yoga culture, propelled by the workings of consumerism? The objective of this research is to contribute to the body of research on (cultural) hybridization in the face of globalization. Furthermore, my work will contribute to the body of research on yoga and my work will re-conceptualize hybridization by looking at the role consumerism plays in the hybridization of local cultures.

Yoga is increasingly recommended for the K-12 population as a health intervention, a Physical Education activity, and for fun. What constitutes Yoga however, what is taught, and how it is taught, is variable. The purpose of this study was to survey Youth Yoga curriculums to identify content, teaching strategies, and assessments; dimensions of wellness addressed; whether national Health and Physical Education (HPE) standards were met; strategies to manage implementation fidelity; and shared constructs between Yoga and educational psychology. Methods: A descriptive qualitative design included a preliminary survey (n = 206) and interview (n = 1), questionnaires for curriculum developers (n = 9) and teachers (n = 5), interviews of developers and teachers (n = 3), lesson observations (n= 3), and a review of curriculum manuals. Results: Yoga content was adapted from elements associated with the Yoga Sutras but mostly from modern texts, interpretations, and personal experiences. Curriculums were not consistently mapped, nor elements defined. Non-Yoga content included games, music, and storytelling, which were used to teach Yoga postures and improve concentration, balance, and meta-cognitive skills. Yoga games were noncompetitive and similar to PE games. Teaching strategies included guided inquiry and dialoguing. Assessments were underutilized and misunderstood. Lessons were created to engage students across multiple dimensions of wellness; cultivate self awareness, attention, and concentration; and teach relaxation skills. Spiritual wellness was addressed using relaxation, self-awareness, partner work, and examining emotional states. Developers adapted curriculums to meet HPE standards when needed. Yoga was considered appropriate across all developmental stages and could be adapted to meet specific needs. Developers tended not to manage fidelity; strict control was perceived as contrary to Yoga philosophy. Curriculum manuals were resources, not scripts. Continuing education included workshops, videos, and online forums. Emerging themes included attention, awareness, meta-cognition, and self-regulation as learning objectives; dialoguing as a teaching strategy; and the influence of mindfulness and positive psychology on curriculum design. These suggest additional areas of research. Curriculums need codification, defining, and mapping of elements including the alignment of teaching strategies with assessments. The benefits of Yoga, beyond the physical postures, need further study.

Full textDespite recent interest for the benefits of yoga practice in the occidental scientific literature data on the effects of yoga respiration on psychophysical performances, namely respiratory sensation, and the cardiorespiratory response to exercise are totally absent in healthy humans and obviously in asthmatic patients. In healthy subjects and asthmatic patients we searched for the long-term effects of training period to “ujjai" yoga respiration (YRT), characterized by a very slow breathing pattern (2. 5 /min) with inspiratory and expiratory apnoeas, on their spontaneous ventilatory pattern and sensation of added inspiratory loads, comparing the changes in respiratory sensation in controls to their sensations to detect tactile and auditory stimuli. In other healthy subjects trained to sport endurance we studied the effects of “ujjai” or other yoga respirations (“bhastrika” and “uddiyana bandha”, also called “diaforce” because enhancing the participation of diaphragm in respiratory movements) on aerobic power and heart rate (HR) changes during and after constant-work-rate cycling exercise sustained at 70% of maximal HR. After a 2-month period of YRT in controls and only a 4-week YRT session in asthmatics, we measured a selective significant increase in respiratory sensation, the n exponent of the = k. n Stevens’s power law, which plots respiratory sensation versus mouth pressure. In healthy subjects, the mechanism of improved respiratory sensation may be the persistent slowing of their spontaneous breathing pattern (respiratory frequency decreased from 19. 6 + 2 to 13. 6 + 3 /min) whereas, in asthmatics, the significant reduction of airway resistance (3. 26 + 0. 31 to 2. 60 + 0. 32 cmH2O. L-1s ) could explain their enhanced respiratory sensation. After a 1-month YRT period in healthy subjects, we measured a significant 17% increase in exercise power and also a significant post-exercise HR decrease assessing of an improved recovery of heart rate function. In the same individuals trained to “diaforce” we also measured a significant attenuation of hypoxemia during YRT sessions and significant increase in maximal inspiratory pressure (PImax). During the same periods, no significant variations in ventilatory pattern, respiratory sensation, response to exercise and PImax were noted in control groups of subjects (healthy or asthmatics) untrained to yoga respiration. The present data show that YRT markedly improves both respiratory sensation and cardiorespiratory response to exercise. Yoga respiration training could be included in rehabilitation programs in patients suffering from chronic respiratory or cardiac diseases and could help sportsmen to improve their performances in place of the use of doping agents

Our dissertation main objective is to provide a critical view about the practice of mantras in the context of Purna Yoga (or Full Yoga), launching under the Sciences of Religions an ethnographical look over one of the main spiritual heritage of India, which continue to be part important Sadhana of several lines and branches of Yoga, thus seeking to understand these sounds, effects and their meanings. To have a general understanding of the Mantras we will discuss in the first chapter some of these sacred phonemes that are considered important for the tradition of Yoga. The mantras selected were: The OM mantra, the Gayatri Mantra, Mantra Hare Krishna (The Vaishnava Maha-Mantra). These are considered universal mantras that are practiced in various traditions, including the specific tradition on which we had observed the Purna Yoga or Full Yoga of Sri Aurobindo. In the second chapter we deepen concepts of Full Yoga and present elements of field research, through our travel experience by the ashrams of India, which experienced important practices of Yoga mantras linked to this. In the third chapter we present the results of interviews with leading masters and teachers of Full Yoga in different parts of India as well as Brazilian masters and instructors. In addition we also present a description of all the spiritual atmosphere of the visited ashrans through a participatory research in which the researcher, maintaining an academic look, experience the field through its praxis. We strive through our field research to observe exactly how these mantras are being practiced today in the context of full Yoga.
