Abstract The nature of the Tsinghua bamboo-slip manuscript Chi jiu zhi ji Tang zhi wu is different from that of the Yi Yin shuo, which is recorded in the ‘Zhuzi lüe’ of the Han shu ‘Yiwen zhi’. This manuscript is also not a story fabricated by people in the Warring States period. It is possible that what is presented in this manuscript was a legend passed from generation to generation within Yi Yin’s lineage. Unlike Yin zhi and Yin gao, this manuscript does not belong to the Shangshu category.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTThe method of divining by yarrow stalk in accordance with the scheme of 64 hexagrams did exist in the Yin Dynasty. Numerical strings of three and six lines on oracle bones recently unearthed provide the new evidence for the above statement and many scholars have discussed it. My paper contributes the following new points:(1) Comparing the 64 hexagram names in the Ma-wang-tui manuscript with those appearing in the so called Kuei-tsang () recorded by later scholars, we find some similarity on both sides. This indicates that the Kuei-tsang is not a legendary matter.(2) Some Hsin-tien period wares found in Kansu also show the numerical marks such as . This also suggests that such trigram images had been used by still earlier people.(3) The graph for nine “” was found on one oracle bone from Ch'i-chia . It shows that the Western Chou people had advanced the way of divining and thus the emphasis on Yin of the Yin people had been developed into the emphasis on Yang .(4) I try to interpret, with reference to the sentences of Chou-yi, the divining hexagrams which appear on the bamboo strips found in T'ien-hsing-kuan , Chiang-ling . As the symbol of was still employed by the Ch'u people, it seems that they were following the way of the Yin people in the emphasis on Yin.

Abstract:
An exemplary figure of Chinese tradition, Yi Yin assisted Prince Tang in the establishment of the Shang Dynasty around 1600 BCE. Except for a few ancient rulers, he is the only historical figure in China to appear both in the oracle inscriptions of the mid-13th century BCE and in the philosophical and literary texts of the Warring States period (5th-3rd centuries BCE) transmitted to the present day. In addition to this, we will take into account a collection of manuscripts discovered about fifteen years ago. These texts, in which Yi Yin is the protagonist, were written on bamboo slips in the ancient state of Chu, around the 4th century BCE. Their completely new content brings fresh insights into the development process of the legend of Yi Yin. This study aims to provide an overview - as comprehensive as possible at the current stage - of this legend. To this end, we will first outline the context wherein the bamboo manuscripts in Chu script were discovered, and the method used to reconstruct and read them. We will then review all the written evidence related to Yi Yin dating from the pre-imperial period, i.e. the epigraphic and transmitted sources on the one hand, and the bamboo manuscripts which will be edited, translated, and annotated, on the other. Finally, we will examine the main roles attributed to Yi Yin in the manuscripts, which depict him as the pillar of dynastic change, the prince's instructor, but also the hero of a fable. Following an intertextual approach, we will highlight the diversity of the legend, which was variably adapted, for political, moral and spiritual, or even literary purposes. Our study will thus give an opportunity to observe and question Yi Yin's varied representations through the ages

Abstract:

Lee, Yi-Chen. "Trends in demographic, health behaviour factors, and self-perceived weight status : influences on obesity in Australia from 1995 to 2005." Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 2009. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/29883/1/Yi-Chen_Lee_Thesis.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Overweight and obesity are two of the most important emerging public health issues in our time and regarded by the World Health Organisation [WHO] (1998) as a worldwide epidemic. The prevalence of obesity in the USA is the highest in the world, and Australian obesity rates fall into second place. Currently, about 60% of Australian adults are overweight (BMI „d 25kg/m2). The socio-demographic factors associated with overweight and/or obesity have been well demonstrated, but many of the existing studies only examined these relationships at one point of time, and did not examine whether significant relationships changed over time. Furthermore, only limited previous research has examined the issue of the relationship between perception of weight status and actual weight status, as well as factors that may impact on people¡¦s perception of their body weight status. Aims: The aims of the proposed research are to analyse the discrepancy between perceptions of weight status and actual weight status in Australian adults; to examine if there are trends in perceptions of weight status in adults between 1995 to 2004/5; and to propose a range of health promotion strategies and furth er research that may be useful in managing physical activity, healthy diet, and weight reduction. Hypotheses: Four alternate hypotheses are examined by the research: (1) there are associations between independent variables (e.g. socio -demographic factors, physical activity and dietary habits) and overweight and/or obesity; (2) there are associations between the same independent variables and the perception of overweight; (3) there are associations between the same independent variables and the discrepancy between weight status and perception of weight status; and (4) there are trends in overweight and/or obesity, perception of overweight, and the discrepancy in Australian adults from 1995 to 2004/5. Conceptual Framework and Methods: A conceptual framework is developed that shows the associations identified among socio -demographic factors, physical activity and dietary habits with actual weight status, as well as examining perception of weight status. The three latest National Health Survey data bases (1995 , 2001 and 2004/5) were used as the primary data sources. A total of 74,114 Australian adults aged 20 years and over were recruited from these databases. Descriptive statistics, bivariate analyses (One -Way ANOVA tests, unpaired t-tests and Pearson chi-square tests), and multinomial logistic regression modelling were used to analyse the data. Findings: This research reveals that gender, main language spoken at home, occupation status, household structure, private health insurance status, and exercise are related to the discrepancy between actual weight status and perception of weight status, but only gender and exercise are related to the discrepancy across the three time point s. The current research provides more knowledge about perception of weight status independently. Factors which affect perception of overweight are gender, age, language spoken at home, private health insurance status, and diet ary habits. The study also finds that many factors that impact overweight and/or obesity also have an effect on perception of overweight, such as age, language spoken at home, household structure, and exercise. However, some factors (i.e. private health insurance status and milk consumption) only impact on perception of overweight. Furthermore, factors that are rel ated to people’s overweight are not totally related to people’s underestimation of their body weight status in the study results. Thus, there are unknown factors which can affect people’s underestimation of their body weight status. Conclusions: Health promotion and education activities should provide education about population health education and promotion and education for particular at risk sub -groups. Further research should take the form of a longitudinal study design ed to examine the causal relationship between overweight and/or obesity and underestimation of body weight status, it should also place more attention on the relationships between overweight and/or obesity and dietary habits, with a more comprehensive representation of SES. Moreover, further research that deals with identification of characteristics about perception of weight status, in particular the underestimation of body weight status should be undertaken.

Su, Yi-chuan. "Theoretical and experimental characterisation of energy in an electrostatic discharge." Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 2013. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/63476/1/Yi-chuan_Su_Thesis.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Electrostatic discharges have been identified as the most likely cause in a number of incidents of fire and explosion with unexplained ignitions. The lack of data and suitable models for this ignition mechanism creates a void in the analysis to quantify the importance of static electricity as a credible ignition mechanism. Quantifiable hazard analysis of the risk of ignition by static discharge cannot, therefore, be entirely carried out with our current understanding of this phenomenon. The study of electrostatics has been ongoing for a long time. However, it was not until the wide spread use of electronics that research was developed for the protection of electronics from electrostatic discharges. Current experimental models for electrostatic discharge developed for intrinsic safety with electronics are inadequate for ignition analysis and typically are not supported by theoretical analysis. A preliminary simulation and experiment with low voltage was designed to investigate the characteristics of energy dissipation and provided a basis for a high voltage investigation. It was seen that for a low voltage the discharge energy represents about 10% of the initial capacitive energy available and that the energy dissipation was within 10 ns of the initial discharge. The potential difference is greatest at the initial break down when the largest amount of the energy is dissipated. The discharge pathway is then established and minimal energy is dissipated as energy dissipation becomes greatly influenced by other components and stray resistance in the discharge circuit. From the initial low voltage simulation work, the importance of the energy dissipation and the characteristic of the discharge were determined. After the preliminary low voltage work was completed, a high voltage discharge experiment was designed and fabricated. Voltage and current measurement were recorded on the discharge circuit allowing the discharge characteristic to be recorded and energy dissipation in the discharge circuit calculated. Discharge energy calculations show consistency with the low voltage work relating to discharge energy with about 30-40% of the total initial capacitive energy being discharged in the resulting high voltage arc. After the system was characterised and operation validated, high voltage ignition energy measurements were conducted on a solution of n-Pentane evaporating in a 250 cm3 chamber. A series of ignition experiments were conducted to determine the minimum ignition energy of n-Pentane. The data from the ignition work was analysed with standard statistical regression methods for tests that return binary (yes/no) data and found to be in agreement with recent publications. The research demonstrates that energy dissipation is heavily dependent on the circuit configuration and most especially by the discharge circuit's capacitance and resistance. The analysis established a discharge profile for the discharges studied and validates the application of this methodology for further research into different materials and atmospheres; by systematically looking at discharge profiles of test materials with various parameters (e.g., capacitance, inductance, and resistance). Systematic experiments looking at the discharge characteristics of the spark will also help understand the way energy is dissipated in an electrostatic discharge enabling a better understanding of the ignition characteristics of materials in terms of energy and the dissipation of that energy in an electrostatic discharge.

Abstract:
Abstract In opening a book, we place ourselves at a gateway. In Chinese, an introduction to any subject is usually called “entering the gate,” or “entering the door” Uu-men). The gate leads symbolically to wisdom and sageliness. The two parent trigrams, Ch’ien and K’una, with their undivided yang and divided yin lines, usually represent the mysteries that are beyond the door. For Chou Tun-yi (Zhou Dunyi, ror 7-73), the mysteries are with him in his own room, with the opening and closing of the door. Chou Tun-yi sees the door as sometimes closed and sometimes open. Favoring the natural, he does not insist that wisdom is to be found with the opening of the door but claims that it is there in the opening and closing. Here, of course, one may add that “opening and closing” can also serve as a metaphor for breathing and, by extension, to being at one with the universe.

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter surveys the development of new ideas about nature, the universe, and the human body in ancient China, focusing on the period between the fifth century bce and the second century ce. It focuses in particular on cosmogony (the study of the origins of the universe) and cosmology, astrology and the calendar, and medicine, as well as developments in mathematics, music, and geography. It charts the development of correlative cosmology, focusing on the notion of qi as the fundamental stuff of the cosmos, and how it went through processes based on cycles of yin and yang. It surveys the contributions of leading figures such as Zi Wei, Shi Shen, and Chunyu Yi.

Abstract:
Originally, City is an enormous and intricate system. However, Cerdá simplified the complicated system into a basic unit, the Manzana, which is the unique code belonging to Barcelona found by Cerdá and based on his analysis to the history of the city, life of its citizens, and some other cases. Being at the core of Barcelona Eixample plan, it gradually formulates the enormous city system of Barcelona and thus paves the way for its future development. Starting with the rules of Invariability, Simplicity and Changeability, the three principles in Yi, this thesis regards the Manzana as a Yin-Yang body, with Yin and Yang power complementing and coexisting with each other. By restoring the codes hidden behind the 550 Manzanas in Barcelona, the thesis tries to explore the common ground between the physical space of the city and the binary life of the people living in it.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Since Mo Yan received the Nobel prize and also because he said many times that he considers Pu Songling his teacher, and he on more than one occasion reiterated that he was heavily influenced by Liao Zhai zhi yi, literary connections between Mo Yan and Pu Songling have been discussed by many literary scholars and critics. However, when it comes to contemporary literati, the scope of writers influenced by Liao Zhai zhi yi and those who revere this masterpiece is in no way limited by Mo Yan only. In such dimensions as literary style, approach to subject selection, character depiction and others, Liao Zhai zhi yi in one way or another exerted an influence over other writers. This paper deals with the influence exerted by Liao Zhai zhi yi on the linguistic consciousness, moral concepts and character depiction in contemporary Chinese literature, using Sun Li, Wang Zengqi and Gao Xiaosheng as examples. The clear and polished writing of Liao Zhai zhi yi, being exquisitely melodic throughout, the praise it gives to the persons who put morals and friendship before material possessions and are unwilling to forgo them even faced with the choice between life and death as well as the depiction of female characters — all of this served as an example and an inspiration for Sun Li, Wang Zengqi and Gao Xiaosheng.

Abstract:
The Medieval China is a “Manuscript era”. The four divisions of Jing, Shi, Zi, Ji, and the documents of Buddhism and Taoism, all have to be considered based on this general background. For the first part of this paper, the keyword used in the comparison with “Buddhism” in the Medieval China is “Confucianism” rather than “Confucian classics”. Then, the concept and classification of Jiyi (collection of the lost parts of classics) are explained. The second part, starting from the newly published Lunyu Yi shu in Japan in 2020 and integrating with Jiang Zhou yi shulunjia yi ji and other manuscripts, is to analyze some Buddhist factors in the study of Confucianism Yi shu. The third part, from the East Asian Civilization sphere, explores the academic significance of Chinese Buddhism under the perspective of the integration of the Three teachings in the Middle Ages. Special attention will be paid to the Japanese written Guketsu getensho, and how the text form absorbed the Confucian thought will be analyzed. Through these cases, a preliminary conclusion about the relationship between the manuscript culture of Confucianism and Buddhism in the medieval China will be made.

Abstract:
The first information in Russia about the Yi-jing (易經, Canon of Changes) was published by the first Russian sinologist, German historian and philologist-polyglot G. S. Bayer in the two-volume Museum Sinicum (St. Petersburg, 1730) in Latin. In Russian, the primary information about Yi-jing became available to the reader half a century later thanks to the coryphaeus of Russian sinology of the 18th century A. L. Leontiev. In 1782, he published an illustrated and commented translation of a fragment from Yi-jing (named Convenient Base) as an appendix to his translation of the Manchu text of the Statutes of the Great Qing (大清會典, Dai-Qing hui-dian). A. L. Leontiev called the French abbot, who visited St. Petersburg in 1769, the initiator of his appeal to the Yi-jing, but did not indicate his name. P. E. Skachkov after V. S. Kolokolov decided that he was the famous French Jesuit missionary and versatile scientist A. Gaubil. However, he died ten years earlier. Most likely the interlocutor of A. L. Leontiev was a well-known theologian and economist-physiocrat, French abbot N. Baudeau, who held confidential negotiations with Catherine II in 1769 in St. Petersburg about the situation in Poland. The secrecy of this mission on the eve of the first partition of Poland fully explains the concealment of his name in 1782, when he was still alive and brewing the second partition. Apparently, a look at the Yi-jing of the French enlighteners and physiocrats, reported by N. Baudeau to A. L. Leontiev, prompted him to link the ancient canon with Statutes of the Great Qing.

Abstract:
Böylece Müdafaa-i Hukuk Cemiyeti’nin Adana Heyet-i Merkeziyesi Kayseri’de faaliyete başlamıştı.

Abstract:
Date: June 13, 2019 Presenter: Yong-Yi Wang, Center for Reliable Energy Systems Project Team Leader: Michael Cook, ExxonMobil Program Manager: Thomas Marlow, PRCI Dr. Yong-Yi Wang, founder and president of Center for Reliable Energy Systems (CRES) presents his research results related to a PRCI project for assessing buried pipelines after a ground movement event. The research conducted by Dr. Wang set out to improve pipeline design to better accommodate significant localized ground movement such as that caused by landslides, earthquakes, or subsidence/settlement. When such a ground movement event occurs along the right-of-way (ROW) of a buried pipeline, it is imperative that the pipeline operator determine whether the ground movement is a threat to pipeline integrity in order to protect those responding to the event, those living near the affected ROW, and the environment. This webinar will discuss the research findings and provide guidance to pipeline operators responding to a ground movement event. Expected Benefits/Learning Outcomes from attending this webinar: - Understanding factors that must be considered in response to a confirmed ground movement event, - Being able to make critical decisions immediately after an event, such as continued service at full pressure, pressure reduction, or shutdown, and - Ability to make use of the structured response plans with systematic considerations of an operator's objectives, tolerance to risks, site-specific soil and pipeline conditions, and availability of information with known time constraints. Who Should Attend? - Pipeline design engineers - Pipeline integrity engineers, managers, specialists - Operations personnel Recommended pre-reading: PR-350-164501-R01 Guidance for Assessing Buried Pipelines After a Ground Movement Event Access to the Webinar is provided after registering via the related link.

Dudley, Lynn M., Uri Shani, and Moshe Shenker. Modeling Plant Response to Deficit Irrigation with Saline Water: Separating the Effects of Water and Salt Stress in the Root Uptake Function. United States Department of Agriculture, March 2003. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2003.7586468.bard.

Full text
Abstract:
Standard salinity management theory, derived from blending thermodynamic and semi- empirical considerations leads to an erroneous perception regarding compensative interaction among salinity stress factors. The current approach treats matric and osmotic components of soil water potential separately and then combines their effects to compute overall response. With deficit water a severe yield decrease is expected under high salinity, yet little or no reduction is predicted for excess irrigation, irrespective of salinity level. Similarly, considerations of competition between chloride and nitrate ions have lead to compensation hypothesis and to application of excess nitrate under saline conditions. The premise of compensative interaction of growth factors behind present practices (that an increase in water application alleviates salinity stress) may result in collateral environmental damage. Over-irrigation resulting in salinization and elevated ground water threatens productivity on a global scale. Other repercussions include excessive application of nitrate to compensate for salinity, unwillingness to practice deficit irrigation with saline water, and under-utilization of marginal water. The objectives for the project were as follows: 1) To develop a database for model parameterization and validation by studying yield and transpiration response to water availability, excessive salinity and salt composition. 2) To modify the root sink terms of an existing mechanism-based model(s) of water flow, transpiration, crop yield, salt transport, and salt chemistry. 3) To develop conceptual and quantitative models of ion uptake that considers the soil solution concentration and composition. 4) To develop a conceptual and quantitative models of effects of NaCl and boron accumulation on yield and transpiration. 5) To add a user interface to the water flow, transpiration, crop yield, salt transport, chemistry model to make it easy for others to use. We conducted experiments in field plots and lysimeters to study biomass production and transpiration of com (Zeamays cv. Jubilee), melon (Cucumismelo subsp. melo cv. Galia), tomato (Lycopersiconesculentum Mill. cv. 5656), onion (Alliumcepa L. cv. HA 944), and date palms (Phoenix Dactylifera L. cv. Medjool) under salinity combined with water or with nitrate (growth promoters) or with boron (growth inhibitor). All factors ranged from levels not limiting to plant function to severe inhibition. For cases of combined salinity with water stress, or excess boron, we observed neither additive nor compensative effects on plant yield and transpiration. In fact, yield and transpiration at each combination of the various factors were primarily controlled by one of them, the most limiting factor to plant activity. We proposed a crop production model of the form Yr = min{gi(xi), where Yr = Yi ym-1 is relative yield,Ym is the maximum yield obtained in each experiment, Xi is an environmental factor, gi is a piecewise-linear response function, Yi is yield of a particular treatment. We selected a piecewise-linear approach because it highlights the irrigation level where the response to one factor ceases and a second factor begins. The production functions generate response "envelopes" containing possible yields with diagonal lines represent response to Xi alone and the lines parallel to the X-axis represent response to salinity alone. A multiplicative model was also derived approximating the limiting behaviour for incorporation in a hydrochemical model. The multiplicative model was selected because the response function was required to be continuous. The hydrochemical model was a better predictor of field-measured water content and salt profiles than models based on an additive and compensative model of crop response to salinity and water stress.

Abstract:
The phenotypic analysis of new candidate varieties at multiple locations could provide information on the stability of their genotypes. We evaluated the stability of 11 maize hybrid candidates in five districts in East Java Province, Indonesia. Maize hybrids with high yield potential and early maturity traits derived from a diallel cross were planted in a randomized complete block design with two checks (Srikandi Kuning and BISI-2) as a single factor with four replicates. The observed traits were grain yield per hectare and harvest age. The effects of environment, genotype, and genotype × environment interaction on yield were highly significant (P < 0.01). KTM-1, KTM-2, KTM-4, KTM-5, and KTM-6 showed higher average grain yield per hectare than the checks (Srikandi Kuning = 8.49 ton ha−1 and BISI-2 = 7.32 ton ha−1) at five different locations. The average harvest age of 11 candidates was less than 100 days. KTM-4 and KTM-5 had production yields that were higher than the average yield of all genotypes in all environments (Yi > 7.78 tons ha−1) and were considered stable on the basis of three stability parameters, i.e., Finlay–Wilkinson, Eberhart–Russell, and additive main effect multiplicative interaction (AMMI). KTM-2 had the highest yield among all tested genotypes (9.33 ton ha−1) and was considered as stable on the basis of AMMI but not on the basis of Finlay–Wilkinson and Eberhart–Russell. KTM-1 performed well only in Pamekasan, whereas KTM-6 performed well only in Sampang. Thus, these two genotypes could be targeted for these specific locations.
