Abstract:
Abstract Before the Mongol conquest in 1279, numerous envoys were sent from the Southern Song court to its neighboring states. Their purpose was to evaluate and tame foreign territories and alien peoples and thereby reduce their threat to Song culture, and the travelogues resulting from these journeys were often “utilitarian” in style. The Record of the Perfected Master Changchun's Journey to the West (Changchun zhenren xiyou ji 長春真人西遊記), however, deserves special attention for its nuanced handling of a complex cultural-political power dynamics. Its compiler, Li Zhichang, was a leader in the Quanzhen sect, and his travelogue documents the journey of his master, Qiu Chuji, at the invitation of Chinggis (Genghis) Khan. Li's text illustrates the tension of competing political and cultural authorities: while the Mongols were becoming the source of political authority, the Taoists still owned the discursive power. The author argues that Li deliberately adopted a narrative strategy that conceded the Mongol claim to political legitimacy while simultaneously asserting Taoism's cultural dominance over the Mongols. The article also juxtaposes Li's work with the travel record by Yelü Chucai, a Khitan adviser to the Mongols who traveled with Chinggis Khan during his western military expeditions. Although Yelü's travelogue is often read as a rebuttal to Li Zhichang's work, a closer look reveals how Yelü appropriated Li's strategy for his own agenda: to justify Mongols' invasion of Central Asia while highlighting the cultural values shared between the Mongols and the Han Chinese. Both works employ rhetorical strategies that laid the foundation for political discourse affirming the Mongol-Yuan dynastic legitimacy.

Abstract:
The extant variants of the now-lost treatise Činggis-un yisün örlüg-tei önöčin köbegün-ü čečelegsen šastir are attested in the 17th-18th century Mongolian historical chronicles Altan Tobči / The Golden Chronicle (1655) by Lubsangdanjin and the Bolor Erike / “Crystal Rosary” / (1774-1775) by Rasipungsug. This article addresses the history of transmission, translations, and studies of this text, and demonstrates that the Činggis-un yisün örlüg-tei öničin köbegün-ü čečelegsen šastir is not merely an account of Chinggis Khan’s discussion with his nine high officials about the benefits and evils of alcohol, but contains deeper hidden meanings. Specifically, this paper offers the following four findings: First, based on comparison with Mongolian historical sources, this paper clarifies the origins of Chinggis Khan’s nine high officials, how they befriended Chinggis Khan, their merits and accomplishments, and their deaths. Based on these sources, we have determined that the events described in the Činggis-un yisün örlüg-tei öničin köbegün-ü čečelegsen šastir date to 1206-1207. Second, this paper discusses the hidden meaning that Bo’orchu, Muqali, Boqorul, Jebe, who wish to abstain from alcohol and diligently perform their duties, befriended Chinggis Khan in their childhood without seeking any benefit, were fully trustworthy officials, whereas Sorqan-Shira, Jelme, Yelü Chucai, Qara Kiru and Shigi-Qutuqu - who, in their own words, wish to drink alcohol and revel - befriended Chinggis Khan later out of self-benefit, and were untrustworthy officials. Third, the paper discusses the symbolism of the order of the speakers’ words on alcohol as it relates to the ranks of Chinggis Khan’s officials, as well as Mongolian cultural symbolism relating to directions. Fourth, based on the debate in the text between the orphan boy, wise nobleman Chindagha, and Chinggis Khan, this paper discusses the fact that one reason Chinggis Khan’s state was powerful is that he listened to average people and he was able to reflect their ideas in national affairs. Fifth, this paper demonstrates that the text retains important features of deep hidden meaning and poetic verse characteristic of 13th century Mongolian literature.

Abstract:
The heritage of Abai as the basis for the formation of an intellectual personality is studied in this article, so the heritage of the thinker and the scientific conclusions are taken as a basis. If we study the works of Abai, we will meet with the basic principles of folk pedagogy that contributes to the gradual absorption of qualities in the spirit of heroism, patriotism, the struggle for honour, dignity and morality. The main idea of Abai’s works is the basic qualities of a person: the formation of «full-fledged person» is revealed comprehensively through the relationships to each other, the relationship between volitional qualities, willpower, mind and courage. The activities carried out in the education system related to the implementation of the idea of «Kazakh yeli – mangilik yel» are the main direction in the education system as well as they are the issues of establishing a link between the past and present of our history.

In this report, I describe a query-driven system which helps in deciding which restaurant to invest in or which area is good to open a new restaurant in a specific place. Analysis is performed on already existing businesses in every state. This is based on certain factors such as the average star rating, the total number of reviews associated with a specific restaurant, the price range of the restaurant etc. The results will give an idea of successful restaurants in a city, which helps you decide where to invest and what are the things to be kept in mind while starting a new business. The main scope of the project is to concentrate on Analytics and Data Visualization.

Askay, David Andrew. "Crowd control| Organizing the crowd at Yelp." Thesis, The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3594049.

Abstract:

This dissertation investigates how businesses are able to align the collective actions of a disconnected crowd with the strategic goals of the organization. I examined this questions within the context of the business review website Yelp through a quantitative analysis of nearly 60,000 business reviews, 17 in-depth qualitative interviews with reviewers, and a two-year ethnography. Interpreting the results of this data within the framework of the collective action space (Bimber, Flanagin, & Stohl, 2012) indicates that Yelp is able to manage the contributions of a relatively small subset of reviewers through the Yelp Elite Squad. Rather than simply motivating more reviews, the Elite Squad encouraged reviewers to interact more personally with other reviewers and accept increased institutional engagement with Yelp. In encouraging members of the crowd to produce online reviews within this context, Yelp was able to use organizational culture as a control strategy for encouraging Elite reviewers to adopt a pre-mediated reviewing approach to their reviews. This increased the frequency of moderate reviews and decreased the frequency of extreme reviews. This behavior ultimately furthers the organizational goals of Yelp, as moderate reviews are considered to be more helpful for reviews of businesses. Finally, implications for crowdsourcing, big data analysis, and theory are discussed.

Online review platforms have become an essential element of the business industry, providing users in-depth information on businesses and other users' experiences. The purpose of this study is to examine possible bias or discriminatory behaviors in users' rating habits in the Yelp dataset. The Surprise recommender system is utilized to produce expected ratings for the test set, training the model with 75% of the original dataset to learn the rating trends. Then, the ordinary least squares (OLS) linear regression is applied to identify which factors affected the percent change and which categories or locations show more bias than the others. This paper can provide insights into ways that bias can manifest within a dataset due to non-experimental factors such as social psychology; future research into this topic can therefore take these non-experimental factors, such as the discriminatory bias found in Yelp reviews, into consideration in order to reduce bias when utilizing machine learning algorithms.

Dobson, Filippa Jane. "Barren (yeld ) : (traces of ain) landscape, postcolonialism and identity." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2017. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/20604/.

Full text
Abstract:
Yeld is a Scottish/North of England word meaning barren. The practice-based research contradicts binary notions of fertile/unfertile, nature/culture and inside/outside, arguing for a more nuanced entanglement of the human with the non-human animal and the other-than-human environment. The thesis details the productive ‘naturecultural’ relationship between the author and the Badger Stone, a Neolithic cup and ring marked statutory monument on Ilkley Moor. The three key aims of my practice-based research relate to geographical boundaries, the structuring of identity and cultural resistance to issues of power and control. The research tests postcolonial theory as a strategy for reading landscape and investigating geographical boundaries and relates postcolonial theory to phenomenological and other theories about the structuring of identity in relation to performance and place. My research to date has signified a change in emphasis from a definition of postcolonialism as necessarily boundaried and territorial to a potentially new understanding of postcolonialism as signifying a political tactic of resistance to issues of power and control. The primary themes of walking, collecting, mapping and printmaking were the catalyst into performance and land art. Four key performances on the Moor investigated considerations of place in relation to what I term ‘heritage control’ as a strategy for land management and access to scheduled monuments. By intertwining different theoretical ideas and actions, print forms became natural/cultural objects situated somewhere between physical artefacts and ephemeral performance. It is the combination of performance with principles of mapping that form the potentially original contribution to knowledge that this thesis attempts to outline.

Abstract:
Manifestations of citizen journalism on Twitter have been mainly analyzed around trending stories, associated with public campaigns or breaking news. Microbloggers' everyday attempts to contribute to professional media coverage, however, have been scarcely addressed in the literature. This research analyzes the practice of tweeting at influential news outlets by using a mixed-method approach. Content analysis anddirected queries about users' own motivation to tweet at media explore the interactionbetween regular users and professional news networks. Results show that there is apredisposition towards negative media commentary followed closely by newsworthy topics generated by the users, which replicate to a large extent mainstream media's agenda. When asked directly in the feed 'why do you tweet at media?', users explain their motivations to address news outlets in diverging ways, from explicit citizen journalism mission, to visibility claims and coincidental tagging. The study contributesto the study of citizen journalism on social media platforms and elaborates a mixed-method approach suited for this type of online data.

Wright, Mary Elisabeth. "Pragmatic Quotation Use in Online Yelp Reviews and its Connection to Author Sentiment." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2016. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/6210.

Full text
Abstract:
Previous research has established that punctuation can be used to communicate nuances of meaning in online writing (McAndrew & De Jonge, 2011). Punctuation, considered a computer mediated communication (CMC) cue, expresses tone and emotion and disambiguates an author's intention (Vandergriff, 2013). Quotation marks as CMC cues can serve pragmatic functions and have been understudied. Some of these functions have been generally described (Predelli, 2003). However, no corpus study has specifically focused on the pragmatic uses of quotations in online text. Consumer reviews, a genre of online text, can directly impact business profits and influence customers' purchasing decisions (Floyd, Freling, Alhoqail, Cho & Freling, 2014). Businesses are investing in sentiment analysis to gauge their target market's opinions (Salehan & Kim, 2016). Sentiment analysis is the computerized appraisal of a text to determine whether its author is expressing a positive or negative opinion (Novak, Smailovic, Sluban & Mozetic, 2015). Sentiment analysis programs are still limited and could be improved in accuracy. Most programs rely on lexicons of words given a pre-determined polarity value (positive or negative) out of context (Novak et al., 2015). However, context is crucial to communication, and sentiment analysis programs could incorporate a better variety of contextual linguistic features to improve their accuracy. Quotations used for pragmatic communication is such a feature. This study discovered seven pragmatic quotation uses in a 2014 Yelp review corpus: Collective Knowledge, Non-standard, Grammatical, Non-literal, Narrative, Idiolect, and Emphasis. An ANOVA and Tukey HSD test were performed, and the results were significant. Pragmatic category accounted for 15% of the variance in review star rating. The Collective Knowledge category and the Narrative and Non-literal categories were significantly different from each other. The Collective Knowledge category showed a correlation with positive sentiment, while the Narrative and Non-literal categories displayed a correlation with negative sentiment. These three categories are likely present in several types of online text, making them valuable for further sentiment analysis research. If these pragmatic patterns could be detected automatically, they could be used in sentiment algorithms to give a more accurate picture of author opinion.

Abstract:
Knowledge Graph (KG) related recommendation method is advanced in dealing with cold start problems and sparse data. Knowledge Graph Convolutional Network (KGCN) is an end-to-end framework that has been proved to have the ability to capture latent item-entity features by mining their associated attributes on the KG. In KGCN, aggregator plays a key role for extracting information from the high-order structure. In this work, we proposed Knowledge Graph Processor (KGP) for pre-processing data and building corresponding knowledge graphs. A knowledge graph for the Yelp Open dataset was constructed with KGP.
