Abstract:
Abstract Do students believe that Year 12 LOTE courses contribute to the development of oral and aural proficiency in the target language? Attitudinal and performance data collected from university French 1 students shed some light on students’ satisfaction with their Year 12 LOTE course and on the relationship among perceived outcomes, course components, language of instruction and language performance. The findings, while not definitive, provide some insights for secondary and tertiary LOTE teachers, together with some baseline data for further research into the success of school language programs.

Abstract:
Melorheostosis (of Leriand Joanny) is a rare, non-genetic sclerotic dysplatic bone disorder presenting at any age, usually from late childhood to adulthood. Its aetiology is unknown. It affects mainly the long bones of the upper and lower limbs, but also the short bones of the hand and foot and, rarely, the axial skeleton. Onset is usually insidious, with pain, deformity of the extremity, limb stiffness and limitation of joint motion, as well as thickening and fibrosis of the overlying skin and muscle atrophy being the common clinical features found on presentation. In adults the characteristic radiographic appearance consists of irregular hyperostotic changes of the cortex, generally on one side of the bone, resembling melted wax dripping down one side of a candle, from which melorheostosis derives its name. This, however, is not a feature of the radiographic appearance in children, where the external cortical margin retains its regular outline. Children more often present with a discrepancy in limb size rather than with pain (as is seen in adults). We present our case of melorheostosis in a 12-year-old child to highlight the main clinical and radiological differences found between children and adults.

Abstract:
The time is ripe to consider what 21st-century digital citizens should know about artificial intelligence (AI). Efforts are under way in the USA, China, and many other countries to promote AI education in kindergarten through high school (K–12). The past year has seen the release of new curricula and online resources for the K–12 audience, and new professional development opportunities for K–12 teachers to learn the basics of AI. This column surveys the current state of K–12 AI education and introduces the work of the AI4K12 Initiative, which is developing national guidelines for AI education in the USA. A Note to the Reader This is the inaugural column on AI education. It aims to inform the AAAI community of current and future developments in AI education. We hope that the reader finds the columns to be informative and that they stimulate debate. It is our fond hope that this and subsequent columns inspire the reader to get involved in the broad field of AI education, by volunteering their expertise in their local school district, by providing level-headed input when discussing AI with family and friends or by lending their considerable expertise to various decision makers. We welcome your feedback, whether in the form of a response to an article or a suggestion for a future article. – Michael Wollowski, AI in Education Column Editor

Abstract:
INTRODUCTION Frenuloplasty is commonly performed. Its outcome has never been reported. PATIENTS AND METHODS We have performed 213 frenuloplasties since 1992. Patients were sent a questionnaire regarding indication, treatment advised on presentation, anaesthetic, outcome (linear analogue satisfaction score), and further intervention required. RESULTS Overall, 48 of 209 (23%) patients replied (median age of series, 27 years; range 16–78 years: and of respondents, 27 years; range, 17–78 years). Indications included tearing/bleeding of the foreskin (n = 32), balanitis (n = 3), pain on intercourse (n = 26), phimosis (n = 4), ejaculatory (n = 1) and hygiene (n = 1) problems. Twenty-five patients received general anaesthesia. Median satisfaction score was 8 (range, 1–10). Thirty-four patients would recommend frenuloplasty to another with similar symptoms. Three of nine patients initially advised to undergo circumcision later underwent circumcision (frenuloplasty satisfaction score, 1–3), 1 awaits circumcision (score, 5), 1 has a tight foreskin (score, 3), and 4 are satisfied (scores 6,9,10,10). In total, 23 of 209 patients (11%; median age, 27 years) underwent circumcision following frenuloplasty. Median time to circumcision was 11 months (range, 5–52 months). CONCLUSIONS This is the only reported series of frenuloplasty. The response rate reflects a young mobile population. Most men are satisfied with the outcome, including some initially advised to undergo circumcision. The overall rate of circumcision following frenuloplasty is likely to be 15–20%.

Abstract:
Background: Chronic cough is a common complaint in children which causes distress and affects the quality of life of parents and children. While cough may be seen as a common condition of childhood without serious consequences, ignoring a cough that may be the sole presenting symptom of an underlying illness can lead to delayed diagnosis and progression to a chronic respiratory morbidity. Aims and objectives of the study was to evaluate the specific diagnosis and prognosis of chronic cough in children aged 2 to 12 years. Methods: A prospective study was done in 100 children with chronic cough (history of cough >4 weeks) at Narayana Hospital, Nellore. Routine investigations like complete blood count with differential count, Mantoux test, sputum examination, and X ray chest and other investigations like bronchoscopy, HIV, CT scan chest and paranasal sinuses, barium swallow, endoscopy and biopsy whenever needed. Pearson Chi square test carried out to quantify significance difference, p value <0.05, considered significant. Results: The mean duration of chronic cough was 56.27 days (1-5 months). Most of the children belonged to <6 years age with higher boys’ prevalence. Breathlessness and fever noticed in 79% cases; it was found mostly in pneumonia cases as compared to other diagnosis (p=0.001). Sputum production noticed in 4, which found to be bronchiectasis. 1 case noticed with regurgitation, which is gastro oesphageal reflux disease. History of triggers for the symptoms of cough, wheeze and breathlessness is found to have a significant correlation with asthma (p=0.000). Asthma in 14% of cases, of which 12 were mild persistent and 2 were moderate persistent. Tuberculosis was diagnosed in 14% cases, Pneumonia in 12% cases, and Bronchiectasis in 12 cases. Undernourished children noticed in 56%, maximum number in tuberculosis group. Asthma was associated with pneumonia, mucous plug obstruction and collapse lung. Recurrent pneumonia was associated with airway anomaly, gastro esophageal reflux disease. Conclusions: It should be remembered that a prolonged cough can be indicative of a more serious underlying condition, and always warrants thorough investigation.
