Flight test instrumentation/data processing environments consist of three components: * Airborne Data Acquisition System * Telemetry Control Room * Post Test Data Processing System While these three components require the same setup information, most often they are configured separately using a different tool for each system. Vendor supplied tools generally do not interact very well with hardware other than their own. This results in the multiple entry of the configuration information. Multiple entries of data for large complex systems are susceptible to data entry errors as well as version synchronization issues. This paper describes the successful implementation of a single Microsoft Excel based tool being used to program the instrumentation data acquisition hardware, the real-time telemetry system, and the post test data processing system on an active test program. This tool leverages the XML interfaces provided by vendors of telemetry equipment.

Abstract:
XML was recommended by W3C in 1998 as a markup language to be used by device- and system-independent methods of representing information. XML is nowadays used as a data model for storing and querying large volumes of data in database systems. In spite of significant research and systems development, many performance problems are raised by processing very large amounts of XML data. Materialized views have long been used in databases to speed up queries. Materialized views can be seen as precomputed query results that can be re-used to evaluate (part of) another query, and have been a topic of intensive research, in particular in the context of relational data warehousing. This thesis investigates the applicability of materialized views techniques to optimize the performance of Web data management tools, in particular in distributed settings, considering XML data and queries. We make three contributions. We first consider the problem of choosing the best views to materialize within a given space budget in order to improve the performance of a query workload. Our work is the first to address the view selection problem for a rich subset of XQuery. The challenges we face stem from the expressive power and features of both the query and view languages and from the size of the search space of candidate views to materialize. While the general problem has prohibitive complexity, we propose and study a heuristic algorithm and demonstrate its superior performance compared to the state of the art.Second, we consider the management of large XML corpora in peer-to-peer networks, based on distributed hash tables (or DHTs, in short). We consider a platform leveraging distributed materialized XML views, defined by arbitrary XML queries, filled in with data published anywhere in the network, and exploited to efficiently answer queries issued by any network peer. This thesis has contributed important scalability oriented optimizations, as well as a comprehensive set of experiments deployed in a country-wide WAN. These experiments outgrow by orders of magnitude similar competitor systems in terms of data volumes and data dissemination throughput. Thus, they are the most advanced in understanding the performance behavior of DHT-based XML content management in real settings. Finally, we present a novel approach for scalable content-based publish/subscribe (pub/sub, in short) in the presence of constraints on the available computational resources of data publishers. We achieve scalability by off-loading subscriptions from the publisher, and leveraging view-based query rewriting to feed these subscriptions from the data accumulated in others. Our main contribution is a novel algorithm for organizing subscriptions in a multi-level dissemination network in order to serve large numbers of subscriptions, respect capacity constraints, and minimize latency. The efficiency and effectiveness of our algorithm are confirmed through extensive experiments and a large deployment in a WAN.

Abstract:

As software increases in complexity and relies more on Internet and Web technology, the challenge of enabling interaction and communication between loosely coupled applications becomes increasingly vital. Distributed computing presents challenges to loosely coupled applications that require means with which to interact and communicate. There exist technologies that are aimed at solving these problems; Web service is one such technology. Web service is a relatively new and rapidly maturing technology in the area of distributed computing; it offers a standards-based way to exchange information in an interoperable manner. This thesis is done in partnership with StruSoft and attempts to provide a solution to their problem of distributed computing, by using Web service technology. The paper looks at distributed systems and various solutions to the problems associated with distributed computing. A comprehensive insight into Web service technology is provided, along with rationale as to why it is chosen for the project. In addition, there are guidelines as to how the necessary components of Web service are installed. Development of License Management Software is also a part of this thesis. The software offers a means with which to store and maintain data about customers and their licenses. Security is a major focus of this paper and thus extensively mentioned throughout. A detailedexplanation of computer security is presented, along with the necessary configurations that are needed to make the Web service and the License Management Software more secure.

Abstract:
The proliferation of PALs (Public Access Locations) is fuelling the development of new standards, protocols, services, and applications for WLANs (Wireless Local Area Networks). PALs are set up at public locations to meet continually changing, multiservice, multi-protocol user requirements. This research investigates the essential infrastructural requirements that will enable further proliferation of PALs, and consequently facilitate ubiquitous computing. Based on these requirements, an extensible architectural framework for PAL management systems that inherently facilitates the provisioning of multiple services and multiple protocols on PALs is derived. The ensuing framework, which is called Xobogel, is based on the microkernel architectural pattern, and the IPDR (Internet Protocol Data Record) specification. Xobogel takes into consideration and supports the implementation of diverse business models for PALs, in respect of distinct environmental factors. It also facilitates next-generation network service usage accounting through a simple, flexible, and extensible XML based usage record. The framework is subsequently validated for service element extensibility and simplicity through the design, implementation, and experimental deployment of SEHS (Small Extensible Hotspot System), a system based on the framework. The robustness and scalability of the framework is observed to be sufficient for SMME deployment, withstanding the stress testing experiments performed on SEHS. The range of service element and charging modules implemented confirm an acceptable level of flexibility and extensibility within the framework.

Nair, Nirmal-Kumar. "Incorporating voltage security into the planning, operation and monitoring of restructured electric energy markets." Texas A&M University, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/3199.

Abstract:
As open access market principles are applied to power systems, significant changes are happening in their planning, operation and control. In the emerging marketplace, systems are operating under higher loading conditions as markets focus greater attention to operating costs than stability and security margins. Since operating stability is a basic requirement for any power system, there is need for newer tools to ensure stability and security margins being strictly enforced in the competitive marketplace. This dissertation investigates issues associated with incorporating voltage security into the unbundled operating environment of electricity markets. It includes addressing voltage security in the monitoring, operational and planning horizons of restructured power system. This dissertation presents a new decomposition procedure to estimate voltage security usage by transactions. The procedure follows physical law and uses an index that can be monitored knowing the state of the system. The expression derived is based on composite market coordination models that have both PoolCo and OpCo transactions, in a shared stressed transmission grid. Our procedure is able to equitably distinguish the impacts of individual transactions on voltage stability, at load buses, in a simple and fast manner. This dissertation formulates a new voltage stability constrained optimal power flow (VSCOPF) using a simple voltage security index. In modern planning, composite power system reliability analysis that encompasses both adequacy and security issues is being developed. We have illustrated the applicability of our VSCOPF into composite reliability analysis. This dissertation also delves into the various applications of voltage security index. Increasingly, FACT devices are being used in restructured markets to mitigate a variety of operational problems. Their control effects on voltage security would be demonstrated using our VSCOPF procedure. Further, this dissertation investigates the application of steady state voltage stability index to detect potential dynamic voltage collapse. Finally, this dissertation examines developments in representation, standardization, communication and exchange of power system data. Power system data is the key input to all analytical engines for system operation, monitoring and control. Data exchange and dissemination could impact voltage security evaluation and therefore needs to be critically examined.

Abstract:
In a web application, “webform” plays an important role in providing interactions between users and a server. To develop a webform in conventional method, developers have to create many files including HTML-JavaScript, SQL script, and many server-side programs to process to data. In this thesis, we propose a new language, Webform Language (WFL). WFL can considerably decrease developing time of webform by describing it in XML and a parser will automatically generate all necessary files. In addition, we give an option for user to describe a webform in another language, called Simple Webform Language (SWFL). The syntax of a SWFL is simple and similar to the “CREATE TABLE” statement in SQL. When a parser parse webform description in SWFL, it translated the description to WFL first, and then processed it by as normal WFL.

Abstract:
The growth of network and distributed technologies in flight test instrumentation (FTI) has provided the benefits of flexibility, scalability, and compatibility with prevalent computing capabilities. However, to achieve these capabilities, the complexity of each piece of FTI and the overall system has increased dramatically. Even with systems composed of equipment from a single vendor, it is important to have management systems that provide the flexibility to adapt quickly to various system configurations and present unified information to the flight test users. The growth of network technologies and then standardized approaches such as iNET standards becoming accepted IRIG 106 standards is leading to the growth of multi-vendor systems. These multi-vendor systems further increase the need for rapidly reconfigurable management systems. This paper describes a constraints engine we have developed to enable flexible system management systems and reflects on how these techniques have been used successfully in the iNET System Manager.

Abstract:
Prostate and breast cancer are the most common cause of cancers in men and women, respectively. Medical imaging plays an important role in breast and prostate cancer detection and evaluation. Then to prove that our web-based medical application could be applied in different medical disciplines, the main part of this thesis is the implementation of two frameworks as a Java applet interface designed as a web-based tool in the domains of mammography from X-rays in radiology, and of prostate imaging from an Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). This aims to facilitate the diagnosis of new mammographic and prostate cases by providing a set of image processing tools that allow a better visualization of the images, and a set of drawing tools used to annotate the suspicious regions (overlays). Each annotation allows including the attributes considered by the experts when issuing the final diagnosis. The overall set of overlays is stored in a database as eXtensible Markup Language (XML) files associated with the original images. Finally, an exhaustive evaluation of the results is also discussed in this thesis. For the application on mammography, the experimental study is performed in order to evaluate the scalability, complexity and response speed at the proposed tool. For the application on MRI of prostate cancer, the evaluation focused on the decrease of the variability of the expert assessments when collaborative work is performed. To conclude, a new architecture with the main goal of managing patient databases with potentially multi-modal imaging is presented such as for an MRI of the prostate cancer and evaluation from potentially several experts.

Abstract:

Creating a generic, multi-vendor data exchange system for transmitting telemetry configurations between various systems is a daunting task. To date many different systems have been proposed including relational databases (RDBMS), TMATS, and several different XML schemas. Although many of these systems have been implemented, a complete, flexible solution has not been developed. This paper describes an implementation that is currently in use for exporting and importing a complete telemetry system via XML. Using this system, an engineer can import an entire telemetry configuration, a partial telemetry configuration, or even just a single measurement (parameter). As a result, the gap between user database systems and the airborne instrumentation vendor’s configuration software (IVCS) is seamlessly bridged. This provides many benefits including: the ability to rapidly change configurations, data entry error avoidance, version control, the protection of sensitive information, and configuration reusability. This system allows for the configuration of all aspects of the telemetry setup including data acquisition hardware, transmitters, ground stations, and recorders. In addition, the recorder settings and the definition of the data that are to be recorded are coupled and linked to the rest of the telemetry configuration, which facilitates future data recovery.

Ju, Tesera L. "The Design of an Interoperable and Adaptable Workflow Management System Using XML." NSUWorks, 2000. http://nsuworks.nova.edu/gscis_etd/620.

Full text
Abstract:
Daily business and office operations, which take place within the context of processes, are carried out by staff. These processes form a workflow. A supervisor assigns and coordinates the work, and monitors the workflow to ensure productivity and service quality. These activities are characterized as workflow management. As workflow grows in volume and complexity, so does workflow management. A workflow management system (WFMS) is a proactive management information system that assists the workers to do jobs more efficiently by obtaining information or invoking application programs for them, and supports the managers in monitoring job execution, collecting performance statistics and balancing the workload among workers. As such, a WFMS is a metasystem that oversees and interacts with an existing manual or computer assisted business process. Therefore, a WFMS requires adaptability to work with all kinds of business processes. Different workflows may be governed by different WFMSs. When a workflow needs to interact with another workflow, the involved WFMSs must work together by exchanging information or performing some monitoring functions for its counterpart. This means a WFMS must cope with invocation across (potentially) all platforms and network environments and transfer application or workflow relevant data in a common format. This also means WFMSs require interoperability. The Workflow Management Coalition (WFMC) has published a Workflow Reference Model along with relevant standards and specifications to facilitate the development of interoperable WFMS. The advent of World Wide Web (WWW) and Extensible Markup Language (XML) also offered a great opportunity of expanding WFMS interoperability and enhancing WFMS adaptability. In fact, a recent WFMC standard on Interoperability WF-XML Binding has taken full advantage of this potential. In this dissertation the author presents a two-tier approach based on these technologies to the design of an interoperable and adaptable WFMS. The resulting WFMS is document-centric, transaction-based and event-driven. During the design, the author of this study first observed two typical transaction-based business scenarios and developed a generic business process model. This generic business process model was then represented with a set of Document Type Definitions (DTDs) in XML. Any instantiation of the DTDs is an adaptation to a particular business process. The application programming interfaces were represented in XML considering the WWW environment. The software components of the WFMS were specified in terms of functionality and capability to process XML documents. Metainformation about external applications and databases were also represented in XML. Finally, the WFMS was evaluated in terms of design, adaptability and interoperability. Because of the interoperability and adaptability, the author found that the design concepts in this study are not only applicable to the administrative type of workflow, but also to other types such as production-line workflow, collaborative workflow and ad-hoc workflow.

Abstract:
Continuous progress in multimedia research in recent years have led to proliferation of their applications in everyday life. The ever-growing demand in high performance multimedia applications creates the need for new and efficient storage and retrieval techniques. There exist numerous studies in the literature attempting to describe the content of these multimedia documents. Moving Picture Experts Group&rsquo
s XML based MPEG-7 is one of these studies that makes it possible to describe multimedia content in terms of both low and high level properties. MPEG-7 DDL allows defining new types using already defined types. Within the past ten years, it became a widely accepted standard in multimedia applications. In this thesis, an XML database application is developed to manage MPEG-7 descriptions, utilizing eXist XML DB as the database management system and a JAVA application as the frontend. MPEG-7 Description Schemes are extended by introducing fuzzy semantic types, such as FuzzyObject and FuzzyEvent, using the MPEG-7 DDL. From this point of view, the application of fuzzy XML methods in MPEG-7 standard is a novel approach.

The development of network-based data acquisition systems has resulted in a new architecture for supporting flight instrumentation that has the potential to revolutionize the way we test our aircraft. However, the inherent capability and flexibility in a networked test architecture can only be realized by the flight engineer if a sufficiently powerful toolset is available that can configure and manage the system. This paper introduces the concept of an instrumentation configuration and management system (ICMS) that acts as the central resource for configuring, controlling, and monitoring the instrumentation network. Typically, the ICMS supports a graphical user interface into the workings of the instrumentation network, providing the user with a friendly and efficient way to verify the operation of the system. Statistics being gathered at different peripherals within the network would be collected by this tool and formatted for interpretation by the user. Any error conditions or out-of-bounds situations would be detected by the ICMS and signaled to the user. Changes made to the operation of any of the peripherals in the network (if permitted) would be managed by the ICMS to ensure consistency of the system. Furthermore, the ICMS could guarantee that the appropriate procedures were being followed and that the operator had the required privileges needed to make any changes. This paper describes the high-level design of a modular and multi-platform ICMS and its use within the measurement-centric aircraft instrumentation network architecture under development by the Network Products Division at Teletronics.

Abstract:
A video data model that allows efficient and effective representation and querying of spatio-temporal properties of objects has been previously developed. The data model is focused on the semantic content of video streams. Objects, events, activities performed by objects are the main interests of the model. The model supports fuzzy spatial queries including querying spatial relationships between objects and querying the trajectories of objects. In this thesis, this work is used as a basis for the development of an XML-based video database system. This system is aimed to be compliant with the MPEG-7 Multimedia Description Schemes in order to obey a universal standard. The system is implemented using a native XML database management system. Query entrance facilities are enhanced via integrating an NLP interface.

Abstract:
Today, advancements in the information technologies increased the significance of electronic business in the world. Besides the numerous advantages provided by these advancements, competition has also increased for the enterprises. In this competitive environment, companies have to access information faster and response to the changes quickly. In a supply chain, it is a highly possible that one of the partners may defect in providing its services. When these exceptional cases occur, the pending parties have to establish transitory collaborations to replace the missing partner promptly in order not to suffer this deficiency economically. Companies need to know the competences and capabilities of their prospective business partners before establishing partnerships. Furthermore, the reputations of the candidate partners have to be known to avoid possible regrettable partnerships. In this thesis, we have developed a trust and reputation model that can be used over supply chains to determine and exploit the reputation of providers in transitory collaboration formation. The trust model takes the behaviors of providers, consumers into account and combines multiple criteria to aggregate a single reputation value. Experimental results show that, our model provides a robust and reliable reputation mechanism addressing a number of issues that have not been covered in the related studies. In addition to this, an implementation of the model is realized within a Web application and the functionalities have been exposed as Web Services. The interoperability of the Web Services have been ensured through standard GS1 XML documents, which are utilized and extended in scope of the thesis. Furthermore, client interaction is provided through Web based user interfaces and REST services.

XML is one of the data exchange formats on the internet. Providing efficient access to XML documents, XML database management systems have become more and more important. XML database management systems (XDBMSs) can help users to access and manage XML documents. In XDBMSs, the concurrency control module is one of the most important factors to improve systems efficiency. The concurrency control module allows concurrent execution of transactions. Although many concurrency control protocols for XDBMSs were proposed, no protocols consider the access behaviors of ID/IDREF and XLink. XPath, ID/IDREF and XLink can be used to query and filter XML documents. XPath is a path query language based on XML tree structures. In general, the access behaviors provided by the XPath language begin from the root node to the leaf nodes. On the other hand, ID/IDREF and XLink can link nodes in the XML document itself or in other XML documents. Therefore, the access behaviors of ID/IDREF and XLink may generate direct acyclic graphs (DAG) or cyclic graphs, which may cause traditional concurrency control protocols fail. In addition, dead locks may frequently occur owing to the access behaviors which form cyclic graphs. The thesis proposes a new lock-based concurrency control protocol, which considers the access behaviors of XPath, ID/IDREF and XLink in the XPath model. This new protocol locks on the index structures of XML documents. Locking model and lock compatibility matrix are proposed as well. In addition, a simulator is developed for the experimental purpose to evaluate the performance of our protocol.

Böhme, Timo, and Erhard Rahm. "Benchmarking XML Database Systems: First Experiences." 2001. https://ul.qucosa.de/id/qucosa%3A32160.

Full text
Abstract:
We recently developed and published a scaleable multi-user benchmark called XMach-1 (XML Data Management benchmark) for evaluating the performance of XML data management systems [1]. To our knowledge it is the first such benchmark. It aims at realistically evaluating the performance of individual systems as well as to allow for a performance comparison between different systems and architectures ranging from native XML data management systems to XML-enabled relational DBMS. Specifying and implementing the benchmark revealed a number of problems which are partly due to the lack of a standardized XML query language, the complexity of the XML format and the relative immaturity of current XML database software. After a brief review of XMach-1 we will discuss our experiences made so far.

The Health Departmen of Executive Yuan prescribed that the hospitals should be classified and set up a referral system in order to balance the medical treatment resource between city and country, raise the quality of medical treatment, complete the service system of medical treatment, protect people’s benefit in medical treatment and apply the cost of the resource of medical medical treatment efficiently. At the present there are three systems of the referral,non-referral system,a referral system un-conformed to the HL7-XML,a referral conformed to the HL7-XML. It is not conformed to HL7-XML in the most referral system, moreover, they design the system only for specific treatment institute,it couldn’t support all of the hospitals, and unify the intcrior information system of the hospitals. This study provides a new method of information management for medical referral. This method shall offer the referral system to support all the hospital to referral the medical history completely such as,referring-out,referring-in,reply, trace…etc. Furthermore, every step of his method shall solve the problem and defect of the present system. We use this method to support completely and efficiently the referral of medical history for all hospital, which is able to get the medical information promptly, enjoy it commonly, and raise the quality of medical service and efficient management without costing medical resource.
