Full textDuring the 10th and 11th centuries, the Vallès region was the hinterland of the County of Barcelona: it was under the control of its sovereigns, but far enough from the capital to develop autonomous dynamics. A large quantity of original medieval documentation from this territory has been preserved in the rich archives of its ecclesiastic and civilian institutions. As a result, it is the ideal place to identify certain people, the scribes - those who authenticated documents with their signature in order to make them public. The present study is divided into three sections. The first focusses on the description of documentary sources and the methodology used to obtain and process the information. In the second, the scribes are identified, presenting an inventory and study of each of them, as well as a prosopography of about forty of them. The third section focusses on the topography linked to these scribes, showing the information sources and tools used for the analysis, as well as cartographic results and files of the topographic units that allow us to sense how the scribes were connected with the territory. Evidence shows that during the 10th and 11th centuries the great majority of the scribes were secular clerics, and the ecclesiastic career of some of them can be followed through the sources. During the 10th century, regular clergy are practically absent, while they appear signing a small proportion of documents in the 11th century. Inversely, during the 10th century there is a significant contingent of secular scribes, which reduced considerably during the 11th century. It can be concluded that the scribes authenticated the documents in performative acts, not merely assertive ones, by virtue of a public authority that distinguished the professions and made incompatible that of the judge and that of the scribe. Documentary homogeneity, long careers, a wide presence over the territory and, above all, the ability to change vocabulary in a short time span, are signs that there was a stable link between the public authority and the scribes long before the reception of the Jus commune and the introduction of the notary institution. During the course of the fourth decade of the 11th century there was a rapid change in the vocabulary used to designate holy places and adjacent spaces, a new form generated in a Carolingian theological context. It was probably the result of the executed plan of the count authority, promoted specifically by Ermessenda of Carcassone, and accompanied by the judge Bonshom and the bishops Pere Roger of Girona and Oliba of Vic, who consecrated their respective cathedrals in 1038. In Barcelona, a change of vocabulary can be found too, in this case at Santa Maria del Mar. There, on the occasion of the renovation of the Canonical cathedral (between 1009 and 1019), a direct intervention of the counts can be attested. A few years later, during the rebellion of the lords of the March in the middle of the 11th century, the scribes continued acting under the rule of a public authority. Their function was used to consolidate the new social and economic connections, based on the private use of violence, which was exploited too through written documents.

Full textThe subject of this work is to study and compute the elasticity of the type R=A+XI[X] domains where I is an ideal of an integral domain A. In a first chapter, we compute the elasticity of R is finite if and only if the ideal I is a product of distinct primes ideals which one all principal but at most one. On the other hand, we compute the elasticity of R according to the GCD decomposition of I. We finish by showing that the elasticity of R can't be realised by a factorisation (except if R is HFD). In the second chapter, we investigate the elasticity of R when A is a Dedekind domain. First, we prove that its elasticity is finite if and only if the elasticity of A is finite and I is a radical ideal. Then we bound the elasticity of R using the number of prime ideal in the factorisation of I and some Davenport-type constants. In some special cases we derive the exact value of the elasticity. In the last chapter, we investigate the elasticity of domains of the type R=A+XI(1) ++XI(k)[X]. We obtain some necessary conditions for the elasticity to be finite when A is integrally closed and some sufficient conditions when A is ACCP. We finish by proving that when A is a UFD or a Dedekind domain, the elasticity of R is finite if and only if the elasticity of T= A+XI(k) [X] est finie et les quotients [I(k)/I(i)] sont finis

Full textThis thesis deals with the arithmetical commentary by Abbo of Fleury on the series of multiplication tables ascribed to Victorius of Aquitaine (fl. 450): the Explanatio in Calculo Victorii. My research aims to shed light on the history of medieval Neopythagoreanism between the 10th and 11th centuries, in which Abbo’s work stands as a peculiar testimony of what my work indicates as “theological arithmetism”. The organization of my thesis follows this overall structure. In the first two chapters Abbo’s life and works are presented with a special emphasis on his educational training and learning. Then, the main topics of his “mathematism” are presented, starting with Abbo’s interpretation of the Biblical passage on God who created everything in number, wheight and measure (Wisd. 11, 21), which is discussed at chapter 3, also by illustrating its philosophical background. Then, I present Abbo’s “henology”, namely his consideration of Unity, with regard to both divine and created unity (chapter 4); moving next to his conception of ontological and material compositeness, which Abbo ascribed to creatures (chapter 5) and finally to his arithmetical and computistical knowledge grounded on Boethius’ number theory and his methods of reckoning (chapter 6). To this overall exposition of Abbo’s Neopythagoreanism, it follows a section devoted to Peripatetic approach to the analysis of the natural phenomena (chapter 7). The methodology applied to my research intends to place Abbo’s thought in its cultural context: the renewal of the liberal studies and particularly of the quadrivium, which was stimulated by a progressive rediscovery of Boethius’ De arithmetica together with the introduction of new calculation tools in the Latin West. If this is the general background from which Abbo’s peculiar “Pythagorism” emerges, the philological analysis of his commentary confirms how Fleury was an outstanding centre for high-level mathematical studies. The manuscript tradition of both Abbo’s Explanatio and Victorius’ Calculus, let us envisage two possible paths through which the latter reached Fleury Abbey. A final goal of my work is also to consider Abbo’s commentary within the history of theoretical arithmetics during the first Millennium. Tracking Abbo’s philosophical sources and showing his distinctive comprehension and harmonization of different Platonic accounts, namely those spelt out in Mamertus’ De statu animae, Calcidius’ Commentary on Timaeus, Macrobius’ Commentary on the Dream of Scipio and Saturnalia and Boethius’ De arithmetica and De institutione musica, has been a stimulating research and a confirmation of Abbo’s outstanding role in the not yet sufficiently explored history of high medieval “mathematical” approach to theology and world vision

The basic aim of this thesis is to identify, to publish and to analyse 1,268 documents of the ancient archives of Sant Benet de Bages, a benedictine abbey founded in the middle of 10th century in the right side of the Llobregat river (in central Catalonia) by Sala of Conflent, an outstanding member of the nobility of the Pyrenees, a narrow collaborator of the counts of Barcelona-Osona-Manresa in the task of conquest and repopulation of the west mark in contact with Al-Andalus. The period studied covers 225 years, going from the year 898 (date of the first document of property that had the monastery, founded more than sixty years later) to the year 1123, when it recovered again its independence, after temporary union with Saint-Pons-de-Thomières (ca. 1075-1101), according to the program of the Gregorian Reform. Along those documents, we are able to know not only the long process of formation of the monastery and the details of its endowment, but also who were their abbots, how many monks lived there and the building of their patrimony.
