Spargo, Mark, and n/a. "Individual differences in imagery ability and its effects on reducing warm-up decrement of the Volleyball serve." University of Canberra. Sports Studies, 1998. http://erl.canberra.edu.au./public/adt-AUC20061109.081216.

Abstract:
The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effectiveness of using imagery in eliminating post-rest warm-up decrement (WUD) in the volleyball serve, and to assess whether individual differences in imagery ability mediated any possible reductions in WUD. Thirty-nine State level volleyball players were placed into one of 3 groups, High Imagery, Control, and Low Imagery, based on their scores on the Vividness of Movement Imagery Questionnaire (VMIQ). Players served 15 balls at a designated target area, rested for 10 minutes, and then attempted 5 more serves. During the last 2 minutes of the rest period, the players in the High and Low Imagery groups engaged in imagery of successful serving every 10 seconds, for a total of 12 repetitions. The Control group continued to read a magazine article. To ensure adherence to the imagery instructions, players were evaluated at completion of testing. Results revealed the High Imagery group was significantly better on serving performance post-rest, however there was no significant differences when comparing the mean of the last 3 pre-rest trials with the first post-rest trial. The interaction approached significance (p_= .091) and suggested that the High Imagery group may have benefited from the use of imagery. These findings have implications for the Nacson and Schmidt's (1971) activity-set hypothesis that states that an appropriate task will reduce WUD. It may need to include the effect individual differences, such as imagery ability, may have on the performance of that task.

Abstract:
By adopting the Policy for Global Development (PGD) in 2003 the Swedish parliament established gender mainstreaming as a goal in development cooperation policy, thereby emphasizing women’s role as agents of empowerment in development. This has not always been the case. During most of the history of Swedish foreign aid women issues have been handled separately and development policy mainly based on a male perspective. A lot of research has focused on trends in the global debate over how to better integrate women in development process, but much less academic attention has focused on how Swedish development policy has addressed the issue and how women have been referred to in development policy since the origin of Swedish foreign aid. According to the theories of critical discourse analysis (CDA) our written and spoken language influence our view of the reality and how we understand society. Following that logic, how women are referred to in Swedish development policy influence how women are perceived by the actors of development cooperation. Through a critical discourse analysis of official Swedish governmental documents concerning foreign aid, such as government bills and letters of appropriation, this study aims to detect discourses of Swedish development policy regarding women in developing countries. Furthermore it aims to understand how these discourses have related to the global debate about women’s role in development. This study observes six discourses of women in developing countries in the material: Women as passive recipient, agent of empowerment, the savior, motherhood-women as mothers, the other woman, and the man as the norm. The analysis shows Sweden’s development policies following the global discussions fairly coherently during much of the period, with 80s as the only possible exception.

Abstract:
Sofia Hedberg: "Wut is Wut?" C-uppsats 15 hp. 2013. This essay examines how a group of male, homosexual or bisexual African-American rappers from New York City are challenging the norms of hypermasculinity and heteronormativity within the musical genre of hip-hop. The study investigates both visual and textual expressions from Mykki Blanco, Le1f and Zebra Katz, and does so through the artists' videos and lyrics. The artistic expressions are continually compared to those of more traditional rappers, in order to illuminate both similarities and differencies. To provide a wider understanding of such terms as masculinity, gender identity and sexuality, a number of theoretical perspectives were taken into account. Queer theory provides the key theoretical perspective, but R.W. Connell's theory about masculinity and Yvonne Hirdman's on the 'gender contract' were also important to the study. The essay's result shows that the rappers use different tools to communicate their identities and sexualities, mainly the body, choice of language and by playing with stereotypical gender identities and roles. Although several similarities were found amongst the three rappers, the study showed that they all use the given tools in separate ways, and the fact that they are homosexual or bisexual does not, and should not, place them under any sort of homogeneous category.

Roussel, Magali. Thesis, Nancy 1, 2008. http://www.theses.fr/2008NAN10090/document.

Full text
Abstract:
Pedunculate oak is a species that shows a large intraspecific variability of water-use efficiency (WUE). The genetic determinism of WUE in this species has been demonstrated. WUE is a complex trait which is defined at a leaf level as the ratio of net CO2 assimilation rate (A) on stomatal conductance for water vapor (gs). This ratio – estimated with carbon isotope composition of organic matter (?13C) – is therefore influenced by numerous physiological or anatomical traits that influence A (chlorophyll content, thickness of leaf tissue) or gs (stomatal density…). The comparison of genotypes belonging to a same full-sib family of pedunculate oak, in non-limiting conditions, for these foliar traits has shown that the variability of WUE in this family was linked to the variability of gs instead of photosynthetic capacity. To go further, a study has been done on the possibility to use the variations of the isotope composition of oxygen (16O/18O) of leaf water and leaf organic matter to decompose the differences in water-use efficiency in its photosynthetic and transpiratory components. The results of this study has shown that the 18O signature coulb be used as a proxy for gs for pedunculate oak, but only in controlled conditions, and after amelioration of organic matter extraction procedures

Hawkins, Paul Martin. "DURHAM : a word sense disambiguation system." Thesis, Durham University, 1999. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/4493/.

Full text
Abstract:
Ever since the 1950's when Machine Translation first began to be developed, word sense disambiguation (WSD) has been considered a problem to developers. In more recent times, all NLP tasks which are sensitive to lexical semantics potentially benefit from WSD although to what extent is largely unknown. The thesis presents a novel approach to the task of WSD on a large scale. In particular a novel knowledge source is presented named contextual information. This knowledge source adopts a sub-symbolic training mechanism to learn information from the context of a sentence which is able to aid disambiguation. The system also takes advantage of frequency information and these two knowledge sources are combined. The system is trained and tested on SEMCOR. A novel disambiguation algorithm is also developed. The algorithm must tackle the problem of a large possible number of sense combinations in a sentence. The algorithm presented aims to make an appropriate choice between accuracy and efficiency. This is performed by directing the search at a word level. The performance achieved on SEMCOR is reported and an analysis of the various components of the system is performed. The results achieved on this test data are pleasing, but are difficult to compare with most of the other work carried out in the field. For this reason the system took part in the SENSEVAL evaluation which provided an excellent opportunity to extensively compare WSD systems. SENSEVAL is a small scale WSD evaluation using the HECTOR lexicon. Despite this, few adaptations to the system were required. The performance of the system on the SENSEVAL task are reported and have also been presented in [Hawkins, 2000].

Engle, Jeffrey Jamison. "Marketing the Iraq War: Manifest Content Analysis of US Executive Framing." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/22032.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the manifest content of the U.S. Executive framing effort intended to persuade the U.S. Congress, United Nations Security Council, and the American people that there was no greater threat to US national security than the continuing reign of Saddam Hussein\'s regime in Iraq. Through analysis of individual and group contributions to the three dominant themes created by the executive leadership, namely, the link between the regime of Saddam Hussein and terrorism, the pursuit of weapons of mass destruction, and the status of the regime and Saddam Hussein as an outlaw, I illuminate the process used to gain support for the unprecedented policy of preemptive war. The results of my analysis differ with previous literature on the subject which primarily considers the Bush administration\'s effort to be a campaign of lies, intended to lead the American people and the international community to believe a threat existed that the Bush Administration knew was not credible. In contrast to that conclusion, my analysis of the framing effort indicates that the marketing campaign for the Iraq War capitalized on world events, timing, the credibility of the particular speaker and their office and the amplifying effect of the media, making a campaign of lies unnecessary and the process they used replicable. Therefore, this analysis may justify heightened scrutiny for comparable policies in the future, even when the statements and argumentation an administration makes are primarily accurate and verifiable.

Muro, Melanie. "The role of social learning in participatory planning & management of water resources." Thesis, Cranfield University, 2008. http://dspace.lib.cranfield.ac.uk/handle/1826/3513.

Full text
Abstract:
Natural Resource Management processes are undergoing major transformations: technical and regulatory mechanisms are no longer considered sufficiently adaptive to address the complexity and uncertainty which characterise contemporary challenges in the sector, thus motivating wider use of integrated and collaborative approaches. Against this background, new models of participative management are encouraged which emphasise social learning among stakeholders. Yet, reported research which unambiguously demonstrates the role and impact of social learning remains sparse. This thesis contributes to a better understanding of the conditions under which social learning occurs, and most importantly the dynamics and benefits of social learning by systematically collecting evidence of the processes and impacts attributed to social learning. The research which employs a sequential mixed methods research design is undertaken with stakeholders involved in various engagement activities forming part of the implementation of the WFD in the UK, Ireland, and Germany and expands the still limited empirical knowledge base on social leaning in stakeholder interaction. Findings demonstrate that participatory platforms are shaped by processes of social learning although they are more noticeable as collaborative initiatives mature. Also, there is some degree of variation in the extent to which people learn or change, with stakeholders readily acquiring knowledge and improving relationships. However, the transformation of views and the development of a shared group identity seem to be limited. Findings clearly illustrate the multitude of factors that constrain the occurrence of learning processes and eventually limit the extent to which these can contribute to sustainable NRM. Foremost, this study reinforces the importance of the actual communicative learning process, the quality and intensity of which is largely influenced by the organisational arrangements and, more fundamentally, the ability of the stakeholders to shape the process.

Abstract:
What follows is not the biography of William Douw Lighthall, 1857-1954, but a chapter in the larger tradition of Canadian intellectual history. Lighthall remained a staunch imperialist, believing that Canada's future would find its fullest expression within the British Empire, and an adament idealist, asserting the primacy of individual responsibility and community rights. Together these two strains of thought, imperialism and idealism, formed the leitmotif of Lighthall's career: as a poet, novelist and anthologist Lighthall never questioned society's values and mores, he stressed them; similarly, as an urban reformer he underestimated the power of organized capital and, in the end, advocated repressive reforms. Although he was neither a particularly good writer nor a particularly effective reformer, Lighthall nonetheless preached a socialist vision of society--organic, collective, as something independent of the individuals who happened to live there.

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to describe how persons with Whiplash associated disorder experience how the pain affects them in their daily life. The design of the study was descriptive with qualitative, individual interviews, questionnaire with background facts of the examination group, and diary notes from persons with pain of WAD. Method for selection was convenience. Through contact with the association of whiplash group in a county in middle of Sweden, the majority of the examination group for the study was found. Five persons where given information about the study, one of them choose not to take part of the study, and one of the persons did not complete the study. One further person was asked to participate in the study and did take part and completed. Four persons choose to take part and completed the study, all women and between the ages 31-60. The result is presented in categories: To live with pain of WAD, Loss of quality of life, Changes in life after injury, Consequences of activity, Relations and isolation, Pain and sleep. The legible emerge that could be seen in the study was that planning the days was necessary to handle the intensity of pain. The pain controlled the days and the social relations to friends and relatives experience deteriorated because the degree of experienced pain controlled the day. All persons in the examine group emphasized that their injury can not be seen, and because that the acceptance for their injury and pain is low from the society.

This work studies Word Sense Disambiguation (WSD) in the Biomedicine domain for English language, using external knowledge sources. Among the existing proposals for the selection of a sense for an ambiguous word, there is the graph-based approach. This approach uses a metric in the evaluation of graphs containing candidates to the correct sense for the ambiguous word. In this research, a set of metrics is analyzed individually, and, based on this evaluation, we propose a hybrid model for the selection of the metrics in order to determine the most adequate metric to be employed. The model makes use of a set of features and heuristics that determine a semi-supervised solution for WSD. The results obtained with experiments show an improvement in performance and reveal new perspectives of research. The proposed model raises the hit rate to 68,48%, increasing significantly in 3,52% the rate reported in literature.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Minimalste Drainagemengen (
The increased shortage of water, were as the ecological pollution through fertilisers and pesticides, requires a controlled and precise amount of water inset. The determination of the water balance in the SPAC-System by technological measurements is reached by measuring on the individual components substrate, plant and atmosphere. The direct measuring on the plant by the Phytomonitoring-Technology is meaningful for the determination of the factual water status of the plant. A new developed Phytomonitoring (EPM 2005 or 2006), which is based on gas exchange measurements of individual plant leaves by cuvettes, was used for measuring the momentary transpirations intensity of plant cultures. The precision and representatively of the method was tested on different seasons under north European (Berlin, Germany) and south European (Thessaloniki, Greece) greenhouse conditions. The tensiometer control method as well as a time-scheduled irrigation system were used for comparison purposes. Tensiometers were used for monitoring the suction course in the substrate. In comparison to other Phytomonitoring-systems gives this one a better transmissibility of the measurement on big canopies. A high coefficient of determination of the regression line between the measured transpirations intensity (and photosynthesis intensity) of two sites with the same conditions, was found. This improves the homogeneity of the mass exchange in greenhouse canopies. Water balances were builded over long periods to prove the transmissivity of the measurements over the whole canopy. The measured transpiration sums were high correlated to the calculated ones (through the water balance equation). The drain target of 20-30% (usual for the practical experience) of the irrigation scheduling method, based on the measured transpiration sum, could be reached even under high radiation and low humidity conditions. The substrate of a tomato stand irrigated after the transpirationsummethod (switch threshold: 3 l transpiration sum, irrigation amount: 4 l) showed a suction-course comparable to the one of a tensiometercontroled stand (switch threshold: 50 hPa, irrigation amount: 3 l). There were no significant differences in the fruit number, leaf number or planthight between the two canopies. The water was efficiently consummated in the tensiometercontroled stand, were as the yields were significantly not different. Minimal drain water amounts (

With the aim of becoming more efficient, many organizations -- companies, governmental entities, research centers, etc -- choose to use software tools for supporting the accomplishment of its processes. An option that becomes more popular is the usage of Business Process Management Systems (BPM), which are generic tools, that is, not specific to any organization and highly configurable to the domain needs of any organization. One of the main responsibilities of BPM Systems is to provide exception handling mechanisms for the execution of business process instances. Exceptions, if ignored or incorrectly handled, may induce the abortion of instance executions and, depending on the gravity of the situation, induce failures on BPM Systems or even on subjacent systems (operational system, database management systems, etc.). Thus, exception handling mechanisms aim to solve the exceptional situation or stopping its collateral effects by ensuring, at least, a graceful degradation to the system. In this work, we study some of the main deficiencies of present exception handling models -- in the context of BPM Systems -- and present solutions based on Advanced Transaction Models to bypass them. We do this through the improvement of exception handling mechanisms from WED-flow, a business process modelling and instance execution managing approach. Lastly, we extend the WED-tool, an implementation of WED-flow approach, through the development of its failure recovery manager.

The proposed model raises the hit rate to 68,48%, increasing significantly in 3,52% the rate reported in literature

Abstract:

This abstract describes the bachelor degree thesis in computer technology at Växjö University written by Philip Albertson during the spring term of 2007. At the company BSR in Växjö, Sweden there is a new project under development called WBD – Web based diagnostics. The aim of the project is to make car diagnostics available to ordinary people at a decent cost. The system consists of three parts; a module to plug in the car, a server to handle the information and a client to allow the customers to reach the information about their car. My part in this project was to specify how to reach certain parameters on the CAN-bus in cars from VAG (Volkswagen Auto Group) and Saab. The company was satisfied with the results since they provided a good basis to further develop the module prototype built by the company EDAB (Elektronik Design AB) in Sundsvall, Sweden.

Brody, Samuel. "Closing the gap in WSD : supervised results with unsupervised methods." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/3981.

Abstract:
Word-Sense Disambiguation (WSD), holds promise for many NLP applications requiring broad-coverage language understanding, such as summarization (Barzilay and Elhadad, 1997) and question answering (Ramakrishnan et al., 2003). Recent studies have also shown that WSD can benefit machine translation (Vickrey et al., 2005) and information retrieval (Stokoe, 2005). Much work has focused on the computational treatment of sense ambiguity, primarily using data-driven methods. The most accurate WSD systems to date are supervised and rely on the availability of sense-labeled training data. This restriction poses a significant barrier to widespread use of WSD in practice, since such data is extremely expensive to acquire for new languages and domains. Unsupervised WSD holds the key to enable such application, as it does not require sense-labeled data. However, unsupervised methods fall far behind supervised ones in terms of accuracy and ease of use. In this thesis we explore the reasons for this, and present solutions to remedy this situation. We hypothesize that one of the main problems with unsupervised WSD is its lack of a standard formulation and general purpose tools common to supervised methods. As a first step, we examine existing approaches to unsupervised WSD, with the aim of detecting independent principles that can be utilized in a general framework. We investigate ways of leveraging the diversity of existing methods, using ensembles, a common tool in the supervised learning framework. This approach allows us to achieve accuracy beyond that of the individual methods, without need for extensive modification of the underlying systems. Our examination of existing unsupervised approaches highlights the importance of using the predominant sense in case of uncertainty, and the effectiveness of statistical similarity methods as a tool for WSD. However, it also serves to emphasize the need for a way to merge and combine learning elements, and the potential of a supervised-style approach to the problem. Relying on existing methods does not take full advantage of the insights gained from the supervised framework. We therefore present an unsupervised WSD system which circumvents the question of actual disambiguation method, which is the main source of discrepancy in unsupervised WSD, and deals directly with the data. Our method uses statistical and semantic similarity measures to produce labeled training data in a completely unsupervised fashion. This allows the training and use of any standard supervised classifier for the actual disambiguation. Classifiers trained with our method significantly outperform those using other methods of data generation, and represent a big step in bridging the accuracy gap between supervised and unsupervised methods. Finally, we address a major drawback of classical unsupervised systems – their reliance on a fixed sense inventory and lexical resources. This dependence represents a substantial setback for unsupervised methods in cases where such resources are unavailable. Unfortunately, these are exactly the areas in which unsupervised methods are most needed. Unsupervised sense-discrimination, which does not share those restrictions, presents a promising solution to the problem. We therefore develop an unsupervised sense discrimination system. We base our system on a well-studied probabilistic generative model, Latent Dirichlet Allocation (Blei et al., 2003), which has many of the advantages of supervised frameworks. The model’s probabilistic nature lends itself to easy combination and extension, and its generative aspect is well suited to linguistic tasks. Our model achieves state-of-the-art performance on the unsupervised sense induction task, while remaining independent of any fixed sense inventory, and thus represents a fully unsupervised, general purpose, WSD tool.

Full text
Abstract:
Grapheme-based speech recognition systems are faster to develop, but typically do not reach the same level of performance as phoneme-based systems. Using Afrikaans speech recognition as a case study, we first analyse the reasons for the discrepancy in performance, before introducing a technique for improving the performance of standard grapheme-based systems. It is found that by handling a relatively small number of irregular words through phoneme-to-grapheme (P2G) transliteration – transforming the original orthography of irregular words to an ‘idealised’ orthography – grapheme-based accuracy can be improved. An analysis of speech recognition accuracy based on word categories shows that P2G transliteration succeeds in improving certain word categories in which grapheme-based systems typically perform poorly, and that the problematic categories can be identified prior to system development. An evaluation is offered of when category-based P2G transliteration is beneficial and methods to implement the technique in practice are discussed. Comparative results are obtained for a second language (Vietnamese) in order to determine whether the technique can be generalised.

Abstract:
Business processes management is an active area which have received increased attention from research and industry communities. A major concern is the selection of the best approach for modeling and implementing business processes. Nowadays, organizations have business processes with complex structures, which are reevaluated and adjusted frequently, requiring flexibility from modeling languages. In addition, current business processes also require implementation environments capable of ensuring execution reliability, especially in case of failures. Although several transactional models have been proposed in order to guarantee transactional properties adapted to the context of business processes, the implementation of transactional processes still offers a scenario with several theoretical and practical challenges. In this work, we present an implementation of WED-flow approach for controlling transactional processes. WED-flow is an approach which combines the concepts of advanced transactional models, events and data states for the purpose of reducing exception handling complexity. The developed software tool is able of controlling the execution of business processes instances, allows incremental evolution of the designed model and also provides the necessary structure to support recovery mechanisms implementation to handle instances interruptions caused by exceptions.

Abstract:
“Global floods and extreme rainfall events have surged by more than 50% in the past decade and recent studies show that they are occurring four times higher than in 1980” (Neslen, 2018). At the same time, the urban population is rising. Today, 55% of the world’s population lives in urban areas and it is estimated to increase to 70% by 2050 (United Nations, 2018). This expansion of urbanized areas is correlated with the increase of impermeable surfaces that, in case of extreme weather events, are not able to drain the water efficiently. The rainfall-runoff is channelled from roads, parking lots, buildings, and other impervious surfaces to storm drains and sewers that cannot handle the volume. The high ratio of impermeable surfaces and the increased extreme rainfall events cause severe environmental, social, economical problems in urban areas. Merely technical and engineering solutions are no sufficient, therefore a new approach that can maintain and adapt the natural water cycle inside the urban areas is needed. Ecosystem services and resilience thinking have become key principles in adaptation strategies at different levels, from international policies (e.g. Sustainable Development Goals) to local actions (e.g. Copenhagen adaptation plan 2015) and design (e.g. climate resilient San Kjeld in Copenhagen). In this scenario, the design approach of Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) aims to promote resilience at the local level by managing stormwater, encouraging the defence of the aesthetic value of green and blue areas. WSUD is a multidisciplinary approach that involves water management, urban planning, architecture, and landscape design. The main idea of WSUD is that sustainable stormwater systems should be beautiful, meaningful, and educational (Echols, 2007). This master thesis explores the concept of Water Sensitive Urban Design and its application in the cities of Copenhagen, Malmö and Rotterdam. The case study of PHVision in Heidelberg, Germany, is analysed from the concept of WSUD. Design improvements are suggested stemming from the analysed European examples and the theoretical background.

Abstract:
The number of international students studying abroad has doubled since the year 2000 and there are nearly five million students that are enrolled outside their country of origin. Over the past ten years new insights and approaches to the internationalisation of higher education have arisen which has influenced global research and education. Student mobility data is a component of internationalisation data. internationally mobile students are defined as students who have crossed international borders from their countries with the objective to study. Currently, there are several international organisations and projects that manage student mobility data from various Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) across the globe and report on this data. Two of these organisations are the Open Doors Report and Project Atlas. The organisations collect Data for Africa, although it is not as detailed and useful as the data provided about other countries. Since the number of students studying abroad has doubled since the year 2000, the amount of student mobility data kept by data collection agencies and HEIs has also increased. The data collected is not always accurate and this poses a data management problem. This study conducted a survey sent to international offices at various HEIs in South Africa and Africa. The survey investigates the current state of student mobility data management in HEIs. The survey results revealed that the international offices are currently dissatisfied with student mobility data management and will be willing to provide international student data to an African data repository. This study proposes the design and development of a web-based student mobility data repository, known as the African International Portal (AIP). The study identified design guidelines and requirements for a web-based data repository. The requirements, design and design guidelines were used to guide the development of the prototype. Heuristic evaluations were conducted on the prototype in order to identify any major usability problems. Findings revealed that the overall perceptions of the prototype were positive and can be attributed to the design considerations and guidelines used during the development phase. The prototype was evaluated using a full usability evaluation that determined the usefulness, effectiveness and efficiency of the prototype when users are in the process of managing student mobility data. The results indicate that the participants found the AIP to be an effective, efficient and a satisfactory means of managing student mobility data.

Abstract:

The aims of the present thesis were to evaluate the management of acute WAD and to develop, describe and evaluate a cognitive behavioural approach for the physiotherapy management of long-term WAD as well as to study the predictors and mediating factors for long-term disability and pain after a whiplash injury.

Two approaches for acute and chronic WAD were evaluated in experimental studies. Fifty-nine patients with acute whiplash injury (study I) and 33 patients with chronic WAD (study V), were randomised into experimental and control groups. In addition, three chronic WAD patients participated in an experimental single case study (study IV). Home exercise programmes for patients with acute WAD were used in study I. In study IV a physiotherapy management with integrated components of cognitive-behavioural origin was tried for chronic WAD patients. In study V physiotherapy treatment in primary care units and a physiotherapy management with integrated components of cognitive-behavioural origin was tried for chronic WAD patients. Study I showed that a home exercise programme including training of neck and shoulder range of motion (ROM), relaxation and general advice, appears to be a sufficient treatment for most acute WAD patients. Further, the results of study IV and V suggest that cognitive behavioural components m be useful in physiotherapy treatment for patients with chronic WAD, but its contribution is not yet fully understood.

Study III showed that the significance of coping as an explanatory factor for disability increased during the one-year period after a whiplash injury. In study V it was concluded that self-efficacy is related to patients' use of different coping styles. A model to study coping as a mediator between self-efficacy and disability was therefore introduced. In a path-analytic framework, data from subjects in study I were re-analysed to illustrate a theoretical standpoint that emphasises the process of coping. With regard to disability, the proportion of explained variance increased from 39% at three weeks after the accident, to 79% at one-year follow-up. These results also show that coping has a crucial and mediating role between self-efficacy and disability. Positive long- term outcomes in WAD-patients would therefore be improved by, shortly after an accident, boosting self- efficacy and teaching patients to use active, adaptive coping strategies to manage their problems.

In recent decades, various perspectives have emerged that draw attention to the construction of gender and gender inequalities. This discussion examines feminist perspectives in relation to development and development's effects on women in pastoral societies. The article compares the Women in Development (WID), eco-feminist and postmodernist approaches to development and seeks to understand what kind of criticism these theoretical orientations can offer on pastoral development projects. I focus especially on the effects of development on women's bargaining power within the household, using data from my own fieldwork in Niger and records from other pastoral societies. My discussion shows that while WID criticizes the pastoral development as being gender-biased and reducing women's bargaining power within the household, the ecofeminist and postmodernist perspectives would question the development practice itself and attempt to deconstruct the dimensions of power within the field of development.

Full text
Abstract:
John Berryman, Sylvia Plath and W. D. Snodgrass are each commonly associated with the poetic movement known as ‘confessionalism’ which emerged in the USA in the late 1950s and early 1960s. They did not, however, write works of undiluted autobiography; through close readings of their Holocaust verse, I take the poetry, rather than the lives of the poets, to be the ultimate authority on what they had to say about history, about the ethics of representing historical atrocity in art, and about the ‘existential’ questions that the Nazi genocide raises. Chapter 1 offers the first sustained analysis of Berryman’s unfinished collection of Holocaust poems, The Black Book (1948 - 1958) - one of the earliest engagements by an American writer with this particular historical subject. In my second chapter I look at some of Plath’s fictionalised dramatic monologues, which, I argue, offer self-reflexive meditations on representational poetics, the commercialisation of the Holocaust, and the ways in which the event reshapes our understanding of individual identity and culture. My third chapter focuses on W. D. Snodgrass’s The Fuehrer Bunker (1995) - a formally inventive cycle of dramatic monologues spoken by leading Nazi ministers, which can be read as an heuristic text whose ultimate objective is the moral instruction of its readers. Finally, I suggest that while all three poets offer distinct responses to the Holocaust, they each consider how non-victims approach the genocide through acts of identification. For Snodgrass, it is important that we do identify with the perpetrators, who were not all that different from ourselves; for Berryman and Plath, however, the difficulty of identifying with the victims marks out the limits of historical understanding.

The United States invaded Iraq in 2003 to compel compliance with UN disarmament mandates. The invasion exposed the lack of a standing organization to conduct WMD elimination as a serious capability gap in the U.S. military force structure. This thesis demonstrates why it is necessary to establish such a capability. It argues that the United States cannot rely solely on multilateral, cooperative approaches to eliminate a determined adversaryâ s weapons program. While non-coercive tactics are preferred, the mixed results of twelve-years of UN verification in Iraq show that a viable threat of force must accompany these approaches in order to induce compliance with UN Security Council disarmament mandates. Additionally, the U.S. elimination effort in Iraq demonstrated that ad hoc approaches inadequately address this capability shortfall. The lack of integrated training, unsecured sites because of inadequate prioritization, and misaligned intelligence assets are just some of the problems that occurred during the ad hoc OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM elimination operation. When cooperative, nonproliferation measures fail to rollback aggressor statesâ WMD programs, DoD must have the capability to compel compliance if called upon. This thesis makes recommendations to facilitate the development of a viable and sustainable WMD elimination capability.

Abstract:
Features of software exposed as Web services are becoming more common and their forms of composition and coordination are increasingly essential. Orchestration and choreography, traditional approaches for Web service compositions, are provided by tools that manage business processes with different approaches. Despite the success of these approaches, there are still challenges to be overcome such as the difficulty of maintaining flows in existing control, the communication cost associated with Web service interactions, knowledge of the business process by the services and even their compatibility in service compositions. As an alternative to traditional approaches, this paper proposes the use of WED-flow approach for Web services composition, so that the execution of business processes is driven by changes in data states. In our approach, the control flow is not a requirement but a consequence of the Web service execution, which provides greater flexibility for the development and maintenance of applications. More specifically, the first contribution of this work is to propose and evaluate possible scenarios of orchestration and choreography according to predefined criteria. The second contribution of this work is the implementation of WED-flow approach for Web service compositions, as well as its validation in the choreography and orchestration scenarios.

Bacterial cellulose (BC), which is synthesized and secreted by the gram negative bacterium, Gluconacetobacter sp.WU2、Gluconacetobacter sp.WU3, displays unique physical, chemical, and mechanical properties including a high crystallinity, a high water holding capacity, a well-developed surface area comprised of nanofibers, elasticity, mechanical strength, and biocompatibility. Static batch fermentations for bacterial cellulose production were studied in carbon sources, nitrogen sources, pH, temperature, organic acid (citric acid, succinic acid and acetic acid), ethanol concentration (0-15%) in flask under 30℃ by isolated. Gluconacetobacter sp. WU2 and Gluconacetobacter sp. WU3. These results showed that Gluconacetobacter sp.WU3 was the best BC producer without pH controlled, the WU3 strain could produce BC at a yield exceeding 1.92 g/L of glucose/peptone mixed medium, which was comparable to the yielde by WU2 at 30 ℃. Structural changes in never-dried, disintegrated bacterial cellulose by various drying process were examined. The pretreatmented/ treatmented bacterial cellulose were characterized by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Scanning electron microscope (SEM). In additionally, Hunter lab colour parameters were determined to assess the effect of different alkali treatments on the colour characteristics of the bacterial cellulose. The overall quality of the freeze dried membranes had higher ‘L’ values.
