Abstract:
In the present study an attempt was made to determine the relative effectiveness of various warm-up activities in eliminating postrest warm-up decrement (WUD) in the tennis serve. Seventy highly-skilled players hit 20 serves, rested for either 5 or 15 min, and then attempted 4 final serves. During the last 2 min of the rest period, players continued to rest, ran in place, engaged in mental imagery, performed practice swings, or repeatedly hit the ball against the ground and caught it. In addition to estimates of serving accuracy, measures of somatic and cognitive arousal were obtained at the beginning and end of the rest interval. Multiple regression procedures revealed that reductions in WUD were significantly related to the restoration of prerest arousal levels. Between-group comparisons indicated that practice swings were the most effective warm-up activity for restoring somatic and cognitive arousal to prerest levels and for eliminating WUD. Theoretical discussion centered on possible applications of Nacson and Schmidt's (1971) activity-set hypothesis to the tennis serve.

Abstract:
ObjectivesTo explore contextual factors that increase vulnerabilities to negative sexual and reproductive health (SRH) outcomes and possible differences in SRH-related behaviours and the needs of women who use drugs (WUD) through non-injecting and injecting routes.DesignQualitative study design using semi-structured in-depth interviews.ParticipantsTwenty women who injected drugs in the past 3 months and 28 women who reported using drugs through non-injecting routes in the past 1 month.SettingInterviews were conducted at community-based, drop-in centres in Delhi, India.ResultsStudy findings illustrate that WUD were sexually active and had multiple sex partners including clients of sex work. Transient relationships were reported and many participants engaged in unsafe sex. Factors which affected safe sex behaviours included: gender power imbalance, limited agency for decision-making, lack of accurate information for correct self-risk assessment, and being under the influence of drugs. Despite high awareness, low and inconsistent contraceptive use was reported. Some participants were coerced to conceive while a few others reported their inability to conceive. Violence was a key determinant for SRH outcomes. Perception of certain adverse health outcomes (such as infertility) to be ‘common and expected among WUD’ influenced access to healthcare. Further, healthcare providers’ stigmatising attitudes and lack of women-centric services deterred women from uptake of healthcare services.ConclusionFindings highlight that SRH-related behaviours and needs of this group are a complex interplay of multiple determinants which need to be addressed at all levels: individual, family, community and institutional. It is imperative to roll out a ‘one-stop-shop’ for a comprehensive package of health services. Expansion of existing drop-in-centres could be considered for setting-up community-based women-centric services with appropriate linkage to drug dependence treatment and reproductive health services.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of different vertical positions of an asymmetrical load on the anticipatory postural adjustments phase of gait initiation. Sixty-eight college students (32 males, 36 females; age: 23.65 ± 3.21 years old; weight: 69.98 ± 8.15 kg; height: 1.74 ± 0.08 m) were enrolled in the study. Ground reaction forces and moments were collected using two force platforms. The participants completed three trials under each of the following random conditions: no-load (NL), waist uniformly distributed load (WUD), shoulder uniformly distributed load (SUD), waist stance foot load (WST), shoulder stance foot load (SST), waist swing foot load (WSW), and shoulder swing foot load (SSW). The paired Hotelling’s T-square test was used to compare the experimental conditions. The center of pressure (COP) time series were significantly different for the SUD vs. NL, SST vs. NL, WST vs. NL, and WSW vs. NL comparisons. Significant differences in COP time series were observed for all comparisons between waist vs. shoulder conditions. Overall, these differences were greater when the load was positioned at the shoulders. For the center of mass (COM) time series, significant differences were found for the WUD vs. NL and WSW vs. NL conditions. However, no differences were observed with the load positioned at the shoulders. In conclusion, only asymmetrical loading at the waist produced significant differences, and the higher the extra load, the greater the effects on COP behavior. By contrast, only minor changes were observed in COM behavior, suggesting that the changes in COP (the controller) behavior are adjustments to maintain the COM (controlled object) unaltered.

Abstract:
Purpose This study aims to evaluate the immunomodulatory effect of traditional drink of black cincau-based wedang uwuh (WUB) on alloxan-induced diabetic rats. Design/methodology/approach WUB consists of dried herbs such as black cincau leaves (Mesona palustris BL), red ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc), cloves (Syzgium aromaticum), sappan wood (Caesalpinia sappan Lin) and soursop leaves (Annona muricata). In this study, the rats were divided into five groups: normal control, diabetic control and three groups of WUB (WUB 13.5 mL/kg and WUB 27 mL/kg) or wedang uwuh commercial (WUC) treated diabetic groups. WUB or WUC was administered by gavage for three days after rats were confirmed diabetic induced by alloxan; these injections were continued for 28 days. At the end of the experiment, the spleen of rats was analyzed using flow cytometry. Data were analyzed by ANOVA followed by Tukey test using Minitab version 16.0. Findings This study showed that WUB significantly inhibited the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines (interferon-Y [IFN-ɣ] and tumor necrosis factor-α [TNF-a]) and anti-inflammatory cytokines (interleukin 10 [IL-10] and transforming growth factor-β [TGF-ß]), and achieved a balance between pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines that were not significantly different from normal controls. WUB 27 was able to regulate the production of relative average cytokines IFN-ɣ (7.6 ± 3.5; p = 0.010), TNF-a (8.7 ± 2.4; p = 0.018), IL-10 (6.3 ± 2.4; p = 0.001) and TGF-ß (7.4 ± 2.1; p = 0.004) that was significantly different from diabetic control. This study’s results validate that the use of WUB can result in immunomodulatory activity in diabetic rats. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study on the immunomodulatory effect of WUB which is developed based on WUC; WUB has been used by Indonesian people as a functional beverage which acts as an immune booster and body warmer.

Abstract:
SummaryLoru Protected Area covers 220 ha and is situated on the east coast of Espiritu Santo, the largest island in the archipelago of Vanuatu. Despite its small size, 23 of the 64 breeding land and freshwater birds of Vanuatu were sighted in Loru and 10 of the 23 restricted-range species, including two Vulnerable, one Near-threatened and five species endemic to the archipelago. Transects were used to estimate the densities of populations which were either easy to see or had distinctive calls. Variable circular plots were also used to estimate density and to examine the relationship between bird populations and habitat. Plots were allocated to one of two categories, undisturbed, mature lowland forest or disturbed, secondary growth forest. Populations of three species differed significantly between the two habitats: Red Jungle Fowl Gallus gallus, Golden Whistler Pachycephala pectoralis and Vanuatu Flycatcher Neolalage banksiana. All had higher densities in undisturbed forest. More protected areas need to be established on Santo and other islands in the archipelago to ensure the future survival of the Vanuatu avifauna. Abstract:
This article is devoted to a semantico-syntactic analysis of the use of seven markers of negation in Early Archaic Chinese, especially in the Zhou bronze inscriptions. The negative BU 不 which is used with intransitive verbal predicates or with adjectives, establishes a descriptive relationship between the subject and the predicate in its clause; it only shows a simple descriptive intention and takes an integral part in the presupposition. The negative marker FU 弗 is fully adverbial and is used, essentially, with transitive verbs. The marker FEI 非, establishes an attributive, descriptive relationship between the two terms of the predication inside the clause just as does BU; but it introduces a polemic value in expressing the falsity of a presupposition. The marker WU2 毋, in contrast with WU1 勿, does not come under the category of a deontic modality. The obligation which it shows does not come from the speaker (or from any other source) but is internal to the subject-predicate relationship. The negation in this case is to be taken as a statement of fact and not as an injunction. However, according to the observations here, WU2 毋 refers to the epistemic modal category. That why it can express the double value of both "certainty" and “necessity” according to the context. The negative WANG 勿 (the negative counterpart of YOU 有 "existence" or "possession") is used to express the possession of dependence. In addition, because of its existential value, it allows for presenting certain terms in both a restrictive and an extensive sense. Finally WU3 無 is most often attached to a substantive and forms thus a marginal expansion (in a syntactically dependent position) serving to characterize a nominal phrase, a verbal phrase, or an entire clause.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effectiveness of using imagery in eliminating post-rest warm-up decrement (WUD) in the volleyball serve, and to assess whether individual differences in imagery ability mediated any possible reductions in WUD. Thirty-nine State level volleyball players were placed into one of 3 groups, High Imagery, Control, and Low Imagery, based on their scores on the Vividness of Movement Imagery Questionnaire (VMIQ). Players served 15 balls at a designated target area, rested for 10 minutes, and then attempted 5 more serves. During the last 2 minutes of the rest period, the players in the High and Low Imagery groups engaged in imagery of successful serving every 10 seconds, for a total of 12 repetitions. The Control group continued to read a magazine article. To ensure adherence to the imagery instructions, players were evaluated at completion of testing. Results revealed the High Imagery group was significantly better on serving performance post-rest, however there was no significant differences when comparing the mean of the last 3 pre-rest trials with the first post-rest trial. The interaction approached significance (p_= .091) and suggested that the High Imagery group may have benefited from the use of imagery. These findings have implications for the Nacson and Schmidt's (1971) activity-set hypothesis that states that an appropriate task will reduce WUD. It may need to include the effect individual differences, such as imagery ability, may have on the performance of that task.

Abstract:
By adopting the Policy for Global Development (PGD) in 2003 the Swedish parliament established gender mainstreaming as a goal in development cooperation policy, thereby emphasizing women’s role as agents of empowerment in development. This has not always been the case. During most of the history of Swedish foreign aid women issues have been handled separately and development policy mainly based on a male perspective. A lot of research has focused on trends in the global debate over how to better integrate women in development process, but much less academic attention has focused on how Swedish development policy has addressed the issue and how women have been referred to in development policy since the origin of Swedish foreign aid. According to the theories of critical discourse analysis (CDA) our written and spoken language influence our view of the reality and how we understand society. Following that logic, how women are referred to in Swedish development policy influence how women are perceived by the actors of development cooperation. Through a critical discourse analysis of official Swedish governmental documents concerning foreign aid, such as government bills and letters of appropriation, this study aims to detect discourses of Swedish development policy regarding women in developing countries. Furthermore it aims to understand how these discourses have related to the global debate about women’s role in development. This study observes six discourses of women in developing countries in the material: Women as passive recipient, agent of empowerment, the savior, motherhood-women as mothers, the other woman, and the man as the norm. The analysis shows Sweden’s development policies following the global discussions fairly coherently during much of the period, with 80s as the only possible exception.

Abstract:
Sofia Hedberg: "Wut is Wut?" En studie av maskuliniteter och sexualiteter inom hiphop-genren. Uppsala universitet: Institutionen för musikvetenskap. C-uppsats 15 hp. 2013. This essay examines how a group of male, homosexual or bisexual African-American rappers from New York City are challenging the norms of hypermasculinity and heteronormativity within the musical genre of hip-hop. The study investigates both visual and textual expressions from Mykki Blanco, Le1f and Zebra Katz, and does so through the artists' videos and lyrics. The artistic expressions are continually compared to those of more traditional rappers, in order to illuminate both similarities and differencies. To provide a wider understanding of such terms as masculinity, gender identity and sexuality, a number of theoretical perspectives were taken into account. Queer theory provides the key theoretical perspective, but R.W. Connell's theory about masculinity and Yvonne Hirdman's on the 'gender contract' were also important to the study. The essay's result shows that the rappers use different tools to communicate their identities and sexualities, mainly the body, choice of language and by playing with stereotypical gender identities and roles. Although several similarities were found amongst the three rappers, the study showed that they all use the given tools in separate ways, and the fact that they are homosexual or bisexual does not, and should not, place them under any sort of homogeneous category.

Roussel, Magali. "Variabilité intraspécifique de l’efficience d’utilisation de l’eau dans une famille de chêne pédonculé (Quercus robur L.) : causes physiologiques et/ou anatomiques." Thesis, Nancy 1, 2008. http://www.theses.fr/2008NAN10090/document.

Full text
Abstract:
Pedunculate oak is a species that shows a large intraspecific variability of water-use efficiency (WUE). The genetic determinism of WUE in this species has been demonstrated. WUE is a complex trait which is defined at a leaf level as the ratio of net CO2 assimilation rate (A) on stomatal conductance for water vapor (gs). This ratio – estimated with carbon isotope composition of organic matter (?13C) – is therefore influenced by numerous physiological or anatomical traits that influence A (chlorophyll content, thickness of leaf tissue) or gs (stomatal density…). The comparison of genotypes belonging to a same full-sib family of pedunculate oak, in non-limiting conditions, for these foliar traits has shown that the variability of WUE in this family was linked to the variability of gs instead of photosynthetic capacity. To go further, a study has been done on the possibility to use the variations of the isotope composition of oxygen (16O/18O) of leaf water and leaf organic matter to decompose the differences in water-use efficiency in its photosynthetic and transpiratory components. The results of this study has shown that the 18O signature coulb be used as a proxy for gs for pedunculate oak, but only in controlled conditions, and after amelioration of organic matter extraction procedures

Hawkins, Paul Martin. "DURHAM : a word sense disambiguation system." Thesis, Durham University, 1999. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/4493/.

Full text
Abstract:
Ever since the 1950's when Machine Translation first began to be developed, word sense disambiguation (WSD) has been considered a problem to developers. In more recent times, all NLP tasks which are sensitive to lexical semantics potentially benefit from WSD although to what extent is largely unknown. The thesis presents a novel approach to the task of WSD on a large scale. In particular a novel knowledge source is presented named contextual information. This knowledge source adopts a sub-symbolic training mechanism to learn information from the context of a sentence which is able to aid disambiguation. The system also takes advantage of frequency information and these two knowledge sources are combined. The system is trained and tested on SEMCOR. A novel disambiguation algorithm is also developed. The algorithm must tackle the problem of a large possible number of sense combinations in a sentence. The algorithm presented aims to make an appropriate choice between accuracy and efficiency. This is performed by directing the search at a word level. The performance achieved on SEMCOR is reported and an analysis of the various components of the system is performed. The results achieved on this test data are pleasing, but are difficult to compare with most of the other work carried out in the field. For this reason the system took part in the SENSEVAL evaluation which provided an excellent opportunity to extensively compare WSD systems. SENSEVAL is a small scale WSD evaluation using the HECTOR lexicon. Despite this, few adaptations to the system were required. The performance of the system on the SENSEVAL task are reported and have also been presented in [Hawkins, 2000].
