Martin, Adrian. Mysteries of Cinema. NL Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789462986831.

Abstract:
The major essays of the distinguished and prolific Australian-born film critic Adrian Martin have long been difficult to access, so this anthology, which collects highlights of his work in one volume, will be welcomed throughout film studies. Martin offers indepth analysis of many genres of films while providing a broad understanding of the history of cinema and the history of film criticism and culture. These vibrant, highly personal essays, written between 1982 and 2016, balance breadth across cinema theory with almost encyclopedic detail, ranging between aesthetics, cinephilia, film genre, criticism, philosophy, and cultural politics. Mysteries of Cinema circumscribes a special cultural period that began with the dream of critique as a form of poetic writing, and today arrives at collaborative experiments in audiovisual essays. Throughout these essays, Martin pursues a particular vision of what cinema has been, what it is, and what it still could be.

Taavitsainen, Irma, Turo Hiltunen, Jeremy J. Smith, and Carla Suhr, eds. Genre in English Medical Writing, 1500–1820. Cambridge University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/9781009105347.

Full text
Abstract:
Written by an interdisciplinary team of scholars, this book offers novel perspectives on the history of medical writing and scientific thought-styles by examining patterns of change and reception in genres, discourse, and lexis in the period 1500-1820. Each chapter demonstrates in detail how changing textual forms were closely tied to major multi-faceted social developments: industrialisation, urbanisation, expanding trade, colonialization, and changes in communication, all of which posed new demands on medical care. It then shows how these developments were reflected in a range of medical discourses, such as bills of mortality, medical advertisements, medical recipes, and medical rhetoric, and provides an extensive body of case studies to highlight how varieties of medical discourse have been targeted at different audiences over time. It draws on a wide range of methodological frameworks and is accompanied by numerous relevant illustrations, making it essential reading for academic researchers and students across the human sciences.

Abstract:
The short objectives of this volume are first, to rejuvenate interest in the field of sports studies; second, to offer a platform for a wide range of studies on sports, employing a variety of approaches and perspectives, and methodologies to enliven a field of study, and third, equally important, to engender both a scholarly and informed lay readership about serious work and writing on sports. Presenting a multidisciplinary approach to sports studies, the book is a narrative of the diverse and emerging field of sports studies ranging from the viewing of sports as a microcosm of society that affords an opportunity to understand the complex relations among society, state, government and its agencies to critical analyses of the field of sport using gender and class analyses within a political economy perspective. Interspersed are case studies and an autobiographical account that not only enrich the narrative, but also demonstrate the value of different genres to understanding the field. This volume has emerged from the editors’ sociological curiosity derived not only from scholarship but from our participation in the world of sports, and as a means of productively sharing widely our exhilarating and liberating sporting experience. If it has raised more questions that it has answered, then the book has succeeded in its purpose.

Abstract:
The study of literature and medicine in the Romantic period is an established and expanding field. However, scholars have tended to focus on a few canonical writers and a small number of texts, thereby obscuring the age’s huge diversity of medical writing. This chapter takes a wider view, presenting five case studies of medically trained or medically connected writers who demonstrate the broad intersection between medical and literary culture: John Aikin, Benjamin Rush, Joanna Baillie (sister of the physician Matthew Baillie), Erasmus Darwin, and John Keats. The chapter uses these case studies to show what is distinctive or innovative about interactions between literature and medicine in the period. The case studies also represent different genres of medical literature, or different genres that became in some sense medicalized: biography, autobiography, drama, didactic poetry, and epic. Each case study includes some consideration of the reception history of the genre in question.
