Full textThe main goal of this thesis is to encourage instructors to create and deliver courses using the Internet and, most of all, to show that the process can be simple and effective. In order to support this study, four major Course Management tools are presented and analyzed: Pathway by Solis-Macromedia, LearningSpace by Lotus, WebCT by The University of British Columbia, and Virtual-U by Simon Fraser University.
As a result of this thesis, a Grades Application was developed using the Internet protocol. This application is an uncomplicated, yet effective solution for using the Web to manage, calculate, and view students' marks. With the open architecture of the Web and standard programming languages such as JavaScript and Perl, the system will execute in most computers available in universities around the world.

The World-Wide Simulation Web (WWSW) is an emergent distributed simulation environment whose use model parallels that of the World-Wide Web (WWW). The idea was developed from working with two generations of the Distributed Object-Modeling Environment (DOME). A design for the architecture of the WWSW is proposed. The specification for the WWSW was determined by examining a list of desired features, deciding who the system users were and understanding use scenarios. The architecture design covers object model representation, server structure, client application structure, and graphical user interface guidelines. An implementation is complete of the core object model, client and server applications, and user interface concepts. Initial results have been promising since many desired features such as a flat object model representation, multiple model instances support, model solving, and advanced notification have been demonstrated. However, there is still a lot of work to be done to fully realize the complete WWSW vision.

Full textThe collaboration is present in sites that appeared in the last times and become widely used, such as Flickr and YouTube. And, if on the one hand it represents the same ideals intended by the inventors of the World Wide Web, on the other hand it is a reinvented process in accordance with the new available technological possibilities at the current moment. Thus, this research seeks to deepen the understanding about collaboration and how it had developed in the net. It intends to understand the features of collaborative production in cyberspace and to verify the existence of an emergent knowledge from it. The research is divided in five parts. In the first one, the Web development highlighting its collaboration features. In the second, the formation of cyberspace through telematics. In the third, the human cognition in accordance with perspective of the complexity theories and knowledge biology. In the fourth, cognitives technologies and the reflections about coletive cognition. In the fifth, in relation with the previous subjects, the observation of collaborative potential of web architectures and how they can contribute to the knowledge production

The main purpose of this work was to analyse the new media in modern society. Such as journalism, cinema, radio and television, Internet is a medium of global communication; however, and due to the recent expansion, there still exists little study that allow us to fully understand these effects on society. Some of those studies demonstrate that these effects trigger behaviour alterations that are to this moment still unknown, and therefore these need to be studied. It is time for different analysis in regards to the internet, which can explain how it became part of our day life in such a rapid way. In the meantime, there has been little research into the way of how the use of the internet adapts in the day life of other countries and international comparisons are non-existent. In a general way, the studies that exist focus on the dimension of individuals that operate the Internet, and in the potentials of that market, instead of focusing on the characteristics associated with its use. In order to comprehend this new reality a depth research has been done in relation to the new media thematic, allowing us to understand the necessary basics in order to construct the second part of this work. Therefore, and through an on-line questionnaire, information relative to the habits and behaviours of Portuguese individuals, of both sexes, of different social classes and different ages was collected, and similar results of those found in previous studies had been identified, allowing us to verify whether or not these modules have maintained.

Full textWe have noticed that one of the biggest problems resulting from the spreading of the information diffusion tools in distributed environments (specially with the WWWInternet model) is the inconsistency of the links between the objects involved (Error 404 - File was not found). According to [WHY 95], one of the most important conditions for the quality of an hyperdocument structure is the maintenance of the integrity of the links, whatever they may be internal or external to the hyperdocument. Whenever there are hyperbase changes, changes on the structures of the papers that compose the hyperbase, or if there are changes on the semantic content of these papers, there may arise inconsistencies with the links. These inconsistencies may indicate a temporary net or server problem, as well as a resource that has been constantly moved or excluded. It’s believed that the percentage of invalid requisites raises in accordance with time, with the introduction of new resources and with the dynamics of the structure of Distributed Hyperdocument Systems. So, it's necessary to adopt models of Distributed Hyperdocument Systems that contemplate a treatment of the problem of the links' inconsistencies since their conception, using preventive techniques or developing tools and techniques to guarantee the integrity of the links, preferably by automatic mode to the models that originally don't have this integrity. Thus, this work is about the problem of links' inconsistency in Distributed Hyperdocument Systems, with special emphasis on the model: WWW (World Wide Web) [BER 92]. For that, basic concepts, history, objectives, the state of the art, architecture and necessary requirements are shown., as well as specific characteristics of the main Distributed Hyperdocument Systems. Also shown are the theoretical aspects concerning the problems produced by the links inconsistency of the technical, psychological and/or market order. Solutions found on the bibliography are shown as well as a classification of these solutions as preventives (that don't permit the problem to occur) and correctives (that are used to solve or minimize the problem) is done. These solutions may still be manual, semi-automatic or automatic. The proposed solution, classified as preventive semiautomatic, is based on data entries using the HTML form and their storage in files in textual form. The definition, objectives, functioning and detail of a prototype are presented.

This thesis presents the design and implementation of a link management system inside a content management system for the World Wide Web – Roxen CMS. Link management means that links within a web site are stored in a central database to enable the possibility for updates and other processing later on, for example when resources are moved within the site. This means that links are kept consistent at all times.
The result is a solution where links in documents are replaced by link references, which are resolved by the database when the document is shown. The design and implementation takes the current functionality of Roxen CMS into account.

As the amount of information on the World Wide Web grows, there is an increasing demand for software that can automatically process and extract information from web pages. Despite the fact that the underlying data on most web pages is structured, we cannot automatically process these web sites/pages as structured data. We need robust technologies that can automatically understand human-readable formatting and induce the underlying data structures. In this thesis, we are focused on solving a specific facet of this general unsupervised web information extraction problem. Structured data can appear in diverse forms from lists to trees to even semi-structured graphs. However, much of the information on the web appears in a flat format we call "records". In this work, we will describe a system, MURIEL, that uses supervised and unsupervised learning techniques to effectively extract records from webpages.
