Sweat and Salt Water: Selected Works is a collection of texts written by Banaban, I-Kiribati, and African-American Pacific studies scholar and educator Teresia Kieuea Teaiwa, which were put together by her sister Katerina Teaiwa and friends and colleagues April K. Henderson and Terence Wesley-Smith. Described by Katerina as '[a] true labour of love and occasional, intense grief', the book was published posthumously. While, as the editors note, ‘it is impossible to contain or present the dazzling spectrum of Teresia’s published work in just one volume’ (p. xvii), the selected texts were originally published between 1992 and 2017 and as such provide an idea of the variety of Teaiwa’s intellectual and creative writing across her career.

Abstract:
Ostrovsky’s translations of the works of Plautus, Terence, and Seneca, preserved in incomplete drafts, attend to the textual criticism related both to the principles of the work and to its aims. The example of the translation of Terence’s Hecyra in comparison with the earlier translation of Plautus’ Asinaria proves the evolution of Ostrovsky’s translation principles. While Plautus was translated without recourse to an intermediary translation, Terence was translated from the popular bilingual edition, and the translator turned to a French translation in difficult cases. The article explains how Ostrovsky worked further with passages translated from the French or with reference to the French text, in which cases, on the contrary, he translated from the Latin without reference to the French translation, and this course of initial work determined the order of further editing of the rough translation. The self-editing went in the direction of both greater accuracy and expressiveness, which in the case of using an intermediary translation proved to be a clearly contradictory task. Reconstructing the history of the text in light of the identified source of the translation allows us to clarify a number of manuscript readings, to identify the pencil edits as belonging highly likely to Ostrovsky himself, contrary to the opinion of the first publisher of the translation, and to raise the issue of the stage intention of the translation.

The Ukrainian translation of Terence Killeen’s article “The Words Many a Journalist Dreaded Hearing: «This is Stephen Joyce»” is provided. Terence Killeen is the James Joyce Centre’s research scholar (Dublin). He is the author of numerous publications devoted to James Joyce’s oeuvre. Among them, there are “«Ulysses»’ Unbound: A Reader’s Companion to James Joyce’s «Ulysses»” (2004), an essay on the earliest version of “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man” (2020) and others. He is a former journalist although still continues to publish his works on the pages of “The Irish Times”, a leading Irish newspaper (Dublin). The above-mentioned translation made by Ukrainian scholars E. Honcharenko and L. Baisara is accompanied by the detailed and meticulously collected explanatory notes to the article. This piece of work deals with Stephen James Joyce (1932-2020), a grandson of the outstanding Irishman, James Joyce. An eminent Irish writer wrote the poem “Ecce Puer” to commemorate the birth of his grandson and the death of his own father John Joyce, the translation of which is also presented in this article. Stephen Joyce was the only son of George [Giorgio] Joyce, James Joyce’s son. Stephen was a grandson and the last surviving direct descendant of James Joyce. The article highlights Stephen’s real attitude to the literary inheritance of his late grandfather. The translation of the article is published with the Terence Killeen’s kind permission. The original version of the article was published in the Dublin’s newspaper “The Irish Times” on February 23, 2020. The great British filmmaker Terence Davies adapts Edith Wharton's American classic, The House of Mirth, and the sensibilities of author and filmmaker mesh unexpectedly, producing a film of uncommon delicacy. Simulating the traditional costume drama as it has been codified by such directors as James Ivory, Davies actually works against the most entrenched conventions of the genre by countering naturalism with artifice. This review of Davies's film examines the aesthetic strategies of this extraordinary adaptation, and places the film in the context of Davies's work and contemporary art cinema more generally.

Abstract:
This article describes a collection of rare Polonica, numbering over five hundred books, pamphlets, manuscripts, and prints and engravings, donated to the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library in 2001 by Karol Godlewski and his family. The donor’s uncle, Count Emeryk Hutten Czapski (1897–1979), assembled the extraordinary collection. The material includes works written, edited, or translated by Polish authors. The publication dates range from 1505 to the mid-1970s, with two hundred titles predating 1801. The subject matter ranges from texts written by Terence and Plutarch to biographies of Polish kings, details of famous battles, and poetry. There are also etchings of Polish personages, palaces, landscapes, or battle scenes, many of artistic importance.

AbstractHistorians of comedy can profit from a study of the sixteenth-century debates regarding the merits of Plautus (ca. 254–184 BCE), most of whose works were unknown before the late fifteenth century. Early performances and editions led to contemporary theories regarding laughter, language, and morality, often in the context of a comparison with the plays of Terence (d. 159 BCE), who was sometimes viewed as superior by upper-class audiences. From the conflicting opinions of Andrea Navagero and Francesco Florido, to the neoclassical strictures of Daniel Heinsius, this study pursues learned opinion on Plautus as he became a principal author in the European canon. Plautus’s variances from Aristotelian and Horatian precepts created a lively and lasting ferment in discussions of comedy.

Abstract The three-volume edition of Jeremy Bentham’s Economic Writings, edited by Werner Stark, was published between 1952 and 1954, and reviewed by Terence Hutchison in the Economic Journal in 1956. Based on the Stark edition, Hutchison argued that there had been a dramatic shift in Bentham’s views and policy recommendations between his earlier and later writings on political economy. With the benefit of a new, five-volume edition of Bentham’s Writings on Political Economy, edited by Michael Quinn, it can now be seen that the revolution in Bentham’s views on political economy proposed by Hutchison did not take place. On the contrary, an examination of Bentham’s treatment of fiscal and monetary policy in his principal general works on political economy, the Manual of Political Economy and the Institute of Political Economy, show a remarkable consistency, both in policy recommendations, and in the body of economic analysis in which they were based.

Abstract:
This research investigates the culturally programmatic symbolism of jazz music in film. I explore this concept through critical analysis of composer Terence Blanchard's original score for Malcolm X directed by Spike Lee (1992). I view Blanchard's music as representing a non-diegetic tone parallel that musically narrates several authentic characteristics of African-American life, culture, and the human condition as depicted in Lee's film. Blanchard's score embodies a broad spectrum of musical influences that reshape Hollywood's historically limited, and often misappropiated perceptions of jazz music within African-American culture. By combining stylistic traits of jazz and classical idioms, Blanchard reinvents the sonic soundscape in which musical expression and the black experience are represented on the big screen. My new work––Black Magic––is a musical response to the research found within this study. The through-composed piece is written in three movements for a studio orchestra. It is an homage to the musical, cultural, and entertainment contributions of African-Americans in the magical realm of Hollywood cinema.

Tradução crítica do livro VIII do \"De Lingua Latina\" do gramático Varrão com o propósito de assim estudar parte dessa obra ainda pouco divulgada em português. Nesse livro Varrão trata sobre a maneira de se expressar na escrita, e na fala - mesmo que de uma minoria ilustrada -, mas também lança seu olhar para a disposição das palavras no enunciado conforme as funções que elas aí ocupam. Isso se evidencia por ele demonstrar preocupação com as regras que deveriam ser seguidas em relação a essa disposição das palavras ao apresentar a discussão de sua época entre analogistas e anomalistas no que se refere à analogia existir ou não no âmbito da linguagem, mais precisamente no âmbito dos processos de formação de palavras em latim.
Critical translation of book VIII of the \"De Lingua Latina\" (On The Latin Language) of the grammarian Varro with the intention to study part of this book still little divulged in Portuguese. In this book Varro deals with on the way if expressing in the writing, and in it speaks - exactly that of an illustrated minority -, but also launches his look for the disposal of the words in agreement statement the functions that they occupy there. This if evidences for him to demonstrate concern with the rules that would have to be followed in relation to this disposal of the words when presenting the quarrel of its time between analogists and anomalists as for the analogy to exist or not in the scope of the language, more necessarily in the scope of the processes of formation of words in Latin.

Abstract:
Celem prezentowanej pracy doktorskiej jest odtworzenie i analiza kształtowania się prawa sąsiedzkiego w Egipcie ptolemejskim i rzymskim (od podboju przez Aleksandra Wielkiego po podbój arabski) w oparciu o źródła praktyki, jakimi są papirusy w kilku językach – przede wszystkim greckim i demotycznym, ale z odwołaniami także do tych napisanych po koptyjsku i arabsku. Wśród nich możemy wyróżnić petycje, akty sądowe, instrukcje oraz raporty urzędników, kilka zbiorów praw i edykty prefektów, a także różnorodne kontrakty – umowy kupna-sprzedaży, najmu czy podziału własności, w których zazwyczaj jedynie niewielkie fragmenty czy poszczególne klauzule zawierały odniesienia do relacji sąsiedzkich. Praca stanowi pierwsze kompleksowe i wyczerpujące opracowanie bogatego, acz rozproszonego i mocno zróżnicowanego materiału papirusowego dotyczącego prawa sąsiedzkiego w Egipcie ptolemejsko-rzymskim. Szeroki zakres chronologiczny i językowy badanego materiału ma na celu wskazanie pochodzenia poszczególnych instytucji prawnych, ich kształtowania się i zmian jakim ulegały one w czasie. Na podstawie przeprowadzonej analizy możliwe było stwierdzenie istnienia wyraźnej kontynuacji pomiędzy okresem ptolemejskim i rzymskim, jeżeli chodzi o charakter prawny instytucji prawa sąsiedzkiego znajdujących wyraz w dokumentach, co wskazuje na ich wcześniejszy niż rzymski rodowód. Wywodziły się one zatem z wcześniej obowiązujących na tym terenie praw – greckich oraz egipskiego i także po podboju rzymskim, pomimo że prawo rzymskie dysponowało rozbudowanym systemem instytucji z zakresu prawa sąsiedzkiego, w papirusach nie widać zasadniczo zmian, które można by uznać za jego wpływy na praktykę prawną w Egipcie. Wypracowane uprzednio i utrwalone instytucje nie były zatem zmieniane przez nowe władze. Spełniały one bowiem dobrze swoje funkcje, odpowiadając lokalnym warunkom, a dodatkowo pod wieloma względami były one podobne do rozwiązań rzymskich. Dokładne i pewne przypisanie poszczególnych zagadnień z zakresu prawa sąsiedzkiego do praw greckich czy egipskiego funkcjonujących na terenie Egiptu nie jest łatwe, ani też zawsze możliwe z powodu niedostatecznego materiału porównawczego. Wydaje się jednak, że przynajmniej pewna część rozwiązań stosowanych w Egipcie w czasach faraońskich i tych znanych prawu greckiemu była analogiczna czy też różniła się jedynie nieznacznie, co pozwalało na ich w miarę bezbolesne współistnienie. Część rozwiązań zdaje się mieć natomiast egipski rodowód, ale niewykluczone, że zagadnienia te były regulowane także przez prawa greckie, które doznały istotnych modyfikacji pod wpływem lokalnych, egipskich uwarunkowań, w ramach których musiały funkcjonować, co jest szczególnie widoczne w przypadku kwestii związanych z irygacją. Warto wskazać, że wiele rozwiązań z zakresu prawa sąsiedzkiego znajdujących odbicie w papirusach właściwych było nie tylko dla tego kraju, ale także dla innych praw antycznych – rzymskiego czy praw Wschodu. Przemawia to za uniwersalnym charakterem dużej części rozwiązań stosowanych w Egipcie, wynikającym z ogólnoludzkiego rodzaju problemów i potrzeb z jakimi musiały się zmierzyć antyczne społeczności dla zapewnienia w miarę pokojowego współżycia oraz jak najszybszego rozwiązywania problemów pomiędzy sąsiadami. Cała praca podzielona jest na wstęp, jedenaście rozdziałów, zakończenie, cztery apendyksy oraz zaopatrzona jest w bibliografię, spis ilustracji oraz indeks źródeł. W kolejnych rozdziałach przeanalizowane są poszczególne problemy i instytucje prawne związane ze stosunkami sąsiedzkimi. Uporządkowane są one według kryterium przedmiotowego, opierającego się na fakcie powiązania danego zagadnienia z sąsiedztwem gruntów lub też budynków. Rozdział pierwszy stanowi wprowadzenie do charakteru źródeł papirusowych i zagadnienia pluralizmu prawnego w Egipcie ptolemejsko-rzymskim istotnego z punktu widzenia prawa sąsiedzkiego. W rozdziale drugim przeanalizowany został spór o granice, stanowiący jeden z podstawowych konfliktów pomiędzy sąsiadami. Rozdział trzeci poświęcony jest szkodom wyrządzanym przez zwierzęta w uprawach. Rozdział czwarty i piąty dotyczą zagadnień związanych z wodą, która w Egipcie rolniczo całkowicie uzależnionym od wylewów Nilu, odgrywała zasadniczą rolę. Rozdział czwarty poświęcony jest sporom dotyczącym zalewania sąsiednich terenów czy też blokowania dopływu do nich wody na skutek działań sąsiadów, a w rozdziale piątym zostało omówione zagadnienie prowadzenia wody przez cudzy teren oraz kwestia współpracy sąsiadów przy utrzymaniu systemu irygacyjnego. Rozdział szósty dotyczy zapewnienia dostępu do nieruchomości, kwestii odnoszącej się w Egipcie nie tylko do gruntów, ale także budynków. Kolejne cztery rozdziały poświęcone są natomiast zagadnieniom związanym z sąsiedztwem budynków. W rozdziale siódmym poddany został analizie problem powstrzymywania prac budowlanych prowadzonych na terenie sąsiednim, a w rozdziale ósmym rozważana jest kwestia zabezpieczania przed szkodami grożącymi z sąsiedniego budynku. Kolejny rozdział (dziewiąty) dotyczy ścian działowych – kwestii ich własności, kosztów utrzymania oraz rozwiązywania sporów, a w dziesiątym analizie poddany został dostęp światła do budynków. Ostatni rozdział poświęcony jest prawu pierwokupu przysługującemu sąsiadom w przypadku sprzedaży nieruchomości. Każdy rozdział rozpoczyna się krótkim wprowadzeniem przybliżającym badane zagadnienie i przedstawiającym charakterystykę źródeł, którymi dysponujemy. Zasadnicza część, zawierająca analizę materiału papirusowego, jest bogato ilustrowana tekstami źródłowymi wraz z ich tłumaczeniami, w celu ukazania problemu na przykładach. W przypadku zagadnień znajdujących wyraz przede wszystkim w petycjach, odtwarzana jest na ich podstawie procedura, a więc zaangażowani urzędnicy, podejmowane przez nich środki oraz żądania i oczekiwania stron i sposoby ich zaspokojenia. W przypadku zagadnień znajdujących odbicie w pierwszej kolejności w kontraktach, odtwarzany jest przede wszystkim charakter prawny instytucji, okoliczności które prowadziły do zawierania stosownych porozumień czy współpracy pomiędzy sąsiadami. Następnie obraz wynikający z analizy papirusów zestawiany jest w poszczególnych rozdziałach z uregulowaniami danego problemu znanymi z innych praw antycznych – egipskiego, greckiego, bliskowschodnich i rzymskiego, co służy ustaleniu rodowodu poszczególnych instytucji z zakresu prawa sąsiedzkiego, ale także ukazaniu podobieństw czy różnic w rozwiązywaniu różnego rodzaju zagadnień pomiędzy różnymi prawami antycznymi. Wnioski z analizy prawnej są konfrontowane w pracy także z pozostałościami archeologicznymi oraz wiedzą, na temat warunków naturalnych panujących w Egipcie. Służy to osadzeniu instytucji prawnych w szerszym kontekście kulturowym i środowiskowym, zbadaniu w jakim zakresie warunki, w których funkcjonuje prawo wpływają na jego kształt oraz zaobserwowaniu odbicia prawa w pozostałościach materialnych. Praca wzbogacona jest o cztery aneksy zawierające wykaz źródeł papirusowych w układzie chronologicznym, dotyczące sporu granicznego, szkód wyrządzanych przez zwierzęta, szkód w systemie irygacyjnym i szkód spowodowanych przez zawalenie się budynku. Dodatkowo zawiera ona bogaty materiał ilustracyjny, na który składają się plany stanowisk i budynków odkrytych podczas prac archeologicznych, schematyczne rekonstrukcje nieruchomości odtwarzane na podstawie papirusów itp., które obrazują zagadnienia prawne analizowane w rozprawie, ułatwiając ich wyjaśnienie.

Abstract:
The significant, cultural heritage, Kladruby's monastery lies n Tachovon in the Western part of the Czech republic. It lies between Pilsen and Tachov, specifically, Thirty kilometres west from Pilsen and five kilometres south from Stříbro. The history of the township and monastery is closely bound. The middle ages brought prosperity and rise to both of them.To this rise of Kladruby contributed it's great place by the Norimberská stezka and the discovery of silver ore nearby. Thanks to this, in 1230, it was raised by Václav I. to township. With this Kladruby gained the rights of a town ( e.g. The right to organize markets,the right to perform Criminal Law and the right to brew) as one of the first seven town in the Czech republic. Because of the wealth from silver mining, a mining settlement Stříbro was establishes, in the late twelfth century. The Benedictine monastery was established, by Vladislav I. of Přemyslid dynasty, in 1115. He himself is buried there as one of few Czech princes, who are not buried in Prague. Between the 12. And 13. Century, the monastery became one of the most important church centres of the whole kingdom. During the tragedy of Jan Nepomucký, the monastery has a major role. Václav IV considered, establishing a bishopric in Kladruby, to circumscribe the power of Prague...

This chapter briefly considers some of Terrence Fisher's less successful projects during the second half of his career, which are not considered wholly accomplished works. It examines films that are outright failures but also not a bad batting average for a director like Fisher. It also mentions The Mummy from 1959, which was Fisher's stylish yet curiously empty remake of the original 1932 Universal film that was directed by Karl Freund. The chapter cites writer Lawrence Alloway, who was impressed by Christopher Lee's makeup as the title character in The Mummy, but also correctly noted that the film concentrated almost solely on the Mummy and excluded all other characters in the film. It discusses how The Mummy is interesting only when the title character is on the screen and how slackens off into production gloss as a substitute for content at other times.

Abstract In many ways the Works of Mr Alexander Pope, published on 3June 1717, dignified, decorated, and expensive, is the boldest as well as the most beautiful of Pope’s books, proclaiming both the poet’s youth and his achievement with a confident flourish. The Works gave Pope the status of a classic author, opened up new opportunities for authorial control and self-definition, and set a pattern of publication that persisted until his death. But in June 1717 Pope had only just passed his twenty-ninth birthday, and in publishing a volume of Works he was engaging in an act of self-promotion that any celebrated 79-year-old contemporary would have blenched at. It is true that his action was not altogether unprecedented. In 1616 Ben Jonson had taken a similar step, publishing The Workes of Beniamin Jonson in folio, with a monumental title page and with his plays presented in the manner of the ‘earliest editions of Plautus, Terence, and Aristophanes’.

Abstract This chapter looks at how gay culture has been featured in theatre plays. It discusses the quality and themes of Terence McNally’s plays, for example Love! Valor! Compassion! (1994) and Kiss of the Spider Woman (1993). Most of his works are either openly or subtly gay. Musicals were becoming very comfortable with gay emancipation by the 1990s. Thus, plays like The Faggot and When Pigs Fly seem to have a strong political leaning but they didn’t contain much in the way of comedy. However, Avenue Q (2003) takes a unique stance with catchy music, clever lyrics, and an extra layer of fun similar to Sesame Street. The chapter also raises the problem of characters being stereotyped and Hollywood homophobia.

It considers the plays featuring gay people written by John Osborne, Shelagh Delaney, Terence Rattigan, Charles Dyer, and Frank Marcus. The Killing of Sister George (1966), The Best Man (1960), and Advise and Consent (1960) are only some of the few American works that featured a full-scale gay relationship. American artists started creating gay theatre from the inside as the gay culture in the industry has been so highly developed despite being legally sub rosa. The chapter expounds on the rise of gay culture in the West End and Broadway by referencing Oscar Wilde, A Patriot For Me (1969), and The Killing of Sister George.

The article examines a fairly rare term of Greek origin, diasyrticus, that is used four times in Servius’ commentary on Sinon’s speech in the second book of Vergil’s Aeneis (Serv. in Aen. 2, 80–193). Although this term does sporadically appear in scholia to other Roman poets, Servius’ use of it four times over a limited stretch of his commentary, as well as the fact that he does not use either diasyrticus or the adverb diasyrtice in any other passage of his commentary, is remarkable. The article seeks to determine the exact meaning of the term diasyrticus, as well as to describe its usage in works of Roman scholars and critics, to trace its origins and estimate at what point the Greek term might have entered the terminological apparatus of Roman literary criticism; finally, a possible source for Servius’ use of diasyrticus is suggested. It is shown that the semantics of the Greek adjective διασυρ- τικóς, which derives from the noun διασύρτης ‘malicious liar, detractor’, combines two aspects, designating the speech of one who seeks to fool his listeners or to slander someone or something before their eyes, but also does this with malicious intent, taking a mean delight in their gullibility. It appears that the term διασυρτικóς began to be used by Roman scholars and critics at the end of the first century BCE (cf. the use of διασυρτικός in Περὶ τρόπων of the Alexandrian grammarian Trypho who, according to the tradition, taught in Rome at that time). Among the occurrences of diasyrticus in Roman scholarship, Aelius Donatus’ use of it in his commentary on Terence is particularly significant. Donatus was also the author of an important commentary on Vergil (now largely lost), and an important source for Servius as he was composing his own commentary. It is therefore highly probable that it was ultimately from Donatus’ work that Servius adopted the term diasyrticus, limiting its application, however, only to Sinon’s speech. Refs 13.
