Abstract:
This dissertation is concerned with the relationship between the trumpet and organ in twentieth-century music for this ensemble and how that relationship effects performance with regard to organ registration and synchronization. The compositions discussed include "The Other Voices of the Trumpet," by Daniel Pinkham (1971); "Jericho: Battle Music," by William Albright (1976); "Three Pictures of Satan," by Jere Hutcheson (1975); and "Okna," by Petr Eben (1980). The theoretical writings of Pierre Boulez, Robert Erickson, and Donald Cogan deal with developing a contemporary concept of texture. This dissertation applies their theory that texture exists in two dimensions: vertical and horizontal. Stratification and blending of timbres comprise the vertical dimension. The succession of textures, governed by tempo, creates the second dimension. Chapter I provides an historical setting for the genre, introduces the theory of Boulez, Erickson, and Cogan, and supplies the programmatic content of the four works chosen for analysis. In Chapter II , the vertical elements of texture in these four works are isolated and examined. Chapter III deals with Pierre Boulez's theory that the succession of textures, governed by tempo, shapes the work. Each work is examined with regard to tempo, either mobile (fluctuating) or fixed. In Chapter IV the analysis is related to performance. Stratified textures, fused ensemble timbres, and their horizontal progression present problems for the ensemble in organ registration and synchronization. There are general guidelines given for registration as well as specific registration problems encountered in stratified textures and fused ensemble timbres. Synchronization, or coordination of events is the second challenge presented by the horizontal progression of textures.

Abstract:
Because of the lack of information concerning the success or failure of Schubert's bilingual edition and concerning the relationship between the English texts and Schubert's settings, most performers take the conservative route of performing both the songs from Lady of the Lake and the rest of Schubert's English song repertoire only with the German translations. Because of the desirability of performing this repertoire in English for English-speaking audiences, this study examines all of the English songs of Schubert to determine whether the original poems can be successfully substituted for the German translations. Editions of the settings that can be effectively performed with the English texts are included in the appendix, in order to make available editions which reflect Schubert's ambition to make his songs easily accessible to non-German-speaking audiences.

Langwith, Mark J. "'A far green country' : an analysis of the presentation of nature in works of early mythopoeic fantasy fiction." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/313.

Full text
Abstract:
This study undertakes an examination of the representation of nature in works of literature that it regards as early British ‘mythopoeic fantasy’. By this term the thesis understands that fantasy fiction which is fundamentally concerned with myth or myth-making. It is the contention of the study that the connection of these works with myth or the idea of myth is integral to their presentation of nature. Specifically, this study identifies a connection between the idea of nature presented in these novels and the thought of the late-Victorian era regarding nature, primitivism, myth and the impulse behind mythopoesis. It is argued that this conceptual background is responsible for the notion of nature as a virtuous force of spiritual redemption in opposition to modernity and in particular to the dominant modern ideological model of scientific materialism. The thesis begins by examining late-Victorian sensibilities regarding myth and nature, before exposing correlative ideas in selected case studies of authors whose work it posits to be primarily mythopoeic in intent. The first of these studies considers the work of Henry Rider Haggard, the second examines Scottish writer David Lindsay, and the third looks at the mythopoeic endeavours of J. R. R. Tolkien, the latter standing alone among the authors considered in these central case studies in producing fiction under a fully developed theory of mythopoesis. The perspective is then widened in the final chapter, allowing consideration of authors such as William Morris and H. G. Wells. The study attempts to demonstrate the prevalence of an identifiable conceptual model of nature in the period it considers to constitute the age of early mythopoeic fantasy fiction, which it conceives to date from the late-Victorian era to the apotheosis of Tolkien’s work.

Abstract:
Jules Massenet's mélodies feature a distinct vocal treatment regarding musical prosody through his eight song cycles, including Poëme d'Avril, Poëme Pastoral, Poëme du Souvenir, Poëme d'Amour, Poëme d'Hiver, Poëme d'un Soir, and Quelques Chansons Mauves, and a collection, Expressions Lyriques. These mélodies show the influence of the trend of salon music and the high-level poetry from the poetic movements of romanticism, Parnassianism, and symbolism. This study deals with Massenet's mélodies relating to the prosody idea, which is conspicuous in his vocal treatment. His melodic styles feature four distinct aspects of vocal treatment including lyrical, recitative or parlando, melodramatic, and déclamation rhythmée, and represent the idea of musical prosody of phonetic, syntactic, and semantic aspects. Massenet's other musical idioms such as harmony, form, and piano treatment, are also closely related to the prosody matter as a semantic aspect, reinforcing the poetic mood and content. In this study, each melodic style related to French versification is examined in detail. The musical analysis regarding the other musical idioms on selected examples presents the semantic feature of prosody idea. The brief review of French versification and opinions regarding the performance are included. Massenet's contribution to the genre of mélodie, with the prose melody and treatment of piano as an equal partner of voice line, is clearly demonstrated. With this contribution, Massenet should be recognized as the most influential composer to the climatic time of French mélodie led by Fauré, and Debussy, and Duparc.

Abstract:
Following his time, j-h rosny a (1856-1940) gives a great importance to science and to documentary method. His prehistoric novels show his deep erudition about prehistory and they tel the human evolution from homininds to the actual man, stressing about some qualities such as force, energy, health, and so on the author longs for rediscovering these qualities in modern humanity arising its conscience of colloectivity and solidarity. The prehistoric novel is a functional text reveraling rosny's dualistic vision, according to which there is a positive pole and a negative one, a good pole and a bad one. This narrative genre is built about a central figure, the hero, having both a narrative and ideological role. Its structure is very simple and similar to other traditional literary genres such as "recit de voyage" and the epic. As a travelling tale, the prehistoric novel presents a lot of spatial descriptions. Really, this narrative genre is not very different from realistic and naturalistic novel. You can find a lot of details and technical language. Rosny uses, at the same time, a realistic and visionary style. For its form and content, rosny's prehistoric novel reflects the literary, artistic, scientific and philosophical tendencies of xix century

Urstad, Tone Dagny Sundt. "The works of Sir Charles Hanbury Williams." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 1988. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/250916.

Full text
Abstract:
What little work has been done in the past on the life of Sir Charles Hanbury Williams has been only marginally concerned with his literary activities. These deserve notice, however, because of the consistent way in which his works were used as political propoganda, and his willingness to change their political contents for reasons of political expediency. In bibliographical notes it is occasionally stated that the oeuvre of Sir Charles Hanbury Williams as presented in the only fairly comprehensive edition of his works, published in 1822, is unreliable. Commentators have very seldom attempted to be more specific than that, however. The aim of this thesis is to separate the incorrect from the correct attributions, and, where external evidence is lacking, to indicate whether certain works can be considered as likely or unlikely attributions on the basis of their political contents. The search for the context within which the works of Sir Charles Hanbury Williams were written has involved the study of how literature was used for political purposes in the years following the fall of Sir Robert Walpole. This thesis is therefore partially concerned with the nature of political parties in the mid-eighteenth century which has engaged the attention of so many modern historians of the period.

Abstract:

This thesis investigates the relationship of the eighteenth-century German born composer, Johann Adolf Hasse, to the oboe. It highlights Hasse’s use of the oboe in ways ranging from veiled in the texture, to “singing” a duet with the singer in an important aria. It presents examples of an important aria from Hasse’s masterwork, Cleofide, which are ornamented by Hasse’s wife, Faustina Bordoni Hasse. These examples are presented with the oboist in mind, providing a means to learn improved ornamentation for the works of Hasse. It also presents an example of Hasse’s use of oboe in duet with mezzo-soprano, in the recording of Piange Quel Fonte from Numa Pompilio. The reader is encouraged to listen to a suggested recording featuring the American mezzo-soprano, Vivica Genaux. It explores the music of J. Hasse as highly relevant to the oboist looking for new repertoire, and worthy of a genuine consideration of proper style.

Full text
Abstract:
Formaldehyde (H2 CO) is dissociated by UV radiation into H2+co. The fragments of this simple tetraatomic molecule separate very quickly, preventing energy transfer between different degrees of freedom. Thus the determination of the fragments internal state allows us to describe the transition state. Due to their asymmetric behavior, the fragments have different distributions. Co has very high rotational and nearly no vibrational excitations while H2 has modest vibrational and high vibrational ones. The H rovibrational 2 for the time being, only be distribution studied in this dissertation, can determined by CARS (Coherent anti-Stokes Raman Scattering). Moreover, the high to study experimentally for orthohydrogen by helium, internal energy of this fragment the first time the rotational (v = 1, 2 and 3, J≤7). Bas allowed us relaxation of Despite the 150 ns delay between photolysis and CARS pulses due to the predissociative mechanism, and despite the helium translational cooling required to increase sensitivity, it can be proved that the distributions measured are unchanged by the relaxation (within experimental uncertainties). A simple calculation of Raman cross sections has also been derived for diatomics molecules

Reid, Matthew M. "Branching fraction measurements of B0(s) -> J/ψK0Sh+h(')- decays." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2014. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/64115/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents the branching fractions measurements of B0(s) -> J/ψK0Sh+h(')− (h(') = K,π) decays, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb−1 of data recorded at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 7TeV collected with the LHCb detector at CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) during 2011. The first observation of the B0s -> J/ψK0SK±π-+ decay is reported, with a significance greater than 10 standard deviations. The B0 -> J/ψK0SK+K− decay is also observed for the first time. The branching fraction of B0 -> J/ψK0Sπ+π− is determined, to significantly better precision than previous measurements, using B0 -> J/ψK0S as a normalisation channel. Branching fractions and upper limits of the other B0(s) -> J/ψK0Sh+h(')− modes are determined relative to that of the B0 -> J/ψK0Sπ+π− decay. The findings of this thesis have been submitted to JHEP as detailed in Ref. [1].

Galand, David. "Poétique de l'élégie moderne, de C.-H. de Millevoye à J. Reda." Thesis, Sorbonne Paris Cité, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015USPCA066/document.

Full text
Abstract:
The elegy was fashionable at the dawn of modernity, during the periods which are known as Pre-Romanticism and Romanticism. But this infatuation with elegy was not without raising deep questioning on its generic dimension. Indeed since the French had appropriated the genre, the elegy can no longer be just defined by a formal criterion which has become disputable. Furthermore, as early as the classical period, two dangers have been subverting the genre: its wide range of themes which is an obstacle to our grasping its quintessence and an evolution at a standstill condemning it to stereotyped perceptions. And from this came the worry to amend the confusion existing around the elegy as well as the urge to revivify its expressive power around the more flexible notion of "elegiac". The modernity of the elegy relies on this problematic heritage and requires a study in historical perspective: the vitality of the elegy at the beginning of the XIXth century allowed itself to provide a new interpretation of its genre that promoted the elegiac as a decisive criterion. Millevoye’s works enables us to date this turning point which paved the way to the romantic elegy linked to the rising notion of "lyricism" and glorified by Lamartine under the auspices of meditation. But while revivifying the elegy on elegiac expressiveness, romantic modernity compelled with the subject having to respond to historical vagaries that were eventually unsettling. Hence a shifting away from elegiac writing during the second half of the XIXth century into intimist withdrawal, parodic splitting or polyphony, all of them being various utterances of a questioning of the elegiac complaint’s subjective source. When the elegy as such resurfaced the literary scene owing to the trauma of the Second World War, it featured a shifting genre to crystallize the doubts, mournings and smiles of a lyricism as uncertain of its own song as the very existence of a subject that haunted its lines more than he inhabited them

Paris 4, 1995. http://www.theses.fr/1994PA040193.

Full text
Abstract:
This work studies the evolution and the development of the musical form of the Lutheran passion, from the responsorial passions of H. Schutz, to the oratorio-passions of J. S. Bach. Through the analysis of several scores, it considers the transformation of the musical language, during the 1650-1750 period, either by the introduction of new elements (instruments, chorals, airs. . . ), or by the apparition of other structures (creation of the passion oratorio in 1704). It observes the evolution of theological (pietism), and literary (religious poetry, librettos) movements, which have directly influenced the passion. It also illustrates the life of this musical form through the study of a corpus of 308 passions composed at this period, and the transcriptions of original scores
