Abstract:
Exposure of adult animals to 48–72 h of 100% O2 breathing is associated with a blunting of hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction (HPV) (Newman et al. J. Appl. Physiol. 54: 1379–1386, 1983). It is unknown whether HPV is also diminished in neonates after hyperoxic exposure and if so to what extent such suppression might interfere with pulmonary gas exchange during hypoxic gas breathing. We tested the possibility that hyperoxia would suppress HPV and interfere with ventilation-perfusion (VA/Q) matching and therefore gas exchange in neonatal piglets. Twelve 2- to 4-wk-old piglets were exposed for an average of 68 h to greater than 90% inspired O2. A control group of eight piglets was exposed to room air for a similar period of time. Immediately after exposure the animals were anesthetized and instrumented. Pulmonary hemodynamics and respiratory and inert gas exchange were assessed while the animals inspired an O2 fraction of 1.0, 0.21, and 0.12. After 20 min of hypoxic gas breathing, pulmonary arterial pressure rose to a lesser degree in the hyperoxia (H)-exposed animals than in the control (C) animals (P less than 0.02). The increase in pulmonary vascular resistance was similarly blunted. Venous admixture of the insoluble inert gas, sulfur hexafluoride, an index of extremely low VA/Q areas, was increased during hypoxic gas breathing compared with room air breathing in the H-preexposed animals (P less than 0.02). Standard deviation of pulmonary blood flow was increased (P less than 0.02), indicating an increase in mismatching of VA/Q during hypoxic breathing in the H-preexposed animals compared with the C animals.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract:
Practitioners in many domains–e.g., clinical psychologists, college instructors, researchers–collect written responses from clients. A well-developed method that has been applied to texts from sources like these is the computer application Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC). LIWC uses the words in texts as cues to a person’s thought processes, emotional states, intentions, and motivations. In the present study, we adopt analytic principles from LIWC and develop and test an alternative method of text analysis using naïve Bayes methods. We further show how output from the naïve Bayes analysis can be used for mark up of student work in order to provide immediate, constructive feedback to students and instructors. References Blei, D. Abstract:
Education belongs among the most important means for the development of human intellectual potential. Whether formal or informal, education has always played an important role both in the life of the individual and in the life of the community. In the paper before us, the author discusses some of the basic principles of educational theory of the English thinker J. H. Newman. The first chapter of the paper discusses man seen as a being of development who needs certain means to help him reach his intellectual excellence. Among these means education holds a primary position. The second chapter brings Newman’s attitude towards the utilitarian concept of university education, and the third chapter deals with the influence of the university on the moral formation of the individual.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to solve the parameter identification problem to estimate the parameters in electrochemical models of the lithium-ion battery. Design/methodology/approach The parameter estimation framework is applied to the Doyle-Fuller-Newman (DFN) model containing a total of 44 parameters. The DFN model is fit to experimental data obtained through the cycling of Li-ion cells. The parameter estimation is performed by minimizing the least-squares difference between the experimentally measured and numerically computed voltage curves. The minimization is performed using a state-of-the-art hybrid minimization algorithm. Findings The DFN model parameter estimation is performed within 14 h, which is a significant improvement over previous works. The mean absolute error for the converged parameters is less than 7 mV. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, application of a hybrid optimization framework is new in the field of electrical modelling of lithium-ion cells. This approach saves much time in parameterization of models with a high number of parameters while achieving a high-quality fit.

Although over 160 years have passed since John Keble’s Assize sermon on National Apostasy, the study of the Oxford Movement continues to absorb the attention of historians. Within the last decade, for example, two major biographies of Newman have appeared, together with a careful examination of the relationship between Tractarianism and the Anglican High Church tradition. In an essay on ‘The Oxford Movement and its reminiscencers’, Owen Chadwick commented concerning the historiography of Tractarianism that ‘too many have made it an industry’: the industry, however, still seems to be productive.

Abstract:
We have recently cloned and characterized a unique sodium bicarbonate cotransporter, NBC3, which unlike other members of the NBC family, is ethylisopropylamiloride (EIPA) inhibitable, DIDS insensitive, and electroneutral (A. Pushkin, N. Abuladze, I. Lee, D. Newman, J. Hwang, and I. Kurtz. J. Biol. Chem.274: 16569–16575, 1999). In the present study, a specific polyclonal antipeptide COOH-terminal antibody, NBC3-C1, was generated and used to determine the pattern of NBC3 protein expression in rabbit kidney. A major band of ∼200 kDa was detected on immunoblots of rabbit kidney. Immunocytochemistry of rabbit kidney frozen sections revealed specific staining of the apical membrane of intercalated cells in both the cortical and outer medullary collecting ducts. The pattern of NBC3 protein expression in the collecting duct was nearly identical to the same sections stained with an antibody against the vacuolar H+-ATPase 31-kDa subunit. In addition, the NBC3-C1 antibody coimmunoprecipitated the vacuolar H+-ATPase 31-kDa subunit. Functional studies in outer medullary collecting ducts (inner stripe) showed that type A intercalated cells have an apical Na+-dependent base transporter that is EIPA inhibitable and DIDS insensitive. The data suggest that NBC3 participates in H+/base transport in the collecting duct. The close association of NBC3 and the vacuolar H+-ATPase in type A intercalated cells suggests a potential structural/functional interaction between the two transporters.

Abstract:
This is a superb book. With penetrating insight and an eloquent style, alDa'miexplores the crucial role that Arabo-lslamic history played in thearguments of such prominent British and American "men of letters" asThomas Carlyle and Washington Irving. The book opens with a preface,in which he lays out his rationale and purpose, and contains seven chapters,in which he develops his argument.AI-Da'mi seeks to deepen our understanding of nineteenth-centuryOriental ism by exploring the works of leading intellectual writers of thattime: not the professional historians, but the "men ofletters" who used historyto expound their arguments, but with a kind of literary licence notavailable to a proper historian. His main argument is that the writers usedArabo-Islamic history not simply as an exotic or a romantic flourish, butrather as an integral and important aspect of their discourses to commentupon their own time. For example, Carlyle praises the Prophet as a heroicleader, as a way to warn the British of the dangers of utilitarianism andmaterialism; Ralph Waldo Emerson likewise does this to send a messageto the young American nation; Cardinal John H. Newman to alert Europeto the Ottoman threat; and so on.Al-Da'mi convincingly points out that we can neither understandthese writers nor the age itself adequately without properly comprehendingthis aspect of their writings. This is an important rectification to traditionalwestern scholarship, which typically leaves out all mention ofanything non-European in its study of its own intellectual history. (WalterE. Houghton's classic work on the Victorian age, The Victorian Frame ofMind, 1830-1870, has in its index only one entry for Prophet Muhammad ...

Abstract:
Background. The article discusses psychology of teenagers and elders in detective novels which is considered to be more complicated. Although the society and the social environment change and renew the way of thinking, the changes in the world of childhood and adolescence, like the laws of nature, are constantly changing. Adolescence is a period that is complicated by the transition of a person to the stage of childhood and maturity. Methods. It is important that every teenager at this age pays more attention to the heroes of books and movies, learns from them. Consequently, the task of fiction for teenagers is also very responsible and multifaceted. Among the works of world literature such as J. Verne's "Children of Captain Grant", "Five Weeks in a Balloon", "Mysterious Island", D. Defoe's "Robinson Crusoe", J. Swift's "Gulliver's Travels", Uzbek children's fiction and detective prose, for example The works of H. Shaykhov, T. Malik, O. Mukhtor, H. Tukhtaboyev, as well as the didactic stories of T. Malik, E. Abstract:
The singular nonsymmetric rank one perturbation of a self-adjoint operator from classes ${\mathcal H}_{-1}$ and ${\mathcal H}_{-2}$ was considered for the first time in works by Dudkin M.E. and Vdovenko T.I. \cite{k8,k9}. In the mentioned papers, some properties of the point spectrum are described, which occur during such perturbations. This paper proposes generalizations of the results presented in \cite{k8,k9} and \cite{k2} in the case of nonsymmetric class ${\mathcal H}_{-2}$ perturbations of finite rank. That is, the formal expression of the following is considered \begin{equation*} \tilde A=A+\sum \limits_{j=1}^{n}\alpha_j\langle\cdot,\omega_j\rangle\delta_j, \end{equation*} where $A$ is an unperturbed self-adjoint operator on a separable Hilbert space ${\mathcal H}$, $\alpha_j\in{\mathbb C}$, $\omega_j$, $\delta_j$, $j=1,2, ..., n<\infty$ are vectors from the negative space ${\mathcal H}_{-2}$ constructed by the operator $A$, $\langle\cdot,\cdot\rangle$ is the dual scalar product between positive and negative spaces.

Abstract:
It is a truism to state today that the idealist-realist debate represents a foundational moment of great importance for the discipline of international relations that had defined and set the problematic that will occupy her latter. In those circumstances, the works of Hans f. Morgenthau occupied a privileged posture because he contributed more than anyone else to grasp what makes the originality and specificity of that « new » domain of study. The metatheoretical examination of that idealist-realist debate and of the strategic position that it occupied in the theoretical thinking of Morgenthau allowed us to enlighten anew one crucial moment in the analytical constitution of international relations. Retrospectively this kind of metatheoretical examination throws critical light on difficulties faced by theoretical activities in that discipline.

Abstract Wakefield, C. B., Newman, S. J., Marriott, R. J., Boddington, D. K., and Fairclough, D. V. 2013. Contrasting life history characteristics of the eightbar grouper, Hyporthodus octofasciatus (Pisces: Epinephelidae), over a large latitudinal range reveals spawning omission at higher latitudes. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 70: 485–497. Demographic data on deep-water groupers are limited despite them being highly exploited throughout the Indo-Pacific. In Western Australia, the continuous distribution of the eightbar grouper, Hyporthodus octofasciatus, spans tropical to temperate waters over ∼3500 km from 12°S–35°S. The maximum age was markedly higher in the northern tropical waters than in southern temperate waters, i.e. 47 vs 20 years. Females attained a significantly larger length-at-age in southern temperate waters. Macroscopic and microscopic examination of gonads and annual trends in mean monthly gonadosomatic indices (GSIs) were used to determine that this monandric protogynous hermaphrodite spawns from late spring to summer (October–February) in northwestern Australia. In the temperate waters of WA, there was no evidence of reproduction and no males were observed south of ∼30°S latitude. The lengths at which 50% of female H. octofasciatus matured and changed sex were estimated from northern tropical populations at 560 mm (6.1 years) and 1022 mm (≥11 years). Although the population connectivity of H. octofasciatus is unknown, the spawning omission in temperate waters suggests recruitment from the northern tropical areas and highlights the importance of preserving spawning stocks in those northern waters.

Abstract:
Purpose There is a growing concern of the non-balance of the final output of construction works in comparison the financial resources invested with during the course of construction projects. One propelling factor to this is the opportunistic disposition often sought out by construction contractors. This study aims to investigate the relationship between construction contractors’ opportunism and construction project transaction costs from the viewpoint of construction professionals. Design/methodology/approach Questionnaire survey was deployed in eliciting responses from construction professionals. A total of 337 questionnaires were distributed and 264 were retrieved and deemed fit for analysis. Methods of data analysis used for the study are Mean Item Score, Kruskal–Wallis H-test, Student Newman Kauls Post Hoc Test, Factor Analysis, Spearman Rank Correlation and Regression Analysis. Findings The study showed that the most-ranked factor influencing contractors’ opportunism that affects transaction cost is “Unclear scope of work”. Revealed from the study is the differing view of construction professionals of the effect of contractors’ opportunism on transaction costs. Equally revealed through Spearman correlation analysis is the potent effect that contractors’ opportunism has on transaction costs. Likewise, the study established that there is a discovered difference among construction professionals’ perceived effect of contractors’ opportunism on construction transaction costs. Originality/value The study establishes the nexus between construction contractors’ opportunistic disposition and construction transaction costs, which are shown to be highly correlated. The study went further to recommend that efforts should be made to ensure that issues like contract documentation should be well and appropriately carried out; roles and responsibilities of stakeholders should be well defined so as to fully keep all parties to a contract abreast with the expectations of their duties in relation to the project objectives.

Abstract:
Fibulin is a broadly conserved component of the extracellular matrix (ECM). Previous studies have shown that Caenorhabditis elegans FIBULIN-1 (FBL-1) controls the width of the gonad (Hesselson, D., C. Newman, K.W. Kim, and J. Kimble. 2004. Curr. Biol. 14:2005–2010; Kubota, Y., R. Kuroki, and K. Nishiwaki. 2004. Curr. Biol. 14:2011–2018; Muriel, J.M., C. Dong, H. Hutter, and B.E. Vogel. 2005. Development. 132: 4223–4234). In this study, we report that FBL-1 also controls developmental growth and that one isoform of fibulin-1, called FBL-1C, controls both functions by distinct mechanisms. A large FBL-1C fragment, including both epidermal growth factor (EGF) and fibulin-type C domains, is responsible for constraining gonadal width, but a much smaller fragment containing only two complete EGF repeats (EGF1-2C+) is critical for developmental growth. We suggest that the larger fragment serves a scaffolding function to stabilize the basement membrane and that the smaller fragment provides a regulatory function at the cell surface or within the ECM to control growth.

Abstract:
Recently, Chang and Li generalized the theory of virtual fundamental class to the setting of semi-perfect obstruction theory. A semi-perfect obstruction theory requires only the local existence of a perfect obstruction theory with compatibility conditions. In this paper, we generalize the torus localization of Graber–Pandharipande [T. Graber and R. Pandharipande, Localization of virtual cycles, Invent. Math. 135(2) (1999) 487–518], the cosection localization [Y.-H. Kiem and J. Li, Localizing virtual cycles by cosections, J. Amer. Math. Soc. 26(4) (2013) 1025–1050] and their combination [H.-L. Chang, Y.-H. Kiem and J. Li, Torus localization and wall crossing for cosection localized virtual cycles, Adv. Math. 308 (2017) 964–986], to the setting of semi-perfect obstruction theory. As an application, we show that the Jiang-Thomas theory [Y. Jiang and R. Thomas, Virtual signed Euler characteristics, preprint (2014), arXiv:1408.2541] of virtual signed Euler characteristic works without the technical quasi-smoothness assumption from derived algebraic geometry.

Abstract:
In the 19th century, after a two-centuries oblivion, the interest in a medieval genre “danse macabre” reappeared. Dances of Death were embodied not only in pictorial art, literature and music, but also attracted the attention of scholars. The research subject of this article is one of such scientific works - “Les Danses des Morts” by J.-G. Kastner. Its uniqueness consists in the combination of a theoretical research and practical embodiment of its results in a piece of music. The genre of the tractate is defined by scholars as “livre partition” - a sheet music book. The article contains the biographical data of the life and creative work of the French scholar, music expert and composer, little-known in Russian musicology. Based on their own translation of the original text, the authors study the structure-content components of the tractate and define its specificity. J.-G. Kastner considers the genre “danse macabre” in the historical, philosophical and aesthetic contexts; traces back the interdependence of literary, decorative, and musical versions of the dances. The tractate of the French musicologist considers in detail the range of instruments of dance macabre (based on the collection of wooden engravings of a gothic Doten Dantz printed in the late 15th century). The authors define the features of J.-G. Kastner’s ideas which differ them from the thanatological views of his predecessors H. Peino and E.-H. Langlois.

Abstract:
The works, views and ideas of Heini Hediger (1908-1992), one of the most distinguished and influential zoologist of the 20th century, had and still have an enormous impact on contemporary understanding of animal behaviour. His views on territorial, social, etc. aspects of animal behaviour are based on semiotic concepts derived from Umwelt-theory (J. v. Uexküll) and combined with ideas from modern ethology. Hediger's special attention was devoted to the area of animal-man communications; he treated these problematic phenomena as a system of semiosis-processes, in a mainly holistic way. Hediger's approach inspires the author to propose a notion "the need for impression" to be used in zoosemiotic analyses.

Abstract:
Supramolecular approaches are of great interest in the design of functional materials. The types of aggregates arising from different noncovalent interactions endow materials with intriguing properties. In this sense, J-type aggregates are very attractive due to their unique optical properties and capacity to transport excitons. These features make them great candidates in the design of materials for organic electronic devices. Furthermore, the incorporation of additional hydrogen-bonding functionalities provides J-aggregates with superior directionality and connection among the different π-conjugated cores. The control over the formation of H-bonds to achieve functional aggregates is therefore a promising strategy towards controlled structures with specific functions. This review outlines the most relevant and recent works of π-conjugated systems exhibiting J-type aggregates resulting from hydrogen-bonding interactions. Different types of hydrogen-bonding functionalities will be discussed together with their roles in the aggregate properties, their impact in the optoelectronic properties, the self-assembly mechanisms, and their applications in organic electronics.

Abstract:
The subject of this research is representation of the images of Ob Ugrians in ethnographic illustrated publications of the late XVIII – early XIX centuries. The author examines the works of H. Rotht, J. B. Le Prince, H. G. Geissler as the visual and historical-ethnographic sources. The article touches upon the general historical, artistic and intellectual contexts of the second half of the XVIII – early XIX centuries, reflecting the dominant representations of the contemporaries on life and culture of Ob Ugrians. The approach proposed by Y. Slezkin that allows viewing the Ob Ugrians “with the eyes of Russians” is favored by the author. In analyzing the visual form of works, the author leant on the iconological method. The novelty of this research is defined by the relevance of studying visual representation of Ob Ugrians in the illustrated publications of the late XVIII – early XIX centuries based on the example of gravures by Roth, Le Prince, and Geissler. This topic is yet insufficiently studied from the perspective of existence of the corresponding historical-ethnographic research, as well as analysis of the artistic for of the works. The task for reconstruction of representations of the artists themselves on life and culture of Ob Ugrians is also relevant. These views were formed within the framework of particular theoretical models, concepts, historical-ethnographic ideas of that time, and were a reflection of the dominant aesthetic canons and artistic conventions, which ultimately outlined the general “portrait” of Ob Ugrians.

Abstract:
Different heat transfer enhancers are reviewed. They are (a) fins and microfins, (b) porous media, (c) large particles suspensions, (d) nanofluids, (e) phase-change devices, (f) flexible seals, (g) flexible complex seals, (h) vortex generators, (i) protrusions, and (j) ultra high thermal conductivity composite materials. Most of heat transfer augmentation methods presented in the literature that assists fins and microfins in enhancing heat transfer are reviewed. Among these are using joint-fins, fin roots, fin networks, biconvections, permeable fins, porous fins, capsulated liquid metal fins, and helical microfins. It is found that not much agreement exists between works of the different authors regarding single phase heat transfer augmented with microfins. However, too many works having sufficient agreements have been done in the case of two phase heat transfer augmented with microfins. With respect to nanofluids, there are still many conflicts among the published works about both heat transfer enhancement levels and the corresponding mechanisms of augmentations. The reasons beyond these conflicts are reviewed. In addition, this paper describes flow and heat transfer in porous media as a well-modeled passive enhancement method. It is found that there are very few works which dealt with heat transfer enhancements using systems supported with flexible/flexible-complex seals. Eventually, many recent works related to passive augmentations of heat transfer using vortex generators, protrusions, and ultra high thermal conductivity composite material are reviewed. Finally, theoretical enhancement factors along with many heat transfer correlations are presented in this paper for each enhancer.
