Abstract:
James Henderson ‘Jimmy’ Burns was the founding editor of The Collected Works of Jeremy Bentham (1968–) and an outstanding historian of medieval and modern political thought. In this brief tribute I hope to emphasize, first, his contribution to the revival of interest in utilitarianism as a field of study, and, second, his reassessment of Bentham's ideas in the context of the British and French Enlightenment.

Abstract:
The singular nonsymmetric rank one perturbation of a self-adjoint operator from classes ${\mathcal H}_{-1}$ and ${\mathcal H}_{-2}$ was considered for the first time in works by Dudkin M.E. and Vdovenko T.I. \cite{k8,k9}. In the mentioned papers, some properties of the point spectrum are described, which occur during such perturbations. This paper proposes generalizations of the results presented in \cite{k8,k9} and \cite{k2} in the case of nonsymmetric class ${\mathcal H}_{-2}$ perturbations of finite rank. That is, the formal expression of the following is considered \begin{equation*} \tilde A=A+\sum \limits_{j=1}^{n}\alpha_j\langle\cdot,\omega_j\rangle\delta_j, \end{equation*} where $A$ is an unperturbed self-adjoint operator on a separable Hilbert space ${\mathcal H}$, $\alpha_j\in{\mathbb C}$, $\omega_j$, $\delta_j$, $j=1,2, ..., n<\infty$ are vectors from the negative space ${\mathcal H}_{-2}$ constructed by the operator $A$, $\langle\cdot,\cdot\rangle$ is the dual scalar product between positive and negative spaces.

Abstract:
Background. The article discusses psychology of teenagers and elders in detective novels which is considered to be more complicated. Although the society and the social environment change and renew the way of thinking, the changes in the world of childhood and adolescence, like the laws of nature, are constantly changing. Adolescence is a period that is complicated by the transition of a person to the stage of childhood and maturity. Methods. It is important that every teenager at this age pays more attention to the heroes of books and movies, learns from them. Consequently, the task of fiction for teenagers is also very responsible and multifaceted. Among the works of world literature such as J. Verne's "Children of Captain Grant", "Five Weeks in a Balloon", "Mysterious Island", D. Defoe's "Robinson Crusoe", J. Swift's "Gulliver's Travels", Uzbek children's fiction and detective prose, for example The works of H. Shaykhov, T. Malik, O. Mukhtor, H. Tukhtaboyev, as well as the didactic stories of T. Malik, E. Malik play an important role in enriching the spiritual needs of adolescents in this area. Results.

Abstract:
Recently, Chang and Li generalized the theory of virtual fundamental class to the setting of semi-perfect obstruction theory. A semi-perfect obstruction theory requires only the local existence of a perfect obstruction theory with compatibility conditions. In this paper, we generalize the torus localization of Graber–Pandharipande [T. Graber and R. Pandharipande, Localization of virtual cycles, Invent. Math. 135(2) (1999) 487–518], the cosection localization [Y.-H. Kiem and J. Li, Localizing virtual cycles by cosections, J. Amer. Math. Soc. 26(4) (2013) 1025–1050] and their combination [H.-L. Chang, Y.-H. Kiem and J. Li, Torus localization and wall crossing for cosection localized virtual cycles, Adv. Math. 308 (2017) 964–986], to the setting of semi-perfect obstruction theory. As an application, we show that the Jiang-Thomas theory [Y. Jiang and R. Thomas, Virtual signed Euler characteristics, preprint (2014), arXiv:1408.2541] of virtual signed Euler characteristic works without the technical quasi-smoothness assumption from derived algebraic geometry.

Abstract:
This dissertation is concerned with the relationship between the trumpet and organ in twentieth-century music for this ensemble and how that relationship effects performance with regard to organ registration and synchronization. The compositions discussed include "The Other Voices of the Trumpet," by Daniel Pinkham (1971); "Jericho: Battle Music," by William Albright (1976); "Three Pictures of Satan," by Jere Hutcheson (1975); and "Okna," by Petr Eben (1980). The theoretical writings of Pierre Boulez, Robert Erickson, and Donald Cogan deal with developing a contemporary concept of texture. This dissertation applies their theory that texture exists in two dimensions: vertical and horizontal. Stratification and blending of timbres comprise the vertical dimension. The succession of textures, governed by tempo, creates the second dimension. Chapter I provides an historical setting for the genre, introduces the theory of Boulez, Erickson, and Cogan, and supplies the programmatic content of the four works chosen for analysis. In Chapter II , the vertical elements of texture in these four works are isolated and examined. Chapter III deals with Pierre Boulez's theory that the succession of textures, governed by tempo, shapes the work. Each work is examined with regard to tempo, either mobile (fluctuating) or fixed. In Chapter IV the analysis is related to performance. Stratified textures, fused ensemble timbres, and their horizontal progression present problems for the ensemble in organ registration and synchronization. There are general guidelines given for registration as well as specific registration problems encountered in stratified textures and fused ensemble timbres. Synchronization, or coordination of events is the second challenge presented by the horizontal progression of textures.

Abstract:
Because of the lack of information concerning the success or failure of Schubert's bilingual edition and concerning the relationship between the English texts and Schubert's settings, most performers take the conservative route of performing both the songs from Lady of the Lake and the rest of Schubert's English song repertoire only with the German translations. Because of the desirability of performing this repertoire in English for English-speaking audiences, this study examines all of the English songs of Schubert to determine whether the original poems can be successfully substituted for the German translations. Editions of the settings that can be effectively performed with the English texts are included in the appendix, in order to make available editions which reflect Schubert's ambition to make his songs easily accessible to non-German-speaking audiences.

Langwith, Mark J. "'A far green country' : an analysis of the presentation of nature in works of early mythopoeic fantasy fiction." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/313.

Full text
Abstract:
This study undertakes an examination of the representation of nature in works of literature that it regards as early British ‘mythopoeic fantasy’. By this term the thesis understands that fantasy fiction which is fundamentally concerned with myth or myth-making. It is the contention of the study that the connection of these works with myth or the idea of myth is integral to their presentation of nature. Specifically, this study identifies a connection between the idea of nature presented in these novels and the thought of the late-Victorian era regarding nature, primitivism, myth and the impulse behind mythopoesis. It is argued that this conceptual background is responsible for the notion of nature as a virtuous force of spiritual redemption in opposition to modernity and in particular to the dominant modern ideological model of scientific materialism. The thesis begins by examining late-Victorian sensibilities regarding myth and nature, before exposing correlative ideas in selected case studies of authors whose work it posits to be primarily mythopoeic in intent. The first of these studies considers the work of Henry Rider Haggard, the second examines Scottish writer David Lindsay, and the third looks at the mythopoeic endeavours of J. R. R. Tolkien, the latter standing alone among the authors considered in these central case studies in producing fiction under a fully developed theory of mythopoesis. The perspective is then widened in the final chapter, allowing consideration of authors such as William Morris and H. G. Wells. The study attempts to demonstrate the prevalence of an identifiable conceptual model of nature in the period it considers to constitute the age of early mythopoeic fantasy fiction, which it conceives to date from the late-Victorian era to the apotheosis of Tolkien’s work.

Abstract:
Jules Massenet's mélodies feature a distinct vocal treatment regarding musical prosody through his eight song cycles, including Poëme d'Avril, Poëme Pastoral, Poëme du Souvenir, Poëme d'Amour, Poëme d'Hiver, Poëme d'un Soir, and Quelques Chansons Mauves, and a collection, Expressions Lyriques. These mélodies show the influence of the trend of salon music and the high-level poetry from the poetic movements of romanticism, Parnassianism, and symbolism. This study deals with Massenet's mélodies relating to the prosody idea, which is conspicuous in his vocal treatment. His melodic styles feature four distinct aspects of vocal treatment including lyrical, recitative or parlando, melodramatic, and déclamation rhythmée, and represent the idea of musical prosody of phonetic, syntactic, and semantic aspects. Massenet's other musical idioms such as harmony, form, and piano treatment, are also closely related to the prosody matter as a semantic aspect, reinforcing the poetic mood and content. In this study, each melodic style related to French versification is examined in detail. The musical analysis regarding the other musical idioms on selected examples presents the semantic feature of prosody idea. The brief review of French versification and opinions regarding the performance are included. Massenet's contribution to the genre of mélodie, with the prose melody and treatment of piano as an equal partner of voice line, is clearly demonstrated. With this contribution, Massenet should be recognized as the most influential composer to the climatic time of French mélodie led by Fauré, and Debussy, and Duparc.

Čapek’s drama R. U. R., which is rather a social dystopia than a science fi ction (the principle of functioning of robots is not suggested, the drama is focused on the impact on humanity), shows the double face of technology: Th e dream about the “liberation of work” easily takes a turn for its opposite, and for destruction of humanity in consequence of ruthless utilization of the technological achievement for selfi sh economical and militaristic interests. „Autonomous technology“, which is not controlled by human aims any more, but by the rules of its own development, became an important subject of philosophy and ethics of technology (e.g. in works by J. Ellul, H. Jonas), and has a warning eff ect. Today, Industry 4.0 and the process of robotization bring new promises, but also new problems. Th e legacy of Karel Čapek includes values of humanism and understanding for other people’s views and needs, which is valuable for developing ethics of technology in democratic society.

In this work it is reviewed the variational approach for some Transport Problems. Let X be a convex domain in Rn, and V a compact set. For that, it is considered the following equation: ∂ψ∂t(x,v,t)+v·∇ψ(x,v,t)+h(x,μ)ψ(x,v,t)==∫Vk(x,v,v′)ψ(x,v′,t)dv′+q(x,v,t)(1) where x represents the spatial variable in a domain D, v an element of a compact set V, Ψ is the angular flux, h(x,v) the collision frequency, k(x,v,v’) the scattering kernel function and q(x,v) the source function. It is put the attention in the construction of the quadratic functional J which appears in variational approaches for transport theory (for example, the Vladimirov functional). Some properties of this functional in a proper functional framework, in order to determine the minimum for J are considered. First, the general formulation is studied. Then an algorithm is given for minimizing the functional J for two remarkable problems: spherical harmonic method and spectral collocation method. A program associated to this algorithm is worked in a computer algebraic system, and also was depeloped a version in a high level language.

Abstract:
The objective of this work is to investigate the effects of the concentration of hydrogen atoms at the tungsten Σ5 (310) grain boundary (GB) on the GB energy and the GB pulling force. Tungsten (W) is the most preferred plasma facing material (PFM) for the future nuclear fusion reactors such as in the proposed DEMO (demonstration power plant) and ITER (international thermonuclear experimental reactor — which is at the moment the largest Tokamak nuclear fusion reactor under construction in the world. Tungsten is considered as a PFM because of its excellent thermal properties, low-sputtering yield and high melting point. However, hydrogen (H) atoms have an affinity for tungsten grain boundary, and are trapped there permanently. In addition, it makes it prone to failure. W will be exposed to extremely high fluences of H isotopes. The low-energy H isotopes will be retained in the tungsten material leading to the formation of blisters in W and causes degradation of the mechanical and thermal properties of W. Therefore for safety reason, the effect of hydrogen atoms at the tungsten Σ5 (310) symmetric tilt-GB needs to be investigated. This will greatly aid in better designing of fusion wall materials. In addition, the full understanding of the tungsten grain boundary energy and the force required to pull the grain boundary apart will also help in better material selection. Classic molecular dynamics method was used for the investigation. LAMMPS-a sophisticated, classical atomic and molecular dynamics modelling and simulation software, is a vital tool adopted for the investigation of the effects of hydrogen atoms in tungsten Σ5 (310) symmetric tilt-GB. Tersoff potential for W-H interactions was used for the modelling. The size of the simulation box is 10 × 100 × 10 lattices and it consists of 21262 W atoms. Periodic boundaries were used for all sides of the system. Conjugate gradient method was used for the minimization. The trajectories of the atoms were visualized using visual molecular dynamics (VMD) software. The GB energies are calculated to be −924.060 J/m2, −923.898 J/m2 and −743.414 J/m2 for pure W, W with one H atom and W with 30 H atoms are at the GB respectively. In addition, the forces required to separate the GB apart are 0.0279551eV/Ang for pure W, 0.024789eV/Ang and 0.0185eV/Ang for W with one H and 30 H atoms at the GB respectively. The result shows that hydrogen acts as a grain boundary embrittler and weakens the GB strength. The GB energy reduces as the concentration of hydrogen at the tungsten GB increases. In addition, the more the hydrogen atoms at the tungsten GB the lesser the value of the force required to pull the GB apart. However, the GB energies and pulling forces starts increasing slowly when H atoms exceed a certain number depending on the H atoms distribution around the W GB.

Abstract:
Abstract Laser Additive Manufacturing using Powder Bed Fusion (LAM-PBF) is one of the revolutionary technologies playing a key role in fourth industrial revolution for redefining manufacturing from mass production to mass customization. To upkeep the pace, Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology (RRCAT) has indigenously developed an LAM-PBF system and it is being used for process and component development for various engineering applications. This paper reports a parametric investigation to evaluate the influence of process parameters on the sample properties and to develop the process window for fabricating complex shaped engineering components. In the present work, an experimental investigation is carried out to investigate the effect of Laser Energy density (LED) on the porosity, microstructure and mechanical properties of SS 316L bulk structures fabricated by LAM-PBF system. LED is a combined parameter simultaneously considering the effect of Laser Power (P), Scan Speed (v), hatch spacing (h) and layer thickness (t). The effect of three LED values such as 83.33 J/mm3, 253.97 J/mm3 and 476.19 J/mm3 is investigated in the present work by building cuboidal samples at a layer thickness of 75 microns. Porosity is estimated using area fraction method in optical microscopy and it is found that the minimum porosity of 0.14 % and pore area of 1.28 mm2 are observed at 253.97 J/mm3. Maximum porosity of 18.85 % is observed at 83 J/mm3 due to incomplete fusion defects. However, porosity observed at 475 J/mm3 is 6.56 % with average pore size of 17.8 mm2. Microstructural studies show primarily columnar growth in all the samples with fine dendrites. The dendrite size is observed to be 3.2 μm, 2.4 μm and 1.46 μm at 83.33 J/mm3, 253.97 J/mm3 and 476.19 J/mm3 respectively. Micro-hardness and single cycle automatic ball indentation studies are found to be in agreement with dendritic size, with lower hardness at larger dendrite size. X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) studies indicate similar peaks at all the conditions, with slight peak shift observed with increase in LED primarily due to higher amount of residual stress. Thus, it can be inferred that LED of 253.97 J/mm3 is suitable for fabricating engineering components due to combination of lower porosity and fine dendritic structure.

Abstract:
Under certain conditions, pipelines may be submitted to biaxial loading situations. In these cases, questions arise about how biaxial loading influence the driving force (i.e.: CTOD, J-integral) of possible presented cracks and how affects the material fracture toughness. For further understanding of biaxial loading effects on fracture mechanics behavior of cracked pipelines, this work presents a numerical analysis of crack-tip constraint of circumferentially surface cracked pipes and SENT specimens using full 3D nonlinear computations. The objective is to examine combined loading effects on the correlation of fracture behavior for the analyzed cracked configurations. The constraint study using the J-Q methodology and the h parameter gives information about the fracture specimen that best represents the crack-tip conditions on circumferentially flawed pipes under combined loads. Additionally, simulations of ductile tearing in a surface cracked plate under biaxial loading using the computational cell methodology demonstrate the negligible effect of biaxial loadings on resistance curves.

Single edge cracked under tension (SENT) specimens appear as an alternative to conventional fracture specimens to characterize fracture toughness of circumferentially cracked pipes. The similarities of stress and strains fields between SENT specimens and cracked pipes are now well known. However, these similarities are not so well established for the case of circumferentially cracked pipes under combined loading conditions (i.e. internal pressure plus bending). Between territories: Incremental changes to the domestic spatial interface between private and public domains. Agnieszka Wir-Konas¹, Kyung Wook Seo¹ ¹Department of Architecture and Built Environment, Northumbria University, Newcastle upon Tyne. Newcastle City Campus, 2 Ellison Pl, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 8ST. E-mail: agnieszka.wir-konas@northumbria.ac.uk, kyung.seo@northumbria.ac.uk Keywords (3-5): building-street interface, incremental change, micro-morphology, private-public boundary, territory Conference topics and scale: Urban form and social use of space In this paper we investigate incremental changes to the relationship between private and public territory on the micro-morphological scale of the residential building-street interface. The building-street interface lies on the edge between two distinctively different spatial domains, the house and the street, and provides a buffer which may be adjusted to aid the transition from private to public territory. The structure of the space impacts both domains: it provides a fit transition from the private dwelling to the public territory, creates a space for probabilistic encounters between inhabitants and strangers, and maintains the liveability of the public street. The aim of this paper is threefold: Firstly, we recognise morphological differences in the structure of the interfaces and the way the transition from private to public territory was envisioned and designed in different societal periods. Secondly, we study incremental changes to the interface, representing individual adjustments to the private-public boundary, in order to recognize common types of adaptations to the existing structure of the interface. The history of changes to each individual building and building-street interface was traced by analysing planning applications and enforcements publicly provided by the city council. Lastly, we compare the capacity of each building-street interface to accommodate incremental change to the public-private transition. We argue that studying the incremental change of the interface and the capacity of each interface to accommodate micro-scale transformations aids in the understanding of the complex social relationship between an individual and a collective in the urban environment. Abstract:
The present work attempts to investigate some aspects of the fracture behavior of cracked pipe bends under the action of in-plane bending moments, with and without internal pressure. The results of the elastic-plastic FE analysis of the defect free elbow under the action of in-plane opening and closing bending moments are presented with the emphasis on the hoop and axial stress distribution at various salient locations in the elbow. A severity matrix is outlined subsequently, correlating the various possible cracked configurations and the loading patterns. Parametric studies on the cracked elbows are carried out, in which the parameters, such as ratio of crack depth to elbow thickness (a/t), angle of the part-through wall crack, bend factor ‘h’ and the internal pressure ‘P’ are varied. The variations of the J-integral versus load and load versus load line displacement are presented. The crack initiation load is determined from the material specific critical value of the J-integral. A non-dimensional parameter is suggested as ratio of plastic collapse load to the crack initiation load, which increases with the increase in the internal pressure both in case of the throughwall flawed elbow as well as in the part-throughwall flawed elbow.
