Jin, Ya-shyuan. "Is working memory working in consecutive interpreting?" Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/4451.

Full text
Abstract:
It is generally agreed that language interpreting is cognitively demanding; how- ever, to date there is little evidence to indicate how working memory is involved in the task, perhaps due to methodological limitations. Based on a full considera- tion of key components of interpreting, two series of experiments were conducted to explore how working memory might play a role in discourse and sentence inter- preting. If working memory is implicated both in grammatical encoding into the target language, and in temporary storage of the discourse content, then higher demand in one function might compromise the other. Thus discourses that di er in word orders between languages could increase the processing load and leave less resource for memory maintenance, a ecting recall performance. In Experiment 1, Chinese-English bilingual participants' memory performance was compared when they translated passages from Chinese to English and from English to Chinese, where the expected word order was either congruent or incongruent between source and target. Recall was not sensitive to word order or direction of translation. Per- haps surprisingly, memory for incongruent discourses was numerically better than that for congruent sentences. Experiment 2 showed that interpreting trainees per- formed just like the participants in Experiment 1 did, suggesting that memory performance was not modulated by translation direction in pro cient translators. Experiment 3 explored the relationship between surface form transformation and recall. As discourse paraphrasing did not result in better recall than verbatim recall, it was concluded that the better memory performance for incongruent discourse in- terpreting suggested by Experiment 1 was not the result of active manipulation of word form or word order in interpreting. Finally, a free recall task among native English speakers showed that the incongruent discourses tested in earlier experi- ments were intrinsically more memorable than congruent discourses (Experiment 4). Despite this confound, this series of experiments highlighted the importance of comprehension in interpreting, but it did not rule out the role of working memory in the task. The role of working memory in interpreting was further explored using on-line measures in Experiments 5-8. Experiment 5 replicated a self-paced reading study by Ruiz, Paredes, Macizo, and Bajo (2008), comparing participants’ times to read sentences for translation to those to read them normally. The data showed that participants accessed lexical and syntactic properties of a target language in the reading-for-translation condition when resources were available to them. In order to explore the role of working memory in sentence interpreting, a dual-task paradigm was used in Experiment 6. When participants' working memory was occupied by a secondary task (digit preload), reading times were only different numerically between congruent and incongruent sentences. Crucially, reading times decreased as digit preload increased. Since there were no differences in the interpretations produced or in digit recall, it appears that participants were flexible in their resource allocation, suggesting that processing can be tuned up to optimise performance for concurrent tasks. Experiment 7 refined the procedure in the order of responses for the dual tasks but replicated the results of Experiment 6. A closer examination of participants’ interpretation responses showed that devices that could reduce processing load in target language production may have been strategically employed. Finally, another set of sentences were used in Experiment 8 in an attempt to replicate Experiment 5. A failure to replicate the earlier findings suggested that working memory demand might differ for different syntactic structures in sentence interpreting. All in all, this thesis shows that research in language interpreting benefits by taking a full account of the key components of interpreting. The use of on-line measures allowed us to take a ne-grained approach to the investigation of interpretation processes. It is proposed in this thesis that interpreting research may gain more insight from the data by incorporating some of the theories and methods typically used in research into language production.

Abstract:
By altering the outward appearance of the gallery walls, I address the hidden inner temperaments and characteristics of these seemingly benign facades. Architectural rubble impacts with the gallery space in imagined collisions, exposing and distorting its hidden inner workings and structures. Sometimes my walls grow so fat that they need immediate and temporary structural solutions. They may even slump over in a pathetic heap under their own perceived mass.Using everyday wall building materials like 2x4s and drywall, or even harvesting the material directly from the gallery, I anthropomorphize the surface of the space. Rather than the architecture receding into the background in the service of art, the gallery walls break free of the architecture and become the art

Ackerman, Steven Everett. "Working Week." OpenSIUC, 2010. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/theses/234.

Full text
Abstract:
Working Week began as a need to explore the history of comic books, specifically the superhero genre, but soon transformed into the journey through a child's imagination and its fragile state. The play attempts to connect the creation of a new world and its eventual destruction at the hand of the Comic Book Code Authority and its stringent laws against risqué subject matter, while incorporating the industry's major genres using a language-based form of playwriting. At its most simplistic, it is the story of a child and his imagination fighting for survival against a traditional, formal establishment. The difficulty lies in making a seamless transition in and out of the child's imaginary state as well as presenting an entertaining story fully realized on stage. This thesis follows Working Week from its origin, through the rehearsal process, to its production at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in the fall of 2009. The introduction is an accompanying essay, written before the production began, discussing personal theatrical ideals. The first part of the thesis, Concepts and Intentions, delves into the inception and the accompanying research. The second part, The Production Process, details the rehearsal process and re-writes. Finally, the third, Reactions, Self Evaluation, and Revision, contains postproduction discussions from the general audience, ACTF respondents, and committee members. In addition, I have included a copy of the production draft of Working Week.

Liu, Xin. "Working longer, working healthier : how can China age more actively?" Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2018. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/8744/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research aims at exploring physical activity and employment practice in urban China, in the context of population ageing. The overall aim of the research is to inform policy and practice focused on promoting healthy employment, longer working lives and active ageing. These aims are interrelated, for instance, a more active workforce will potentially mean a more healthy workforce which should help extend working lives in China. To achieve the study aims, the research explores the factors that influence participation in physical activity, both enablers and barriers. A questionnaire and interviews were used in fieldwork in Wuhan and Shanghai. Data from 335 self-completion questionnaires and 41 interviews were collected from respondents working in 13 organisations in these two cities. The sample included people working in both public and private organisations, health related and non-health related organisations, enabling some comparison through stratification across these categories, as well as by location. The research findings highlighted how trade-offs are made between time spent in physical activity at work and time in physical activity after work (in the home and in leisure time). For example, people who were active at work or in the home were often less active in their leisure time. This means that discounting activity in the former categories and concentrating solely on leisure time activities could potentially mistakenly categorise people as inactive or not very active.

Abstract:
Since the construction industries are constantly faced with increased costs companies are trying to find solutions to reduce production costs. NCCs goal is to reduce these costs by 5 % a year between the years 2008 to 2012. A part of this is to make the project more effective, including work preparations as a major part. A work preparation is a planning of a particular task to get this particular activity to continue without disruption. Today this is not used in full and room for improvement is available. Through literature studies and interviews we have identified possible gains that come from being careful in the planning stages, and how employees at NCC perceive work preparations in the current situation. According to the literature, there is much to gain for a company by performing work with high quality preparations. There are several factors that are positively affected by a well-done work planning such as processing quality, satisfaction among customers and staff, saved time and reduced waste. The i nterviews revealed that some jobs are planned through work preparations but in general it is difficult to find time to plan and conduct work preparations thoroughly.´Furthermore, the results were analyzed and combined so as to identify things that could be done better. We also saw that the NCCs policy regarding work preparations were almost identical to some literature, but that the employees opinion was not quite the same. Therefore the information didn’t reach them. The conclusion of this study is that work preparations are a good way to cut costs. By educating and informing their employees of work preparation, the production costs could be reduced. This is a big step towards NCC ’s 5% target.

Morris, Neil Gerald. "Working memory constellations." Thesis, Durham University, 1986. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/7057/.

Full text
Abstract:
Evidence is presented that supports the view that most models of short-term memory cannot account for the flexibility of the primary memory system. It is argued that the working memory model outlined by Baddeley and Hitch (1974) is, however, a potentially adequate model. Working memory, in this thesis, is depicted as a system that assembles 'constellations' consisting of the central executive and one or more sub-systems. This view suggests a formulation that is considerably more complex than the 1974 model. The empirical studies examine the role of the visuo-spatial scratch pad in the formation and maintenance of working memory constellations. It is concluded from these studies that the scratch pad is independent of the articulatory loop but is usually coupled to the central executive except during maintenance rehearsal. Furthermore, it can be used concurrently with the articulatory loop to process spatial aspects of highly verbal tasks. However a constellation consisting of the executive, the loop and the scratch pad is vulnerable to a wider range of interference effects than a simpler constellation. Paivio (1971) suggested that 'dual coding' leads to better memory performance, however, this is only the case when no distractors are present. The final two chapters present some speculations on how working memory research might proceed in the future. It is concluded that the current trend towards collecting convergent evidence and the emphasis on testing theory in applied situations should give us insights into memory that were not available to Ebbinghaus and other early memory researchers.

Khumalo, Keku Elizabeth. "Working against and working towards : narratives of South African women principals." Thesis, University of Pretoria, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/63183.

Full text
Abstract:
Although women continue to experience setbacks in senior education positions, few people know about that as their stories are rarely written nor told. This study is an attempt to tell such silenced stories about me and my co-story teller, Mrs Nalo. We are mothers, wives and principals of successful secondary schools in Limpopo province. The purpose of this study is to understand the experiences and challenges of women principals in a distinctly South African context. The study is a narrative of our stories with the intention of exploring our experiences so that I could better understand how our stories speak to challenges of leadership in South African Secondary Schools. My aim is to set my story alongside hers and to look for commonalities that offer insights into the stories of women principals in South Africa. The study lends itself to combination of “auto ethnography”, ethnography as well as narrative approach. In carrying out this study we kept our daily journals. We engaged in three taped recorded conversations followed by a number of telephone conversations. I transcribed verbatim the three conversations and identified common themes across both stories and read them against the Capability Approach (CA). I took a positive and optimistic stance and recognised that we were not always able to achieve our desired functionings and that at times we were not able to realise fully the potential of our capabilities. The study again found that regardless of setbacks we encounter in achieving our functionings, we still managed to convert resources at our disposal to achieve them. I also found that although CA aims to enhance the developmental opportunities for those who have been marginalised, it turns a blind eye to invisible elements of women’s lives in their profession; that of being a mother and a wife. Its logic applies primarily to the professional aspects of women’s lives. My final argument in this study is that prioritising the professional, especially for women, limits the scope and potential of a CA. CA therefore needs to wholly consider the complexities of being a woman leader, a wife and a mother, for women to be able to enhance their ability to use capabilities and resources to achieve much-valued functionings. Key words: Auto ethnography, ethnography, narrative inquiry, capability approach, agency, functionings, women principals, South Africa; women and leadership; traditional practices; developing countries; secondary school leadership.

Tsukahara, Jason Seiichi. "The Role of Working Memory Resources in Mind Wandering: The Difference Between Working Memory Capacity and Working Memory Load." CSUSB ScholarWorks, 2014. https://scholarworks.lib.csusb.edu/etd/81.

Full text
Abstract:
There is no consensus on the relationship between working memory resources and mind wandering. The purpose of the current study is to investigate whether mind wandering requires working memory resources to be sustained. The resource-demanding view is that mind wandering requires working memory resources to sustain an internal train of thought (Smallwood, 2010). The resource-free view is that mind wandering is a result of executive control failures and this internal train of thought proceeds in a resource-free manner (McVay & Kane, 2010). Participants were presented with thought probes while they performed a Simon task in single and dual task conditions. From the resource-demanding view, individuals with high WMC should experience more Task unrelated thought (TUT) in single and dual task conditions compared to those with low WMC. From the resource-free view, individuals with high WMC should experience fewer TUT compared to low WMC individuals. Results indicated that, WML eliminated the Simon effect for high WMC and reduced it for low WMC group. Mind wandering was decreased in dual task conditions however there was no effect of working memory capacity on mind wandering. Also, mind wandering correlated with task performance measures for the low WMC but not high WMC group. The results of the current study do not provide strong support for either a resource-demanding or resource-free view and are discussed in terms of a context dependent relationship between WMC and mind wandering

Scattergood, Andrew J. "Learning to play : how working-class lads negotiate working-class physical education." Thesis, University of Chester, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10034/620821.

Full text
Abstract:
Adults from the middle-classes are up to three times more likely to be regularly involved in sport than those from the working-class. The reason for this participation anomaly has been consistently linked to the differing lifestyles and opportunities to which young people from working and middle-class backgrounds are exposed. More specifically, working-class children are more likely to develop narrow, class-related leisure profiles and sporting repertoires during their childhood that serve to limit the likelihood of them remaining physically active in adulthood. In relation to this, one of the key aims of physical education (PE) in mainstream schools is to develop the range of skills and knowledge for all pupils and widen their sporting repertoires in an attempt to promote long-term participation throughout their lives. However, not only has PE provision in British mainstream schools been shown to be unsuccessful in promoting working-class pupils’ sporting/ability development, some suggest that the subject may even be perpetuating the social difference that has been shown to exist in relation to sports participation between social class groups. In order to address these issues the study set out to examine the extent to which the wider social background of white, working-class ‘lads’ and the actions and attitudes of their PE teachers came to impact on the way the lads influenced and experienced their PE curriculum/lessons. It also aimed to examine the impact that school PE then had on their sporting repertoires and participation in sport/active leisure outside of school. A total of 24 days were spent in Ayrefield Community School (ACS), a purposively selected, working-class state secondary school as part of a case study design. Over 60 practical PE lessons were observed that led to differing roles being adopted and guided conversations being conducted before, during, and after these lessons. Eight focus group interviews were also conducted with specifically chosen lads as well as one with the four members of male PE staff. Additional observations were also carried out during off-site trips, external visits, and in a range of classroom-based lessons. The findings were then considered and examined in relation to the work of the sociologists Norbert Elias and Pierre Bourdieu. The findings revealed that the pressures related to the modern education system and the social expectations linked to their working-class backgrounds caused a split between the lads at ACS in to three broad groups, namely: Problematics, Participants and Performers. These groupings came to impact on the ways that these lads engaged and achieved in school as well as the ways in which they came to negotiate and experience PE. The ‘Problematic’ group held largely negative views of education, but valued PE, especially when playing football, the ‘Participants’ were relatively successful at school yet apathetic regarding the content and delivery of their PE lessons, and a Performer group of lads emerged who engaged and achieved highly at school and participated in a range of activities in PE, but showed little intention of participating outside of school due to their pragmatic attitude to ‘learning’ in PE. Despite these differing school and PE experiences between the lads’ groups, the potential and actual impact of school PE on their sporting repertoires, skills, and interests was ultimately constrained by a range of issues. In the first instance the lads’ narrow, class-related leisure profiles and sporting repertoires linked closely to recreational participation with friends, alongside a lack of proactive parenting were significant limiting factors. In addition, the ability of some lads to constrain the actions of PE staff and peers to get what they wanted in PE rather than what they needed, and the negative views of most lads to skill development and structured PE lessons meant that PE at ACS was never likely to have a positive impact on the sporting repertoires and participation types/levels of its male pupils either currently or in their future lives.

Lloyd, Glyndwr Rhys. "European Working Time Directive : a prescription for regulating junior doctors' Working Time?" Thesis, Cardiff University, 2007. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/54647/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores attempts to regulate working time in a particular part of the medical sector. The specific focus is upon the perceptions and experiences of those in whose benefit the legislation purports to be, namely the junior doctors. It considers how the broader debates surrounding the European Working Time Directive (EWTD) are manifested in this specific section of the medical profession. The study argues that historical modes of regulation through self-governance, professional autonomy and minimal state intervention have helped to foster opposition to the EC law among many senior doctors. Their views about working-time regulation are compared to those provided by junior doctors. This enables an assessment of the ways in which traditional self-regulation has been overtaken by subsequent forms of governance in the medical profession, namely new public management and statutory control. The accommodation in process underlines the significance of the medical profession's exclusive culture and socialisation processes. These processes facilitate the transmission of ideas on issues such as work conditions, and occupational resistance to measures such as the Directive. Conversely, the difference in attitudes between senior and junior doctors reflects the evolving nature of the profession in response to increasing in managerial authority and state intervention. Following on from these debates, the study explores the processes by which the various modes of regulation have been implemented and enforced. It considers the respective roles played by the state, hospital managers and the medical profession, exploring the impact of working time regulation, with particular reference to doctors' health, medical training, and medical staffing and services. The study provides an assessment of the emerging impact of the regulation itself. The study draws upon a mix of methods including semi-structured interviews with Pre-Registration House Officers and elite figures. The latter comprise policy-makers at EC, UK and devolved levels senior figures within the medical and health services, including employer and employee representatives and members of both the UK and European judiciary. Questionnaire surveys were also administered to all PRHOs practising in Wales. The study concludes that a combination of factors have diluted the potential impact of the EWTD. These include the inadequate monitoring and enforcement mechanisms of a regulation whose fundamental terms have been 'fudged' by the state on the one hand, and the widespread application of a rigid shift system by the medical profession and hospital managers to junior doctors' training and service on the other. As a result, views on the EWTD are inconsistent and the degree of compliance with its provisions is variable.

Wilkinson, Jennifer Kate. "New working practices : identity, trust, and the emotional experience of remote working." Thesis, University of the West of England, Bristol, 2011. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.573581.

Full text
Abstract:
Developments within organisations and their management are enabling organisations to consider new ways of working in contrast to traditional office based patterns. In many cases these changes to working practices have been driven by developments in information technology (IT), which have allowed organisations to evolve into a state of flux with the emergent beginnings of a disparate workforce. Advances in IT and an emphasis on work/life balance are leading some organisations to try to capitalise on this evolution and potentially revolutionise the working environment by creating strategic organisation structures that sustain a remote workforce. The aim of this study is to explore the emotional experience of remote working. More specifically, to explore the interplay between 'identity and agency', 'trust and structure', and the relationship between the emotions expressed and the remote workers' perceptions of agency and structure. Building on a pilot study this research adopts an interpretative approach which considers remote working as a lived experience for participants who consider themselves remote workers and to varying degrees, work remotely. A survey was undertaken in the form of electronic questionnaires in order to gain a breadth of responses and to develop and inform my approach to. interview and analysis. The research then focuses on in-depth individual interviews with fifteen participants. Mind maps were used to gather data and undertake initial in-situ analysis within individual interviews. Diaries presented to participants as log accounts were also used. A thematic approach to data analysis is adopted and data interpreted within a social constructionist paradigm. The findings of the study are presented in three themes that were explored and developed within the research: identity and agency, trust and structure, and the emotional experience of remote working. The first of these explores how remote workers undertake identity work in an environment of decreased social cues and the interaction between this and their perceptions of agency. The second theme explores how remote workers attribute meaning to trust and the interaction between this and their perceptions of structure within an environment of decreased social cues. The emotional experience of remote working is discussed as guilt, isolation, frustration, and freedom and considers the interplay between the emotions expressed by participants and their perceptions of agency and structure. In brief, the research findings suggest that identity work undertaken by remote workers is intertwined with their perception of agency and that there is an interaction between the way in which remote workers attribute meaning to trust and how they perceive the structure of remote working. The research suggests further that there is interplay between the emotions expressed by remote workers and perceptions of their agency and perceptions of the structure of remote working practice. This thesis aims to contribute to the field in three ways: theoretically, methodologically and empirically. In summary, the theoretical contribution of this thesis is in its aim to initiate critical debate from an inter-subjective, interpretive perspective. The methodological contribution is via a reflective approach to interview developed in this research which addresses the issues of the hermeneutic circle and attempts to give clarity to the voice to the participants, The third contribution to the field is the empirical nature of the study which furthers understanding of the experience of remote workers by empirically evaluating the theoretical discussion around the concepts of identity, trust and emotions in light of notions of agency and structure.

Duncan, Myanna. "The impact of the Working Time Directive on junior doctors working lives." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2011. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/8516.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the regulation of working hours in the medical profession. Specifically, the research examined the impact of the Working Time Directive on the quality of working life of doctors in Foundation Years 1, 2 and Specialty Trainee Year 1. In order to achieve this objective, the research employed a mixed-methods, cross-sectional design, using qualitative and quantitative methods over the course of four studies. Data were collected over a two year period, between August 2007 and July 2009, in order to coincide with the staged implementation of the Working Time Directive in the medical profession. The data indicated that junior doctors largely welcomed a regulation of working hours and recognised the importance of regulation within the medical profession. In this vein, participants largely viewed the Directive a welcome initiative, recognising the positive impact on health, wellbeing and work-life balance. However, concerns were raised at the impact of the Directive on training and education, with the research highlighting frustration at the means through which the Directive had been implemented particularly in terms of rota design and workforce reconfiguration. In many instances, concerns regarding the impact of the Directive stemmed from a lack of clarity in the change initiatives introduced. In turn, this resulted in confusion regarding the remit of the Directive. The research has identified concerns and negative perceptions of the Directive and considered how these may be addressed. In particular, the research has highlighted issues such as management of expectations, providing greater clarity of information and the importance of staff engagement. This thesis therefore presents a range of policy and practical implications stemming from the research.

Abstract:
The existence of large, relatively comfortable, middle and working classes is what has set the advanced capitalist societies apart from most societies throughout history. These classes, while not quite "privileged," offer the hope of opportunity and upward social mobility for those who work hard. Yet in the last 30 years a growing class of "working poor" has emerged who invest many hours working but at wages that keep upward social mobility beyond their grasp. The existence of the working poor, it seems, dispels a key element in the ideology of individualism; they work hard yet do not "get ahead." This study addresses the contradiction presented by the working poor; specifically, do the working poor support the ideology of individualism? Prior research finds that the disadvantaged justify the system that inhibits them from having a better quality of life (Jost, et al. 2003). This study, however, suggests that the working poor are more conscious of the ideology's failure to explain their lack of mobility in a system that promises opportunity to those who work hard. Research data were generated through the use of telephone surveys in five counties in Central Florida with approximately 1571 respondents. Several measures of "working poor" were created; moreover, respondents within these categories tended to disagree with the "work hard, get ahead" ideology. Respondents who viewed their financial situation as getting worse, unable to grasp the "upward mobility" promise of the American Dream, also significantly disagreed with the ideology.

Hill, Peter. "Working hard or hardly working? : evaluating New Labour's active labour market policy." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2016. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/88861/.

Full text
Abstract:
When New Labour were elected in 1997, the party’s leader, Tony Blair, claimed the dawn of radical labour market reforms that would substantially reduce long-term unemployment and welfare dependency. This thesis is an evaluation of New Labour’s active labour market policy (ALMP), and focuses on the three central components of that policy agenda: the New Deal programmes, Tax Credit programmes and the National Minimum Wage. These reforms were targeted at key client groups such as the young (defined as those aged 18 to 25 year olds), the long-term unemployed, those aged over 50, the disabled and lone-parents. This thesis adopts Economics of Conventions (EC) as its focal theory, and uses a range of quantitative methods to analyse official labour market data while drawing into question the trajectories of improvement found in the official statistics. It also provides a systematic review of existing evaluative research including that conducted by the Department for Work and Pensions, Low Pay Commission and HM Treasury. This thesis found that rates of unemployment declined while New Labour were in power, arguably as a result of strong economic growth but potentially as a result of their ALMP. Rates of economic activity and inactivity did not significantly change, even after the introduction of additional obligations on lone parents. However, due to the introduction of programmes like the New Deal for Young People, individuals were re-categorised, drastically altering labour market statistics and trends. Indeed, when it comes to the justification and evaluation of their ALMP, New Labour made clear moral judgements about ‘the deserving poor’ and ‘the undeserving poor’ based on links between rights and responsibilities of benefit claimants. Indeed, the economic policies of New Labour continued and promoted neo-liberal precepts of labour market management, i.e. they focused on individual behaviour and personal responsibility, at the expense of potentially more effective policy alternatives.

Abstract:
The United Nations' Convention on the rights of the child presents a legislative framework that nations worldwide through their ratification have promised to aim for. Going from theory to practice this field study intends to investigate how the work to implement the children’s rights is carried out in reality by social institutions in Somoto Nicaragua. This essay specifically looks at how a children’s rights approach is performed in the work with working children and will therefore focus on two rights that protrude as relevant to the target group; the right to education and the right to be protected from hazardous work and economic exploitation. Furthermore, this paper considers existent criticism towards the human rights conventions for being Eurocentric in its visions and not always applicable to local conditions. Therefore the perception of working children locally in Nicaragua is examined to see how well this is in accordance with the legislation on children’s rights or if the social institutions have met difficulties in the implementation. Fundamental in the work carried out by the social institutions has been to raise awareness in the society on the children’s rights. The conclusion is that attitudes to working children have gone through a change since the introduction of a children’s rights approach in Somoto, but what remains the major obstacle to implementation is the restricted access to economic resources.

Full text
Abstract:
Efforts to abate Willamette River pollution between 1926 and 1962 centered on a struggle between abatement advocates and the two primary polluters in the watershed, the City of Portland and the pulp and paper industry. Throughout the twentieth century, the Willamette was by far the most heavily populated and industrialized watershed in Oregon. Like many other of the world's rivers, the Willamette was an integral part of municipal and industrial waste removal systems. As such, the main stem of the river carried the combined wastes from sewage outfalls serving hundreds of thousands of people and millions of gallons daily of pulp and paper making effluents. Exacerbating the impacts of these pollutants on the Willamette were unavoidable geologic and hydrologic constraints impacting the river's flow and, therefore, the river's ability to dilute wastes. As the pollution load in the Willamette River increased throughout the twentieth century, accustomed activities such as recreation, sports fishing, and commercial fishing, were constrained. The polluted water also threatened potential uses of the river, such as tourism and expanded recreation after World War II. To address these concerns, beginning in 1926 clean streams advocates created ad hoc groups of public health experts, sanitary engineers, conservationists, sportsmen, and others to pressure Portland officials and industry representatives to cease polluting the river. In November 1938, continued activism and lobbying from these groups led to the passage of a citizen's initiative creating the Oregon State Sanitary Authority (OSSA). From 1939 to 1962, the OSSA took the lead in the water pollution abatement issue and realized some limited successes including pushing Portland and other cities to build sewage treatment plants and regulating pulp and paper mill discharges. However, in spite of these accomplishments, the issue of water quality grew more complex and difficult through the 1950s, as reflected in Tom McCall's November 1962 television documentary Pollution in Paradise.

Nilsson, Maria. "Tribology in Metal Working." Licentiate thesis, Högskolan Dalarna, Materialteknik, 2012. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:du-11730.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the tribological performance of tool surfaces in two steel working operations, namely wire drawing and hot rolling. In all forming operations dimensions and surface finish of the products are of utmost importance. Forming basically includes three parts – forming conditions excluded – that may be changed; work material, tool and (possibly) lubricant. In the interface between work material and tool, the conditions are very aggressive with – generally or locally – high temperatures and pressures. The surfaces will be worn in various ways and this will change the conditions in the process. Consequently, the surface finish as well as the dimensions of the formed product may change and in the end, the product will not fulfil the requirements of the customer. Therefore, research and development in regard to wear, and consequently tribology, of the forming tools is of great interest. The investigations of wire drawing dies focus on coating adhesion/cohesion, surface characteristics and material transfer onto the coated steel both in laboratory scale as well as in the wire drawing process. Results show that it in wire drawing is possible to enhance the tribological performance of drawing dies by using a lubricant together with a steel substrate coated by a polished, dual-layer coating containing both hard and friction-lowering layers. The investigations of hot rolling work rolls focus on microstructure and hardness as well as cracking- and surface characteristics in both laboratory scale and in the hot strip mill. Results show that an ideal hot work roll material should be made up of a matrix with high hardness and a large amount of complex, hard carbides evenly distributed in the microstructure. The surface failure mechanisms of work rolls are very complex involving plastic deformation, abrasive wear, adhesive wear, mechanical and thermal induced cracking, material transfer and oxidation. This knowledge may be used to develop new tools with higher wear resistance giving better performance, lower costs and lower environmental impact.

Abstract:
Background: Becoming a mother is a period of transition for women and during this period many of them return to work. Aims: The aim of the study was to explore psychological distress when returning to work after maternity leave. Variables such as work-family conflict, work-family balance, social support and income and their relationship to psychological distress during this period were explored. Method: 195 women completed an online questionnaire, with demographic questions as well as measures assessing psychological distress, work-family-conflict, work-family-balance and social support. Correlations, t-tests, mediation and moderation analyses were used to explore the results. Results: Psychological distress was not found to be elevated in mothers returning to work after maternity leave. However, they did have high levels of work-family-conflict and work-family-balance. Social support acted as a mediator of the relationship between work-family-conflict and work-family-balance and psychological distress.

Zokaei, N. "Modulation of working memory." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2013. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1393276/.

Full text
Abstract:
Visual working memory, a limited temporary storage system for relevant information, is a critical contributor to many essential cognitive functions. In this thesis, I aimed to investigate some of the mechanisms underlying working memory in healthy humans and neurological patients, as well as its modulation by processes attributed to attention and the neurotransmitter dopamine. There currently is an important controversy regarding models of working memory. I investigated whether a resource model of memory (which argues for a limited resource distributed amongst to-be-remembered items) might be extended to the domain of visual motion. The results suggest that this is indeed be the case, supporting the utility of this model as a general conceptual framework for understanding working memory across a range of visual features and modes of presentation (Chapter 2). A comprehensive model of working memory should consider its relationship with attention. My findings point to an intimate yet highly specific relationship between these two processes, demonstrating that attention is essential for maintenance of integrated features within working memory (Chapters 2 and 4). Further, evidence for a causal role of early visual areas in maintenance of items in focus of attention, compared to the full content of working memory, is provided using transcranial magnetic stimulation (Chapter 3). Finally, I investigated neuromodulation of working memory processes by dopamine in patients with dopamine dysfunction (Parkinson’s disease) and using the dopamine agonist, Cabergoline, in healthy controls. The results demonstrate that dopamine can modulate working memory precision (Chapter 5 and 6). Furthermore, deficits in working memory were also observed in individuals with glucocerebrosidase mutations who have a significantly raised risk of developing Parkinson’s disease (Chapter 7). I discuss the possibility that specific deficits in working memory might provide a cognitive marker of risk for neurodegeneration and development of Parkinson’s disease.

Ralston, George Eastop. "Visuo-spatial working memory." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/9595.

Full text
Abstract:
This study set out to investigate the visuo-spatial component of Baddeley and Hitch's (1974) Working Memory framework. The development of our understanding of this component has been less dramatic than that of its verbal counterpart, the Articulatory Loop. The primary reason for this can be said to be the lack of techniques for investigation (Logie, 1986). This thesis presents one attempt to try to explore the nature of this code and to reveal possible new techniques of investigation. The following are three possible areas of investigation : 1. Is the system spatially or visually based? 2. Does movement have a role in the system? 3. How is information stored? The latter two issues are investigated here. Experiments 1-4 set out to explore the possibility that movement may be involved in the code. These experiments supported the idea that movement has a role to play in spatial coding and more specifically demonstrated that arm movements which are not compatible with the presentation of spatial material can cause disruption. In addition it was shown that when movement identical to that involved in presentation is encouraged at recall subjects show marked improvement in performance. Together these results very strongly suggest that movement should be given prominent reference in the definition of spatial coding and in the description of the visuo-spatial slave system. Another development that came out of these experiments relates to the lack of investigative techniques in the field of visuo-spatial short term memory. The fact that movement has been shown to be important suggests that techniques employed to investigate kinaesthetic memory will aid us in exploring visuo-spatial coding. The second issue in this thesis explored further the nature of the internal code. Research into the nature of coding in visuo-spatial memory had previously argued for the presence of a sequential component. Experiments 1-4 in this thesis had shown that movement had an important role to play in coding. The fact that movement by its very nature would appear to be sequential suggested that there was a strong sequential element in coding within visuo-spatial memory. However, concern was expressed that the materials and presentation format used may have led to sequential coding. This was first explored in experiments 5-8. The results supported the view that the material and presentation format used had led to sequential coding. This was further explored by Experiments 9 and 10 which illustrated that while it may be important under certain conditions, sequentiality is not always a dominant element in coding within the Visuo-Spatial Sketch Pad. This thesis has explored two of the central issues currently interesting theorists of Working Memory and has put forward suggestions for techniques which may in the future help us to advance our knowledge of the visuo-spatial component of the Working Memory framework.

Abstract:
what is architecture? what defines space? how do you define separation and integration of spaces? what is the relationship of human scale to space elements? how can architecture be studied? Architecture is an combination of science and art to make spaces for human needs and activities. What can an architect do to make a project, a building, not only serve its purpose but to go beyond that? A space supports human desire and imagination. Architecture provides the means and methods to make the spaces. The elements of the structure, column, wall, beam, and floor, play a very important role in defining and/or dividing a space. A room can be defined by four walls, columns or even beams. The material of the floor also outlines space. Walls, a series of columns, or ceiling beams can define an edge or enclose space and differentiate its meaning and function. The understanding of these elements and their relationship with each other and with people is the purpose of this study. In an urban situation often there is a need to design buildings with spaces for multiple activities. Separation of spaces and functions, as well as integration of different parts, is vital in such a design. Columns and walls enclose the space and characterize privacy. Their material and its characteristics make the edges of space opaque, transparent or semitransparent. The dimensions of columns and beams show the scale of the space, constraining the relationship of the people to the structural elements.

Abstract:
The focus of this thesis is professionals' understanding of the roles, priorities and competencies of other professional groups. A questionnaire survey was carried out with 104 Respondents. The results of this were graphically represented, and were subject to Participant Analysis by seventeen participants. All 104 participants were from one of seven education or social services professions working within 'Borsetshire', an English Shire County. The initial survey consisted of a series of Likert-like scales which participants rated. In the first part of the survey these scales related to priorities for three groups of children: Children in Public Care, Children with a Statement of Special Educational Needs and Children on the Child Protection Register. Participants were asked to rate the essential/ key role of given education and social services professions when working with these three groups of children; and also the frequency of support activities carried out by their own professions. Additionally they were asked to rate the frequency of activities carried out by Social Workers and Educational Psychologists in this regard. All professions were asked to rate their professional level of skills in given areas and also those of Educational Psychologists. Questionnaire results revealed much consensus between professions over roles and priorities but there were some discrepant ratings. There was a low prioritisation of the educational attainment of children in Public-Care, particularly by Social Workers. There was a marked discrepancy between Educational Psychologists and others in rating Educational Psychologists' interpersonal skills. Residential Social Workers rated their own profession as having a low level of competence with regard to a range of skills. These results were subjected to Participant Analysis which offered added insight and broadened ownership of the research process. The results are analysed in terms of a resource/dependency model. Development Actions for 'Borsetshire' and suggestions for further research are given.

Abstract:
'Ibis thesis is concerned with developing and presenting a sociological interpretation of the receptionist occupational role and its position within the social relations of general practice health . care using the concepts of street level bureaucracy, tacit knowledge transfer, and emotion work. Unlike other medically trained health service colleagues, there is limited sociological evidence about the contribution that receptionists make to NHS general practice service dcfurcry, even though these staff are the first point of contact ,'vith the public. The study reported on in this thesis explores receptionists' feelings and experiences of their occupational role, together with the associated relationships and tasks based on the analysis of combination of depth interviews and focus group discussions with thirty seven women working as receptionists in a range of inner London general practice settings, across two South London Prima.ry Care Trust areas. These data are contextualised within the sociological, and specifically medical and organisational sociologicallitcratures, that focus on the organisation of activities and work-related relationships in health care settings among administrative staff with direct public interaction. The thesis reports on how receptionists are socialised into their non-medical roles within a health care context by analysing the accounts of occupational histories from women who have been working as receptionists for a year or more. Attention in this thesis extends to the social relations of health care and the position of the receptionists vis-a-vis GP colleagues and the general public in the course of routine contact with members of the public. Through this inquiry, problematic work-related experiences and interpersonal encounters are identified, together with the ways in which the receptionists in different types of general practice have handled them. In this, consideration is given to the kinds of knowledge used in handling those situations and how that knowledge has been acquired. This thesis concludes by presenting the implications of these data from this study for medical sociology's understanding of general practice workforces and more generally for the organisation of administrative staff in health care settings.

Abstract:
Undergraduate students from California State University, San Bernardino were recruited to examine the effects of working memory training and encoding strategy upon working memory capacity. Participants will be prescreened for low working memory capacity, and then will be tested on a battery of complex span measures. Participants will be divided into several strategy conditions: rehearsal, visual, and control. Then participants will be tested on their verbal working memory both before and after the 20 session n-back working memory training program. Participants are predicted to do the same or worse with the strategy instruction before working memory training while they will improve after training in comparison to control groups. The effects of strategy and training upon working memory capacity were nonsignificant. However, the direction of group differences is consistent with the maximization of individual differences with strategy instruction while cognitive training minimizes individual differences.

Abstract:

Pierce, James. "Working by Not Quite Working: Resistance as a Technique for Alternative and Oppositional Designs." Research Showcase @ CMU, 2015. http://repository.cmu.edu/dissertations/619.

Full text
Abstract:
Since the early 2000s, within the fields of Design and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) an emerging body of unconventional design work has exemplified and articulated alternative and oppositional functions of design. Examples of such functions include provocatively speculating about alternative futures (speculation), questioning the status quo (critique), and debating political issues (agonism). Prominent examples of alternative and oppositional design have originated within HCI. Others have been heavily discussed, adapted, and critiqued within HCI. Alternative and oppositional designs have been presented under various names: critical design, design fiction, adversarial design, reflective design, ludic design, speculative design… At this moment the list continues to grow while examples of such work proliferate. This work collectively demonstrates the potential for design to engage concerns and goals that pivot around themes of generating radical alternatives and creating productive political, cultural, and social opposition. This thesis argues that there is a body of unconventional design work that becomes cohesive and legible when held together by themes of oppositionality and alternatives, and operating throughout these designs is a technique which I term design resistance. This thesis presents two primary contributions. The first contribution is to isolate and elaborate resistance as a design technique at work across a range of alternative and oppositional designs. I articulate how design resistance works by analyzing a series of design exemplars drawn from HCI and adjacent areas of Design. The second contribution is to extend and refine the overarching technique of design resistance through two design case studies. These design case studies serve the dual function of offering additional insight into design resistance grounded in my own design practice while concretely demonstrating new knowledge relevant to specific domains and concerns within HCI, including sustainable energy consumption and critiques of digital consumer technologies. Together these contributions provide new knowledge for (1) understanding the rise of alternative and oppositional designs, the concerns they are working to engage, and the research gaps they are working to fill, and (2) how to practice alternative and oppositional forms of design using techniques of design resistance.
