Abstract:
Remote working has many synonyms—such as teleworking, telecommuting, or virtual working. It is often considered to be enabled by advanced information and communications technologies which allow the electronic transfer of information, so that workers can communicate and coordinate tasks in multiple locations and asynchronously. It is the purpose of this article to explore the nature, consequences, and management of remote working. The article starts by examining the incidence of remote working, the major aspects of remote work, and why this form of working is attractive. It then moves on to explore workers' experience of remote work. The article also examines issues in the coordination of remote teams and communication between remote workers. The final section examines the management of remote workers.

Gearhart, Robert. Archaeological Interpretation of Marine Magnetic Data. Edited by Ben Ford, Donny L. Hamilton, and Alexis Catsambis. Oxford University Press, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199336005.013.0004.

Abstract:
Interpreting remote sensing data is one of the most important tasks of archaeologists working in submerged environments. Researchers rely on remote-sensing technologies to aid their search for historic shipwrecks of interest. Magnetometers are essential for detection of buried shipwrecks. The main goal of magnetic interpretation has been to distinguish shipwrecks from debris, usually resulting in an archaeological assessment of each anomaly concerning its potential for historic significance. The past two decades have seen improvement in archaeologists' abilities to detect shipwreck anomalies. This article provides a basic, nonmathematical summary of magnetism relevant to archaeological interpretation and the evolving perceptions of shipwreck anomalies. The basis for assessing magnetic anomaly significance must be firmly rooted in empiricism in order to improve the objectivity of data interpretation.

Craven, Rachael, Hilary Edgcombe, and Ben Gupta, eds. Global Anaesthesia. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198809821.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The Oxford Specialist Handbook of Global Anaesthesia is an authoritative and comprehensive reference tool for anaesthetists practising in low-resource settings. It provides essential information to trained anaesthetists on delivering care without the equipment, drugs, and colleague support they might be used to in high-resource settings. Written by international experts in the field it will be useful to anaesthetists planning to work in remote and rural areas or countries with poor healthcare resources. It will also be useful to those working as part of disaster and emergency response medical teams. The technical and organizational aspects of delivering anaesthesia in austere environments are addressed, as are drugs and equipment that might be unfamiliar to anaesthetists practising in high-resource settings, e.g. ketamine and draw-over anaesthesia. The sub-specialties of obstetrics, paediatrics, burns, pain, trauma, and critical care are all covered in the clinical section. Useful reference tables, including a drug formulary, ensure that this book is the essential ‘survival guide’ for any trained anaesthetic practitioner planning to work or teach in a remote or resource-poor environment.

Abstract:
This study aims to present the plurality of the teacher’s perception, which emerges from the actions taken to minimize the difficulties that come up in remote education. Its relevance is found in the actions and reactions of those involved, and make up possibilities for generating public policies that motivate and foster quality education. The following research question guided this work: What lessons could be learned by those involved in their teaching practice after schools reopen? An exploratory research was carried out, by choosing the methodological approach of qualitative research. Data collection was performed using an online questionnaire, directed to teachers who worked in the classroom and started working in remote education. Sharing knowledge is complex and demands a variety of actions, interventions, processes that, however sophisticated the technology used, it certainly does not allow to develop all the strategies that the teacher uses in the classroom. Technologies help with physical distance. But we believe the exchange that happens naturally between teacher and student, and between student and student, exists only when everyone is in the same physical environment, under the same physical and human conditions, especially in basic education. The lessons learned: (i) improve our training or post-training with the introduction of disciplines related to digital and technological means; (ii) understand that remote education is a possibility to be applied in our teaching practice; (iii) include viable teaching, learning and assessment alternatives in the Political Pedagogical Project; (iv) at parent-teacher conferences or class meetings, seek to collect all possible observations, both positive and negative. We need to considerate new routes, minimize the questions that arise during practice, in order to adapt to the new technological strategies of the art of teaching.

Abstract:
This study provides a detailed study of the fishing nation of Taiwan at a regional and local level in order to address the lack of academic research into the Taiwanese fishing industry in comparison to other nations. Over three stages of analysis it identifies the reasons for the rise and decline of Taiwanese distant-water fisheries. The first stage examines the broader historical background, government policy, and birth of the Taiwanese fishing industry. The second explores the industry at a national level, analysing the relationships between fishing, government, military, and ancillary industries. The third approach narrows the scope to individual fishing communities and explores the working lives and cultural habits of the fishermen. The major focus is the port of Kaohsiung and how it became the major supply base for the fishing industry. It explores Taiwan’s relationship with Japan and the postwar decline due to Japan’s losses in the Second World War. Finally, it considers the development of Taiwanese colonial and postwar fishing policies. It concludes that modern fishing techniques were introduced from Japan, and emboldened Taiwanese fisherman to risk entering remote and foreign waters. The author suggests that further research into Taiwan take would help scholars better understand the history of distant-fisheries. The journal consists of nine chapters, an introduction and conclusion, a list of interviewees, and a bibliography of English and Chinese-language sources.
