With the growth of all the e-commerce activities in the world, people have chosen to request electronic services that are becoming more and more widespread, especially with the use of the internet, that its now present in all of our life. With this new scenario, the markets and the general people request mobile applications or “apps” that helps them in their daily life and routines. These apps are getting more customizable and adapting to their customer’s needs, retrieving the requested information and performing the service with no delay in response. In this context, House Worker's business project was born, in the face of the need of families who require specialized services to maintain and increase the comfort of the home. This will be possible with the collaboration of special technicians who will provide the service in short time depending on the needs of the users. House Workers will provide better offers of electricity and plumbing services, which will be requested through the mobile application that will always be committed to providing the best service and fulfilling its objective of providing to families all the help they need regarding the malfunction with their home appliances, electric connections, or some trouble with their pipes. In addition to providing preventive maintenance in due time. Initially, the service will be provided only at Lima Metropolitana, nevertheless we will plan to expand to the other peripheral districts compatible with our target audience and we project the possibility to reach other cities of the country.

McCracken, Jill Linnette. "Listening to the Language of Sex Workers: An Analysis of Street Sex Worker Representations and Their Effects on Sex Workers and Society." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/194013.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation argues that the material conditions of many street sex workers--the physical environments they live in and their effects on the workers' bodies, identities, and spirits--are represented, reproduced, and entrenched in the language surrounding their work. My research is an ethnographic case study of a local system that can be extrapolated to other subcultures and the construction of identities, while situating sex work and the industry as rhetorical constructions. My research offers an example of how an examination of the signs and symbols that comprise "material conditions" can be rhetorically analyzed in order to better understand how goals, agendas, interests, and ideologies are represented and implemented through language.Located central to my analysis are the street sex workers' voices. I use an ideological rhetorical analysis, or rhetorically--the study of how language shapes and is shaped by cultures, institutions, and the individuals within them, and ideologically--the identification and examination of the underlying assumptions of communicative interactions. I delineate how these material conditions are reproduced and, at times, subverted, and I offer an outline for modifying the discourse used in policy in ways that are more empowering and authentic to sex workers' lives.Policy makers, activists, and academics, among others, wrestle with complicated issues to analyze and write laws and policies and to design social services. Discourse is always at the center of these struggles. Because my study investigates the language of policy-making and the people who forge it, it has implications for ethics and policy in relation to gender studies, cultural studies, and ethnographic research.Examining the rhetorical constructions and interactions and their related effects on policy elucidates the discursive complexity that exists in meaning-making systems. This analysis also offers an explanation of how constructions can be made differently in order to achieve representations that are generated by the marginalized populations themselves, while placing responsibility for this marginalization on the society in which these people live.

Weinreich, Heidi Marie. "Burnout among National Association of Social Workers Healthcare Social Workers." ScholarWorks, 2015. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/611.

Full text
Abstract:
Burnout is a common occurrence for many healthcare social workers, though little academic literature addresses the impacts of the organizational environment on burnout among healthcare social workers. The purpose of this correlational study was to evaluate what organizational factors predict burnout in the healthcare environment while considering sociodemographic and organizational factors. An adaptation of Maslach's multidimensional theory of burnout served as the framework for this study. Surveys were distributed to members of the National Association of Social Workers who are employed in healthcare environments, resulting in a sample size of 237 useable responses. A multiple linear regression statistical analysis indicated that workload, reward, values, and level of care predicted emotional exhaustion, and therefore the potential for burnout (p < .001). Findings were consistent with the theoretical framework employed. Policy implications include the need for healthcare environments to develop standard operating procedures to address organizational barriers for social workers that contribute to social workers burnout. Implications for social change include an identified need to address burnout through healthcare organizations, professional associations, and academia using education, intervention, and policy.

Charbonneau, Daniel, Takao Sasaki, and Anna Dornhaus. "Who needs ‘lazy’ workers? Inactive workers act as a ‘reserve’ labor force replacing active workers, but inactive workers are not replaced when they are removed." PUBLIC LIBRARY SCIENCE, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/625813.

Full text
Abstract:
Social insect colonies are highly successful, self-organized complex systems. Surprisingly however, most social insect colonies contain large numbers of highly inactive workers. Although this may seem inefficient, it may be that inactive workers actually contribute to colony function. Indeed, the most commonly proposed explanation for inactive workers is that they form a 'reserve' labor force that becomes active when needed, thus helping mitigate the effects of colony workload fluctuations or worker loss. Thus, it may be that inactive workers facilitate colony flexibility and resilience. However, this idea has not been empirically confirmed. Here we test whether colonies of Temnothorax rugatulus ants replace highly active (spending large proportions of time on specific tasks) or highly inactive (spending large proportions of time completely immobile) workers when they are experimentally removed. We show that colonies maintained pre-removal activity levels even after active workers were removed, and that previously inactive workers became active subsequent to the removal of active workers. Conversely, when inactive workers were removed, inactivity levels decreased and remained lower post-removal. Thus, colonies seem to have mechanisms for maintaining a certain number of active workers, but not a set number of inactive workers. The rapid replacement (within 1 week) of active workers suggests that the tasks they perform, mainly foraging and brood care, are necessary for colony function on short timescales. Conversely, the lack of replacement of inactive workers even 2 weeks after their removal suggests that any potential functions they have, including being a 'reserve', are less important, or auxiliary, and do not need immediate recovery. Thus, inactive workers act as a reserve labor force and may still play a role as food stores for the colony, but a role in facilitating colony-wide communication is unlikely. Our results are consistent with the often cited, but never yet empirically supported hypothesis that inactive workers act as a pool of 'reserve' labor that may allow colonies to quickly take advantage of novel resources and to mitigate worker loss.

Abstract:
I wrote an essay called "Buyers and Workers" where I questioned topics of the painting as an art object or a commodity, and I discussed the artist's function in society. With my examination show I examined if the artist could be put in a standard working model of commercial market of our contemporary, and what the result and the experience of this structured way of working might be. Questions like "What is the product or commodity in the project?" was raised through the process.
[I examensarbetet ingår utställningen "Full Time Work":] Throughout the 7 days my show was open I painted lines on the walls. I followed a working schedule, I had made beforehand, similar to the opening hours of commercial market, thereby questioning artistic labor and art production within a working structure of what we know from society. The schedule dictated that I worked on the walls 45 minuts per hour, and that I by each hour changed colors. The total amount of sessions I worked per day was 8, thereby also using 8 different colors. Each day I would use the same colors in the same hour, starting with the bright yellow and finishing with the dark blue. I worked in a total of 6 hours per day, having a total of 2 hours spare time per day. When the 7 days were up, I had succeeded in painting nearly one and a half walls, creating a beautiful pattern. Material: Acrylic wallpaint Teknik: Paint on wall

My examination work consits of a painting performance at Galleri Mejan and my Master essay.

Biggs, David Michael. "Employment agency workers, their job satisfaction and their influence on permanent workers." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/4479.

Full text
Abstract:
Agency workers are a fundamental part of modern work being characterised in the workplace by a triangular employment relationship between them, the employment agency and the third party employer. The thesis was concerned about the job satisfaction of agency workers on two counts. Firstly, what contributed towards the job satisfaction of this unique type of worker? Secondly, what differences in job satisfaction and related variables arise between agency workers and permanent workers? Preliminary research along with a literature review on job satisfaction and agency workers formulated two sets of hypotheses, those variables relating to agency worker job satisfaction (relational hypotheses), and differences between permanent workers and agency workers (differential hypotheses). Both sets of hypotheses were tested by a quantitative survey, which surveyed 96 agency workers for the relational hypotheses and 157 call centre workers for the differential hypotheses. For the differential hypotheses a control group was used to address the possible influence that the employment of agency workers may have on permanent workers that hitherto has not been controlled for in studies of a similar nature. Semi-structured interviews with workers and employers were used to enlarge the quantitative findings. Organisational commitment, permanent and agency worker relationship were found to be significantly related to job satisfaction in both a correlation and hierarchical multiple linear regression analysis. Involuntary work status had no correlation challenging previous research. Significant differences were seen between agency workers and permanent workers on a number of variables including skill variety, job satisfaction, organisational commitment and job security satisfaction. These results both supported and contradicted previous studies primarily as preceding research had not accounted for the possible influence that agency workers may have on the permanent workers under research.

Drew, Erica N. "Personnel Selection, Safety Performance, and Job Performance: Are Safe Workers Better Workers?" FIU Digital Commons, 2014. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/1231.

Abstract:
The present dissertation consists of two studies that combine personnel selection, safety performance, and job performance literatures to answer an important question: are safe workers better workers? Study 1 tested a predictive model of safety performance to examine personality characteristics (conscientiousness and agreeableness), and two novel behavioral constructs (safety orientation and safety judgment) as predictors of safety performance in a sample of forklift loaders/operators (N = 307). Analyses centered on investigating safety orientation as a proximal predictor and determinant of safety performance. Study 2 replicated Study 1 and explored the relationship between safety performance and job performance by testing an integrative model in a sample of machine operators and construction crewmembers (N = 323). Both Study 1 and Study 2 found conscientiousness, agreeableness, and safety orientation to be good predictors of safety performance. While both personality and safety orientation were positively related to safety performance, safety orientation proved to be a more proximal determinant of safety performance. Across studies, results surrounding safety judgment as a predictor of safety performance were inconclusive, suggesting possible issues with measurement of the construct. Study 2 found a strong relationship between safety performance and job performance. In addition, safety performance served as a mediator between predictors (conscientiousness, agreeableness and safety orientation) and job performance. Together these findings suggest that safe workers are indeed better workers, challenging previous viewpoints to the contrary. Further, results implicate the viability of personnel selection as means of promoting safety in organizations.

Abstract:
In this study, a demand oriented simultaneous equation macroeconometric model with a dynamic perspective is constructed in order to investigate the impact of workers&rsquo
remittances on output growth via their effects on key macro variables such as private consumption, investment and imports for Turkey. The study covers the period of 1964-2003 on an annual basis. Results of the analysis suggest that workers&rsquo
remittances affect output growth in a positive manner through the multiplier process. It is found that the highest induced growth rate by remittances to output growth belongs to the early 1970s especially the year of 1973, which corresponds to the date of first oil shock and also the end of labour migration to Europe. Thus, it is concluded that although workers&rsquo
remittances have been mostly used for consumption and imports as mentioned in most of the studies both for Turkey and other countries, remittances contributed to economic growth of Turkey positively through the multiplier process especially in the early 1970s.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to advance the control and estimation schemes for multirotors, and more specifically the Aerial Robotic Worker, in order to progress towards the necessary control and estimation performance for robust control, cooperation and collaboration. Towards this envisioned aim, this Licentiate thesis will present the following main research contributions: a) a singularity-free attitude controller for the attitude problem has been established, that does not have the inherent drawbacks of Euler angle or Direction Cosine Matrix based approaches, b) a generalized estimation scheme for attitude, position and parameter estimation will be presented that has the merit of low computational footprint, while it is robust towards magnetic disturbances and able to identify key parameters in the model of an Aerial Robotic Worker, c) an method for estimating the induced vibration frequencies on the multirotor’s frame, and the respective amplitudes, that relies on notch filtering for attenuating the induced vibrations, and d) a theoretical establishment, as well as an experimental development and evaluation of a variable pitch propeller model to add additional degrees of freedom and increase the robustness of an Aerial Robotic Worker. In the first part of this thesis the main contributions of the previous research approaches will be highlighted, while in the second part of the thesis the corresponding and in full detail articles will be presented.

Abstract:
This work presents an analysis to the Workers' Compensation best estimate under the Solvency II regime that came into force in January 1st 2016, modelling the liabilities based on the applicable legislation, mainly the Law 98/2009. Within the scope of Solvency II, the best estimate of non-life liabilities are calculated separately under claims provision (concerning claims that have already happened) and premium provision (concerning future claims that are covered by the existing contractual obligations). The best estimate of life liabilities should be calculated separately for each policy. Workers' Compensation presents the particularity of being composed of different natured liabilities, which provides in its modeling the application of life and non-life actuarial methodologies. Under Solvency II, these liabilities are split into two lines of business: Workers' Compensation insurance using non similar to life techniques (NSLT) and annuities stemming from non-life insurance contracts and relating to health insurance obligations using similar to life techniques (SLT). The approach to this report was conducted separately considering the breakdown of the best estimate under Solvency II and the Workers' Compensation liabilities divided into non similar and similar to life techniques. Due to the diversification of existing literature, this work has been developed focusing on the methodologies that are most frequently applied in the insurance market.

Abstract:
In our legal system, fundamental rights to life and health of workers are important legallyprotected goods that cannot be disregarded. Therefore, the State and the   employers must put special emphasis on health and security surveillance of workers to prevent that employment relationships become an obstacle or a violation of such rights. In light of these precepts, the author makes an analysis of the protection given to these fundamental rights in our country. Basing on comparative legislation, she poses general concepts of  the State’s and the  employer´s responsibility of health and security surveillance of workers, allowing her to conclude that our system has still to confront many challenges in the path to achieve effective protection and enforcement of therights at stake.

Abstract:
Existing literature about autistic workers concentrates on the troubles autistics have in the workplace; these problems are linked back to documented deficits in autistic people, thereby constructing a picture of autistic workers as people who need to be helped. There have been no academic studies asking autistic adults to give their general impressions on their work environments. The paucity of narratives from working autistic authorities has effectively made them into a hidden, or invisible population. We do not know if they agree with the views presented about them. We do not know what jobs they are in or in what levels of authority they are working. The only way to understand working autistic adults and their worth and presence in the workforce, is to ask them. This exploratory, qualitative study asked 38 autistic adults (currently working or who have a past work history) 55 questions about their work environments. Most participants provided elaborative answers about their work experiences. Participant experiences often contradicted current literature about autistic adults or mentioned little known phenomenon. Confirmation of existing themes in autism literature was sometimes arguable. The narrative accounts gathered in this study give new opportunities for research into autistic adults and their places in society.

Abstract:
Migrant workers in China tend to suffer from inferior status and hardship in the workplace. Domestic private enterprises have become highly market-oriented and have been criticized for exploiting workers; however, some of them have started to pay increasing attention to motivating and retaining workers. The well-being of migrant workers is worthy of study. This study collected survey data from migrant workers in two Chinese private enterprises in the cosmetics industry, aiming to probe how a harmonious and supportive working environment may benefit workers. It is argued that HR???s assistance to line managers can be conveyed to workers via supervisors, leading to perceptions of a supportive working system (represented by the behaviour of HR, managers and supervisors). This kind of system is likely to promote employees??? identification with the organisation and social exchanges with organisational members. Further, these may improve workers??? psychological state and cooperative worker relations. This thesis starts by presenting migrant workers??? experience and discussing how HRM is practised in Chinese private enterprises. Studies of organisational support are introduced as a foundation to explore the influences of HR on employee outcomes???emotional exhaustion and co-worker assistance???through the mechanism of supervisor support. The results validate the substantial role of effective HR assistance to line managers and the role of the supportive supervisor in improving employees??? well-being and in facilitating helping behaviour among co-workers. Finally, implications for management practices and future research are considered.

Kim, Jin-Hee. "Border crossing on migrant workers' lifelong learning : a study of migrant workers' learning community." Thesis, University of Surrey, 2010. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/2831/.

Full text
Abstract:
The migration shows that our world are increasingly becoming heterogeneous, multi-racial and multicultural. It produces complex contexts and ranges of human learning that lead to bordercrossing of different learning experiences. Lifelong learning is one of the crucial ways to advance human's self empowerment and social development appreciating learners' experience regardless of geographic location, race, gender and class. Particularly, this thesis argues that lifelong learning involves deriving roles to enhance a full participation of different social agenCIes including underprivileged migrant workers, as one of the devalued learning groups. The investigation of how migrant workers learn in the non-formal learning community requires critical analysis. The learning paths through using qualitative research methodologies, in terms of learning needs, processes, domains and mechanisms are investigated whilst conducting an exploratory case study in Korea. The theoretical foundation of lifelong learning related to migration suggests that migration is an interconnected social practice expanding cultural, ethnic, communicative difference and plurality in the learning society. The findings show that migrants' learning is an ongoing process and it is fundamental to their life itself to cope with their social disjuncture. It identifies implications for the novel understanding of the migrant worker as a subjective learning agency, rather than as a 'guest working machine'. Despite societal oppression and exclusion, they attempt to broaden their critical awareness of the world and self understanding throughout continuous engagements in the community. It could enlighten marginalised learners' 'voice' and their empowerment using reflections and transformations of their experiences in a critical manner. Hence this work satisfies requirements of intellectual rigor as well as highlighting hidden learning issues facilitating an appreciation of migrants' life experience and their civic participation through social learning opportunities. It takes the discussion to new levels of how lifelong learning policy reveals further researches that will develop current practice and theory.

Acciari, Louisa. "Paradoxes of subaltern politics : Brazilian domestic workers' mobilisations to become workers and decolonise labour." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2018. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/3839/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the possibilities and forms of subaltern politics through an empirical study of Brazilian domestic workers' mobilisations. Domestic work, often described as a legacy of slavery in Brazil, is characterised by the intersection of gender, race and class matrices of oppression, which makes domestic workers a subaltern group. As a result of their subaltern status and characterisation as 'non-standard' workers they are expected to be harder, or even impossible, to organise and represent. Yet, Brazilian domestic workers have been organising since 1936; they formed their own autonomous trade unions, and won partial recognition in 2015 when the Brazilian Congress approved a law extending basic labour rights to them. Thus, my thesis examines how this subaltern group has been able to organise, and argues that instead of considering subalternity as an impediment to collective action it should be understood as a potential resource for mobilisation. I have identified three paradoxes of subaltern politics. First, I show how the professional identity 'domestic worker' is both necessary for political recognition in the Brazilian corporatist state, but also rejected, as it re-inscribes domestic workers into the raced-gendered power relations they want to challenge. Furthermore, I find that while the intersecting nature of their oppression is what has constructed domestic workers as a subaltern group, it has also enabled the formation of broad-based alliances with women, black and workers' movements, thereby turning subalternity into a resource for collective action. Finally, domestic workers have used their perceived vulnerability to force recognition from the Brazilian state, yet, this has led to a paternalistic mode of recognition and a certain demobilisation of the domestic workers' local unions. As domestic workers gained partial recognition as workers, they were also forced into an industrial relations model that did little to respond to the complex and multi-sided forms of oppressions they face, posing new challenges to their modes of organising.

ABSTRACT NOISE ASSESSMENT OF SHIPYARD WORKERS Can,Ö

n M.Sc.,Department of Engineering Sciences Supervisor : Prof.Dr.Gü
lin Birlik May 2008,139 pages Noise is one of the most important health risks in workplaces worldwide and NIOSH identified noise as one of the 10 important occupational problems. In OSHA'
s hearing conservation amendment it is stated that in U.S., more than 5 million workers are exposed to potentially hazardous levels of noise in manufacturing and utilities. In 1981 OSHA estimated that, at least one million workers in industry had undergone occupational hearing loss. Ship building has been one of the most promising and rapidly growing industries in Turkey in the recent years. It comprises many production techniques and activities, requires qualified personnel and compliance with several class institutions making the job interesting for the enthusiastic engineers and workers. However shipyard workers are subject to high levels of noise besides other health risks. The aim of this study is to figure out the effect of noise on shipyard workers. For this purpose 2 factories, namely Factory 1 and Factory 2 in a shipyard were chosen and two methods were adopted. The first method was the subjective evaluation of the workers through questionnaires distributed to them, whereas the second method involved the noise level measurement during their work hours. At all the points in Factory 1 where noise level measurements have been done, higher A-weighted values of noise than the limits stated in the legal regulations were found. In Factory 2, noise levels were all below the action value of 85 dBA .Dose measurements of the workers displayed the extremely variable acoustical conditions that the workers encountered. According to the &ldquo
Noise Regulation&rdquo
of Ministry of Labour and Social Security and &ldquo
The European Noise Directive&rdquo
, the employer seems to be obliged to measure periodically and to assess the level of noise exposure of workers in Factory 1 and take immediately the necessary precautions. Ear plug performance and speech interference conditions were also examined.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation consists of three substantive essays on public economics, each corresponding to a chapter. In the first essay, a two-sector search model of labour market where in the one sector firms evade profit taxes (underground economy) is developed. A comparative static analysis has been employed in order to test the impact of cOIporate taxation on unemployment, occupational choice ofindividuals, mix of jobs, welfare of agents and the size of infOIDlal sector. The findings suggest that profit, severance (firing) and payroll taxation have the same effects on the above economic variables. However, if a condition which connects the elasticity of the arrival rate of jobs with respect to labour market tightness, with the rate of the elasticities of labour market tightness and of the fraction of vacancies in the fOIDlal sector with respect to corporate taxation does not hold, then the number of individuals searching for jobs only in the informal sector decreases with profit taxes. Moreover, if the aforementioned condition holds, then the welfare ofthe underground sector 'oriented' individuals (search only for informal sector jobs) increases with corporate taxation. In the second essay, an extension of the traditional Roy model so as to incorporate the existence of search frictions is proposed. Then the efficiency of model is tested under the existence of the standard Hosios condition. The results show that a new kind of externality whichis relatedwith the match acceptance probabilities arises and therefore Hosios condition fails to guarantee efficiency. Policies which subsidize employment and aim at the job specialization ofindividuals, Win equate the social with the private market outcome. Finally, the third essay study the effect of tax competition on the level of taxes and on the provision ofpublic goods. More specifically, a simple interregional model is constructed. One ofthe regions has zerttaxes and therefore does not provide public goods. This region can be characterized as a rural area. Our analysis show that the income differentials of the individuals who choose to live and work in the zero tax region influence the result of tCl:X competition. If there is (no) income inequality in the rural population then tax competition leads to inefficiently high (low) taxes and overprovision (undeIprovision) of public good. Moreover when there are no wage differentials among rural workers and the wage they receive is relatively low, then policies which aim at their specialization will reduce rural depopulation.

Simone, Shannon Rose. "The stigmatization of deathcare workers." Master's thesis, University of Central Florida, 2011. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/5035.

Abstract:
Research has indicated that Funeral Directors and Embalmers are stigmatized for their work. Studies have shown that, although the decay of dead bodies is a stigmatized process in American culture, these particular deathcare workers are able to shift the focus of their services from the dead to the living. However, there remains a lack of research regarding deathcare workers who are not employed as Funeral Directors or Embalmers--those whose positions are not as obvious to the general public. This research explores how, why, and to what degree stigma is placed on those individuals who spend the majority of their work time in direct contact with dead bodies, as opposed to grieving family members. Interviews with funeral employees have been utilized to provide insight into this phenomenon. Results of the analysis show that frequency of contact with bodies is only one of three major factors influencing the stigma of deathcare workers. These results are examined and directions for future research are offered.

Zhivan, Natalia A. "The Employment of Older Workers." Thesis, Boston College, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/618.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Alicia H. Munnell
This thesis focuses on the employment of older workers and addresses the following questions: how people make their retirement decision, how changes in the Social Security benefit rules can encourage older workers to stay in the labor force longer, and what impediments older workers face on the labor market that can prevent them from working longer and interrupt their retirement plans. As the U.S. population ages, retirement and Social Security claiming decisions of older workers will have a significant impact on the U.S. economy. By the year of 2030 about 20 percent of the population will be 65 years old or older. The national retirement system generates less income in retirement than it did in the past. Rising Full Retirement Age, the shift of the private pension system from predominantly defined benefit to predominantly defined contribution pension plans, and increasing longevity will have to force older workers to stay in the labor force in the future to provide adequate income in retirement. Chapter one presents a dynamic stochastic retirement model that incorporates observed heterogeneity in educational attainment level. The assumption is that educational attainment level is highly correlated with the characteristics, such as preferences for work, types of jobs, and financial planning horizon that determine timing of retirement. A parsimonious model that incorporates heterogeneity in educational attainment level and stochastic earnings and health predicts the labor force participation rates and Social Security rates by age accurately. This model provides intuition for why college graduates tend to claim Social Security benefits and exit labor force later in life - longer life expectancy, non-physically demanding jobs, longer financial planning horizon, and deriving positive utility from work encourage college graduates to retire later. Chapter two develops and tests a policy rule regarding the availability of reduced early Social Security retirement benefits that would encourage older workers to stay in the labor force longer without amplifying the hardship on the more vulnerable population. The availability of Social Security retirement benefits at the current Earliest Eligibility Age (EEA) is considered the main impediment to longer working lives. Raising the EEA is thus considered the most powerful channel to raise the labor force participation rate. But raising the EEA would create hardship among workers with low private savings who are unable to work or find employment until the higher eligibility age. This study proposes and analyzes a new approach to setting each worker's EEA based on an individual's average lifetime earnings--an Elastic EEA. Low average lifetime earnings will likely reflect either poor health or spotty work histories, both of which are associated with weak employment prospects and limited financial resources at age 62. Tying the EEA to the average lifetime earnings could thus protect many of these vulnerable workers while encouraging longer working lives and increasing Social Security monthly benefits for workers more capable of remaining in the labor force. Simulations suggest that an Elastic EEA would achieve its goal in providing higher employment rates and levels of consumption in retirement compared to the status quo. These simulations also demonstrate the limitations of structural retirement models used to estimate the effect of raising the EEA. By assuming the same probabilities of losing and finding a job for all individuals, these models underestimate the adverse effect of raising the EEA on the more vulnerable population. Although some older workers may like to stay longer in the labor force, they may have hard time holding on to their jobs due to displacement. Chapter three is devoted to the trends in displacement of older workers. Conventional wisdom says older workers are less likely to be displaced. However, the difference in displacement rates between younger and older workers disappeared in the 2006 Displaced Worker Survey (DWS). The increased vulnerability of older workers appears to be the reason for this convergence. To better understand the age-displacement relationship, this study takes advantage of the availability of job tenure information and consistent design of the DWS since 1996. Using a Blinder--Oaxaca decomposition, it analyzes the effect of changes in tenure, industry mix, and educational attainment on the displacement rates of younger and older workers. The results show that older workers are now more likely to be displaced than prime-age workers, conditional on education, manufacturing industry, and tenure

Kramarek, Michal. "Prison ministry workers in Indiana." Thesis, Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis, 2016. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10009745.

Full text
Abstract:

This work describes prison chaplains and chapel volunteers from three perspectives: (1) a historical perspective which is used to investigate the role of religion in prisons, (2) the chaplains’ perspective on the partnership between chaplains and chapel volunteers, and (3) the volunteers’ perspective on the predictors of volunteering in prison ministry.

First, the study provides a historical perspective on the role of prison ministry workers in prisons by examining: (a) the role of religion in the philanthropic life of John Howard, an eighteenth century prison reformer, (b) the role of religion in satisfying socio-economic pre-conditions that led to prison reform during the period of the Industrial Revolution, and (c) the role of religion during the development and evolution of the penal systems in the USA.

Second, the study explores the partnership between paid chaplains working for over three months at ten state, medium to high-level security, men’s prisons in Indiana, and chapel volunteers providing in-person ministry work. The study is primarily based on in-person, in-depth interviews with 25 chaplains. Using modified analytic induction, the research leads to identification of four roles adopted by chaplains: Pastoral Counselor, Religious Coordinator, Administrative Minister, and Advocate for Prisoners. The study describes the partnership in general and explains how chaplains in each of these different roles perceive conflict and collaboration with volunteers.

Third, the study constructs a sampling frame consisting of an estimated 916 to 1,132 chapel volunteers working in the ten prisons. The study is based on responses to a survey based on a convenience sample of 106 of these volunteers. The study uses OLS regression to test 32 hypotheses. Among other things, the study finds that statistically significant predictors of higher amount and higher frequency of volunteering to prison ministry include: being retired, shorter length of commute to prison, tenure as prison ministry volunteer, lower motivation to develop and strengthen social ties, and higher frequency of attending religious services.

The work concludes with a summary and discussion of the findings, implications for theory and practitioners (including policymakers, prison administrators, chaplains, and volunteers), as well as limitations and suggestions for future research.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore the demographic variables, typical vocational services, and competitive employment rates of older workers, ages 40 - 69 years of age, with disabilities using the RSA-911 database. The results describe the types of services received and the competitive employment outcomes for state and federal vocational rehabilitation consumers receiving services in 2009. Furthermore the sample of older workers (N = 1,152) was equally stratified into three age groups. Older workers, aged 60 to 69, had higher levels of education, received more types of vocational services, and were competitively employed at a much higher rate than those in the other age groups. The methods, discussion, study limitations, and recommendations for future research are presented.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Decreasing birth rates and increasing life expectancy have led to the ageing of the German population during the past decades. To sustain the German retirement system, retirement age is increased to 67 years. The European Union calls for individuals’ lifelong learning to maintain work ability and cope with challenges of technological and organisational change. This dissertation consists of a literature overview and three empirical essays investigating older workers’ motivation to participate in continuing education (MPCE) and its demographic relevance, highlighting age-specific work context influences and providing evidence for older workers’ heterogeneity. The literature overview delineates older workers’ demographic relevance as well as their transition to retirement, work motivation, development opportunities, and education. Second, the analysis of cross-sectional data establishes the relevance of older workers’ MPCE for the policy of prolonging working life by showing the positive relationship with work ability and the desire to work past retirement age. Older workers’ MPCE is high across all respondent groups, implying that inequalities in participation are less a result of varying motivation among subgroups, but of other barriers. Following this, work context-related motivational differences between older and younger workers are identified and analysed. Results show weak but significant influences of some work context factors. The analysis of longitudinal data shows ageing workers’ increasing heterogeneity of life satisfaction and satisfaction with work, family life, and health, corroborating life-span theories. In sum, MPCE is high among older workers. It is influenced by work context, and positively related to work ability and the desire to work past retirement age. Common mean-level analyses of older workers yield only limited informative value.

Abstract:
In view of levelling the playing field between foreign and local employers in the host country, the European Commission proposed in March 2016 to revise the Posting of Workers Directive (PWD) 96/71/EC. The amended PWD (EU) 2018/957, that was adopted mid-2018, introduces some significant changes in order to combat the shortcomings resulting from the original PWD, strengthening the importance of ensuring fair competition (between local and foreign employers) and improving the protection of workers. In a nutshell, the PWD aims at promoting the principle of equal pay for equal work in the same place, especially by extending the so-called hard nucleus of working conditions and introducing a provision for long-term postings. This new legislation will be implemented throughout the EU as of mid-2020. The following article aims to investigate the extent to which the changes demand national implementation from an Austrian point-of-view; the latter could serve as a guidance.
