Abstract:
This chapter describes the history and current status of workers’ compensation programs in the United States. Workers’ compensation, the oldest social insurance system in the United States, was designed to provide medical and cash benefits to people with work-related injuries and illnesses while protecting employers from liability. Primarily established state by state, these programs vary significantly among jurisdictions. The chapter explores several disturbing themes: the failure of these systems to provide benefits for many occupationally caused injuries and illnesses; the questionable adequacy of benefit levels; confusion and humiliation of applicants; and the recurring political issue of fraud. The chapter also briefly describes the relationship of workers’ compensation programs with other disability and health insurance systems, employment relations, and workplace safety regulation. It closes with questions about the future of workers’ compensation in the United States.

Abstract:
Electoral malpractices are commonly thought to occur in polling stations. This chapter makes the normative case for electoral management bodies (EMBs) around the world routinely using poll worker surveys. These surveys provide concrete sources of information about the extent and nature of any problems in the electoral process. Accusations by partisan actors can therefore be readily tested and challenged. Poll worker surveys can therefore increase the transparency of EMBs and the electoral process. They also increase opportunities for evidence based policy making in electoral management. Their usefulness is demonstrated through the first-ever non-US poll worker survey which was undertaken in Britain at the 2015 general election. This survey (n = 1,321) contradicted the existing literature on electoral administration in Britain in a number of ways.

Abstract:
Despite the large and growing representation of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) workers, this minority group has received relatively less attention in the management and organization literature compared with other minority groups. This is a critical time in history for LGBT workers in that public opinion has become much more favorable regarding homosexuality. The US Supreme Court has made important decisions concerning gay marriage; and although there is still no comprehensive antidiscrimination legislation at the federal level, a recent executive order provides employment protections for federal LGBT workers. This chapter reviews the literature on the workplace experiences of LGBT workers with a focus on synthesizing findings across studies, addressing research trends at different levels of analysis, and providing recommendations for areas for future research.
