Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to propose and predict an improved model for antecedents to work group productivity. Design/methodology/approach The Campion work group effectiveness model (CWGEM) provides a wide variety of variables or constructs to predict and measure the effectiveness of a team, but suffers from limitations. This paper introduces social value orientation (SVO) and suggests its potential utility as an alternative conceptualization of certain portions of CWGEM, which, based on the literature reviewed, has the potential to explain differences in social support, workload sharing and communication and cooperation within groups, resulting in one measure more efficiently replacing three. Findings A series of testable propositions offering revisions to CWGEM is presented, along with special consideration for the inclusion of SVO as a predictor of work group outcomes. This paper expands on a theoretically developed empirical model that can predict differences in work group production. Research limitations/implications The revision to CWGEM presented here requires empirical validation, but work group conflict could benefit from an additional factor that explains interpersonal conflict, as SVO does. Originality/value The authors’ primary contribution is offering a revision to CWGEM that could provide an improved explanation for differences in work group productivity using SVO and a model that could result in a more efficient and better measure.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to integrate work values research with the Job Demands–Resources model to assess the role that work value orientations play in self-employed workers’ subjective well-being. Design/methodology/approach The paper analyzes unique data on freelancers participating in an online labor market (n=9,984). Findings Intrinsic work values are associated with greater subjective well-being, whereas extrinsic work values are associated with lower subjective well-being. Consistent with the buffer hypothesis, intrinsic work value orientation reduces the negative effect of working hours on worker’s well-being, and extrinsic orientation enhances the negative effect. Originality/value This paper calls into question the importance of working conditions relative to worker values when assessing the role that job demands and resources play in the new economy. As work becomes more demanding and employment relations more flexible, personal resources such as work value orientations may become increasingly important for worker’s well-being.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relation among work values and protean and boundaryless career orientations. Design/methodology/approach A sample of 238 employees aged 16 to 65 years from the French-speaking region of Switzerland completed two different work values scales as well as protean and boundaryless career attitudes scales. To assess the relationships among these constructs, correlations, multiple regression, and exploratory factorial analysis techniques were used. Findings Results suggested that protean and boundaryless career orientations were significantly positively related to intrinsic, social, and status work values. A boundaryless-organizational mobility orientation was significantly negatively associated with extrinsic/material work values. Research limitations/implications Results have important implications for understanding which work values are typically endorsed by people with a protean or a boundaryless career orientation. Originality/value The present study contributes to the understanding of protean and boundaryless careers by clarifying the relationships among these career orientations and work values.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the understanding of Swedish school leaders’ relational and management work orientation, in terms of both techno and socio structure dimensions. The background is the neoliberal policy regime, underpinned by OECD and PISA, and an increased focus on school leaders’ management work. Design/methodology/approach In total, 26 school leaders in a Swedish municipality were interviewed, and their responses were analysed to score their expressed orientations in terms of techno structure (object and formal) and socio structure (person and symbolic) dimensions. Findings The school leaders had predominantly formal work orientations, expressed in comments about organising teams, scheduling teacher meetings, shaping working routines in meetings, making plans and (in some cases) creating an infrastructure. Scores for object (goal and result) and symbolic dimensions of their management orientation were low. Practical implications The results suggest a need to increase Swedish school leaders’ attention to object aspects, and both person and symbolic aspects of the formal or organising dimension, of their work. They also indicate the importance of establishing and communicating core symbols in compulsory schooling, like democracy and equity, to avoid external accountability pressures instrumentally shaping schools’ management. Originality/value In contrast to previous research, the analysis indicates that Swedish school leaders have a predominantly formal and organising work orientation, frequently with little clear goal and results orientation, or attention to professional needs and motivations of the teachers (important aspects of person orientation).

Abstract:
There are multiple aspects of the importance of work: economic, social, psychological, pedagogical and the like. Above all, work enables the existance of the individual and those who depend on her/him. In addition, work provides social interaction of individuals with their colleagues, it represents the source of social status and prestige, and also has a very high intrinsic value for individuals as a source of identity, self-esteem and self-actualisation. Work is therefore a central human value and one of the key factors for the individual development within the society. The article defines basic concepts and terms in the filed of work pedagogy, such as: work, pedagogical value of work, professional values, job satisfaction and preoccupation with work, work attitude, professional development and career guidance. Based on the outcomes of scientific research on work attitude, it can be relatively easy to predict the economic prosperity of a particular state, to update the relations between ethnic and ethical aspects of work, to use the therapeutic role of work in the communes for addicts which act on a maxim ''ora et labora'', analyse career guidance, retraining and further education needs (which are very important for individual and social development), alienation of people in the labour process (some sociologists consider work utilitarism as a distinguishing mark of worker alienation), work stimulation (every from of work attitude should be stimulated adquately, otherwise there will be no increasing work productivity). Thus it is also possible to recognise creative tasks and individuals (self-actualisation orientation isa a significant indicator of professions which are an expression of creativity), the role of spare time in the process of (dis)alienation from work and to predict social changes as well as the effectiveness of various reforms (in fossilised work attitude and education one cannot expect any progress in proposed reforms).

Abstract:
This paper provides an overview of the long and vigorous efforts made in the development, applications, and contributions of the Value Orientation Inventory (VOI) by Dr. Catherine D. Ennis, her students, and her colleagues. After a brief review of the development, validation, and cross-validation of the VOI and corresponding applications, the authors describe the contributions the VOI made in pedagogy research and the impact of teachers’ value orientations on their teaching behaviors. They also discuss how a measurement tool should be developed and present Ennis’s work as a model of how a research line should be established. Finally, they reflect on the limitations in measurement tool development in kinesiology and outline future directions for VOI revision and application.

Abstract:
Purpose An increasing number of students delay graduation or graduate without a job, because they are not ready to make a career decision. In addition, the growing number of young adults who are not in education, employment or training (NEET) has become a social concern in South Korea. To facilitate career decision-making of undergraduates, this study examined the effects of work value orientation and academic major orientation on career decision-making self-efficacy (CDMSE). The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationships among South Korean undergraduates’ intrinsic work value orientation, extrinsic work value orientation, academic major satisfaction and CDMSE. Design/methodology/approach Based on the literature review, this study tested a research model using structural equation modeling with survey results of 217 undergraduates. Findings The research results indicated that intrinsic work value orientation influenced academic major satisfaction and CDMSE. However, extrinsic work value orientation turned out to influence neither academic major satisfaction nor CDMSE. Academic major satisfaction also seemed to affect the CDMSE of the students in this study. Originality/value This study contributes to the field of career development by explaining the significance of undergraduates’ intrinsic work value orientation and academic major satisfaction on career decision-making. Whereas most research has focused on the effects of CDMSE, this study investigated the factors that influence undergraduates’ CDMSE.

Abstract:
The purpose of this behavioural strategy study is to investigate how seasoned executives enact their personal values in real-life organizational decision-making. The significance of this article is linking the personal values of executives with actual leadership decisions they made. In focus groups, strategic leaders with an Outer Directed (OD) or Inner Directed (ID) values orientation were prompted to reflect on their decisions at work. Analysis of the coded transcripts revealed the four independent raters, reliably categorized coding events, according to a Maslovian coding framework, r = 0.81 for ID transcripts and r = 0.76 for OD transcripts. Further statistical analysis found significant differences between executives’ values orientation (ID or OD) and values decisions (ID or OD), demonstrating a consistent pattern of ID and OD decision-making. Qualitative analyses revealed that ID participants’ decisions were based on innovation, intrinsic value and interdependency, while OD participants’ decisions were based on effectiveness, performance and affective independence. Implications for researchers include advancing the efficacy of a behavioural strategy approach, support for Maslow’s motivational theory and decision-making being consistent with personal values in an organizational context. Implications for practioners include a predictable values-based pattern to managers’ decisions and the need for a personal values-based leadership-strategy match.

Abstract:
In this thesis I interrogate the possibility of 'willing and social' work participation in industrial organisation. I draw on Habermas's (1976, 1979, 1984 & 1987) work to synthesise marxist and weberian ideas, and to derive a socio -cultural or cultural Marxist perspective on Capitalism. From this position I highlight the limitations of social action in theories of organisation and work. Moreover, I theoretically derive a model of work participation that acknowledges broader orientations to work. I interrogate that model of work participation in a study of four dominant forms of industrial organisation. Those organisations are SEQEB the South East Queensland Energy Board, Eagle Boy Pizzas in Queensland, the New South Sugar Milling Cooperative Ltd, and Budge -Ellis Staff Co-operative. Gathering data for this study involved both primary and secondary research. I used a comparative and longitudinal field research approach, unstructured interviews with an interview guide, and the collection of documents recommended by interviewees. I interviewed people working in the organisations and relevant government agencies. My research involved travel in Queensland and New South Wales, Australia. Ultimately, I produce a sociologically informed model for the establishment of 'willing and social' work participation. I conclude work participation exists within the context of capitalism, and social relations - either formally free or free; that work participation is directly influenced by rational configurations of the world of work comprising economic, political and social worldviews; and I argue the dominance of a worldview depends on whether the political action premises of buffering and shoring successfully neutralise competing worldviews; and whether the moral dictums or espoused values of work are prescribed or invoked and result in the exploitation or deployment of internal values. My thesis points in the direction of further work on co-operative forms of organisation and work and their commonweal ideologies. In particular, my findings demonstrate a crowding out of co-operative forms and ideologies, not only by capitalist forms but also by trade union collectives. The type of research I suggest has the potential to increase the legitimation of co-operative forms of organisation. Although, the Australian co-operative movement has many achievements there remains the problem of establishing a socially progressive rationality that makes practical or operational sense to people at work. The emancipator ideal of willing and social work participation is intended to epitomise the goals of the enlightenment project, and to lead in that direction.

The aim of the study was to evaluate positive and negative interaction of work and family domains and its’ relations with job satisfaction and value orientations. The subjects of the study were 208 men and women from Kaunas, Vilnius and Prienai towns and districts. All participants were currently working and had a spouse/partner and/or children. Abstract:
The purpose of this work is to study the psychological resources that promote the development for fast reemployment. We applied a comparative approach between two phases: the before and after of University to Work Transition (STWT). The goal is to see how these resources develop throughout the transition. The research took place in Tunisia. Our study focuses on young gradudates of higher education suffering from low employability and high unemployment rate that complicates their reemployment. These students pursue studies in Humanities and Social Sciences, Literature, Economics, and Law. Two groups are considered: A group of students at the end of their university studies (before the transition) and a group of graduates in a reemployment period (after the transition). We made use of a mixed methodology articulating an exploratory qualitative study based on discourse analysis, and a quantitative empirical study. We have validated psychometric scales in the Tunisian context, such as the scale of Flourishing (Diener, 2010), the scale of Career Adpatability Short Version (CAAS-SF) (Maggiori, Rossier, & Savickas, 2017), the "Strenghts Knowledge" scale (Govindji & Linley, 2007) and the Character Strengths Inventory (VIA-72). Correlation, linear and hierarchical regression analyses and structural equation modeling using the PLS method were conducted. The results of both studies reveal that flourishing plays a significant role in developing career adaptability and rapid reemployment. Psychological resources are mobilized differently before and after the transition. The strengths of optimism contribute positively before the transition. The strenghts of wisdom, the temperance and proactive behavior promote rapid reemployment. Based on both results and the literature review, we propose a set of actions to be taken at the institutional level to promote the development and proactive behavior within academic structures. We discuss the development of support schemes for university-employment transition as part of a cross-cultural and multidisciplinary Mediterranean regional collaboration

Goal orientation is to investigate the motives or reasons for people to engage in study or work, to develop their own ability by “learning” or “performing”, and according to individual’s own ability viewed positive or negative, people are divided into four types. Four different types of people who have different cognitive and behavior in the face to challenges to learn or work, thereby affecting the performance. However, the current management of academic research are mostly goal orientation into three types, this study will use a four-dimension factor of the education sector in recent decades of the latest research results to explore. And joined the two mediate variables, Sales work value deeply affect the work motivation of the individual, and feedback-seeking is impact deeply on individual performance. Further whether to search the different goal orientation people of different work value and feedback-seeking behavior, thereby affecting the performance of individual sales. In this study, the survey was a securities salesperson, and used a questionnaire survey, based on convenience sampling method, the securities company issued a total of 450 questionnaires were collected 350 questionnaires, valid questionnaires was 335, the effective recovery rate of 74.4%.Used structural equation modeling of AMOS statistical software to verify the research model. The results are (1) The salespeople who to hold mastery-approach goal orientation was positively related to the sale work value;(2) The salespeople who to hold performance-approach goal orientation was positively related to the sale work value;(3) The salespeople who to hold mastery-approach goal orientation was positively related to the feedback seeking;(4) The salespeople who to hold performance-approach goal orientation was positively related to thefeedback-seeking;(5) The sale work value was positively related to sales performance;(6) The feedback-seeking was positively related to sales performance.

The research documented personality traits, work value and career orientation of generation Y serving in the international tourist hotels in Taipei, and examined the relationships between their personal characteristics with each of the variables and the interactions among the variables themselves. The sample consisted of 337 generation Y hotel staff, who were born after 1980 and completed the self-report questionnaire with Likert Scale. The data was computed with SPSS. The main findings are specified as followings: 1.As to personality traits, most of generation Y’s more intend to ‘introvert’; to the work value, they regard ‘esteem’ as the most important factor; and to career orientation, they are inclined to ‘start one’s own business’. 2.Using Correlation Analysis, it is found significantly positive or negative correlations emerging between the pairs of personality traits, work value and career orientation. 3.By the technique of Regression Analysis, ‘the introvert’ is found with positive prediction to work value and career orientation. The ‘esteem’, ‘organization assurance’ and ‘self-actualization’ are seen with predicting effect to career orientation.

Abstract:
This book examines whether or not the youth employment strategies practiced in the high efficiency and expanding economies of the United States and Germany can be adopted successfully in the Mediterranean countries of Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece and (southern) France, countries where youth face significant obstacles to employment. A distinguishing feature in the approach taken here is the importance placed on national culture, i.e., shared values and preferences with intergenerational sustainability that can have economic consequences. Like many other books on this subject the importance of the institutions and policies that underpin “free market capitalism” are discussed but an effort has been made to place these institutions and policies within a broader cultural and historical context. In the spirit of the pioneering work of Max Weber and the more recent contributions in the rapidly expanding sub-field of cultural economics, this book attempts to identify the elements of national value orientation that can facilitate or impede the adoption of new technologies, policies or institutional forms. It is the book’s contention, its overall thesis if you will, that a failure to correctly identify these value orientations will likely result in incomplete adoption and low levels of diffusion.

Abstract:
The emergence of this handbook on social justice represents a groundbreaking event in the history of social psychology. In this summary discussion, I outline significant limits to social justice work embedded in the empiricist tradition of inquiry and point to ways in which the current work transcends these limits. However, I also view the present endeavors as in a fledgling state. In the service of enriching and rendering these pursuits more effective, I discuss five domains in which tensions currently prevail and suggest directions for future undertakings. Challenges are discussed in terms of epistemological schisms, presumed ontologies, value pluralism, explanatory paradigms, and the limits of representationalism. A final invitation is made to shift from a mirroring orientation to research to world-making.

Abstract:
This chapter critically evaluates treatments for internalizing and externalizing disorders in ethnic minority youth based on empirically supported treatment criteria and the methodological robustness of the scientific evidence. There continues to be no well-established treatment for externalizing or internalizing disorders in ethnic minority youth. There continues to be no evidence that treatments are robust across cultures and subcultures, and there is a lack of attention to explanatory variables (e.g., acculturation, cultural orientation, values). In the meantime, an articulation for providers is suggested based on data about putative mediators of change and best practices for working in the contexts of cultural diversity. For researchers, the chapter articulates four avenues believed to be the core to advancing treatment science for ethnic minority youth.

It uses empirical material to develop understanding of how capabilities that are linked to experiences of energy deprivation are shaped by (non-energy) policy. Within this, the chapter explores the potential for the invisible energy policy orientation to advance existing work related to the ways that wider discourses and framings shape experiences of energy poverty issues. The chapter gives particular focus to the implications of relations between discourses of fuel poverty and those of broader poverty, arising from energy and welfare policy, respectively, extending analysis by exploring how such discourses act upon subjects in ways that affect possibilities for challenging conditions of energy poverty.

Abstract:
AbstractPerson-centred care (PCC) is an increasing international priority and a shift in health systems orientation and development. Innovative models are required across Europe to prototype healthcare based on health promotion and PCC to improve healthcare quality and costs containment. Regardless of the type of intervention, investments will be required, and it will be essential to demonstrate the value created, comparing consequences and the associated costs. Independent of PCC intervention, we must consider different decision levels and stakeholders in the process. This work aims to focus on a broader perspective of health governance on PCC implementations, considering the need and importance of measurement systems (outcomes and costs) to support and evaluate innovative health service delivery models. It is necessary to have a global view of the entire system considering, from a health governance perspective, the different decision-making levels, the multiple stakeholders and the alignment of their interests. Value-Based Healthcare (VBHC), Value for Money (VfM) and economic evaluation provide concepts, methodologies, and tools that can be used to compare costs and consequences evaluating their impact on society. We need accurate outcomes and costs measurement systems and evaluation tools that can be incorporated in an organizational environment supporting organizational learning and interaction in exchanging knowledge and experience about implementation.

AbstractRecent years have seen the use of increasingly realistic electric field (EF) models to further our knowledge of the bioelectric basis of noninvasive brain techniques such as transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). Such models predict a poor spatial resolution of tDCS, showing a non-focal EF distribution with similar or even higher magnitude values far from the presumed targeted regions, thus bringing into doubt the classical criteria for electrode positioning. In addition to magnitude, the orientation of the EF over selected neural targets is thought to play a key role in the neuromodulation response. This chapter offers a summary of recent works which have studied the effect of simulated EF magnitude and orientation in tDCS, as well as providing new results derived from an anatomically representative parcellated brain model based on finite element method (FEM). The results include estimates of mean and peak tangential and normal EF values over different cortical regions and for various electrode montages typically used in clinical applications.

AbstractThere is an increased interest, in the field of cardiac modeling, for an improved coordinate system that can consistently describe local position within a heart geometry across various distinct geometries. A newly designed coordinate system, Cobiveco, meets these requirements. However, it assumes the use of biventricular models with a flat base, ignoring important cardiac structures. Therefore, we extended the scope of this state-of-the-art biventricular coordinate system to work with various heart geometries which include basal cardiac structures that were previously unaccounted for in Cobiveco. First, we implemented a semi-automated input surface assignment for increased accessibility and reproducibility of assigned coordinates. Then, we extended the coordinate system to handle more anatomically accurate biventricular models including the valve planes, which are of great interest when modeling diseases that manifest themselves in the basal area. Furthermore, we added the functionality of mapping vector data, such as myocardial fiber orientations, which are crucial for replicating the anisotropic electrical propagation in cardiac tissue.

O'Reilly et al. (1991) defines value congruence as the match between the organization's culture and individual's values. The study is based on the same definition. It aims at determining the importance of rewards and resources for staff-members having different continuum of work values, association of work value congruence with organizational facilities, and assessing the impact of interpersonal interactional opportunity on attitudinal responses of employees. Significance of a particular aspect of job and organizational arrangements are correlated; further, significance of difference in the correlation coefficient is measured. The study reveals significant effect of work-value orientation on response to autonomy, organizational facilities, and organizational arrangements in terms of job satisfaction, citizenship and retaliatory behavior, intrinsic motivation, and job-involvement in employees. The chapter suggests that appropriate match between dominant values in individual employees and corresponding organizational arrangements is one of the significant antecedents of job satisfaction and involvement in the employees.

Abstract:
The formation of a value-patriotic orientation is considered as the most important task in the formation of the personality of cadets of military universities. In the personality structure of cadets of military universities, the defining values are: patriotism, social and political activity, desire to serve in the forces, love of sports, need for movement, interest in physical culture, hard work in physical education classes, special knowledge of physical culture, social status, perseverance in achieving goals, presence of wit, perseverance of character, sociability, the attitude of fellow students, friends among others. It is revealed that the level of sports qualifications of cadets of military universities, in comparison with low, contributes less to the formation of value-patriotic orientations according to the following parameters characterizing the personality: patriotism, social and political activity, readiness to accomplish a feat in the name of the Motherland, readiness to work in the name of the Motherland, interest in politics, desire to serve in the forces, a sense of duty and obligation to comrades, teachers. The level of sports qualifications has little impact on these values. Cadets with low sports qualifications in relation to highly qualified athletes have a greater tendency to manifest negative personal values characteristic of this group: they put their interests above others, more often get into unpleasant life situations, conflict with others and show great aggressiveness. Means of pedagogical influence should be used In the formation of positive attitudes of patriotic orientation. The paper presents a methodology for the formation of value-patriotic orientation among cadets of military universities. This methodology includes the principles, content, use of innovative forms, methods and means of pedagogical influence.

Abstract:
The purpose of this work was to determine the possible optimal cost effectiveness of various energy conservation options for new buildings in the local climate. The building energy analysis code Energy-10 was used for this purpose. Three types of savings have been evaluated: energy savings, operating cost savings, and Life-Cycle Cost (LCC) savings. To complete this study, a parametric analysis was performed on the influence on LCC savings due to variations of various individual components (including window characteristics, wall, floor, and roof constructions) and the whole-composite buildings. The initial part of the study focused on examining the impacts of individual components within the capabilities of Energy-10. For example, the impacts of a single window size, orientation, and construction were analyzed. While doing this, all of the other heat loss/heat gain paths were made negligible. Results of this aspect of the work were used to define a shorter list of components and building construction options to evaluate in the following composite-house studies. Then two general categories for the whole-composite buildings were evaluated to assist in analyzing the potential cost-effectiveness and benefits of buildings’ energy conservation options. In these studies, various energy cost escalation rates, economic life times, and replacement costs were considered. Building orientations relative the areal placement of fenestrations were also evaluated. Conclusions are given about combinations of construction elements that make the most economic sense for this rapidly growing population area. While Las Vegas climatic data are considered in this work, the conclusions are more generally applicable in the desert Southwest portion of the US.

Abstract:
A computational method to evaluate fracture toughness of prospective erosion-resistant coatings using a combination of first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations and fracture mechanics is proposed. Elastic coefficients C11, C12 and C44, the ideal work of adhesion Wad, bulk moduls B, shear moduls G, and Young’s moduls E of transition metal nitrides with a cubic structure such as TiN, CrN, ZrN, VN and HfN are calculated. Both the G/B ratio and Cauchy pressure C12-C44 indicate brittle behaviour for TiN, ZrN and HfN and more metallic behaviour for CrN and VN. The fracture toughness KIC and interfacial fracture toughness KICInt for bi-layer combinations of these five nitrides is calculated along the [100] and [110] directions. The largest KIC value is obtained for HfN (2.14 MPa·m1/2) in (100) orientation and for TiN (2.16 MPa·m1/2) in (110) orientation. The lowest fracture toughness, in both orientations, is found for CrN. Among ten coherent interfaces of the five investigated nitrides the largest value of interfacial fracture toughness, KICInt = 3.24 MPa·m1/2, is recorded for the HfN/TiN interface in the (110) orientation.

Abstract:
Orientation tensors are widely used to describe fiber distri-butions in short fiber reinforced composite systems. Although these tensors capture the stochastic nature of concentrated fiber suspensions in a compact form, the evolution equation for each lower order tensor is a function of the next higher order tensor. Flow calculations typically employ a closure that approximates the fourth-order orientation tensor as a function of the second order orientation tensor. Recent work has been done with eigen-value based and invariant based closure approximations of the fourth-order tensor. The effect of using lower order tensors tensors in process simulations by reconstructing the distribution function from successively higher order orientation tensors in a Fourier series representation is considered. This analysis uses the property that orientation tensors are related to the series expansion coefficients of the distribution function. Errors for several closures are investigated and compared with errors developed when using a reconstruction from the exact 2nd, 4th, and 6th order orientation tensors over a range of interaction coefficients from 10−4 to 10−1 for several flow fields.

Abstract:
In this work, large eddy simulation is applied to simulate cold flow in a combustor of non-premixed type. Air is introduced axially from the bottom of a cylindrical combustor whereas fuel is introduced directly in the combustion chamber. Two different geometries of fuel injection are taken which have been experimentally studied at Jadavpur University, India. Fuel is injected using two alternative orientations of the holes. In one orientation (referred to in this article as the vertical configuration), the fuel comes in vertically in parallel and counter-flow with the air stream. In the other orientation (referred to as the horizontal configuration), the fuel is injected horizontally at cross flow with the air stream. Two different kinds of dynamics have been achieved with two orientations in the experimental study [1]. In the present study, effort has been given to explore the flow behavior and mixing characteristics by simulating the combustion chamber with fuel injection similar to the experimental one. It is found that mixture fraction is more homogeneous due to the vortices formed downstream of the fuel inlet section for the horizontal configuration and also its value mostly remains in the flammability limit. As the parallel flow of fuel jet in the wake region hampers the vortex formation, convective mixing is very poor with vertical fuel injection.

Abstract Systematic experimentation was carried out on forced convection heat transfer apparatus under varying non-linear flow conditions to understand the energy transfer as heat, with the purpose of enhancing performance of numerous engineering applications. Plate orientations, types of enclosures (solid, meshed, perforated), flow velocity variations etc. are taken as governing parameters to effect convective heat transfer phenomenon which is perceived as deviations in value of heat transfer coefficient. RV zonal system is utilized to simplify the fundamental understanding of heat transfer coefficient variation with surface orientation under varying flow field. The objectives of this work are as follows: 1) To establish relative effectiveness of forced convective heat transfer under varying flow field. 2) To investigate the implications of varying shapes and sizes of perforations on confined forced convective heat transfer. Abstract:
Fiber orientation simulation is conducted for the Center-Gated-Disk (CGD) geometry and compared with experimental data. Long-fiber thermoplastic composites (LFTs) possess competitive advantages over short glass fiber composites in terms of their mechanical properties while retain the ability to be injection molded. Mechanical properties of LFTs are highly dependent on the microstructural variables imparted by the injection molding process including fiber orientation and fiber length distribution. As the fiber length increased, the mechanical properties of the composites containing discontinuous fibers can approach those of continuous fiber materials. Several researchers have reported that flexural, creep and charpy impact properties increase as fiber length increases, while tensile modulus will plateau for glass fibers above 1 mm in length. Fibers less than the 1 mm threshold have been considered to be short while fibers with lengths greater than 1 mm are considered long. For long fibers, they will have the ability to deform, bend and even break during any stage of polymer processing. There is a lack of knowledge about the effects of fiber length and fiber length variation on fiber orientation kinetics. This lack of information provides an opportunity to understand the length effect inherent to long fibers systems. The Bead-Rod fiber orientation model takes into account the flexibility of semi-flexible fibers that show small bending angles. In this model, a flexibility parameter representing the resistive bending potential is fiber length dependent (detailed explanation can be found in the reference)1. This work is concerned with the effect of fiber length on the performance of the Bead-Rod fiber orientation model which takes into account the flexibility of semi-flexible fibers. Different averaging techniques are used to represent the average fiber length for the population of fibers, which give different fiber length parameters for the Bead-Rod model. The sensitivity of the Bead-Rod model is evaluated with regard to the fiber flexibility parameter, k, and length parameter, lb. The other phenomenal parameters within the orientation model are obtained via basic rheological measurements using simple shear flow. As the value of average fiber length Lav increases and the corresponding flexibility parameter value decreases, the core regions become wider and the flow direction orientation gradually decreases especially near the walls for the Bead-Rod model predictions. In addition, as the parameters favor longer fiber lengths, the predicted extent of fiber bending increases. The simulation results are also compared with the experimental obtained fiber orientation at different flow length along the thickness direction. The Bead-Rod model shows improvement over the rigid rod model.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Toughness values of pipe steel and welds are key mechanical properties for material specification and integrity assurance. Toughness is influenced by crack size (deep vs. shallow), loading mode (bending vs. tension), crack orientation and sampled microstructure (notch location in weldments). To the best of the authors’ knowledge, no data exist in the open literature for crack orientation effects on Electric Welded (EW) welds. Charpy notch toughness and single-edge-notched bend (SE(B)) fracture toughness tests using surface-notched specimens of three modern (EW) pipe seam welds were performed at −20°C and −45°C, and the results are compared to those for through-thickness-notched (TTN) specimens. Charpy results indicated that the tests were in lower-transition or lower-shelf regions. Charpy impact V-notch absorbed energies (CVNs) of EW welds displayed large scatter; the effect of crack orientation was small. The initiation J-integral values of SE(B) surface-notched specimens were higher than those of TTN specimens, although when brittle fracture initiation occurred the effect of orientation on toughness was negligible. Note that the specimen geometry likely affects the results; surfaced-notched specimens were B×B and through-thickness-notched specimens were B×2B, although they are all standard SE(B) specimens in ASTM E1820. A limited study of geometry effects on crack-tip stress was done in the present work by Finite Element Analysis (FEA). It was found that these geometries all have similar maximum crack-tip opening stresses at the same J value although the stress gradient through the ligament and hence the constraint parameter Q (measured at a distance 2J/σy from the crack tip) and the J-Q curves differ. Thus, differences in fracture toughness values for brittle fracture would be expected to be small because cleavage is stress controlled, although ductile fracture toughness may reflect the differences in J-Q curves. There was considerable scatter in both notch toughness and fracture toughness, and much of this may be attributed to slight variations in notch or crack location with respect to the weld bond line because the toughness can vary markedly across an EW weld. The variation in location is superimposed on the variation in toughness inherent in each weld microstructure. The present data shows that the conventional use of TTN specimens is appropriate for EW weld toughness specification because toughness in this orientation is either equivalent to or lower than the toughness of surface-notched specimens (i.e. it is conservative).

Abstract:
This work presents a computational study of a two-blade and a three-blade Savonius vertical axis wind turbines. The two-blade turbine was considered to be oriented at 0, 45, 90, and 135 degrees in reference to the direction of the prevailing wind. For the three-blade turbine, the orientations taken into account were 0, 30, 60, and 90 degrees in reference to the direction of the prevailing wind. The basic aim of this work was to study how the two designs are different from each other in terms of the forces acting on their blades. The computational simulations considered the turbines to be subjected to constant wind velocities of 5, 10, 20, and 30 m/s. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analyses were conducted for every case to find out the forces acting on the turbine blades for each orientation. All cases were run using “transition-SST” flow model and the turbine blades were meshed using ‘Quadrilateral Pave’ meshing scheme. Maximum change in pressure on the turbine blade occurs when the two-blade turbine is perpendicular to direction of the prevailing wind, i.e. at 90 degree. On the other hand, when three-blade turbine is at 60 degree orientation, maximum change is pressure occurs on the turbine blade. For the dimensions selected in this study (each blade having a radius of 0.3 m and height of 0.6 m) the maximum net forces on the two-blade turbine was calculated to be 298 N, while this value was 210 N on the three-blade turbine.

Abstract:
Modern applications of short-fiber composite materials demand accurate characterization of their macroscopic thermal properties. Many physical and microstructural factors influence the effective thermal conductivity of a composite material body. The objective of the current work is to investigate the influence of the microstructure configuration on the effective conductivity of a parallelepipedonal-cell composite containing equal-sized short fibers; the orientation and aspect ratio of the fibers are varied. The possible presence of voids in the matrix or of an interfacial thermal resistance between the constituent phases are not considered. A previous continuous formulation and computational implementation of heat conduction in a statistically homogeneous and periodic composite material are employed. The approach is based on the application of homogenization theory to the variational form of the original heat conduction boundary value problem for the multiscale composite medium. The variational form is well suited for subsequent numerical solution by the finite element method. The expression for the composite effective conductivity is here computed for several parallelepipedonal-cell microstructures. The numerical results are critically compared with available experimental data for short-fiber composites, and indications for important future research efforts are drawn.

Abstract:
Over the last two decades, an increasing number of highway construction and maintenance projects in the United States have been completed at night to avoid or alleviate traffic congestion delays. Working at night entails several advantages, including lower traffic volumes, less impact on local businesses, cooler temperatures for equipment and material, and fewer overall crashes. Although nighttime roadway operations may minimize traffic disruptions, there are several safety concerns about passing motorists and workers in the nighttime work zone. For instance, improper lighting arrangements or excessive lighting levels at the job site could cause harmful levels of glare for the traveling public and workers, which can lead to an increased level of hazards and crashes in the vicinity of the work zone. To address the issue of glare, the current report focuses on determining and evaluating disability glare on nighttime work zones in order to develop appropriate strategies for improving the safety of workers and motorists during nighttime highway construction and maintenance projects. Disability glare is the glare that impairs our vision of objects without necessarily causing discomfort, and it can be evaluated using the veiling luminance ratio (VL ratio). In this study, disability glare values were determined by using lighting data (vertical illuminance and pavement luminance measurements) from the testing of 49 lighting arrangements. Two LED balloon lights, a metal-halide light tower, and an LED light tower were utilized for the field lighting experiments. The glare assessment analyzed the effects of the lighting system setup’s parameters, such as the mounting height, power output, rotation angle, and aiming angle of luminaires on the veiling luminance ratio values (which is a criterion for limiting disability glare). The study revealed the following key findings: (1) an increase in mounting heights of both balloon lights and light towers resulted in lower disability glare levels; (2) compared to the "perpendicular" and "away" orientations, orienting the light towers "towards" the traffic (45 degrees) significantly increases the disability glare levels of the lighting arrangement; and (3) increasing the tilt angles of portable light tower luminaries resulted in an increase in disability glare levels.

Marshall, Amber, Krystle Turner, Carol Richards, Marcus Foth, Michael Dezuanni, and Tim Neale. A case study of human factors of digital AgTech adoption: Condamine Plains, Darling Downs. Queensland University of Technology, December 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.5204/rep.eprints.227177.

Abstract:
As global agricultural production methods and supply chains have become more digitised, farmers around the world are adopting digital AgTech such as drones, Internet of Things (IoT), remote sensors, blockchain, and satellite imagery to inform their on-farm decision-making. While early adopters and technology advocates globally are spruiking and realising the benefits of digital AgTech, many Australian farmers are reluctant or unable to participate fully in the digital economy. This is an important issue, as the Australian Government has said that digital farming is essential to meeting its target of agriculture being a $100billion industry by 2030. Most studies of AgTech adoption focus on individual-level barriers, yielding well-documented issues such as access to digital connectivity, availability of AgTech suppliers, non-use of ICTs, and cost-benefit for farmers. In contrast, our project took an ‘ecosystems’ approach to study cotton farmers in the Darling Downs region in Queensland, Australia who are installing water sensors, satellite imagery, and IoT plant probes to generate data to be aggregated on a dashboard to inform decision-making. We asked our farmers to map their local ecosystem, and then set up interviewing different stakeholders (such technology providers, agronomists, and suppliers) to understand how community-level orientations to digital agriculture enabled and constrained on-farm adoption. We identified human factors of digital AgTech adoption at the macro, regional and farm levels, with a pronounced ‘data divide’ between farm and community level stakeholders within the ecosystem. This ‘data divide’ is characterised by a capability gap between the provision of the devices and software that generate data by technology companies, and the ability of farmers to manage, implement, use, and maintain them effectively and independently. In the Condamine Plains project, farmers were willing and determined to learn new, advanced digital and data literacy skills. Other farmers in different circumstances may not see value in such an undertaking or have the necessary support to take full advantage of the technologies once they are implemented. Moreover, there did not seem to be a willingness or capacity in the rest of the ecosystem to fill this gap. The work raises questions about the type and level of new, digital expertise farmers need to attain in the transition to digital farming, and what interventions are necessary to address the significant barriers to adoption and effective use that remain in rural communities. By holistically considering how macro- and micro-level factors may be combined with community-level influences, this study provides a more complete and holistic account of the contextualised factors that drive or undermine digital AgTech adoption on farms in rural communities. This report provides insights and evidence to inform strategies for rural ecosystems to transition farms to meet the requirements and opportunities of Agriculture 4.0 in Australia and abroad.

Abstract:
Training cadets-weightlifters at all stages has a multipurpose orientation, that is why it is important to define and plan a rational combination of the training means use. Distribution of such micro structures in the cycle of training, as the days, months of training, provides effective volume, intensity and other values of physical load distribution. The structure of training cadets-weightlifters is based on taking into account the regularities and principles of sports training as the condition for physical readiness and working capacity increase. Any power oriented sports demands components characteristics in the structure of micro cycles. We consider the methodology of the training lessons organization by the example of the micro cycle of training taking into account bioenergetic profile of cadets-weightlifters. We revealed the necessity to distribute the macro cycle to structural components as the condition for the effectiveness of different variants of the training effects distribution. Materials and methods. We analyzed the range of training lessons among cadets-weightlifters in order to create the variants of gradual training problems solution according to the kinds of training. We analyzed training programs of cadets taking into consideration the level of readiness and their bioenergetic profiles. We created the content of the training work in the micro cycle of the preparatory period for cadets-weightlifters with different bioenergetic profiles. The main material of the research includes the ratio of the training effects volume in one micro cycle taking into account cadets’ bioenergetic profile. Cadets-weightlifters from Tyumen Higher Military-Engineering Command College (military Institute) took part in the research (Tyumen, Russia). Results. We created the content of the training work by the example of one micro cycle for cadets-weightlifters taking into account bioenergetic profile. The created variant of the training loads structure includes the main means of training taking into account the kind of training. Realization orientation in five regimens of work fulfillment with the effectiveness estimation of a total load within one lesson and a week in general is estimated according to a point system. Conclusion. The created variant of a micro cycle considers kinds of training realization taking into account the percentage of the ratio. Taking into account bioenergetic profiles helps to discuss strong and weak sides of muscle activity energy supply mechanisms. We consider the ability to fulfill a long-term aerobic load among the representatives of the 1st and the 2nd bioenergetic profiles. The representatives of the 3rd and the 4th biotype are inclined to fulfill the mixed load. The representatives of the 5th biotype are characterized by higher degree of anaerobic abilities demonstration. The technology of planning the means taking into account the regimens of work realization with point system helps to increase physical working capacity and rehabilitation processes in cadets’ organisms.
