Abstract:
A small but growing body of research on organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) and objective career outcomes highlights the need for more consistency across studies. This chapter critically examines extant literature and highlights key issues in current research. More specifically, we identify three main issues in the current literature. First, many OCB studies do not include a corollary measure of task behavior. Second, there seems to be an assumption that performance evaluations are positively related to objective career outcomes. Third, it is important to acknowledge that studying reward recommendations is not the same as studying actual rewards. Following discussion of these three issues, we then review the studies on OCB and various objective career outcomes (i.e., productivity, salary and financial rewards, other rewards, promotion and career advancement); point out patterns and trends across the studies; and make recommendations for how the field can move forward in terms of future research directions.

Abstract:
Work is essential to healthy and adaptive human psychological functioning. The work ethic couples work and reward in order to endow work with meaning. The healthy workplace supports relationships and behaviors that promote a strong work ethic and cohesive group function such that the overall goals of the workplace can be accomplished and the mental health of the individual workers is enhanced. This book describes key drivers that disrupt the workplace environment and provides strategies and tools to address problematic behaviors and emotions that place the mental health of employees at risk and reduce the effectiveness of the organization. These tools can help managers, employees, and company leaders to optimize work functioning and informs mental health professionals who treat employees in distress.

Abstract:
This final chapter presents choice from a “systems” perspective by describing a process model for consumer choice. In this model, we argue that a consumer-oriented organizational mindset, coupled with incentives that reward healthcare producers for enhanced consumer choice, are the combination of environmental conditions most likely to lead to change. We highlight the roles that healthcare providers, insurers, and government—as well as consumers—can play to make consumer choice work. Finally, we reprise why consumer choice is important. We take the position that increased consumer choice by itself will not fix the American healthcare system but is one of several changes that could make it better. We conclude that more consumer-oriented experimentation is needed and propose a way forward using a funding mechanism that has worked well in creating breakthrough solutions for the U.S. military.

Unwin, Lorna. Employer-Led In-Work Training and Skill Formation. Edited by John Buchanan, David Finegold, Ken Mayhew, and Chris Warhurst. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199655366.013.11.

Abstract:
This chapter examines skill formation organized by employers in the workplace. Its starting point is that all types of work involve knowledge and skill and, therefore, all workplaces are potential learning environments. The chapter discusses developments in workplace learning theory as well as the international empirical evidence on employer attitudes to and investment in in-work training. Illustrations from case study research are provided. It argues that workplace learning is contingent on the level of interaction of individuals with the way work is organized and managed, the nature of the employment contract including reward and incentive structures, the level of discretion employees have to determine how they work, and the extent to which employees are involved in decision making. The chapter concludes with recommendations for policy and practice.
