Abstract:
The increase in the pace of life is becoming very tangible yet it is not visible to us in a qualitative way. Technological advancements offer us a life without friction where we can go full speed, but with this change we lose our windows for reflection and slowing down. Our pace is mostly determined by people or machines around us and we rarely have a chance to listen to our own rhythm, users and designers alike. With this project, the sustainability of the human being was questioned, particularly in the work life, where our pace is the highest. An exploratory and partially critical approach was engaged in the process and different methodologies have been explored. The result, a system of objects, aim to visualize one’s pace while criticizing the frictionless environments we create as designers.

Full text
Abstract:
By extending thinking beyond the prescriptive perspectives of current change literature, the organisational principle of rapid change is challenged by the virtues of paced and scheduled change. The research explores how a large UK government organisation copes with radical structural change over time and provides an insight into the temporal effects of 'Enforced Accelerated Work Pace' on behaviour and receptivity within an organisational context. More specifically the research focuses on the negative response behaviour of change, particularly when the change includes radical structural modifications. It considers the effects of time-pacing and scheduling of change initiatives on behaviour; and the failure risk of change initiatives in human terms as a consequence of negative response behaviour borne out of pace and scheduling mismanagement. Change justification and content are well researched, rehearsed and accepted but the temporal and situational aspects of change have largely been ignored by the researchers of the past. Furthermore, there is a distinct absence of strong social and psychological theorising in respect of change receptivity linked to the pace and rate of change, a view well documented by Pettigrew et al. (2001). This research, in the main is not one of understanding cause and effect or starting with a priori hypothesis relating to existing theory. It is the interpretation of human behaviours within a specific context with the explicit aim of developing theories and concepts in the substantive area. Therefore the underlying logic of the research is grounded theory building, a general method that works well with qualitative data collection approaches which involves inducting insights from field based, case data. The emerging insight linked fatigue with poorly managed change rather than just the levels or indeed the type of change as was originally expected. More importantly there is great emphasis on the temporal effects of 'Enforced Accelerated Work Pace' . 'Temporal Sensitivity', the duration of the changes to work patterns played a big part in behavioural responses contributing to the development of the Coping Reflex Stage model. The research also led to the development of the 'Adverse Effect Index' (AEI); a model that brings together the main elements that appear to contribute to the sense of weariness, brought on by 'Enforced Accelerated Work Pace' and presents them in a meaningful way. The development of the model provides for an effective indicator of individuals suffering the effects of change fatigue. Developing perspectives on work pace measurement is difficult particularly when the work output is not easily quantifiable, nevertheless an extension to the AEI model led to developing perspectives on work pace measurement. Termed the' Apparent Work Pace' (A WP) the measure is presented as a real number between 1.0 and 2.0 to represent a moderately slow pace to a much faster pace respectively.

Skogsberg, Zara. "Investigation of the Impact on Yeast Fermentation Performance in Production of Pale Lager Beer through Management Control." Thesis, Linköpings universitet, Teknisk biologi, 2013. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-100150.

Full text
Abstract:
Through a full factorial design experiment, the effects of time between worts, wort aeration and yeast dosage in production of a pale lager beer were examined in the beer process at Spendrups Bryggeri AB. The aim was to learn how different parameters may affect the yeast fermentation performance during beer production. Response variables used were the concentrations of ethyl acetate and isoamyl acetate, free amino nitrogen (FAN) degradation and change in extract. A statistical analysis showed that the concentration of ethyl acetate is dependent on yeast dosage and the interaction between time between worts and aeration while the isoamyl acetate concentration is dependent on yeast dosage and time between worts. No parameters are statistically significant for FAN degradation while the change in extract is dependent on the yeast dosage. Due to botched runs, mostly because of aeration problems, it was not possible to verify theoretical parameter values and responses. Since the aeration was not properly performed, the management of the aeration control should be further investigated. Ester analysis and analysis of FAN were performed as worts entered and exited horizontal fermentation tanks. An additional analysis of ester content was also performed as the early stage beer was transferred into lagering tanks. Cell viability as well as extract, pH and tank temperature was measured daily to verify the state of fermentation. Statistical calculations showed that when using NucleoCounter YC-100, there is no significant difference between analysis made of samples homogenized by a magnetic stirrer and samples shaken by hand.

Bouraoui, Jihene. "The power of negativity and its functioning in the metafictional text through five works : vladimir Nabokov’s Pale Fire, John Barth’s Coming Soon!!!, Graham Swift’s Waterland, Robert Coover’s Gerald’s Party and Don DeLillo’s White Noise." Thesis, Paris 10, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012PA100139.

Full text
Abstract:
The dissertation addresses the challenge to think the power of negativity and its ultimate constructive objective. It launches an enterprise, both at the textual and extratexual levels, that requires the individual to destroy and create at once, without any pretention to establish an everlasting system that dictates the encoding and decoding of thoughts and perception and management of cognitive, bodily and everyday life needs. Such an enterprise is based on the consideration of a literary assemblage of five novels: Vladimir Nabokov’s Pale Fire, John Barth’s Coming Soon!!!, Graham Swift’s Waterland, Robert Coover’s Gerald’s Party and Don Delillo’s White Noise. It demonstrates that the text is governed by an economy that does not embark on « negative » nihilism; it is rather an economy that transforms the unproductive forms (abyss, loss, spectre, madness, excess, death) into a capacity for resistance and a creative departure. It is an economy that sustains the text and prevents it from collapsing, through a set of ethical imperatives, a poetics of self-creation and a politics whose objective is not to resolve the paradoxes underlying the text. Throughout the three part of the dissertation, there is a continuous struggle to unveil the constructs and to explain the rationale behind our unavoidable need for them to keep going

Abstract:

This paper focuses on leadership problems and possibilities regarding creativity in a specific R&D organization. This is done with the help of a model consisting of four domains of special interest for R&D leaders. A survey in the form of personal interviews was conducted with leaders and staff members of two R&D sections in the organization. The analysis pointed towards problems on work load and stress issues. Furthermore the organizational structure of the two sections provided a discussion on optimal structural build‐up in order to maximize creativity. Trust issues arose because of the apparent use of control by upper management as described by lower level leaders and the employees. Indications showed that the trust issues put up obstacles for learning and dealing with failure. On the other hand the relationships between section management and staff were perceived as good. Also the ground works of a good creative work was laid with the trusting relationships between fellow professionals within the group.

With the transition into the Internet era, our lifestyles have changed, and so have our sources of tour information. National Palace Museum (NPM) is a symbolic tourist attraction in Taiwan. As TripAdvisor.com is currently the largest trip advises provider in the world, this study used the web content mining technique to extract positive and negative views shared by NPM visitors on this website and convert them into mood indicators of satisfaction. Through one-way ANOVA, Scheffe post-hoc comparison, and regression analysis of data on SPSS 20.0, this study further examined how the mood indicators are related to overall satisfaction and revisiting intention among NPM visitors from four continents. A total of 2047 comments over three years were collected. After combination by continent, 487 datasets were obtained. The main findings were as follows: (1) NPM visitors come from a wide range of countries and most of them show a positive attitude toward its collection, food and beverages, and gifts. A higher proportion of their negative word-of-mouth communications are associated with noisiness and crowdedness in the environment. (2) There are significant differences in eight mood indicators of satisfaction between NPM visitors from different continents. (3) Six mood indicators of satisfaction are related to overall satisfaction, and among them, “feeling of tranquility” is the most significant one. (4) The sum of all mood indicators is positively related to overall satisfaction, which is also positively related to revisiting intention. Hence, the authority concerned is suggested to make improvements in aspects that visitors are unsatisfied with. Increased visitor satisfaction can lead to higher international transparency and promote development of the entire tour industry in Taiwan.

Non-profit organizations grow rapidly in recent years, and volunteers play an increasingly important role in these non-profit organizations, especially in the museums where there is a great need for large number of volunteers. In this thesis the volunteers of Taipei Fine Arts Museum (TFAM) and National Palace Museum (NPM) are the subjects of our study. A total 350 questionnaires were sent to the volunteers of these two museums and 291 valid questionnaires were returned. Based on these returned questionnaires, we study and analyze the key factors which affect the performance of these volunteers. The main findings are as follows: 1.Most of the volunteers in TFAM and NPM are women (88.7%), older (55.7% 50 years old and above) and with high educational attainment (66.7% college graduates). 2.The intrinsic motivation of these volunteers is significantly higher than their extrinsic motivation. 3.In general the higher the volunteers’ work motivation is, especially the intrinsic one; the higher their job satisfaction is. Volunteers with higher job satisfaction usually have better job performance. These findings imply that in order to have more effective volunteers, the recruiting managers of non-profit organizations should select applicants with higher intrinsic motivation; the managers should also try to help volunteers to understand the relationship between the values of their work and the goal of their organization because it can enhance their motivation and thus their job performance, job satisfaction, and subsequently reduce their turnover rate as well.

Through integration of digital technology and modern media techniques, all conventional media including text, graphic, and audio can be easily converted into digital formats and further stored, edited, and disseminated by computers. With the increasing prevalence of computer and networking facilities, the role that computers play has shifted from a computing instrument to an important media center. Influenced by this trend, many arts museums have applied digital technology to interpretation of art works to enhance the accessibility of both the museum and collections. Their effort has also produced fruitful results. The aim of this paper is to investigate how physical museums can influence the results of digital archive programs and issues concerning aesthetic visual perception and digitalization of art works. In this paper, art museums are viewed as an intermediary between art works and the audience. Through analysis of commonality and generality of visual perception, this paper attempts to explore the effects of digital technology on aesthetic visual perception. National Palace Museum is selected as a subject for case study and cross-validation. Results indicate that through digitalization of art collections, museums can directly deliver their basic research of historical or cultural works to the audience. In terms of the content of permanent exhibitions, using original art works as the main exhibits can highlight the characteristics of the collection but is also limited to display techniques and protection of the art works. Online exhibitions and educational activities (hereafter referred to as online resources) are based on existing collections of the museum and primarily intended to promote the collections. Because items to be exhibited will be converted into digital images, online exhibitions or resources are not subject to physical constraints and can also encompass items from across different eras and genres. In the application of digital images in permanent exhibitions, displaying digital images and their originals in parallel can present a different angle of the art works. Displaying online resources without their originals in permanent exhibitions can help the audience directly associate the resources to the exhibition and educational content. Through digitalization of art works, details in art works that may be easily neglected can be emphasized, and art elements can be edited or added to create a certain atmosphere or present the history or artist techniques behind the art works. Besides, images captured by technological instruments can extend the audience’s visual experience. Through use of various imaging techniques and visual effects, museums can guide the audience to experience the implicit content and history of art works. Digital technology and digital images can provide diverse looks of art works. They can be used to integrate themes and content to guide and influence audience''s aesthetic visual perception. However, National Palace Museum’s various online resources and online archive systems have not been properly connected and utilized in collaboration with physical exhibitions in the museum. As a result, repetition and fraction of online audience’s visual perception may occur. In the present, all the units of online exhibitions or resources offer explanations of the diverse looks and meanings of art works but within a single context. Despite the fact that visitors are allowed to select the content to view on their own, the museum can also actively present resources related to the content selected by the audience, guiding them to further explore related information.

"An analysis of the work of Kazuo Ishiguro, his biculturalism and his contribution to new internationalism." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10210/5539.

Full text
Abstract:
M.A.
This study was prompted principally by two events: reading Kazuo Ishiguro's The Remains of the Day (1989), and encountering Pico lyer's Time article "The Empire Writes Back" (1993). lyer argues that the late twentieth century has been witness to an important event in the world of literature: the emergence of a new generation of writers writing in English, but not necessarily originating from British-colonial (or postcolonial) backgrounds. Among the writers lyer mentions are Vikram Seth, Michael Ondaatje, Ben Okri and - most notably - Kazuo Ishiguro. Ishiguro was born in Japan but emigrated with his parents to the United Kingdom at the age of six. This study focuses on his biculturalism and the impact that his mixed upbringing has had on his style and thematic concerns. This forms the principal focus of the first part of the study. The influence of Japanese writers, that of Japanese film and, finally, that of the European literary tradition are looked at in turn. The core of this study is a comparative analysis of Ishiguro's first three novels: A Pale View of Hills (1982), An Artist of the Floating World (1986), and The Remains of the Day (1989). Here certain common pre-occupations are identified and discussed - chiefly, Ishiguro's concern with memory, with constructions of the past, and his use of "unreliable" first-person narrators. It is argued that Ishiguro returns insistently to these thematic concerns in his first three novels, and that they can therefore be seen as constituting a three-part exploration of the notion of memory, of "reconstructing" the past. A separate chapter briefly examines Ishiguro's most recent work, The Unconsoled (1995), in which these themes are once again present, although they are bodied forth in a strikingly different style. The purpose of examining this novel is mainly to illustrate its formal and stylistic divergence from the first three (far more successful) novels - a divergence which in turn serves to throw into relief the thematic integrity of the first three novels. The study concludes by drawing together the discussion of the first three novels before moving on to a consideration of Ishiguro's place in what has become known as "New Internationalism". Here it is argued that Ishiguro's work has important resemblances to that of other writers loosely grouped into this literary movement and that he deserves his place among this illustrious group of writers who are changing the face of world literature written in English.

O'Toole, Kiera. "Beyond the pale Australia: the studio as site where notions of Irish national identity are translated into contemporary works of art." Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1959.13/938804.

Abstract:
Masters Research - Master of Philosophy (MPhil)
This exegesis and studio praxis convenes within an Irish contemporary art framework to translate an embodied experience of being an Irish woman living in Australia. As a constituent of the Irish diaspora, my research evokes the sentiments of Irish artist Katy Deepwell, whose remarks about Irishness are echoed in the exegesis that accompanies the works of art: ‘our displacement, our living all over the world, our history of emigration, our psyche’. The impulse of the research is not to fashion sentimentality of a homeland but to examine the physical and psychological distances between the two countries through a personal and critical response to Irish national identity. The conceptual premise of this research analyses the West of Ireland’s position as the enduring site for Irish national identity. The research proposes that this model of identity, constructed in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, lingers in the Irish psyche as the sacred home of Irish national identity. Given the premise of where ‘Irishness’ is seen to be located in the heartland of the West of Ireland, then my position of ‘coming’ from the East presents as a form of otherness or as an alternative way of ‘being’ Irish. In a landscape of ‘Saints and Scholars’ this dichotomy causes tension in relation to belonging and raises questions on the formation of a national identity. To this end, the West of Ireland plays a fundamental role as a place for a self-reflective journey, where the experience of diaspora as it relates to Irish national identity is explored and recorded. The studio-based art practice as research manifests through a series of material conversations to present a discourse that reflects and draws upon Irish and Irish Australian nationalist histories and nationalist ideologies.

Abstract:
Having as a starting point the Tagus river, we began a journey rediscovering the influence of this axis in the Portuguese territory. In reading its margins as a palimpsest, in uncovering it´s layers and traces, we have been able to unveil the history and memories, discovering the cultural and territorial values that testify to the way Man has seized and related to the territory over time. Two major interests soon emerged: river navigation and agriculture; numerous public works were developed for these purposes, namely with the channeling and cleaning of the Tagus River and the opening of drainage ditches in the bordering fields. The union of these two interests is explicit in the Lezíria do Tejo, where we will focus. On discovering vestiges in this territory, we discovered on the right bank of the Tagus the existence of a palatial building. Located near the Vala da Azambuja, and very close to the river, the strangeness of the presence of a rational designed building in a natural and rural territory led to the discovery of a water and economic system: the Vala da Azambuja - initially built for the drainage interests of the agricultural fields, later redesignated in the nineteenth century and appropriated by the Company of Canals of Azambuja for its navigability and transportation of passengers and goods from its mouth to the bridge of Asseca, or vice versa, in a course of almost twenty kilometers. It is in Azambuja that it reveals itself and preserves the memory of the support structure for the navigability of the Vala da Azambuja. This work recovers, preserves and regenerates the area of the old mouth of the Vala da Azambuja and proposes a new journey through the existing water system.

Abstract:
The core of this masters’ dissertation is the definition of a concept: works of majesty [obras de majestade]. Although mentioned in some historiography but with no theoretical definition, we aim to analyse some cases that might help to establish what is obra de majestade. Our chronological framework comprehends what might be called as Barroco joanino, corresponding to João V’s reign (1707-1750). On a path that we trace from Words to Authors, from House to Street we use the following case studies: the Vocabulário Portuguez e Latino (1712-1728) written by Raphael Bluteau (1638-1734); the História Genealógica da Casa Real Portuguesa (1735-1748) composed by D. António Caetano de Sousa (1674-1759); and the Bibliotheca Lusitana (1741-1758) work of Diogo Barbosa Machado (1682-1772). Side by side with the importance of the academic world we find other cases on the city’s landscape: the Águas Livres’ Aqueduct (started in 1713) and the The Feast of Corpus Christi (and its reformation in 1719). Lastly we consider the Palace-Convent of Mafra (started in 1717), work that somehow sintetises the concept we have worked on.
