Full textThe purpose of this thesis was to explore the written accounts of women post-abortion, the experiences they faced associated with abortion, and how they found resolution through faith. The study included a content analysis of 15 women's published essays about the factors involved in making the decision to terminate their pregnancy, the effects of their abortion from a bio/psycho/social/spiritual model, and how resolution was achieved. A literature review was conducted to understand abortion from a systems perspective and to examine the history of the abortion movement, policies that have developed surrounding the topic of abortion, social stigma, and the possible negative effects and coping strategies for post-abortive women. This exploration will support social work professionals by providing an overview of possible abortion experiences and in turn, help them to provide improved care to clients, such as providing educational services to women with unplanned pregnancies and appropriate support for post-abortive women.

Full textWith a trend to eradicate all forms of twelve-year-old labor outside of the home, both globally and locally, the perspectives of ten former employees of a Washington State agriculture business were studied. A study site was selected as an intrinsic case study due to the fact it adheres to state and national child labor policies, yet conflicts with global agreements on what constitutes acceptable child labor practices of twelve-year-old children. Semi-structured. face-to-face interviews, with ten young adults, between the ages of 18 - 25, who worked for the study site when they were 12-years-old, were conducted. Additionally, ten local community members were questioned about their views on the study site. Qualitative data analysis was then performed on transcribed interviews and notes to extract themes related to reasons, insights, and thoughts on their experiences or opinions regarding early work experience. The theoretical framework, consisting of the capabilities approach, was used to interpret the data and develop a discussion of the study's results and implications.
This case study demonstrated that the influence of obtaining a good work ethic and social engagement were primary motivations to start working at 12 years-of-age by the child's family and/or the child. Analysis of the semi-structured interviews revealed that work was not considered easy. Additionally, this study demonstrated that additional choices in the job market were desirable. Findings indicated that stakeholders (the participants, the participants' families and the participants' friends) and community members supported the study site's continued operation model. Results from this investigation may be used to support further research into the protectionist approach to light work practices.

This Master´s Degree Dissertation presents bibliographical analysis on the subject cooperativism and a case study of the Cooperative of Work composed for furniture makers and woodworkers from the city Guajará- Mirim, RO. Our objective was to verify the possibilities and limits that the organization of workers through a Cooperative of Work can offer for their emancipation. To make this analysis we took for base principles and values that guide the cooperativism, such as, solidarity, mutual help and cooperation among its members. Considering the reality that we live in Brazil from the decade of 1990, the cooperatives of work have been multiplying themselves, have been inserted in the process of terceirização of companies, adapting themselves to the transformations guided by neoliberal ideals, that, paradoxically, spread out individualism and the competition as values. It is therefore, in this context that we try to reveal the meaning of the work in the Cooperative of furniture makers in Guajará- Mirim.

This dissertation approaches the work of mourning - which follows one`s anguish of losing love or ideal - as a possible via to prepare the end of an analysis. Such work implies making the subject available to the transitoriness of the object and to the contingency of the phallus. We will attempt to highlight how this task is processed and which object it happens to involve. We will study how the melancholy solution carries this subject`s difficulty in the face of this object. In order to reach our goals, we will adopt the Freudian perspective about the object, and Lacan`s contributions, mainly the ones related to his formulations on the theme.
Singer, Rachel. "The experience of clinicians who work with immigrants: challenges and opportunities." Thesis, Boston College, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/2581.
Full textImmigrants in the United States experience a unique array of mental health stressors related to their experiences of migration and acculturation. For immigrants who are also persons of color, additional obstacles and stressors may compound their experiences. Previous research indicates that while psychologists who work with this population may endorse multicultural competence, they may not actually carry out culturally sensitive practices. Additionally, much of the present literature on therapy with minority clients focuses on aspirational goals. However, analyses of the ways in which these tenets are applied to clinical work are few and far between. What are the barriers to implementing these practices? What resources support clinicians who are working with diverse immigrant populations? The present qualitative study focused on the experience of clinicians who work with minority immigrant clients. Thirteen White psychologists responded to open-ended questions regarding their clinical experience with this population. Interview questions explored positive and negative clinical experiences, issues of power, and the ways in which the therapeutic relationship impacted clinicians' views of themselves. Results of the study indicate that internal and external systemic factors influenced clinicians' expectations for therapy as well as the manner in which they approached problematic relational outcomes. Analyses further highlighted the role of power and systemic influences on the therapeutic relationship. Participating psychologists painted a clear picture of the importance of collaborative, empathic relationships, which further highlights the consequences of neglecting to address underlying tensions. A clear and consistent theme of deeply personal commitment to their work transcended individual interviews. Implications for researchers, clinicians, and training institutions were addressed

Hugo, Cheri Velma. "Students’ perceptions of the relationship between work experience and university learning." Thesis, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11838/2392.
Full textThis research investigates students’ perceptions of the relationship between work experience and university learning. The subjects of the study were third-year students from the Faculty of Informatics and Design at a university of technology in Cape Town, South Africa, and the research focused on the graphic design department within this faculty. The research was approached from an interpretivist’s lens in an attempt to explain and understand the experience that students have in their short time in the industry, namely a two-week work placement, and how they related this to university learning. Students were interviewed before and after work placement in terms of their experience and insight into the relationship between university and the workplace. The research shows how design students experience the processes of learning at the workplace, compared with the processes of learning at university. The research results indicate that students found collaboration and teamwork in the workplace valuable and meaningful. In addition, the different levels of skills in the community of practice in workplaces gave students a wider variety of solutions as they could draw from fellow workers’ experience and skills. This contrasted with university where they work alone and have to produce solutions on their own. Further investigation highlighted that at university there was evidence of interesting findings of timetables, value of the work group, and that at university students are taught in sections compared with the workplace where they draw on anything and everything to complete the assignment. This research makes a few recommendations based on the data collected. These insights can be used to inform policy and practices, further research and development work in the future.

Choice perspectives attribute entry to reasons such as female agency and empowerment, and social and financial independence, while constraint perspectives attribute entry to reasons such as economic necessity, drug and alcohol abuse, childhood sexual abuse, lack of education and job opportunity, and homelessness and truancy.

Full textAn important and basic question, highly-relevant to managerial practice, which has been only partially asked and answered in the organizational literature, concerns the development of initial trust among co-workers. In this dissertation, I develop and test the theoretical idea that individual reflection upon affectively-charged work experience will have considerable influence on present attributions of initial trustworthiness to co-workers. The theory is primarily based in the scholarly literature on attribution theory, affective forecasting and trust concepts. Empirical results from testing across three distinct vignette-based scenarios show that the valence of relevant indirect experience is significantly and positively related to the level of initially attributed trustworthiness. Two experiential indicators, relational self-efficacy and organizational identification, are also found to be situationally and positively related to the level of initially attributed trust. The discussion details important implications for scholarship and management practice

Full textThis project served to locate a potential funding source and develop a grant to provide foster children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in-home based intervention focused on improving the level of care for children with ASD in out-of-home care. The triad that defines the core symptoms of ASD (communication, social, and behavioral) poses concerns on how children with ASD fare while in foster care. The literature review revealed that in home-based intervention would allow the integration of behavioral therapy techniques into parenting, and the transmission of communication, social skills, and behavioral strategies into the child’s natural context, home. The chosen potential funding source is The Ralph M. Parsons Foundation, which focuses on improving quality of care for underserved populations by offering foster parents the services needed to provide better care to children with ASD. The proposed program aims to provide in-home services to children with ASD through partnership with the Alliance Foster Family Agency (AFFA) to assist foster parents in gaining the skills and the knowledge necessary to provide care for children with ASD. If funded, this program will promote a better quality of life for children with ASD. Actual submission of this proposal for funding was not mandatory for the conclusion of this project.
