Suehn, Megan Rachel. "The experience of settlement work with LGBTQ newcomers." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/54708.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to contribute to the literature on migration and settlement work for LGBTQ newcomers and the service providers who support them in Canada. The study employed a descriptive phenomenological research approach to answer the following question: “What are service provider’s perceptions and descriptions of their work in supporting LGBTQ immigrant clients?” Interviews were conducted with twelve service providers working in settlement, social work, and counselling psychology, with experience working with LGBTQ newcomers ranging from fourteen months to twenty five years. Participants represented nine languages and five ethnicities, and worked within the Metro Vancouver region of British Columbia, Canada. Utilising Giorgi’s (2009) descriptive psychological phenomenological method, data analysis uncovered three overarching structures that captured participants’ experiences of settlement work with LGBTQ newcomers. These structures included a) service providers’ perceptions of LGBTQ newcomers’ needs and experience, b) organizational issues, and c) personal impact. This study contributes to a greater understanding of the ways in which settlement work is done with LGBTQ newcomers, and sheds light on factors that are both challenging and beneficial to their service provision work. Recommendations for further research are made, as well as specific recommendations for training and counselling psychologists working with LGBTQ newcomers.

Sinclair, Peter. "Differential outcomes of various models of work experience." Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 1995. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/1159.

Full text
Abstract:
In Western Australia an increasing number of secondary school students participate in work experience programs. Different models of work experience are becoming more common. The Ministry of. Education promotes the use of four such models. The purpose of this study was to examine the outcomes of work experience, as perceived by secondary school students in selected Government Schools, to see if there were any differences according to the model of work experience used. These perceptions were further examined to see if there was a significant difference in perceived outcomes according to other independent variables of student gender, year level, geographic location, duration of work experience or recency of work experience. Data were collected by means of a questionnaire. Students completing work experience in the survey period in responding government secondary schools with appointed Youth Education Officers were asked to complete the questionnaire using a Likert Scale of attitude response. The results of the questionnaire were analyzed using multiple analysis of variance. This gave an objective measure of the extent of achievement, as well as indicating any significant differences according to the independent variable examined. The study concluded that work experience produces positive outcomes in areas related to the employability, career choice, educational attitude and social development of students.

Baker, Martyn Carey. "Work, work values and religious values : how Christian clinical psychologists experience the connections." Thesis, University of Hull, 1999. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:3885.

Full text
Abstract:
The job of the clinical psychologist has been described as that of the 'scientist-practitioner', giving the impression that, in broad terms, it involves the practical application of psychological knowledge in a clinical setting. This study commences by critically examining the values of the 'science' and of the 'practice' involved, and reviewing the available literature on the religious values of clinical psychologists, prior to reporting an empirical investigation of the connections drawn by a group of Christian clinical psychologists working within the UK National Health Service, between their work, their professional values, and their religious commitment. The data on these values connections were gathered in an oblique rather than a direct fashion: the fourteen psychologists who participated, completed a repertory grid which measured their construing of situations at work in which they were highly conscious of their religious commitment. In a semi-stuctured interview, they spoke freely and personally about their understanding of the particular groupings of 'constructs' and 'elements' identified statistically by factoring the grid ratings.Five main themes emerged from a grounded theory qualitative analysis of the interview transcripts. These described workplace issues of enhanced performance and spiritual support; religious disclosure to colleagues, and to clients; value clash; value congruence; and the sense of broader involvement as psychologists who were also members of the Christian community. My overall understanding of what participants said about their grid results, was that these issues might most appropriately be interpreted as dimensions, on which they found themselves occupying variable rather than 'set' positions. Based upon this, I propose a tentative model of the connections between their religious and their work values, as the experience within the workplace, of perpetually shifting positions on the various dimensions identified by the analysis.Consideration is given to the shortcomings and to the implications of the study, and to reflections upon my own involvement as researcher. It is concluded that the status of the results reported, may best be as stimulus for the many lines of further investigation to which they could give rise.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to gain a better understanding of transgender people and allow participants to have a voice in describing the experience of those in the transgender community. This study was conducted utilizing qualitative analysis through individual interviews with six participants. One of the major key findings of this study was the prevalence of depression among all participants. Another key finding of this study found safety among peers to be an issue for those transitioning from male to female. From the findings, it is imperative for social work practitioners to understand this marginalized community and be sensitive to the issues they face, such as: higher rates of mortality, suicide, substance abuse, and mental health issues.

Abstract:
This essay examines how trans people experience Swedish public libraries, as well as how the library can be an integral part of their trans identity work. The data sample was collected through semi-structured phenomenological interviews with five trans and non-binary library users. The analysis of the interview data was done using the method of thematic analysis (TA), following an inductive approach. The theoretical framework focuses on five different, but connecting, concepts. Mainly, theories about intersectionality; whiteness; the heterosexual matrix; orientation; and categorization. The results of this study show that trans people use and experience the library in a myriad of different ways. It is clear, however, that all the informants look to libraries to provide them with material that they can see themselves represented in, to get a sense of validation for their gender identity. Even though the library provides this in some ways, other aspects connected to libraries function to hinder trans people in their identity work. There are several ways that libraries can improve on their services toward trans patrons, and one of these are to better facilitate meetings between different trans people through more activities catering towards this group. In short, libraries need to be mindful about this specific group both when it comes to the services they offer, as well as the physical layout of the library space. These are all aspects which affect and influence trans people and their ability to construct and express their gender identity.

Abstract:
As a consequence of increased retention rates in post compulsory schooling, educational systems have attempted to expand their curricular offerings. The aims of this study were twofold. The first was to examine a process of transition from school to work and the second considered the implications for improvement of the post compulsory school curriculum in facilitating transition. A semi structured, open ended interview was developed to gain information about the transition experience of seven Year 12 students. Interviews, recorded by audio tape, and the coded transcripts were the major data source. Results indicated that students coped well with the transition from school to work, enjoying the increased responsibilities and being treated as grown up by employers and parents. Part time work, school based work experience, and through Work Studies learning job search skills, self-responsibility and self-confidence were seen as of value. This suggests post compulsory education should make learning relevant to students by linking work based learning with classroom education and creating educational pathways that prepare all students to navigate their way through the changing job market.

McLeod, D. "Construction of personal work-theory in the young administrator." Thesis, Brunel University, 1988. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/5761.

Full text
Abstract:
Statistical predictive validity has regularly been demonstrated for the complex selection procedure by which young high-potential administrative entrants are recruited to the Civil Service. There is, however, a largely unexplored qualitative aspect to recruitment as well. For most successful candidates, taking up appointment as trainee administrators represents a major life-transition - from full-time education to full-time employment. What is that experience like? How do they go about making sense of their new circumstances? Six trainees took part in the enquiry, which centred on a series of interviews carried out over the course of their first year at work. The focus in this ideographic study is on the individual as learner In a natural setting. Analysis of the accounts produced is set in a social cognition framework, and something of the approach of the ethnographer is also brought to bear. Particular attention is paid to the status of narrative as knowledge. A simple model is outlined for narrative-based reflection as a means to development, with the prospect of the individual acting as his or her own mentor in the process.

Full text
Abstract:
At a computational technology company called LTC, a large array of employees worked together to design the user experience (UX) of a variety of products. The empirical case study explores the relationship amongst the work of UX design, the work setting, and the larger strategic claims being made about the value, efficacy, and importance of design methods. The main research question is: How is the activity of design reflected and constructed by a local culture and material environment? By addressing the way designing occurs in a particular setting, the dissertation unpacks assumptions about setting and ideology within design studies and human-computer interaction. These assumptions impact the legitimacy of design as work, and challenge accepted justifications for the role of design in the development of technological artifacts. A better understanding of design work explores the proliferation of design as a general strategy for problem-solving, while questioning the agenda of this proliferation. The case study follows three accounts of UX design work at LTC. The research connects these accounts to theoretical concerns within design studies and HCI about agency, the setting of design, and the limits on design practice.

Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis was to explore the written accounts of women post-abortion, the experiences they faced associated with abortion, and how they found resolution through faith. The study included a content analysis of 15 women's published essays about the factors involved in making the decision to terminate their pregnancy, the effects of their abortion from a bio/psycho/social/spiritual model, and how resolution was achieved. A literature review was conducted to understand abortion from a systems perspective and to examine the history of the abortion movement, policies that have developed surrounding the topic of abortion, social stigma, and the possible negative effects and coping strategies for post-abortive women. This exploration will support social work professionals by providing an overview of possible abortion experiences and in turn, help them to provide improved care to clients, such as providing educational services to women with unplanned pregnancies and appropriate support for post-abortive women.

Abstract:
This study investigates individual perceptions of work related attributes during the employment search process. Specifically, the purpose of this study was to investigate: 1) the relationship of job seeker work experience to the importance placed on work-related attributes, and 2) the relationship of job seeker gender to the importance placed on work-related attributes. Six hundred and ninety-four graduating baccalaureate hospitality students from eleven nationwide universities with accredited hotel-restaurant programs participated in this study. Hypotheses proposed in this study were largely unsupported. Methodological difficulties associated with survey instrumentation and administration rendered the findings of this study inconclusive.

Abstract:
The primary purpose of this study was to test the theory of experiential learning by measuring to what extent work experience predicts the work ethic characteristics of students in baccalaureate nursing programs at three regional universities in Texas, including Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Tarleton State University in Stephenville, and West Texas A&M University in Canyon. Work experience is the amount full-time or part-time on-the-job experience. Work ethic attributes are referred to as considerate, ambitious, dependable, and cooperative. Results generated in this study failed to reject the null hypotheses, which means that work experience, does not provide evidence of the ability to predict the development of work ethic characteristics in baccalaureate nursing students who participated in this research study. Knowledge generated in this study provided alternative directions for future research with respect to the relationship between work experiences and work ethic characteristics in nursing students. Such research may be useful to nursing educators and trainers in the design and delivery phases of the educational process for nurses.

Abstract:

With a trend to eradicate all forms of twelve-year-old labor outside of the home, both globally and locally, the perspectives of ten former employees of a Washington State agriculture business were studied. A study site was selected as an intrinsic case study due to the fact it adheres to state and national child labor policies, yet conflicts with global agreements on what constitutes acceptable child labor practices of twelve-year-old children. Semi-structured. face-to-face interviews, with ten young adults, between the ages of 18 - 25, who worked for the study site when they were 12-years-old, were conducted. Additionally, ten local community members were questioned about their views on the study site. Qualitative data analysis was then performed on transcribed interviews and notes to extract themes related to reasons, insights, and thoughts on their experiences or opinions regarding early work experience. The theoretical framework, consisting of the capabilities approach, was used to interpret the data and develop a discussion of the study's results and implications.

This case study demonstrated that the influence of obtaining a good work ethic and social engagement were primary motivations to start working at 12 years-of-age by the child's family and/or the child. Analysis of the semi-structured interviews revealed that work was not considered easy. Additionally, this study demonstrated that additional choices in the job market were desirable. Findings indicated that stakeholders (the participants, the participants' families and the participants' friends) and community members supported the study site's continued operation model. Results from this investigation may be used to support further research into the protectionist approach to light work practices.

Willemse, Marietjie. "Experiencing a sense of calling : the influence of meaningful work on teachers' work attitude / Marietjie Willemse." Thesis, North-West University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/10183.

Full text
Abstract:
In the current South African context, negative work attitude of teachers has become a phenomenon to be reckoned with as it has a detrimental effect on the education system. Although research on this phenomenon is still scarce, a growing interest in work attitude and its different underlying constructs is obvious from the increase of work attitude research. It is now time to investigate ways to improve work attitude, one of which could be to invest in meaningful work. The aim of this study is to expand on the understanding of the relationship between experiencing a sense of calling and work attitude as well as to determine the influence of meaningful work on this relationship. Through this study the researcher proposed an adapted model of Steger, Pickering, Shin and Dik (2011) which will serve as an academic tool for future research. This model will also be applicable as a management tool to understand and deal with teachers’ negative work attitude. A quantitative, cross-sectional survey design was used. The analysis was based on data from a representative sample of teachers recruited from primary and secondary schools in the Fezile Dabi district (n = 270) formerly known as the Northern Free State School district. The following measuring instruments were administered: The Calling and Vocation Questionnaire (CVQ), The Work and Meaning Inventory (WAMI), The Work Preference Inventory (WPI) and The Career Decision Profile (CDP). The researcher used the analytic approach of structural equation modelling by means of the statistical program Mplus. The results revealed that a statistically significant relationship existed between the experience of a sense of calling and work attitude. Results also supported the hypothesis that meaningful work has an indirect effect on the relationship between the experience of a calling and work attitude. The findings of this study indicated that positive work attitude tends to be enhanced by the addition of meaningful work. The Department of Education will have to take ognisance of ways to create meaningful work if they wish to succeed in educational transformation, as meaningful work has an indirect effect on the relationship between the experience of a calling and work attitude of teachers. Future studies should include longitudinal studies to validate the proposed adapted model and to identify more predictors of positive work attitude.

This Master´s Degree Dissertation presents bibliographical analysis on the subject cooperativism and a case study of the Cooperative of Work composed for furniture makers and woodworkers from the city Guajará- Mirim, RO. Our objective was to verify the possibilities and limits that the organization of workers through a Cooperative of Work can offer for their emancipation. To make this analysis we took for base principles and values that guide the cooperativism, such as, solidarity, mutual help and cooperation among its members. Considering the reality that we live in Brazil from the decade of 1990, the cooperatives of work have been multiplying themselves, have been inserted in the process of terceirização of companies, adapting themselves to the transformations guided by neoliberal ideals, that, paradoxically, spread out individualism and the competition as values. It is therefore, in this context that we try to reveal the meaning of the work in the Cooperative of furniture makers in Guajará- Mirim.

This dissertation approaches the work of mourning - which follows one`s anguish of losing love or ideal - as a possible via to prepare the end of an analysis. Such work implies making the subject available to the transitoriness of the object and to the contingency of the phallus. We will attempt to highlight how this task is processed and which object it happens to involve. We will study how the melancholy solution carries this subject`s difficulty in the face of this object. In order to reach our goals, we will adopt the Freudian perspective about the object, and Lacan`s contributions, mainly the ones related to his formulations on the theme.

Immigrants in the United States experience a unique array of mental health stressors related to their experiences of migration and acculturation. For immigrants who are also persons of color, additional obstacles and stressors may compound their experiences. Previous research indicates that while psychologists who work with this population may endorse multicultural competence, they may not actually carry out culturally sensitive practices. Additionally, much of the present literature on therapy with minority clients focuses on aspirational goals. However, analyses of the ways in which these tenets are applied to clinical work are few and far between. What are the barriers to implementing these practices? What resources support clinicians who are working with diverse immigrant populations? The present qualitative study focused on the experience of clinicians who work with minority immigrant clients. Thirteen White psychologists responded to open-ended questions regarding their clinical experience with this population. Interview questions explored positive and negative clinical experiences, issues of power, and the ways in which the therapeutic relationship impacted clinicians' views of themselves. Results of the study indicate that internal and external systemic factors influenced clinicians' expectations for therapy as well as the manner in which they approached problematic relational outcomes. Analyses further highlighted the role of power and systemic influences on the therapeutic relationship. Participating psychologists painted a clear picture of the importance of collaborative, empathic relationships, which further highlights the consequences of neglecting to address underlying tensions. A clear and consistent theme of deeply personal commitment to their work transcended individual interviews. Implications for researchers, clinicians, and training institutions were addressed

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Graphic Design))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2016.
This research investigates students’ perceptions of the relationship between work experience and university learning. The subjects of the study were third-year students from the Faculty of Informatics and Design at a university of technology in Cape Town, South Africa, and the research focused on the graphic design department within this faculty. The research was approached from an interpretivist’s lens in an attempt to explain and understand the experience that students have in their short time in the industry, namely a two-week work placement, and how they related this to university learning. Students were interviewed before and after work placement in terms of their experience and insight into the relationship between university and the workplace. The research shows how design students experience the processes of learning at the workplace, compared with the processes of learning at university. The research results indicate that students found collaboration and teamwork in the workplace valuable and meaningful. In addition, the different levels of skills in the community of practice in workplaces gave students a wider variety of solutions as they could draw from fellow workers’ experience and skills. This contrasted with university where they work alone and have to produce solutions on their own. Further investigation highlighted that at university there was evidence of interesting findings of timetables, value of the work group, and that at university students are taught in sections compared with the workplace where they draw on anything and everything to complete the assignment. This research makes a few recommendations based on the data collected. These insights can be used to inform policy and practices, further research and development work in the future.

Research into the reasons why sex workers enter and stay in sex work has largely viewed entry from perspectives of either choice or constraint. Choice perspectives attribute entry to reasons such as female agency and empowerment, and social and financial independence, while constraint perspectives attribute entry to reasons such as economic necessity, drug and alcohol abuse, childhood sexual abuse, lack of education and job opportunity, and homelessness and truancy.

Roussin, Christopher Jay. "The Influence of Experiential Grounding on Attributions of Initial Trustworthiness at Work." Thesis, Boston College, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/714.

Abstract:

An important and basic question, highly-relevant to managerial practice, which has been only partially asked and answered in the organizational literature, concerns the development of initial trust among co-workers. In this dissertation, I develop and test the theoretical idea that individual reflection upon affectively-charged work experience will have considerable influence on present attributions of initial trustworthiness to co-workers. The theory is primarily based in the scholarly literature on attribution theory, affective forecasting and trust concepts. Empirical results from testing across three distinct vignette-based scenarios show that the valence of relevant indirect experience is significantly and positively related to the level of initially attributed trustworthiness. Two experiential indicators, relational self-efficacy and organizational identification, are also found to be situationally and positively related to the level of initially attributed trust. The discussion details important implications for scholarship and management practice

Abstract:
The aim of this project was to find and implement actions to increase ERP system developers’ ability to improve user experience. The focus has been methods and resources that are used in the everyday work, and the selected methodology was action research. The project took place at IFS, which develops the ERP system IFS Applications. The project started with a pre-study consisting of interviews, observations and a survey. Then, four workshops were organized where the methods Ad hoc personas, Heuristic evaluation and Speed sketching were introduced and practiced. The workshops also included information on user experience in ERP systems. The workshops were then evaluated with a new survey and focus groups. The results show that the participants thought the workshops had a positive effect on their ability to work with user experience. Heuristic evaluation and speed sketching were very well-received, and deemed easy to integrate with the everyday work. Ad hoc personas workshops should be conducted early in a project to have the best effect. Overall, the workshops increased the participants’ motivation for user experience work.

Holloway, Mark. "Acquired brain injury : the lived experience of family members." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2017. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/71076/.

Full text
Abstract:
Family members are themselves affected by the impact of Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) upon their relatives and they play an important role in the rehabilitation and long term support required. The study aims to understand how families are impacted and their views on the formal and informal support received directly or indirectly as a consequence of the ABI. To date there has been very little research undertaken by social workers in relation to ABI and/or the experience of family members. A mixed methods research design was employed to capture the lived experience of family members of people with ABI. The results of the quantitative and qualitative data were triangulated against the literature. An online survey was completed by 110 relatives of people with an ABI, seeking their experience of the condition, its impact upon their lives and their views of services. The results of the survey were collated and organised in SPSS (version 24). Non-parametric Spearman's Rho Correlations (non-parametric test) were performed upon the results. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 16 family members of people with severe ABI to ascertain the family members' experience of their relatives' condition, its impact upon them and their views of the associated formal and informal support received. Inductive thematic analysis of the transcribed interview data was undertaken to identify themes. The quantitative element of the research identified strong correlations between the relative's assessment of the invisible impairments suffered by those with an ABI (cognitive, executive, behavioural and emotional difficulties) and lack of insight. This correlation was not present in relation to physical impairment. It was observed that increased loss of insight and behavioural difficulties were strongly correlated with loss of friendships by the non-injured family member. The results of the inductive thematic analysis identified 7 themes which were: 1: The Context 2: The All-Encompassing Challenge 3: Family Loss and Grief 4: The Unavoidable Burden 5: The Poor Experience of Support 6: Positive Support and Change 7: The Curator of Narrative The research identified that family members' experience is complex and enduring, encompassing most aspects of life, and is affected by the context in which it occurs as well as by formal and informal support structures. The particular nature of the grief and loss experienced by families is ambiguous, develops over time and leads to ambivalent feelings for family members who perceive no option but to remain involved. Informal and formal support frequently fails to take account of the reality and complexity of the condition and fails to integrate the relative by recognising their own losses and trauma. Relatives' views on the services received identified significant gaps in practitioner knowledge, most especially of those aspects of life that were of most concern to them, the invisible impairments and issues with insight. Practitioners that were valued were more likely to be specialists in the condition and practiced as “expert companions” supporting the relative to develop a new “neuro-narrative” to reconstruct their identity in the face of their ongoing grief. The specific nature of the condition requires such an approach if input is to be effective. Greater understanding of the complex lived experience of family members may support more effective responses to both them and the individual with ABI, integrating services and families to improve quality-of-life. As ABI is a process with changes to functioning developing over time, the information and knowledge required by loving and supportive relatives needs to be created with them, being person-, family-, injury-and-context-specific.

Whited, Willie W. "The subjective experience of auditory hallucinations in African American alcohol dependent clients." DigitalCommons@Robert W. Woodruff Library, Atlanta University Center, 1994. http://digitalcommons.auctr.edu/dissertations/606.

Full text
Abstract:
This study has the purpose of measuring three variables which were hypothesized to be related to the subjective experience of auditory hallucinations in African American, alcohol dependent clients. The sample for this study consisted of thirty—one African American individuals (twenty males and eleven females) who were selected from 150 African Americans based on homogeneity on prescreen admission logs. The logs were obtained from the records of a metropolitan Atlanta crisis intervention service. Each case of the sample was previously diagnosed with the alcohol dependent syndrome. An instrument consisting of sixteen questions was employed and utilized to check off the answers provided by archival records (progress notes). The scores from the list were analyzed to determine the percentages and correlations of all hypotheses. The findings of the study demonstrated that there were statistically significant relationships in regards to the percentages in all three hypothesized variables. The dependent variable, auditory hallucination, did not show statistically significant correlations with the independent variables, namely auditory hallucinations, in alcohol dependent African Americans; marital status in the incidence of alcoholic auditory hallucination and employment status in the occurrence of auditory hallucinations. The pattern of percentages showed that the relationship was in the predicted direction; however, the pattern of correlations were not as anticipated.

Abstract:

This project served to locate a potential funding source and develop a grant to provide foster children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in-home based intervention focused on improving the level of care for children with ASD in out-of-home care. The triad that defines the core symptoms of ASD (communication, social, and behavioral) poses concerns on how children with ASD fare while in foster care. The literature review revealed that in home-based intervention would allow the integration of behavioral therapy techniques into parenting, and the transmission of communication, social skills, and behavioral strategies into the child’s natural context, home. The chosen potential funding source is The Ralph M. Parsons Foundation, which focuses on improving quality of care for underserved populations by offering foster parents the services needed to provide better care to children with ASD. The proposed program aims to provide in-home services to children with ASD through partnership with the Alliance Foster Family Agency (AFFA) to assist foster parents in gaining the skills and the knowledge necessary to provide care for children with ASD. If funded, this program will promote a better quality of life for children with ASD. Actual submission of this proposal for funding was not mandatory for the conclusion of this project.

Beukes, Ilka. "The experience of organisational commitment, work engagement and meaning of work of nursing staff in hospitals / Ilka Beukes." Thesis, North-West University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/10275.

Abstract:
Nursing as a profession presents an interesting context for studying meaning of work, as it centres on the care of patients; the motivation behind choosing such a profession. Furthermore, taking into consideration the current economic situation and the shortage of nurses in the country, it is important to investigate the kind of impact that the meaning they receive from their work may have on their commitment to the hospital and their level of engagement in their work. What nurses do and how well they do it relates directly to the quality of care the patient receives. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between meaning of work, organisational commitment and work engagement among nurses of various hospitals in the Vaal Triangle. Also investigated were biographical factors such as gender, race, age, citizenship, qualification, years of service, job level and employment status. A survey design was used on a sample of nurses (N = 199) in hospitals. A biographical questionnaire, the Organisational Commitment Questionnaire, the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale and Work-Life Questionnaire were administered. The statistical analyses were carried out by means of SPSS (2009). Factor analyses were conducted to determine construct validity and Cronbach’s alphas and inter-item correlation coefficients assessed the internal consistency of the instruments. Cronbach’s alpha coefficients ranging from 0,94 to 0,62 were obtained for the above-mentioned questionnaires. Results showed that the majority of nurses viewed their work as either a job or a calling. More African nurses viewed their work as a calling than did any other race group. Younger workers, specifically those with a Grade 12 qualification, viewed their work as a career, while the more experienced nurses and those on management level viewed their work as either a career or a calling. Furthermore, nurses viewing their work as a calling are more committed to the organisation and more engaged in their work, whereas nurses viewing their work as a job are less committed and engaged. Lastly, a positive relationship exists between organisational commitment and work engagement. Therefore, the more strongly nurses view their work as a calling, the more committed they will be to the hospital and the more engaged they will be in their work. Based on the above findings, recommendations were made for the hospitals and future research.

Nystrom, Austin, and Fabian Ortiz. "COMMON SOURCES OF ANXIETY FOR STUDENTS WHO EXPERIENCE SUICIDAL IDEATION." CSUSB ScholarWorks, 2019. https://scholarworks.lib.csusb.edu/etd/868.

Full text
Abstract:
This study was conducted to identify what sources of anxiety are most closely associated with experiencing SI among students in a school district in Southern California. Anxiety and suicide rates in youth continue to grow and a need for preventative services is a must. The research design consists of qualitative, biopsychosocial assessments, and qualitative, utilizing the collected data. MSW interns at the district site conducted the assessments and the writers analyzed and reviewed the data to draw out an answer to the research question. Implications for social work practice include gaining a better understanding on the common sources of anxiety as well as other precipitating factors that youth with SI experience. By identifying stressors and common factors social workers will be able to recognize red-flags and provide faster, more targeted preventative services to youth suffering from SI.
