JUETTNER, VIRGINIA WEAVER. "THE WORD PROCESSING ENVIRONMENT AND ITS IMPACT ON THE WRITING OF A GROUP OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/184071.

Full text
Abstract:
This research project studied a class of high school 11th and 12th grade writing students, for one semester, as they learned to use word processors for composing and editing assignments. The goals of the study were to (a) determine whether the use of a word processor created a special learning environment, (b) document the learning environment created, (c) document the resultant student word processing concepts, schemata and strategies, and (d) document the effects on the writing of students. Five predictions, based on research on language thought and symbol systems, and the application of a theoretical model formed the basis for observations. The predictions were tested by collecting and analyzing student writing and observational data. Student concepts, schemata and strategies were documented through use of the checklists and through observation. Pre- and post-student writing samples were matched and analyzed using individual T-tests, ANOVA and MANCOVA to determine any impact on writing due to the use of word processors. Questionnaires provided background information on English teacher and student writing/word processing backgrounds. Findings indicate support for the research model and predictions 1-4. The research model was found to be useful in organizing data and summarizing prediction results, and may offer assistance to teachers and researchers who want to study the impact of microcomputers from a total learning environment perspective.

Livingston, Alan. "A Comparative Analysis of Style of User Interface Look and Feel in a Synchronous Computer Supported Cooperative Work Environment." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2005. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc4765/.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to determine whether the style of a user interface (i.e., its look and feel) has an effect on the usability of a synchronous computer supported cooperative work (CSCW) environment for delivering Internet-based collaborative content. The problem motivating this study is that people who are located in different places need to be able to communicate with one another. One way to do this is by using complex computer tools that allow users to share information, documents, programs, etc. As an increasing number of business organizations require workers to use these types of complex communication tools, it is important to determine how users regard these types of tools and whether they are perceived to be useful. If a tool, or interface, is not perceived to be useful then it is often not used, or used ineffectively. As organizations strive to improve communication with and among users by providing more Internet-based collaborative environments, the users' experience in this form of delivery may be tied to a style of user interface look and feel that could negatively affect their overall acceptance and satisfaction of the collaborative environment. The significance of this study is that it applies the technology acceptance model (TAM) as a tool for evaluating style of user interface look and feel in a collaborative environment, and attempts to predict which factors of that model, perceived ease of use and/or perceived usefulness, could lead to better acceptance of collaborative tools within an organization.

Most test ranges are required to process both telemetry and Time Space Position Information (TSPI) data in real time. Using the Integrated Flight Data Processing System (IFDAPS) at Edwards AFB as an example, this paper identifies some of the basic differences between telemetry and TSPI data processing and discusses methods of integrating the two types of processing. Included for consideration in the integrated processing are data acquisition, measurement displays, recording, derived measurement computations using both types of data, and post flight merging of telemetry and TSPI data. Data processing is discussed in a concurrent, multiple operation environment using separate, integrated processors.

Abstract:
Data is one of the most valuable organizational assets that are susceptible to compromise when appropriate security measures are not in place. Preventing data loss is a dynamic and ongoing process that requires frequent effort and investment from organizations. This study provides a comprehensive overview of the risk to organizational data (i.e., data loss) due to the increase in remote work taking over the business landscape. In seeking answers to the research question, the study applies thematic analysis in analyzing qualitative data from the interview of 6 respondents with over 5 years of information security experience. The analysis identified four themes (threats, risk, security incident and security posture) that are relevant in answering the research questions. The findings show that there was an increase in phishing, malware and DOS attack against the organisation information assets since the inception of the global pandemic which has led to data loss and affected the organization’s competitive advantage and reputation. Also, the security posture before the pandemic was not effective in dealing with the increase in cyber attacks during the pandemic. The pandemic has led organizations to reassess their security posture to identify areas that need to be strengthened. The challenge in achieving an effective security posture is the attack surface is expanding and changing rapidly as well as the insufficient resources available (both human and financial). The organisation reassessed their security posture to identify gaps that need to be addressed. Employee training and awareness need to be done more frequently as well as implementing different technical security measures. Also, policies and procedures are implemented that outlines the acceptable use and management of the organization information assets.

Abstract:
Wireless sensor network, which is constitute of autonomous sensors, is used for monitoring physical or environmental conditions like temperature, sound, pressure, and so on. The dispersed sensors or nodes will respectively pass their data through the network to the main location. Currently, several standards are ratified or in developing for wireless sensor network, like Wireless Hart, ISA, 100.11a, WIA-PAA, IEEE 802.15.4, etc. Among the standards, Zigbee is often used in industrial applications that require short-range and low-rate wireless transfer. In the research, all the data is collected under industrial environment using IEEE 802.15.4 compliant physical layer, some packets are interfered only by multi-path fading while others are also interfered by Wi-Fi interference. The goal of the thesis is to find out the dependence between the received power (RSS), correlation value (CORR) and bit error rate (BER) of the received message, and their distribution in situations both when the packet is lost or not. Besides, the performance of bit error rate such as the distribution and the features of burst error length under Wi-Fi interference or not will also be tested. All of them are based on a precise statistical processing.

Van, Ostrand Rita A. "A computerized working environment for retail pharmacists." Virtual Press, 1987. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/484763.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate how well the computer hardware/software industry was meeting the needs of the retail pharmacist. The needs were determined by a survey of 1000 Indiana pharmacists. A reply rate of 22% revealed that the most important problems pharmacists were facing with their computer systems were slow access of the data, the length of backup time, no drug interaction check, and no multitasking. Hardware and software means of meeting these problems were studied. Also the currently available systems were evaluated in terms of these problems. It was found that while most systems were adequately meeting some of these problems no system was addressing all of them. Some of the systems were multitasking but were much too expensive for the small pharmacy. A system can be designed that meets all of these needs without neglecting the basic needs of pharmacists and at a very reasonable cost.

Abstract:
Graph theory is a relatively new way of thinking in mathematics. Graphs can model a number of different problems. Graph theory introduces solutions to many problems which human beings have faced since ancient times.A study of graphs will not be complete without an introduction to both theory and algorithms. Invention of the tools for studying graphs is necessary in order to help people learn the theory and execute the algorithms. The study of graphs itself, by nature, needs graphical representation which can give clearer images for a better understanding. A windowing environment is selected as an instrument for developing a device to study graphs because of its friendly Graphical User Interface.

Kesterton, Anthony James. "The synthesis of sound with application in a MIDI environment." Thesis, Rhodes University, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1006701.

Full text
Abstract:
The wide range of options for experimentation with the synthesis of sound are usually expensive, difficult to obtain, or limit the experimenter. The work described in this thesis shows how the IBM PC and software can be combined to provide a suitable platform for experimentation with different synthesis techniques. This platform is based on the PC, the Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) and a musical instrument called a digital sampler. The fundamental concepts of sound are described, with reference to digital sound reproduction. A number of synthesis techniques are described. These are evaluated according to the criteria of generality, efficiency and control. The techniques discussed are additive synthesis, frequency modulation synthesis, subtractive synthesis, granular synthesis, resynthesis, wavetable synthesis, and sampling. Spiral synthesis, physical modelling, waveshaping and spectral interpolation are discussed briefly. The Musical Instrument Digital Interface is a standard method of connecting digital musical instruments together. It is the MIDI standard and equipment conforming to that standard that makes this implementation of synthesis techniques possible. As a demonstration of the PC platform, additive synthesis, frequency modulation synthesis, granular synthesis and spiral synthesis have been implemented in software. A PC equipped with a MIDI interface card is used to perform the synthesis. The MIDI protocol is used to transmit the resultant sound to a digital sampler. The INMOS transputer is used as an accelerator, as the calculation of a waveform using software is a computational intensive process. It is concluded that sound synthesis can be performed successfully using a PC and the appropriate software, and utilizing the facilities provided by a MIDI environment including a digital sampler.

Muchemwa, Regis Fadzi. "Real-time decision support systems in a selected big data environment." Thesis, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11838/2350.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Business Information Systems))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2016.
The emergence of big data (BD) has rendered existing conventional business intelligence (BI) tools inefficient and ineffective for real-time decision support systems (DSS). The inefficiency and ineffectiveness is perceived when business users need to make decisions based on stale and sometimes, incomplete data sets, which potentially leads to slow and poor decision making. In recent years, industry and academia have invented new technologies to process BD such as Hadoop, Spark, in-memory databases and NOSQL databases. The appearance of these new technologies have escalated to an extent, that organisations are faced with the challenge of determining most suitable technologies that are appropriate for real-time DSS requirements. Due to BD still being a new concept, there are no standard guidelines or frameworks available to assist in the evaluation and comparing of BD technologies. This research aims to explore factors that influence the selection of technologies appropriate for real-time DSSs in a BD environment. In addition, it further proposes evaluation criteria that can be used to compare and select these technologies. To achieve this aim, a literature analysis to understand the concept of BD, real-time DSSs and related technologies is conducted. Qualitative as well as quantitative research techniques are used after interviews are conducted with BI experts who have BD knowledge and experience. Experimental research in a computer laboratory is also conducted. The purpose of the interviews is to ascertain which technologies are being used for BD analytics and in addition, which evaluation criteria organisations use when choosing such a technology. Furthermore, a comparative computer laboratory experiment is conducted to compare three tools which run on Hadoop namely; Hive, Impala and Spark. The purpose of the experiment is to test if system performance is different for the three tools when analysing the same data set and the same computer resources. The impirical results reveals nine main factors which impact the selection of technologies appropriate for real-time DSS in a BD environment, and ten application independent evaluation criteria. Furthermore, the experiment results indicate that system performance in terms of latency, is significantly different among the three tools compared.

Abstract:
This project is about how free, open-source tools can create reasonable, secure and flexible remote access solutions for smaller companies with a limited budget.  Secure remote access to a working environment is a solution for its time, as last year Covid-19 change the working environment for millions of employers and employees. The importance of secure remote access to a working environment became noticeable as offices closed down and employers started working from home. Still, the need for secure access to the company's infrastructure remains. This is where Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) enter the picture, as it has a broad application scope and is particularly useful for secure remote access. My project was subdivided into three parts: How to implement secure remote access to a working environment within the requirements of the chosen company, which are an inexpensive solution with high-security features.  Automate the creation and distribution of all the necessary parts that their employees will need in a VPN structure. Research about the future direction regarding VPN and the importance of cybersecurity to help ensure security preparedness for the company. The chosen solution was OpenVPN and Google authenticator, together with a written bash script. It became a solution that was free, flexible, secure and scalable. But why the need and what about the future?  Research shows that a high percentage of small and medium-sized enterprises are vulnerable to cyberattacks. It also shows that these companies have the lowest cybersecurity. "It wouldn't happen to us" is dangerous but, sadly, a typical mindset throughout the S&M companies. It's primarily because of this S&M's are more exposed than larger companies. The future of VPN's has become more important than ever before, and it's something that during Covid-19 has risen in use all over the world, the research and development of VPNs has accelerated. The research objectives of this project are of high interest to many other organizations in the same position, and the presented work has helped answer the question: "Where will we stand in a few years regarding secure remote work, cybersecurity andencrypted networks?"

Skipper, Lee R. "Development of a microcomputer-based capital budgeting algorithm for the dynamic decision environment." Thesis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/101266.

Full text
Abstract:
The capital budgeting process is conducted in a dynamic, uncertain environment. In each period of the process, a manager has only estimated values for system parameters, project costs, and project returns. The manager must consider project firm's capital among interdependencies the available in allocating the projects. After completing the allocation process in one period, the chosen projects are funded until the end of the next period. These projects are then considered along with new projects and the process is repeated again. The capital budgeting decision in one period is therefore only one of a long sequence of such decisions, all of which are made in a dynamic, uncertain environment. The algorithm presented in this study models the dynamic environment of uncertainty. The algorithm utilizes a future worth of net return criterion in conducting the decision. Available projects may be estimated as discrete point estimates or as combinations of continuous functions. All projects under consideration need not have the same life; unequal-lived projects may be considered. After the optimal combination of projects is identified, four sensitivity analyses may be run to analyze the effect of any uncertainty in that period. The dynamic environment may then be analyzed by simulating the environment which would be faced when the decision is made .again at the end of the next period. Any of the system parameters and estimates of the continuing projects may be altered in that period to reflect the changes in the last period's estimates. An example is provided to illustrate the workings of the algorithm.

Deb, Debzani. "Achieving self-managed deployment in a distributed environment via utility functions." Thesis, Montana State University, 2008. http://etd.lib.montana.edu/etd/2008/deb/DebD0508.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation presents algorithms and mechanisms that enable self-managed, scalable and efficient deployment of large-scale scientific and engineering applications in a highly dynamic and unpredictable distributed environment. Typically these applications are composed of a large number of distributed components and it is important to meet the computational power and network bandwidth requirements of those components and their interactions. However satisfying these requirements in a large-scale, shared, heterogeneous, and highly dynamic distributed environment is a significant challenge. As systems and applications grow in scale and complexity, attaining the desired level of performance in this uncertain environment using current approaches based on global knowledge, centralized scheduling and manual reallocation becomes infeasible. This dissertation focuses on the modeling of the application and underlying architecture into a common abstraction and on the incorporations of autonomic features into those abstractions to achieve self-managed deployment. In particular, we developed techniques for automatically identifying application components and their estimated resource requirements within an application and used them in order to model the application into a graph abstraction. We also developed techniques that allow the distributed resources to self-organize in a utility-aware way while assuming minimal knowledge about the system. Finally, to achieve self-managed deployment of application components to the distributed nodes, we designed a scalable and adaptive scheduling algorithm which is governed by a utility function. The utility function, which combines several application and system level attributes, governs both the initial deployment of the application components and their reconfigurations despite the dynamism and uncertainty associated with the computing environment. The experimental results show that it is possible to achieve and maintain efficient deployment by applying the utility function derived in this paper based solely on locally available information and without costly global communication or synchronization. The self-management is therefore decentralized and provides better adaptability, scalability and robustness.

Sports organizations, like other businesses, have a need to ingest data and therefrom to produce serviceable information for purposes of communications and decision making. However, sports personnel and general business personnel typically differ in educational background and computer experience, the sports person often unaware of the advantages offered by computers. Consequently, this thesis's purpose is to: l. Introduce sports organizations to the potential usefulness of small computer systems, 2. Present a definitional review of basic small computer hardware components and software concepts, 3. Provide a methodical procedure for planning and selecting a computer system appropriate for the organization's data processing requirements, and 4. Fritz, Godfried. "The relationship of sense of coherence to health and work in data processing personnel." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/16845.

Full text
Abstract:
Bibliography: pages 80-86.
The aim of the present study was to test a model of stress and to examine whether the theoretical construct of sense of coherence (SOC) moderated the relationship between stressors and health-related and work-related outcomes. This construct of SOC was identified by an Israeli medical sociologist, Antonovsky. He maintained that the current focus of research on stress is largely pathogenic in nature. He suggested that it would be of value to shift research more towards that which identifies the origins of health. He consequently developed the term "salutogenesis", which requires people to focus on those factors which promote well-being. He also argued that people are not either sick or well, but rather are located on a continuum between health-ease/dis-ease. With respect to their health, persons will find themselves somewhere along this continuum, where they may shift between the two positions. He then suggests that certain factors contribute to facilitating the movement along this continuum. These factors together form a construct which he calls the SOC. The SOC is comprised of core components. He hypothesizes that someone with a strong SOC is likely to make better sense of the world around him/her, thereby engendering resilience towards the impinging stressors. The person with a weak SOC is likely to capitulate to these stressors · more readily and by succumbing to them is going to increase the likelihood that (s)he will move to the dis-ease end of the continuum. This study attempted to investigate the following research questions, namely, whether (1) the stressors were related to the stress outcomes, (2) the SOC was related to the stressors and outcomes, and (3) the SOC moderated the relationships between stressors and outcomes. In the present study the subjects were drawn from all data processing professionals in a large financial organisation. The respondents (~ = 194) replied to a questionnaire which contained scales which measured a variety of job-related stressors, an SOC scale as well as job-related and health-related outcome variables. Intercorrelations between the stressor, moderator and outcome variables were calculated. Other statistical procedures that were utilized were subgroup analyses and the moderated multiple regression analyses. Partial support for all three research questions was obtained. Four of the six stressors were found to correlate significantly with somatic complaints, thereby suggesting that stressors result in persons feeling the results of stress and reporting them physically. The SOC was found to relate to some of the stressors and outcome variables. This would lend partial support to an interpretation of the SOC as having a main effect relationship to stressor and outcome variables. In the subgroup analyses the results showed that out of a possible 54 relationships, the SOC moderated in only seven of them that the moderated multiple regression (MMR) analyses showed out of 54 possible relationships, the SOC moderated in 12 of them health-related variables. Furthermore, the SOC moderated between six outcome variables and six work-related outcomes. These findings then partially support research question 3, which examined whether the SOC would moderate relationships between stressors and outcome variables. This study was concluded by a discussion of the findings, its implications, and the limitations of this research.

Miles, Shaun Graeme. "An investigation of issues of privacy, anonymity and multi-factor authentication in an open environment." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1006653.

Abstract:
This thesis performs an investigation into issues concerning the broad area ofIdentity and Access Management, with a focus on open environments. Through literature research the issues of privacy, anonymity and access control are identified. The issue of privacy is an inherent problem due to the nature of the digital network environment. Information can be duplicated and modified regardless of the wishes and intentions ofthe owner of that information unless proper measures are taken to secure the environment. Once information is published or divulged on the network, there is very little way of controlling the subsequent usage of that information. To address this issue a model for privacy is presented that follows the user centric paradigm of meta-identity. The lack of anonymity, where security measures can be thwarted through the observation of the environment, is a concern for users and systems. By an attacker observing the communication channel and monitoring the interactions between users and systems over a long enough period of time, it is possible to infer knowledge about the users and systems. This knowledge is used to build an identity profile of potential victims to be used in subsequent attacks. To address the problem, mechanisms for providing an acceptable level of anonymity while maintaining adequate accountability (from a legal standpoint) are explored. In terms of access control, the inherent weakness of single factor authentication mechanisms is discussed. The typical mechanism is the user-name and password pair, which provides a single point of failure. By increasing the factors used in authentication, the amount of work required to compromise the system increases non-linearly. Within an open network, several aspects hinder wide scale adoption and use of multi-factor authentication schemes, such as token management and the impact on usability. The framework is developed from a Utopian point of view, with the aim of being applicable to many situations as opposed to a single specific domain. The framework incorporates multi-factor authentication over multiple paths using mobile phones and GSM networks, and explores the usefulness of such an approach. The models are in tum analysed, providing a discussion into the assumptions made and the problems faced by each model.

Abstract:
Music Composition
D.M.A.
Transfigurations is a symphonic work in one movement for orchestra and live computer processing utilizing the graphical audio programming language Pure Data. The score and patch for this piece are accompanied by an essay describing the audio processing techniques and the compositional processes employed in this work. Programming methods discussed include strategies for data capture, patch structure, user interface, and processor management. All audio processing in the work is realized in realtime. These sounds are derived directly from the orchestra in performance, except for the last. The processes involved in Transfigurations include pitch and amplitude tracking, pitch-shifting, filtering, frequency and amplitude modulation, granular synthesis, delay, and convolution. The final sounds from the computer employ stochastic processes for synthesis which are derived from the germinal materials of the piece. The essay also discusses the aesthetic philosophy and formal structure of the work, principle themes and motives, and formative pitch materials, as well as the compositional processes in each section. The final discourse of the essay considers microphone and loudspeaker setups, patch preparation and leveling, and strategies for rehearsal and performance.

Maseti, Ophola S. "A model for role-based security education, training and awareness in the South African healthcare environment." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/724.

Abstract:
It is generally accepted that a business operates more efficiently when it is able to consolidate information from a variety of sources. This principle applies as much in the healthcare environment. Although limited in the South African context, the use of electronic systems to access information is advancing rapidly. Many aspects have to be considered in regards to such a high availability of information, for example, training people how to access and protect information, motivating them to use the systems and information extensively and effectively, ensuring adequate levels of security, confronting ethical issues and maintaining the availability of information at crucial times. This is especially true in the healthcare sector, where access to critical data is often vital. This data must be accessed by different kinds of people with different levels of access. However, accessibility often leads to vulnerabilities. The healthcare sector deals with very sensitive data. People’s medical records need to be kept confidential; hence, security is very important. Information of a very sensitive nature is exposed to human intervention on various levels (e.g. nurses, administrative staff, general practitioners and specialists). In this scenario, it is important for each person to be aware of the requirements in terms of security and privacy, especially from a legal perspective. Because of the large dependence on the human factor in maintaining information security, organisations must employ mechanisms that address this at the staff level. One such mechanism is information security education, training and awareness programmes. As the learner is the recipient of information in such a programme, it is increasingly important that it targets the audience that it is intended for. This will maximize the benefits achieved from such a programme. This can be achieved through following a role-based approach in the design and development of the SETA programme. This research therefore proposes a model for a role-based SETA programme, with the area of application being in the South African healthcare environment.

Abstract:
PLEXPLAN, an automated software system and methodology for Information Systems (IS) planning, is described. The PLEXPLAN methodology and tools are used to integrate information from multiple and dynamic perspectives on the organization. A conceptual and technical software architecture is described which permits storage, integration and manipulation of such information. The PLEXPLAN methodology is consistent with the PLEXPLAN software architecture inasmuch as specific techniques in the methodology are represented in the automated environment as tools. A case is presented where PLEXPLAN was used to address an Information Systems planning task. Use of the PLEXPLAN methodology and tools is specifically described as they relate to the case.
