Abstract:
In work aimed at developing methodologies for validation of estimates of the dietary intake of free-living individuals, Bingham and colleagues have examined the use of urinary nitrogen (UN) excretion as an index of protein intake (Bingham & Cummings, 1985; Bingham, 1994; Bingham et al. 1995). The basis of this approach is that in subjects in N equilibrium, N intake is assumed equal to N excretion. Thus, if N excretion is measured it should indicate N and dietary protein intakes. In practice, since most N excretion occurs via the urine, which is relatively simple to collect, Bingham and colleagues examined the relationship between 24 h UN and N intake (DN). They argued that in subjects on typical UK diets UN should bear a fixed relationship to DN, and measured it carefully in a group of subjects. They showed that in a group of eight individuals in which intake and N excretion were measured meticulously, UN was 81% DN (SD 2, range 78–83%). They argued that measurement of this ratio could be used to assess the validity of food intake measurement and concluded ‘In healthy individuals eating normal western diets, 24 h urine N from an 8 day collection verified for its completeness by the PABA check method, should establish urine N to within 81(SD 5)% of the habitual dietary intake, range 70–90%. If the dietary assessment from 18 days of records or 24 h recalls or the diet history falls within these limits, it can be stated that there is no evidence of interference with normal dietary habits, or of reporting errors….’ (Bingham & Cummings, 1985).

Abstract:
This article explores the use of an electronic FORUM in a social work diversity class as a way to increase and enhance outside discussions related to contemporary diversity issues. A total of 45 students from two different BSW programs participated in the FORUM. Students were encouraged to remain anonymous during the discussions to enhance the opportunity for honest dialogue. A five-point Likert scale was developed to measure students' perceptions about whether or not their participation in the FORUM was personally beneficial and how anonymity affected their responses. Overall, students felt positive about their experience with the electronic FORUM, and appreciated being able to express their opinions openly without fear of reprisal. They also reported an increased awareness about other cultures, customs, and beliefs.

Abstract:
In online discussion forums, users are more motivated to take part in discussions when observing other users’ participation—the effect of social influence among forum users. In this paper, we study how to utilize social influence for increasing the overall forum participation. To this end, we propose a mechanism to maximize user influence and boost participation by displaying forum threads to users. We formally define the participation maximization problem, and show that it is a special instance of the social welfare maximization problem with submodular utility functions and it is NP-hard. However, generic approximation algorithms is impracticable for real-world forums due to time complexity. Thus we design a heuristic algorithm, named Thread Allocation Based on Influence (TABI), to tackle the problem. Through extensive experiments using a dataset from a real-world online forum, we demonstrate that TABI consistently outperforms all other algorithms in maximizing participation. The results of this work demonstrates that current recommender systems can be made more effective by considering future influence propagations. The problem of participation maximization based on influence also opens a new direction in the study of social influence.

Abstract:
Many e-health projects fail to be implemented. We aimed to find a sustainable process of service user and health professional online discussions about e-health to facilitate implementation and identification of needed research. A previously piloted course compared Mental Health participants’ views with publications, identifying ‘quick wins’ and barriers to e-health implementation. This study explored this approach further in eight domains including Health Promotion, Mental Health, and Carers. Courses comprised webinar, 1-week closed discussion forum, and final webinar. Participants discussed 12 e-health topics. Course analysis identified that five out of eight domains ‘worked’. Participation was appreciated and service users influenced health professional thinking. The principle of service user–health professional online discussions to prepare for e-health implementation works for most domains, but the work of participant recruitment and forum management may make other methods, such as Tweetchats or courses hosted by existing forums where service users predominate, easier to sustain in the long term.

Abstract:
The purpose of this investigation was to analyze online discussions about parental leave in relation to the work lives and private lives of new fathers. A netnographic study of nearly 100 discussion threads from a freely accessible online forum for fathers was conducted. Data were coded, sorted, and categorized by qualitative similarities and differences. The results of the study indicate that new fathers seek Internet forums to discuss work-related topics. Parental leave can provoke worries and anxiety related to management and co-worker attitudes which can create concern that they should be back at work. The results are presented in two categories: (a) attitudes expressed by employers and colleagues and (b) leaving work but longing to be back. The phenomenon of parental leave for fathers is more complex than simply “for” or “against” attitudes. Fathers can use Internet forums to discuss their experiences, fears, and anxiety and provide reasonable accommodations for both work and family life.

Abstract:
Students in a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) interact with each other and the course staff through online discussion forums. While discussion forums play a central role in MOOCs, they also pose a challenge for instructors. The large number of student posts makes it difficult for an instructor to know where to intervene to answer questions, resolve issues, and provide feedback. In this work, we focus on automatically predicting speech acts in MOOC forum posts. Our speech act categories describe the purpose or function of the post in the ongoing discussion. Specifically, we address three main research questions. First, we investigate whether crowdsourced workers can reliably label MOOC forum posts using our speech act definitions. Second, we investigate whether our speech acts can help predict instructor interventions and assignment completion and performance. Finally, we investigate which types of features (derived from the post content, author, and surrounding context) are most effective for predicting our different speech act categories.

Abstract:
This article aims to analyse the arguments or reasons that participants in Croatian online forum subtopic named ‘Labiaplasty – labia correction’ put forward as motives for opting for a labiaplasty procedure or as a rationale for having the procedure done. The emphasis of the analysis will be on those reasons or arguments that were predicated on functionality (of the vulva). Functionality is understood both in terms of changes in – or the desire to change – specific physical sensations or limitations and in those aspects evident in the psychological, emotional or cognitive effects of thinking about the procedure or the procedure once performed. Given that the analytical part of the work focuses on analysing textual material (the content of posts on the forum), the fundamental methodological basis of this work is a feminist critical discourse analysis. The analysis points to two main conclusions. First, it is necessary to include a broader context in the discussion on labiaplasty. Second, an analysed online forum on labiaplasty functions primarily on supportive principles, and it does not support critical approaches that reveal more general gender inequality aspects.

Abstract:
This paper goes beyond the existing literature and explores the innovative topic of designing criterionreferenced assessment for online discussion forums. There are several benefits of embedding online discussion forums into subjects including engaging students in collaborative learning, and encouraging deeper analysis, critical thinking and reflection. Using the assessment principles of validity, reliability and transparency, this paper offers a range of practical strategies to tutors who plan to develop criterionreferenced assessment as opposed to norm-referenced assessment for online discussion forums, applies the assessment principles in the context of an undergraduate law subject, and exemplars a rubric for an online discussion forum in a work placement subject.

Abstract:
Discussion forums are a valuable source of information in educational platforms such as Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), as users can exchange opinions or even help other students in an asynchronous way, contributing to the sustainability of MOOCs even with low interaction from the instructor. Therefore, the use of the forum messages to get insights about students’ performance in a course is interesting. This article presents an automatic grading approach that can be used to assess learners through their interactions in the forum. The approach is based on the combination of three dimensions: (1) the quality of the content of the interactions, (2) the impact of the interactions, and (3) the user’s activity in the forum. The evaluation of the approach compares the assessment by experts with the automatic assessment obtaining a high accuracy of 0.8068 and Normalized Root Mean Square Error (NRMSE) of 0.1799, which outperforms previous existing approaches. Future research work can try to improve the automatic grading by the training of the indicators of the approach depending on the MOOCs or the combination with text mining techniques.

Abstract:
How can we model arguments and their dynamics in online forum discussions? The meteoric rise of online forums presents researchers across different disciplines with an unprecedented opportunity: we have access to texts containing discourse between groups of users generated in a voluntary and organic fashion. Most prior work so far has focused on classifying individual monological comments as either argumentative or not argumentative. However, few efforts quantify and describe the dialogical processes between users found in online forum discourse: the structure and content of interpersonal argumentation. Modeling dialogical discourse requires the ability to identify the presence of arguments, group them into clusters, and summarize the content and nature of clusters of arguments within a discussion thread in the forum. In this work, we develop ArguSense, a comprehensive and systematic framework for understanding arguments and debate in online forums. Our framework consists of methods for, among other things: (a) detecting argument topics in an unsupervised manner; (b) describing the structure of arguments within threads with powerful visualizations; and (c) quantifying the content and diversity of threads using argument similarity and clustering algorithms. We showcase our approach by analyzing the discussions of four communities on the Reddit platform over a span of 21 months. Specifically, we analyze the structure and content of threads related to GMOs in forums related to agriculture or farming to demonstrate the value of our framework.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to discuss the recent emergence of multilateral forums for African development. By focusing on the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) led by the Japanese Government, the paper considers key issues and challenges that this new type of multilateral forum may face. Design/methodology/approach The paper reviews the existing literature in an interdisciplinary manner. To illustrate the multiplicity of issues and highlight diverse viewpoints, the study also provides an overview of a panel discussion at the fifth TICAD meeting as an exemplar by using a coding method. Findings The study suggests that a multilateral forum based on policy dialogue between a single donor and multiple recipients is likely to not only pose extremely complex tasks for the donor nation but also potentially constrain aid effectiveness in African countries unless the recipients’ ownership of their development is properly identified through sensible leadership. Originality/value Although “one donor–multiple African countries” forums are on the rise across the world, this paper calls for careful examination of the effectiveness of new type of multilateral forums for Africa. Through the evaluation of the contribution of TICAD, which is the pioneer for this kind of forum, this paper sets out essential elements to be considered by researchers and policymakers for the development of Africa.

Abstract:
Few studies have examined social work student outcomes after engagement in interprofessional (IP) learning experiences. We examined self-reported attitudes and skills self-efficacy among social work students before and after their engagement in IP Forums. The data comes from social work students who participated in 2016-2018 Fall IP Forums focusing on opioid use disorder. Using the Interprofessional Attitudes Scale (IPAS) and the Interprofessional Collaborative Competency Attainment Scale, revised (ICCAS), we assessed students’ self-reported attitudes (IPAS) and skills self-efficacy (ICCAS) before and after the Fall IP Forums. Paired t-tests identified significant changes in IPAS and ICCAS scores. Students reported increases in their IP attitudes and skills self-efficacy following participation in the IP Forum as measured by pre-IPAS score (n=236, M=4.56, SD=0.29) to post-IPAS score (M=4.68, SD=0.27; t(156)=-5.31, p<.001). Post-ICCAS score also increased (n=48, M=4.26, SD=0.69; t(33)= -5.75, p<.001) from the pre-ICCAS score (M=3.55, SD=0.92). The 2015 Council on Social Work Education Accreditation Standards require that social work students learn how to value and engage in interprofessional teams. Given the self-reported increases in IP attitudes and skills self-efficacy seen in this study, IP Forum participation will help foster greater engagement and contribution to overall IP experiences for social work students.

Abstract:
Discussion forums on the web concern a large number of subjects such as domestic life (recipes and cooking), intimate life (pregnancy and sex life) or intellectual life (scientific subjects, school homework). Our study focuses on the analysis of the messages exchanged on the forums alfemminile.com, aufemminin. com, skuola.net, doctissimo.it and doctissimo.fr and its aim is therefore to examine, from a linguistic point of view, a type of network communication, discussion forums. While the research falls within the scope of analyzing the specifics of computer-mediated communication (CMO), it also helps to identify the diversity of writing practices with regard to the standard. Moreover it allows us to enrich our knowledge on the situation of text production, on writing, on reading text but also on the fictitious identity adopted by users such as genderswapping. This work, in a more general framework, will make it possible to know the trends in writing, which now integrates different semiotic forms, and finally to reflect on the influence of the medium on the very nature of the messages and the limits of this influence.

Abstract:
This paper is about the place that love of the activities they engage in has in a student's school education. After examining what it is to love an activity, the discussion turns to its place in school education as it might be. Given the role of human flourishing in the school's overall aims, the paper looks first at how this is related to love. It then argues that one task of the school should be to reveal to students the many forms of activities they may choose to love and to encourage them in the choices they make. A final section contrasts this account with a snapshot of the place of love in the work-oriented schools that we have today, and makes some final suggestions about possibilities, at a time when paid work is about to get harder to find, for pursuing activities that one loves.

Abstract:
Considering the benefit of applying e-learning for teaching and learning, such as sharing ideas, seeking input, and giving feedback and clarification, one approach is an online discussion forum that provides learners with a wide opportunity to exchange and work collaboratively. In fact, some researchers have also advocated using collaborative learning activities. Considering the benefits of using online discussion forums and collaborative learning, especially the online discussion forum, this study focuses on preservice teachers using online discussion forums in General English. The aims were to analyze the knowledge construction that can occur while having a discussion and it was done by examining transcripts with the Interactive Analysis Model. In addition, this study also analyzed learners’ collaborative behavior working in groups. The results revealed that most of the exchanges occurred in Phase 1: Sharing and comparing information, i.e., 39% for Topic 1: Favorite places, and 64% for Topic 2: Traveling plan, and the fewest exchanges were in Phase 5 (Application of newly constructed knowledge) that had 6% for both Topic 1 and Topic 2. To conclude, this study describes various knowledge construction and collaborative behavior phases. Further research in the online learning environment is needed to identify preservice teachers' learning needs and obstacles in cognitive and social-economic issues.

Abstract:
Self-publication of news on Web sites is becoming a common application platform to enable more engaging interaction among users. Discussion in the form of comments following news postings can be effectively facilitated if the service provider can recommend articles based on not only the original news itself but also the thread of changing comments. This turns the traditional news recommendation to a "discussion moderator" that can intelligently assist online forums. In this work, we present a framework to implement such adaptive news recommendation. In addition, to alleviate the problem of recommending essentially identical articles, the relationship (duplication, generalization or specialization) between suggested news articles and the original posting is investigated. Experiments indicate that our proposed solutions provide an enhanced news recommendation service in forum-based social media.

Abstract:
MOOCs (massive open online courses) have a built-in forum where learners can share experiences as well as ask questions and get answers. Nevertheless, the work of the learners in the MOOC forum is usually not taken into account when calculating their grade in the course, due to the difficulty of automating the calculation of that grade in a context with a very large number of learners. In some situations, discussion forums might even be the only available evidence to grade learners. In other situations, forum interactions could serve as a complement for calculating the grade in addition to traditional summative assessment activities. This paper proposes an algorithm to automatically calculate learners’ grades in the MOOC forum, considering both the quantitative dimension and the relevance in their contributions. In addition, the algorithm has been implemented within a web application, providing instructors with a visual and a numerical representation of the grade for each learner. An exploratory analysis is carried out to assess the algorithm and the tool with a MOOC on programming, obtaining a moderate positive correlation between the forum grades provided by the algorithm and the grades obtained through the summative assessment activities. Nevertheless, the complementary analysis conducted indicates that this correlation may not be enough to use the forum grades as predictors of the grades obtained through summative assessment activities.

Abstract:
Abstract Despite the rapid growth of other types of social media, Internet discussion forums remain a highly popular communication channel and a useful source of text data for analyzing user interests and sentiments. Being suited to richer, deeper, and longer discussions than microblogging services, they particularly well reflect topics of long-term, persisting involvement and areas of specialized knowledge or experience. Discovering and characterizing such topics and areas by text mining algorithms is therefore an interesting and useful research direction. This work presents a case study in which selected classification algorithms are applied to posts from a Polish discussion forum devoted to psychoactive substances received from home-grown plants, such as hashish or marijuana. The utility of two different vector text representations is examined: the simple bag of words representation and the more refined embedded global vectors one. While the former is found to work well for the multinomial naive Bayes algorithm, the latter turns out more useful for other classification algorithms: logistic regression, SVMs, and random forests. The obtained results suggest that post-classification can be applied for measuring publication intensity of particular topics and, in the case of forums related to psychoactive substances, for monitoring the risk of drug-related crime.

Abstract:
This research aimed to show how Instagram could be used to improve students' motivation to collaborate and how discussing with friends could influence their motivation to be involved in collaborating. This research was conducted knowing that the students’ low motivation in collaboration impacted their activeness in class participation, work results, and low quality of social interactions. This study was classroom action research in two Grade 11 classes as the actual action sites. To collect the data, the researchers interviewed six students in both classes. The ARCS Model by Keller (2023) was used as a framework to answer the research questions: ‘How can Instagram be used to enhance students' collaboration motivation in an interactive online discussion forum? and ‘How can discussions with friends on social media influence student motivation and involvement in collaborative English language learning? The framework was chosen because it was designed to increase students' learning motivation and focused on attention, relevance, confidence, and satisfaction. This study found that Instagram could improve students’ motivation to collaborate in online discussion forums. Further, the platform transformed passive participants or shy students into active participants to were involved in class collaborations.

Abstract:
In this article we develop the notion of 'organising around ideas'. We highlight the ways in which education debate in England has narrowed as traditional spaces for discussion and debate have been closed down. The state now has extraordinary power to shape discourses and frame narratives about the purposes of schooling. Here we argue that we must find new ways to engage in the battle of ideas, not simply as an exercise in rational argument, but as an essential element of organising and movement building. The article provides three short case studies of 'organising around ideas' in action to illustrate what this work can look like. The cases are not templates, but illustrate the flexible, grassroots-based activity that is central to building a movement from the bottom up.

Abstract:
Background Crohn's disease and colitis are chronic conditions that affect every facet of patients' lives (e.g., social interaction, family, work, diet, and sleep). Thus, treatment consists largely of disease management. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill chapter of the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation—IBD Partners—has created an interactive website that, in addition to providing helpful information and disease management tools, provides a discussion forum for patients to talk about their experiences and suggest new lines of research into Crohn's disease and colitis. Objectives The primary objective of this work is to enable researchers to more effectively browse the forum content. Researchers wish to identify important/popular patient-suggested research topics, appreciate the full breadth of the research topics, and see connections between them, in order to more effectively prioritize research agendas. Methods To help structure the forum content we have developed an ontology describing the major themes in the discussion forum. We have also created a prototype interactive visualization tool that leverages the ontology to help researchers identify common themes and related patient-generated research topics via linked views of (1) the ontology, (2) a research topic overview clustered by relevant ontology terms, and (3) a detailed view of the discussion forum content. Results We discuss visualizations and interactions enabled by the visualization tool, provide an example scenario using the tool, and discuss limitations and future work based on feedback from potential users. Conclusion The integration of a user-community specific ontology with an interactive visualization tool is a promising approach for enabling researchers to more effectively study user-generated research questions.

Abstract:
Nuclear power forms part of the first-year physics undergraduate course work in the extended curriculum program at the University of the Western Cape. This investigation intends to assist students in mastering their understanding of how nuclear power works through the development of critical thinking skills around the topic and to create awareness among students of the implications of expanding a nuclear power footprint. Through debate, students in this course investigate the impact of South Africa increasing its nuclear footprint within a global context. In this work, students were encouraged to explore publications and reputable websites surrounding this topic and based on their findings formulate arguments. The authors conceptualized and developed a Sakai tool (based on Learning Tools Interoperability), called Reference Register (RR) to compliment the work. RR stores the reference uploaded by each student, shares uploaded literature resources to the group members, and quantifies the number of times a student uses a reference when presenting their argument. The incorporation of the RR was intended to encourage students to formulate arguments based on well-founded literature. Authors sort to investigate in which ways and to what extent does an online discussion forum facilitate students becoming ethically, environmentally, and socially aware in the area of nuclear energy and to assist students in becoming better in their professional communication skills. The outcome of this student engagement included students becoming familiar with what constitutes a well-formulated scientific argument based on a literature review, group engagement, becoming aware of South African current affairs regarding nuclear power, and its social and economic impact.

Abstract:
Purpose. Analysis of manifestations of imitative behavior among participants of “Organized tourism” forums. Methods. The survey was conducted using the virtual ethnography method, which belongs to the group of qualitative methods. The discussion forum on the “Gazeta.pl” website was analyzed, in particular 90 conversations were categorized according to three criteria: theme, stage of the decision making process and needs of the person who initialized a discussion. The next step was to find the content in different threads, so that an answer to the research questions could be found. Findings. The study shows that imitative behavior is often manifested as positive or negative identification, due to the fact that the imitation among discussion forum users was caused by a need to obtain information. However, there are entries that might indicate the existence of a “demonstrative effect”. Studies have shown that in different phases of the tourist experience, different imitative behaviour is manifested. Discussion forums are an important source of tourist information for its users because they aim to preserve its credibility. Research and conclusions limitations. The method that was used does not allow for generalization of the results. Practical implications. Studies have shown that forums are important sources of tourist information for its users. It can also be a source of knowledge about consumers for travel agencies. The results of this study should encourage tourism marketers to modify their tools for information distribution towards greater usage of social media and cooperating with reference individuals or groups. Oryginality. The work fills a gap in literature on the consumers of tourism products and their manifestations of imitative behavior Type of paper. A research paper.

Abstract:
The Conference of Directors of National Libraries (CDNL) was set up in 1974 to discuss policies and to carry out activities that could be performed most effectively by national libraries, on the understanding that its work would be coordinated with the IFLA Section of National Libraries. Major projects have been concerned with such issues as the role of national libraries; machine-readable record transfer; financial management practices in national libraries; legal deposit and electronic publishing; a voucher system for international lending; and twinning of national libraries. Among its achievements have been the holding of an international conference on preservation; the creation of working groups on managing the preservation of serial literature, and on international lending of alternative format materials such as talking books; and the establishment of a Task Force on Issues Relating to Bibliographic Records. CDNL responded to the fire at the Library of the Academy of Sciences in Leningrad in 1988, thus fulfilling one of its initial aims of simplifying cooperation among library directors. CDNL's membership stands at well over 100. Regional CDNLs have been formed in Southern Africa, Europe, Asia/Oceania and Latin America.

Abstract:
The article is an analytical analysis of the results of scientific and practical events held within the framework of the V St Petersburg Labor Forum, held on April 19–23, 2021. The main subject of discussion at the Forum were problems of attracting to work and the use of public labor in conditions of an emerging socio-economic reality, in which a significant factor was the coronavirus pandemic. Within the framework of the Forum, two international scientific conferences were held, as well as a number of roundtables and discussion platforms. The discussions made it possible to formulate a number of practical proposals for improving Russian legislation (in the field of digitalization, labor, and employment), the national personnel training system, in the field of youth policy and education, in the field of taxation, legal regulation of international labor migration. The Forum developed proposals to improve the system of state management of labor and labor resources at the federal and regional levels (in the field of regulation of labor migration, development of the National Qualifications System, regulation of the quality of working life), as well as improving the efficiency of management activities of commercial legal entities (organizations), educational organizations. The Forum developed and proposed directions of promising fundamental and applied research in the field of labor and human capital development, including, in particular, such problems as the impact of the digital transformation of society on the labor market in the Russian Federation: economic and legal aspects; development of the national system of professional qualifications of the Russian Federation in the context of the transition to the digital economy and digital society; development of a methodology for combining professional standards and federal state educational standards; analysis of the practices of applying the regulatory framework for regulating remuneration systems in remote work and hybrid forms of labor organization; assessment of the effectiveness of labor legislation in the context of ensuring a balance of private and public interests in the social and labor sphere.

Abstract:
From the semiotic point of view, folklore tradition is transmitting culturally and socially significant messages via oral communication channels. Strong interrelation to dynamic interaction of people in vernacular contexts (as opposed to rigid institutional channels and static social structures) is one of folklore’s primary characteristics. With this perception of folklore tradition, folklore studies become a disciplinary area that accumulates unique research experience both on comprehension of transmitted messages and on methodological principles of working with texts and mechanisms of their transmission. This allows us to suggest that in research practice in neighboring fields two variants of transference of folklore studies’ theoretical resources may prove productive: according to presence of folklore elements in the studied material and according to general principles of working with texts (in the broad semiotic sense of the word). The participants of the forum, all of them researchers with extensive experience in field work as well as in theoretical comprehension of oral tradition – were offered various problems for discussion. These problems included, but were not limited to, the boundaries of folklore studies’ object field, employing folklore studies’ methodological tools for analysis of other disciplinary fields’ objects, interaction of folklore studies with other academic disciplines, etc.

Abstract:
Purpose: Hyperacusis is commonly defined as reduced tolerance to everyday sounds leading to avoidance behavior and disrupting normal functioning. Hyperacusis is prevalent in children. However, the literature on the manifestation and impact of hyperacusis on children is scant. This qualitative study examined online discussion forums to understand the lived experiences of hyperacusis in children from a parent or carer perspective. Method: Posts from publicly available online discussion forums were thematically analyzed. Online searching identified 219 potentially relevant conversation threads across 18 forums and involving 1,436 forum users. A total number of 170 eligible conversation threads, containing 1,834 messages, were used in the analysis. Results: Thematic analysis of the data generated six themes: personal and health information about the child, onset and prognosis, bothersome sounds and characteristics, reactions, coping strategies, and impact. Hyperacusis onset was associated with loud noise, physical trauma, or stress. Bothersome sounds were categorized in terms of appliances, vehicles, public places, nature, and very loud sounds. Children's reactions included panic, shaking, and screaming. Strategies to manage hyperacusis included ear defenders, building up tolerance, and school adaptations. Hyperacusis had an impact on various aspects of the child's life including academic performance and social development. Conclusions: This is the first study to account for the lived experiences of children experiencing hyperacusis from a parent/carer perspective using online forum data. These findings expand on existing research on the manifestation of hyperacusis in children and provide a basis for further work improving clinical assessment and management.

Abstract:
The knowledge provided by user communities in question-answering (QA) forums is a highly valuable source of information for satisfying user information needs. However, finding the best answer for a posted question can be challenging. User-generated content in forums can be of unequal quality given the free nature of natural language and the varied levels of user expertise. Answers to a question posted in a forum are compiled in a discussion thread, concentrating also posterior activity such as comments and votes. There are usually multiple reasons why an answer successfully fulfills a certain information need and gets accepted as the best answer among a (possibly) high number of answers. In this work, we study the influence that different aspects of answers have on the prediction of the best answers in a QA forum. We collected the discussion threads of a real-world forum concerning computer programming, and we evaluated different features for representing the answers and the context in which they appear in a thread. Multiple classification models were used to compare the performance of the different features, finding that readability is one of the most important factors for detecting the best answers. The goal of this study is to shed some light on the reasons why answers are more likely to receive more votes and be selected as the best answer for a posted question. Such knowledge enables users to enhance their answers which leads, in turn, to an improvement in the overall quality of the content produced in a platform.

Abstract:
Online group discussion is a typical learning activity in academic English lessons at universities. Students exchange research ideas and evaluate each other's work. However, many non-English major undergraduates experience challenges in expressing their opinions and developing arguments during this discussion process. Stance analysis is a crucial linguistic tool for obtaining an understanding of how participants express their ideas. Using the stance framework proposed by Biber (2006), the aim of this study was to examine the main grammatical markers and relevant semantic categories found in written online group discussions. We intended to investigate the expressions of the writer's stance (such as stance adverbials, stance nouns, stance adjectives, and stance verbs) in academic group discussions by analyzing a corpus of texts from an online discussion within a university setting from a forum. A total of 34 online group discussions with a combined word count of 199,559 contributed by 187 Hong Kong Chinese undergraduate students comprised the dataset. To pinpoint stance lexical items that appeared in particular grammatical frames, the frequencies and roles of stance expressions were calculated and thoroughly examined. The results demonstrated that the most widely used grammatical stance expressions in these academic discourses to convey attitudes and opinions were stance adverbials and stance verbs. By examining the linguistic resources used by non-English major students to express their perspectives and attitudes, as well as how stance is manifested in the context of academic online discussions, this study provides insights for both linguistics and education.

Abstract:
OBJECTIVES/GOALS: The Community Engagement Forum (CEF), a quarterly series hosted by the Colorado Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CCTSI) and the ACCORDS Education program, provides seminars from leading academic and community research partners. Our goal is to share the process and outcomes so others may implement a similar forum in their institution. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: In 2019, CCTSI and the ACCORDS Education Program partnered to offer a forum to exchange best practices for investigators and study teams conducting community-engaged research. Each forum features presenters from community and academic partnerships. Initially this series was offered in-person; during the COVID-19 Pandemic the Forum moved online. At registration we collect data on current position, school/department or organization, and how they heard about the forum. Post session evaluations are also collected. Various topics have been covered including: community engagement foundations, creating advisory boards, responding appropriately to community needs in a pandemic, data equity, and community dissemination. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: Between October 2019 and October 2022, we hosted twelve Community Engagement Forums. A total of 442 people have attended the forums, with the School of Medicine having the highest representation. Among attendees, university research staff are the highest represented position in attendance, with 115 attendees over the 12 forums. 133 people have completed evaluation questions since the start of the forum series. High percentages of agreement were seen from the question, will you use this information to make adjustments/improvements or continue the conversation . Additionally, most respondents agreed that the presentations were useful to their current or future work. DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE: The CEF series has filled a gap for desired resources related to best practices for community-engaged research. CCTSI CE&HC and ACCORDS Education have created a learning community for investigators and study teams to share lessons learned and provide opportunities for trouble-shooting research ideas as they arise.

Abstract:
Given an online forum, how can we quantify changes in user affect towards a person or an idea over time? We argue that online political forums constitute an untapped opportunity for understanding sentiment toward aspects under discussion. However, the analysis of such forums has received little attention from the research community. In this paper, we develop RAFFMAN, a systematic approach to quantify the impact of external events on the affect of forum users towards a concept, such as a person or an entity. First, we develop an approach to capture and quantify the observed activity: we identify related keywords, filter threads, and establish correlations between events and spikes in the activity. Second, we modify and evaluate state-of-the-art NLP techniques to achieve high accuracy (74%) in a three-class sentiment classification problem. As a case study, we deploy our method to quantify the effect of President Trump’s impeachment on several concepts including: President Trump, Speaker Pelosi, and QAnon. Our data consists of 32M posts from Reddit and 4chan over a span of 6 months from September 2019 to February 2020. This initial analysis hints at an increase in political polarization, especially for people’s affect towards the President. Overall, our work is a building block towards mining the affect of online forum user towards a concept, which constitutes a untapped, massive, and publicly-available source of information.

Abstract:
OBJECTIVES/GOALS: The mission of our new Anti-racism in Data and Analysis seminar series is to provide a forum for researchers to discuss the ways that race and racism show up in data and analysis so that we as scientists may work together to advance racial equity and justice in society. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: Our CTSA’s Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Research Design (BERD) Program has initiated a seminar series that focuses on the ways that race and racism show up in all phases of the research process. We have hosted guest speakers who have shared their cutting-edge research as well as their reflections on race in research, and have facilitated breakout discussions to provide a forum for researchers to discuss specific questions. Our seminars are intended for practicing clinicians, clinical and population researchers, basic scientists, students, and others. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: We have sponsored three discussion-based seminars and two guest speaker seminars, and have several seminars of each type in the planning stages. We have collaborated with another CTSA to sponsor a discussion-based seminar at their institution, thus outfitting them with the tools to initiate a seminar series of their own. Our seminars have been extremely well attended, attracting researchers from a broad base of departments at our institution, from students to full professors. Feedback has been very positive; complaints cluster around paucity of similar opportunities, and students have asked why such material is not included as a required part of their respective training programs. DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE: Race and racism permeate research, and failure to recognize and address the issues involved perpetuates racism in our society. Researchers want to learn more, but there are few opportunities for them to do so. Our seminar series provides one such forum to researchers at our institution and beyond.

Abstract:
According to habermas, public space is a space where citizens can negotiate about their relations so that it is an institutional arena for interaction. The development of increasingly advanced communication media has resulted in a large amount of public space being carried out online through social media to discuss public issues with the aim of creating a democracy. This study aims to determine the analysis of habermas democracy in the text of the online discussion forum of the omnibus law ruu as democracy. The labor law omnibus is still a polemic in the community because on the one hand it is considered to be beneficial for employers and increasingly marginalizes workers / laborers with an hourly wage system plan which is considered by workers to weaken the position and welfare of workers / workers. This research uses analytical methods in the perspective of communication on deliberative democracy and based on two habermas theories of Structural Transformation of Public Spaces & Between Facts and Norms. This discourse analysis model is based on 3 blades of communicative action analysis that includes 3 claims. The data collection technique is a text method in the form of opinions submitted by members of the online discussion group "Work Draft Bill: Threatening Indonesian Employment and Agriculture" and "Work Draft Bill: Breaking Through Indonesian Law?". Each argument / opinion is analyzed based on three validity claims, namely: truth. accuracy, and honesty. The results of this study are based on text analysis that burdensome parties from laborers, students, farmers, fishermen, indigenous peoples, rural and urban residents, and prioritizes the interests of investors and entrepreneurs

Abstract:
Purpose: This study explored ESL learners’ utilization of Online Discussion Forums (ODFs) in Interactive Reading for Academic Disciplines (iREAD) to assist reading of online scientific texts within an English for Specific Purposes course at a public university. Method: This qualitative research employed two data collection methods during lessons of a 14-week semester. The first was analysis of ODF threads in iREAD from 30 ESL learners of various engineering programs at a public university in the East coast of Malaysia. Twelve from 30 ESL students were purposively selected to participate in focus group interviews. Interactive Analysis Model was used to analyse the threads, whilst the interviews transcripts were analysed thematically. NVivo Pro 12 software was used to manage the data and the generated themes were later analysed using inter-rater reliability analysis. The Kappa values of the themes indicated near perfect scores, to verify the reliability of the identified themes. Findings: The findings revealed the positive capability of ODF as a tool in facilitating learners’ reading comprehension of English for Science and Technical (EST) online materials. Analysis of the data on ODF threads confirm that students have the capabilities to engage in higher level of discussions and debate to aid their understanding. The themes that emerged from the interviews reflect positive impacts to facilitate reading of EST online materials, where learners were able to work collaboratively and increase knowledge and understand better. In addition, significance of EST materials was important in providing exposure to students’ background knowledge of their content courses. The notion of social constructivism and connectivism were reflected as learners constructed knowledge, negotiated, and synthesized ideas using the language across networked learning communities. Significance: An implication from this study suggests that exposure to EST online materials through communication and collaboration via ODF has strengthened students’ knowledge of the subject content. Additionally, learners’ comprehension of reading online EST materials has been enhanced through ODF because of the tool’s interactive heuristic approach to learning. This becomes significant for program developers and lecturers to combine both elements of ODF and material selection in lessons considering its positive impacts toward learning.

Abstract:
Workplace learning experience complements students' learning at the university and equips them with practical skills required in professional work contexts. Given its importance, educators must constantly devise strategies to enhance students' workplace learning and collect contextual data to determine how best to support them in collaboration with the internship sites. In this study, we adopted the online discussion forum to supplement undergraduate students' workplace learning in a semi-private Emirati university through reflection and workplace knowledge sharing with colleagues asynchronously. Using a qualitative approach, we ethically retrieved and thematically analyzed students' contributions to the online discussion forum. Our findings indicate that students found the orientation week beneficial and the knowledge gained at the university, such as communication and information technology, resourceful. Additionally, students found integration into the new context, time management, language issues, and emailing challenging. Despite the reported challenges, students indicated that the workplace learning experience strengthened their practical skills, including managing time, working with different people, and communicating within different contexts to smooth their transition to professional work contexts. Based on the findings, we suggest using online discussion to supplement workplace learning as an essential element for educators to consider when developing programs. We also recommend pre-internship orientations where expectations, roles, and required knowledge are discussed to prepare students for successful workplace learning experiences.

Abstract:
This study considers three methodological orientations for reading the narrative of collaboration taken root in contemporary discussions around publicly funded education in Canada. It looks through and beyond conflict theory and an archaeological historical approach and turns to a discursive method well suited to close analysis of recorded, text-based exchanges. Selecting discursive psychology and conversation analysis as preferred interpretive tools, it samples an exchange from an institutional interaction between a researcher, a teacher, and two parents in an online discussion forum. The analysis highlights the multiplicity of agendas and work generated across stakeholders by what is ostensibly one shared goal.

Abstract:
Relevance. The article shows that the adequate holistic image of the child is a necessary condition for successful pedagogical activity. Purpose is to study the actual image of the child in the minds of students who are beginning to prepare for pedagogical activities. Research methods and sample. The study was conducted during the seminar by the method of content analysis of associations with the image of the child in students who chose a teacher career. Work on the concept of “Child” was based on the principle of actualization of students’ associations with the image of the child. Students developed their associations, presented them at the general plenum. The discussion was based on the principle of highlighting the main / general, unexpected / singular in the ideas about the child, the risks and resources of modern childhood Main results. The main characteristics of the child’s image obtained in the course of content analysis are: . a scarce approach to the child as a non-reliable, immature being; . the child’s dependence on others, adults with parents mentioned very rarely; . lack of interconnection of children, absence of the category of friendship and “horizontal” ties; . understanding the child as a contradictory and complex being; in this approach, the value judgments of “good-bad” are strong; .the child as a real developing subject, revealing potential. The main risks for the development of the child, according to students are: . risks associated with various types of violence against the child: physical, verbal, pedagogical; . fear, fearfulness, anxiety, uncertainty, helplessness; . external negative circumstances of life: instability, injustice, negative people and the development environment, helplessness; . risks coming from the child himself, his youth and inexperience: recklessness, unselfi shness, unwillingness of the child, irresponsibility, closeness. Conclusion. Some approaches to the formation of an adequate image of the child are described.

Abstract:
There is currently much research activity involving virtual environments (VEs) and spatial behavior (spatial perception, cognition, and performance). After some initial remarks describing and categorizing the different types of research being conducted on VEs and spatial behavior, discussion in this Forum paper focuses on one specific type, namely, research concerned with the use of VE technology for training spatial behavior in the real world. We initially present an overview of issues and problems relevant to conducting research in this area, and then, in the latter portion of the paper, present an overview of the research that we believe needs to be done in this area. We have written this paper for the forum section of Presence because, despite its length, it is essentially an opinion piece. Our aim here is not to report the results of research in our own laboratory nor to review the literature, as other available papers already serve these goals. Rather, the primary purpose of this paper is to stimulate open discussion about needed future research. In general, we believe that such a discussion can serve the research establishment as much as reports of completed work.

Abstract:
The purpose of this session(s) is to attempt a novel forum for bridging the researcher/practitioner dichotomy that divides the human factors professional community. The objective of this session(s) is to convene a group of attendees to formulate a detailed list of critical human factors research needs. Attendees will suggest and discuss critical needs they have for human factors data, research, and analyses. The purpose of discussion will be to embellish and clarify initial suggestions, rather than to limit or discourage specific suggestions. This is not a forum for researchers to discuss their work, but rather a forum for practitioners to discuss their current work and the informational needs that serve as barriers to their effectiveness. Individual Technical Groups co-sponsored component discussions as a means for targeting their application areas of interest. The Strategic Planning Focus Groups held at the 1995 Annual Meeting served as the model for interaction among attendees. A publication will be produced following the Annual Meeting which identifies critical human factors research needs, based on direct input from industry practitioners– the direct consumers of such research. As such, it differs from similar publications extant (e.g., those of the National Research Council) which are driven by researchers' perceptions of research needs. By using the interactive “focus group” format that was so successful at the 1995 Annual Meeting, it is anticipated that this session will be able to make great strides toward bridging the research/practice gap that currently exists in the human factors profession.
