Abstract:
The purpose of the article is to investigate the characteristic lexical means (linguistic features) of German jokes based on literary material and to determine the principles that apply to the creation of German jokes in the texts considered. The object of research in this work is an anecdote as an element of German culture, folklore, language, literature. In view of the small volume of the article, we have considered only the anecdotes of the German origin (without anecdotes of other countries about the Germans). The subject of the study is the lexical composition, the linguistic features of the German joke. We have thrown light upon the provisions that formed the basis of practical research. The author considers the lexical tools used to create a German anecdote and reinforces the results with tables with data from frequency lists. The result of the study: 1) the structure and distribution of lexical units in the text of German anecdotes were investigated; 2) the lexical composition of the selected anecdotes was perused; 3) the originality of lexical units used to create anecdotes was considered; 4) the functional features of the lexical units used to create studied German anecdotes are determined. Conclusions: Most German anecdotes are based on the principle of participation of contrasting persons (man — woman, adults (parents) — children, spouses — lovers, etc.); the most commonly used words in German anecdotes mean actions reflecting the dynamics (movement), activity, emotionality; German jokes are mostly dialogue. The practical application of the research results is the use of an anecdote as an element in the different studies of German culture, folklore, language, literature, linguistic education, psycholinguistics, linguoculturology.

Abstract:
The article discusses specific features of the anecdote as a speech genre, analyzes communicative-pragmatic principles of creating a comic effect in anecdotes based on the wordplay. It is noted that the concept of «anecdote», despite the fact that it is widely used in modern literary criticism and linguistics, does not have a single interpretation and a precise theoretical definition, which is explained by its genre uniqueness and complexity of a cognitive-pragmatic nature. It is emphasized that the most important part of the work of this genre is its finale, originally known to the narrator. It is the last climax phrase that contains the unexpected and unpredictable final semantic resolution that constitutes the anecdote as such. Among the features inherent in the actual anecdotal texts are: small volume, lack of authorship, reproducibility, indefinite chronotope, stereotypicality of plot schemes, relatively constant set of characters, ambivalence of the meaning of language units, intertextuality, situational functioning, etc. The dominant category of the anecdote text is minimalism, manifested in the choice of details, the number of heroes, laconic form, the volume of compositional components. It is stated that formation of the types of anecdotes took place along two lines: folk and literary. A modern anecdote, in contrast to the literary jokes of previous years, as a rule, is a speech genre, not a literary one, which determines its specificity. It is noted that anecdotes are divided into situational (subject, referential), in which the comic nature of the described situation is not related to the linguistic design, and language (linguistic), which are based on the playing out of certain linguistic phenomena. The comic effect in the latter is based on purely linguistic mechanisms and depends on the choice of the used speech means. An integral part of creating a comic effect in linguistic anecdotes is violation of certain norms, or incongruence, in the implementation of which the leading role is played by the language game. The game potential of phonetic, lexical, word-building, morphological and syntactic means, as well as precedent phenomena involved in speech works of this type are described. Particular attention is paid to punning outplaying of polysemy and various types of homonymy as one of the most popular means of creating a language joke. It is concluded that peculiarity of the game means, used for creating a humorous effect, lies in their function: they have an additional evaluative connotation, express different degrees of negative loading and take part in creating comic ambiguity in the statement.

Abstract:
The problem of the development of a small literary genre of historical anecdote in Russia in the second half of the 18th century is researched. The question is raised on the manuscript of the translation of “Genuine anecdotes about Peter the Great” by Academician J. Shtelin (1709—1785) into Russian, which was made by the famous person of the Age of Enlightenment A. A. Nartov (1736/1737—1813) in 1785. The relevance of the study is due to the fact that the article is the first study of the manuscript, which remained unpublished and was not the subject of research. It is proved that Nartov’s translation of Shtelin’s work became an impetus for him to create his own historical and literary work, now known as Nartov’s Tales of Peter the Great (1786). It is concluded that Nartov’s collection of historical anecdotes is a literary work, which was created with extensive use of Shtelin’s “Genuine anecdotes about Peter the Great”. The study of Nartov’s manuscript also made it possible to establish that the author of the first translation of Shtelin’s work published in Russia (1785) was the famous translator and publisher P. I. Bogdanovich.

Abstract:
This paper reviews the impact that computer-supported cooperative work (CSCW) has had on groups meeting in the same time and place. As is typical with new fields of study, there are few rigorous studies evaluating the merits of CSCW. Nonetheless, researchers have repeatedly observed events that, while not statistically verified, are worth sharing. These observations can aid development and help establish a research agenda. Among the major findings are that groups appear to reach consensus more quickly, are able to handle larger amounts of information more accurately, and are generally satisfied with the results. There is need for caution, however, about the effect on group dynamics and the need to tradeoff individual ergonomics and group needs. The results to date are very encouraging. New developments and research currently underway will add significant value, enhancing group performance and viability. If these developments come to fruition, CSCW could radically change existing notions of work collaboration.

Abstract:
One way of examining fiction texts in literature is to analyze the structure of anecdotes from Vladimir Propp's morphological point of view. For fairy tales, Propp has defined functions that are applicable to a variety of other tales and stories. The book "Qatla al-Qur'an" by Abu Isḥāq al-Tha’labī is a collection of anecdotes, all of which have a common point and they are all about the stories of those who lost their lives after hearing a verse or verses from the divine book. Examining the narrative structure of these short stories reveals the hidden relationships between the anecdotes in their infrastructure and reveals the structure and form of the stories better. In this article, this attractive Tha’labī’s work has been analyzed from a morphological point of view by descriptive-analytical method. As a result, the introductory works and the climax of the story, which usually marks the end of it, are the most important design of Tha’labī for creating a single and uniform structure in the anecdotes of this book.

In 1982, a year after i was appointed director of the center for twentieth century studies at the university of wisconsin, milwaukee (I had just received tenure), I met with a program officer at the National Endowment for the Humanities in Washington, DC. “Aren't you a little young to be the director of a humanities center?” he asked. Notwithstanding the inappropriateness of the question, my point is that thirty years later I'm still in the same position, albeit at the Simpson Center for the Humanities at the University of Washington, Seattle. In a sense I haven't moved. I have consistently chosen to remain at this level in university administration, refusing the hierarchical ladder (chair, associate dean, dean, provost, president) in order to stay close to faculty and graduate student research, including my own, and relying on building networks across the campus and the country in order to have influence at my university and beyond. Two anecdotes—I think of them as short stories—illustrate why.

The current project is an autoethnographic narrative account of memorable moments that affected (and, one might argue, effected) elements of the author’s identity as an African American man. The project includes several autobiographical anecdotes that span over four decades and include interactions with educators, relatives, and strangers. The author reconsiders the ways in which others’ perceptions of him, often linked to race, have affected his lived experiences in school, at work, on a summer afternoon walk, and online. Taken together, the anecdotes illustrate ways in which the social construction of race affects the author’s perception of self and others.

Abstract:
We experience judgment in everyday life: the process and the outcome, making and receiving. In this piece, I turn to John Dewey’s notions on how judgments are situational, interpretive, (con)temporary, active, and relational. Contrary to everyday connotations of the word judgment, Dewey reminds us that judgment is more contingent than propositional. The aim of this piece is to re-consider our understanding of judgment in everyday educational work. Crafted from a range of sources, anecdotes are alternated with statements about judgment in the work of school principals and teachers, one to illustrate the other. The form chosen for this project echoes that of Ron Pelias’s 1994 piece on performance in everyday discourse.

AbstractAugmented reality (AR) technologies can enhance the user’s experience of visiting attractions, shops, and restaurants by using AR-based virtual elements and additional information about the places they are visiting. In this work, we transform the city landscape or iconic buildings into a unique experience by bringing iconic characters onto the buildings to increase users’ engagement. Our techniques transform buildings or parts of a building into a virtual character with which the user can interact. We designed two unique experiences: (a) ‘The Square’ in which the character will talk about the building’s history and other anecdotes about the area, and (b) ‘The Hunt’ in which the user is involved in a scavenger hunt where they have to identify buildings using the hints given by virtual characters. We have conducted a live user study to assess our prototype’s usability. Our preliminary experimental results demonstrated that our prototype has high usability and users using our system felt a pleasant and enjoyable experience.

Abstract The image of Beethoven that survives in the mind of posterity is a diffuse compilation of impressions emanating from the music and biographical fragments that consist to a great extent of legends and anecdotes. Indeed, the relationship between the works and the life appears all the closer if we place our faith in the revelatory power of anecdotes in which the truth is more symbolic than empirical, instead of relying on documentary testimony that stands up to historical criticism. There is very little documentary evidence for the celebrated scene in Teplitz, in which Beethoven assumes the role of the truculent republican, but any attempt to expunge it from the mind of the concert-going public would be wasted, for it is nothing less than the image that complements the musical gesture of the Fifth Symphony. It persists, in spite of the critical battering it has received, because it testifies to an aesthetic, if not historical, truth.

Abstract Fats Waller refused to repress his rollicking sense of humor just because he happened to be one of the best jazz pianists around New York. His appealing personality made it possible for him to shift his musical venue from barrooms and dance halls to recordings, theater dates, and Hollywood films. Had he been a better businessman, he could have been one of the highest paid entertainers and songwriters in the country. But he lived for the moment, and tried to fill every moment with good times. Waller was an easy man to work for. He hired good musicians and encouraged them to enjoy their work. Maurice Waller describes Fats’s method of encouragement: My father had a unique system to reward inventiveness in improvisation. Pop kept two bottles of gin on a table during the rehearsals. One bottle was for himself or anyone who happened to be visiting. The other bottle was the “encourager,” as he called it. When one of the band excelled in an improvisational section, Dad would stop the rehearsal, pour him a healthy shot of gin, and the two of them would toast each other. If you wanted to drink at rehearsal, you had to shine.

Abstract:
Abstract The recording industry developed at the same time that jazz was developing. The profits that could be made from exploiting the novelty of recorded sound caused the birth of many record companies, all eager to find marketable talent. Some early jazz artists turned down offers to record because they were afraid that recordings would make it easier for their competitors to copy their work, and some rightly suspected that musicians would eventually be competing for work with their own recordings. The value of records as a means to build a musical reputation was overlooked until the Original Dixieland Jazz Band’s recordings popularized that group almost overnight. H. O. Brunn describes some of the problems at the first date at Victor with the ODJB: The stamping of a foot would be heard very clearly, and at this time they had not yet discovered a method of “erasing” an unwanted sound from a record. For this reason LaRocca was not allowed to “stomp off” his band in the usual fashion. Instead, the musicians were instructed to watch the red signal light, count two after it came on, and then begin playing. It is indeed miraculous that they were able to start out together, and even more of a wonder that they immediately fell into the same tempo.[Musicians are not awed by these “miracles.” Ed.]

Abstract:
Resilience for children with special needs is often discussed in terms of the families concerned rather than the children themselves. This article reports on a current study that aims to analyse sections of daily routines for children with autism, and to find subsequent examples of resilience that the children show. Under a qualitative research framework, the data is derived from a case study supported by a literature review. The literature review was conducted first to find out existing information that might be useful by parents and teachers to understand resilience of tamariki with autism. Relevant journal articles available in the EBESCO database within the time frame of 2000–2021 were looked at. An integrative review process was applied to navigate answers aligned with the research question. For the case study, the data were anecdotal records, of a child diagnosed with severe autism at the age of three. Anecdotes were from three years after the diagnosis, experienced by the author. The daily routine was divided into regular activities during the periods of morning, afternoon and night, both at home and in an early-childhood setting. The literature review revealed that meal time, toileting, play and transition are the aspects of daily routine that have been studied. However, the findings of these studies were very limited in terms of usefulness to teachers and parents due to their quantitative nature. The case study highlights common trends of resilience in the aspects of a day for a child with autism, while acknowledging differences that prevail. Strands of Te Whāriki, the Aotearoa New Zealand early-childhood curriculum, were used as a framework to analyse data for scaffolding the thoughts and mahi (work) of the early-childhood kaiako (teachers). The study proposes an extended version to include other cases, using social media networks.

The article deals with the main traits of hero’s character in Plutarch’s primary work “Parallel Lives”. Firstly, based upon Aristotle’s idea of the soul the article highlights Themistocles’ characteristics and how they can develop later. Secondly, using the “Life of Themistocles” it explores the hero’s double-sided nature and Plutarch’s opinion on it. Thirdly, the author analyzes the importance of anecdotes and metaphors in the image of the hero, created by the Chaeronean philosopher. The article reveals Plutarch’s image of Themistocles through an analysis of the most important features of his character. It presents how Plutarch’s opinion about Themistocles changes throughout the narration and argues that the same qualities, that led him to success, eventually led him to rejection and exile. The author draws a conclusion that, from Plutarch’s point of view, an ambiguous, but outstanding person is able to be a real hero. The article concludes that it was Themistocles who laid one of the foundations for the creation of the Athenian Empire: he managed to carry out the initiative to create a military fleet and he also led the Greeks in defeating the Persians in the key battle of the war, Salamis. Emphasis is placed on the possibility of making a comparison between the hero and his city. The similarities appear both in their characteristics and their destinies. Themistocles leaves the historical arena precisely at the moment when it is necessary. Thus, we can discuss the way in which the image of the hero in Plutarch's “Parallel Lives” can be connected with the state that he represents.

Abstract:
Blasts and blunt impacts are clearly large-scale phenomena, yet traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs at a cellular or sub-cellular level. A number of hypotheses have been offered as the root causes of TBI including mechanical insults due to reverberations inside the skull following the primary blast wave, secondary and tertiary blast injury due to impact from projectiles and individuals thrown by the blast wave, vascular pressure resulting from a blast wave to the body extremities and electromagnetic radiation [1,2]. There is anecdotal information that supports, as well as contradicts, each of these hypotheses. In this work, a simulation-based framework is developed to help elucidate the mechanisms of traumatic brain injury.

Abstract:
Ever since the first humans accidently mixed grains with water to ferment dough, the bakery profession has embraced social, cultural and political disruptions to advance its understanding and practices. During the last five years, the Level 5 Bakery Programme at Toi Ohomai has employed project-based learning (PBL) pedagogies to create real-world learning environments and provide baking students with 21st-century skills. In March 2020, Covid-19 created significant disruptions to this learning environment, with the programme and its learners being forced to quickly pivot their traditional practices to ensure contemporary and pedagogically responsive learning continued. Here, I discuss anecdotal findings around PBL and the work-ready preparedness of bakery students in a post-Covid landscape, with broader implications for PBL environments and responsive pedagogy.

Abstract:
Collaboration is a learning strategy used in various domains such as e-health, e-business, e-education, e-government and e-research. In e-learning and under a constructivist approach, collaboration is expected to increase the performance of students. Although it can be used without digital media, given the pervasiveness of technology, their systematic application by educational institutions as instructional tools is nowadays common. In this work, we present our anecdotal experience to introduce collaborative learning at one of the main universities in Venezuela and analyze the results in terms of how students perceived what they learned, how they apprehended collaborative work and we describe a set of collaborative learning strategies with digital media and independent interaction tools that were chosen in this experience by students and teachers. These results will be used for improving the programs and courses in informatics aimed at preparing educators with a profile taking into account ICT’s.

Abstract:
Higher Education Institutions are increasingly aware of industry expectations regarding work-ready graduates. Work Integrated learning and co-operative education initiatives are widely acknowledged for improving professional skills and work readiness, however, graduates often lack the ‘soft’ skills (communication, collaboration, problem solving) deemed essential for enhanced productivity and innovation in the workplace, i.e. employability skills (Jackson, 2010). Anecdotal evidence from the Professional and Community Engagement (PACE) program at Macquarie University identified the difficulties that students experience in self-assessing employability skills. One research study highlighted the inflated self-perceptions and an overall lack of humility often associated with recent graduates (Papadopoulos 2010, cited in Jackson 2015). This paper discusses the theoretical and practical development of a competency development approach to learning for employment using an Assessment Centre process model currently embedded in the curriculum of one PACE unit. Developed and coordinated by post-graduate psychology students, the model provides a set of behavioural criteria by which to assess student employability skills. While there is little evidence in the literature of the use of AC's for enhancing undergraduate employability, (see Keele et al, 2010), preliminary research and evaluation findings from this project, suggest that the AC process can have a positive influence on the development of the ‘soft’ skills of employability

Abstract:
Film cooling of gas turbine engine components directly influences the efficiency and lifetime of the engine. Prediction of the film cooling surface effectiveness remains a problem area for engine designers. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) measurements of the surface film cooling effectiveness can be made using the analogy between temperature and passive scalar concentration in which the concentration of scalar marked cooling fluid is measured as it mixes with the main flow. The present work specifically addresses refinements to MR imaging techniques needed to accurately measure the concentration of a scalar contaminant at a flow-bounding surface. Anecdotal data are presented from experiments in which a single film jet exits into the boundary layer on one wall of a square channel. Data are presented for hole angles α = 30° and 60° and blowing ratios BR = 0.5 and 1.0. The Reynolds number of the main channel based on hydraulic diameter and bulk velocity is 400,000 and the jet Reynolds number at BR = 1.0 is 5300.

Abstract:
The Slovenian-Bosnian poet, writer, essayist, literary critic, translator and editor Josip Osti (1945–2021) was born in Sarajevo, lived and worked in Slovenia since 1990. Being a recognized poet in his homeland, writing in Croatian, one of the largest translators of Slovenian literature into Serbo-Croatian, since 1997 he has been writing in Slovenian. The transcultural aspects of Josip Osti’s literary works, both poetry collections and novels, are a unique phenomenon. In our study, we turned to the novels of Josip Osti, namely his trilogy — Ghosts of the House of Heinrich Böll (2016), In Front of the Mirror (2016) and Life is a Creepy Fairy Tale (2019). All three works have a strong (auto)biographical component and form a special novel form, which the author calls the “kaleidoscope-mosaic” novel. The latter has a fragmented structure and consists of short stories, life stories, anecdotes, urban legends, essayistic notes, literary-critical digressions, lyrical passages, diary entries, etc. In Osti’s novels, we also find a connection with the tradition of short prose in Bosnian-Herzegovina literature, in particular, with the works of the 1990s by such authors as M. Jergović, D. Karahasan, N. Veličković, K. Zaimović and others. Their texts are characterized by a destabilized genre form, a mosaic narrative, personal and documentary evidence, and a palimpsest narrative model. The kaleidoscopic structure of Osti’s prose texts helps him to reflect the transcultural view characteristic of his intimate and artistic world, to embrace the complex overlap of heterogeneous elements. The novels are written in Slovene, but they are mainly devoted to the space of Sarajevo, the unique multicultural atmosphere of this city, as well as the tragedy unfolding in it; thus, the writer complements the so-called “Sarajevo text”, but already in the field of Slovenian literature, artistically comprehending the interconnectedness of Bosnia and Slovenia. Abstract:
As crime has become a serious cause of concern in most of Latin America, the "nothing works" era in criminal justice has given way to a shift towards evidence-based crime prevention in North America and Europe. The program evaluations conducted so far have yielded growing knowledge about what works, what does not work and what is promising, especially regarding recidivism outcomes. However, policymaking in Latin America remains ignorant to the available evidence, and most crime prevention policies, practices and programs are still being based on tradition, opinions, ideology, trends and anecdotal evidence rather than scientifically validated studies. On the basis of a review of the current literature on evidence-based crime prevention and an extensive search, analysis and systematization of the most recent program evaluations in policing, courts and corrections, this paper summarizes a series of lessons for Latin America and proposes a research and policy agenda for the region.

Becker, Chris, Anny Francis, Calebe de Roure, and Brendan Wilson. Demand in the Repo Market: Indirect Perspectives from Open Market Operations from 2006 to 2020. Reserve Bank of Australia, May 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.47688/rdp2024-03.

Full text
Abstract:
In Australia repurchase (repo) obligations are traded bilaterally 'over-the-counter' between parties, rather than on an exchange. As a result, it is difficult to obtain quotes of executable prices, trading volumes, and related data that are representative of the market. Market conditions are therefore not easy to assess and often dependent on anecdotal evidence. Over the years, the Reserve Bank of Australia has published data and analysis of the repo market by providing indirect perspectives using data from its own open market operations that are conducted using repos. This paper contributes to this work. The Reserve Bank conducts open market operations to manage liquidity in the interbank market, provide settlement balances for the smooth functioning of the payments system, and for the implementation of monetary policy. Repos are an integral part of these operations. The eligible private sector counterparties in these auctions have a variety of reasons for participating. We arrange their bids in an ascending order in a number of distinct phases so that they can be used to make inferences about the demand for repo and hence market operations. Several insights allow us to better understand the dynamics underpinning the repo market. The findings mainly relate to the period prior to the implementation of unconventional monetary policies in March 2020.
