Abstract:
The Woodhouse family, friends of Sir Owen Woodhouse and the law faculties of the Victoria University of Wellington and the University of Auckland decided on the occasion of what would have been Sir Owen Woodhouse's 100th birthday that a fellowship and lectureship should be established in recognition of the great contributions he has made to law and policy in New Zealand and beyond. The fellows and lecturers are not to see themselves as limited to the law and are encouraged to address broader matters challenging people here and abroad. Sir Kenneth Keith gave the inaugural Sir Owen Woodhouse Memorial Lecture in Wellington on 29 August 2017 and in Auckland on 30 August 2017. The address considers in turn the dangers and perils at work, at sea and on the battlefield. It reflects on New Zealand's accident compensation scheme and suggests possible extensions to the scheme.

We show (using results of Wise and of Woodhouse) that a tubular group is always virtually special (meaning that it has a finite index subgroup embedding in a RAAG) if the underlying graph is a tree. We also adapt Gardam and Woodhouse’s argument on tubular groups which double cover 1-relator groups to show there exist 1-relator groups which are CAT(0) but not residually finite.

Abstract:
The radical principles behind the 1967 Woodhouse Report were eclipsed by shifting political styles—and gradually abandoned as heretical. We can now turn to Sir Owen's own notion, that "the apparent heresies of one generation become the orthodoxies of the next", to explore how core Woodhouse heresies might themselves perform this transition: providing fresh support for a generation grappling with headline challenges of climate change and pandemic control.

This article reflects on the original Woodhouse Report, the blueprint for New Zealand's current Accident Compensation Scheme. The author argues that the language that the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) uses should reflect the principles and substance of the Woodhouse Report rather than the insurance industry. She concludes that the Woodhouse Report should remain fundamental, and ultimately states that New Zealand are fortunate to have the fairness of the visionary scheme.

Abstract:
Soon after ACC was enacted the momentum for comprehensive no-fault reform shifted to Australia, where another Commission led by Sir Owen Woodhouse extended the New Zealand principles to address all forms of incapacity, including sickness, in an integrated scheme. The proposed Australian ACC model suggests the radical potential contained in the original Woodhouse vision, even though political events in Australia followed a different course from those in New Zealand. This paper explains the evolution of the Woodhouse principles in the context of Australian policy and politics, and offers reasons why the proposed scheme never came to enactment.

Abstract:
The Woodhouse Report provides an instructive model for effective advocacy, in that its proposals aimed to solve a clearly defined social problem: meeting the needs of accident victims in an equitable and comprehensive fashion. Moreover the Report presented its solution as a cost-effective way of meeting broader compensation needs, by making existing economic resources go further. This paper argues that the Woodhouse model achieved success largely because of its problem-based clarity and sensitivity to cost efficiency. It also places the Woodhouse treatment of personal injury litigation in a larger historical pattern of evolution in common law.

The vision laid down in the 1967 Royal Commission Report was radical in scope and quickly became controversial. Led by its Chairman, Sir Owen Woodhouse, the Commission presented a series of connected principles to support that vision, drawing from earlier critiques of the common law system in New Zealand and abroad. This paper explores the legal background in New Zealand prior to the Woodhouse Report and reviews prior movement toward reform, including submissions made by members of the Victoria University Law Faculty. It also describes opposition to the Report from members of the bar and other interest groups, but suggests reasons why the Woodhouse framework was nonetheless able to prevail.

Abstract:
In the 2022 Sir Owen Woodhouse Memorial Lecture, I considered what it means to make law in New Zealand. Using examples from Sir Owen Woodhouse's illustrious career as a judge and law reformer, I argued that there are important differences in judges' and law reformers' conceptions of "making law". The common law is best seen not as a collection of rules but as a custom as to how to go about recognising what the law is. As a result, it is better to think of what New Zealand judges do as making common law in New Zealand, rather than remaking a New Zealand common law outside pre-existing traditions. The lecture illustrates this point by analysing the Supreme Court's decision in Ellis v R (Continuance), which was decided between the lecture being given in Wellington and its being given in Auckland in October 2022.

Mayor, Edward R. "The sculpture collection of the Second Marquis of Rockingham at Wentworth Woodhouse." Thesis, Sheffield Hallam University, 1987. http://shura.shu.ac.uk/20031/.

Full text
Abstract:
Apart from his patronage of George Stubbs, the second Marquis of Rockingham has been recognised almost exclusively for his patronage of Joseph Nollekens in the 1770's. This thesis attempts to correct such a narrow view and demonstrates that the Marquis was engaged in widespread patronage of sculptors in Italy and in England long before he met Nollekens, and that he established a sculptural environment at Wentworth Woodhouse and at Grosvenor Square which echoed his knowledge of ancient history and his love of the sculpture of Giambologna. The documentation of his entire collection of sculpture as it stood at the time of the Marquis's death in 1782 is here set out for the first time. The present writer's rediscovery of major items long missing from the collection has facilitated a reconstruction of the original ensemble in Wentworth's Marble Saloon, and adds to the published accounts of Cavaceppi's work for English patrons. The thesis examines the relationship between Augustan taste and ancient sculpture, and how it affected Rockingham as he experienced sculptural activities in London, Florence and Rome. It examines the extent to which he was fired to outdo his rival, Thomas Strafford, in the number and quality of works commissioned. The degree to which Rockingham responded to and patronised the arts generally is assessed alongside a consideration of biased criticism of him as a man who loved nothing but horses. The chronological development of the collection is charted, and its reflection of the eighteenth century mania for sculptures of Antinous is discussed. Later additions to the collection after 1782 are also documented. The published views of nineteenth century and modem commentators are set out in order to reveal the piecemeal and unbalanced nature 'of their assessments and offer various reasons for such a critically incomplete picture. Finally, an assessment of the quality and significance of Rockingham's sculpture collection, both in its day and now, is offered together with a catalogue of works and appendices documenting the original sources.

Abstract:
Among the potential risks involved in the use of wood in housing construction in Brazil is the lack of firesafety. Although wood is a combustible material, the required level of safety can be achieved by the appropriate care taken throughout the different stages of production. In the design stage, among other factors, safety is achieved by the correct choice of materials, the spatial conception, and details of the construction that take into account the protection of the elements and components of a wooden building. This dissertation discusses construction details aimed at protection against fire hazards for wooden buildings, which have been adopted in Australia, Canada, Japan and Switzerland, as well as an overview of firesafety measures in wooden housing in Brazil

Full text
Abstract:
Woodhouse-Sakati syndrome (WSS) is a rare multisystemic, autosomal recessive disease. The underlying cause of WSS are mutations of C2orf37 gene, which result in a truncated protein. Little is known about the function of C2orf37 (DDB1-CUL4A-associated factor 17, DCAF17) apart from it being part of the DDB1-CUL4-ROC1 E3 ubiquitin ligase complex, specifically binding directly to DDB1 and serving as a substrate recruiter for E3. There are two major isoforms of DCAF17: beta (65 kDa, 520 amino acids) and alpha (27 kDa, 240 amino acids), which is a C-terminal part of beta. The intracellular localization of the WSS protein is thought to be primarily the nucleolus. A murine ortholog protein was found to be expressed in all tissues with a relatively higher expression in the brain, liver, and skin. The aim of this work was to investigate DCAF17 in HeLa cells in more detail, in particular the redistribution of both WSS isoforms on the subcellular and -nuclear level as well as their chemical features. For these experiments, I developed, through recombinant expression and affinity purification, a specific polyclonal antibody against a WSS-epitope 493-520. Furthermore, three other specific polyclonal antibodies were obtained through affinity purification with help of commercially produced high-affinity epitope peptides.By means of these antibodies, I determined- through immunofluorescence and subcellular protein fractionation- that, apart from the redistribution of the WSS protein within the non-soluble = chromatin-bound nuclear fraction, a significant amount of both WSS isoforms is present in the soluble nuclear fraction. Indeed, treatment of purified nuclear envelopes with an increasing concentration of NaCl as well as urea confirmed a non-covalent binding of the WSS protein to the nuclear envelope with the detachment ofbeta-WSS at a lower NaCl concentration than alpha-WSS. In regard to the chromatin-bound WSS protein, I performed hydrolysis of nuclear and nucleolar extract with DNase and RNase. The results indicate that the WSS protein is bound to DNA but not RNA, with alpha-WSS being possibly located more abundantly in the nucleolus, whereas beta-WSS within other subnuclear departments. Furthermore, in all the above-mentioned experiments, a presence of an 80-kDa protein, which specifically reacted with the polyclonal high-affinity antibodies and showed similar redistribution and chemical features as alpha- and beta-WSS, was observed. In order to investigate whether this protein is a posttranslationally modified WSS isoform, I performed deglycosylation and dephosphorylation of nuclear extract, which showed no disappearance or change in abundance of the 80-kDa band on Western blot. While other ways of poststranslational modification cannot be excluded as the cause of occurrence of the 80-kDa protein, an existence of a third, yet undescribed, major isoform is also conceivable. Summarizing, this work contributed to a deeper characterization of the WSS protein, which can help future investigators in developing new experimental ideas to better understand the pathology of WSS

"The Effects of Non-native and Native Anuran Tadpoles on Aquatic Ecosystem Processes." Master's thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.29744.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: Non-native consumers can significantly alter processes at the population, community, and ecosystem level, and they are a major concern in many aquatic systems. Although the community-level effects of non-native anuran tadpoles are well understood, their ecosystem-level effects have been less studied. Here, I tested the hypothesis that natural densities of non-native bullfrog tadpoles (Lithobates catesbeianus) and native Woodhouse's toad tadpoles (Anaxyrus woodhousii) have dissimilar effects on aquatic ecosystem processes because of differences in grazing and nutrient recycling (excretion and egestion). I measured bullfrog and Woodhouse's carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus nutrient recycling rates. Then, I determined the impact of tadpole grazing on periphyton biomass (chlorophyll a) during a 39-day mesocosm experiment. Using the same experiment, I also quantified the effect of tadpole grazing and nutrient excretion on periphyton net primary production (NPP). Lastly I measured how dissolved and particulate nutrient concentrations and respiration rates changed in the presence of the two tadpole species. Per unit biomass, I found that bullfrog and Woodhouse's tadpoles excreted nitrogen and phosphorus at similar rates, though Woodhouse's tadpoles egested more carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus. However, bullfrogs recycled nutrients at higher N:C and N:P ratios. Tadpole excretion did not cause a detectable change in dissolved nutrient concentrations. However, the percent phosphorus in mesocosm detritus was significantly higher in both tadpole treatments, compared to a tadpole-free control. Neither tadpole species decreased periphyton biomass through grazing, although bullfrog nutrient excretion increased areal NPP. This result was due to higher biomass, not higher biomass-specific productivity. Woodhouse's tadpoles significantly decreased respiration in the mesocosm detritus, while bullfrog tadpoles had no effect. This research highlights functional differences between species by showing non-native bullfrog tadpoles and native Woodhouse's tadpoles may have different effects on arid, aquatic ecosystems. Specifically, it indicates bullfrog introductions may alter primary productivity and particulate nutrient dynamics.

Abstract:
This chapter considers James Woodhouse’s ecosocialism in the context of eighteenth-century improvement through his verse autobiography The Life and Lucubrations of Crispinus Scriblerus. Focussing on his time as a land steward at Elizabeth Montagu’s country estate, it engages with Woodhouse’s views on agricultural improvement, as well as his criticism of Montagu’s exclusionary practices and unsustainable farming methods. Also discussed is Woodhouse’s awareness of Montagu’s coal-mining enterprise in the north of England, and how the profits were used to transform her estate into a Brownian landscape. Montagu’s novel twinning of aristocratic splendour with industrial enterprise is finally rejected as an upper-class back-to-nature fantasy, whose destructive impact on land and labour Woodhouse reinforced in the poem’s apocalyptic vision of capitalistic wealth extraction.

Abstract:
Along with reduced acuity, amblyopia is usually associated with a stereo-acuity deficit. Indeed, stereo testing has been recommended as an effective means of screening for amblyopia (Kani, 1978, Reinecke and Simons, 1974). The absence of stereo depth perception however does not preclude other forms of binocular interaction. Anderson, Mitchell and Timney (1980) have demonstrated interocular transfer of contrast threshold elevation in amblyopes. The contrast elevation is normal for spatial frequencies where contrast sensitivity was equal in the two eyes and was virtually absent at other frequencies (Selby and Woodhouse, 1981). Levi et. al. (1979) report interocular threshold elevations which are tuned for size and orientation in stereoblind amblyopic observers. Another example of binocular integration has been reported using flickering stimuli which lack spatial structure (Baitch and Srebro, 1990; Baitch and Levi, 1989). With different frequencies in each eye, temporal beat frequencies are perceived in observers with binocular function. However, these measures have limited utility in a clinical setting where the time for training and testing is restricted. Our goal in this project is to evaluate a cyclopean motion test of binocular integration for use in a clinical setting and assess its sensitivity to residual binocular function in amblyopes. Binocular integration is required for the perception of continuous motion with this cyclopean motion stimulus, neither eye's image alone contains a direction cue (Carney, et al, 1987; Shadlen and Carney, 1986). Horizontal disparity does not provide a cue either, therefore the subject does not necessarily need stereopsis to perceive the motion. The stimuli can be briefly presented and the task is simply to indicate perceived direction of motion, up or down. Moreover, the stimuli can be used to evaluate binocular integration at specific spatial frequencies and have the advantage that moderate horizontal misalignment of the eyes can be tolerated. The cyclopean motion stimulus might provide information concerning binocular integration for stimuli with spatial structure beyond that obtained with standard clinical tests of stereo-acuity.
