Marciniak-Kajzer, Anna. Archaeology on Medieval Knights’ Manor Houses in Poland. Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.18778/8088-002-3.

Full text
Abstract:
The relicts of medieval knights’ manor houses in Poland today are so called “grodziska stożkowate” (motte) - the anonymous hills having in themselves remnants of wooden buildings, exceptionally made of stone or brick and numerous tiny artifacts being the trace of the past household equipment. Unlike to the castles they are not so often visited but more often destroyed. The book presents the image of medieval knights’ manor houses, which we know due to archaeological excavations carried on for half a century. Description of buildings household equipment and movables used by the people of the past was completed by transfers from written sources which allows for better understanding the live of medieval knights’ family.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on Octave Chanute's growing interest in wood preservation. In 1880, the Department of Forestry statistics forecast that the nation's supply of white pine would be exhausted in eleven years and hardwood within twenty-five. Chanute was arguably the first American to show his concern for preserving natural resources; he demonstrated the commercial feasibility of preserving wood to slow deforestation. Gradually, railroaders recognized the need to make timber last as long as possible and they realized that increasing the life of ties decreased the cost of track repair. Chanute and his partner Joseph Card designed and erected the first large-scale American commercial wood preservation works for the Santa Fe in Las Vegas, New Mexico, in 1885; for the Union Pacific in Laramie, Wyoming, in July 1886; and for the Rock Island and other customers in Chicago in May 1886. These were the first and only works treating ties on a large scale until other American railroads followed more than a decade later.

Abstract:
This chapter uses the songs of Woody Guthrie to track a wider shift from regional song to national culture and, ultimately, pop idealism. It begins with Guthrie's own accounts of Oklahoma modernism—the whirlwind cycles of boom and bust that marked life in the Southwest during his early years. Guthrie's early experiences provided him with a typically modernist sense of cultural drift and discontinuity and attuned him to the growing rift between material reality and its public expression. These sensibilities informed Guthrie's most radical work with the Popular Front; his songwriting of this period, rather than a straightforward expression of folk ideology or class warfare, explores a new economy of sound for an increasingly migrant public. However, Guthrie later turned away from the fatalism of the socialist line to explore a certain “comic” mode, one that, in its own sonic rambling, upends the discursive categories of modern public life.

Rasic, Jeffrey T. Archaeological Evidence for Transport, Trade, and Exchange in the North American Arctic. Edited by Max Friesen and Owen Mason. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199766956.013.50.

Full text
Abstract:
A wide variety of materials, including lithics, manufactured goods, and food circulated within and between communities in the North American Arctic, including fish and sea-mammal oil, dried meat and fish, skins and furs, walrus ivory, and wood, as well as nephrite jade, soapstone, chert, obsidian, slate, graphite, pyrite, galena, jet, lignite coal, amber, quartz crystal, and hematite. This review considers only the inorganic materials. To establish provenance, Arctic researchers employ standard methods including trace-element characterization, geochemistry, petrography, stable isotope values, visual appearance, and geochronology. The geographic coverage extends across the North American Arctic from western Alaska to Labrador, considering each material’s precontact uses, geological source locations, and distribution patterns in time and space, concluding with the prospects and status of provenance studies.
